DISASTER HOTLINE for the 23rdWard!

When a disaster strikes, people look for help and expect to get it from their elected officials. These past several months, we have faced cruel weather conditions where heavy rains and gusty winds left many residents with flooded basements, downed trees, damaged roofs, downed power lines and broken gas mains. Many of these conditions could be life threatening. People lost electricity, needed additional trash pick-ups, required prompt assistance to have sewers opened up, etc. It is unfortunate, that in 19...

It is unfortunate, that in 19 years of alderman Zalewski being in the office, residents have not gotten the assistance they deserve, but help is on the way.
If elected, I will create an aldermanic DISASTER HOTLINE with open phone lines, not just a recording, to assist and provide information to residents of the 23rd Ward. My aldermanic staff and I will answer phones from 6am till midnight during any emergency to provide answers, take requests and expedite outage repairs. The residents would be able to call my office to find out when electricity will be restored, downed trees cleaned up or how to get assistance in pumping water from their basements. These are issues the public deserves to be helped with. It is just the right thing to do when people need help.

Again, ZALEWSKI asked to reward a grant of $3 Million Dollars to SHOP-n-SAVE, who is not union, and pays low wages unlike srobertsk preference of grocery store Jewel-Osco which they have one near SHOP-n-SAVE & an ALDI. ZALEWSKI then took several contributions from SHOP-n-SAVE and other companies that received TIF grants as well. These are facts. Yes, I did find that

You might call it donating for "political stability", but I call it unethical. What I do agree with you is that this is not illegal. However, not long ago is was not illegal to hire someone based on their sex/race/religion/sexual preference; it was also not illegal not to long ago to apply Jim Crow Laws at the voting booth.

Personally, srobertsk, I apologize if you felt bullied. As a female I often feel harassed even at the Senior Center where I volunteer often.

I also agree with you two on their not being a need for a "Disaster Hotline". I think it would make more sense to get volunteer community members to have a neighborhood disaster task force to help alleviate any emergencies that the busy 311 lines can't get to. Then ask for donations from businesses for supplies and what not.

  • how can a woman be bullied by a man on the internet?? I can see in person but sitting at a keyboard the male and female are on an even playing field, and any person albeit male or female must have security isues

Our amazing team of community organizers started with just 10 salons and now we have more than double that. Team A23 is all about working with the community to benefit the entire 23rd Ward both east and west side of Cicero Ave. This is the kind of leadership and community outreach you can expect when we get Martin Arteaga elected to be the next 23rd Ward Alderman.

With many families struggling and living paycheck to paycheck in the 23rd Ward of Chicago we understand how costly “Going Back To School” time can be for families. That is why A23 Field Organizers went out to Local Hair Salons in the 23rd Ward to help offset the cost of Haircuts for Back to School at just $5.00 MONDAY TO THURSDAY starting August 18th-21st & August 25th-28th . Just present your school ID or print the coupon below and give to one of the following participating Hair Salons below.

Call for an appointment or if you have any questions call the Martin Arteaga for 23rd Ward Alderman’s office at 708-505-9166 or email info@arteaga23.com.

Working together we can bring the CHANGE the 23rd Ward needs! Thank you to all the hair salons and barber shops that have participated.

Please visit our website at www.move23forward.com for a complete list of salons as we continue to reach out to local businesses.

Yep, Hammertime..I am here also! Jen was not demonize get anyone, but simply asking how giving away their services is helping the financial crisis of the business owners andtheir employees. For example, if I owed a salon that offered this deal for $5 and my usual price is $10 for a haircut, where is the other $5 dollars coming from? Did A23 supplement this effort by paying the deficit or just expected the owners to take a loss? Most salons and barbershops rent chairs to stylist and barbers, so they can service teir clients. Subsequently, they earn money in order topay their rent to owner. If stylists are asked to reduce their fee, it reduces the money they have to pay their personal bills and the rent to the owner. Again, stop getting bent out of shape, because someone calls your person to the carpet on an issue. This should be a warning to voters that A23 is about fluff and might skirt the issues once in office!

  • Actually most of these salons had similar promotions going on and were happy to join in. They had the option to say no, pick 1 day, or all 4 days. Of course there were people who said no but the majority of the salons that didn't participate was due to the fact that they were short staffed. Personally I think that with 40 salons this promotion was a success and we appreciate and thank all the salons/barber shops that participated. :-)

Lost Cat

Last seen August 16, at 1:30pm, near 44th and Keeler. Microchipped for Feline Friends Chicago, where we originally adopted him from. No tags. Responds to "Sarge." Any information, please reply to this post. Sarge has a "brother" and two heartsick humans who miss him very much.

Mercury & other materials of concern have been taken out of std alkaline batteries. Also, there were issues with batteries leaking, getting warm, & occasionally starting on fire - at least making a mess. This is why many programs have been stopped. Chicago's HHHW collection refuses to accept std alkaline batteries, instructing to dispose in regular trash.

I agree. The acids that may leak out of used or stored batteries can be yucky even dangerous if they come in contact with eyes, skin, animals, .... But it is easily neutralized by other trash.

A much bigger concern are lawn chemicals. This is where focus should be. Scotts and other stuff is very dangerous. The warnings on the bags should be taken seriously. How many change their clothing before coming into the house after using this garbage - if they use it? Sprays for house plants & Round-Up. IMO, we will be treating this in the future with the concern we now apply to mercury, asbestos & lead.

