CPS students can earn community service hours for participation with the Neighborhood Connection Project Winter Prep and Clean Up

One hour of your time is kindly requested on Saturday, October 4 between 10am-12pm to help get the bricolage underpass mural ready for winter and cleaned up. We'll be raking, watering, planting, cleaning, mowing (and other things that end in "ing") our shared underpass and public space. Your help is needed to get this done. For more information on this fun way to improve your neighborhood, contact Kristin Ciarrachi (longtime Edgebrook resident) at kciarrachi@parkcommunitychurch.org.

For this effort, the Neighborhood Connection Project (NCP) is pleased to partner with yet another community institution, Park Community Church (located on Touhy Avenue across from Target).

For more information about the Neighborhood Connection Project, check us out on Facebook or contact Jac Charlier at jac.charlier@gmail.com or Gina Metelica at gina.metelica@gmail.com

As part of its vision to renew Chicago, Park Community seeks to build the goodness and greatness of the city we all love. As we continue to partner with community leaders, organizations and neighbors we seek to make a positive lasting difference throughout Chicago.

About NCP: Started in Spring of 2010, the Neighborhood Connection Project (NCP) is a citizen-led initiative to build community by repairing and beautifying the Metra railroad underpass located at Kinzua, Hiawatha and Lehigh. We were joined by our ongoing partners, Green Star Movement (GSM) and After School Matters (ASM). Phase I underpass beautification efforts were ready to begin and indeed started finally in Spring 2013. GSM worked with ASM's teen interns and our local artists and community volunteers to produce the mural on the East side of the underpass, which was completed in Summer 2013. We completed Phase II when the West wall work was completed in August 2014. During summer 2015 we will finish the project.

Trash Marketing

Does anyone else find it annoying when local businesses leave their cards, menus and door hangers on your property? Beyond irritating, I find it amounts to littering which is as rude as the people who discard an empty pint bottle on the parkway.

Does anyone else find it annoying when local businesses leave their cards, menus and door hangers on your property? Beyond irritating, I find it amounts to littering which is as rude as the people who discard an empty pint bottle on the parkway.

When growing up, I would occasionally see the 'No Solicitation' stickers in people's windows. Honestly, as a kid, I always thought those people must not be very nice but now I want one to keep away the trash marketing. Does anyone use this today? Any other ideas for letting these people know, thanks but no thanks?

I usually don't mind the kid selling candy bars because I like to support the neighborhood and there is an agreed upon transaction taking place but if I want food delivery or need new windows, there are other options I would pursue before calling someone who stuck a business card into a crevice on the front porch.

In the last few weeks, I received trash from a concrete guy to food places - you all know who you are and you'll never earn my business with these tactics.

Thanks!

  • A couple of months ago, I placed a No Solicitation label on our mailbox & it works! We don't receive any fliers or anything that isn't addressed to us except for the grocery advertisements. And we don't have bold strangers ringing our doorbell any longer either, bonus :)

I dont mind it its advertisement it doesnt hurt anyone in my opinion there are far greater things to complain about

Everyblock vs Nextdoor in Mayfair

I have my favorite but would like to hear what peeps up in Mayfair think.

If you could only use one, which would you choose? ...and why? Which do you find to be more informative, to have better features, community outreach, support etc? ...or is there another social neighborhood network you prefer to use? ie Facebook, Yahoo Groups, Foursquare

To help compare, i put together a chart:
http://w11.zetaboards.com/InsideNextdoor/topic/10057749/2/#new

For those who are not familiar with ND, but curious, here's an invite link:
https://nextdoor.com/invite/uncptzzbfxscgxxppmuw

  • I think nextdoor provides better for very neighborhood focused discussions and information. There is just too much to sift through on Everyblock.

attempted break in

Yesterday in the 4600 block of Kostner: a man tried to gain access to a house - first at the back door, then the basement door. He was chased away by a dog. Neighbors were wondering if the man was wearing a ComED jacket and pretending to read the meters.
Anyone hear of something similar?

  • Toddd North Mayfair resident

ComEd was reading meters yesterday in the area.

  • Raad Soon to be Mayfair Park Homeowner

@Toddd is correct. My dog and I were on my deck yesterday when he began barking loudly at someone approaching our house from the side yard. It turned out to be a ComEd worker. Not sure why they would try to gain access into the house though as my electrical meter is located at the exterior of the house.

  • sb, mayfair Mayfair

Can you describe the Comed worker you saw?

Anybody else get a call from a phoney roofer?

This afternoon I got a call from "Roger", who claimed to be from Total Construction Services, offering me a free roofing estimate and asking if I would be home tomorrow from 11 to 7pm. This afternoon I got a call from "Roger", who claimed to be from Total Construction Services, offering me a free roofing estimate and asking if I would be home tomorrow from 11 to 7pm. I almost said no, but then I caught myself and made it clear that there would be people at home. The guy knew my first name, the street where I lived, and my home phone, which really disturbed me. I called back the number on my caller ID and it was not in service. I also googled the company and found that there isn't one in Chicago, so I reported the call at the 17th precinct station and asked them to patrol my area (4800 block of Tripp). Really hope this doesn't mean my house is being cased for a break-in. Anyone else have an experience like this? Any advice?

  • I would have told him that he's about a week late because you just got a new roof last week even if you didn't. I would have also told him that my two pit bulls are always home to welcome strangers even if you don't have any dogs.

Sears won't survive past 2016?

Here is an excerpt from yesterday's article in Crain's Chicago

Fitch Ratings today downgraded Sears Holdings Corp.'s credit rating to CC from CCC, a move driven by the retailer's continuing decline in profitability and the rate at which it's burning through cash. The agency warned that Sears may not have enough funding to support operations beyond 2016.

If Sears goes down, what will happen to Six Corners? I don't love the big ugly building and rarely shop at Sears, but it'll be exponentially worse if the store closes.

  • Lucas Museum Annex!

  • pattymelt is mostly in charge

We could preserve the Sears as it is and charge money to enter the time capsule.
