Catch Basins Cleaning

I had recently seen a list of posts from May - Aug about flooded basements and plumbing services and serveral people had suggested A J Sewer in Wheeling. I live in Portage Park and was having problems for awhile a finally called them. They were very professional from the woman on the phone to the guy that cleaned the catch basin out with the suction hose and the guys that rodded the pipes. I am telling eveyone I know about the great service. I was tired of pumping water out of the basement and just as they finished, it started to rain. AH what a relief.

THANKS A J SERWER

  • Herecomestheman Character assassin.

How much did they charge for the pump out and rodding? I need my catch basin pumped.

  • Alright, what the heck is a catch basin? We may need it.

    @tami,

a catch basin is a basin that water from you sink and like washer drain to, the soap and sediment raise to the top and the rest of the liquid goes to the city sewer, over time the sediment such as soap and grease collect at the top solidities, sometimes requiring manual removal. then there is some residual that goes down the sewer pipe gradually and overtime builds up and can require rodding from the basin sewer pipe to the city sewer in the street, if there was no catch basin the sediment and grease would not raise to the top and go straight to the sewer pipe causing build up and may clog or slow the drain quicker if there were no basin. this typically looks like a sewer cap in your yard or basement.

if you don't have one, make sure you buy and don't accept one for free...

i hear free basin is bad for you.

Speed Camera on Irving Park Between Melvina and Narragansett

The speed camera is great really cut down on the speed AND traffic on Irving but it seems 1/2 of it went to the alley between Irving and Cuyler to by pass the camera. Can we get speed bumps or an officer there at least or awhile?

Thanks

  • I don't know of anyone that speeds past there but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I drove passed today and we did not speed and if anyone went around it was rush hour.

  • i sometimes forget that one being there, but at the times i travel that stretch, i don't think i am in danger of getting a ticket...

trick or treating in neighborhood today

does anyone know what time the businesses in the neighborhood will be passing out candy? thanks

  • also, I think I know why it was so cold, I seen elsa at josi's today handing out candy...

  • Every year the left over bite sizes go into freezer bag(s). When I feel a treat is deserved I take out one or two. They've lasted well into summer with almost no evidence of freezer burn. Or at least not enough to stop me eating them. Kind of like tomatoes a few weeks ago. Everybody had 'em, nobody wanted more.

Garrido or Arena?

Garrido or Arena
lease give an educated fact based answer, not just bash the candidates.

  • I support Arena for a variety of reasons, many of which have been mentioned here by others. What hasn't been mentioned yet though, is that Arena is one of the few Alderman who will stand up for Mayor Emanuel which is a big deal, especially on the elected school board issue. I'll also be voting for Jesus Garcia for Mayor.

Some moron "from Xfinity" just rang my bell at 7:30pm, in the pitch black of this late October evening, wanting to sign me up for their garbage service. Well, he almost lost his life. Raking Leaves... Into the street

Curious if anyone has an opinion to this:

Is it considered appropriate to rake the leaves from my yard into the street during street sweeping?

  • I was at a friends house in the Wildwood area today, and some landscaper dude had his blower out and blew one houses leaves into the street on Hiawatha I was shocked, the street was completely filled for like one full block, so not only will they blow around, but will blow onto someone else property. If I lived across from there, I would beat that stupid man senseless... well maybe not beat him, but I would have words or called the police

  • oh, across the street from me, this dummy always rakes his leaves into the street. one year we cleaned them up ourselves and left the bags in his front lawn. You'd THINK he would have gotten the message.... nope, dumb@ss dumped them in the street the following year.... its really such a mess.

Don't toss your pumpkins!

Hey guys!

I hope that you're all enjoying this beautiful fall weather we're getting. I was hoping to ask those of you that have pumpkins this year to save a few for me. My chickens LOVE them, and they're a great source of natural fiber, vitamins, calcium, and some even claim that they're a natural de-wormer (though I'm not 100% on that).

If you have a pumpkin that hasn't been chemically treated and you'd like to get rid of it, please let me know! I'd be happy to take a few off your hands! I roast them, puree them, and add fresh cinnamon (antibacterial and antifungal) and fresh garlic (ant parasitic and antifungal). I keep them in little baggies over the winter and serve them up nice and warm for the girls on those super chilly days. They gobble them right up!

If anyone is interested in donating your old pumpkin after Halloween, just let me know!

Thanks!

  • Bella,
I've got two large pumpkins (they're from Sam's Club, so, enormous!) - We ended up not having the time to carve them before Halloween, so they're still like new. It'd be a shame to let them go to waste, so you're more than welcome to take them if you're interested!

