UPDATE.....I went to the Humboldt Park Advisory Council meeting Thursday night at 6:30 P.M., Max Wagner a RF coordinator stated "Mike who runs RF has NOT decided if RF will be held in HP"!!!!! From what I understood, RF is being made to jump through hoops to have the fest in HP. I listened as the HPAC President "Amy Vega" told Max that she had sent FOIA requests on funds RF paid to the park district for repairs from last years flood during RF. Another member complained that Sacramento was closed one day prior. There was talk of the food trailers in HP going after RF for lost income because setting up days before RF. Max remarked that Sacramento was only closed for an hour that day, the food trailers have a contract with the park district and have given three options on setting up during RF. This RF did not have to do but reached out to the food trailers to help any way RF could! Max went on that the drains in the park were filled with GREASE, gravel and dirt which contributed to the flooding last year. Amy remarked that clogged drains have been a problem going back as far as 2008 in other locations in the park. Max pointed out clearly that RF has to follow Park District rules and complaints about thous rules being followed belong to the Park District and should be made to them and not placed onto RF.
I do not understand why a fest that does so much good "the list is to long to write here" for HP is being questioned on such minor matters? Shootings and gang activity do not spike during this fest! Why are they getting such a hard time making HP a great place to live by the powers in City Hall? Now is the time citizens of HP! If you love RF, write and call your Alderman, The Mayor and attend Humboldt Park Advisory Council meetings and make your voice be heard! RF needs us to show our overwhelming support.

Do foias. Send in the complaints, with photos,or other evidence. If nothing happens send it to the regulatoru bodies and top city lawyer and get them involved. U definitely will get a resolution from the mayor, commissioner, regulatory body.

I used to be stupid and keep ordering from a ward super and 311 for, years. I Don't waste my time doing that anymore. I go to the,top dogs responsible and tell them to hold their feet on the ground responsible. When they won't I report it to a regulatory body.

Water Meter or Not?

Hello All! Just looking for thoughts and or opinions...we are thinking of getting a water meter installed for our 2 flat. We are currently paying $775 every 6 months. We think it's a lot considering there are three people living on first floor and three on second floor. People who have two flats and a water meter, what do you pay? Is a water meter worth it? Thanks for any thoughts and or opinions!

  • Get it as fast as you can...can save you hundreds(!!) of dollars. I wiffled on this but eventually gave in at $600 x twice a year...saving bucks now

  • Joining chorus. Get it. You have to really be a water glutton to go over the non metered rate, which I guess is the whole point.

Aldermanic Debates for the 26th Ward

Curious if there are any debates scheduled for the the Aldermanic race in the 26th Ward prior to the February election. A quick web search did not yield anything useful. Thanks!

  • Kyle eat, drink, run

The Sun-Times also published their first list of Alderman Endorsements this morning (wards 1-10). The first few paragraphs are about lofty standards and idealism and courage to face hard truths about city finances, then they endorsed 6 of 9 incumbents. They do at least have a paragraph of reasoning behind each endorsement...we'll see if the trend of backing incumbents holds up when they get to the 26th.

  • Tonight at EuroFurniture, 2145 W. Grand Ave. at 7 p.m. It is apparently a meet and greet with all 3 candidates answering the same questions. They will not be allowed to question each other.

Dibs Garbage Trucks on The Roll!

I just saw a garbage truck, with two guys hanging off the back, go down Troy St (by North avenue) picking up dibs debris. Great to see!

Thanks to the city for listening and cleaning this mess up! I cannot believe people were still playing the 'dibs card' 14 days after the storm.

I think next snow fall I may ask for donations on EB, to put a dumpster on the corner and clean it out myself after 7 days. I will label it DIBS DEBRIS and note the location so everyone knows where it is located.

What ya think? I am sure I can get 50 angry people on EB to donate $5 :) A 10 cubic yard dump is around $350 with a three day street permit.

Yep. I'm pro-dibs but more than a few days is too long.

Kedzie blocked

Does anyone know what's going on between Wabansia and Bloomingdale, on Kedzie? There are police blocking the street and an ambulance just passed.

  • Hayek Not FDIC Insured | May lose value

Semi serious accident at Kedize/Bloomingdale. Seems a drunk driver came the wrong way down Kedzie from at least Armitage and blasted a northbound SUV. Was on the scene pretty quickly, put out a small fire, and talked to the pinned driver. He did eventually get out and was not seriously injured at least externally. Driver of the NB car was alert and responsive, seemed OK.

Both SUVs obviously totaled. Could have been a lot worse.

