Does your Condo association require Criminal Background Checks for renters?

Our Condo association is 10 years old and we haven't been following our rules and regulations as closely as we would like. We now want to start enforcing some of the more important rules.
Our current Rules & Regulations require that renters must be subjected to a criminal background check. I am inclined to enforce the rule but would like to see how other associations are handling this. If your building does have a criminal background check, can you please provide information about general cost and process you use?

Thanks

FYI-Our building has 25 units total.

@Jeff, yes that is the main point of the article. Key to having such a rule (credit or criminal background on prospective tenant) is for the unit owner/landlord's benefit not the Association. But the unit owner/landlord can still lease to whomever he wants, including a criminal or person with a lower credit score. If the Association tries to reject that tenant, the unit owner can sue the Board and Association. Of course, one hopes a unit owner rents to a responsbile, credit worthy tenant since the unit owner has to continue paying assessments, property taxes and mortgage on the unit.

Well then that's not an accurate assumption of me because it was actually the opposite. I saw a different posting from someone moving stating they were selling some stuff with links to craigslist. I didn't see any personal attacks on that person's post. In fact, all the comments were inquiring about the items.

  • Frankly, I just scroll past postings I'm not interested in.

guy with mask at health club

I keep seeing this guy wearing some sort of gas mask while working out at the new(er) LA Fitness near Ravenswood Station. Anyone know what gives? I'd ask him myself, but I'm afraid he'll get ticked off and hit me. He's kinda scarey looking to begin with.
It's really freaking me out.

  • If he is a firefighter it could be his SCBA mask. He could be working out with it to simulate the firefighting tasks one has to complete while on air and wearing at SCBA mask. I have done similar workouts at the firehouse (I wouldn't do it in public because of the reactions you might receive).

  • Some MMA fighters train with those. Why I don't know.

Free Paper Shredding Events

I'm always looking for free shedding events because I'm gradually clearing out papers and files. If you hear of any, can you post them on this thread? We can keep this thread up on an ongoing basis to let people know as they come up.
I am looking for events on the North Side of Chicago and maybe Evanston, Skokie, etc.

Thanks!

The notice seems fishy seeins as I don't see some mass exodus of folks moving their mailboxes off their houses. My gut is that she doesn't like our dog barking at her when she comes up the stairs. Now before everyone gets on that, the dog is enclosed in the house and has NO way of getting out, she's just barking in the window which is closed when we're away. The claim of "multiple stairs" is insane, since we have a 10 stair staricase like every other single family home in the neighboorhood. Any idea what to do about this or debunk this "policy?" I attached a photo of the notice.

Washtanaw and Lawrence ave

Does anyone know what, if anything, can be done about the crosswalk signs that had been placed, but are gone now, at the crosswalks at the intersection of Washtanaw and Lawrence ave? The spring signs have been run over so many times, they fell off and had been thrown away. Peoe drive so crazy up and down there and I've already seen one person crossing get hit by a car!

I often have to cross Foster at Hoyne to get to Winnemac park, and I can tell you its rare for someone to stop while crossing at the crosswalk. I find the signs do help but I would never just walk across and assume someone is going to stop for you. Even if the pedestrian is within the law to cross it doesn't do you much good when you're in the hospital with a broken pelvis or worse. Also, the police have done "stings" at various intersections and have to warn or ticket most drivers.

  • Joshua Your friendly neighborhood cynic...

I gotta be honest, no matter how I came across before I usually stop when I come across one of these signs with someone standing next to it observing traffic and waiting to cross. However, when I come across a pedestrian who blindly plows into moving traffic with a defiant smirk on their face...I'm apt to hit the gas. Arrogance and stupidity aren't to be rewarded.

Car Always Parked Illegally Under Western Brown Line

There is a dark blue Chevy Volt with the license plate "BOXRBOY" that constantly illegally parks under the Western El tracks. There is even a "NO AUTOS" sign that the guy parks directly under. I see this car very frequently in this spot. Usually it is in the morning, but I also just saw it there tonight at around 6:30pm on 3/8. I happened to be walking by and saw three men get out of the car and walk to Garcia's restaurant as I was on my way to Fleet Feet. I am wondering who this person is, and why they have never been ticketed or towed. This is obviously not an emergency issue but is there somewhere to call to report this?

  • SpamAlert Spamophobic

Man, I'm glad I wasn't around when the thread began. I would have committed a big faux pas. When CTA guy said, "The three guys you saw? One was my son and the other one was my life partner of 14 years. Why do[es] Don need to be stalking me and my WHIP." I thought the WHIP was a reference to his gay partner. Wow! That would have been awkward. But, you know, SpamAlert has a very limited skill set, so the confusion might be considered understandable.

  • painhertz butterknife ninja

Hmmmm....CTA employees have "parking perks" when they're off duty? Wonder what OIG will say about that? There is no "official" policy for this. If you really want to complain about this and now that the nice person has identified himself as a CTA employee just call the Office of Inspector General and complain @866.814.1113. His license # should be on record.

Hit & Run - looking for car

I was hit by a car this morning. A nice bystander took down the plates, but the drive took off before help arrived. CPD ran the plates but did not find anything, I want to find this driver. The accident was near Ravenswoood and Berteau. I am looking for a white Mazda CX7 with TEXAS plates (similar to CS8 S061, but apparently that's incorrect). Please let me know if you see this car in your neigborhood.

