Good Afternoon Partners,

In an effort to ensure that all of our youth are college and career ready, CPS has launched an initiative to help out-of-school high school students re-enroll in school. To that end, we opened 3 Student Outreach And Re-Engagement Centers (SOAR Centers). The SOAR Centers are located in Roseland, Little Village and Garfield Park.

We will be holding an open house to provide more detail regarding the new SOAR Centers on Thursday July 24, 2014 at the JLM Center at 2622 W. Jackson, Chicago, IL 60612 at 9 a.m.

You can make a referral to the SOAR Center by simply sending us an email at SOAR@CPS.EDU. We will reach out to the student as soon as possible and offer the following services:

· Develop a re-enrollment plan and a graduation plan for each student.
· Assist the student with selecting and enrolling in a school that best fits his or her needs.
· Assist students with developing strategies to overcome issues that have kept them from succeeding in school.
· Develop an individual success plan that maps out academic, behavior and attendance goals for each student.
· Provide online credit recovery for students for whom we are unable to provide immediate school placement.
· Provide opportunities for students to earn service learning hours.

Please join us on Thursday July 24, 2014 for more information. If you are able to attend, please RSVP to ssmith114@cps.edu. If you have any questions regarding the SOAR Centers or would like to receive SOAR marketing materials, please call Sean Smith the SOAR Manager at (773)710-7329.

Jose's Frozen Yogurt!

New frozen yogurt store on 4032 N. Milwaukee just north of Irving Park. I stumbled on it and was surprised at the new stores opening on Milwaukee. A nice spa called Luxe Blue and this frozen yogurt store where you pay by the weight and add-ons. I'm glad to see more stores like these in 6 corners! Support our local businesses - can't wait for the Chipotle to open.

It's actually called Josi's Frozen Yogurt. Thank you so much for letting us know! It's difficult to find frozen yogurt around here.

"Illinois has been shown to be in the bottom half of the rankings in some of
the most prominent studies that rank states according to their business tax
climate. Although, some question whether the entire enterprise of
measuring an overall business tax climate for a state can be valid or useful,
below are some of Illinois’ rankings based on the most popular methods of
comparison:

1. State Business Tax Climate Index – 31st
2. Small Business Policy Index – 35th
3. State Competitiveness Report – 38th
4. Economic Outlook – 48th

 Illinois rankings in the area of business tax climate have fallen over the last
several years. Much of this falloff can be tied to increase in the personal
income tax rates (from 3% to 5%) and corporate income tax rates (from
4.8% to 7%), which became effective for tax year 2011."

Free breakfast and lunch are available for children under 18 all summer across the state.

Free breakfast and lunch are available for children under 18 all summer across the state. Children and teens will not have to apply or show any proof of family income in order to receive a meal under the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Meals program. They just need to show up.

Parents can search for sites by zip code at www.summerfeedingillinois.org, or by texting “FoodIL” “AlimentosIL” to 877-877 for details about the closest summer meal location.

If you know of anyone that this could help out, please feel free to share it.

Raise Your Hands is hosting a 2015 CPS budget rundown tonight at 6:30pm. Raise Your Hands will show you how to find the proposed budgets for your schools and talk about how you can speak out for your schools at the Wednesday budget meeting. You don't need to attend the meeting tonight to go to the budget hearings on Wednesday.

The CPS budget hearings are this Wednesday night at 6pm at Wright College, Malcolm X, and Kennedy King colleges. (Registration starts at 5pm). Why should you go speak out at this budget hearing? Because CPS is cutting the budgets for many of our public schools that our neighborhood children attend. We can't let them further weaken our public schools without putting up a fight.

Examples of some of the proposed cuts...

Kelvyn Park High School -$1.8 million
Belmont-Cragin Early Childhood -$1.6 million
Steinmetz H.S. -$448,000
Northwest Middle School -$ 313,000
Reinberg -$30,000
Thorp -$ 275,000
Foreman -$728,000
Schurz - $711,000
Department of Academic learning and Support- City wide -$75,000,000
Department of Diverse learners Support and Services -$88,000,000

Teacher/Staff Wanted

We are Apogee Academy, a new concept in education opening this fall in Old Irving Park. We expand on the concept of the one-room school, with mixed ages from 5 - 18, but with today's activities, technology and information. What we're looking for is an individual open to the concept of alternative, self-directed education. Of course, experience with children in a full age-range is a plus, along with good organizational skills, marketing and promoting, and a positive approach. Please send your resume along with a paragraph about yourself to: apogeeacademy@gmail.com Hope to hear from you!

  • robin in WRP Tired, very tired

I was poking around your website, and I have a question. How will children from families not equipped to homeschool/unschool fair at your school (such as a single parent, with one or more jobs)?

  • The school could work quite well for such a family. Parents are welcome to stay during the school day if they wish (one of the things that makes our school unique) but they do not have to stay. They may drop off and pick up, and older students may get to school and go home on their own.

While other countries improved on the test, the USA performance stayed stagnant, which took us further away from the top ranking. I am glad we finally have Common Core and NWEA MAP and other means to help us get better. However, we need to fulling understand and use these tools to reap the benefits. Obviously the parents and teachers must partner in providing differentiated instruction to each and every child. Daily reading (and vocabulary development, like with Worldy Wise), math practice (love to use IXL.com) and writing (working with story starter kits can be fun) are obvious tasks. Any experimentation/play with kits like Lego, Knex, National Geographic science kits, chess, art, music, theater, public speaking and debating will boost the creativity, critical thinking and communication skills. While mind is exercised by the above means, we certainly should not forget the sports to keep the jitters away, to stay healthy and to develop a cooperative play.

Thanks for your help!

  • It is a 10-unit building, but we don't need the whole building done. The front 1/3 to 1/2 of the building was done last year. There are some problem areas in the remaining portion, mostly the sections within a few feet of ground level.

Tim thanks for your patience, I have been really busy at work this past week. I have not forgotten.