Rechargeable batteries are still a concern. (cell phone, computer, watch, toys) These should be collected & taken to a facility. The most convenient is Chgo's HHHW facility on Goose Island (~ Division & Halsted). They are open 1st Sat of each month 8AM-noon; Tue 8-noon; Thur noon-7PM. Something like that 312-744-3060.

I've been there many times over the years. It's worth going at least once. My suggestion is to plan to be there the saturday's they are open by 10am. It is easily an educational moment for the young and old alike.

I collected HHHW from neighbors & AHCA members when I lived in AH. I would be willing go with with you Up2uUp2me with enough notice some saturday to Chgo's HHHW for educational purposes. We could meet on the SW-side, you taking your transportation with material for drop off, me taking mine with some room for any material overflow, leading you to the facility, then me parting my way, you on your own to return.

Thanks for bringing awareness to this topic.

  • When Walgreens and the Public Libraries were collecting batteries, I collected them and stored them in a plastic lunch bag on the kitchen counter top. Within a couple of weeks, I had collected a good handful of batteries. It wasn't long before I walked into the kitchen and the bag exploded, expelling black dust. I had an asthma attack.

I wonder if the same thing happened at the public collection sites.

You have to be careful storing and collecting batteries, they can and will explode if not kept cool.

Are the public servants we elect competent enough for the job? Should our public officials take IQ tests, or equivalency exams? I want someone in office who can balance out their own checking account before putting their hands in my pocket.

Source: Medilll Reports Chicago / Public Record - Recorder of Deeds.

I wasn't sure if you could file for bankruptcy multiply times, so I goggled it.

How Often Can You File For Bankruptcy?

Bankruptcy is a legal process that is designed to help both consumers and businesses eliminate their debt or repay the debt under the protection of bankruptcy court. Presently there are no limits to the number of times you can file for bankruptcy. Bankruptcy law determines the length of time between filing for bankruptcy and multiple filings may result in debt that is not discharged if it appears you are abusing bankruptcy laws.

You don't say what your skills are but I'm guessing that you were in the retail or service industries. If true there are numerous jobs available in the area although I am sure that the wages may not be as high as you would like. You might want to try the Department of Employment's website. It lists a large number of blue collar jobs and you can apply on line.

Martin Arteaga Talks Development for the 23rd Ward!

Let's talk development. Let's talk University Village. Do you remember when Maxwell Street was much rougher and grittier than it is today? Let's talk development. Let's talk University Village. Do you remember when Maxwell Street was much rougher and grittier than it is today? I can remember and I am sure you do, too, because it was not very long ago. I spent time at UIC and I was able to play a key role in that community center development. The result was a successful redevelopment and the creation of the popular and much-patronized University Village. Residents and tourists no longer have to tolerate the grit, the abandoned buildings and the feeling of hopelessness that those things bring. Residents, tourists, students, passersby, and all can now enjoy walking, jogging, biking, and patronizing the safe and vibrant streets of University Village. This is a perfect example of how valuable resources can invested intelligently into the community so that EVERYBODY WINS.

To revitalize the 23rd Ward, we need community development and community outreach experience and HANDS ON LEADERSHIP. Throughout the ward we see vacant lots and abandoned buildings that are vandalized and underutilized. Let's take matters into our own hands. Let's revitalize the 23rd Ward. I'm ready and I'm up to the challenge. The time for change is now! We need to revitalize the Archer Avenue Business District and redevelop the area near Midway Airport. We need more business and jobs. This is what I will fight for as your next 23rd Ward Alderman.

  • Sounds like a great idea! How will funding be obtained? Our ward doesn't need another taco joint. A Panera bread would be awesome!

  • no taco joints or dollars stores.
    Panera, Potbellys, Chick-fil-a

  • Agree - Panera, Cosi, Corner Bakery would be totally awesome.

But what does "Let's take matters into our own hands" mean?.

sewer issues

Does anyone know if the city plans on working on the sewers in the area? I have seen so many people get water in basments after the heavy down pours we have gotten. Those once in 100 year storms that happen every year now. Other areas have gotten new "super" sewers etc and it has kept water out of the basments. I would not mind my street ripped up for a few weeks if it meant I would not care if it rained or wonder if I would have to help a neighbor get rid of a foot of water in there basment.

  • Hello everyone..please keep an eye out for Dolly..she has been lost by 46th Leamington since July 28th..urgent she is found..has heart condition....

One stop job shop

Why not assist the 23rd Ward residents with finding jobs? I believe that one of the aldermen’s most important duties is to help their residents to pursue their career. Currently, there is not one source to go to and review positions available in government. City, County, State and Federal all have different locations to review and learn about their job openings. If elected, I want to make it easier for job seekers by having a JOB CENTER within my local aldermanic office. Residents can come in and browse to see what positions are available. My aldermanic staff will be assigned to working with job applicants in helping them in filling out their applications.

  • Always good to have a professional overlook a resume. Just a thought.

Thank you Alderman Zaleski for fixing the millions of potholes to my drive to work causing me not have to buy new tires 4 times this year already. Oh wait that was a dream I had last night. Guess Dreams don't come true in this case,

  • Archer Heights Guy Long time resident.

AC - Why are you resurrecting a Dec 2011 post thanking the Alderman for removing unecessary speed bumps to promote your own agenda? He acted on a request from the communty, which is what he is supposed to do. Why give sarcasm to an Alderman for doing his job?

Assuming one million of your "millions" of potholes are 12" long each that would mean one million potholes equals 189.4 miles. So where the heck is your job that you commute to?