  • I'm glad she has insurance, but hit and run--I hope the driver sees the inside of a jail cell. Glad you're recovering.

  • Kristin, were you on foot or on a bike?

Dry cleaners

Howdy neighbors, recently moved into the neighborhood and, sorry to be cliche but, does anyone know a good dry cleaner? I didn't want to bother on EB, but we've read a bunch of mixed reviews online on different places, and we've tried two already which didn't perform well, i.e. one overpriced and one lost a shirt. Again, I apologize as I'm sure this is a thread that goes around every few months...

  • I'm interested in whether anyone has experience with any green cleaners? We had a environmentally friendly place when we lived in Roscoe Village but haven't been able to fine one near here. Thanks!

  • In these parts dry cleaners are like taco shops; everywhere and neither great nor overly good

North Center Pedicure Recommendations

Hi Can anyone recommend a place for a good pedicure in North Center or nearby?

Thank you

  • Mary F 18-year resident of Lincoln Square

I second Sejour. The pedicures I've had there were meticulous and lasting. The atmosphere is lovely.

  • Salon Yves on Roscoe and Bell. 25 bucks.

Found dog near Sunnyside & Sacramento

The kind folks at Urban Pooch on Ravenswood have taken in a dog found near Sunnyside & Sacramento. Looks like a cattle dog mix, white with spots, dark ears. Check their fb page if you think you might know a dog like this. Let's get this pup back to his/her home!

Latitude changed hands

So, a coworker of mine mentioned to me that the Latitude bar/restaurant has recently changed ownership. I guess it's in the process of going through a rebranding and will be run entirely differently then in the past. My coworker knows the owners of the new establishment and has said that they have a much better food menu and will have a very good beer selection over time.

Has anyone been there in the past few weeks? I had only been there once before and service wasn't very good. I'd be excited to hear things are better with the new owners.

  • Great to know!! my friends and I haven't gone there in years because it just kept getting worse it seemed. Hopefully they will do some advertising or something, because I don't think the change is really known yet.

  • Great to know. We'll try it out.

Cars (and bikes) not stopping at stop signs in Ravenswood

I walk home from the Metra up to Foster Ave, usually on Wolcott. Seems like almost every day the cars in the area either do rolling stops, don't seem to stop at all, or take off when I'm halfway through the crosswalk. Also, bikes will blow through signs in this area as well, without even pausing - and the ones on sidewalks around blind corners have almost hit me on more than one occasion. Is there anything to be done?...

Also, bikes will blow through signs in this area as well, without even pausing - and the ones on sidewalks around blind corners have almost hit me on more than one occasion. Is there anything to be done? It doesn't seem like there is any police presence in the area, so it goes unnoticed. I don't like having to worry when I'm following the laws and being a safe pedestrian, that I'll be hit by a car or bike.

  • The new pedestrian "refuge" islands on Lawrence, complete with clear signage, are mainly ignored as well. Another great sting location if they want to hit a main road...

  • BerkeleyGirl Winnemac Park

Brian, if only there were a camera filming the northern crosswalk across Dearborn at Randolph, between McD's and Petterino's. It's insane!!! Honestly, in all my years, I've never seen anything like it. People of all ages/races/genders walking against red lights like they're not even there. Considering that I strongly believe that there are far more reckless drivers than pedestrians, I want to yell at them: You're not helping!!!

This thread is making me very frustrated that I can't make the CAPS meeting this Wednesday at Ravenswood Covenant Church.

The Last Pit Stop BBQ

Has anyone been yet? What were your experiences? Yelp seemed sort of mixed, would love to know if others have been there. I expected that they would have some bumps (everyone does when they first open), but that they should smooth out in time. I would love to see another restaurant in the neighborhood last!

  • My wife got the ribs which were fantastic and the coleslaw and sweet potato fries were great too. My brisket and mac and cheese much less so. We'd go back for the ribs though!

  • RoseRed 13 years in Chicago, 2 years in Lincoln Square

I went a couple of days after they opened and hope they will improve with time. The boyfriend and I got the pulled pork sandwiches. The pork was clumpy and extremely dry and the sauce tasted like it was out of a bottle. I had the baked beans and they absolutely came from a can. The boyfriend got the sweet potato fries and they were soggy.
The service was slow and confused.
We'll be giving it a few months and will try it again before completely giving up!

How's the new Mediterranean restaurant on Wolcott/Montrose?

Looks like it's grand opening was yesterday...no reviews yet.

  • So things that exist: sucuk trash kabob. Pity the poor advertising firm that has to make THAT sound appealing. :-)

  • Feihong EveryBlock developer, Lincoln Square dweller

Yeah, I feel like maybe they should spell it "sujuk" instead, which is closer to how the manager pronounced it (it's also how it's spelled on Wikipedia). If your eyesight isn't good, it looks almost looks like Jennifer ordered "suck trash kabob".

Loud boom at 3am?

did anyone else hear the very loud noise in the alley on the 1800 block of West Warner last night. Maybe an M80? only saw smoke.

  • We definitely heard it on Wolcott. Woke us both up. It sounded very close to our place whatever it was.

  • Stephen Boisvert Lakeview pedestrian

I heard it at Broadway and Barry.

  • I thought it was a tire blowout because I saw an idling SUV outside after the noise woke me up. Could have been unrelated though!
