Upcoming Schurz meeting Oct 8

http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20140930/irving-park/schurz-field-meeting-set-im-hopeful-that-theyll-listen-principal-says

The principal hopes the neighbors will listen. We might have listened a long time ago had anyone bothered to tell us! All that secrecy is what blew up. And oddly, there was not one mention of Bob Tucker Sr (their proposal writing champion) whose foundation Urban Schools Foundation shares his son's athletic marketing business CDI.

If it walks like a duck ... just sayin

I graduated Schurz, grew up in Logan Square (on the boulevard) but came here, to be with my friends every weekend and now I live here. But my friends families have been here more than sixty years.

I hate when they emotionally blackmail us, it bothers me. It's for Schurz Athletes, when it's not. If it were, then it would only be used by those students. I'm not sure what's in this for Alderman Arena other than a whole lot of folks aren't voting for him. But the principal is looking out for his job by trying to attract more students to his school. Tucker is starting a nonprofit and I'm not sure how that works but he wouldn't do it if he wasn't getting paid. I know you rent space from the park district. I imagine it's around $100 an hour, can they play on both fields at the same time? The baseball and soccer/football? Then it's $200 an hour. The community is looking at this as such a great thing, do they know they'll have to rent that space, get in line or do they think they can just mosey on over and use it any time? These are questions that need answering.

Also, they didn't like Tucker in Logan Square flashing his money around, going behind the communities backs and appeasing children with soccer. He's buying kids then trying to make them feel guilty because they don't want his kind in their neighborhood. It was loss of jobs, no parking for residents, a nightmare with traffic and crowds or Tucker's soccer. Not to mention, there weren't many people into soccer that made an indoor arena necessary.

OK so that's two votes against. We get it.

Hanson Stadium Renovation instead of a private field for Schurz

I have been attending football games at Hanson Stadium (fullerton/Central) since 1980. It is a great existing sports venue that is run by CPS and needs updating. The playing field is dangerouly outdated. This existing field could benefit numerous schools (instead of just Schurz) and programs in the neighborhood and can generate income from admissions and concessions and private leagues. This facility already has lights and is underutilized.

  • Patt Timlin Grew up in Avondale; moved into Old Irving in 1977

Agreed. I don't think every high school needs a sports arena attached. I think all the CPS schools should share some sports facilities. That would give each school more money to spend on other necessities like improved classrooms, computers, academics. Schurz should fix up clean up their existing field, keep it as a practice field and put the rest of the money to better use.

  • miesterburger just a regular guy

Yes, Hanson is a dump, and needs to be updated. The field turf is brutal and the sound system is vintage 1980. Also the score board is a joke. Gately was updated and now is

Found BUNNY RABBIT 4100 block North Kenneth

I found a very frightened fluffy creamy white rabbit at around 8:40 tonight Monday. Bunny is now in a large bird cage at my house. My dog would love to get to know him/her better. I have never housed a rabbit, not sure if I should put it in a small room (bathroom) with a litter box, if I should put a cozy blanket in the cage or what. I don't have time to research this right now. I really need for someone to claim this baby asap. I'm on the 4500 block Kostner. 715-2765 call anytime. even if it's not yours but you want to help please someone take this bunny. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

  • Poor thing.. i had found a house rabbit in a cage in my ally yrs ago... i kept him but they need room to run its a little much caring for a bunny... i learned the hard way but he had a good life... i wish i had the room to take him

  • Anti Cruelty doesn't adopt out bunnies yet (only g. pigs), but they do take them in, spay/neuter them, and rescues take them from there (various ones).

I've had house bunnies for about 15 years, so if you have any questions, feel free to message me.

Found Keys

I was out for a walk yesterday and found a set of keys laying on the sidewalk on Roscoe just east of Keeler. There are five house/office keys and a key for a bike lock. There are also two gym membership cards. Call (773) 319-6089 if these belong to you and you want them back.

  • Loulu Me

Maybe one of the gyms could contact the owner? No one wants to lose keys.

  • Wicked Fast BMW Average Chicagoan who loves her city

I too would contact the gym from which the membership card came. Have them look up the member and call them in front of you. Have them explain that you have their keys and that they can contact you to get them back. Have them leave your number. That wat you don't have the individuals address and the club employee who does does it have the member's keys.

