While all of the above is going on the Montrose Green thing comes up, again. I do regret I did not go nutting before when the Alderman did not bring it up on the first time it was up zoned. Fact of the matter is he went against his own policy with no explaination to date.

So a community meeting is called and I flyer the area and there is a good turn out. The engaged voter.

It kind of seems as a SALES presentation by the owner developer. there were laughs and even tears, figure that out. But for many in attendance it is about their properties, their neighborhood and parking, a way of life. DNA info described as the Alderman as playing the role of Referee. And with all the back and forth, he states about a possibilty of permit parking in the area and refers to a hand out the Ward is providing stating the parking situation. Now right here I must stop. Permit parking by an El station is against his stated policy( Pawar 2012 Permit Parking report) . But the idea is put out there with a Ward conducted survey of the parking situation is given out. I read the survey, just know it is wrong and do my own count, count door bells on all buildings. While it does not take an urban planner to see this, most blocks in this Ward, not all, have larger buildings at each end of the block, book ends if you will, with smaller less dense building in between. The Ward just did not count these. My survey showed more dwelling units than the Wards survey, which meant just less parking than the Ward was trying to sell. When I forwarded my count to the Ward, the staff agreed my count differed, agreed it altered the count. The staffer even regonized how dense the area is north of Montrose. But to date, the Ward has not published a corrected survey, and the Alderman has not said if he will approve the more dense, less parking Montrose Green before the elction. So what is he trying to SELL...cont

  • jeff, Are you talking about Windy City Crossfit? Seriously?

So I take it your view is we were much better off as a community with this building sitting empty and getting tagged by gangs it had been doing for years before they showed up.

Or Montrose Green sitting around as an empty lot collecting graffiti.

See my point about "going backwards" above.

Speed Cameras on Foster

I am not sure if this topic has been covered before, but I have a question about all the speed cameras, especially on Foster. Is the city equipped with cameras that record your speed on the side in which the camera is located, or can the cameras record car speeds from across the street? I have researched this a bit and found that over in the UK there are speed cameras that can record from both sides of the highway/street. But I am not sure if it's the same for the city. Does anyone know for sure?

  • fran long time neighbor

Thank you Damian R, this has been my issue all along. If you are staying within the posted limit, then you really have nothing to worry about. And if you obey the traffic light, the red light camera should not bother you!

  • Some of them record both sides of the street. If there are no properties or buildings to disturb the recording, those cameras are able to record both ways in open spaces (Usually around parks and cemeteries.)

Lost rings at LSAC

I'm hoping against hope that someone sees this.
I accidentally left three rings on a treadmill at LSAC on Monday evening and the LSAC lost and found doesn't have them.

One is my wedding ring, one is my engagement ring and one is the last thing that my mother gave me before she died. To say that these rings are important to me is a gross, gross understatement.

I won't ask questions, I won't call the police but if you have these rings, please reach out to me at jlhowell74@gmail.com. I cannot express how devastated I am at the loss of these.

Thanks,

We tried Nava Segall for 2 years and she wasn't a good fit for us. She's fine until you don't take her word as the holy grail, then she treats you like a moron. My son was on an optional nasal spray (inhaled steroid) to help clear up a lingering ear infection, shortly after starting the medicine his teacher asked me what was going on because he was acting crazy and bouncing off the walls. I noticed it too, he just couldn't sit still and was being especially crazy. I called Dr. Segall and asked her if it was okay to stop the nasal spray because it seemed to be making my son super hyper (remember, the nasal spray was optional in the first place) and she told me "That's impossible". When I explained what was happening she was very condescending and basically held true to her word that the inhaled steroid could not possibly cause hyperactivity and then she suggested we bring him in for bloodwork for Restless Leg Syndrome. We went off the steroid and shortly afterward my son was back to normal. Clearly he had an adverse reaction to it, but in her mind it was absolutely impossible. We dropped her and went to another doctor who said, "yes, it is uncommon but that particular spray can sometimes cause hyperactivity in children".

I guess in her mind it was more likely that my 6 year old needed bloodwork done for restless leg syndrome than that an inhaled steroid was making him more hyper than usual and she had no qualms treating my concerns like I was an irrational lunatic and making very controlled condescending remarks like, "Well, if you believe that's what's happening even though it is impossible and you don't want your son to get better faster, then you can stop the spray". She might be just what some people want in a doctor, but for us she was not a good fit and I wouldn't recommend her. I also found it odd that you have to remove your shoes or wear booties for office visits, I'm all about keeping a clean environment but that seems a little overboard.

  • Butters I would hope that you remove your shoes at home it's totally reasonable to remove shoes or put booties on. Children are playing on the floor babies crawling etc
She's an amazing pediatrician period. I'm sorry you had terrible experience but I guess you can't please everyone.

Stop signs are not optional.

