Surprise Block Party 3200 West Potomac, Saturday August 16TH

I have lived on this block for almost 20 years, and I just found out that we are having a block party this Saturday. As far as I know, nobody asked the residents if they even wanted a block party , let alone when to have it. But one of my neighbors (unmarried, no kids, etc ???) evidently took it upon himself to make this decision for the entire street.

Well, I guess this isn't as bad as the last time he did it 8 years ago when all of a sudden at 10AM on a random Saturday morning HE closed the street and pounded on everyone's doors to make them move their cars..

So, officially, don't park on the 3200 block of Potomac on Saturday from 9AM to 6PM.

There is no block club for this block, but it is affiliated with The United Blocks of West Humboldt Park, who also had no knowledge of this event. Several of my neighbors and myself are unable to attend, but would have enjoyed and contributed to a party had we only known.

  • Thanks Emilio,
I know he has a permit. I am not trying to stop it, I just wish we were informed earlier so we could attend. I think block parties are a great idea, but again, if we all knew about it, it would probably be bigger, better attended, and a present a well needed chance to socialize with my neighbors.

  • Emilio Concerned resident

Agreed Glenn, he should have let residents know, it's the right thing to do. The guy on our block got an earful from myself and our neighbors.

Homeowners insurance

Seeking help, my home owners policy was basically canceled because they sent some idiot to look at the house and my dog barked. My dog has now been labeled as aggressive and I received a cancellation notice. So liberty Mutual dropped me, Statefarm wants 3000 a year and the online insurance failed because of my dog No other reason. I pulled my Clue report and there is nothing on it and no claims EVER made on my home in 30yrs. I'm confused

  • Sarah Marmor dachshundist

Wow, what a terrible thing to say to this dog owner. My (frequently barking) dogs are not a "dangerous" breed, but there are plenty of what people would call pit bulls on my block. And all are wonderful, loving dogs that do not merit the demonization being displayed here. Luckily, some actual, constructive help is being offered our neighbor by others here.

  • From my experience homes get inspected randomly by insurance companies, and if they hear a barking dog (that sounds possibly ferocious) they want to know the breed of the dog. If the dog is on the "dangerous breed list" they can cancel. I don't agree with it but insurance companies...

Fortunately all insurance companies do not have the same guidelines and we have options, which is why I offered a helpful suggestion as an insurance broker. I don't know why the conversation on this website always turn into some person judging someone else and quite frankly I'd wish people stuck to the subject instead of their personal issues.

Jason--I was talking to hpwr, who is extremely politically active and will want all the information he can get, so he can work hard for whichever candidate he choses. She will be coming around to you. I'm well aware of how it works, but I also know hpwriter is a well-reasearched man, which is why I'm encouraging him to conduct some field research as well. I will reach out to the campaign workers to see what happened on Mozart. One of the main volunteers lives on Mozart. And just to be clear, again, I think the bigger fight is against Maldonado, and I haven't decided, but most of my friends and colleagues have been pointing me in one direction.

  • Ps. I talked with Corona the other day and was super pleased.

Turkey V

Has anyone seen what appears to be a turkey vulture circling around California and Augusta?
I noticed it appear after a kid fell off his bike and skinned his knee. Smelling blood, the turkey-v swooped down at the boy. Thankfully the boy's brother was there with a baseball bat and took a few whacks at his beak.
I'm worried about one of the neighborhood kids being carried away and snacked upon. Please be alert guys.

  • Reminds me to make it to Turkey Chop @ 3506 W Chicago Ave.

  • I used to live by an enormous group of turkey vultures. It freaked me out how they would fly in circles, like in the cartoons. Then I learned that is just their social flight. They aren't so much looking for something to die as they are leaving their nest and landing again, in a certain order, to establish their order and dominance.

Are there really turkey vultures living in the city? The ones I've seen come in 6-foot wing spans!!!

Humboldt Haus On Sacramento Blvd. and North Ave. Now Open!

Great news, it is now open but not the deli bar yet. I talked to Mike who said he was a co-owner and the hours now are 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. Monday to Saturday and 10 A.M. to 9 P.M. on Sunday. Mike also added that the 16 taps section will be open in another month. I asked him to join us on Nextdoor and Everyblocks and inform all of the date when the whole restaurant will be open for business. I am looking forward to the grand opening, i will be thirsty! The name of the place is Humboldt Haus.

  • ditto for me on the sign, don't think they need to scream LIQUORS; I am sure word will get around

  • Seth Captain Real estate agent with a Conscience & a Lollipop

Why don't they put up another massive sign that says HOT CHEETOS. To the owners: Please get rid of your tasteless sign that says LIQUORS. It is a disservice to all the long term residents who have struggled to improve the conditions of the neighborhood. A few smaller brand promos in the window and HUMBOLDT HAUS SANDWICH SHOP marquee would be more appropriate. And maybe offering a 5 cent discount for turning in an empty Flaming Hot Cheeto Bag

Legal to block traffic?

I'm more than a bit frustrated with the traffic jam caused on Kimball just north of Division every Sunday. The new life church has gentlemen (no CPD badge or traffic management uniform) block traffic on kimball so 10-20 cars at a time can exit their parking lot. I thought cars exiting alleys and private drives did not have the right of way. Is this practice legal? I was stopped on kimball at 2 blocks north of division for almost 10 minutes this morning.

3 bedroom apartment in Humboldt Park, $1200. Call/text or email me if want details or may be interested. 773-676-7492, talktocindia@aol.com

  • This doesn't really qualify as neighborhood news. I know many people may find this sort of information helpful so I won't go the "Every Block isn't Craigslist" route, but if you are going to post this sort of stuff, it should at least be under Housing so people can filter it out(though as someone who works in real estate, I'm sure you know better than to post this here anyway).

