Fed up with the Riff Raff at Arthur Ashe Park!

I am new to the neighborhood and I must say that I am already tired of the gang of young men who hang out near Arthur Ashe Park everyday. I live in the Lake Terrace Condo and I cant even open my windows because of all the noise and cursing and screaming and hollering that goes on at the park and right beside the building. Loud music playing that begins as early as 9:30 A.M. on a WEEKDAY! I can only imagine that this situation will only get worse as the temps begin to rise! Is anyone else annoyed by this problem?

  • Happy making better choices

Safety is a fair concern. I would say to talk to your fellow residents about that phone tree

  • If the activity is in the park then you need to discuss with the park district office. Apparently, the park supervisor is not going to do anything, the next in line is Anita Gilkey and her boss is Liz Milan. The park district security team is suppose to work with CPD to patrol parks.

Hello Everyblock family!

In November, the first Annual Taste of Charity Food &Clothing Drive was held in the parking area of Artis' Lounge. The event was benefitting You Can Make it Women and Children's Shelter and Su Casa Catholic Worker. This event was made a success by not only the business participants, community and volunteers, but a few members of the Everyblock Family! I would like to thank you all! The businesses in our community (Artis', Hana's Food & Deli, Reflection Nails, Campbell's Carribean Cuisine, Cash 4 Gold, and members of Staples, etc) were very gracious. This was my first event (post-graduation) and it inspired me to continue to have this event. A link to the video made after the event was posted onto Youtube and the link is below. You can also visit www.youtube.com and search for Taste of Charity Food and Clothing Drive (Chicago). I am planning to have this years event this summer, and look forward to working with businesses, hopefully having a few to come out to participate! Maybe our reps will be able to join!:) Updates for the next event will be posted. God Bless.

5th Ward Committeeman

Hello Friends & Neighbors,

Currently, Ald. Leslie Hairston is holding 2 positions in the 5th Ward: Alderman and Democratic Ward Committeeman in a Ward that has historically kept those roles separate. Check out this exciting article in The Chicago Maroon about William G. Godwin that shows the possibility of young, fresh, & energetic leadership for the people of Chicago's 5th Ward.

South Shore Neighbors

I am curious if there are other neighbors that live in close proximity to 67th Paxton/Merrill/Clyde that are tired of dealing with the young hooligans and disrespectful kids that have been dumped here because multi-unit building owners don't live here or care about the quality of residents they rent? I can not deal with another hot summer and kids that are out of control....

I am tired of the kids as well but I really think a good chunk sits with the parents. I knew to be home by a certain time and to respect ppl bc my mom would get me. These ppl try to be friends not parents and/or are afraid of thier kids. Yes the kids need things to do but the parents need to be held accountable as well. I live in a condo and the association had to rent a unit. The resident has 2 kids who had friends out of control. I pulled the kids to the side and told them to get it together bc they can't live here and behave crazy. If your friends act crazy it is the same as if you act crazy. I told the mom I spoke to her kids and she was surprised they had gotten out of control and has since addressed and solved the problem. That is a parent.

My point - Maybe we not only need to talk to the kids but the guardians as well.

@ Marion. OMG!! So happy you have a blog! That would be a great platform to use to communicate happenings, and constructive meetings and things. I'm a web designer/brand developer and started this site for south shore:http://www.wix.com/southshorethink/southshoreweb.

I started putting it together for another ad hoc group which kinda flopped. I've since moved on and started working on projects with another crew of friends and neighbors. It's not finished yet, but I would love to find a way to:

    1) Link this site and your blogs together
    2) Work with you/your organization to do some constructive projects.

I have done a number of projects with the Chicago Architecture Foundation and a few other activists/artists/architects in the area so I have some connections and lots of ideas but I'm missing concerned neighbors.

@All, If you are interested in meeting this week, please please let me know. I'm jonesing for some constructive activity and cohesiveness in SS. We can start "activating" almost immediately....like schedule a meeting for this week.

Rahm Trying Another Bait & Switch with Speed Cams

Here come the Speed Cameras and it's not the 79 that Rahm told the State Legislators when he got them to pass it but could be up to 1800. And thery aren't just Speed Cameras anymore now they may also be used as surveillance cameras.

Now he appears to be trying to sneak it past the City Council without review. This must be stropped and you can do it.

CALL - EMAIL - FAX YOUR ALDERMAN TOMORROW AND TELL THEM YOU WANT A FULL REVIEW BEFORE THEY VOTE AND DEMAND THERE BE NO VOTE ON WEDNESDAY - If you are in the 8th Ward that number is 773-874-3300

Wonder If He Will Agree Not To Spy On Us

It is nice that the Police Superintendent and Mayor are willing to assure Muslims that they will not spy on them. I wonder if they would be willing to make that same promise to Blacks and Hispanics.

Good News - The Court Got It Right

A judge on Friday tossed out the controversial Illinois eavesdropping law, which makes it a crime to record police officers, according to a published report.

Criminal Court Judge Stanley Sacks ruled that the Illinois Eavesdropping Act criminalizes “wholly innocent conduct,” and thus is unconstitutional,

Where is the the Pioneer building? The Pioneer Building was once the state of the art professional building in the community. It was the building that housed the Chicago office of then U.S. Congressman Harold Washington. . It also housed the southside office of the Chicago Urban League.

The building was built by the Nation of Islam. After the death of leader Elijah Muhammed many of the assets of the Nation were sold or foreclosed on and the Pioneer building was one that transferred ownership.

The change in ownership also started the downward spiral of the building. the Chicago Urban League consolidated their offices and moved and then U.S. Congressman Bobby Rush moved. The building had several small professional services left in the building and a horrific incident involving the then building owner marked the end of the building as the building was involved in a long legal dispute. The remaining tenants moved out and the building layed vacant and started to go ito major disrepair. The building was sold for back taxes but no one ever stepped forward to take it over.

The building became an eyesore as the glass windows were being broken, the fixtures were being taken out the building and it became a hangout spot for public drinking and loitering. The city of Chicago stepped in and declared emminent domain and gained control of the building. The building was put up for sale for $1 but the buyer had to show the resources to rehab the building whereas the cost would be between $500,000 to $1.0 million. Several entities submitted proposals and the process went on for a couple of years http://thesixthward.blogspot.com/2009/08/input-on-proposals-at-7801-s-cottage.html.

Now the process is over A.R Leak and Sons Funeral Home will raze the building and build a new structure and add some desperately needed parking. While some will not like the fact the building will be torn down, no one will miss what the building became.
