At a certain point in an individual's life, a person achieves a levelof competence and independence in social, financial or emotional terms. Most people settle down into a family life with the necessary employment connection and social network that allows for more growth in all aspects of one's lifestyle. There will always be limitations in a few or more of the roles we, as individuals are expected to take on. And there are those among us who may need caring attention in order for them to fully function in society.

Corliss group has taken great efforts in providing such services to these individuals with specialized needs. Hence, aside from providing training in day-centers in Warren, RI, it also has a Residential Program for those who wish to express their own independence. Corliss provides these individuals the support they need in the matter of "personal care, shopping, housekeeping, laundry, food preparation, socialization and money management." These individuals are "encouraged to live independently and maintain their own apartment" and to get involved in the community-at-large.

This is definitely a notch higher than those who require more supervision or care in accomplishing essential activities of daily living. These are people who not only have acquired the skills and the confidence to become income-earners but also have the abilities to express themselves in other fields such as the arts, music, sports and other meaningful activities.

The program provides three individuals the chance to share an apartment unit on a 24-hour basis, including all the support they need "to develop the skills needed to learn, live and work successfully in the community." And so, aside from the daily domestic chores and routines mentioned above, they are trained to incorporate themselves into their community as independent individuals through meaningful engagement.

Does anyone remember the bar on Damen called "Augenblick"?

If so, I am desperate to find the artist who created the poster for them. It would be a gift to my husband, as this was the location of our first date 18 years ago.

  • Great idea.

  • Ed in Northcenter, you are correct about ownership and about Ric Addy. I was a bartender at Augenblick. The large painting on the back wall was done by Shane Swank. He is a very prolific artist currently living in Wisconsin.

More irresponsible dog owners...

Today is the second day I've stepped in dog defecate, and it`s getting annoying fast. Yesterday on Damen and Berteau, today in front of my own home on Leland/Talman. I will be watching, and I'll bring it back to you if necessary. So sick of people who cage their dogs 20 hours a day and dont clean up after them the other four. Shameful. Insert appropriate profanity here. People and eb filters s-u-c-k.

  • Preach it! I'm right near you and we've found small piles in our lawn. Extremely frustrating, since I am a responsible owner that doesn't see what the difficulty is.

Eyebrow Threading

Are there any good eyebrow threading places around Lincoln Square/Ravenswood? I used to go to a great lady down in Lakeview, but I just can't get there as easily anymore and my eyebrows look a little scary!! Alternatively, someone who gives a quality wax would also work - basically I need these caterpillars off my face. :) Thanks.

  • I love Salon Rupa in Indian town on Devon. They do a great job threading and it's only $5.

  • Dipti up on Toughy is the best. Second runner up is Kauser's on Western and Addison.

Smelly Dog

Got my furniture and rugs deodorized and cleaned...Thank God! But does anyone know why my large male dog stinks so much? My large female (different breed) doesn't reek like this. Both eat the same food, go to the same vet, etc. Vet says she doesn't know why he smells so bad...(he's not sick.) But a friend told me that her large male dogs always seem to smell worse than the females. Also, I was just reading a funny memoir and the author was describing how bad her large male dog smells......The description of the type of odor was spot on with our smelly pooch. He gets groomed. Should I start sprinkling him with baking soda?

Found: chubby orange housecat

This cat was hanging out on the sidewalk in front of 4447 N Wolcott. It was very friendly, well fed and didn't seem like an outside cat. I couldn't take it in so he's still outside. It went into the gated alley next to the building so I'm hoping it knows how to stay safe. It was cold but seemed ok for now.

  • MandaLeigh Here I Is.

Oh, that sweet baby. :( I hope he finds his way back home.

  • I actually saw a SIGN on a light post for a LOST ORANGE CAT at the intersection of Leavitt & Ainslie or Leavitt & Argyle today while on a walk.... I wonder if it's him?

