Book Donations / Places to take used books?

Does anyone know of a good place in Chicago to donate some books or places that will take used books off your hands? I'm moving soon, so I've cleaned out my bookcases and have about 30 books that I don't need or want anymore. They're mostly novels, but a couple are more academic books. I'm not looking to sell them really, and I'd hate to just throw them in the trash.

Considering move to Hyde Park

Hey everyone. I'm considering an apartment on S. Drexel, right near 51st. Is that generally a good area?

Just for perspective living east of Cottage Grove isn't necessarily bad. Much of the area looks worse than it is... is there crime? Sure but crimes happen everywhere including HP and the northside. East of Cottage just isn't as built up as hyde park and the property values are lower. It's more of a mix of working professionals and lower income people due to the politicians allowing an over abundance of low income housing covering a small geographical area. But generally speaking HP, Woodlawn and Bronzeville are solid areas. Just be aware of surroundings and don't be quick to rely on the opinions of others. Go see for yourself and decide. Especially if you aren't from Chicago. Wherever you move in hyde park better have parking though. If not,

  • Do you mean west of Cottage Grove?

Giordano's @ 5311 S. Blackstone

The Manager at this location is very rude. Last Saturday, I called and ordered several pizzas for "delivery," to my dismay there were no drivers available. So I contacted a friend to see if they would "pick up" the pizzas which they graciously agreed. I called Giordano's and asked if they would take my credit card over the telephone to pay for the pizzas and the employee said no. So I asked to speak to the Manager. I explained the...

I explained the situation "no drivers available" I am not able to drive and I have someone to pick up the pizzas and asked if he could take my credit card number over the phone. Without hesitation or conciliation, he vehemently said "NO" in (to say the least) a "rude and unprofessional manner". Then I reminded him that his business offered delivery service and that none was available so could we compromise. Then the Manager became loud and aggressive in an unrecognizable tone that he would not and hung the phone up. Although the Hyde Park community boast on the taste of Giordano's Pizza (I agree) I will no longer do business with an establishment that wishes to accept my money but offers no respect to me as a customer. DON'T ALLOW GIORDAN'S @ BLACKSTONE TO GET AWAY WITH THIS TACTIC. PIZZA IS AVAILABLE AT SEVERAL LOCATIONS IN THE Hyde Park Area such as Leona's, Medici's, and Pizza Capri which appreciates its customers and the pizza is just as good.

  • Darlene,
Yes, you are correct but if the individual's signature does not match the one on card, the merchant may refuse the transaction at their discretion.😏

  • Absolutely, that's a fraud prevention requirement.

Best moving company?

Hi neighbors - sadly my time living in Hyde Park is coming to an end this month, and I'm looking for a good moving company. It's an in-city move, and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend good, professional, licensed movers, with reasonable rates. Last time I moved, I did it myself with a U-Haul and some friends, and that's just not an experience I'm looking to replicate. Similarly, are there any moving companies I should steer clear of? Thanks so much!

  • Thanks for the suggestions! We are doing a smaller move (2 bedroom in Hyde Park to a 2 bedroom in Uptown), so I will definitely look into these companies.

H2H was wonderful for us. fairly priced, punctual, delivered exactly what they promised. We moved from a large apartment in Hyde Park to a modest HP house with a stop at a storage unit. They brought the job in under budget and in less time than originally quoted. The same was true for a friend who moved from a North side 1 bedroom across her street to a new 1 bedroom. Doesn't seem to matter how large or small the job - the work is good. One note - this is not what some refer to as "white glove" moving service. They're just really reliable, trustworthy, affordable and super hard working. We had no breakage or damage of any kind. They even moved our piano. Best of luck to you with this move.

Experienced Handyman needed for Condo Repairs

Hello Neighbors,

I am beginning the search for a new handyman that could assist with a variety of tasks around the house, from floors, to paint, to drywall, and all things in between. Specifically, I'm looking for an experienced, preferably referred, handyman/contractor who is diligent and knowledgeable about condos and have done great work. If the work is great, I could recommend the individual to the association as we are also in search for a new building maintenance person.

Price is obviously a concern for everyone, so someone who's reasonable in rates would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks all, God Bless..