  • Sarah Marmor dachshundist

I have a lot of friends looking for places in this tight rental market, and this is helpful imho.

  • As part time I'm working as leasing agent, I'm posting over 100 apartments on Craigslists. Do you want me or other agents start posting on Everyblock ? When this happens EV will be done, that's why people should not advertise theirs apartments right here. It is so many different web sites dedicated to rental. Original poster is not even owner of this apartment, she is real estate broker.

*Division St. closed off all day Saturday
*Parking on surrounding residential streets overburdened with attendees
*People pulling in and backing out of the over-capacity church parking lot dangerously into oncoming traffic (and subsequent horn honking, etc) to go look for parking elsewhere
*Trash left behind by attendees on our streets, parkways and sidewalks (see photo)
*The absence of notification to area residents about the Fest

I am happy for them and the event, and have no problem with what they do on their property. Their building and grounds is really nice.

What I find curious and problematic is that a 4000 member church has less than 100 parking spots, and it is dramatically affecting the immediate area.

Their parcel is several acres in size, but more than half of it was used to dump building debris which was then covered with dirt and it formed a grassy hill with a trail on it.

The grass hill and large lawn is certainly pleasant to look at, but when there are large services or huge events like this, the infrastructure (parking, streets) are inundated beyond capacity for the duration of these events/services.

An immediate neighbor of the church recently posted on NextDoor, which many of you cannot see, that two bus stops that used to be located on the formerly commercial/warehousing strip in front of the church on Division St. were re-located in front of residences and a business (both E & W bound), including in front of an auto repair shop that has a curb cut.

Moving these bus stops gave the church at least 8 more spots in front of their facility, but it took away at least 8 spots in front of residences and the business.

Moving those bus stops costs tens of thousands of dollars. Where did that money come from?

My question is how a brand new structure/development on a huge parcel with a predictable use of 1000 or more members at a time was approved w/less than 100 parking spots?

I admit, my annoyance about the inflatable bouncy houses blocking the street instead of being located on the grassy lot seems trite.

However, overloading and dominating infrastructure that is taxpayer funded to accommodate the built-in needs of a tax-exempt organization bothers me. The inflatable was just a reminder.

I expect that new sidewalks, street lights, and relocating overhead wires away from the ever beautifying visage of New Life will be another tax-payer funded "improvement" to our Ward.

  • Elise Doody-Jones Logan Square Resident

Have you discussed this issue with your Alderman ? That is what they are there for.
    My suggestion is:
You collect a hand full of neighbors, get a list of complaints and a list of ideas on how to solve the problem and request a meeting with the Alderman and New Life. Calmly address the issues and work them out together.

Perhaps New Life is so busy trying to help people that they don't know that they are having a negative impact on those around them.

Riotfest tix

Last year i heard that residents of Humboldt Park are offered free tickets to Riotfest. Any truth to that?

  • I just moved to the north side of the park and sent them an email to see if they're offering anything to residents this year. I'll update when/if I get a reply!

  • Azra Owner/primary care providor at West Town Daycare

I sent an email and Facebook message last year with no response back. Seems as though they don't want people knowing but will give tix if residents directly in front ask for them. I've been lucky two years in a row. Considering the traffic and the fact the the music is LOUD inside our homes with closed windows, it's a fair trade.

construction at Lafayette school

Hi all!
Has anyone else been disturbed by the construction noise at Lafayette school (2714 W Augusta) lately? They've been starting in the 6:00am hour, well before the city ordinance allows. I've called police to complain several times and went to Alderman Maldonado's office last week to file a complaint, but it started this morning again at about 6:15am. Wondering if others are noticing this too...

  • Rai Rai Rai Rai

Ok I just can't take it any longer!! Each day the constructions starts just a bit earlier than the day before! This morning I heard those machines as warily as 5am!! This has gotten out of hand and something needs to be done!! I've called 911 several times and each time I'm told a car will be sent but that never happens. Does any have any other suggestions?

    Hi Rai Rai,

I feel your pain. I called the police on about 10 different occasions, but no one ever showed. I made an earlier post (see my post above from July 2nd) saying that I have a reporter from the Reader who is doing a piece on this, as well as Alderman Maldonado's total lack of response to this and other neighborhood issues. If you'd like to speak with the reporter please click on my profile and send me an email with your contact info and I will be glad to pass this along. Unfortunately this seems to be our only means for getting anything done, since cops won't show up and the Alderman has made it clear that he will not take any action. I've contacted Maldonado's office several times about this, and my messages have gone unreturned and I have been hung up on. I'm very happy that they're working on the school, but waking up residents for months at 5 or 6am is really unacceptable.
    Thanks!

Humboldt Haus?

Any idea on when Humboldt Haus will open there deli or is this turning into another liquor store as evidenced by the by liquor sign?

  • Squeak-O Your friendly neighborhood Gladys Kravitz.

They are not running just another liquor store. The selection is really good, quality wines from small producers and a nice craft beer selection priced well. I stopped in and had a nice chat with the owner. He's looking forward to getting the deli open but things with the city and building capital take time. Stop in and talk to the man behind the counter before passing judgment.

  • RAKARWOWSKI RETIRED CITY WORKER, CLEANING UP HUMBOLDT PARK

I talked to a owner some time ago, still no deli, I think the sign sucks! I had big hopes for this place, first just a liquor store, deli did not open in February and now this ghetto sign. Just what the neighborhood doesn't need. I talked to the man behind the counter so I guess I can pass judgment.
