New to the Neighborhood

Hi! I'm going to be moving to the neighborhood, and I'm a little curious as to everyone's opinions. I do recognize that crime happens everywhere, but found myself a little more startled when I took a final look at my apartment today and found a group of shady folks down the street hanging out on a front porch. After reading through recent stories of muggings and other crimes, I am not sure if I'm just being paranoid or cautious. Any feedback will help. Thanks!

  • I've lived in my house for 15 yes. I love it here. I'm near division on Damen. Use your common sense about safety.

  • kat

My apartment got broken into last September, and my neighbor said the next door apartment got broken into within the previous 6 months. A friend of mine got mugged (well he was followed, noticed, turned and the agro had a gun so my friend surrendered his wallet, phone, ipod. He got his CC's and IDs back) this was daytime, he was listening to ipod, walking to Jewel-Osco. Not trying to scare you, but DO use common sense and be aware. Other than that, this is a nice neighborhood.

Lost dog sighting

Spotted a (lost?) dog tonight at Bell & Hirsch. Slim white pit bull with gray or light markings. No collar, but looked like it had been cared for. Dog was clearly scared and running back and forth through the street/traffic. I couldnt catch it. Not sure if there is a lost dog alert out for a similar guy, but I had to post anyway.

  • CW

You could try going on facebook and check Lost Dogs Illinois' page...they list many lost dogs and then post when they are found. If this dog isn't on there yet you could post about him/her. You're a great person for trying to catch this pup!

Gang Signs

Hi All--just noticed that about 1/2 of our alleyway has been tagged. What's the best way to deal with this? Thanks.

  • Ditto to everything that "Beat 1313" said, and may I add that Beat 1311 and 1312 ain't too shabby either. I'm serviced by 1311 now and was under the protection of 1312 when living in a different address. These folks do their job.....serve and protect....and do it well. Good for them (and us)!

Division Street reconstruction plans

You may like to read about the plans that CDOT has for Division Street between Cleveland Street (east of Larrabee) and the railroad viaduct by the McGrath Lexus dealer (west of Elston).

It will replace both bridges connecting Goose Island, and widen some sidewalks. It won't have accommodations for safe cycling, though. I'm not sure how this will be a complete street, in accordance with the city's policy.

Suggestions?

  • I just read about this the other day and thought it was a great idea. I am a small business owner in the area and would be interested in looking into organizing this for our area. Do you want to talk?

  • Great Timing!!! Tonite, Thursday March 22ND, there is a fundraiser for St. Balderick's (Cancer charity) at one the best neighborhood watering holes in Humboldt/Logan Square. For a mere $20 you get a bottemless pint of Three Floyds Ale at WeeGees Lounge, 3659 West Armitage (at Lawndale).

Traditionally, as part of the St.Balderick's fundraising efforts, people agree to shave their head for donations( similar to pledges for a walkathon). The owner, Alex, has shaved his head in past years, and may do it again!!!

Hope veryone can make it out there!

Bike stolen, 2000 Block of West Rice

From the "locked" garage of the 6 unit condo building I live in, the second bike in 7 months has been stolen. Black Cannondale M400. Kind thieves did not take my daughter;s bike - they even moved it aside. Bad on me - it was not locked, it is not engraved or registered. Lesson learned. BUT....Please neighbors, be sure your doors are locked, your garage door is all the way down before you pull away.

  • Very close to home. I'm always seeing people walking down the alley. I make a point of saying hello to everyone. The guys that worry me are the ones that stare at you and don't reply back. I always wonder what they are up to.

I'm on the 2500 block of Augusta, and it sounded like it was coming from the direction of the actual park. Does anyone know what's going on? Event space needed

I am looking for an event space in Wicker Park/ Bucktown / Uke Village/ West Town/ Humboldt Park to host a 3-4 hour private party on a Sunday afternoon in May for about 50-75 people. The space must allow outside catering and allow alcohol (so City of Chicago owned spaces are not an option). Ideally it would be less than $800 to rent the space for that time period. I may have some flexibility on the cost. Can anyone recommend a place that they have used or attended an event at?

The outside catering companies have the liquor and food service licenses. The liability for selling/serving liquor being covered by a professionally licensed catering company is the main concern for any venue located in the City of Chicago, regardless if they are a property owned/operated by the city. Many venues have preferred list, but several will just require you hire a licensed catering company. It is a liability matter, not a sales/profit thing. Some venues have preferred catering companies because they trust and have good/familiar working relationship with specific companies in order to provide a consistent quality of service to all clients. Others don't have a preference for which catering company is used, so long as they are licensed.

Two boys, ages 15 and 16, were ordered held on $750,000 bail today as police searched for a third suspect in the brutal beating and sexual assault of a Highland Park woman near the Congress Theater on New Year's Eve, officials say.

Terrance Ford, 15, and Aanwar Barbour, 16, appeared in bond court on charges of kidnapping, robbery and aggravated criminal sexual assault. Ford was wearing Homer Simpson pajamas, Barbour jeans and a black T-shirt. Both are charged as adults.

