So, who went to the meeting last night? I did!

In general, after seeing the presentation and the passion, I truly hope that this will turn out as a positive resource for returning veterans and their families. At this point, it seems we can only hope for the best. I did have one small concern about one woman who stood up and commented, telling the audience that she is a social worker and she sees so many single mothers that can't afford to live in the area anymore. At this point, it seems we can only hope for the best. I did have one small concern about one woman who stood up and commented, telling the audience that she is a social worker and she sees so many single mothers that can't afford to live in the area anymore. I hope the general public understand that this will be strictly for veterans and has nothing to do, for the most part, with single mothers or affordable housing for the general public. This is for veterans, which is admirable. My understanding is it will NOT be available for the general public to apply for housing. I hope the general public will understand this. I took notes at the meeting and recorded it, and correct me if I'm wrong, but this is supposed to be 100 percent veteran housing.

Hi Deb - I am one of your neighbors, live off the 55th street point, do a lot of activism regarding crime, garbage, quality of life issues.

I would like to introduce my company's tub and tile restoration services to your Condo Association. We use state of the art equipment and highly trained workers to restore tub and tiles - make them look, function as new for less than 25% of the cost of even low end new tubs and tiles.

Our service is perfect for Condo owners looking to rent or sell - as they need new looking tubs and tiles, new pain jobs, jew appliances etc.

Could I make a presentation to your Condo Association?
We are based in Hyde Park and use local HP/South Side workers.

Maldonado trying to sneak through another deal to strong hold Humboldt Park and take tax dollars.

Four-story building low income housing is getting green-lit in Humboldt Park without community input despite being a proposal that would permanently "change the dynamic of the neighborhood."

I say, take it to MICHIGAN AVE...or one of the UPSCALE neighborhoods who need to take their fair share of lower income people.

Already San Francisco is having too many problems because the rich are displacing everyone.

Chicago is headed the same direction. The only way to STOP insanity is to file civil rights lawsuits.

Who is going to attend the meeting tonight, regarding the proposed veteran's building?

The more people involved, hopefully the more thoroughly all opinions can be taken into account. This means everyone, all ethnicities, all opinions.

  • How does that big of a mistake happen? To overstate costs by 65%? It seems to be a little bit more than a rounding error.

Next, don't assume anything for me. I don't care what gets built as long as it is according to code(ie no zoning changes) and my tax dollars don't have to pay for it.

I think most people have seen the race-baiting show in the media recently and realize that when somebody uses the term "racist" it is because they have already lost the intellectual argument.

The Maldonado take on the Vet Housing

Diversity, generosity is at the heart of proposed Vet housing

  • Is that $42.6 million project to support 49 units? So $800,000+ per unit. If that is, they should see if they could probably construct within current zoning rather than making a fortune in single unit housing.

  • Not an open bidding project. Overpriced development and friends of the Alderman construction company. You can buy land and build 109 single family homes for that price. Ridiculous. And tax exempt which means that all of the taxpaying homeowners will have an increased property tax burden.

Your tax dollars hard at work under Maldonado's watch!

Why build a veterans home 3 blocks from an existing veterans home(at Franklin and Sacramento)?

Why make it part of the contract that you don't have to be a veteran to live here?

Why say it is 4 stories when clearly from the architects renderings it is 5 stories?

Why would it cost $400,000 /unit for basic housing?

Why build it on the property of Norwegian American Hospital (which has been on that site for over 100 years) and then name it something Puerto Rican?

Why are these things always built by the same 3 developers, and always use the same lawyers to pass the "zoning change"?

Why don't the alderman in other wards build subsidized housing for their veterans?

This has become the tried-and-true formulaic way that elected officials in Humboldt and Logan can shift millions of tax dollars to their friends and family.

BTW, as Johnathon Gruber was quoted last week, the ..."voters are too stupid to know the difference". That's why Chicago politicians steal from the taxpayer, not banks and individuals.

Actually in the last year I dont think I have seen or heard people hanging out in the alley at all. Around June of 2013 I got pulled over by multiple cops after briefly driving down the wrong way of Le Moyne to go up the alley to get to my garage, I told the cops I was just accessing my garage to pack up some camping supplies and they pretty much just said OK and that was the end of the stop. I imagine they were staking out the alley for people who come through to buy drugs or something. This may have been the turning point of when the group stopped congregating there all together because as I was saying, over the last year there have maybe only been a couple times if at all that I have seen the group forming there.

