Is orange and white cat found in Lincoln Square yours?

I apologize for linking to a Facebook post (wish I had a still photo I could share), but there is an urgent need to find the owner of a cat who is close to being euthanized at Animal Care and Control. He was found near Lawrence, Western, and Lincoln. Please take a look and see if you recognize him or know of someone who is missing a similar-looking cat. Thanks!

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=774876965889468

  • So the take home message here is never turn in animals to CACC? They will be killed almost certainly? I doubt most people are aware of that. Perhaps we should all go to our social media and post this information. Also suggest that animals be only taken to rescues where their policy is clearly communicated. Am I missing something here, if so please enlighten me?

  • RudyCG, I also would love to know more about the process. I was told once that no matter where you take a stray, the cat will end up at CACC. Which makes sense, if it is the one place where people can look for lost cats. So is the answer...

RudyCG, I also would love to know more about the process. I was told once that no matter where you take a stray, the cat will end up at CACC. Which makes sense, if it is the one place where people can look for lost cats. So is the answer to lie when you find a lost cat -- take it to a shelter and tell them it's your cat, that you can't take care of him/her anymore? I can completely understand CACC needing an approved rescue to take the cats no one has claimed. But there has to be a better way of getting them out of there. I am heartbroken over Otis and the other cats I see on the Cat Transfer Team's page. I cannot wait for the day I am able to foster.

Looking for Embroidery Shop for single item--quick turnaround

I previously posted about the need for a port a potty for a charity event. I'd like to get an apron embroidered with a simple name and design. Does anyone know of a business that's open on the weekends and might be able to do this by tomorrow midday?

Looking for Port O Potty on short notice

My husband is hosting a small, family style even this weekend, and the company he was working with, Johnny on the Spot, messed up the order and now has left him hanging. Anyone know of a place that's open late on a Friday that would be able to help us out short notice? I should mention that this is a charity social event.

  • Fast Freddy Grace and Leavitt

I just did rented one. I used Leprechaun. It will run you 100$ from any of the providers.
Not sure bout charity events they may have a different rate, but the drop off and pick up is what cists money.

  • fiatlux Writer

I definitely understand the planning and effort it takes to coordinate and deliver the Potties, but some prices are pretty exploitative, especially considering the cause and circumstance.

Hello neighbors,

There is a bus stop right in front of my house. And having some issues with the people that wait for the bus. I recently dug out my front yard grass and redid the whole landscaping. I also had a short fence but up so that it forces people to not go my front lawn and step on my new grasses, bushes, flowers, etc. However a new issue has come up. When people wait for the bus they sit on the posts of my short fence. The bus stop has no bench or bus stop shelter. It is just a tiny metal pole with the CTA sign. For 12 years I have struggled with people going on my lawn to wait for the bus. Thought that once I put a 2 1/2 ft long fence people would stay away. I have contacted the CTA but I have not heard back from them. Contacted the aldermans office but simply said they cant do anything about that. Any ideas of what can be done?

  • I've been told that it's the city which determines the location of bus stops, not the CTA.

  • The city determines the locations, I own a store and we had one in front which created a problem with parking for my customers. A lot of people that work for the city come into my business and I spoke to one that was a friend of the alderman. Honestly I think they moved the location of the bus stop across the street because I give money to the alderman. Good luck!

Air conditioning installation

Does anyone have an a/c contractor they've liked and found affordable?

  • iTemp heating & air. 773-704-0640. Ask for jimmy. Best prices I've come across and he knows what he's doing. Won't try to sell you what you don't need. I refer him to everyone and everyone is very happy :)

Any free-agent uphostlery folks out there? I need to install some new seat covers

in my car. I can do the work, but would prefer to have someone else do it. The catch is I would like the work done at my garage (at home). I.e. I don't want to drop it at a shop.

The work is pretty basic (c-rings, remove and replace leather). I have all the supplies and tools.

If you know of anyone with solid skills, post a reply. Thanks.

Small Condo Building Management Company Recommendations?

This group has steered me right before, so looking for more wisdom! Seeking a Condo/Property Management company that handles smaller buildings (6-12 units). Looking for strong knowledge of condo laws/governance, financial aspects/budgeting, solid vendors/bidding process, and most of all good communication with the owners & board. If you live in a condo building where there's a good management company, would appreciate the recommendation -- thanks for your help!

