Bring Kilbourn Back Its Rock

So something(probably one of Koch Poultry's directionally challenged trucks) has "picked up" the giant boulder that we affectionately refer to as the Neilson Rock, which usually sits outside of Ross and Kim's old house on Kilbourn and Berteau, and dragged it east on Berteau, and south on Kostner, leaving it to rest shamefully in the middle of the street. Ok, it's not really in the middle, it's in the parking lane. Is there anyone with a forklift or back hoe that would bring it back to it's natural resting place? I'm thinking Alderman Arena? A phone call somewhere should be able to get this done. It's a hernia maker, so do not attempt to lift it! It's a little worse for wear, but it wants to come back home to the corner of Kilbourn and Berteau. C'mon...someone? Kenji?

Ok local residents [who were never asked in the first place,] do you think Waveland is an unnecessary road that allows unwanted access to residential streets? Seems to me to be one of OUR main access points since all roads lead north from here!

"$1.2 million capital campaign to construct an Athletic Field / arena" - an ARENA, no less, with no resident input?

So let's get this straight: close a street, take down approx 10 trees, build a bus turn-around on a residential corner, extend the field into a soccer/football field with a baseball diamond at the other end, a sports "arena" with no parking, rent it out for nights and weekend with no toilet facilities, no bleachers or seating?

And the Champion Alderman Arena thought it best NOT to mention this to the residents?

  • Patt Timlin Grew up in Avondale; moved into Old Irving in 1977

Yep. Athletic marketing. Park District field rented out for use by leagues every night and weekend. That is not about the students. Oh, they will give them first dibs on it's use but it's all about someone making money and that wouldn't be Schurz or the athletes or students.

  • Paul--I don't think OIPA has taken a stand on this yet because there has been no public meeting.

Smart Phone Compatability

I am tired of paying the high monthly rate charged by Verizon and am considering changing to another provider. However, I have an Apple5 and am not sure if it will work with other cell phone providers. Does anyone have any experience with this situation?

Fritz - If you are content with your iPhone (not sure how anyone could be when they could get a Windows Phone, which are a million times better... I digress), you should look at pre-paid plans, which can save users a fair bit of money. I know that AT&T allows your out-of-contract phones to be converted to their no-contract Go Phones. I'm not familiar with Verizon's plans, but you could probably stop in at a Verizon store and tell them that you would like to get an understanding of what your potential savings would be if you were to convert from your contract plan to a pre-paid or pay-as-you-go plan. A lot of contract plans cost as much as they do because people buy new phones at discounted/subsidized prices and are then locked into a contract for 1-2 years; however, if you are no longer in a contract and your phone, which was likely subsidized, is paid off, you should be free to take it off-contract and move to a significantly cheaper pre-paid/pay-as-you-go style plan.

As A&K noted, your phone will always be a particular make and model (Apple iPhone 5S, Nokia Lumia Icon, Samsung Galaxy S5, etc.) and each particular make/model will also be made to operate on a specific cellular network (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint) based on the chip inside; you would not be able to change the network that it operates on, but you can find, as I mentioned pre-paid sorts of plans to save money on your plan if you are not someone who always needs the latest and greatest phone.

  • A&K

Keep in mind pre-paid plans come with less bells and whistles. No roaming network, service is less places etc.

If you never leave Chicago then pre-paid should be ok. It is cheaper.

  • Thanks Irving Dave for clarifying that!!!
Again... Why are religious organizations allowed to post for profit events here and never asked to please post elsewhere?
    Seems very unfair...
I agree that some of the self advertisement is kind of annoying, but then it should be called out to everyone.
However, I would rather put up with a few self ads from time to time from a neighborhood business that pays taxes and employs people than an organization that doesn't.

  • A&K

Religion is touchy. I have had plenty to say about all the postings but stay out of it. Most of what I have to say is not in support.

An example would be the training for people to help incarcerated people get back to being productive. I have comments on that but it's safer to keep them to myself.

Opening religious topics could lead to a firestorm.

Since last fall, I became outwardly concerned with the state of Irving Park Rd near my home. Our Illinois Route 19 acts much like highway, between Harlem Ave. and Cumberland Ave. There are two cemeteries on each side of it, which are Acacia Park Cemetery and Irving Park Cemetery. Cars ZOOM BY with little concern for the pedestrians and bikers. Anyone who would pull a traffic report would note that deadly accidents and bumper to bumper accidents are not a stranger here! Two of my neighbors were KILLED over the past two years, one on a bike and one in the car. This year, someone just DROVE THROUGH the rusted-out fence into Irving Park Cemetery. Often KIDS on bikes, MOTHERS with strollers and ELDERLY with their shopping carts either struggle through the gravel and mud filled paths, where used to be once concrete sidewalks on "both" sides of the road, or they maneuver their equipment into the street. These both northern and southern sidewalks used to be functional until they were abandoned in the late 1960's or so. If anyone would talk to the CROSSING guard by N. Pioneer Ave, ours is Kristen, would learn of the frequent dangers of crossing the street. She will be back in the fall when the school restarts and would appreciate having traffic lights installed, too. The requests to fix these sidewalks have bounced around various public offices with mixed results. I PLEA with all concerned citizens to assist me with getting this overdue safety issue resolved by contacting all politicians overseeing or soon-to-be overseeing this area. Hearing from the community-at-large vs. one neighborhood mother is far more impactful I am told. Thank you!!!

