Children's Eye Glasses

Just found our out 5 year old needs glasses. Would appreciate recommendations for children's eye glass business, ideally would like to support a Portage Park business. Although we're interested in a place that's good with children, even if not right in the area.
Thanks.

  • Not in the neighborhood but the Opthamologist on Western avenue near Fullerton was great for our toddler. Lawrence Kaufman.

  • JMC Six Corners/Old Irving Park resident.

I highly recommend Aardvark eyewear, kids-only specialists. It's on Western just south of Fullerton. Odd little shop, busy... tons of frame sizes and styles to try, and most importantly the service & expertise is high quality, personalized, caring. I bought my daughter's first-time glasses there; have been back a few times over the past year for growth and comfort fit adjustments, and haven't been charged even for long consultations. Go during the week if possible, on Saturdays it's jammed. Good luck!

  • Yes, Dr. Kaufman at 2456 N Western Ave. in Chicago 773- 235-2020 is the best children's ophthalmologist around. I have taken both my glasses wearing boys to him over the years and he comes highly recommended.

6 Corner's Bistro

Great food, great staff, great atmosphere. Take advantage of the BYOB while you can.

  • Jayney Portage Park resident

I called the Bistro on Monday afternoon to make a reservation for 6 pm & was told they were closed for mechanical repairs but should be open later in the week. Annoying if they were actually open - we wanted to try them but they lost out on a birthday celebration for 6 people.

  • That's so sad....

Hector, are you the one that advises our government on how and when to invest for the future to cover the pension debt? Are you the one that tells them to skip the funding of pension fund, so they can cover the operating expenses instead? Are you the one that allows the CTU to pay only 2.2% of the their pay into pension fund to get 9.2% contribution on the paper? We are one of the worst run states in the whole country and should be bankrupt. It is people like you, Hector, that think that money is growing on the tree and that all one needs to do is shake it at leisure. Our cost of living is going up and the quality of living is going down, because of this gross negligence. Out with the old and in with the new. It is way overdue.

Someone said Republicans grow the economy and generate jobs. I've found, through personal experience, that the best time to start a small business is under a Democratic environment. I was a small business owner/operator. 2 of the worst recessions since the Great Depression happened under a Republican president - although Reagan had some help from Carter. 2008 was all on Bush. Greatest job losses in Illinois were from the 2008 near depression. And when Sunstrand was bought out as the space program wound down.
Hector was right about outlining Rauner. He has laid out no detailed plans. He's all vapor. He'll create job losses and reduced state services by laying off or privatizing as many state employees as he can.
Pensions are sustainable with a couple rule changes. But I can't explain further.
And if people want real change, move to the district of the real governor - Madigan - and vote there.

Best Donuts in the area, maybe in the city

This donut shop is south of Portage Park but worth the 7 minute trip. The place is called Somethin' Sweet and it's on Fullerton just east of Laramie on the north side of the street. Their sister store Kim Long, next door, has great Chinese food and again for $2.50 they'll deliver you tasty Chinese food and donuts. The owners are so nice and obviously like what they do. One of the best things is that they have a good variety even near closing time, 10pm.
Never thought I'd go on about donuts like this but this is a real find!!! And so unique. I don't take advantage of delivery so that I can control my intake, but I did order some Chinese food and a donut recently. It was delicious.

The mosque would be located in a triangular-shaped industrial building that is located behind a series of bungalows in the 4800 block of North Kentucky Avenue and that is bordered on all three sides by an alley, with no direct access to a street. The community center would be across one of those alleys in a portion of a community building at 4860 N. Elston Ave. that houses a car rental agency.
Project organizer Naser Nasser is scheduled to present plans for the project. The project would be contingent on the Zoning Board of Appeals issuing a special use for religious assembly.

Spiders in our Basement

They are creepy and all different sizes...Anyone know how to get rid of spiders? We moved into our lovely home in July. My hubby has sprayed a number if times...but they are big, and keep showing up. We have kids and a dog, so I'm worried about chemicals. Any helpful suggestion of what we can do or is there an exterminator out there you know of who might use more kid friendly stuff?

