I reported over a month ago a two-building whereas mexicans had been rehabbing this two -flat with a building permit and without a dumpster. They were throwing the drywall, the old electric box and ports and old plumming into the back yard and the debris was flying all over the block into mine and other resident yards. In put this into the 311 system as an emergency and spoke on the telephone with an Inspector within the department, to the current date July 15, 2014 no inspector, no violation given for rehabbing w/o permit. The new owner of this building obvious has ties with the building inspector because I even report this to Alderman Michelle Harris but of course we dont expect any results from her office, which is a joke to the south side 8 ward. This is why a neighborhood and block go down in property value. She and the city allows these people to come in and work without permits and they destroy these homes from they are not licensed contracted to work under and make a mess of the valued properties in the black neighborhood. This whole City of Chicago Building department should be shut down. This is why those firefighters were killed in 2010 because the building should have been torn down and the inspectors of course took money under the table and/or didnt do their jobs in inspecting these buildings, now lives have been destroyed because of their neligence.

In some areas, contractors are gutting and rehabbing 2 and more apartment unit buildings in a quick fashion. What this poster probably meant when he stated that debris is flying in neighboring yards is that serious/deadly stuff like lead painted walls and ASBESTOS-laden chunks of stuff is flying about. I have a friend that moved in one such apartment building where the work was so shoddy and quickly done, the floors weren't even level. She and her family had awful problems call on a weekly basis.

People should NOT be happy just because some fly-by-night greedy "developer" is setting up a cash-cow for himself in your neighborhood where only the poorest and most desperate Section 8 families will occupy the building. This does nothing to improve the neighborhood. If anything, it further brings the neighborhood down.

And, yes, the new owners and "developers" are Mexican; and no, I am not Latino, but I do know about quite a few such developments popping up in the South Chicago area that are nothing but dumps. One such building didn't even have a furnace in it when the first tenants moved in which was NOVEMEBER. How did they expect Section 8 to approve such a place ???????? The management company didn't care because it was they who were dumb enough to think Section 8 inspectors don't change out basements.

How can we demand and expect better in our neighbors if we don't support whistle-blowers like this man (Will50)? You can bet, the owners of these rat-infested buildings do not and will never live in these buildings they are buying up like hot cakes.

Contessa, on the level of code enforcement, appropriate procedures, safety, lead and asbestos remediation, etc., I (and a number of others who've spoken) have no quarrel with will50's concerns. Indeed, I live in a "new" building that was so shoddily built that it immediately imposed unnecessary costs on the owners and renters and is rapidly falling into decay. I have a large problem with will50's, and now your, racializing/ethnicizing of the problem. The code issues are exactly the same no matter what the race/ethnicity of the people working on the problem (and your quotes around the word "developers" suggests that even you do not know who might be extracting excess profits by shoddy work). Contractors need to abide by the city codes and the city needs to enforce the codes. When I lived on the southwest side, my neighbor blamed any shoddy work she saw there on African-Americans. There again, the problem was not the ostensible race or ethnicity of those doing the work, or the race/ethnicity of contractors/owners, etc: it was the quality and code-conformity of the work. That's an issue worthy of a block club activist and community organizer. Organizing via racist framing is completely unworthy of the illustrious tradition of community organizing and reinforces the institutional racism that structures the very problems you are seeking to address.

Seven Grocers Turn Down Former Dominick's in South Shore, Alderman Says

In case you haven't seen this article, 7 grocers have decided against moving into the now closed Dominick's location at 71st & Jeffrey. I think it's a real shame that no one is willing to move here, but I'm sure that the unchecked rise in crime in South Shore over the past several years is the primary reason. Until we (residents, police, government) clean up the problem areas, no major business will open in the neighborhood.

Here's a link to the article:

The landlords are a whole other issue and good point to bring up. There should be an enforced do not allow landlord and property list that identifies the staff to ok the contract, as part of the random home visits the apt maintenance of the landlord needs to be monitored, landlords should be fined and publicly listed for improper maintenance and unsafe conditions, and cultivating buildings of terror. Ppl respond to hits in the pocket book and bad publicity. Part of the budget should include adds listings slum lords and failed units/buildings like the city does with failed health inspections.

