  • Tami -- up near the top of this thread you posted what looks like an insulting swing at Nadig, saying <" I'll email Nadig Newspapers and ask for a retraction. I'm tired of these newspapers manipulating facts for online audiences. "> and then <"Or rather, a correction. ">

Educational Camps in Our Neighborhood?

As Christmas nears, some summer camp registrations open up, like Chicago Botanic Garden and Camp Invention, as per links below. Some camps provide an incentive for signing up earlier like the opportunity to break up the payment into installments or getting some upfront discount. However, many quality camps are far away from home and we often wonder why?

Some high schools have realized that offering their space for summer camps is a win-win for all the parties involved. Resurrection H.S. offers a hugely attended Camp Invention. DePaul College Prep, previously known as Gordon Tech, offers Green Apple Campus. Whether these schools charge for summer freed-up space or not, the camps can act as their marketing tool and buildup their good neighbor image. The program providers get both transactional and relational rewards. And, the local families benefit in a number of ways, like the nearby location, hopefully the neighborhood-adjusted-cost and get acquainted with the local educational providers.

During my recent conversation with Intrinsic Schools, based on my own experience with the CPS programming and from reading about ACT testing and beyond, I realized that our children are greatly in need of writing workshops, not just a stronger STEAM focus, which rightfully gets lots of attention due to its own merits. Since writing is not being tested on standardized tests, I found that it is not the focal point of the school experience.

I hope that our community leaders will find ways to fill this writing void with companies like 826CHI and will address other well-known educational needs by leveraging their relationships and other resources.

Someone rummaged through our car at Grace and Kildare.

My wife and I were leaving for work this morning and noticed that someone had entered our car last night. They may have stolen a radar detector that we never use, but thankfully they left our stroller and carseat. No signs of forced entry... Just a pile of stuff that is usually in our glove box was on our passenger seat. We also believe that this happened previously... roughly a week ago. Has anyone else had any problems?

  • I have seen the homeless trying all the doors of the parked cars in hope of finding one open in order to have a place to sleep for the night.

  • I left one of my vehicle doors open and someone went thru my vehicle as well, Also on Laramie. They didn't take anything, But they were kind enough to leave their house keys behind! they must have got scared because they didn't even take my spare change

Love Letter from the Garbage Man

A big sticker was placed on our recycle bin today. It was dark outside but I think it's an orange "hazardous waste" sticker with three boxes. None were checked. In black marker they wrote "NO BLACK BAGS".

You can't put black trash bags in the blue bin anymore? No advance notice either?

  • That's nuts!!!!

  • My recycle driver is ok with with plastic bags. He worked for the city for twenty plus years and employed for some time now with Waste Management, a fortune 500 company. He says if there were really a major problem with the sorters and multi-million dollar sorting equipment over these...

My recycle driver is ok with with plastic bags. He worked for the city for twenty plus years and employed for some time now with Waste Management, a fortune 500 company. He says if there were really a major problem with the sorters and multi-million dollar sorting equipment over these bags, that something would most assuredly would be done about really enforcing it.

What he definitely refuses to collect is a bin with any kind of styrofoam in it. And oh yeah, no dead squirrels or other animals - sometimes floating in water in the bins so they don't smell. In certain areas of the city he says this is very common.

Thank you police!

I saw a guy doing a huge piece of graffiti out my window yesterday, not gang stuff, potentially artistic, but geez it was broad daylight and he was just setup without a care in the world. I debated calling the cops because no one was in danger and I doubted they would come anyway, but the brazenness of it got the better of me and I called. I debated calling the cops because no one was in danger and I doubted they would come anyway, but the brazenness of it got the better of me and I called. A little later I looked back out there and thought, "great now his buddies are here to help" only to realize when one turned around that he had a badge around his neck and they took the dude away. Hopefully him and parents pay to paint over it and not me and my tax dollars, probably just wishful thinking, but still thanks police for coming and making me feel like there is a chance.

  • robin in WRP, I don’t know whether your facts are correct/incorrect. Unless this gentleman qualifies for dual enrollment, your information was unnecessary which made you sound disingenuous.

  • I don't think she was being disingenuous, I thought TMI. He gave her his phone number then she started talking Medicard. I thought Mike was a Welfare recipient or something similar?
