Yes, your agenda is important but...

please, do not use your children and yourself to block the public sidewalk in front of a runner at full stride. Especially at 9pm on a Monday. I have a schedule and a pace I have to keep throughout my run and politely said, "Sorry, not right now." I do not deserve to have you scream at me down the block after I barely squeezed past your blockade. If you would like me to have a look at your petition, please bring it to my door or approach me at an appropriate hour when I am not moving at 7 mph and I will be more than happy to have a look. Appreciate it!

now, I get it... they are trying to get you to buy more.... but it is not real pedestrian friendly.

I think if they want to do something like that it would be accumulative that the item would be on sale, but the more you buy the more you save.

to get the best price, I don't even consume that much pop. or if I figure out to carry it, I won't have the room to carry any groceries.

just wanted to ask, is there people out there buying 8 cases of pop to get the deal or is this marketing gone south on this one.

Shooting incident on Meade & Sunnyside August 13th

Why is there no story or information on the incident from last week, Wednesday, August 13th. Police were all over the area including Wright College looking for a young man who had a gun or fired a gun on Meade & Sunnyside, there was even a helicopter. I'm curious to know what happened.

  • I was just surprised, didnt think there was anything wrong with it. There was obviously a reason they had that much in on it.

  • i too was looking for story but never saw one. got call from dunham park where my son was in camp and they were on lockdown due to a "man wandering around with a gun." the park folks sent out email late that night that the person surrendered to police.

Doggy Day Care in Portage Park

We recently moved to Portage Park and are looking for a good place for those occasions when our work schedules mean too long a day alone for the dog. I've looked at two places - Central Bark on Pulaski, which looks great but has a one day/week minimum; and Barking Lot at Irving Park & Western, which has no minimum but some disturbing reviews on Yelp. Anyone have any experience to contradict those negative reviews? or another place you use for your doggy day care needs? Again, we don't need it every week, which limits things somewhat. Thanks in advance.

Try For your K9 in melrose park. Large facility and Nancy Reyes is great! They have all types of classes, training and I believe a swim pool. They also do doggy day care! We have taken our German shepherd there many times.

Quincey waits every morning at window looking out for Bob and when sees gets so excited! They will come to your home and walk dog, keep overnight at their place, you can drop off and pick up, you can pick your days, very flexible, real dog lovers....they are near foster and harlem.

Does anyone know of a daycare or a person who takes children to school? Something reasonably priced. I have my son that needs to be dropped off at school 4 days a week. Portage park elementary. My previous daycare has stopped all drop offs/pick ups. Thank you in advance.

  • Where do your kids go to school?

  • Sorry I see where they go.. Good luck!

  • Call the school. I am pretty sure they have the number of someone in the neighborhood who does that. They may know of other options, too. Also, I think the new daycare going in by Berteau and Central, behind Mia's, might be doing before and after school care. Not sure when they open, though.

The Chicago Tribune’s ongoing investigation into the city of Chicago’s red-light camera program exposes the program for what it is: a regressive revenue-producing tool that dupes law-abiding citizens.

The fine work by Tribune reporters David Kidwell and Alex Richards proves the red-light camera program, much like Chicago’s parking-meter fiasco, was a bad deal from the beginning. Pitched as a safety measure, red-light cameras are really a way to nickel-and-dime average folks. From shortened yellow lights to manipulated tickets, residents are sick of these tricks, as they should be.

Government must not treat its citizens this way. The red-light camera program should be ended completely or, at the very least, scaled back drastically with heightened oversight and accountability.

Since last fall, I became outwardly concerned with the state of Irving Park Rd near my home. Our Illinois Route 19 acts much like highway, between Harlem Ave. and Cumberland Ave. There are two cemeteries on each side of it, which are Acacia Park Cemetery and Irving Park Cemetery. Cars ZOOM BY with little concern for the pedestrians and bikers. Anyone who would pull a traffic report would note that deadly accidents and bumper to bumper accidents are not a stranger here! Two of my neighbors were KILLED over the past two years, one on a bike and one in the car. This year, someone just DROVE THROUGH the rusted-out fence into Irving Park Cemetery. Often KIDS on bikes, MOTHERS with strollers and ELDERLY with their shopping carts either struggle through the gravel and mud filled paths, where used to be once concrete sidewalks on "both" sides of the road, or they maneuver their equipment into the street. These both northern and southern sidewalks used to be functional until they were abandoned in the late 1960's or so. If anyone would talk to the CROSSING guard by N. Pioneer Ave, ours is Kristen, would learn of the frequent dangers of crossing the street. She will be back in the fall when the school restarts and would appreciate having traffic lights installed, too. The requests to fix these sidewalks have bounced around various public offices with mixed results. I PLEA with all concerned citizens to assist me with getting this overdue safety issue resolved by contacting all politicians overseeing or soon-to-be overseeing this area. Hearing from the community-at-large vs. one neighborhood mother is far more impactful I am told. Thank you!!!

Another recommendation for Steve Mancini/Best Price Gutters

We had Steve out this morning to take a look at our gutters and a large metal awning that we wanted removed; his quote was so reasonable that I hired him to take care of them both on the spot. Attempted garage break in

Has anyone had any issues this past weekend with kids trying to break into garages? My neighbor caught me on the way home today, and said around 10:30 pm last night, he caught some kids trying to jack open my garage. Thankfully, my alert neighbors have been great, but I don't know if they're trying anywhere else.

This was the 5300 block between Byron & Berenice.

  • @ beep, is that like a driveway alert alarm ? Can you post a link to the one you have?