Snow removal around Norwegian American Hospital

It's such a shame that Norwegian Hospital is not clearing their sidewalks of snow. This has been a reoccurring problem this year, but I know they have plows and the grounds staff to do it. What's the excuse this time?

I sent an email through their webpage, but I doubt if it'll get any traction. Anyone have a contact there?

  • You'd think that with Hispanic Housing and Bickerdike getting their property for $1 and not paying any property taxes that there would be at least a small budget for maintenance...

  • They can't clean the snow off the sidewalk? Our former alderman, Billy Ocasio, who now works for the hospital and spearheaded the land deal to develop a housing project with current Alderman Maldonado, will fill their pockets With Tax Payer Funds yet can't find the common decency to clear the sidewalks to help people in their ward? What is disgrace.

Vehicles being broken into

Last Saturday on 1/24 and this past Tuesday on 1/27, were broken into. The first was parked in the 1400-1499 N. Kedvale and the second was parked in the 4100-4199 W Hirsch. Both were Toyota vehicles, and both had their windows broken and items stolen.

Just checking to see if anyone else has had this experience recently. If so, let us know. I phoned Alderman Maldonado's office on 1/29 and left the person a voicemail to report this.

Healthcare

Hi, I am a student journalist.

I'm writing a story on healthcare, specifically on how the Affordable Care Act has made the system more efficient or less efficient (for you). Obama has tried to streamline medical documents using technology, such as electronic health records.

So, I'm looking specifically for a patient who HAS had difficulty or has NOT had difficulty with needing medical documents transferred from one hospital (for many reasons) to another hospital.

It this applies to you, I'd love to speak with you and share your story.

If your interview is used, it would be published on a Chicago news website.

Please contact me for more information.

Thank you!

Pics of a Beautiful Hawk In Humboldt Park Today

I think a person noted earlier on EB that this is a Coopers Hawk. It was absolutely magnificent to see this bird fly around the north side of the park. It eventually perched in a tree right next to the Field House. Sorry the pics are phone quality, wish I could have zoomed in with a good lens.

26th ward or 1st ward- confused

Friday evening a middle aged white dude came to my door on Haddon advertising for a ward 1 candidate. He told me I was in ward 1. I was skeptical but listened to him talk about his candidate. I looked it up and I am in fact in 26th ward. What's up with that? Is this guy just an idiot? Or pulling some sort of scam... Not sure what to think. Anyone else talk with him? Here is the 26th ward map.

  • Joe Kopera Logan Square resident since 1961 (54 years in Jan)

You only need the maps if you aren't registered to vote. If you are registered to vote you go to the Board of Election web site link here, put in your Last Name and address information and hit Search. Rat Problems

Has anyone had any success eliminating rats from their yard? Im pretty sure they are nesting near our garden and it's getting a little out of control. I know it's a citywide issue, but I thought I'd check here to see if anyone has some successful home remedies, traps, or baits that worked for them.

  • I think everyone would be happier if we all moved on from this post as I think it is mis-communication....and misunderstanding...I appreciate all the previous posts and I've learned a lot from them all. (Who knew 'slim jim's' were so powerful in the fight against vermin???) I know from experience once we get into 'right fighting' that it continues in different thread.
Rats seem to be a 'heavy topic'...at least they were for me last year when I felt I was 'damned' with them chewing thru 3 layers of bricks and being in my basement, and then in my walls. The 'BOR's (BIG OLD RATS) made a great attempt at ruining my life..and my sleep.
Kate, you do an amazing job and there should be a special place in all our thoughts for people, as you, who do so much good for animals, people, and the community. Bravo!
Please, People, if you continue to post, please ...we are neighbors.
Thanks again for all the information!

If you have a car, make certain you are not parked in a TOW ZONE. Many streets become tow zones when snow accumulations reach two [2] inches or more.

Remember, Chicago has more than 9,300 lane miles of roads to clear every snow storm. They use a fleet of 278 snow plows.

The total lane mileage is the equivalent of traveling from Chicago to Sydney Australia every snow fall - at low speeds, in sometimes blinding conditions.

The first priority for the snow plows is Lake Shore Drive and the arterials. Then the secondary streets are plowed.

Side streets are always plowed LAST.

The City of Chicago is NOT responsible for expressways. That is the responsibility of the State of Illinois.

    Thanks for posting this.

Neighbors, how's the snow situation on your block?

  • What are the snow removal and salting guidelines for apartment building owners with regard to steps and walkways on the back of buildings? Is this the tenants responsibility?
