  • Lincoln Park High School reviewed

Talking about Lincoln park High! About 45 years ago, I knew someone who had gone there! It was like the "Dumping grounds" for students then, with little hope of it ever becoming a school of note! But what a transformation! My G-daughter was accepted there, and trying to be the ever-helpful G-Parent, I warned her & my daughter to find another school! Then, having first thought that LPHS must be a new school recently built in the vicinity, I began to research, but could not find anything but, yes, the old Waller building! So I thought, it must be a mistake, that my daughter had uncovered a magnet school somewhere in the old neighborhood! As I researched, I found that, yes indeed, Waller had become a kin d of Magnet school, where not only could neighborhood kids attend, but gifted kids from all over Chicago as well! Nowadays, everyone wants to go there, including my G-Daughter, who had wanted to go to Lane Tech originally, but now forgot all about that, and is now eager to begin her studies at LPHS! It makes me proud to be a Chicagoan by birth, but proud that the Chicago public schools have made such strides in such a short period of time! Now I feel honored @ her acceptance there!

Coyote Sighting?

Did anyone else catch a glimpse of the coyote (?) running down Clybourn Ave this morning around 7:45 AM?

I was driving to work, heading South on Clybourn, and had just crossed over Ashland when I saw, what I thought was a coyote sprinting full-speed in the opposite direction. It was running on the sidewalk straight towards the busy Ashland / Fullerton / Clybourn intersection. As a dog owner, this has me concerned. Any other sightings?

  • My kids and I trailed one for a few blocks around Wells and Goethe last Thursday. It got chased by a German Shepard in the Franklin Fine Arts playlot on Wells and disappeared into the night. I called 311, but there is no way the response time of the animal control unit is fast enough to catch a coyote on the run.

Yes, I've seen it many times on Clybourn and in the alley behind our house on Maud....hunting for rats.

Dog attacked at Trebes Park

My dog was looking for a place to urinate at the corner of Webster and Clifton, when suddenly a guy walked up to her with his dog without asking. My dog was looking for a place to urinate at the corner of Webster and Clifton, when suddenly a guy walked up to her with his dog without asking. His dog is approx. 40-50 lbs. and looks like an Australian shepherd - border collie mix. The dogs were sniffing each other and out of nowhere his dog grabbed onto my dog's back and shook her back and forth like she was a piece of meat (she's a beagle and weighs 22 lbs). Initially I didn't see any blood and the guy left. However she was clearly in pain when we got inside and that's when I saw she had giant puncture wounds in her back and needed to go to the emergency vet. Please keep your eye out for this dog. It looks like an Australian shepherd - border collie mix. I wish he knew the pain and suffering he has caused my dog.

  • The owner was probably in his late 20's/early 30's, light brownish blonde hair, thin build, and on the taller side... I think the dog might have been older. I hope that helps? The dog looked just like this one http://imgur.com/XzBTsK0

  • Lincoln Park High School reviewed by a student

I'm currently a junior at LPHS. After reading some of these reviews,i've seen alot of negative feed back. Lincoln park is an excellent school for kids who want to find their true selves because Lincoln Park opens up their eyes in a way they've never did before. Before I came Lp I had no idea that I was talented, important,or smart. i've lived on the far south side for my whole life and only knew what I saw and was told,I never wanted to learn more. I was bullied from pre-k through 8th grade because i'm black with naturally red hair and I was diferent ,which made me hate my hair and myself. When I came to Lincoln Park, the kids embraced my hair and my character and made me feel like I mattered. I was never smart,so my grades, were low and no high school would accept me;but LPHS was the only one that did,out of 12 schools. Lphs gave me a chance at a better education and I'm so grateful. Now some of the staff are rude and ignorant, but so are 50% of Americans now of days. I hate my counselor because she's not good but the rest our border-line perfect. If you want your kid to be ready for the real world then send them Lphs because it's a really good school

Oz Park Toilets

Dear Aldermistress Smith: More than hundreds of people in Oz Park this beautiful Friday afternoon having a wonderful spring outing. Some of us looked for places to eliminate only to find bushes to squat in that were next to the children's playgrounds. Won't you please plant some scrubs away from children area or ask the city to provide some portable toilets??

  • oz neighbor 32 years in LP

Please thank the Park district for the porta pottis. They put them in the Park every spring in time for the kids baseball season.
Ms Smith had nothing to do with this, the Park supervisor got them put in. Oh I forgot, one more thing for Smith to take credit for that she didn't do!

  • O V

I apologize in advance if the post was meant to be funny to bring attention to the fact there need to be porter potties in the park to eliminate the 'bush squatting'. It's just that being a resident of this wonderful city and seeing people 'eliminate' themselves anywhere they please (including a playground across the street from my house), it wouldn't surprise me if you were serious about it.

A Worthy Cause

Saving the Black Duck and preserving the historic Halsted Willow Gateway to the Sheffield Historic District is a worthy cause. DNA's article on the the history of Chicago Magic and the Black Duck exemplifies the many hidden gems that are often lost. Thanks DNA.
