Jim Crowe for all, if you want to vote, or have an opinion. SNARKY

When I went around the area by Montrose Green and spoke with residents, there just was not a whole lot of folks who knew anything about the zoning request. Some liked it, some did not care and some did not like it. The fact of the matter is no one expected such a large project to be proposed on such a small site. At the community meeting Alderman Pawar could not get an agreement, described by DNA Info, if I remember, as having to play "referee" with those in attendance. And now we sit, the neighborhood waiting for Alderman Pawar's ruling.

Shawn I remember you most from the Berteau Green or landscape thing some years back. If I recall things you said back then, before you became a condo owner, you lived like right there, Berteau and Wolcott. How could you live among the uninformed? The unengaged? The leglessness people of the fighting 47th? SNARKY

My mother taught me not to swear in public.... well it was ok if I was on the job. Opinions and elbows my friend Shawn. We all have them

  • Shawn Ritchie South Side transplant to North Center since 2007

"Jim Crowe [sic] for all"... jeeez, hyperbole much, Jeff?

I can't make sense of your commentary on the landscaping issue, yes I lived around there back then. Leglessness? The hell does that even mean? What are you talking about?

If you're insinuating that my mom did a worse job than yours because I swear in public, let's just say that my mom didn't teach me to be a little pollyanna baby who blushes at a curse word.

I found a lost cat on Monday evening at the intersection of Argyle and Wolcott. It is a male cat, black and white, aged 2-5 years old. He has since been neutered since being in my care, he still has claws and no microchip or collar. After taking him to Treehouse, we have discovered he is FeLV positive and I can no longer keep him in my home due to owning a cat already. I am looking for ANYONE at all who can help in any way. I have found a suitable overnight boarding situation but otherwise, he will be sent to animal care and control and his diagnosis will result in euthanizing. I am looking for anyone who may know the owner of this cat, has any resources to find a foster, or can aid in helping to get this guy a home. Please let me know if anyone can help this guy out at all!!!!! Thank you!!!

  • FIV and FeLV are two different things. Cats who are FIV+ can live with FIV- cats and, if they coexist peacefully (i.e., don't draw blood), will not infect them. FeLV is feline leukemia, and it is highly contagious. It can be spread by very casual contact. FeLV will destroy a cat's immune system much more quickly than FIV, and FIV+ cats can live long, healthy lives.

We tried Town and Country Pediatrics on Halsted and were never assigned a pediatrician for our son (we were there 2 years and only ever saw nurses for EVERYTHING). When we transferred we got copies of our son's medical records and they spelled his name wrong repeatedly throughout the records (despite my correcting them several times), and spelled it wrong in a way that made no sense at all. Part of that issue was probably because we never saw the same person twice. So, I gotta give that location a thumbs down. A friend goes to the one up Lincoln though, and she's happy with them.

Stop signs are not optional.

I know this is a recurring theme here on EB, but come on folks. I've watched numerous kids and parents walking to/from school nearly get hit by people coasting through intersections by Bell. It's only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or killed.

Honestly, I am looking forward to the day when we are all using automatically driven vehicles. I think that will many of the problems (speeding, unnecessary honking, not stopping for pedestrians) should be eliminated. But then measures would need to be created to control unruly cyclists and pedestrians.

BTW, nobody deserves to get hit despite their poor habits.

  • Lynn Olejniczak Life-long Chicagoan, who loves her city.

I'm sorry, when ever I hear about automatically driven cars I can't help but think about the Robert Heinlein short story, "The Roads Must Roll." LOL

UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who has commented and emailed in an effort to find this guy's home. I took the cat to Treehouse today to run tests since I have a cat of my own in the house and it turns out he is FeLV positive. I can no longer keep him in my home and I need to find a suitable foster or place for him to go until I can hopefully find his owner, otherwise he will be surrendered to the pound and unfortunately, his diagnosis will cause him to be euthanized. If anyone knows of anyone missing a FeLV cat or anyone who can help, please let me know!!!!!!!! Thank you!!

  • BTW, if your cat is vaccinated for FeLV it will not contract the disease. You might wish to consider this before taking the stray to CCAC.

You can contact Jewell Animal Hospital, they might verify this and also provide you with info regarding special needs shelters for cats.

    Thanks for helping this kitty.

1142 W Irving Park Speed Camera

Is anyone else receiving suspicious tickets from this camera? I've not gotten 3 tickets from this camera over the span of 3 months. Let me tell you, I never speed through there. I always double check my speedometer before crossing onto the block that the cemetary is on. On top of that, It's almost impossible to be doing 11 over the speed limit through there on the way home from work during rush hour.

