Little Free Library books stolen - again

Dear friends and neighbors,
We have been operating a Little Free Library at the corner of Sunnyside and Hamilton since June with great pleasure. Dear friends and neighbors,
We have been operating a Little Free Library at the corner of Sunnyside and Hamilton since June with great pleasure. It's been a wonderful way to meet neighbors, share books, and spread the love of reading. (You can see more about the organization at littlefreelibrary.org). However, three separate times in recent weeks the entire library has been emptied of books.
I'm asking for your help in two ways:
1. If you see someone taking ALL of the books, please say something, or note the license plate number or make of car. (Some neighbors saw a man last week pull up to the library, take all the books out, put them all in his car, and drive away).
2. We are now running out of our supply of books to keep refilling it. If you have books you would like to donate -- books in good condition that you actually think someone would really like to read, not books you need to get rid of -- please do! If the library is full, put them on our porch and we will keep them for when this happens again. Of special need is children's books for all ages, which seem to fly out of there.

Of course, we want to keep the library open and available for everyone who loves to read and share books. Thanks for your help.

  • LisaMV friendly Lincoln Square neighbor

Wow, that's really disappointing! I mean, the taking of all the books, not the really awesome free library! What a shame.

  • Catbus Philosopher, Third-Class

Maybe put up a small sign: "Taking ALL the books ruins the library for everyone else. Please leave books for others." It may not deter the thief, or it may.

Men in Yellow Vests Door-to-Door

Hi all,
Yesterday while walking past a condo building at the edge of my alley I noticed two men talking to a resident in the front, main door of the condo building. They were wearing bright yellow utility - type vests and holding clipboards with papers on them. I didn't hear what they were discussing and didn't think much of it. Until.....

Today at around 4:45pm, someone rang my buzzer. When I'm not expecting anyone, I never answer my buzzer. Anyone that knows me and wants to "drop in" unannounced has my phone number, so I never answer the buzzer if I'm not certain it's someone I know.

After I didn't answer, I started to hear through the apartment walls, my neighbor's buzzers ringing. So someone was clearly trying to gain access. Well, someone in my building let this person in and through the peep hole (goodness I sound like a psycho, but I'm a female living alone and I take this stuff seriously!)

Anyway, long story short, I could hear a muffled conversation between the man and one of my neighbors. And through the peep hole I could see that it looked to be one of the same men I saw yesterday wearing the yellow vests. He then, skipped my door, but went door-to-door knocking at all the neighbors. No one else answered and he left. He didn't go to any other doors in my building.

I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen this in the neighborhood recently and if it's legit, or if my instincts are correct and it's potentially individuals casing the neighborhood right before the long holiday weekend.

I live in the Montrose/Clark area. Just thought I would post and see if anyone knew more about who these guys are and if they are someone to be concerned about.

Thanks all!

  • Bill Near Rockwell L

If they don't have proper ID by all means call John Law.

  • Neighborly1~ Values community.

If they were really from ComEd they would not be defensive or just "run off." Definitely report this to 911 or 311. If they are there, you can call 911 and report suspicious person(s).

But you can report it anyway...call 311 to report suspicious people you have seen more than once around your bldg. Give a description of the guys, your address, and also mention your bldg mgr also saw them, and what she told you.

Can someone leave a note for neighbors not to buzz them in?

Wood Fence Recommendation

Hello Neighbors! Do you have a recommendation for a handyman, contractor or Fence company. We are in search of a solid product and a good customer experience. Thank you and enjoy the Holiday weekend.

  • We used "advanced fence and gate" this summer and were very happy with them. They installed a vinyl fence and a wood fence for us.

  • We used Fenceworks in Highland Park (http://www.theguyon41.com/) for a wood fence this spring. Workers were very careful, finished in one day, and price was good for an all-wood fence.

If you or anyone you know in the Lincoln Square area is interested, please contact us. She is the heart and soul of our family and we don't want to lose her. She has 20 yrs of experience with infants, toddlers, and young children. She is Spanish speaking and has taught our son to be completely bilingual. Her daily duties have included, diapering, food preparation, laundry, light cleaning, park visits, museum visits etc. We would love to work out a nanny share where she would be able to do school drop off and pick-up for our son. Please contact me at lahncare@gmail.com or with any further questions.

  • I hope you find another family to partner with as this sounds like a great business and personal relationship. Best of luck.

