Lincoln Square area infant care - recommendation request

Hey guys,

Does anyone have a recommendation for a local day care that will take infants 3 months and up?

Thanks so much

  • McCormick Montessori out of Swedish Cov Hospital. Owner is great, turnover very low ( same teachers for both my kids who are 5 yrs apart) and she owns several others in area, so if full she might be able direct you to another of her centers. And she lives in the area RM.

  • KidsWorks is fantastic. Ladybug is still going through a lot of growing pains. After months of dealing with it we pulled out.

Chalanger For Alderman Pawar???!!???

I am SO disappointed & disgusted by the so called Lawrence Avenue Street Scape!! Why don't we call it the Lawrence Avenue TRAFFIC NIGHTMARE??!!? Is ANYONE running against Alderman Pawar?? ANYONE??!!??

  • The Crusty Pirate Old crotchety pirate captain (retired)

    @ Shawn:
"Anybody who thinks the streetscape was built so that the people living near it could realize 100% profits on their real estate doesn't understand real estate or urban planning."

Please elaborate. Since I do live in the vicinity and I do care about the subject I'd like to read your opinions on the subject in more detail - with rough projections on the effects to real estate hyper-locally.

Group Flashing Gang Signs on 09/27/2014

As I was driving north on Wolcott early this morning around 4AM, I notice a group of 3 to 5 young men standing in the west side alley just south of Warner. As I drove closer one of the men ran out into the street flashing a gang sign. My friend who drove past about a minute later said the men yelled something at him. I called 911 and reported it.

  • Thanks for all the info--what's Lucky's?

  • Luckys is a little grocery store on Lincoln next to the currency exchange. The kids hang out there after school.

What just flew overhead?

It looked like some sort of military plane or helicopter. Didn't get a good look at it. My whole house was rattling!

  • Thanks drofter! I hardly expected such an informed answer. I Googled photos . . . no wonder I was confused as to what type of craft it was . . . yes, cool!

Between Barry's visit and the Marathon coming up, you can bet there'll be heightened alert.

Car accident????

What the heck is going on near montrose and ashland! I am just trying to get home and everything is closed off... Even the ALLEYS are jammed with cars. Was there an accident or are they filming something??

  • Most importantly, I hope the officer recovers, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who was annoyed with all the glass, police tape and debris strewn about when I walked past late last night. Doesn't the CFD usually sweep up/hose down accident sites?

  • Yah, I thought it was kind of ridiculous they still had the sidewalks on Ashland still blocked off at 6 pm when the accident happened five hours previously. There was no reason for that and by that time NOTHING was going on...just some cops wandering around the flipped over SUV....

So dumb and then yes, when I trudged to the train at 5:30 am this morning there was tons of glass still all over the road. Ridiculous! Looks like CFD used their time wisely. Good thing they blocked off Ashland and Montrose for so long to get that whole mess cleaned up. Well done, CFD!

Did anyone happen to get the details on what happened at

Lincoln and Addison last night around 7:30? I saw ambulance, fire truck and police. Looked like they were removing a bicycle from the roadway and someone was on the ground. I really, really hope the person is okay.

Mitzi, Could you clarify where this happened on Addison? Between Rockwell and what street? Thanks

  • Western. It was in front of Lane during the homecoming game, but students were not involved.

Last minute move out cleaners?

I need a move out cleaner for tomorrow afternoon. Has anyone had any luck with last minute requests? Maid for Chicago had a slot, but it got filled before I could call back. Same with E&K cleaning, Spar-Kleen, and a few others.

What was that?

I just saw 2 or 3 military planes fly VERY low over my building that is near Lincoln and Foster? Scared the poop out of me since they were so low and I didn't hear them until they were right near my place. What was that? Is the President in town this weekend or was this something else? I thought that it may very well be a presidential escort. I can't recall them ever flying over my place in the past so I was wondering if it was something else.

  • BerkeleyGirl Winnemac Park

Could not have been the President... Last night, he was hosting a State dinner at the White House for the Prime Minister of India.

  • Gina M Lincoln Square Resident

Perhaps it was the military practicing? I hear that president Obama, Michelle, and Hillary are all supposed to be in and out of town over the next couple of weeks.

Laughing Bird Closed

Saw this article.. Laughing Bird has closed after five months. Apparently "an online message posted Sunday read: "After 5 wonderful months in Lincoln Square, the owners of Laughing Bird have received a generous offer on the business and location...and, have decided to take it!"

So weird. I wonder what will be opening there now.

  • A bold gamble that sadly didn't quite work.

  • Jill 38 years in Chicago, 19 in North Center

I thought it was odd that it was closed Sunday evening. I had eaten there once; food was good but overpriced, I thought.

Everyblock vs Nextdoor in Ravenswood

I have my favorite but would like to hear what peeps up in Ravenswood think.

If you could only use one, which would you choose? ...and why? Which do you find to be more informative, to have better features, community outreach, support etc? ...or is there another social neighborhood network you prefer to use? ie Facebook, Yahoo Groups, Foursquare

To help compare, i put together a chart:

Hello! I'm looking for someone to take over my gym membership at Lincoln Square Athletic Club. I have a monthly contract that expires on 7/31/2015, so 10 months left on the contract. The monthly rate is $79/month. (They offer a discount if you work at a non-proft). LSAC is an awesome gym but I can no longer afford it. The only way to get out of my contract is by moving far away or having someone else take over the membership.

With the membership you can take as many group classes as you'd like (yoga, pilates, spinning, TRX and more!) and of course work out on your own. There is even a pool! Their facilities are very clean, well taken care of and has friendly staff.

Here's their website: http://chicagoathleticclubs.com/locations/lincoln-square/

Ideally I'd like someone to take over the membership ASAP. Please send me an email and we can set up a time to meet at LSAC. Thanks!