Barbour was arrested Monday at Oak Park and River Forest High School, where he is a student. Ford was arrested at his home on the Northwest Side of Chicago. The arrests were first reported by the Tribune this morning.

An arrest warrant has been issued for the third suspect, who is believed to be out of state, a police source said.

Don't be shy when you see a woman or younger girl walking alone at night -- Offer to walk with them or wait with them until a bus comes. I worked at bars for years and would get out pretty late. I would see a lot of other bar employees walking at 3 and 4 am and often times I would stop and offer rides or offer to ride along side them with my car windows down while they were walking a short distance. Or if they accepted rides I would say -- here you can hold my phone until you get out or you can hold onto my id until I drop you off. If I were taking a bus and saw someone that didn't look right saddling up next to a woman sitting alone I would bust in and be like -- Hey I didn't see you get on the bus! And just give the universal eye contact for "Do you need help?" We are so worried about looking foolish that we sometimes don't act on gut instinct. This attack happened in our back yard at a reasonable hour to a young girl. This incident should have everyone alerted to possible threats.

Actually, a lot of the wards that have experimented with permanent signs have declared them to be a failure. They've found that after awhile, they become "white noise" and residents forget about them and don't move, making the streets even harder to clean. I know in the 1st ward, Wicker Park was so bad they had to put lights on top of the signs to signal people that was their day. Then the lights broke. Not sure if they ever were repaired. I believe the 46th ward got rid of their signs altogether.

And I agree with Steve- everything works best when people keep the area in front of their house clean to begin with. The sweepers are much less likely to break down this way.

We plan to clean up around the Kennedy Expressway ramp on Webster as well as under the viaducts and east on Webster between Damen and Elston. Clean-up usually involves garbage pick-up, weed pulling/tree trimming if needed, sweeping, illegal sign removal, graffiti coverage or removal, and easy fencing repairs. The Clean-Up Meet-Up Crew will have brooms, garbage bags, rakes, tree trimming tools and paint supplies. Please bring your own work gloves, though we will have latex gloves for handling garbage. After the clean-up, we can have lunch at a nearby restaurant and have some fun with our neighbors!

Interested? Please RSVP to Christine Jensen at christine@scottforchicago.com so we know how many volunteers we can expect!

Hope to see you there!

Remember, high school students can earn community service hours by participating in the 32nd Ward Clean-Up Meet-Up or as a part of the 32nd Ward Street Team, so bring your kids and make it a family experience! Your Opinion on Wicker Park & Bucktown

The Wicker Park Bucktown Chamber of Commerce and WPB SSA #33 have hired Business Districts, Inc, to conduct a market study to identify our neighborhood's unique strengths and opportunities. Please take the survey now and pass the link on to your customers, partners, neighbors, friends and business owners. Your help completing and circulating the survey will be invaluable to the market study results and help our local economy thrive. Thank you!

So if I visit the Milwaukee/North/Damen Intersection business district, is that included in the Damen Ave commercial corridor business district, and if so, then do I select both? If it is not included, then where does the Milwaukee/North/Damen intersection business district end, and the Damen commercial corridor business district begin?

  • Please just select the most appropriate answer. I do agree it's a little bit confusing but instead of loading up the question with exact intersections and including every intersection which would make it incredibly long, we'd ask that you just answer approximately. That would be of most help to us. Thank you for your patience with this.

What's going into that building on the corner?

Some of the best conversations we've seen on EveryBlock have started with a question:

-What was that noise last night?
-Can anyone recommend a good mechanic in the neighborhood?
-Has anyone seen my black pug, Peter?
-Why were there helicopters flying around this morning?
-Did someone claiming to be selling alarm systems ring anyone else's doorbell yesterday?
-Does anyone know why there was a t.v. crew on the corner?
-Where can I drop off my recycling nearby?
-What's going into that building on the corner?

So if there's something you've been wondering about, don't hesitate to ask your EveryBlock neighbors by posting a message!

It's been a couple of years now since water seeped out of the concrete wall of the underpass and formed what some felt was the image of the virgin Mary. Someone noticed it and placed candles, the candles attracted more attention and the shrine evolved. A little news coverage and the faithful flocked to the silhouette and the shrine grew further. At some point the city removed the tokens of worship and painted the wall which was promptly cleaned by Mary's fans to restore the stain/silhouette and resurrect the shrine. Whatever your spiritual proclivity, it's worth a closer look as it provides an interesting glimpse into the heart and mind of your human neighbor.

New Building

Does anyone know what's going up across the street from SeaDog Sushi? Its over by the Montessori, and it looks like a YMCA or something.

  • Nicole Semple Activist/Architect/Baker

That is a gym addition to the Montessori school. You're referring to the building with the arched beams on top, yes?

This little trooper is very sweet, curious and playful but needs a permanent home. I am at my max with 2 dogs and 2 cats. He loves them all btw so other animals shouldn't be an issue. Any interest or know someone who might be willing to adopt him, please let me know and I can provide pics. I would love for him to settle into his permanent home soon. He's ready and would love to be the center of attention.

Thanks so much for your help!

Thanks so much Lou. I did talk to them. They're full at the moment but they are helping me screen potential candidates. I love Tree House =) Thanks again.

