Since last fall, I became outwardly concerned with the state of Irving Park Rd near my home. Our Illinois Route 19 acts much like highway, between Harlem Ave. and Cumberland Ave. There are two cemeteries on each side of it, which are Acacia Park Cemetery and Irving Park Cemetery. Cars ZOOM BY with little concern for the pedestrians and bikers. Anyone who would pull a traffic report would note that deadly accidents and bumper to bumper accidents are not a stranger here! Two of my neighbors were KILLED over the past two years, one on a bike and one in the car. This year, someone just DROVE THROUGH the rusted-out fence into Irving Park Cemetery. Often KIDS on bikes, MOTHERS with strollers and ELDERLY with their shopping carts either struggle through the gravel and mud filled paths, where used to be once concrete sidewalks on "both" sides of the road, or they maneuver their equipment into the street. These both northern and southern sidewalks used to be functional until they were abandoned in the late 1960's or so. If anyone would talk to the CROSSING guard by N. Pioneer Ave, ours is Kristen, would learn of the frequent dangers of crossing the street. She will be back in the fall when the school restarts and would appreciate having traffic lights installed, too. The requests to fix these sidewalks have bounced around various public offices with mixed results. I PLEA with all concerned citizens to assist me with getting this overdue safety issue resolved by contacting all politicians overseeing or soon-to-be overseeing this area. Hearing from the community-at-large vs. one neighborhood mother is far more impactful I am told. Thank you!!!

Please e-mail your support for the sidewalks to:

Representative Martwick at repmartwick@gmail.com;

My family reflects this working class Neighborhood ,two of them are police officers, three of us are members of the Military, my wife is a bank teller, two of sons go to college and work part time, I will never be rich nor do I want to, I work for the City Of Chicago Dept, of Water management I'm a member plumber's local 130, We maintain the water system in the city, we work outside 24/7, I'm one of those people who get the call at 2 o'clock in the morning when it's 20 below zero to fix a broken water main, the work can be hard and dangerous but it pays good, but the pride I get from working with my fellow city workers is what it's all about!

And one other thing polonia it isn't wise to tell people how to deal with their children, maybe as I said before, you should wait before replying with advice pertaining to a situation that you seem to have confused with something else. No where on here have I said that I was having a hard time finding a place or that I was having money troubles so...... Still wondering what you're talking about.

Looking for someone to sand and finish my floors.

Hello,
I was wondering if someone can give me some suggestions on a company to sand my floors.
My house is 106 yrs old and this is never been done. It really needs it !!!
Thank you, I appreciate any help and suggestions I will receive.

  • Zudor Flooring. Did my old house and everyone thinks I put in new floors. Highly recommend and the price was right.

  • What is a ballpark figure on the cost to sand/refinish a basic 2 story home? I need to start budgeting so I can get our floors redone in the next few months.

Our house is 102 years old and the floors are in terrible condition. Do you have to move out while the work is being done? We have a lot of pets and no family in the area, so I'm concerned about how long the process takes.

  • Edward's Flooring did ours. They were fantastic. The floors were perfect and not a speck of dust when they were done. It cost us $1600 for 480 sq feet (3 bedrooms and the upstairs hall) plus the staircase. It took them 3 days. We had no furniture in the house since we had just closed so I don't know how they handle that.

Lost cat

Found a black and white cat with a bobbed tail in the alley (where the community garden is) behind the condemned house on the 4200 block of Addison. Seems very friendly and housebroken and scared, not feral. Followed me back to my apartment. Didn't let it in, have 3 cats already.

  • There are "lost cat" signs posted on the trees along the east side of Keeler with a contact phone number. Unfortunately I'm not in the area to get the phone number for you.

Best Extracurricular Activities for Kids

We have found a local gem at our local park in Dunning Neighborhood, which is Culture and Arts--Woodworking Class. We highly recommend the offering to all, ages 6 and up. Teacher Joe has 20+ yrs. of working with wood and children. Recently, the projects included little race cars and bird homes. The process includes drawing the model, cutting the wood, putting it all together and painting. It is a practical hands-on learning for anyone.

Do you know of any other nearby quality children programs that should be considered?