The Hispanic Housing Development Corporation together with the Norweigan-American Hospital Inc. has sent in an application for a change in zoning to build a hugh 60 feet high 4 story, 49 unit building in the middle of the neighborhood. If the hospital does this to one of its properties it can do it to other areas as well and the entire neighborhood will be blocked by huge unsightly buildings. This will bring down the property values for every property owner. This company is, also, responsible for other ugly buildings in Humboldt Park.

The property is located at 1045 N Sacramento Avenue, 1049 N Francisco Ave. The building will include 49 affordable dwelling units, tenant ancilliary areas such as recreation areas and library as well as 42 exterior parking spaces. They want to change the zoning from 2 story houses and create this huge complex instead. I see this as a big problem.

The way to fight this rezoning is described in the following websites:

http://www.useful-community-development.org/re-zoning-opposition.html
http://real-estate-law.freeadvice.com/real-estate law/zoning/proposed_rezoning_change.htm

Let's keep this discussion ongoing on this site until this is resolved. Please tell others.

The planning commission called me back and said the planning commission hearing wasn't scheduled yet. He said that homeowners, not renters, would be getting letters from Chico and Nunes P.C. 2 weeks prior to the hearing. Also, there is a notice placed in the Chicago Sun Times two weeks prior to the public hearing, which are the 3rd Thursdays of the month. Basically, my understanding of what I was told was that Norwegian American Hospital land is currently zoned for hospital use to a level of 75 feet and the applicants are looking to change the zoning to include veteran housing (not as high). He said also that if we wanted to contact Chico and Nunes P.C., we should be able to have them send us a copy of their materials. He said also that the building would have no city funding. With regards to it being on the boulevard/maintaining the beauty of the boulevard, he said that since it is not on the boulevard, it wouldn't apply but that that issue would be taken up with the landmarks commission if it did. Not sure I understood everything we spoke about, but that is the gist of it.

  • It is our responsibility to create interest for the problem. I heard that some property owners just tossed the paper in the garbage because they thought it did not involve them. We have to make everybody understand that this involve them.

Why would we put up a veterans home next to a hospital that isn't a veterans hospital?

Why would we name a building with a Puerto Rican name on the NORWEGIAN AMERICAN hospital property?

Why would we not HONOR the over 100 year legacy of Norwegian American hospital by naming it a Norwegian name, or just using Humboldt in the name?

Why would we put up housing on land that Norwegian American Hospital had earmarked for additional hospital facilities?

Oh yeah, so guys that don't even live here anymore (not the vets, the pols) can claim this area as "Puerto Rican" even though the 2000 and 2010 census shows that it is far less than 50% Puerto Rican.

Alternatively, you can find the application by going to the Chicago City Clerks Website: www.chicityclerk.com, then click on the legislation and records tab, filter search by the Intro Date: 10/8/14; and the Current Controlling Legislative Body (Committee on Zoning,Landmarks and Building Standards)

In regards to the public hearing, I initially heard conflicting information from Alderman Maldonado's office and the Department of Planning and Development. My current understanding is that the hearing was scheduled for committee on Zoning for November 13, 2014 at 10am. Because this is a planned development (PD 599) it must first be approved/recommended by the Planning Commission before it can be heard by Committee on Zoning. Once approved by the Planning Commission, it would likely pass zoning.

The hearings for the Planning Commission happen on the THIRD Thursday of the month at 10am in council chambers at City Hall. The Department of Planning and Development and the Clerk's website do not show it on a November Agenda. I heard second hand that the Hispanic Housing Development Corporation would likely try to get it on the December Agenda.

I'd also like to say that both Alderman Maldonato's office and the Department of Planning and Development were very responsive and helpful in clarifying the process.

Turkey V

Has anyone seen what appears to be a turkey vulture circling around California and Augusta?
I noticed it appear after a kid fell off his bike and skinned his knee. Smelling blood, the turkey-v swooped down at the boy. Thankfully the boy's brother was there with a baseball bat and took a few whacks at his beak.
I'm worried about one of the neighborhood kids being carried away and snacked upon. Please be alert guys.

  • I used to live by an enormous group of turkey vultures. It freaked me out how they would fly in circles, like in the cartoons. Then I learned that is just their social flight. They aren't so much looking for something to die as they are leaving their nest and landing again, in a certain order, to establish their order and dominance.

Are there really turkey vultures living in the city? The ones I've seen come in 6-foot wing spans!!!

  • Speaking of turkeys... The Smoke Daddy is smoking a whole bunch of them for Thanksgiving! Order yours today...and maybe you should also order one for the vultures as a peace offering. #buyaturkeysavealife