  • I usually just bring mine to the cemetery by my parents and let whatever wild animals
eat them. I have 6 pumpkins that I would possibly give to you, we got them directly from a farm

We Charge Inhumanity

This is not something new.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Charge_Genocide

The job our police do is not an easy one. Some of their own brothers and their leader do not make it easier when they ignore the humanity of those they serve.
Yes their are other issues but all of us and especially our youth need a return to being able to trust and not fear those who are supposed to be our protectors. A few neighbors drinking and making too much noise in the parklet should not put me in fear that the police will show up and put their hands on me. The balance of actual justified shootings and government sanctioned thuggery must be rightly divided.

Cheesecakes and not UPS. The electronic box was smaller than the one UPS uses. There was still a piece of paper on which to print my name with ink. I think MyGopher is missing an opportunity here and Instacart could be piece to make it happen. The array of grocers though would be next to impossible to coordinate. MyGopher was originally presented to me as a service that would shop local stores for any item I asked for in stock at sale prices for delivery or pick up. Delivery was free with a prescription delivery or seven dollars otherwise. The UX, UI, search options and back end never got digitized though and the service only worked well when I emailed a list of stores, items, prices and quantities to one very conscientious sales person who was trying to make the model work. If Kmart had an item they subbed in that item at the other stores price and the idea was they would eventually have a warehouse with the other stores items. We certainly have the spaces in Chicago to make this happen if the other stores were on board but giving up loss leaders, bait and switch and pricing obfuscations is not on many retailers to do list.

Looking for stained glass repair recommendations

I'm familiar with few stores nearby that do stain glass panel/window repairs. I have seen those in my travels. But I need recommendations from people who have paid for such repairs. I've done some stain glass panels myself - but I wouldn't touch this repair... Too tricky for my lack of experience. So I'm looking for an expert that will not make mistakes. Some pieces will have to be refitted (I have all the pieces) and the panel straightened out. Also, likely the framing is at fault, so the panel will have to be re-framed. Any recommendations for a good repair shop?

  • I just wanted to post an update - we decided to go with Drehobl Art Glass. Primarily, because it turns out their company originally made the panels I wanted to repair! It seemed like the right thing to do - to give the panels to be repaired to those who originally made them...:) Not a cheap adventure, but reasonable.

    Thank you all for help!

  • That is awesome! One of my colleagues works with Drehobl (Rick) - he is awesome and I know that they do amazing work.

Looking for antique clock repair

I have a small Ansonia clock that I need to repair. The clock needs a small repair but cleaning and oiling it would also be needed...

Can anyone recommend a good repair shop that can deal with antique clocks properly? And not in untimely manner? I understand that parts might be hard to get, but I just don't want it to sit forgotten on a shelf somewhere for 6 months, like it happened with another clock I took for repairs once...

  • Kapel Local Resident

Yes, I've been to Father Time a few times. They aren't cheap, but they get it done right. Also Chicago Clock Company is pretty reputable too but they aren't local to the area. There used to be a shop on Belmont called Raven Clock that did good work for very reasonable prices, but I think they moved to Elk Grove Village and now I think they go by a different name, it might be worth researching though.

  • I third Father Time on Belmont in the Roscoe Village Area.. They know what they are doing. Been there a long time too.

Another recommendation for Steve Mancini/Best Price Gutters

That's the point. How can you understand where things come from if you don't know WHERE they came from and HOW they happen to be?

As to the topic: I was reading today this article, http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/Felsenthal-Files/October-2014/Pat-Quinn-Personal-Life/ - far less jaundice than in Stewart's article. And I think explaining more about who Quinn is. We all know that he's a very good legislator and very bad administrator. You can see that in his personal life as well.

As to Rauner - I have an impression that I know who his wife is but I am not voting for his wife, am I? He has had time to present himself, but he chose not to. So, yes I agree with Stewart that Rauner is running a very bad campaign. But I can arrive at this without resorting to partisanship and baseless accusations.

And that's the other point: avoiding stupid partisanship.

Someone above mentioned Tony’s on Elston south of Montrose and I will second that. Their produce selection is great in general and the variety of other foods is good too (booze is pricey though). I’m on the fence about the whole GMOs vs. buying organic thing especially because a whole lot gets dumped into that one GMO category when there is no real harm to some of it and “organic” labels can be a bunch of marketing hooey. When it comes down to it, I’m way more concerned about what irresponsible factory farming with certain GMOs is doing environmentally than I am about what eating it is doing to my body. I definitely taste the difference with some things, though.

Of the two most well-known harmful spiders in Illinois, the black widow and the brown recluse, only the black widow occurs in the Chicago area. And the one in the photo is definitely not a widow.