  • That's pretty far away, cats don't usually stray that far. I think he was close to home, he just didn't look like he belonged outside.

Flat Tires Bell/Addison

Heads Up: woke up to two flat tires on the passenger side. As I was walking down the block I spotted another car with the same problem. Unlikely that it's a coincidence.

  • It happened to our neighbor on Byron and Bell. Police reported 33 calls about flat tires this morning. I am sorry that happened. We definitely need more patrols.

  • Sunflower6876 Loving life in Lincoln Square!

Oh shoot. Better check my car too. I'm on the next block up. Thank you!

  • Same here - both passenger side tires. I was parked on Claremont just south of Byron.

Still working but the creeps got on the roof and tagged the bricks surrounding the skylight.... now everyone on the Brown Line "L" can see their handwork! I am at wits end!!!! Up to the roof on Monday to cover that with paint and apply the anti-graffiti covering....cross your fingers! If anyone sees these creeps please call the police, we think it is the same group of bad-boys that beat up the Baker at Beans and Bagels but we are not sure. Do not put yourself in harms way....but call the police! Thanks!!!

  • I find they tend to target buildings that run down and look neglected. I see that building in the photo is covered in poor patch jobs, with weeds all along the perimeter. Is that a boarded up door on the left? Is this your home or just a property you own?

  • You could paint it out yourself. The best way to combat graffiti is to remove it from display. I would not wait for the city.
How did you connect this tag to the assault on the pastry chef at Beans and Bagels?

  • This is your second post about that paint. I'm beginning to think you're shilling for them. **sniff, sniff** anyone else smell advertising?

My husband has seen her sprinkling what we hope is only red pepper. None of this has stopped the dogs from using the bathroom on this stretch of grass. All of us dog owners are getting fed up with her harassment and we are worried she is going to start putting poison on the grass. We don't know if we should call the police or what to do. Has anyone heard how the pastry chef from Beans n Bagels is doing now? I heard there would be a kickstarter campaign to help him while he's out of work because he was injured. But I never heard any more about that. Has anyone heard anything about how he is or about raising money to help him?

  • Their Facebook page had some updates a while ago- surgery went well. You might check for more details there.

Graffit and the cure?!?

I seem to have ended the graffiti that has plagued my building at Wilson and Wolcott .
( over 400 times this has happened!) I went to Sherwin Williams Paint Co. and ordered their anti-graffiti covering. If you are having a similar problem this might be the solution. It is quite pricey, About $105.00 per gallon. Your surface needs to be cleaned by the "Graffiti Buster" first before you apply the covering. My piece of mind was worth the cost. I will up-date you if I see this hasn't worked, but for now we are golden! YEAH!

  • The Crusty Pirate Old crotchety pirate captain (retired)

Another possible solution could be 'green walls'

http://goo.gl/ltX9DG <-- green walls google image search

The paint is intriguing though... i may use it in conjunction with 'green walls'.

  • The Crusty Pirate Old crotchety pirate captain (retired)

I'm inclined to think that any surface that doesn't present itself as a clean flat canvas would deter an aspiring 'artist'.

It would be an interesting hypothesis to test - using flat surfaces (control), corrugated surfaces, vegetated surface (green walls), open slatted surfaces, surface filled with holes, surfaces that are already randomly colored, highly textured surfaces, etc.... anything to 'break the canvas' and make it less palatable.

    - someone go try that ; )

Bike Accident on Ravenswood and Montrose

Yesterday around 8:30am, I saw the immediate aftermath of a bike accident at the Ravenswood and Montrose intersection (west side of the Metra tracks). Looked like a car collided with a biker while trying to head south on Ravenswood. I looked up once I heard someone scream and saw the biker on the ground and several pedestrians rushing to help. The biker appeared to be knocked unconscious. I called 911 and was told several others had already contacted them about the accident. I was on my way to work and didn't stick around to see the paramedics arrive. Anyone know if the biker is ok?