If you have been following the Schurz field renovation story, then you know that even though the school has been planning and seeking funds and working with the city, the neighbors knew nothing of this plan until a couple weeks ago. As October was quickly approaching, my fear was that the meeting would be so last minute that no one would be available or no one would hear about it until after it was over. Then we heard that a meeting was scheduled for Oct 1st and began spreading the word. But we had no confirmation and nothing official and neighborhood groups did not want to spread the word, in case it was incorrect. Now this:

" just got off the phone with Anthony Alfano from Alderman Arena's office who told me the meeting on the proposed field will not take place on October 1 as he had told me because the people in Schurz 'were not ready.' He said they will notify us directly as well as by OIPA. He said they would now the date of the meeting by week's end."

Schurz is not ready? They have been planning and getting money together for this since the beginning of the year but they are not ready to have a meeting and talk to the neighbors?! We are all afraid now that this is ploy, that they will spring a meeting on us with no warning so that no one knows about it and they can say that no one was interested and no one attended. Please keep the Oct 1 date open just in case.

Be vigilant and please pass this on.

  • Or if you think the field may bring concrete benefits to the school and the to those in the community attending the school, please attend.

  • Patt Timlin Grew up in Avondale; moved into Old Irving in 1977

To be clear, we are not opposed to ANY improvements to the field. It obviously is in bad shape and the school has not cared for it in ages. This proposal seemed less about the students and the school since it suggests taking the field away from the school and...

To be clear, we are not opposed to ANY improvements to the field. It obviously is in bad shape and the school has not cared for it in ages. This proposal seemed less about the students and the school since it suggests taking the field away from the school and giving it to the park district to make money. We would like to see an improved field for the school and students and community but not so much as to disrupt the quality of life of people living here. There can be a happy medium. People were just very angered at the lack of transparency.

Schurz H.S. Athletic Field Proposal Meeting Set

A proposal put forth by the Urban Schools Foundation to strengthen the athletic program at Schurz High School, including the construction of a new IHSA standard athletic field from Waveland Avenue to Kostner Avenue, is in the conceptual design stage.

The goal is to provide our future students access to the same amenities and competitive programs offered at so many other neighborhood high schools. However, the proposal would require the closing of Waveland Ave. to auto traffic between Milwaukee and Lowell.

This is a significant change to consider. If this project were to be approved, it may require traffic flow changes to the sounding streets.

We all want Schurz to improve and thrive as a strong neighborhood school - one that draws families to the neighborhood, and one where our families are proud to send their children. I will seek solutions to address and mitigate concerns that have arisen from the initial proposal.

I will host a public meeting on the proposal at 7 pm Wednesday, Oct. 8, in the Schurz Library, 3601 N. Milwaukee. There, you can learn about the proposal and share your concerns and suggestions.

From the day this proposal came through my door, I made it clear this field must be prohibited from hosting or being rented to adult leagues. Its primary user would be Schurz Athletics. The community would enjoy second priority, with a schedule that is driven by the local stakeholders. The basic proposal includes a soccer field, football practice field, and either tennis courts or softball field.

Please remember that the proposal is just that - a proposal - and no final decision has been made. This stage is the time to engage in a dialog about how we help Schurz improve while mitigating any potential negative impact.

  • NASCAR Old Irving Park

Thank you for posting this Alderman, we will definitely be attending.

  • How come they can't redo the field at Hanson stadium so more people and different schools and programs can benefit from an updated facility in the neighborhood

Best Extracurricular Activities for Kids

We have found a local gem at our local park in Dunning Neighborhood, which is Culture and Arts--Woodworking Class. We highly recommend the offering to all, ages 6 and up. Teacher Joe has 20+ yrs. of working with wood and children. Recently, the projects included little race cars and bird homes. The process includes drawing the model, cutting the wood, putting it all together and painting. It is a practical hands-on learning for anyone.

Do you know of any other nearby quality children programs that should be considered?