Please e-mail your support for the sidewalks to:

Would like to finalize the plans this week.

Although everyone in the community will be invited, we do need Canty's Elementary School's LSC representation to attend the meeting since it involves safety of the passage to school at the intersection of Irving Park/Pioneer. Are there any interested LSC parties on-line? The more of LSC representation the better.

Having personally flyered most of Old Irving in the last 20 years, from Montrose/Elston/Pulaski to Addison/Milwaukee, can attest to its diversity in people and housing stock. That's what makes us a real & vibrant Chicago neighborhood. The Centrum proposal will be vetted by many city departments as part of its application process. As it stands, it appears to be a good fit for that site, with a few tweaks.

Speed Cameras

I have been thinking about the issue of speed cameras, I think it's fair to say their only true purpose is to make money for the city, it's just another tax, I would prefer a Cop with a radar, A speed camera can't pullover a motorist, a Cop can, a speed camera can't search a car for weapons or drugs, a Cop can, A speed camera won't deter a criminal driving past it at 2AM in the morning a Cop can, a speed camera can't react to a crime in progress a Cop can, unfortunately our the political leadership in this city Knows the "cost of everything and the value of nothing" just a little Carmen sense!

  • per city of Chicago website:

The fine is $35.00 for a speeding violation six or more miles over the applicable speed limit, but less than 11 miles over such speed limit. The fine is $100.00 if the recorded speed limit is 11 or more miles over the applicable speed limit.

I didn't contest the speed camera ticket I got because it was only a warning ticket. But I just checked the video again and it is indeed for only 2mph over the limit and it says that next time it will cost $35 and go on record as a moving violation. And so since it's very easy to coast a little faster without touching the gas pedal I prefer to stay 5mph under the limit in speed camera areas. I'm not worried as much about the $35 as the moving violation which creates issues with insurance companies.

Peoples Gas work (photo)

Does any one have ANY idea when Peoples Gas will be wrapping things up? I've had a HUGE 5 ft deep hole in front of my house for about two months now! It's covered with broken, wet plywood (see photo). I'm just hoping no one gets hurt and that they can move on so our neighborhood can get back to normal. Kids at the nearby childcare center go on daily walks past this eyesore. 4700 block of Berenice

  • Chicago Carol retired

When the gas company came to our house, it was explained that the new meters were needed because the pressure in the pipes was going to be changed. When does that happen? If the new lines are in, I'm referring to the ones on Major that took forever, then what's going to happen all winter with the higher pressure and no new meter?

  • Mary on Patterson Mary's Beat 1633

By reading all the comments about the work by Peoples Gas, I DREAD the thought of the work when it begins on my block. Broken pipes, sewage, open holes, etc.etc. I had flood control put in two years ago and am now worried about that being messed with. I didn't spend thousands of dollars on the system to have it ruined by careless workers. Will the work continue through the winter?

The Process!

Good Morning The process of running for Alderman is a lot of work as it should be, the people that I have been meeting have been so kind, it’s been a wonderful opportunity to listen and more importantly to learn want people want from their public officials. They’ve been telling that they feel like they have no voice in the way city government is conducted. Because of my background I have very good connection with working people, because I’m in the Military, I have a certain connection with the Veterans, because of my large family I understand the teachers and their concerns, and as the father two Chicago Police Officers, I understand what they facing on a daily basis.

My questions to you is if you got rid of the cameras and increased police presence how would you propose to pay for the additional cost of the officers when you are losing a revenue source? How would you control cost in order to balance the budget? I think Chicago is endanger of driving people, businesses and tourist from our city due to over taxing and too many fees. Don't get me started on the parking meter debacle..

Do we really need 50 Alderman?

Well what do you think? personally I think we can manage with about 25, It's time for City Government to join the real world! We pump our own gas, bag our own groceries, and if we have to keep 50 Alderman let's make it a part-time position that way maybe they'll have to get a real job!

  • ok, so from what I am reading the alderman get a staffing budget and they have to work within that budget. you have one chief of staff, then 3 staff members is the average.

  • Phil Huckelberry Green Party 38th Ward Committeeman

Don, thank you for the heartiest laugh I've had in weeks.

Rest assured, even if there were only 4 wards, I'd still be stuck as one of the committeemen, since I'm the only person in the party who actually knows what the Central Committee is supposed to do.
