What has John Garrido done to bring officers to the 45th ward?

After hearing the debates between alderman Arena and John Garrido and hearing their main arguments, my question is what has John Garrido done as a police lieutenant to bring more police officers to the ward since he works at the 16th district police station?

After hearing the debates between alderman Arena and John Garrido and hearing their main arguments, my question is what has John Garrido done as a police lieutenant to bring more police officers to the ward since he works at the 16th district police station?

On his website he states "Portage Park is on the front line of this battle, and we need all the resources we can get to keep this and other ward neighborhoods safe. I know and understand how the Chicago Police Department works. As alderman, I will demand that our community is provided with the necessary police manpower and equipment to combat these violent gangs and keep our streets safe."
http://johngarrido.com/issues/public-safety/

At his current position has he demanded more officers be brought to the ward? Many may say that is not his job, but when you google "What does a police lieutenant do?" you get
"As a police lieutenant you lead. You're the frontline commander of the police department. You pass orders from the top level of command to the police sergeants, who in turn relay those orders to the police officers and detectives."

He says he will demand more officers as alderman but has he done the same as a lieutenant? If he has not at his current position why would that change when he is an alderman?

Hello Neigborhood

Hello all,

My wife Rebekah and I just moved to the neighborhood. We bought our first house and are super excited!!!

  • Lynn OIP Resident / CPS Mom

Welcome, Tim and Rebekah. I'm not sure where you live, but if you are in Old Irving Park, you might want to check out our neighborhood association. www.oldirvingpark.com. We have a monthly newsletter delivered to your door, weekly e-mail blast with activities, daily facebook updates, and monthly meetings. Oh - and a really active google group!

  • Welcome! I hope you like it, it's a great place to start and stay. You have come at an excellent time; the six corners area has been slowly turning around and filling in more vacant spots, you'll never know what new store or business will open up next. If you have any questions or concerns, this is a great web site to get support from your community. :)

NBC News video of Pawn Shops in 30th Ward

This video from a story NBC5 news did, is for anyone who cares about the 30th ward. It was shared with me recently regarding the politics of this ward and the impact of too many pawn shops in neighborhoods. Copy and paste in your browser to watch. It is deplorable.

  • Kelly, if you want more exposure on EB for your posts, try posting in a wider location. You can post to a whole ward or zip code for example. This post you made is only showing up in Cragin, so only people who follow or check on Cragin will see it. That's probably a pretty small number of people compared to zip codes or wards.

  • I don't know how to do that! But would love it if you could copy and post to wards/zip codes that may be affected, if it is no trouble. Thanks

Anyone have the best cost effective solution to stopping sewage backup in basements due to floods? I'm planning on trying a drain plug for the basement drain but what about the utility sink that also lets in sewage? The last few years were exhausting...

New Grocery Store just South of Diversey on Laramie's East side.

From the signage on the new awnings installed on the building at the SE corner of Diversey and Laramie it looks like we're getting a new grocery store there called Pancho's. What's odd is there are still "For Rent" signs in the windows.

  • Kapel Local Resident

Is there any word on when this new store will be opening, or did they run into a problem?

  • I walked by yesterday (Thurs) & noticed the permits were pulled 2 years ago......Not very promising.

Lawn Care Suggestions?

Its been 25 years since I had a regular lawn service. Time to start it again (now retired 5+ years). Any suggestions? What are costs like now? How often should it be done? Any other hints/do & don'ts on this? Thanks for comments!

Sol De Mexico recommended

We may not be considered an entertainment district with a lot of great restaurants and pubs like Edison Park or Logan Square but we have a restaurant of entertainment district quality in our midst. We tried Sol De Mexico last night and were very impressed and will definitely go back. The food was above average and so was the Tequila :-)

I was told last week by the Alderman's office(Suarez) that apparently the location of the new Senor Pan was zoned residential (How the heck that is, I'll never understand) & there were some "zone issues" that have been taken care of. It won't be a dine in, but carry out only. Fine with me! Thanks for the 6 corner referral. Been to Percolator & Harding Tap as well. LOVED Percolator, not so impressed w/Harding Tab but what do I know? I absolutely love Dunlays in Logan Sq. A great atmosphere, drink & food. Feels like "Cheers" (if you go there too much I suppose) Would love more great places to walk to in Belmont/Cragin. The Starlight at Central/Fullerton is a nice coffee shop/cheap food place. Not a Mom & Pop feel, but local & good none-the-less. I appreciate Mexican food, but would like more variety here~

Chicagonewbie, I guess this is what my neighbors were referring to regarding Senor Pan. There was a lot of work put into that building last summer to convert it from a closed front knife sharpening business back to storefronts which was how the building was originally built. What seems really strange is how this building could have been zoned "Residential" when there was a business there for over 30 years. Dine in would be nice but "carry out" will be good too, as long as they can open up. Percolator is always a good stop for a snack before seeing a movie or event at The Patio Theater, gotta love their soups. Harding Tap, along with other Logan Square establishments, is usually a good burger and beer stop before a movie at the Logan. Did a lot of stops at Harding last spring when the Logan was screening the Blackhawks playoffs games. Haven't been to Starlight since our son went to Prosser HS, but it was always good. We'll have to try Dunlay's sometime. Hopefully the Hawks will be in the playoffs again and the Logan will screen the games again and we'll stop for a snack there before the game. I agree, the Mexican food in the area is great, we love Zacateca's on Diversey. But we miss having some culinary variety in the neighborhood.

Hit and Run 3/12/15

Went to Grand and Central walked in - office asked how can I help you told her Hit and Run, when they all had a chuckle because there have been so many today. My poor Saturn bumper all tore up - neck hurts, arm hurts from shock I had both hands on the wheel. - Many times I have stopped for people in accidents and given plate numbers I am hoping that this time I get pay back. It appeared to have two people in front seat - dirty plate - has to have some front bumper damage. Thanks

And oh yeah I complained to police about the dispatcher. Police said dispatcher should have said to drive over right away. She said "They're not cops they got their jobs due to alderman" Can't wait for Millie to be my new alderman - This ward needs a fresh start and lots and lots of reform.

  • I was in a similar situation when I was hit. He stopped and I cut him off . It turns out he was an illegal, no insurance, no licsense, and could not speak English. I called ICE and the took him away in chains. The CPD gave him a few tickets and he will be deported. The area you describe is full of law breaking people. Good Luck.

  • Guarantee he will not be deported!

I was surprised to see that the Aldi Store seemed to have an overwhelming support for the new proposed plan. I guess when I think about it, it would be nice to have it away from the main intersection, and Aldi really want to be here and support our community, and we can suggest a trader Joes in a few years when the Bank of America lot at the 6 corners intersection comes to it's planning stages. Perhaps we can get Aldi to incorporate a few additional cosmetic changes to this location such as a nicer looking floor tile? Any thoughts?