  • Art Enrichment for both the Young and the Old at Brickton Art Center, Park Ridge

We love Brickton Art Center and faithfully attend their classes for several years now. They have amazing people and provide amazing results. Try them out and you will not look anywhere else for arts. http://www.bricktonartcenter.org/

  • Spanish Preschool (2.5 to 5-yrs-old) at Des Plaines Park District

If you are looking for a fun affordable Saturday morning Spanish Preschool, 2.5 hrs/day, I highly recommend the Des Plaines Park District Program. Seniora Meza puts a lot of effort to create a warm, colorful, entertaining and educational program. Each class has its own theme and the art projects are noteworthy. Gunfire in Kilbourn Park Area

Last night at 4:50am, there was gunfire in my alley right behind my building at Kildare and Roscoe. I heard the 4 "cracks" and then the bullets ricochet and zing past my open bedroom window. The car then sped off, hitting garbage cans in the alley. I called the police this morning (since no one showed up last night/this morning) and filed a report over the phone. I was told units will be doing extra patrols of the area. That was seriously a scary scenario and a first in 4 years of living in this neighborhood. Hoping it's an isolated incident. :/

I felt compelled to respond to your last comment.

Capitalism is about getting more for less; efficiency; investing profits into capital goods to create more of the same. If you have a better system in mind, I'd be curious to hear what it is. (I'm assuming that you enjoy efficiency, better products, better customer service, and getting more for your hard-earned money. Perhaps I'm wrong.) Perhaps you're confusing capitalism with consumerism. Perhaps there's another "-ism" you prefer.

The NRA, while not perfect and sometimes cringe-inducing, is dedicated to protecting a constitutional right. Whether you choose to exercise that right or not is a personal decision. Vilify the NRA if you wish, but recognize that the organization is not dedicated to taking something from you.

Finally, to lump the above two into the same sentence as some colorfully-named street gang is, in my opinion, silly. Maybe you were being flip, or maybe you really believe they are all the same, using logic such as:

"IF not magic and rainbows, THEN EVIL."

Sockmule: We should have this conversation elsewhere, because it's about ideology and politics. Capitalism is fine by me, but you can't expect it to provide for all public needs, which is why we need a government with social programs that don't have to be competitive or produce a profit, as well as to rein in the excesses of laissez faire capitalism. The Constitution is not the divine word of God and the Second Amendment was written in an historical context that doesn't exist today. The NRA took a wrong turn in the '70's when it decided to change from being an organization for recreational shooters to a lobbying body with an incredibly myopic agenda. And the lumping of a fictitious street gang with the NRA and capitalism only meant that gangs share an affinity for free markets and for promoting access to whatever firepower they can get. My apologies to all the EveryBlock folks who stick to practical and friendly conversation and avoid this sort of partisan ranting. I'll move down the street next time.

Dunning Read Conservation Area Advisory Council is Forming

Just learned about this opportunity to serve the community. See the link below. It sounds like a fine opportunity for the nature supporters, educators and parents to create, shape and/or influence the nature programming for their children and others in our "own" backyard. Is anyone thinking of joining in?

Plans for Divvy Stations Near Six Corners Dropped

...Six Corners and the Blue Line along Irving Park Road; and at Schurz High School, 3601 N. Milwaukee Ave., across the street from where Chicago artist Nick Cave, the head of the fashion program...

This article has 3 other Chicago locations (Show)

Business owners in the Six Corners Shopping District said the lack of the now-ubiquitous sky-blue Divvy bikes near Irving Park Road and Cicero and Milwaukee avenues would deal a "setback" to their effort to bring new life to the once-thriving area by making it more bike-friendly.

Part of that effort includes an online fundraising campaign to raise $10,000 for three bike corrals that would provide parking spaces for 36 bicycles at 4018 N. Cicero Ave., 4015 N. Milwaukee Ave. and a to-be-determined location on Irving Park.

Overflowing garbage in Old Irving Park

Help! We're moving to OIP and took possession of our house a couple of weeks ago. The previous owners left both garbage cans FULL, and we took them out to the end of our driveway for the city to empty them, but so far, nothing has happened. We live in Northcenter now, and our garbage is picked up every week. We were told that our OIP garbage would be picked up yesterday, but no luck. So, we have no place to put our garbage, AGAIN. Could someone please tell me what the routine is out there? THANKS!!

  • Kristine Cloud 30 year resident of North Center

Thank You, Alderman! I went online on the 311 site and requested a pickup, but if we don't get one soon I'll surely let you know.

  • Kathleen Boyle Your dog's best friend! (Taking real estate break)

Please do call Alderman Arena's office. Whenever people have an unusually large amount of trash piling up or an unusually large item, the city can send a truck out for a special pick-up!