For many reasons (inclusive of the more common ones of this forum), Alderwoman Leslie Hairston should be replaced by a more equitable and "hands on" alderperson. Her tenure has been one that has shown, clear, favoritism to some parts of the ward and has been overtly negligent to most others.

While it is not her fault that displaced tenants have moved into South Shore, it is a slap in the face that requests for assistance (in the absence of assistance from the CPD from reports of crime and others pressing concerns). For instance, the alderwoman has been consistently notified of drug activity, illegal auto repairs, abandoned properties, and even alerted to the increase of male congregation and loitering activity in the 7000 block of East End, the 6600 block behind Chase Bank, the 6900 block of Cregier, the open air drug activity in the currency exchange lot at 67th & Stony Island....and more. Now weknow that one of the accused murderers of recent crimes resided in the 7000 block of East End. There seems to be a network of males from the aforementioned areas...yet the alderwoman did nothing. The CPD did nothing (and the department on Cottage Grove needs a complete overhaul).

    I yield.

E.77th and Cornell area?

I recently purchased a property in this area, can anyone tell me the good, the bad and the ugly? Any recommendations for restaurants, places to stay away from? Ive read about the grocery store problems etc, not to mention the wave of recent violence.

  • JD Just an old man livin' in the 20 (th Ward)

With all due respect, are you for real? I find it somewhat incredulous that a rational thinking person would make an investment of this sort without first performing due diligence (or at least having it performed by someone on their behalf). You say you've read about "the wave of recent violence" (which really isn't 'recent' at all) ; what more need you know?

JD, I "lived" in Chicago back in 1999 where I attended school at SAIC. I moved away some years ago. I still have friends and family that live there. All of whom do not live in South Shore. Since you say you are just an old man living in the 20th, you should know blocks differ greatly within very short distances. I have personally checked the area out, but it takes months and years to really know an area, recent changes, etc. As for due diligence and investments of this sort, I own several across the country. some of my properties communities have changed greatly from year to year, mostly for the better. Most people can perform as much due diligence as they want but you never REALLY know an area until you LIVE there. I wasn't looking for insulting or trolling remarks. Just wanted to know "for real" about the general vicinity in short. Thank you for your two cents anyhow....

Mr. Davis has not responded to date and people gas sends out this butt kicking Tim Carr to do their dirty work. This is why the black community is going down the drain because of black butt kissers like these two who let their company come into our community and destroy and damage that which we have worked hard to upkeep. I am taking this issue to the state senate representative with an attorney who is representing me.

63rd St Beach parking lot closed. Why?

Dear Neighbors

As I was driving up from a small day camp that I am sponsoring in South Shore this week, I noticed that the 63rd Street beach parking lot is closed. They appear to be putting up a stage of some sort. Closing these parking lots near the beach creates hardships for families and may put small children in danger if they and their families have to walk from far away parking.

Does anyone know why the beach parking lot is closed?

People's Gas Workers Damage Residence Property

On July 18, 2014 at 7823 S. Ridgeland avenue, People's Gas was replacing the gas meter from inside the homes to the outside of my home. The workers of People's Gas drove a John Deere Shovel upon my parkway and onto my sidewalk and cracked two squares and various places. I have brought this issue to Alderman Michelle Harris and to the City of Chicago Mayor's Office and the Conserve Commission due to the fact that People Gas claim department are not willing to replace my concrete at their unprofessional efforts. No information either from the Mayor's Office nor Alderman Michelle Harrs.

Please be mindful of the workers from People Gas digging and replacing your gas meter outside of your home. The workers are not respecting our property and I had to file police report because they jump over my home wrought iron fence with a ladder. I had informed them the day before if when they got to my home, my neighbor have a key to let them in, they did abide by that. People Gas workers broke all the pvc piping to my erragation system in my yard and parkway and removed my sprinkler. The also as above, damaged with cracks two of the squares on my sidewalk and are not willing to repair. To all other neighbors, please post if People Gas have damaged any parts of your property while working at your home.

Sounds about right. I wonder how often this happens in Lincoln park? I'm sure repairing damage there wouldn't be an issue. Continue to seek a solution and hold them accountable.

  • Jolyon renter/resident

Has anybody spoken to a lawyer? I wonder if there is the potential for a class action? Just a thought: I'm not a lawyer. Good luck!