  • Gina M Lincoln Square Resident

Did you find someone for your nanny share? We have a 7 year old who will periodically need to be dropped off at school and picked up from school only when I'm out of town.

Looking for a babysitter

We're looking for someone to babysit on a fairly regular basis, mostly evenings. We live in Lincoln Square. Does anyone know someone looking for a babysitting job or have any advice on the best way to find/screen for one in the area. Our son is 3 years old.

  • We found a great sitter on Care.com I highly recommend using that site. There are other similar sites as well.

  • Gina M Lincoln Square Resident

We're looking for a sitter to drop our 7 year old off at school in the morning and watch him for an hour or two in the afternoon. Anyone have any ideas?

Heating & AC recommendation?

Hi neighbors,

I'm looking for recommendations for a heating and air company to come out and do an annual service check on my furnace. We had a bad experience with All-Temp earlier this year and I'm hoping to get a better recommendation.

Thanks!

  • DougB 47th Ward Curmudgeon

I agree with Annika, stay away from Four Seasons. Also Deljo heating and AC is not bad.

  • Kelly B Beaucastel's Mom

Metro Air Group is fantastic! Call and talk to Janine. 773-736-1400. All of the service people are very courteous and knowledgable. They even offer an annual contract for AC and Heat maintenance. Pay once and you are done! They are also great in an emergency. The motor in the furnace in our old condo quit on one of the coldest days of the year. Called at 6am and showed up within an hour!

Burglary on Leland Ave. next to Damen Brown Line Stop

In various neighborhoods I have lived in for 25+ years, I have had a back door panel kicked in, I've had people crawl through an open window, bust into my car, break into my garage, etc etc. Those were good and bad neighborhoods. It just happens. This guy lives in a very nice part of the city, and most likely this is not some predatory thief watching his every move for the perfect time to break in, it is a random event from some jerks who came in on the el to cause some trouble. If it was me I'd replace any busted locks, assess any other security risks and fix them, then move on with life.

The police told me that the L line is perfect for bringing a "bad element" into the neighborhood. "They" would walk up and down alleys, pilfering whatever could be pilfered. I'm not sure how my garage door was opened, I hear there might be a device that can match garage door openers signals. I hate the idea of locking gates, but I think it's for the best. I agree with Doug, patch up and do your best to get over it.

Recommendations for furniture refinisher?

Hi everyone, I have an antique dining room set from my grandparents that is in dire need of refinishing. Does anyone have a recommendation on a great shop anywhere in the Chicagoland area?
Thank you!
Annie

  • Back in my city club management days we used Weber Furniture regularly to repair our chairs. Now that was in the 1970's and 80's. In those days, they picked up, delivered and always did an excellent job. However, even in those days, they were not inexpensive.

  • WAS HAPPY W WILLIAMS RESTORATION IN WESTMONT THEY WILL PICK UP AND GIVE ESTIMATE, THINK THEY MAY HAVE MOVED TO DARIEN, THEY WERE AFFORDABLE, TOO. HAVE HAD MANY PIECES DONE, MY COUSIN, TOO, VERY SATISFIED. LMK IF YOU USE THEM AND IF SO OF YOUR SATISFACTION.

Lost Orange Cat

Chester is an 8-yr old shorthair neutered male tabby. He is mostly orange with white markings and underbelly. He’s about 13 pounds. He is also microchipped so a vet, animal shelter or police station can scan him to verify that he is mine.
Please call or text me at 847-977-2344.

Just saw a cat like this at Winchester and Ainsle, he wouldn't let me approach and went between houses. Just a heads up.

Credit where credit is due (City Graffiti Removal)

I just wanted to share this positive experience with the EB community. Yesterday morning I noticed that our building was tagged. I went to the Chicago Streets and San page, filled out a form that took a minute and presto; this morning they were out blasting the tag away. Pretty impressive City of Chicago!

  • Agreed. Submitted an online 311 request on Tuesday after business hours for graffiti removal for 3 garages on my block (incl. my own). Graffiti was removed yesterday - less than 24 hour turnaround!

  • I had the same experience. I saw what the lovely kids had done one night on my buliding and thought, no way,,, no way are they gonna be able to get that off.... And presto/chango, the blasters removed it with no trace of anything there. I really am so thankful for the blasters!

