Candidates for 39th Ward Alderman

I've been studying the 39th Ward candidates for alderman, and while I am still undecided since anything can happen between now and the election, I have been impressed by Robert Murphy. He seems to have a handle on the issues of the Ward and appears very passionate. I am still open to hearing more from Joe Laiacona and Mary Hunter.

If you're interested in knowing - Murphy, Laiacona's and Hunter all have Facebook pages, and Murphy and Laiacona have twitter too. I tried to find a FB page or twitter for Alderman Laurino but I don't think she has either.

If anyone has any thoughts on any of the candidates, I would like to hear any views. You can also private message me if you like.

  • Was not a fan of Laurino until I went to a recent candidates forum sponsored by Indian Woods Association. The two challengers were not well prepared. I will try to sum up both.

Laiacona seems like a nice guy but the 70's must have been good. He is retired and seems to be bored so decided to run for alderman.....again. Not a lot of substance to his answers.

Murphy was very aggressive and not nice. He rarely answered the questions that were asked by the forum speaker. He kept trying to attack Laurino on issues that did not pertain to her since certain part of the ward just became hers. Murphy talks a big game full of promises but he neglects to tell you how he is going to pay for these things. He is for transparency in the Alderman's office which is good, but if you hold public forums on every single ward issue nothing will ever get done. It kind of defeats why you elect people. Some background on Murphy is he is an unemployed architect whose most recent claim was president of a community club in Forest Glen. He is also a member of FAIR (which is a great thing). His campaign material claims he is a founding member....which we found to be not true.

Laurino did what a typical politician does she answered the questions in a politically correct manner and did not attack either of her challengers....and she had ample opportunity. She was like your aunt on how she addressed items. She touted her own accomplishments even though they probably would have happened anyway. Did not give a lot on future vision for the ward.

Given that she is my current alderman I will probably vote for her again. Better the devil you know and since Rahm will probably be elected again it is good to have some who gets along with the Mayor. Laiacona is a nice guy but without a platform or the money to challenge Laurino. Murphy came off as a bully and know it all. He seems to care a lot about the ward but does not have the people skills to succeed as an alderman.

Did not attend as I am no longer in the 39th, but have years of experience dealing with Laurino. If she is reelect her family will have held that seat for 50 years. Her father resigned in 1995, shortly after that he was indicted on federal charges in a ghost payroll scheme, routinely doling out jobs to dozens of political cronies, friends & relatives. Of course, just like w the Mell dynasty, the Mayor appointed Anthony Laurino's daughter (Margie) to take his place. Nepotism sucks, she's "entitled," family business. I'd ask questions about the use of TIF funds, her support for neighborhood schools, responding to ideas and wishes coming from ward residents and rubber stamping the mayor's wishes; she always has and that's how we got the parking meter deal and other equally bad ideas since RAHM came into office. Just like her dad, she helps her friends. God help those citizens that see a need and ask for her help, even those that collect lots of signatures. We get the government we settle for/work for, thus deserve. I'll feel bad for all of us if Marge is reflected, even though I'm no longer in her ward. I endorse Joe Laiacona I know little to nothing about the other candidate. Please forgive any typos.

39th Ward Alderman Debate?

Finally there's competition for the job. Anyone know if there's a debate in the works?

  • Robert Murphy local booster, active neighbor

Also, I don't know about Ald. Laurino's scheduling, but the invite for the forum went out to all candidates on Dec 13, so not really last minutes

  • Did anyone participate in Laurino's town hall meeting last night via phone? I learned about it last night after the fact. I didn't see it listed on the ward website and I didn't receive any email notice so I wasn't home to take the call. Did anyone participate? And did anyone receive advance notice?

Dr. Martin Luther King - "I Have A Dream" Speech

Every year on Martin Luther King Day I read with my family Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech. Last year I shared this practice with others (using social media) and got a huge response. This year, I do the same. The speech is copied partially below (EB has character limitations!). You can then click on the link to read the full text and listen to it (also available on YouTube). If interested, I would suggest you read "Letters from Birmingham Jail" too.

So, read, reflect, discuss and then actively work towards our nation's continued need to achieve racial justice.

I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.

But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. And so we've come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.

I can't find the pictures I took, but several years ago I rode a bicycle between Selma and Montgomery, just to take a slow ride along the route.

The Edmund Pattus bridge hasn't changed, but Rt 80 today is a four-lane mostly divided highway. Back then it was a two-lane highway. There are signs posted where the two camping spots were located. The land is still empty, but they're just vacant land, not campgrounds.

There isn't anything noteworthy in Selma. It's like any other small town. Local restaurants, but McDonalds and Burger Kings too. I didn't see anything noteworthy about the march.

Someplace near Montgomery I got chased off the highway by a state trooper. He told me since it was a federal highway bicycles weren't allowed. I tried to point out to him that this wasn't a restricted highway, there were no sign postings and that bicycles were allowed. He offered to take me into jail and let a judge decide the next day. I declined, even though I knew if MLK has been with me, he wouldn't have given up so easily. I got off the highway (he followed me until I did), camped and the next day returned to the highway several miles down the road. Several other state police passed me but didn't stop.

I got done what I wanted to get done, but Rt. 80 isn't really the most pleasant place to ride a bicycle.

i have a pet peeve before consuming something before you buy it at a retail store , to me it is just wrong. i can see if it were a life or death situation, but these people that just start opening stuff they have not paid for and start eating it or the people that just open up a water and just start drinking it in line. really? maybe it's just how i was brought up.

or those people that open up a package to check it out and just leave it to the side all opened, then either proceed to not buy it or buy another one.

if i were the clerk i would have held onto the ticket until the guy came back to pay for his purchase and if the guy wanted to call the cops for holding onto the ticket, fine, i would tell the cop that he intended to pay for the item with the ticket and since i can't cash out or verify the ticket at this time, i will hold it until payment is made, if he intends not for the ticket to be held in lieu of payment, i would charge the guy with shoplifting the item not paid for.

In home pet sitter recommendations

My family is in need of a in-home pet care sitter and dog walker in the Albany Park (60625) area. We are looking for a reliable person to house sit, pet sit overnight and walk our dogs. Must be licensed and insured.
Being knowledgeable of pet diabetic/shots would be a plus.