  • Park Ridge Park District is amazing with its wide array of offerings for both the young and the old: cooking, dancing, sports, science, robotics, chess, theater, music, singing, preschool program and you name it. Check out their catalog at

    http://www.parkridgeparkdistrict.com/

  • Stage Coach Theatre, Park Ridge, http://www.stagecoachschools.com/parkridge.html

This is an exceptional offering for ages 4-16, broken into two schools: Early Stages and Main School. In Main School, ages 6-16, students get a specialized teacher for each of the three segments of the program: dance, drama and singing. We always look forward to the end of session performances. The stage setup, costumes, acting, dancing and singing is well worth the wait.

I called alderman's office today to find out if they are ever going to do anything about the horrible state of Waveland between Lowell and Milwaukee before someone breaks their neck or their car axle. It's ridiculous that they have let it go this long. We are nearly to the next winter. I was told they are going to patch it.

It needs more than patching. It is down to the cobble. We will do some patching. "There are a lot of propsals regarding that street." I asked by a lot of propals, are you referring to the proposed closure and he said yes. "Yes, but they still have to to studies with the traffic and Fire Department and Police."

Meanwhile Old Irving Park Association said those studies were already done in March and April. As usual, city politics. Never up front. Lots of secrecy. Lots of double talk. And could someone please tell me how this Mr. Tucker who is championing this whole thing (with his son in the athletic marketing business who would stand to make a lot of money from these sports arenas that dad is proposing to put up all over the city, using some city TIF money -- how is that not a huge conflict of interest? Anyway, this just in - so mark your calendars. Anyone who uses that street or who plans to EVER drive around this neighborhood needs to attend.

Hi folks--

Hot off the presses: Ald. Arena will host and moderate a community discussion about the proposed new playing field at Schurz H.S. on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 7 PM, Schurz library. Flyers will be distributed this weekend. Schurz H.S. and Urban School Foundation reps will be there to answer questions. Meeting open to everyone interested.

Meeting the Voters in the 38th Ward!

Well I was out in the Ward today, got a few more signatures, I really like talking to the voters, I find that I have a great deal in common with the people of the 38th ward.
The Veterans mostly older, are very supportive of me, the young families like where I stand on eduction, the fact that I have been married for 37 years and have six kids gives me creditability when talking about the problems we are facing, one person asked "me why do you want to be Alderman"? the answer was simple I said "because I care"

Ok local residents [who were never asked in the first place,] do you think Waveland is an unnecessary road that allows unwanted access to residential streets? Seems to me to be one of OUR main access points since all roads lead north from here!

"$1.2 million capital campaign to construct an Athletic Field / arena" - an ARENA, no less, with no resident input?

So let's get this straight: close a street, take down approx 10 trees, build a bus turn-around on a residential corner, extend the field into a soccer/football field with a baseball diamond at the other end, a sports "arena" with no parking, rent it out for nights and weekend with no toilet facilities, no bleachers or seating?

And the Champion Alderman Arena thought it best NOT to mention this to the residents?

  • Pamela, you brought up a good point and valid argument. Someone probably made the suggestion to close off Waveland because they didn’t want people passing through but that’s indicative of someone who wants to keep their neighborhood safe and quiet.

When I say ‘we’ I’m saying “us folks over here on Kostner” because I found out from my neighbors. But we don’t matter as much as the folks who live on Waveland and Lowell which is why I specifically brought them up today. I asked if anyone knew them because they live outside. They're out there all the time and I know because I pass by every day on my power walk. They’re a friendly group and it seems, they moved here in 1977. Is it fair to them to say, “Take it inside” because they can’t hear each other anymore when they’ve been doing it for 37 years?

  • Patt, Tucker is suggesting a nonprofit for Schurz too, I‘m sure. Just because it’s a nonprofit doesn’t mean he doesn‘t get paid a salaried position. Alderman Suarez turned it down because of his constituents, his community, his people. Here:

Election Season!

Yes it's election season! as you probably already know, when we knock on your door you the voter hold the keys to the city council, you need to ask some very important questions of the person your giving your signature to such as where they stand on the issues, like crime, the city work force, privatizing of city services and selling of city assets, also eduction, and what are their plans on dealing with these issues, and last but not least, do they support the current Mayor and his agenda?