Prohibition in the 20's was a complete failure, it didn't stop anyone from finding and drinking, It wasn't the downfall of western society and the country decided it was a ridiculous idea and ended it. This is no different. Are you really suggesting that all people who smoke a little reaf, are gonna die or that they should be locked up for it? Legalization and regulation would seem to be a much more reasonable way to deal with a host of issues.

Any leather repair recommendations?

Hello.

I have a leather bag that I use for work every day, and the stitching on one of the handles came off. I am relatively new to the neighborhood, and don't know where a lot of things are. Do you have any recommendations for a leather shop around here that could fix the stitching? Thank you.

Before and after school care needed

We are in need of a child sitter for before and after school care for a 7 year old child. We would need someone to watch him before school and drop him off at school, then pick him up from school and watch him until one of us gets home. We're in north Lincoln square. This would only be necessary when I'm out of town for work. Please inquire if you're interested. Thank you.

Try Urban Sitter - they have a great app and you can find sitters by school location, interview them and read parent reviews. More affordable than sitter city IMO.

  • Gina M Lincoln Square Resident

Hastingsp... How do you search urban sitter by school association? It asked for our child's school but it doesn't seem like it is associating it with our search criteria.

Hello neighbors,

There is a bus stop right in front of my house. And having some issues with the people that wait for the bus. I recently dug out my front yard grass and redid the whole landscaping. I also had a short fence but up so that it forces people to not go my front lawn and step on my new grasses, bushes, flowers, etc. However a new issue has come up. When people wait for the bus they sit on the posts of my short fence. The bus stop has no bench or bus stop shelter. It is just a tiny metal pole with the CTA sign. For 12 years I have struggled with people going on my lawn to wait for the bus. Thought that once I put a 2 1/2 ft long fence people would stay away. I have contacted the CTA but I have not heard back from them. Contacted the aldermans office but simply said they cant do anything about that. Any ideas of what can be done?

  • Sus I have lived in Budlong for 12 years.

Hi Phillip, I believe in my post I did not suggest "putting spikes on a small fence on a cheap bench on your property" I dont even have a bench. and thanks for the concern/reminder that if someone gets hurt, one most likely will be held responsible. I am always conscious this is the U.S.A everyone gets a lawsuit here and there. Good times!

No sign at Wolcott stop - Lawrence 81 bus route

I've noticed since the repairs have been in progress at this stop right outside Sears (going westbound) that the sign for the 81 bus has disappeared. Anyone else notice this? And I also wonder if it has been reported to CTA or whoever is in charge of replacing the street sign.

  • Melanie F. Lincoln Square Resident

The sign is gone but the bus drivers still stop there. Knowing that they are doing major excavations of the road and sidewalks, as well as replacing the street lamps, I bet they had to temporarily remove the pole.

  • Shelly Lifelong suburbanite, now in South Lakeview.

I just checked the CTA alerts and there was nothing there...if the bus drivers suddenly stop stopping there, write the CTA and inquire...

Is orange and white cat found in Lincoln Square yours?

I apologize for linking to a Facebook post (wish I had a still photo I could share), but there is an urgent need to find the owner of a cat who is close to being euthanized at Animal Care and Control. He was found near Lawrence, Western, and Lincoln. Please take a look and see if you recognize him or know of someone who is missing a similar-looking cat. Thanks!

Flooding in Garden unit

Hi neighbors,

I recently moved to the area in a garden apartment. I've been experiencing consistent flooding when the rains get really sudden and strong like they have been typically this season. Wondering if any other garden units in the area are having the same experience or if there is a problem with our specific drain nearby...any thoughts or advice appreciated!

  • Budlong Woods neighbor Chicago girl for life

Unfortunately depending on where you live it could be a common thing. There have been various issues over the years because of the rain stoppers the city installed, the big dig project and river overflowing. As a general rule of thumb, I would never rent or buy a garden apartment in the city for that reason. Flooding is not covered by the insurance companies.

The City has restructured the sewers to keep rainwater on the ground in order to keep the system from backflowing raw sewage. This is coinciding with what appears to be an unexpected bit of local climate change, in the form of massive amounts of rain pouring down monsoon-style, instead of the slow and steady rain we've been used to here. And in a perfect-storm sort of way, at least in this area, this has also coincided with McMansion after McMansion paving over any and every bit of open ground available, so natural drainage is at an all-time minimum. (Have you noticed the massive street floods at every corner lately?) The water has to go somewhere.

