Mangal bar and restaurant

Mangal has been closed for a few days now. Looked inside and their was mail all over the floor. Is this corner @ Montrose and Wolcott cursed or what?

  • never ate there because that's a stupid name for a restaurant.

I agree with Bill that the place just didn't seem to know what it wanted to be (something with a Turkish theme, and that's about it). Everything about it was pretty much mediocre at best. Still, it's surprising (at least to me) that they could barely even make it to six months. Something stable and along the "wine bar and a few small plates" vein might not be a bad idea. Need leaves in Ravenswood

Hi,
I'm looking to pickup leaves (from piles or in bags) that people are raking from their front yards and willing to give up. Using it for winter cover in a community garden.

So, have a front yard in and can help me out? Winnemac/Ainslie area from Clark to Damen would be amazing. Garden plots are at Hermitage and Ainslie.

Thanks for any help!

  • JS1

I will put three large bags in my alley this evening. Feel free to take them. Alley between Argyle/Ainsle and Rockwell/Talman

  • I have some and will have more. I'm in Uptown but can bring to garden plot if you want. Let me know!

  • I've got 3-4 black plastic bags in the west side of the alley behind Hermitage, between Lawrence and Ainsle. Next to the parking space by the red brick condo building.

Stereo Exchange Fraud Collaborators sought

For those not following the previous thread posted by another user, I am creating a new post. My husband is an attorney, and experienced a fraudulent transaction with the Stereo Exchange proprietor earlier this year. After reading several recent posts of several other community members having similar or worse experiences, he is looking for others to join him in filing fraud charges with the police. If you are interested in participating, please email him directly at shargadon@mpslaw.com.

  • Selima previously you indicated you are attorney?

  • typo...^an attorney

  • My husband does not have an account, so I allowed him to use my account since this impacted our household, and thereby our neighborhood as a whole. "Neighbor" in Distress

Guy rang our bell around 10 pm, introduced himself as our neighbor, and launched into a story, which boiled down to the fact that he couldn't get into his apartment on Oakley just north of Irving Park. Asked if there was a Home Depot nearby - then asked for a ride (didn't get one). Then asked for a ladder (didn't have one). Then asked if there were any police or firemen on the block (I told him there were, but...

Then asked if there were any police or firemen on the block (I told him there were, but didn't know their houses). Then, finally, asked for cab fare (also denied).

I guess there's a chance this guy was on the up-and-up and having a really bad night, but this rings all kinds of warning bells for me. Anyone else encounter him?

One time a guy somehow got through a locked door at the front of my apartment building and then was knocking on my door, saying he was a neighbor and that he was locked out of his apartment and that his girlfriend was in labor and he needed to get to the hospital. It didn't make any sense to me; he was locked out of his part of the building but he got into mine? I was in the shower at the time, and told him I couldn't help him, but I could call 911 after I dried off. I could hear the guy through the door as he left, pissed off and muttering "in the shower".

Another time I was with my brother and we were on the ramp from lower Wacker to 290 on Christmas morning and there was a car parked on the right shoulder under the overpass and two guys were approaching my car. I slowed down for a second because I thought they were going to walk in from of my car and I was trying to figure out what was going on. I quickly thought that it was a scam, and I sped up, totally blasting both of them with a huge spray of water as my car plowed through it. My brother and I started cracking up. My other brother told me later that he'd seen these guys before and they would park in that area and then claim to have a broken down car.

I was driving home from work about 4 months ago when a man sprinted up to my car at Ravenswood and School begging me to roll down my window. I cracked it 2 inches so he could talk and he gave me some schpiel about his daughter and how he couldn't pay for her prescription and she was so sock blah blah and he only needed $11. I decided to help him but all i had was a $20. He actually had a stack on cash in his hands (all $1's I presume) and said he would even give me change and he did. I still don't know if he was telling the truth but I felt good to help at the time. As the evening wore on I just felt like I had been taken though. It's hard to say when people are being truthful about needing help so I think I will revert to my cautious ways based on all the stories on here. Has anyone encountered the "huntchback" lady in the winter coat and shopping cart? I have seen her around for the 4 years I have lived in Roscoe. She seems harmless but does anyone know her deal?

Halloween block party in Ravenswood?

I saw a post from Cheesies Bar that their food truck was coming to a block party at Damen and Ainslie on Halloween. Anyone know the deal with the party? Sounds fun!

