Let's Take Our State Back!

It is time to change the leadership of Illinois. Instead of growing poverty and crime, let's grow self sufficiency and pride. Let's empower our people with quality education, jobs and hope for the prosperous future, especially for our children.

For the responsibilities that teachers have they are grossly underpaid. Don't forget, they teach the younger generations who will take care of us when we're old. If we can't pay them cash, we can give them a pension. It's only $10 now but when they retire, it'll be the $100 they need. If the fund is paid into and the investments are sound. Pensions are normally more than 60% funded by investment returns. That's way cheaper than the SS or the proper pay.... There are articles in various news outlets to back this up...

  • EAB resident

I agree Andy. "If the fund is paid into and the investments are sound". But the city of Chicago has not funded the pensions for years. Where is the oversight. The teachers union should have been all over the city to ensure their pensions were funded.

Since last fall, I became outwardly concerned with the state of Irving Park Rd near my home. Our Illinois Route 19 acts much like highway, between Harlem Ave. and Cumberland Ave. There are two cemeteries on each side of it, which are Acacia Park Cemetery and Irving Park Cemetery. Cars ZOOM BY with little concern for the pedestrians and bikers. Anyone who would pull a traffic report would note that deadly accidents and bumper to bumper accidents are not a stranger here! Two of my neighbors were KILLED over the past two years, one on a bike and one in the car. This year, someone just DROVE THROUGH the rusted-out fence into Irving Park Cemetery. Often KIDS on bikes, MOTHERS with strollers and ELDERLY with their shopping carts either struggle through the gravel and mud filled paths, where used to be once concrete sidewalks on "both" sides of the road, or they maneuver their equipment into the street. These both northern and southern sidewalks used to be functional until they were abandoned in the late 1960's or so. If anyone would talk to the CROSSING guard by N. Pioneer Ave, ours is Kristen, would learn of the frequent dangers of crossing the street. She will be back in the fall when the school restarts and would appreciate having traffic lights installed, too. The requests to fix these sidewalks have bounced around various public offices with mixed results. I PLEA with all concerned citizens to assist me with getting this overdue safety issue resolved by contacting all politicians overseeing or soon-to-be overseeing this area. Hearing from the community-at-large vs. one neighborhood mother is far more impactful I am told. Thank you!!!

Please e-mail your support for the sidewalks to:

Senator Mulroe at senatorjohnmulroe@att.net;
Representative Martwick at repmartwick@gmail.com;
Alderman Sposato at info@aldermansposato.com; and
Alderman Cullerton at Timothy.Cullerton@cityofchicago.org.

  • Tomorrow, Wed., August 20th, at 7 p.m., Senator Mulroe will be appearing on CAN TV for an interactive forum. One can call in the phone number provided on the CAN TV screen and ask questions live. Also, one can send their question via a Facebook or Twitter account. This is our opportunity to bring up our petition. Let your voice be heard.

Today, I got enough of assurance about the Chicago side (the front of Irving Park Cemetery) sidewalks that I feel that they are likely going to be put into place in the spring of 2015. Our State Rep. Martwick already "officially" committed funds for them and they are being transferred from the state to the local hands to make the project a reality. Thus, Alderman Cullerton is willing to put the sidewalks on his capital expenditures schedule for the next year. As you know, our Irving Woods Neighborhood is moving from Sposato/Ward 36 to Cullerton/Ward 38 next year. Hopefully, soon, I will get the word that the 2015 capital expenditure plan incorporates them.

The traffic study is under works through Senator Mulroe's office. It is likely that its results will determine the faith of the traffic lights at Pioneer Ave. We are waiting for an update on the process.

The Norridge side (the front of Acacia Park Cemetery) sidewalks need more review. I will share their info as more facts come into light.

  • shitpotle isn't open yet?

  • Yeah- I asked at the other chipotle on Addison and they said they've been held up for a couple weeks now on permitting/licensing issues. But otherwise they're pretty much good to go...but who knows how long that will take. sigh.