Yeah, I wouldn't be renting any below-ground living space, and I'd get all your stuff in the basement up off the ground to keep it from getting water-damaged. Just in case.

I also saw on DNAinfo that Bartoli's will be featured on the Cooking channel's, "Bite This with Nadia G." tonight at 8:30.

  • To me, asking where you grew up (ie. in the past), I think it's fine to generalize. Or if she said "here", that means anywhere in Chicagoland to me. It threw me because the woman was almost rude about it. No need for that. You're right though...New Yorkers are pretty snooty about the B&T crowd.

  • I had a friend who used to tell everyone he was from the south side of Chicago, and by south side he meant Hammond, Indiana. C'mon.

Lost little brown terrier hanging out in my neighborhood - is this your dog?

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT AN ACTUAL PICTURE OF THE DOG BUT A PRETTY CLOSE MATCH. His ears and tail are a little longer.

Hi neighbors,

Sorry I have posted a couple of over times but no luck yet. There is a little tan/light brown male terrier (about 10 pds or so) who has been hanging out in the alley at 2600 W. Catalpa. He showed up there on Thursday night, is scared, extremely skittish and won't stay still long enough for me to get a picture of him to post. So far he looks to be in good shape but I'm worried he is going to get hit by a car or attacked by one of the many wild critters in the area.
He does have a collar, I am not sure about tags because he won't let anyone get close to him. I've been checking IL Lost Dog and craigslist, also asking around the neighborhood but nothing yet. He also won't come near anyone, with or without a dog. I've tried both approaches and I've also tried to lure him with treats like hot dogs.
I've been leaving out food and water for him and saw him this morning so at least I know he is getting the food. If you could spread the word or ask around, I would appreciate it. I only hope he wasn't abandoned. :(

  • Budlong Woods neighbor Chicago girl for life

I have an update - I finally managed to capture the pup with the help of my neighbors and I am now looking for the owner, I will be posting a picture with more info. Thanks everyone for the offers and advice. I also want to give a shout out to Treehouse for the laon of the trap. Unfortunately it didn't catch the dog but I did catch a lot of the neighborhood cats and a skunk!

  • You are a special person, BudlongWoods neighbor. And today is National Dog Day! So relieved to hear the little fellow is going to go home or find a home. On behalf of all lost creatures, Thank You and Bless You.

Looking to borrow a trap to catch stray do

Hi neighbors. The little brown terrier is still on the loose and I haven't had any luck finding any notices matching his description for lost dogs. Does anyone know of any rescues that will loan out traps for me to catch him? I don't want him to end up at ACC unless absolutely necessary and I want to get him off the street.

  • Anne M. S working mother

The dog we found this am has been reunited with it's very grateful owner. No collar and no chip ( we took him to an emergency vet clinic) made it harder than it should have been. Glad he is home.

No different dog but I finally managed to capture him so he is safe. I am now looking for the owner.

XIPPO (Bar @ Damen/Grace) - Noise Out of Control!

These Xippo patrons are out of control. I can hear them coming a block away, then they congregate....And get louder and louder. I've called the police but of course they're gone by the time/if they show. Plan on letting the alderman know about it.

  • Thanks for the heads up, Kevin. I never even noticed the sign changed back to Xippo until you posted (I live across the street from the bar). They 'appear' to have closed up shop for the past year with the exception of the occasional paint and wine party. It's been blessedly quiet ever since and it's been a joy. I hope this isn't a sign that their loud, obnoxious Eurotrash dance parties will resume and once again destroy our neighborhood's peace and quiet.

  • Wow I didn't know EB brought back the old posts too.
Still a few drunks passing through, but it's much better now that Xippo is gone.

Need someone with pickup/SUV/van to transport couple pieces of furniture

I'm moving some things from my current apartment in Lincoln Park to new place in Ravenswood. Have two people to do the heavy lifting--but they both have small cars and the dresser and bookcase won't fit in their vehicles. Someone want to make $50 to do the driving of the 2 pieces this Friday afternoon/evening? You don't have to lift at all. I'd really appreciate it if you'd share this note with any friends/college students/etc you may know. Thanks!

  • robin in WRP Tired and Cranky

It would be less expensive to rent a van. Costco consistently has the best prices on vehicle rentals

  • I may be able to help- I have an SUV. Email me and I'll let you know. Welcome to the neighborhood!

  • I've had great luck with taskrabbit for this kind of thing, great service for outsourcing remedial / handy tasks.
