Killing at 52nd Cornell

There was apparently a killing Friday night in the 52nd and Cornell block.

Authorities are classifying this as "involuntary manslaughter", not murder. Chicago Magazine did an interesting story how this City and other cities like Chicago work to lower the official murder totals. What's the story here at 52nd and Cornell? Was the suspect a convict felon, openly carrying unlicensed hand guns? Was he living rent free in our neighborhood on Section 8? What is the whole story?

Here is what we have so far:

"(CBS) -- A Chicago man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with a fatal shooting in Hyde Park Friday night.
Police say Paris Walker-Rush, 25, fatally shot another man inside of an apartment in the 5200 block of South Cornell shortly after 9 p.m. Walker-Rush was arrested at the scene without incident and is now facing felony charges for involuntary manslaughter and unlawful use of weapon.
Walker-Rush was ordered held on $900,000 bond in court Saturday."

Coyote On Metra Tracks

Just a heads up to everyone out there. I heard a howling noise right now, and even before I looked, I told my husband, "I bet that was a coyote." Sure enough, I looked out our door, and there was a coyote on the Metra tracks. This was near 54th and Cornell. So I guess they're venturing further south??? Is there anyone that I'm supposed to call and report this to, or is it just a case of letting them wander around? Worried for the little doggies around here.

  • There have been coyote sightings in Washington Park, Jackson Park and even in Harold Washington Park the last few years.
They normally roam during the hours of darkness and avoid humans. If you see one wave your arms and they will move on.

  • I used to let my cat outdoors until he came home one morning with a his tail frayed and infected. His tail was so damaged that it had to be amputated. The vet said that it appeared he was attacked by another animal such as a cat, raccoon,or opossum. Please keep you cat indoors! My cat still whines by the back door, wanting to go outside, even though he has been neutered.

51st and Cornell?

Anyone know why the flood of police cars on Cornell between 51st and 53rd?

  • If you read the article, this is an accidental shooting, not a murder.

  • The initial Trib article didn't make that clear, but yes, that seems to be the case.

Today I walked the "Point" and observed that the recent storm has revealed significant damage to the retaining walls.
The east end of the "Point" has significant erosion behind the retaining wall. The soil in numerous locations has washed away revealing the walls are in danger of collapsing.
Furthermore on the far north end of the area not reconstructed has been washed away and there is very little infrastructure preventing damage to the area behind this area.
Ten years back the Park District and Army Corp of Engineers indicated they wanted to reconstruct the retaining walls but the "Save the Point" group objected and the politicians vacillated and the project was deferred.
Then Senator Obama stated he would work with the group and the Park District and work out a compromise. We are still waiting!
Alderman Hairston claimed she would find a solution. We are still waiting!
The time for action is fast coming and the politicians and reasonable people need to step forward and act!

  • Not nearly as popular, but someone made and gave out "Fix the Point" bumper stickers. I think I still have mine somewhere.

  • bigmike2 retired police officer

Weather permitting I walked around "The Point" today. Fences are in place along with signs forbidding access to the rocks on the east end indicating it is dangerous.

It is time for the Save the Point group and Alderman Hairston to take action.

Why Are There No Security Cameras In The South Side Lakefront Underpasses

How do we get the city to put security cameras in and at the entrances to the underpasses south of 31st Street? All those lights are nice, but security cameras might deter some crime.

  • Early last summer, at the community meeting after the murder in the Iowa Building, Alderman Hairston indicated that there was cameras in the underpasses at 57th Street.
It appears she had her facts wrong,
Cameras should be installed in all of the underpasses on south Lake Shore Drive.