  • Yep, the 4800 block of N Seeley is having a block party on Halloween. The street will be closed from 3-9pm for the kids to trick or treat. We had the food truck last year and it was awesome. If you're in the neighborhood, feel free to stop on by.

Assigning risk scores to apps may slow down unwarranted access to personal information

October 28, 2014

What information is beaming from your mobile phone over various computer networks this very second without you being aware of it?

Experts say your contact lists, email messages, surfed webpages, browsing histories, usage patterns, online purchase records and even password protected accounts may all be sharing data with intrusive and sometimes malicious applications, and you may have given permission.

"Smartphones and tablets used by today's consumers include many kinds of sensitive information," says Ninghui Li, a professor of Computer Science at Purdue University in Indiana.

The apps downloaded to them can potentially track a user's locations, monitor his or her phone calls and even monitor the messages a user sends and receives--including authentication messages used by online banking and other sites, he says, explaining why unsecured digital data are such a big issue.

Li, along with Robert Proctor and Luo Si, also professors at Purdue, lead a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded project "User-Centric Risk Communication and Control on Mobile Devices," that investigates computer security. The work pays special attention to user control of security features in mobile systems.

Li, Proctor and Si believe they may have a simple solution for users, who unknowingly allow voluntary access to their personal data.

Does anyone remember the bar on Damen called "Augenblick"?

If so, I am desperate to find the artist who created the poster for them. It would be a gift to my husband, as this was the location of our first date 18 years ago.

Crime in the hood?

I have lived in the lakeview/northcenter area for 50 years.
I think the lakeview, north center, Lincoln square, and ravenswood
areas are the safest streets in the city.
one can walk without threat, children can play safely outdoors, and the
police presence is regular.
what a wonderful area to live.
Anyone living in these areas should enjoy it.
One more thing. Never move. you will regret it.

As far as serious crime, yes, there's very little. At least from what I read, your safest bet is too stay off your phone while walking down the street, especially if you're a woman. Nearly all the muggings/gun-related crime I hear about involves a woman who was walking down the street while talking on her phone.

Personally, I think people wouldn't be as concerned if there were a greater police presence in the neighborhood. Too many cops have been sent to truly crime-ridden neighborhoods, and the gangbangers know it.

Violent crime is so rare here, that it makes the news when it does occur, unlike Englewood.

CRAFTJAR in Ravenswood

Hello All,
I'd like to get some community feedback on a concept that I'm working on. I'd like to open a craft supply, kit and workshop boutique on the corner of Lawrence and Hermitage. It would also be a great place to shop really clever gifts and greeting cards. Take a peek at the (in progress) website at: www.craftjar-Chicago.com and let me know your thoughts? Is it a great idea? Waste of space?
Thanks!

  • I'd love this! Would shop there and/or take a class for sure! Same to what others have said about JoAnn's and Michael's -- for me, they're far away, offer bad service, have tacky stuff, and are not very helpful in getting novice crafters started. You seem to have the right mix to solve all of that.

  • Jamie Mama, Reader

This sounds lovely. I live nearby, and would love to buy my craft items and take a class or two locally.

Be on the look out for suspicious activity like that if you live around there. I report everything I see and this was the longest period of time I waited for police to pick up or respond.
Outrageous.

I was walking my dog, so that's why I was over there at that time.

EL Tipico Stinko

Has anyone else had terrible experiences here? Usually it's dining inside. Tonight, however, I tried ordering for delivery. The bill was not cheap. Took forever to order having to repeat several times. Then the order shows up with no tortillas. Staples for at least the Fajitas, if not the Carne Asada. The other order was cold and tasteless. I don't plan to eat here ever again. Bums me out a little because I love the vicinity and outdoor seating. I love frequenting local establishments too, but this was the last straw.

  • I went their once because it looks so nice in their outside seating area. The food, had no flavor and the salsa was warm? I really wanted to like the place, but I would not go back.

Sean is correct about Tolgano Inc appearing on the liquor licenses. If you go to https://data.cityofchicago.org/Community-Economic-Development/Business-Licenses/r5kz-chrr and search for "1834 W Montrose Ave", you can pull up both of the most recent "consumption on premises" licenses.

However, both liquor licenses list the name of the business as "Mangal", even though the first Tolgano liquor license was granted way back in 2010! I'm pretty sure that's got to be a typo.

Oops, forgot to mention that the two most recent "retail food establishment" licenses were also registered to Tolgano Inc.