  • Inactive User: Yes, I think that's what they call them. We bought ours at Harbor Freight (the one on Naragansett and Diversey) but I see they have them online for $17.99. I think we paid more in the store.
    http://www.harborfreight.com/wireless-driveway-alert-system-93068.html
I think these things are great, and can see using them in various places, like maybe in the attic facing the window, or basement facing the entry door, so you have some warning someone might be coming in.
Ours in the garage gives us a lot of peace of mind.

We never had what I would call a "bad" experience at CKT, and indeed sometimes we really liked it there. But I will say we were sometimes underwhelmed, and it was often nearly empty when we would go, at times when it should have been busy. These days, people don't talk to the manager - they review on Yelp. And a cursory scroll through those reviews echoes everything said here. So, why didn't they change then? I don't think it's an issue of "fixing" the problems as much as it was the model just didn't work there. Bar/diner? Everything a la carte? Counter service? The community obviously didn't go for these things. If that's the restaurant they want, I hope they find a community/location where it works.

My front porch is cracking pretty bad and this past winter just killed it. I don't know if it can be repaired of if the whole porch has to come down. The bricks in front of my house are crumbling and turning black. Also the foundation in the front needs to be waterproofed with that black tar. It's not a huge job but it's too much for us to do ourselves.

Any recommendations would be appreciated! I live across the street from Merrimac Park.

We need to completely tear-off and redo the roof on our house. I've been getting some estimates for it (I think we might go with Lindholm when we do it) but I'm trying to weigh out waiting til the spring (to save up some more $) because we also want to do a partial dormer to put in a bathroom upstairs within the next couple of years.

So I'm wondering if it's a total waste to redo the roof now, only to want to add the dormer for the future bathroom space in a year or two. I also have dreams of adding a bedroom above our kitchen (the kitchen was a first-floor addition years before we bought the house). Again, wondering how much of a waste it is to do the roof over the kitchen now, only to want to build up the bedroom in the next 5 years. That is the roof that is also our biggest concern - where the kitchen roof meets the exterior of the 2nd story.

So... any ideas on how much a ~12 ft length, 8ft high dormer might cost? I would just want the structural changes at this point (adding 6 ft up to the wall, and flattening out the roof in that section), not the bathroom yet. My dream master bedroom 2nd story would be 21x12ft above the kitchen. I wonder how much it would be to just get it roughed out in order to get the roof done, and then slowly do the finishes ourselves over time. We have family and friends in various trades (electric, plumbing, etc). But not structural changes.

Anyone have any recommendations on contractors I could get estimates from?

My girl friend and I tried a new place last night....

Food was good, service was good,
Place was clean....

CKT is one of our favorite places, but they've recently "closed for renovations." Anyone have any word on when they're reopening or if perhaps this is a permanent closure? I would hate to see such a great place close! Any info you have is greatly appreciated!

  • I really hope this isn't true! My husband and I love this place. The food and service has always been great.

  • Well, it seems as though it might be gone for good. We drove by yesterday and there was a realtors sign on both sides of the windows. Looks like it's officially for sale. :(

Find yourself in a bubble at Jefferson Park this weekend.

Seriously, a bubble booth is just one of many interactive art projects at Figment Festival 2014 at Jefferson Memorial Park this Sat. & Sunday from 10am - 6pm.

They have Dragons (two), Great Stories (Never Told), Clowns, Dance, Poetry, Hugs, Epic Food-Drive "Races" & More.

You can engage in Mad Social experiments, or record a song anywhere in the park. There's Morlas & Mustaches. Red Curtains & Rock Poetry. Beehive-like structures, Blues & Bubbles (we promised). Pushing more than 30 Art Projects, FIGMENT has one thing left to ask: WHAT ARE YOU BRINGING?

For more information go to http://chicago.figmentproject.org

  • What, no pony rides? Going anyway, both days.

  • wayne 25 year Irving&Austin res.

I would like to thank all involved for this project! My 4 year old granddaughter just loved it!! Special thanks to the ladies at the entrance with the hula-hoops, your patience really made her day...pony rides wouldn't have made the day any better for her!!!!

my garbage disposal died. now what?

my insinkerator died last week. i can go buy a new one, but need someone to install it. Recommendations?

  • Johnny Portage Park

Installation is very easy if you are simply replacing one. I'm sure a friend, relative, neighbor or any handyman can do it.

Another car broken into...

I know we live in a safer neighborhood than most but we deserve regular patrols just as much as any neighborhood. This is the 3rd time in the past few months that I have caught punks digging around in a neighbor's car. It has to stop... We need more police!

Well, as far as the money goes, and not the thugs we're talking about, it doesn't matter who is mayor. We made a bad mistake about fifty years back--or several of them, one of which was the completely unsupported idea that our earth's population was too large and that we had to take drastic steps (you might still believe it! ). As a consequence, the size of our families has fallen--for a whole lot of people fell to zero, because they aren't getting married or having kids at all, or maybe squeaking out just one poor tot. We have to depend on immigration to keep things afloat, and that population is poorer than the middle class kids who might have been born, although they did their best to buy up our houses until the lending crisis (that is, the greed crisis). And THEY'RE going home. Karen Lewis won't do a thing. She can't. She might cancel the red light cameras, but the pension crisis is going to sit right there on top of us, because it always was, from the beginning of time, a ponzi scheme in which the new kids supported the old farts, and bought stuff. That's the secret to any economy, the rest is how to divvy it up once the kids are born. The whole world has never before faced a situation where people just don't reproduce. But we won't talk about it. That's forbidden.

  • There has been a rash of auto thefts in the area (Jefferson Park); and the car of choice seems to be Hondas, according to police who live on my block.

If you hear of an auto theft in the area, please post location, date, approximate time of theft and make and model of car. Also please report if car has been found -- many are being found blocks away, stripped of many parts and catalytic converters.