I know this is a recurring theme here on EB, but come on folks. I've watched numerous kids and parents walking to/from school nearly get hit by people coasting through intersections by Bell. It's only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or killed.

  • Debby in Lincoln Square 20 yr. resident

I agree cars are rolling through stop signs BUT I've also taught my children how to cross the street safely. There is a current theme of pedestrians and bike riders thinking they can do whatever they want and a lot of problems are occurring because of this. Mutual respect should solve this problem. Have a safe day EVERYONE :)

If the intersection has a stop sign come to a complete stop. If the intersection is marked no right on red, don't turn until the light changes. If the speed limit is posted 30, drive 30 (or less). You're arriving at your destination a couple minutes earlier is NOT worth putting yourself or others in harms way.

Would anyone have or know of a monthly parking space for under $140 per month between Grace(3800N)-Montrose(4400N) and the Lake to Graceland Cemetery? My nephew is starting his lease in the 800 block of Cuyler next week. Try the garage at Halsted Flats. It's just south of Grace on Halsted.

  • Try calling Scotland Yards, they have a lot at the corner of broadway and buena ave. you do have to call multiple times as they have weird hours and they take a bit to call back sometimes. There's also a parking garage at the apt building at the corner of buena and hazel, I believe they are called Buena Shores. Another place is the parking lot on Clarendon and south of buena ave, I believe they offer monthly parking as well.

I would encourage you to call around to as many shelters and rescues as you can before turning the kitty into CACC. Many people have felv + cats and are looking for companions for theirs. Sometimes shelters have this information and can put you in touch with a potential adopter. If you can keep your cat separate from the kitty you rescued that is ideal. Perhaps the rescued kitty could stay in the bathroom. Transmission of felv is through close contact (biting, grooming...through saliva) so if you can keep the kitties separate for the time being that is best. I have 4 cats and have had an felv + rescue temporarily stay with me, kept separate, and all my cats remain healthy. Good luck and bless your heart for helping this sweet kitty.

When a middle-class Jewish boy from New York enrolled at a Swiss boarding school in 1971, the lessons in swordsmanship and elocution were hardly the strangest things he encountered. Unchaperoned boys were often sent with minimal supplies on expeditions into the frozen Alps for multiple days.

Younger boys, barefoot and without gloves, cleaned pubic hair and dirty gunk from the drains of the common showers (which dispensed cold water). And once the doors in the dormitories closed each night, supervision, minimal as it was, ceased.

Even faint rumors of the behavior in the anecdotes from Allen Kurzweil's new memoir, "Whipping Boy," would trigger lawsuits today. Kurzweil's roommates forced him to swallow painful quantities of hot sauce; they whipped him with a belt while playing "The Thirty-Nine Lashes" from "Jesus Christ Superstar;" they hurled his most treasured possession, an irreplaceable family heirloom from his deceased father, out the window of their fifth-story room. The worst of the bullies threatened to throw Kurzweil out the window as well.

"Boys will be boys" doesn't capture the gravity of their behavior; "boys will be sadistic little monsters whose victims suffer lifelong trauma" is more precise. Suffice it to say that boarding school made a lasting impression on Kurzweil. He was a middle-class Jewish kid from New York, but his peers were the sons and daughters of bankers, aristocrats and heirs to vast fortunes. He was soon nicknamed "Nosey" in sneering tribute to his Jewish roots.

Christmas Tree Disposal

Do you know the proper way to throw out a real Christmas tree? Can it be put in an alley next to the garbage/recycling cans?

My neighbor asked me this question and I'm curious what the answer is.

  • RT Here

It's a shame to see all these folks still dumping trees in the alley.

I live in the Dakota building and we had 5 trees thrown in the alley. They sat there for weeks. If you are gonna buy a tree be responsible and know how to dispose of it properly.

I found a lost cat on Monday evening at the intersection of Argyle and Wolcott. It is a male cat, black and white, aged 2-5 years old. He has since been neutered since being in my care, he still has claws and no microchip or collar. After taking him to Treehouse, we have discovered he is FeLV positive and I can no longer keep him in my home due to owning a cat already. I am looking for ANYONE at all who can help in any way. I have found a suitable overnight boarding situation but otherwise, he will be sent to animal care and control and his diagnosis will result in euthanizing. I am looking for anyone who may know the owner of this cat, has any resources to find a foster, or can aid in helping to get this guy a home. Please let me know if anyone can help this guy out at all!!!!! Thank you!!!

  • FIV and FeLV are two different things. Cats who are FIV+ can live with FIV- cats and, if they coexist peacefully (i.e., don't draw blood), will not infect them. FeLV is feline leukemia, and it is highly contagious. It can be spread by very casual contact. FeLV will destroy a cat's immune system much more quickly than FIV, and FIV+ cats can live long, healthy lives.