I have a big, strong dog. He has fear aggression. He wears a muzzle outside and gets treats for being calm. We are working with a behaviorist. I am working very hard to train him out of his fears and bad habits.

Please, If you see us on the street, don't be fooled by how closely he pays attention to me (I've got the treats!) or how calm he seems. If I ask you not to approach with your dog or young child, please respect my words. It doesn't make a difference if your child loves dogs or if your dog is a sweet, docile snuggle bug.

Yes, he's muzzled up and can't hurt you, but you hurt him when you don't listen to me. He doesn't need anymore setbacks from well-meaning people. I understand you think he is sweet/handsome and you want to pet him. He doesn't. He thinks you're trying to hurt him - or me.

I'm not asking you to be afraid or cross the street if you see us. Passing us on the sidewalk is no longer an issue. If he gets riled up by your dog, I will cross the street. Don't worry. I want us all to be safe and enjoy a pleasant walk.

I expect that some people will flame this post and tell me to "put him down." I don't have to defend myself to you and I won't. I am not putting people in danger. I'm simply asking you not to try to introduce your dog to mine, or encourage your child to try to pet him.

  • We have dog that wears a yellow ribbon because she is terrified of strangers. Never approach a dog unless you have the owners permission.

  • MandaLeigh Here I Is.

I'll never understand why some people think it's perfectly ok to walk up to a stranger's dog (or allow their child to do so) and try to pet or interact with them. Seems like absolute common sense, but I guess not. Boundaries, people.

Housekeeper Cost?

How much is a fair amount to pay for a 2 story home (1,800 sq ft, 2 full, 1 half bath, 3 small bedrooms, all wood floors, no carpeting) I have all my own supplies but I'm paying $100 for 3 people who are here for less than an hour. My house is very minimalist -- no clutter at all so I just need straight up bathroom scrubbing, floor sweeping, mopping.) I see several posts recommending cleaners, but no specific fees.

  • Aron Long tlme Lincoln sq home owner

Jaci ,This is the occupation the women who clean houses choose .I pay $30 an hour to my cleaner which is more than many college grads earn . She don't consider the work she does as someone's "dirty work " she is well treated and for the most part choose her own hours .

  • smartypants LifeLongCityGirl

I agree. Thank you all. I am going to stick with my people but type up a specific list of what I need done. I just think they might be spending more time on things I don't care so much about (dusting every dish in my china cabinet) and not enough on the things I do care more about (kids fingerprints all over the walls :-) And @Aron, it is nice when someone feels well paid and doesn't resent their work. Good point.

David Nash of 'Stereo Exchange' is a crook!

I paid this crook $445.00 dollars and the receiver now has problems that didn't exist before. He ALSO put in a new on/off switch to bypass the original one without my consent, claiming the original was dead. This is not true. It worked perfectly fine until he began this 10 week nightmare with my unit, my money, and hiding from me.

And as he MOSTLY did during the 10 weeks of this, he won't return any of my phone calls on his latest debacle.

Unfortunately, I learned too late WHILE HE HELD ON TO MY PROPERTY and hid from public view he is a LONG-TIME crook, incompetent, OR BOTH.

Flat Tires Bell/Addison

Heads Up: woke up to two flat tires on the passenger side. As I was walking down the block I spotted another car with the same problem. Unlikely that it's a coincidence.

  • I think this is some sick trick from tire companies. I went to a local car repair place so I could have my first oil-check up, and they asked me if I wanted tires. I said no. They gave me a dirty look, and as I walked away they went...

They gave me a dirty look, and as I walked away they went into another room. I was worried about this, next week, tires slashed. Coincidence? I think not. I also think they don't need patrols. I don't want to see my favorite neighborhood turn into a cop hangout where EVERYONE is watched, i mean, don't you hate it when someone is watching over your shoulder when reading a book, or when someone won't stop asking questions when you're trying to watch a movie? I think this won't happen again, these punks wouldn't hit the same place twice. Although it does tick me off that my tires were slashed. Oh well.

  • I believe that this attack was not a conspiracy because there where also tags that said DW everywhere and eagles #2 I'm not sure what this means but it doesn't make any sense maybe everyone was angry with there neighbor or there is a slashing tire group that doesn't like tires for some reason

Laughing Bird Closed

Saw this article.. Laughing Bird has closed after five months. Apparently "an online message posted Sunday read: "After 5 wonderful months in Lincoln Square, the owners of Laughing Bird have received a generous offer on the business and location...and, have decided to take it!"