White Work Van Break-ins

Wanted to give every one out there with a working van a heads up. My work van has been broken into 3 times within one year. I mainly keep it on pulaski and bellee plaine but this last time I had parked it on belle plaine and harding. These thieves know what they are doing since they managed to pry my side door off and steal my tools.. Its unfortunate, but I hope I can prevent it from happening to someone else by posting here. For I know we contractors work too hard for someone to just stroll on by and break into our vans

  • Janet Baker ISON over France (squint!)

Very sorry about your tools and damage.

  • Kristine Cloud 30 year resident of North Center

Maybe you could buy a rattlesnake and keep it in your van. SURPRISE!! Sorry this is happening to you, though.

Misplaced Recycle Bins

Every time my recycling gets picked up, the Waste Management driver places my bin 1/2 a block or more away. All of my neighbor's bins are completely scattered as well!

Why does this matter? I keep my bin clean and others do not. I just don't understand why the driver does this EVERY time! I even clearly labeled my bin with my number and my garage as well. What's up?

  • Portage Porker 23 Year Portage Park Resident

There are a couple of C? shaped alleys near me, and I hear that the guy can't make the turn (Chicago truck makes it somehow) so he drags the bins down to the end of the alley. Also you have to remember that it's a one man operation. He drives...

There are a couple of C? shaped alleys near me, and I hear that the guy can't make the turn (Chicago truck makes it somehow) so he drags the bins down to the end of the alley. Also you have to remember that it's a one man operation. He drives the truck and jumps out to unload the bins. They might try to do 6 or 8 houses at a shot. But yeah, I'm the same way. When I come home and the bins are scattered, I sort everyone's out. Easier to spend a few minutes doing it than to be angry about it all evening.

  • Six Corners Sam proud father and husband

Yes. We are a T-shaped alley, so that makes sense. Thanks. I'll just keep sorting them out for folks.

Vandals and thieves

In the last 3-4 weeks there has been a series of crimes committed in the area of Irving Park to Byron and Kolmar to Kilbourn. Attempt bike thefts, graffiti, and a broken window. Please, as the police have advised at a recent community meeting, if you see anyone walking or driving through the Old Irving Park neighborhood that seem suspicious call the police and give a detailed description of the individuals.

The Christian Family Coop

Has anyone sent their children to the 1 or 2-year-old program? I can't find any reviews of the program in general.

  • JJ Old Irving Park

I can vouch for the Christian Parent Coop on Tuesday and Thursday at Mt Olive, great program and we've met good people there

  • We're involved in CFC. It is a great place for kids to socialize and families to connect. Private message me for more details.

The Perfect Candidate for Alderman of the 38th Ward

Hello,

I have a question for the residents of the 38th Ward. In your opinion, what qualities and beliefs would you like to see from a potential candidate running for Alderman? What political party would you like to have representing the 38th Ward? If you were to become Alderman, what would be your top priority as far as your first order of business?

  • Thomas Motzny Last one out of Chicago please turn off the lights

@Pro 38th Were you born here? 38 -- Belmont Ave., north branch of the river, Fullerton Av., Robey St., (Damen Ave.), Armitage Ave., Humboldt Blvd., Sacramento Blvd., Fullerton Ave. and Kedzie Ave. THAT was the 38th Ward in 1930. As you can see time change. If you don't change with the times you get left behind.

  • 1) Public Safety
    2) Community and business enrichment
    3) Maintaining public areas so that they are clean and safe

Missing calico cat

My Cat didn't come home last night. Dark pink collar with rhinestones. Mostly white with brown and black. Very friendly and not very big. 3700 Kildare area. Please message if you have seen her.

  • Yesterday at about 12pm we jumped on 94 heading north on the Foster entrance and just shortly after I noticed a calico cat laying on the right shoulder of the road. I really hope it's not yours but worth checking out.

  • Thanks for letting me know. I did check and fortunately (for us) it's not our kitty. Please keep on the look out. She is so cute and has a dark pink collar with rhinestones and couldn't be cuter! We miss her so much!!!

  • I hope you find her, I love calicos. I'm going to assume you put flyers up, and all that.