Six Corners Bistro

My wife and I had dinner at the new six corners bistro last night. The food is fantastic, our waiter was very friendly, the music choice was perfect. Not very loud and not annoying. I had the burger, they tell me it was ground fresh in house and it tasted like it. It's Byob but we were told a full offering will be available in a few weeks. They are a welcome addition to the neighborhood. The food is great, prices are fair, and the tables have good spacing. I didn't feel crammed in. We will definitely go back. If you have time pay them a visit. You won't be disappointed.

Looking for Volunteers

We are looking for teen volunteers to help with an event. The event is on Oct. 25th at Jefferson Park. Teens will help set up, wear costumes and clean up after the event. This is a great opportunity to get involved and get some service learning hours. Contact the park at 773.685.3316

  • Some schools allow earning service hours for community events. NDHS does. From their website:

"Service to the student’s parish, grammar school, or local community, which includes but is not limited to altar serving, volunteering to coach or tutor at the grammar school, volunteering time at community events such as charity or fundraising events, park or neighborhood cleanups, etc."

I like that the park is looking for ways to save money while giving teens an opportunity to be involved in the neighboorhood.

  • Thanks Jim, yes it's plain and simply a Halloween event. The event this Saturday from 3pm to 6pm is Costumes and Candy. Costumes are encouraged, volunteers are needed and families are welcome.

Orange Tabby Cat seen near Smyser Elementary

Saw a very friendly orange tabby cat with white feet near Smyser Elementary the night of Saturday, Oct. 18. It crossed over to Moody Street and was last seen near a blue house on Moody. I am pretty sure it was someone's pet as it was very friendly and looked healthy. I am concerned that it was lost and hope the owner can find it.

Trick or Treaters

So since this is such a "family friendly" neighborhood, shall my wife and I expect trick-or-treaters in the next couple weeks? I think she's dead (no pun intended) set on getting dressed up and passing out candies. If that kind of thing does happen, should we expect kids early in the day, or evening?

  • Narragansett and Addison area - we usually get tons of smaller kids right after school. Then there seems to be a lull around supper time and then things heat up again with a huge surge of older kids and larger groups from about 7:30 until 9:00 pm. Then it usually stops. I'm dressing as a frog this year, to pass out candy!

  • It's a Friday night, so expect a LOT of kids throughout the late afternoon and evening.
If it was a school night, they would be out early, almost after school lets out until about 8:30

New Gas Line, now basement leaks

Peoples gas was through my block a couple weeks ago and installed the new line along the side of my house to install a new meter. Well, when we got that heavy rain a week or two ago, I noticed I got some water in my basement right near where the new line is. Not standing water or anything, but at least a foot or two of carpet near the wall was wet.

How do I file a claim? Do i start with the city, Do I need an estimate first, am I just SOL? I mean, I can't PROVE that is what caused it, but it's kind of a big coincidence

As you have likely heard, the Mayor this week unveiled his proposed 2015 city budget. My staff and I will spend the next several weeks reviewing the 800-page, $8.9 billion budget with a critical eye, as I have in years past.

There are some positive items in this proposed budget: money for more pothole fillers, tree trimmers, and rodent control crews; more police trained to patrol on bicycle; and more support for homeless veterans and families. This budget also does not contain any property tax rate increase.

However, this budget also does nothing to address the looming $550 million pension payment that the state legislature has mandated must be paid to police and fire pension systems by 2016.

I welcome your input and ideas on how we craft a budget that reflects our values as a city. Take a look at the budget, and offer your ideas by emailing my office. ward45@cityofchicago.org

Energy Supplier Recomendations?

I started comparing my energy supplier charges on my Comed bill to that of friends, and as it turns out I am paying twice as much per kWh. I've researched a few suppliers like Spark, Integrys, and Direct Energy and all have rates to lock into for of 6,12, 24, and even 36 months. Do many of you have any advice on chosing the most affordable supplier? I average 1,000 kWh per month.

