39th Ward Alderman Debate?

Finally there's competition for the job. Anyone know if there's a debate in the works?

  • Robert Murphy, thank you for the offer to discuss your vision, it is appreciated.

  • Just a suggestion to anyone who may be involved in the planning of the debate. I think it would be helpful to those residents not able to attend the debate if a webcast, video and/or transcript is made available. Thanks for organizing this! Looking forward to it.

Speed Limit Cameras on Foster

How can we volunteer to have Foster Avenue, between Elston and Kimball, set as the first area to test the speed-limit cameras?

This section of Foster is clearly posted as a 30 MPH zone, yet because of the large area of parks and little parking there is a very large amount of speeding down this street. It's a real threat to pedestrians, senior citizens, children, bicyclists, and other using the public streets.

This would be a good place to test the system. Speed limit signs are clearly posted along the route and new signs wouldn't even be needed.

  • Albany Parker Jane Addams Community Health and Urban Development

Ok so we all know about the graft for the well connected and the claims that this all has been "For the children" and the ridiculous light timings that could not be explained Well the facts are in and the cameras do not improve safety. They are all about the money. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/watchdog/redlight/ct-red-light-camera-safety-met-20141219-story.html#page=1 FIVE HUNDRED MILLION in fines! How many lives has that affected?

  • Bob Kastigar 15 Years North Park, bike rider, retired

The Tribune and Redlight stories are misleading.

They note that the number of T-Bone accidents have been reduced (which is good) but then go on to complain that the number of rear-end accidents have increased.

Rear-end accidents occur because of drivers driving to fast and following to closely, not because of the Red-Light cameras.

Slow down, keep your distance, and drive safely. Quit looking for someone else to blame.

Candidates for 39th Ward Alderman

I've been studying the 39th Ward candidates for alderman, and while I am still undecided since anything can happen between now and the election, I have been impressed by Robert Murphy. He seems to have a handle on the issues of the Ward and appears very passionate. I am still open to hearing more from Joe Laiacona and Mary Hunter.

If you're interested in knowing - Murphy, Laiacona's and Hunter all have Facebook pages, and Murphy and Laiacona have twitter...

If you're interested in knowing - Murphy, Laiacona's and Hunter all have Facebook pages, and Murphy and Laiacona have twitter too. I tried to find a FB page or twitter for Alderman Laurino but I don't think she has either.

If anyone has any thoughts on any of the candidates, I would like to hear any views. You can also private message me if you like.

  • Susan, OId Irving Anna commented in another thread:

"Several community associations are discussing co-sponsoring a debate. Effort is being spearheaded by the Hollywood Park--North Park group. Location would be Northside College Prep auditorium. No firm details yet."

    I look forward to attending,

From reading Kathleen's comment, it confirms that some areas of the 39th Ward receives better treatment than other sections. My area seems to be one of the forgotten areas.

Finch's Plans Massive Brewery, Taproom on Chicago River

The young beer company opened its original, and current, location at 4565 N. Elston Ave. in June 2011 and has been quickly growing ever since.

  • It is sad that they chose to go to Lincoln Park rather than stay in the neighborhood.

  • Agreed, really wish they found a way to stay local. Oh well, as long as they keep canning Hardcore Chimera I'll still support them.

Greetings Neighbors! The FAiR Coalition invites you to meet the Chicago Mayoral Candidates on Wednesday, Dec 3. The meeting is open to FAiR members and those interested in finding solutions to the massive increase in planes, noise and pollution at O'Hare and Midway. Remember the changes at both airports were done without any real community input.

The next FAiR general meeting is on Wednesday, 12/3 from 7-9pm at the VFW Hall at 10 W. Higgins in Park Ridge. Please RSVP/let us know if you are coming to info@fairchicago.org or via the FAiR Website www.fairchicago.org using the "Contact Us" link.

As part of the meeting, you will have a chance to meet in person, hear from and ask questions of several of the Chicago Mayoral candidates. Confirmed to be there so far are Commissioner Jesus "Chuy" Garcia and Alderman Bob Fioretti. All Mayoral candidates including Mayor Emanuel have been invited. This will be the 11th request sent to Mayor Emanuel to meet with FAiR. He has ignored, dismissed and not responded to the previous 10 requests.

For all FAiR members whether you live in Chicago or you live outside of Chicago, it is no overstatement to say that this next FAiR meeting is the single most important gathering we have had and one that you must attend. Why?

Simply, the solutions FAiR seeks fly right through the Mayor's office. The Chicago Mayor owns and controls the airports serving the entire region, O'Hare and Midway, and the Mayor is the last and only missing piece at the table FAiR has created. With the right Mayor or the current Mayor doing the right thing, the success we seek is well within our reach. You can see why it is critical you attend.

One final item, FAiR does not endorse candidates for elected office. We present candidates to the membership to decide who is most closely aligned with solutions to the massive increase in planes, noise and pollution we are all experiencing.

  • Hello Jac,

Any chance of getting a follow up report of the meeting for those whose old bones don't like getting out in this cold weather?

    Dennis

  • pattymelt is mostly in charge

@Dennis: If you think the issue is important, you really should try to attend. If the turnout is poor, the candidates will think most people in the neighborhood do not think the airplane noise is a big deal.

The Outside the Loop radio show continues to rapidly grow in popularity having been picked up by WGN after building a large following of listeners. Congrats to Mike and Andy at Outside the Loop for their success.

Thanks for sharing the FAiR story, which is the story of tens of thousands of citizens whose lives have been adversely impacted by the October 2013 changes to the O'Hare runway takeoff and landing patterns and the February 2014 changes to Midway flight patterns. These changes were made without any real community input.
Outside the Loop is doing yeoman's work on getting out information about truly local Chicago stories. Thanks Outside the Loop.

ELSTON AVE CTA BUS SERVICE - Let's get it back!

Call your local alderman's office! Request that they attend the meeting being held by the 33rd ward's Transportation Action Committee at Ald. Deb Mell's office January 22, 2015 7:00-8:00p 3649 N. Kedzie Ave. (Addison/Kedzie). Reinstating discontinued bus service on Elston is more important that ever. Let's get our alderman's to put it back on CTA's agenda. Remember in the 1980s when Elston was an industrial corridor? Well, that is no more! We have commercial businesses and residents that can benefit from this bus route, especially the kids during school hours. We have Charter and Magnet schools all over the city. Let's help get our kids to school! Please spread the word and let's make it happen!

  • Well, once again what began as a simple discussion has dissolved into trading insults. If anyone cares to begin a petition to submit to the powers that be at the CTA, please let me know. I will be very happy to sign. Short of that, I'm opting out of this thread.
