In East side and North side neighborhoods kids are safe enough that they can walk to/from school safely. It is only in neighborhoods where policing is poor that parent's have to walk their kids to school because of the crime/gang/drug problems.

This is a policing issue not a good parenting issue. Why should parents in our neighborhood have to walk the kids when parents in other neighborhoods don't even have to worry that something might happen to their kids.

I am not going to let my neighbors take the brunt of blame for bad things happening here. There is plenty to go around for everyone. If everyone just did a little more to care and learn the right moves...we could have better progress.

Currently there are very few that go to the records, look, study, make a plan...and get positive things to happen.

So who is the problem? The liquor seller or the liquor user? The drug seller or the drug user? Racism is a bad thing all the way around.

There would be NO STORES at all here if some one didn't come and open a business. Blacks don't open business, whites don't open business...who is left? Some immigrant that had a harder time in the country they left that we bombed...than they have dealing with gang/drug people in our neighborhood.

Remember...the cost of government spending by city hall is in the billions...maybe 6 billion. Where is our fair share? Where are the jobs? Where is the Safety? Where is the GOOD education for our kids...Where is the economic development?

We didn't get our share. Who didn't give it to us...what color were they? What color were the politicians?

A small nobody store owner in our neighborhood didn't deprive us of anything. It was our government that failed us; that is who to blame.

  • MCBratcher Resident

Most importantly, the girl was able to escape! That's an answer to prayer!

West Garfield Park: 'They still out here with guns'

This is an interesting article. I, for the most part agree with the comments made by people that were interviewed. People are very nice in WGP and it does have a lot of quiet moments, but it could be much better. I've been here since '05 and have never witnessed a serious crime. My biggest peeves are the garbage, unkempt properties, open-air drugs sales that are allowed to go on day and night and ignored by the CPD, gang activity and the amount of loitering that's allowed to happen. And of course Alderman Jason Ervin...the lazy Alderman who must not realize how physically disgusting and filthy the 28th ward is. Especially W. Madison Street.

Overall, it's not so bad but the dysfunction gets a little overwhelming at times.