  • I believe in this location the camera is only on the north side

  • CJL ...

"the camera is only on the north side"

Yes, but the POV is such that it will get you if you are speeding eastbound, too.

Speed Cameras on Foster

I am not sure if this topic has been covered before, but I have a question about all the speed cameras, especially on Foster. Is the city equipped with cameras that record your speed on the side in which the camera is located, or can the cameras record car speeds from across the street? I have researched this a bit and found that over in the UK there are speed cameras that can record from both sides of the highway/street. But I am not sure if it's the same for the city. Does anyone know for sure?

  • they can get you from across the street! I recently got one going south on cicero from the (only) camera on the northbound side.

  • Thanks all! And yes, Jen A I was referring to the one by Kedzie.

Lost rings at LSAC

I'm hoping against hope that someone sees this.
I accidentally left three rings on a treadmill at LSAC on Monday evening and the LSAC lost and found doesn't have them.

One is my wedding ring, one is my engagement ring and one is the last thing that my mother gave me before she died. To say that these rings are important to me is a gross, gross understatement.

I won't ask questions, I won't call the police but if you have these rings, please reach out to me at jlhowell74@gmail.com. I cannot express how devastated I am at the loss of these.

Thanks,

Shortly after being elected, Pawar clarified that he does not provide city services and went on to state that he is a “legislator”. (1) City Council meetings are very important for any legislator, but just as important are committee meetings, where legislation is crafted, debated, amended, discussed and presented to the public.

A recent study conducted by, Chicago Tonight, indicates that Pawar rarely attends committee meetings that he is assigned to, with an attendance rate of 20%. (2) Being a self proclaimed legislator, Pawar knows, or should know, how important attendance at these meetings really is. Instead, when questioned about his chronic absenteeism, Pawar said that he is busy providing constituent services (2), even though he previously described the belief that alderman provide services as a “myth” (1). Other aldermen provide constituent services, all the while, still attending committee meetings.

In May of this year, Pawar was quoted as saying: It’s still a 16 hour day. I’ll be up at 5:30 or 6am, go for a run, then have some breakfast and go to work at Northwestern. After work, I’ll meet with constituents, elected officials, community groups.” (see the below posted images of “Longshot Alderman not shying away from City’s problems” from Inside Booster, authored by Pat Butler dated May 9, 2012)

So, the alderman does not provide services because he is a legislator. When asked why he is not fulfilling his duties as a legislator, he is busy providing services and has put legislating on the back burner. Maybe the real reason for the degradation of services and the abhorrent attendance record is the fact that the alderman is too busy working at Northwestern.

Christmas Tree Disposal

Do you know the proper way to throw out a real Christmas tree? Can it be put in an alley next to the garbage/recycling cans?

My neighbor asked me this question and I'm curious what the answer is.

  • This website offers tree pick up for recycling for $15. I was under the impression that your building is fined for trees left outside in the alley. Many in my building used this service. http://dtrt-recycling.org

It's a shame to see all these folks still dumping trees in the alley.

Well, the year 2015 has just started and for the benefit of our readers we will like to share with them ‘Fifteen important tips for Tax and Investment Planning’. These tips will surely help every tax payer to save some portion of his income-tax and also proper planning for his investment. Here are these fifteen tips:

1. Cut down your tax payments

The first theme for the year 2015 should be to cut down all your tax payment and this is possible through two vistas. First is taking advantage of all exemptions and deduction and second is ensuring Income-tax file for every member in the family. If you are able to take care of these two vistas only then surely your year 2015 would be a wonderful year bringing lot of money for you as a result of tax planning and also making money grow for you by proper planning of investment based on the changes made by the Government relating to investment strategy in whole of year 2015.

2. Planning for elder family members

The next step in tax planning is to plan for a separate independent income-tax file of your Dada, Dadi, father and mother. This can be done through gift by you. Likewise, you can think of taking out Mediclaim Policy for your aged parents and this can help you to cut down your income-tax because you can enjoy additional deduction under section 80D amounting to Rs. 20000.

When a middle-class Jewish boy from New York enrolled at a Swiss boarding school in 1971, the lessons in swordsmanship and elocution were hardly the strangest things he encountered. Unchaperoned boys were often sent with minimal supplies on expeditions into the frozen Alps for multiple days.