  • Stephanie, Mayfair Bike path rider, Northsider 44 years

As I've reflected on this thread throughout the week, this has been the take away. On any given day, as we navigate our urban environment, an environment most of us choose to live in, we have a responsibility to move from point to point with this concern of our fellow travelers in mind; that they are doing so as well, and wanting to get there safe and sound. How can we all contribute to that end? Getting there safe and sound together.

I see postings periodically for apartments that are for rent but I get my posts removed when I'm trying to promote my massage business? The website - Next Door allows for posts like that so I think every block should too!! So do people actually flag these posts? Additional Filters Needed - EB Moderator?

Instead of just Thanks and Unneighborly, can a ranking system by relevance be used? That way people can add off topic comments that can be filtered down to a Conversation filter, and maybe a Fact or Answer button with relevant details upvoted? This would be used for description of a lost dog, result of an accident/investigation, etc. There will always be abuse for the buttons, but think the greater good may slightly edge out.

Looking for a parking space near Damen and Ainslie

Does anybody have a parking space available for rent around the 4900 block of Damen?

I used to live around this area and checked with parking at the church. The rates are pretty reasonable, but they have stipulations on what times you can park there and what days. Also, you have to move your car out of the lot when it snows more than a few inches. I figured this made it not worth it to park there since the whole point of an assigned spot was to not deal with getting stuck on the street. The Damen/Ainsle/Lawrence area can be tough when it comes to parking, which is why I am happy that I moved to an area with much easier parking. Good luck!

Hi. I live in a coach house behind Addison, between Hamilton and Hoyne. Every night, there are extremely loud noises at any and all hours of the night. They are absolutely not animals. Once in a while, there is a boom that shakes the foundation of the house. After wearing ear plugs with my head next to a large floor fan on high, I was still woken up by tremors.
The neighbors all claim that they don't hear anything, but I don't see how that is a real possibility. One night, after the earth shook me awake, I walked outside at like 4am and started thrashing on the garage next to our house... loudly. I literally took the side of my fist and started pounding this old loose garage with bursts for about a minute. This was a warm night with people s windows open. Nobody stirred. I walked around afterwards for about another min. Nothing. Another night at like 3-4am, I walked out into the basement of the two flat we're attached to with tenants inside, slammed the door behind me, started rummaging through our storage, walked back outside, slamming the door behind me and slammed the fence under their bedroom windows repeatedly. I talked to them the next day and they said they heard nothing.

Now, I am not a light sleeper. I used to live above a bus stop on Ashland and Irving park. I slept like a baby over there. Either this neighborhood has gone rogue or the house is having night terrors.

I've been sleeping at a friends house recently so my blood pressure doesn't start boiling.

This is ruining my life. The police aren't going to do anything (talked to them already). Cameras are too expensive. I have a strong feeling it will be a complete waste of money.

My fiancé can confirm the noises.

Extras needed for video in LS/Ravenswood area 10/22 & 10/23

Hi all -

We are shooting a video around the neighborhood next week and are in need of some extras to fill in a few scenes.

There are a few "featured" roles where it requires a specific look and others where we may just need a few extra people to round out the scenes.

If you are around those days during the day, let me know and I can give details of where/when it would be.

There is some small compensation based on featured or background.

thanks

Bent street signs

Someone has too much time on their hands. Seriously. I've read that this form of, er, expression relates to gang activity. Which seems a little farfetched--but worrisome--for this particular area.

I filed a service request at the 311 City Services website. I'm wondering if this has happened elsewhere in the area. I've lived in Lincoln Square for just over a year now.

Hi,
Does anyone have any good, affordable recommendations for a place in the area to take martial art or self defense classes? Thank you!!

It's not too "beefcakey" if you know what I mean, and they also keep running Groupons (There's one right now, look for Go2Karate) so you can try out a bunch of classes for next to nothing ($20 for 10 classes or $30 for 16 classes, uniform included).
