Too many wards in Englewood? Is anyone listening???

We found this quote on the Sixth Ward Blog which came from another blogger's website www.strannik01.livejournal.com.

There were some comments about Englewood and other communities regarding the ward remapping process....

As a fyi, RAGE has always felt the wards should work in more collectively, as a Greater Englewood Caucus or either be condensed so that there is a more unified voice from the neighborhood.

There were some comments about Englewood and other communities regarding the ward remapping process....

As a fyi, RAGE has always felt the wards should work in more collectively, as a Greater Englewood Caucus or either be condensed so that there is a more unified voice from the neighborhood.

We hope our voice has been heard by the Black Caucus and other groups because according to this blogger he/she thinks it is not....

"Englewood is one of the poorest, most crime-ridden neighborhoods in Chicago. Today, Englewood is divided between five wards. One might assume that this would mean that Englewood residents would be happy to have five aldermen defending their interests. However, unlike Hyde Park, Englewood does not have a strong network of institutions and community organizations that would rally the voters to elect candidates and hold them accountable. So the aldermen tend to focus their energies in neighborhoods where they have substantial territory. The few efforts they make on Englewood's behalf tend to be sporadic. The fact that none of the aldermen involved have their ward offices in Englewood only re-enforces the sense that in Chicago politics, this impoverished community is an afterthought. Under the Black Caucus proposal, Englewood would be split between four wards. While that's better than five, it still doesn't address the issue. At least one Englewood community group has been lobbying for fewer wards, but so far, the Black Caucus doesn't seem to be listening."

What are your thoughts? Is anyone listening to the concerns of the residents?

  • So where is Englewood?

  • Dee B Englewoodian since 1960.

Englewood is bordered by 55th Street to the north, 75th Street to the south, Racine Ave to the west, and State St to the east. It is located on the southwest side of Chicago, Illinois.

Congressman's Rush Meeting Today: Were You Invited

Congressman's Bobby Rush Meeting: Were You Invited

The Congressman of the 1st Congressional district Congressman Bobby L. Rush had another one of his reactionary meetings today. A who's who of Chicago political, non profits and others attended. Who was there representing the residents, grass root organizations of Chatham, Grand Crossing, Englewood, South Shore, etc. Although some of these individuals are elected do they really represent us. Most are scared of social media and issue canned statements. I find it ironic...

I find it ironic that Rush talks about jobs when his church's non profit Rebirth of Englewood(ROE) received millions (WOW program)of dollars from the Congressional Black Caucus but yet the organization and developers disappeared with no answers and can't account for almost $1.0 million that was allocated for a tech center in Englewood, Chicago that could have provided training for individuals so they could go out and find jobs. Was this political pandering or real concern? What do you think?

Walked on 79th from Cottage to Calumet (Fleck's) around 10 Wednesday morning. There was no bus in sight, and it beat waiting at 79th and Cottage. Police cars were parked at all corners of the first block west of Cottage. The farther west I walked, the more police cars and news trucks I saw. A few officers stood outside in the drizzling rain. I wondered whether that level of attention was there when stray bullets hit the real estate agent and her colleagues the week before. Curious, I asked an officer what was happening. They told me about the gathering in Congressman Rush's office. One police officer stood a few feet east of the door of Rush's office. A woman stood behind the glass door. She had just let someone in, and appeared to be guarding it.

Walking to Fleck's, I wondered whether those officers could have been put to better use responding to 911 calls. And which of the usual suspects they were protecting? The politicians and preachers who appear--cameras and reporters in tow--after a "high profile" crime? What tangible outcomes would result? Who--besides the politicians and preachers--would benefit? Would anyone come up with a real plan for improving education at all schools? Would anyone support efforts toward anger management and conflict resolution at any and every level possible? Or was this just another photo and financial opportunity for the usual suspects?

    We shall see.

Sharing the News in Englewood

We just want to clear the air that RAGE will post many events and meetings happening in the Englewood area in an effort to engage more residents to get involved. You can find many of these meetings or events posted here: http://ragenglewood.org/events/

Please know this does not mean we are endorsing these events but merely sharing the info. If we are the sponsors we will make that perfectly clear in our post.

Thanks in advance and keep the news coming our way at joinrage@gmail.com!

Stevie Wonder can see that the organization is against all incumbents. Just fess up and admit it.

  • Libby Booker Beverly transplant

That's not a bad thing, considering what the incumbents have NOT done for the community. There are intelligent, talented people ready to step into governing roles. Stand aside establishment.

  • RAGE-Resident Association of Greater Englewood Residents united for positive change!

By no means are we against all incumbents, we are against anyone who is not working for the greater good of the community....We will continue to highlight the individuals, organizations or even current alderman who are working for and not against the community...
