Don't get me wrong it would be nice, but it will be years before it will happen. Until then we need to focus our energy on getting rid of gangs, prostitutes, and other criminal types. We need to reach out to make stronger families to make stronger neighborhoods.

  • It would be nice to have a Whole Foods in the area. Pete's Market is great, but they do not offer any or much in organic foods. I usually go to the Pete's Market in Oak Brook for organic, or take my chances at Trader Joe's in LaGrange and at our neighborhood Jewel. I would spend the money at Whole Foods in our neighborhood, and it would also make the neighborhood a bit more appealing. And I agree, we need to make our neighborhood stronger as well.

Traffic 47th & Keeler

Hello, the traffic in the morning is crazy. Crossing 47th street down Keeler is merely impossible. There is a sign that clearly reads " do not block intersection", but nobody seems to care. Is takes me 15 minutes to cross 47th street because nobody wants to let me through. Mind you, I don't like to be an aggressive driver. I think having stop signs on the intersection of 47th and Keeler can help, or at least traffic patrol. Who can I suggest this to? Thank you.

  • Increase in traffic is probably due to people avoiding the nightmare that is NB Pulaski between Archer and the expressway. Between the traffic lights and speed cameras it's just awful. It's a 30 minute trip just to get to the highway from 63rd and that's on a good day. Not...

Increase in traffic is probably due to people avoiding the nightmare that is NB Pulaski between Archer and the expressway. Between the traffic lights and speed cameras it's just awful. It's a 30 minute trip just to get to the highway from 63rd and that's on a good day. Not to mention the cowboys who think the lane closest to the sidewalk is their personal express lane. So hello adjacent streets. I don't know that extra signage will help but leaving a few minutes earlier or later (like 30-40 either way) usually clears out the school traffic and the trucks so it's a little easier.
But yes, I do agree it is HORRIBLE!

  • I have posted before about this..it's the worst ever..I blame the school though because now that they are out - my drive has been a lot smoother..who can we complain to?? They need a better (drop off) system..they do have "traffic people" out there directing but they allow the drivers to use both lanes to turn (L/R) causing everyone else behind them who is trying to go straight to be stuck..its soooo bad that a 10 minute drive for me to work more than triples.

TAMALE LADY

there has been a lady selling tamales on 47th and keating, is there a way to stop this?
do we really want 47th to become 26th st?

  • Tamale ladies sell quick easy food to people who need a quick breakfast or snack. They wake up at unGodly hours to make them by hand.
Then there are hookers, spreading disease and tearing families apart. Bringing the criminal element around that much more.
    Pick your battles.

Vanny79 is correct in saying you fix a problem before it escalates into something else. Her original post was about food cart vendors, so let’s not cloud the issue with the prostitute problem.

And for the bleeding hearts who suggest that these food cart vendors are making a living for themselves - have any of you actually happened upon a food cart vendor relieving themself in an alley and then promptly going back to their food cart to sell? Until you encounter that, you don’t know what you’re talking about.

And don’t forget, food cart vendors take business away from legitimate brick & mortar restaurants who pay taxes, buy licenses, hire people from the community to work for them and are periodically inspected by the Health Department. Every Block posts pass/fail inspections of all restaurants in the area. When restaurants can’t make it, they go under, and surprise – another vacant store.

If anybody wants a tamale or quick bite of food, there are any number of mom & pop walk in restaurants in Archer Heights that serve quality food, have quick carry-out service and would welcome your business.

These mom & pop restaurants are the same people who many times live in the neighborhood and donate to charity events run by schools, churches, the Cub/Boy Scouts, civic groups and other organizations. Show me a food cart vendor who does that.

Ricardo, I suggested this before. Build a bicycle path along the Sanitary & Ship Canal between Harlem and Halsted and watch a significant of traffic along 47th decrease as commuters take the bicycle path instead. It happens with the lake front path and the path in Skokie.

Also, much of the traffic on 47th I suspect is people avoiding the train grade crossing on Archer & Knox (but I like prefer grade crossings over a massive dump of concrete like on North Ave in the West suburbs) AND traffic trying to get up and over the Stevenson I55 Expressway. It would be ideal, yes a wide span, to have several overpasses from From Forest View, Stickney, Cicero, to 47th without any ramps to/from the Stevenson - like along the Eisenhower Expy in Berwyn. Yes outside the 12th, but it would significantly positively impact the quality of life along the SW-side including your ward.

the world, affects the nation, the states, the cities, the communities, the neighborhoods, the families, the individuals....YOU and ME. Thus I address this topic up for consideration:

I can't say I was depressed, but I was seriously disappointed, and disheartened, not only to learn Rauner ($40 million-and-counting-a-year, Rauner) won the IL governorship, but that the DEM party was turned topsy-turvy on its head, and that the REPS virtually 'hijacked' our government as a democratic republic!

Definitely, I was suspicious of Rauner's win being rammed through so fast (I truly am not a fan of either party, but prefer Dems any day, to what Reps offer, esp. THIS MAN who is going to be our state nightmare-- starting with his promise to push through that Keystone Pipeline, along with all his Rep cronies now in office.

But, how to wade through all the information and disinformation, all the months of campaigning, etc. to trace where it all took this disastrous turn? Well, fortunately, another person has looked into it, and here, I post a link to an article a friend sent me just yesterday, I couldn't have researched and stated things better by this fellow, so here is a link to his full article (and well worth reading):

Tagging at Edwards

I work at Richard Edwards Elementary. We are having an issue with tagging at our school. In particular, an individual keeps writing "Sonic" along with gang symbols on our building at 4815 S. Karlov. We are calling graffiti-busters ASAP and painting or cleaning off what we can immediately. I thought Everyblock might just be another way to reach out to the community for ideas on how to help prevent this or catch the offenders. You are welcome to PM me if you like. I really enjoy working in this community and the people seem to really care about their neighborhood's appearance. We would like to stop this from happening at our school.

Thanks!

I have been reporting graffiti/gang tagging for years and then observing when it is covered over. Except for a few longer delays (when Rahm the Bomb made the stupid decision to rework---read...slow down-- city graffiti removal), MOST of the tagging I reported got tended to rather quickly and most of the time was re-covered again and again. So, now that you're aware of what to do AH Teacher, keep on it, and thanks
for caring and helping to clean up this neighborhood....

Now, that we have the AHCA attention in this topic, are you aware that the 'art' that
is painted on the wall behind the mechanic's shop on 51st street (between Keeler and Tripp) attracts gang-bangers that often hang out and watch the 'Artiste" paint that junk
    on the wall?

I've personally witnessed 'gangsters' drive up (you can't miss 'em) in decked out cars
to talk to this guy. And so much of the junk he paints on this wall-- if studied closely--
appears to be racial, gangstuh jargon, images and gang names subltly woven into
    the 'art'.

If the AHCA is SO concerned about gangs, tagging, neighborhood crime, etc., then THEY need to monitor this wall (the best thing would be to get the owner to stop having this wall 'tagged' like this). We don't need such junk-- passing as 'art'-- that'll be the day-- it's ridiculous and attracts more criminal elements into Archer Heights.

  • IMHO ... Tagging is a symptom of the problem. Can't cure diseases with Tylenol. Report gang activity to 911. Attend CAPS meetings. Organize your neighbors.