Electric Aggregation Program

I received a letter in the mail about some electric aggregation program for the city. It says a few things about how the program saves us money if eligible, and there's an automatic enrollment. Anyone know more about this, or if/when it's a good idea to opt out? I'll read the docs myself, but wanted some community feedback to counter-balance it :)

  • Just one more point. For me, since it's such a small amount (my regular ComEd bill is 30-45 a month) not opting out, IE staying in, and using the city group plan which also notes they will not be using coal power was my deciding factor. Since the money difference...

For me, since it's such a small amount (my regular ComEd bill is 30-45 a month) not opting out, IE staying in, and using the city group plan which also notes they will not be using coal power was my deciding factor. Since the money difference is so minute, and could possibly even be positive with the city option, the environmental factor became the deciding factor. One person might not make a difference, but if even half of the city goes to all non coal electric that's something, right?

  • I saw the clean energy part, and that may be the reason I just let it run its course. Thanks, all, for the insight. :)

Landlord not telling tenants about other tenants with mental illness

I live in a two flat, with my apartment being on the first floor and another tenant above me who rents the entire floor. For the first month of living here there were not any problems with the tenant above my apartment, but the in the past few months he has been making unnecessary noises at all hours of the day. I'm talking about from 5 am to 2 am nearly every day. It is absurd. He is constantly running around, or making loud thumps, and other odd noises that disrupt my work and sleep. I do not understand how some of these noises could be made without a pet, but my landlord has assured me that he does not have one, but he is a "collector". Sometimes it sounds like this person is hammering things, at midnight, or jumping up and down at 6 am. I confronted my landlord about it, and he said he would "talk to the guy and take care of it" - and from that point on the noise making has only gotten worse. One day I walked up the back porch stairs to see if it led to his apartment, and what I saw was quite disturbing - hoarding. Hoarding of trash, of papers, boxes, broken electronics, and this was just in the backroom. It would be impossible for someone to escape from a fire, or even a firefighter or policeman to enter in case of an emergency. Hoarding is a mental disorder, and the fact that this person does not sleep, or sleeps at very irregular hours, further confirms my suspicion of mental illness. Now I am 100% in support of helping people with mental illness, but am not sure about the legal situation regarding how the landlord described this person who directly affects my quality of life. Does anyone know if a landlord has to inform a tenant about their neighbors in the same building if they do have a disorder that could affect other tenants. As I am typing this, it sounds like the guy is dropping things right above me, and then moving around heavy objects, and slamming doors. Do I call the cops? Do i call a lawyer? Or am I screwed for the next 8 months?

Thanks,
Joe

  • Try introducing yourself to your neighbor and having a conversation with him.

  • Regardless of this individual's mental state. Hoarding to that degree is a fire, rodent, and toxic hazards and should be addressed immediately to the landlord if they won't address it. You can always contact your Alderman about filling a hazardous living conditions complaint against the landlord.

Tagging in North Center

Last night our garage, along with several others in the alley of the 3600 block between Campbell and Artesian were tagged.

Photo is attached.

This area is a popular hangout for High School kids on Friday / Saturday nights when there are games at the Lane Tech Stadium.

  • Jim K. 3 boys, lots of noise

Nan, it is a multi-building factory that went vacant over the summer. Begyle microbrewery is holding down the south end of the chain of buildings well, but empty from there up to Warner. Signage is up for leasing, hopefully some tenants in there soon.

Dog Bite

Hi neighbors, my husband was out on his morning run this morning and a large dog bite him. He noticed a woman with a small dog and a large dog on the sidewalk so he gave distance and ran on the parkway to avoid the woman and the dogs. The larger dog pulled away from his owner and bite through two layers of clothing and broke skin. He exchanged numbers and is on his way to the ER.

Any suggestions on the next steps?

  • DougB 47th Ward Curmudgeon

FWIW, my dog was attacked and both me and the other dog's owner were bitten repeatedly trying to separate the dogs. My dog then ran away, and although the owner was horrified and apologetic I tried to get his info but my brain was scrambled. Anyway the point of the story is, I was bitten and had no recourse to locate the dog or anything, which made me nervous about vaccinations. With medical treatment I did not get anything nasty however, if one data point makes you feel any better.

  • Call the police, please.