  • Feline Friends might be able to help or at least advise. You can google them and send an email to Toni or Lisa. They'll reply to you. Thank you for trying to help this kitty!

Shortly after being elected, Pawar clarified that he does not provide city services and went on to state that he is a “legislator”. (1) City Council meetings are very important for any legislator, but just as important are committee meetings, where legislation is crafted, debated, amended, discussed and presented to the public.

A recent study conducted by, Chicago Tonight, indicates that Pawar rarely attends committee meetings that he is assigned to, with an attendance rate of 20%. (2) Being a self proclaimed legislator, Pawar knows, or should know, how important attendance at these meetings really is. Instead, when questioned about his chronic absenteeism, Pawar said that he is busy providing constituent services (2), even though he previously described the belief that alderman provide services as a “myth” (1). Other aldermen provide constituent services, all the while, still attending committee meetings.

In May of this year, Pawar was quoted as saying: It’s still a 16 hour day. I’ll be up at 5:30 or 6am, go for a run, then have some breakfast and go to work at Northwestern. After work, I’ll meet with constituents, elected officials, community groups.” (see the below posted images of “Longshot Alderman not shying away from City’s problems” from Inside Booster, authored by Pat Butler dated May 9, 2012)

So, the alderman does not provide services because he is a legislator. When asked why he is not fulfilling his duties as a legislator, he is busy providing services and has put legislating on the back burner. Maybe the real reason for the degradation of services and the abhorrent attendance record is the fact that the alderman is too busy working at Northwestern.

Is anyone else receiving suspicious tickets from this camera? I've not gotten 3 tickets from this camera over the span of 3 months. Let me tell you, I never speed through there. I always double check my speedometer before crossing onto the block that the cemetary is on. On top of that, It's almost impossible to be doing 11 over the speed limit through there on the way home from work during rush hour.

The Cindy Shearin Group Real Estate Properties 15 Tax and Investment Planning Tips for 2015

Well, the year 2015 has just started and for the benefit of our readers we will like to share with them ‘Fifteen important tips for Tax and Investment Planning’. These tips will surely help every tax payer to save some portion of his income-tax and also proper planning for his investment. Here are these fifteen tips:

1. Cut down your tax payments

The first theme for the year 2015 should be to cut down all your tax payment and this is possible through two vistas. First is taking advantage of all exemptions and deduction and second is ensuring Income-tax file for every member in the family. If you are able to take care of these two vistas only then surely your year 2015 would be a wonderful year bringing lot of money for you as a result of tax planning and also making money grow for you by proper planning of investment based on the changes made by the Government relating to investment strategy in whole of year 2015.

2. Planning for elder family members

The next step in tax planning is to plan for a separate independent income-tax file of your Dada, Dadi, father and mother. This can be done through gift by you. Likewise, you can think of taking out Mediclaim Policy for your aged parents and this can help you to cut down your income-tax because you can enjoy additional deduction under section 80D amounting to Rs. 20000.

You’ll be right next to the Western Brown Line stop. That means a lot of extra people, cars and so on. You’ll also have to deal with Germanfest and other events in/near the square. My good friend lives on that block, and has had no problems aside from having to deal with bar and festival crowd noise. He's easygoing, and it doesn't bother him at all. He’s on the 2nd floor though.
It’s a higher risk area for break-ins, made a little more acute by being garden-level. But that’s nothing to be alarmed about if you make sure the apartment is secure. Make sure the doors are solid with locks that work. All of you windows need to be secure - if they’re bare glass without bars, there is no way I’d live there.

Lastly, because it's garden level, ask the landlord and/or neighbors in the building if there are any flooding issues. It's awful to get a great new garden level apartment and find out a few months in that all your things are going to get wet on a regular basis.

Overall, it’s an excellent neighborhood and is easily one of the safest in the city.

  • The area is generally safe. Yes a few not so great things have happen but it's wayyyy better than other neighborhoods. And I honestly think some areas are better than others. For phill after I attended Amundsen high school, I learned that the area your nephew lived in was not the best part of Lincoln square, due to gang activity. With that being said I wouldn't live past Lawrence or western. Welcome to the neighborhood!

Ravenswood Metra Station Opening?

Does anyone have any idea when the station is opening? I know it's about a year overdue, but I can't find any updated info with new dates.

  • Thanks everyone. One more reason to look forward to Spring!

Huh. I didn't even know they planned to build another station house on the other side. I figured they were just building a station for reverse commuters.

What's Happening with the La Bocca Della Verita Space?

La Bocca Della Verita closed almost 2 years ago now and I was wondering what's happening with the space? I know the landlord wouldn't renew their lease so I assumed there would be something done with the space. Such a prime location shouldn't be empty!

  • Patty Lincoln Square neighbor

It actually closed in January 2014, and then the neighboring bookstore moved out in April. I've also heard rumblings about a Davis expansion.