  • I work with TH. Did you put an admit request in for him/her and put him on the waiting list? When we get adoptions we then admit cats in that are on our waiting list. Sometimes you only just wait a couple of days. You just have to keep calling...

I work with TH. Did you put an admit request in for him/her and put him on the waiting list? When we get adoptions we then admit cats in that are on our waiting list. Sometimes you only just wait a couple of days. You just have to keep calling back. Secondly, I wouldn't adopt out the kitten without it being spayed/neutered, microchipped, and have their shots. You should make an appt at the TH low cost clinic 773-227-5535. It's very low cost and affordable. We don't want someone adopting and letting the cat out allowing it to impregnate or get pregnant. You can also check other no kill shelters.

It IS funny! And the comments we get are hilarious like: why are ghostbusters running down North Avenue pushing a shopping cart? OR I think a pack of wolves just ran past me on Division. So funny and a great cause =)

I saw three carts run by on Damen. I had NO idea what was going on, but they sure were having a ton o fun. Made my day.

It's time to clean & green!

Hey everyone. Spring is just around the corner and April 21st is the city's clean and green day.

Does your neighborhood have an activity planned yet? If so, feel free to post it on EveryBlock. And if not, don't hesitate to use EveryBlock to round up some volunteers!

  • call me Lou Jefferson Park Sox Fan

Certainly wish it was easier to do so. Trying to get a group together to pick up all the trash around the Jefferson Park Metra station. I've left emails & voice mails approx a week ago with both Metra & CTA. One refers you to the other. Frustrating!

Mugging at North and Leavitt this morning

One of my friends just witnessed a woman in her 20s getting punched in the face and having her purse snatched by a man at the intersection on North & Leavitt in Wicker Park. I don't have any other info except that it JUST happened - around 10am - and the woman is with the police now. Will be on the lookout for a new link to post, but wow...this is getting out of hand.

Stealing a car not very Yogi

At CorePower Yoga on Milwaukee and Wabansia a man reported someone stole his keys from the studio locker room and then stole his Mercedes. The thief had the cahones to walk into the studio, purchase a class and then hang around the locker room until he can make his move.

That 's all I know.

  • Inactive user

Some branches of the religious tradition out of which yoga came preach that owning things is a burden. Maybe he was an undercover yogi, seeking to enable the Mercedes-owner to reach enlightenment faster by relieving him of the burden of owning this car.

New to the site - Just wanted to make it known that my car window was smashed and some things were stolen from my car, specifically a GPS. It was not in plain view. Glove box and center console were rifled through. Happened sometime between 9:00PM last night and 7:00AM this morning.

  • alex trebeck Ukrainian Village since 1990

Sorry to hear that. Where was the car?

  • Should have made that more clear. Car was parked on the 800 block of N Western Ave. Well lit area. Thieves seem to be getting more brazen.

If these new businesses succeed, then we hope that other potential hospitality industry owners will follow suit and open more bars and restaurants in Humboldt.

This Tuesday, February 21ST, we will be trying out "Bullhead Cantina" at 1143 North California(just South of Division Street).
We are meeting at 7PM. If you would like to attend and dine with us, that would be great. If you just want to stop by and meet your neighbors, thats fine too.

There is no fee, everyone just pays for what they eat and/or drink.
This is open to anyone that wants to show up, so I hope to see some new faces, or East Humboldt faces.

    CHEERS!

  • Abby 60622 Looking to meet my neighbors...

Thanks for spreading the word about our group, both Michael and Becca! Toni, looked forward to metting you both on 3/7!

Finding info about my public officials

So March 20th is coming up soon. It's my first time to vote (I'm really excited!), and also the first anniversary of living in Chicago. I live in the 26th Ward and the 34th Precinct. What exactly is the difference between a ward and a precinct?

I'm checking out the Chicago Elections website, and boy, there's a lot of public officials! I understand the March 20th voting is a primary election vote. Still, all of this has me thinking about other questions I have regarding Chicago politics, elections and public representation.

1. When is it that voting for alderpeople and other local officials takes place? (It's probably complicated, I know)
2. What would your "voting hierarchy" be. That is, if you had to pay attention to the policies of and vote for, say, three levels of public official at the local level, what would they be?
3. After some searching I figured out that my Alderman is Maldonado. His website is kind of skimpy regarding any kind of blatant platform statements. Is there a website that you know of that helps me compare and contrast Chicago politicians' stances on issues?

Thanks for y'alls insights.

Anton/B: I deleted comments that were about national politics (i.e., Bush vs. Obama) and didn't pertain to your question.

Just found the Tribune elections website, too. http://elections.chicagotribune.com/editorial/

Chalk up another resource. Seems like I'll be doing very little voting, actually, seeing as most of the people who represent me are running uncontested!

I've seen a lot unmakred vehicles that are obviously police cars driving around tonight. Have seen multiple (SUV, normal car) around Milwaukee and Wood and other spots driving around. Don't think anything has happened, so it is good to see the beefed up security. Anybody know what is up with this? Seems like lots of people out tonight enjoying a safe evening in WP!!