  • In addition to shorter time commitment there would be NO enrollment fee which is $150. Great deal!

I feed him when he comes around, and he wants to come in, but doesn't want to stay. He's a little bit of a neighborhood nuisance because he mrowls on everyone's porches at night. If he's yours, or you'd like him, email me at kleckron@gmail.com. I can try to catch him again and return him to you, otherwise I'll catch him this weekend and take him to PAWS.

  • Well , nobody came forward to claim him. After a couple weeks of feeding him and providing a sleeping box on the porch, we delivered him to the Animal Welfare League shelter today. They accept strays and are a no-kill shelter, with no wait list. Hopefully they can help him find a forever home, and he'll not be out to fend for himself as the weather gets colder.

Brunch in Lincoln Square / Albany Park area?

We just moved to the area and are looking for a good place for brunch (without a long wait) in Lincoln Square / Albany Park area. Anyone have any suggestions?

  • Thanks everyone, great suggestions! I can't wait to try them out. We also went to brunch at Gather on Lincoln where we sat at the "Kitchen Counter." It was fun to sit at the counter and watch them make and plate all the meals.

Flat Rate Car Service to Midway

Hi. Does anyone have any recommendations on an affordable flat-rate car service to Midway from Lincoln Square? I can't convince my wife to take the EL and I'm worried a cab might be crazy as we're going to the airport during rush hour...

  • JW in Lincoln Square 35 year city resident

Uber is cheap if you use Uber X or Uber Taxi. Avoid the Black Car service. They are way more $$ than if you called a private car service and booked it. I use Chicago Private Car. Most of the cars are nice, though you're not always getting a brand new Lincoln. Still, you can specify a pick up time and they tend to drive better than cabbies.

  • You can use uberx to go to the airport but only uber black can pickup from the airport.

Peace and Quiet

I feel bad for those people who are caught up in the airport bedlam after the fire, but MAN, it's so nice not to have airplanes loudly flying overhead day and night. Ahhhh. Nice and quiet! What a huge difference.

  • nkot, I don't think they do. But at the last meeting there were so many people that showed up to protest the noise and to demand a new environmental impact report, they had to put the overflow into another room. So their next meeting will be at a bigger venue - Rosewood Banquets. Irena S is right though - we need to keep up the pressure on the elected officials, particularly the mayor who has been silent on this issue.

  • Thank you for the info, HofTroy! My understanding from the one Trib article (http://my.chicagotribune.com/#section/-1/article/p2p-80865206/) was that the mayor was a supporter of adding at least some noise monitors in order to assess the real situation. I don't think there have been any monitors east of #5 at 6314 W. Rosedale Avenue (approximately Nagle & Peterson: http://www.oharenoise.org/PDFs/noise_monitors/2014/5_ORD%20Permanent_noise_monitor_locations_with_flight_paths.pdf).

It's surprising to me, though, that even with the new monitors, there won't be any east of the 40th ward. Ever more people live under the flight paths (many in highrises) as you approach the lakefront and there's more pavement, which compounds noise.

And then there is the question of the lakefront as a natural environment. Last weekend I was at Montrose Point Migratory Bird Sanctuary (a significant Natural Areas Inventory site) and was just amazed at how loud the planes were passing over the sanctuary.

Lights Back in Winnemac Park

Arriving home this evening, just after midnight, I noticed that the walking path through Winnemac Park, between Damen and Leavitt, was very well lit. Is this a result of last week's mugging? If so, it seems something good came out of it. I don't recall the lights being on that late in quite some time. In fact, a couple of years ago, I walked home at midnight from Ravenswood Metra, post-Ravinia, and all the lights were out.

  • Neighbors, lets keep an eye out in this park. Report suspicious activity and anything that may seem strange. Let's send the bad guys a message that we're watching them. I grew up in this park and it has transformed into a beautiful space. Let's not let them take it over. Just be safe and take care.

We were on Wolcott Ave. The dog jumped and bit our dog on the face and wouldn't let go. The owner acted like this has happened more than once and our dog had a swollen mouth for a few days and now has scarring / scabbing. We were so upset that we tried to get away and didn't get the person's name/number. We had never seen them on our street/neighborhood before but if anyone seems them please be careful. The guy did say afterword that the dog was not friendly. We are not sure why he was even walking the dog in public. If you see them or know who they are we would love to get their information for our dog's sake.

Drug bust?

Across from core power on Lawrence? Hmm

  • Do tell.

  • My husband was pretty sure he saw a hooker get picked up by some guy on the corner by Subway earlier tonight. A woman asked him for 30 cents and then a minute later some guy pulled up and spoke with her for a minute before she got into his car and they drove away. I suppose there could be other explanations, but none of them are coming to mind.

  • There were about 5 or so cop vehicles outside one of the houses across from that little plaza with core power/Pizza Hut and whatever else. When I walked out of the European bistro next door 8+ cops were walking out of the house across the street, seemingly disappointed. Once all of the cops were out the person in the house closed the door and shut allllll of the lights off. Maybe they were looking for someone?

Phenominal Designer Showhourse right behind my apartment in No. Center/Ravenswood

Hi Neighbors, I live on the 4000 n. block of Paulina (12 yrs.) I don't post often but wanted to tell people there is a designer show-house right in our neighborhood -usually they are in the burbs. Totally worth seeing! You can get plenty of ideas for decorating; colors, textures, fabrics, decor placement and just going through the house is a beautiful experience. The designers are so very nice and informative. So glad I went. They are only open until the 30th. The proceeds go towards prevention of Child Abuse so a lot of love went into this. Wish the mayor would come to see this- after all he lives on the street.
