CHA not honoring their commitments in Bronzeville?!

http://hpherald.com/2014/07/30/vanishing-promises-made-to-the-poor-of-our-ward/?utm_campaign=vanishing-promises-made-to-the-poor-of-our-ward&utm_medium=rss&utm_source=rss

Questions:
1. Does this model work?
2. Where have the displaced folks lived since the high rises came down?
3. For those intent on returning, isn't it better to have adequate schools, grocery stores, jobs, and community resources that will provide a higher standard of living for everyone?

  • grandma 13-year Douglas resident

The goal of the community should be to bring in more homeowners and high quality businesses in order to increase our property tax base.

  • Rick Roche bronzeville father of 4

Couple of things: Promises are not binding; things change including markets, financial realities (City needs more money which public housing generates at a much lower rate than market based development) and priorities.
Also, communities are made by people not by government policy. My feeling is that the government constructed ghettos were a colossal failure. The black middle class and working class can keep Bronzeville bronze by buying property, living here and renting to family and friends and keeping gun-toting thugs at bay.

Promontory Restaurant/Bar to Open Shortly Before the Apocalypse

Oft-delayed restaurant and live music venue, Promontory, is scheduled to open as the End of Days approaches, according to informed sources. "Our two outdoor patios will offer splendid views of the Four Horsemen as they ride in to lay waste to humanity," said an unnamed soon to be out of work employee. "Try our BBQ" he added.

  • zgwarnki Now, I can say Kenwood. Thanks, Obama!

Adrienne, I crashed the friends and family event on the 17th and have legitimately dined and drank at The Promontory two other times since the official grand opening last Wednesday. So far, I can safely say that it was worth the wait. Working my way through both food and drink menus with good results. As of now, the summer fruit trifle is my favorite food item. Eagerly awaiting the opening of the upstairs live music venue. Why didn't Diana and other people there of whom I inquired about you recognize your name?

  • I did not work on this project. My boss has several other businesses that I work on, on the commercial real estate side, but I stay away from the restaurant stuff. But I'm glad you enjoyed it! The first show upstairs is in August. I am excited too!

Maracas is open

A new Latin restaurant, Maracas, recently opened in Bronzeville. People should give it a try. I hope to stop by next week.

http://www.suntimes.com/lifestyles/28320016-423/the-312-founder-of-boriqua-chicks-open-latin-restaurant-maracas-in-bronzeville.html

  • Tried Maracas last week. We had the empanadas (? Spelling) dinner. The flavor was good but they may have been over cooked because the crust was dark and a little dry. The price $8 included two empanadas over a bed of rice & beans with a side of plantines and mango sauce. I look forward to trying other items on the menu. Time correction, they close at 8pm on Saturdays.

  • Juan from South Loop 13 year South Loop resident

I tried Maracas today. I had the Beef Steak with Yellow Rice. The flavor was nice and the portions was good. The steak could have been a little more tender but was still very good. Look forward to trying the Beef stew on my next visit.

35th st. Pedestrian Bridge set to begin construction next week

With improvements at Lake Meadows, repaving of King dr., scheduled repaving of 35th you could say we are on the fast track of infrastructure improvement.

  • I think the word that needs to be defined is HIJACK - take over (something) and use it for a different purpose.

  • Bronzeville Curmudgeon Director, Bronzeville Visitor Information Center

thatblow1, minor correction on your 4 points perspective- The name is Bronzeville Curmudgeon. Not to be confused with Brownsville, which I think is a suburb of New York city.

This retail establishment feasted on the desparate condition of the community and had no shame in selling this garbage and it's bastardized version of retail, while sucking the limited resources from this community and importing our wealth to their neighborhoods without a shred of guilt. Well a new day is dawning in Bronzeville, and all you Jamaican foods style buisness owners and you know who you are, your days for exploiting this community are numbered. There is a new community coming into Bronzeville and we don't want exploitation, we want retail, and we know how to get it. These loiterers that linger all day outside your buisnesses well we are tired of it, and I think our Aldermen are maybe getting on the same page as us and if that happens that would really put this on the fast track to solving what everybody knows is keeping us from moving forward.

Jamaican me happy

Rode my bike down 43rd and Cottage to find Jamaica Foods has been closed. Thats a good sign of turnaround. Also noticed a lot of sidewalk work happening on King Drive, hope some folks from the community got jobs doing that work.

  • Rick Roche bronzeville father of 4

THe city is spending tens of thousands of tax dollars on the corner curb replacement on King; meanwhile the street in the 3500 block has been flooding for years. Priorities??

  • I don't know for sure who got the jobs on king dr, but im willing to bet no one from the community is employed here.i hope I'm wrong.