Younger boys, barefoot and without gloves, cleaned pubic hair and dirty gunk from the drains of the common showers (which dispensed cold water). And once the doors in the dormitories closed each night, supervision, minimal as it was, ceased.

Even faint rumors of the behavior in the anecdotes from Allen Kurzweil's new memoir, "Whipping Boy," would trigger lawsuits today. Kurzweil's roommates forced him to swallow painful quantities of hot sauce; they whipped him with a belt while playing "The Thirty-Nine Lashes" from "Jesus Christ Superstar;" they hurled his most treasured possession, an irreplaceable family heirloom from his deceased father, out the window of their fifth-story room. The worst of the bullies threatened to throw Kurzweil out the window as well.

"Boys will be boys" doesn't capture the gravity of their behavior; "boys will be sadistic little monsters whose victims suffer lifelong trauma" is more precise. Suffice it to say that boarding school made a lasting impression on Kurzweil. He was a middle-class Jewish kid from New York, but his peers were the sons and daughters of bankers, aristocrats and heirs to vast fortunes. He was soon nicknamed "Nosey" in sneering tribute to his Jewish roots.

I love this neighborhood, it’s my favorite in the city and I’ve been very happy here for many years. It’s very safe. However…
You’ll be right next to the Western Brown Line stop. That means a lot of extra people, cars and so on. You’ll also have to deal with Germanfest and other events in/near the square. My good friend lives on that block, and has had no problems aside from having to deal with bar and festival crowd noise. He's easygoing, and it doesn't bother him at all. He’s on the 2nd floor though.
It’s a higher risk area for break-ins, made a little more acute by being garden-level. But that’s nothing to be alarmed about if you make sure the apartment is secure. Make sure the doors are solid with locks that work. All of you windows need to be secure - if they’re bare glass without bars, there is no way I’d live there.

Lastly, because it's garden level, ask the landlord and/or neighbors in the building if there are any flooding issues. It's awful to get a great new garden level apartment and find out a few months in that all your things are going to get wet on a regular basis.

Overall, it’s an excellent neighborhood and is easily one of the safest in the city.

  • The area is generally safe. Yes a few not so great things have happen but it's wayyyy better than other neighborhoods. And I honestly think some areas are better than others. For phill after I attended Amundsen high school, I learned that the area your nephew lived in was not the best part of Lincoln square, due to gang activity. With that being said I wouldn't live past Lawrence or western. Welcome to the neighborhood!

Does your landlord offer recycling?

If not, please share that data with us at http://www.mybuildingdoesntrecycle.com/

As part of the Open Government Hack Night (opengovhacknight.org) we have created a site where tenants can anonymously report their buildings for lack of compliance.

The data will help us to visualize reports of recycling noncompliance and provide a hub for residents of multi-unit buildings and other Chicago residents to have a collective voice in favor of more comprehensive recycling services. Once there are a significant number of reports our group can begin to use these reports to show elected officials a rough estimate of how many multi-unit buildings are not providing recycling services.

The site is still in its infancy, so if you have any feedback or encounter problems with it, please let us know via the site's contact page.

Soba

Would anyone be able to recommend a restaurant that has great hot/cold soba noodles? I haven't been able to find many (any) places that offer anything other than yaki soba.

Thank you!!

Sunshine cafe IS AUTHENTIC Japanese food. Still owned by Japanese people. That is the only spot for you to get soba noodles!

Da Rae Jung. It's a Korean restaurant but it's known for its cold buckwheat noodles. Supposedly, Koreans like to eat that stuff in the winter.

ALERT: suspicious guy knocking on doors

A little bit ago, a man knocked on our door on the 4900 block of N Hoyne with a story that he'd been locked out of his apartment, left his keys & $$ inside, his girlfriend is at work until 7am...tall, caucasian, blonde, smelled strongly of cigarette smoke, gray sweatpants. We have reported it to police. Said his phone was out of juice but when we offered to charge it, it showed plenty of life. We didn't let him in...

We didn't let him in but called a locksmith for him...locksmith has just called us back to say he didn't meet them at the address he indicated he lived and isn't answering the phone, so now we're pretty suspicious. Not sure what his intentions are, but something just feels wrong about his story and wanted to give folks the heads up in case he's up to no good. If you get a similar knock on your door, please alert 911 and probably best not to let him in.

Lincoln Ave street lights between Montrose and Berteau not shutting off. They've be in this mode all month. Is this a 311 issue or does someone out there have a quicker way of addressing the problem?