  • Claire in North Center 5 years in North Center

We were unhappy with Rosen. Currently with Westward. 30 unit bldg with three commercials

  • We have 31 units, and we are pleased with Westward. Depending on how big the building is one really wants to go with a management company because it is an incredible amount of work. My husband is the president of the board, and works very closely with the management company. He would have to quit his job if he were doing it on his own!

Friendly gray cat at Seeley/Irving Park Road - anyone missing her?

This sweet gray cat with a white belly and bright green eyes has been sitting on my porch for a couple hours now - very domesticated and cuddly! A neighbor said he had been taking care of her for a couple days - took her to a vet and found she's a middle-aged kitty, but she's not microchipped.

I sadly can't have cats in my apartment, but I'm keeping some water out for her and can keep an eye out, too! She may be owned by someone on the block and just out for a multi-day stroll, but if anyone in the Northcenter neighborhood recognizes her, let me know and I'll see if she's roaming around!

Alarm ringing for 3 days?

I'm on the 4800 block of Hoyne and there has been an alarm ringing for the past three days across the alley (going towards Hamilton)- not sure which house.

Would calling 311 be the best bet for getting this to stop?

  • You might call 911 since it's an alarm—something might be amiss if it's been going on so long.

Donating old engineering textbooks

I have a few boxes of early 1990's vintage electrical engineering textbooks that I've finally grudgingly admitted I will never, ever, use again. After spending $$$ on them back then, it would pain me greatly to just dump them in the recycling bin. I know there are websites like www.betterworldbooks.com that I could donate to, but I'd like to try to find a local library, school, or other neighborhood organization to donate them to instead. Does anyone know of any groups looking for this kind of textbook?

  • L

Open Books takes everything. They are a non-profit that sells used books to support their literacy programs. www.open-books.org

  • Open Books are good people that do good things. But I gently suggest you might be unrealistic. Twenty years of technological change is the equivalent of several generations in other fields. Plus the value of books has rapidly decreased as more information is accessible on line. The general rule of donating is "if it is junk to you, it is junk to them." We grow old, we have to let go. Maybe that's the pain of the dumpster.

  • L

Even if they are not current enough to be sold or given away, Open Books will still take them. They send them to be recycled and are paid for them by the recycling company. Don't throw them away yourself.

I agree that McPherson or Waters is better than Budlong for after school programs. There are programs with the Chicago Park District at River Park I believe you might be able to use. I have been trying for many years to get good after school programs at the neighborhood schools but in the end all that power rests with the LSC (Local School Council). I went to the LSC the first year my son went to the neighborhood school and asked them why no programs - even though I was told when I signed him up that there were plenty of programs. The programs did not start until October and were only 1 or two days a week. The LSC said they were not aware of the need since no parents were not asking for it. The meetings are during the day so hard to get working parents to take off to express this need. You should at least email your Alderman and say there is a NEED for the programs at Budlong. ward40@cityofchicago.org for Alderman O'Connor office. There is a company called Right At School that implements programs at some of the schools and parents seem to really like that company so maybe you can go to your LSC at Budlong and ask them to try to get a grant to implement that program.

  • Hastingsp North Center / St. Ben's

Try Urban Sitter - they have a great app and you can find sitters by school location, interview them and read parent reviews. More affordable than sitter city IMO.

The man came out from under the car and got into a black SUV on the passenger side and drove away.
My father could not provide a description of the man other than he was male, light complexion and was wearing dark clothing.
He described the SUV as a later model Explorer or Toyota Highlander with silver trim and bumpers, along with a spare on the back.
Keep an eye out.

Sherri, gangs generally rely more on crack cocaine than they do on Pot. Crack is highly addictive and very cheap, unlike pot. Besides, in places like Colorado where pot is now legal, illegal sales are still continuing since legal pot is taxed and much more expensive than from the streets. If Chicago made marijuana totally legal, it would benefit so much from the tax. One could hope it could provide for more police as well.

Sorry, that was off topic. But I don't know that the theft of the converters are gang related or not. Not all thefts are gang related.

What I am wondering is if certain types of cars are being targeted for catalytic converter theft, or is it any make of car?

  • George F in Ravenswood displaced New Yorker

Rachel is correct, The theft of catalytic converters are not exactly a revenue stream for Chicago street gangs. It's probably to labor intensive for the average jackass, but it doesn't mean that some of these thieves aren't gang members. Some of them are drug addicted, and this is easy money.

