Littering - Really?

Just an observation - I'm amazed at the apparent acceptance of throwing trash out one's car window. Maybe it's just timing, but once again yesterday sitting at a stop light along Cicero and the car in front of me opens their window and tosses their trash (papers) out the window.

Is it just me or is that ok here? I moved here from Texas about 3 years ago and although Texas has other issues, it was just not cool to...

I moved here from Texas about 3 years ago and although Texas has other issues, it was just not cool to litter - seriously, in the 30 years I lived there I don't think I ever saw this sort of behavior, yet in the 3 years here I've seen it a half dozen times. There was a long running campaign in Texas - "Don't Mess with Texas" that seemed to really work, as hokey as that sounds. I hear no such message here.

For almost a year we had a guy that would sit in his car late at night along our street, eat takeout food and toss all his leftovers out of the car - I finally waited up and called the police and even after they chased him away he still came back, like it was perfectly acceptable.

I really don't get it?

  • It happens everywhere. It's not a neighborhood thing, since I've seen it happen in higher end neighborhoods from people who are just passing through. (Personally, I keep a bag for garbage in my car and take it with me when I park at home..). There are now two garbage swirls the size of Texas in the ocean.

JimmyMac - I still remember that commercial of the American Indian with a tear running down his cheek and Sue - I do remember Clean-Up Week. Be nice to get that commercial to air again. My kids still remember when I was driving and stopped the car and pulled to the curb and made one of them walk back a block to pick up what they'd thrown out the window before giving them the lecture about all of us standing waist deep in trash if everyone threw their papers out the window. I think it was a gum wrapper - lol.

Love Letter from the Garbage Man

A big sticker was placed on our recycle bin today. It was dark outside but I think it's an orange "hazardous waste" sticker with three boxes. None were checked. In black marker they wrote "NO BLACK BAGS".

You can't put black trash bags in the blue bin anymore? No advance notice either?

  • Kathleen Boyle Your dog's best friend! (Taking real estate break)

I thought we weren't supposed to us plastic bags in the blue bins at all, just dump recyclables right into the can.

  • Maureen T. Master Gardener, Landscape Designer

Last week my garbage collector wrote "no plastic bags" in white grease pencil on the top of my blue can. I still collect recyclables in plastic Jewel
bags in the house but I just dump the items in the blue can and recycle the Jewel bags. Not a problem at all.

BIZCamps by Network For Teaching Entrepreneurship

Came across a unique program to inspire high school kids to stay in school by giving them a hands-on learning on how to start a business. A non-for-profit organization can create a full blown program or just a camp. See the links. I would hope that our local high schools and charitable organizations would take a look at this promising opportunity.

Wright College Registration, Continuing Ed, Children Swimming Question

Can anyone tell me when their Spring 2015 registration for kid swimming classes begins? These classes fill-up quickly.

Can anyone download their continuing ed catalog instead of this exact-match class look-up? We always get their mail catalog too late.

Of the many registrations we complete throughout the year, their process is a test of my endurance.

Thank you!