FOUND! Little Grey Girl Cat - found near Irving and Damen

This little cat has been hanging out in our neighborhood for a couple of days. We've asked around and no one seems to know who she is. We just took her to the vet and she has no chip. She's not a kitten, and has the teeth of an older cat. She's very gentle and friendly and in pretty good shape. So for now, she'll be on our comfy front porch chair, and we're of course feeding her. Can't bring her in as our boy cats are already upset by her presence. Does anyone recognize her? Found near N. Seeley and Irving Pk. Rd. A neighbor says he'll be putting up signs.

  • I know you probably know this, but try keeping her in the bathroom and the other cats can try playing with her under the door. Hope she finds a home!

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT AN ACTUAL PICTURE OF THE DOG BUT A PRETTY CLOSE MATCH. His ears and tail are a little longer.

Hi neighbors,

Sorry I have posted a couple of over times but no luck yet. There is a little tan/light brown male terrier (about 10 pds or so) who has been hanging out in the alley at 2600 W. Catalpa. He showed up there on Thursday night, is scared, extremely skittish and won't stay still long enough for me to get a picture of him to post. So far he looks to be in good shape but I'm worried he is going to get hit by a car or attacked by one of the many wild critters in the area.
He does have a collar, I am not sure about tags because he won't let anyone get close to him. I've been checking IL Lost Dog and craigslist, also asking around the neighborhood but nothing yet. He also won't come near anyone, with or without a dog. I've tried both approaches and I've also tried to lure him with treats like hot dogs.
I've been leaving out food and water for him and saw him this morning so at least I know he is getting the food. If you could spread the word or ask around, I would appreciate it. I only hope he wasn't abandoned. :(

  • I'm hopeful, Imtired, since it seems from the photo and description (also of his independence) that he may be a Cairn. Cairns are so capable that my imaginary one even has a pilot's license! :) My primary concern in addition to cars is that he may eat a poisoned rodent.

  • Hi neighbor,

Excellent, now the rooftop owners are suing the city. This costs all of us money. When

are they going to quit bellyaching and produce a product people will buy...without being parasitic? Look at the restaurants all around the field. Do they need to have line of sight? Seems like they view it as a right.
All I know is that it is wasteful to sue the city - and the taxpayers are left footing the bill.

  • MikeyJoe Rocket scientist

I'm still trying to figure out on what grounds the rooftop owners can sue. If the Ricketts family accepts that 17% of $0 is zero when all the rooftops go bankrupt, then that's their prerogative. What's the penalty for violation of 6.6 by the Cubs and/or the City? It's not stipulated in the contract.

  • painhertz butterknife ninja

Arbitration. According to the contract all disputes will be solved via binding arbitration. The rooftops' threat to sue never existed. Most like it was easier to say than "we're going to bindingly arbitrate you".

If software, wipe and reinstall Windows and all of your software (this is what the repair people will do.) If still problematic then send back to original manufacturer for repair or to one of their certified repair centers.

The Chicago North Center Jobs Group is still on Facebook, currently at 65 members: https://www.facebook.com/groups/679871012048118/ I may remove "North Center" from its name, maybe replacing it with something representing the broader Ravenswood/Lincoln Avenue area.

Harassment at Damen and Lawrence.

Walking to the train going South on Damen on the East side if the street. Right after I passed through the crosswalk, a man at the bus stop yelled, "I HATE YOU!!!" Then he lunged at me and screamed, "I HATE YOUR UGLY QUEER A$S!!!"

I yelled that I'm calling the cops and he ran across Damen to get on the Lawrence bus going east.

Martial arts/Self defense

Hi,
Does anyone have any good, affordable recommendations for a place in the area to take martial art or self defense classes? Thank you!!

  • Bryan Duffy Apartment Locator & Problem Solver

Degerberg Academy of Mixed Martial Arts is great for beginners and all types. Gets you physically fit and mentally aware. More girls than guys in some of the classes, too. Classes 6 days a week at two locations to choose from. First class is free. After that its about $100-$120/month.

  • My son (6) has been taking classes at ATA in Ravenswood and I really like it there. It's not too "beefcakey" if you know what I mean, and they also keep running Groupons (There's one right now, look for Go2Karate) so you can try out a bunch of classes for next to nothing ($20 for 10 classes or $30 for 16 classes, uniform included).