They cost more up front but contain no mercury like the curly bulbs. It's the most efficient option next to candles. The cost is a bit higher up front but if you are a heavy light user they pay off in a year or less.

I followed after them while dialing the police until they took off running on long toward belmont. I've already reported it to the cops and graffiti blasters, but keep an eye out for these two. They're pretty harmless looking young kids, one african american, one caucasian with dark hair, probably between 13-15 years old. One was wearing a blue and grey long sleeved shirt and the other a white long sleeved shirt or hoodie. They were pretty cavalier about it and were walking around with the spray cans in their hands. They actually got quite a lot done on my block, covering every garage with stupid-looking swastikas, gang-sign looking squiggly daggers and devil horns and stuff. I was really surprised they were able to cover that much area on a Sunday afternoon, considering how many people are usually out in the alleys around here, washing their cars, coming and going, etc.

I know that when garages get tagged around here, people usually freak out, imagining it as the harbinger of impending bloody gang warfare in our alleys, but these kids looked more like Justin Bieber in his "street art" phase...and about as threatening.

Anyways, keep your eyes out!

  • Wicked Fast BMW Average Chicagoan who loves her city

Did you by chance take a photo or video with your cell phone? Since they were so cavalier maybe they would have posed for pictures.

  • Chris, no that's not the kid. I do see a slight resemblance to Bieber there, though. My guys didn't actually bear any physical resemblance to Bieber, just in demeanor and the fact that they seemed to be little twerps doing something that they thought tough and edgy guys do.

It would have been good to have a pub on the block for a post-show drink. Maybe next year?

JP Trick or Treaters?

We just moved into the area, pretty close to Farnsworth Elementary. Should we expect a lot of trick or treaters for Halloween? Would they come out Friday evening, or Saturday, or both?

We've always lived in apartments before now, no idea what to expect! Thanks in advance.

  • Loulu Me

You will only get them on Friday. But given that it's Friday and kids don't have to get up the next day, you may have more kids later and really more kids in general. But feel free to turn your light off and be done with it at whatever time you choose and for whatever reason...going to bed, out of candy, whatever. If you find yourself with too much candy and you don't want it around, you can give two to each kid towards the end.

  • Janet, consider thanking your parents for giving you a more spiritually enclosing experience than others seem to have had. At near age 70 and even with seventeen years of formal education in Catholic schools my experience has always been much more macabre get-the-candy than prayers. Always looking outside myself for the fault I blame the candy and party decoration companies. And a depraved weakness for sugar.

No matter how the school board is put in place, it will be political because there will always be groups with varying interests vying for power.

The problem with the current system is that the Mayor's office can appoint folks who will rubber-stamp his agenda, which is related to the City Council also being a bunch of rubber-stamp artists. The mayor has too much power in this town. An elected school board, while inevitably imperfect, would be a way to wrest some power away from the mayor.

@Minerva, as far as CTU advocating for raises for its members, you can hardly blame them. The cost of basic necessities go up every year, so if you aren't getting a raise every year then you are falling behind. Your quality of life is decreasing.

Sure, blame our politicians for mismanaging our tax money. Blame the corporations and the lobbyists for off-shoring jobs to keep wages/benefits down in non-unionized jobs. But blaming the unions for preventing their quality of life from being slowly eroded out of the middle class? Nope.

I saw this coming a long time ago. When I was hired by the state of Illinois back in 1989, a counselor went over the pension plan with me. I could see then it was unsustainable. Employees put in minimal pension payments each month, retire at 55 (with a minimum of only 25 years of service), and then get pension benefits that greatly exceed their contributions. I'm eligible to retire in several years, if I want. I recently learned that my contributions over the years (with interest) will total about $180,000 by age 55. However, a retirement counselor informed me a few months ago that the pension plan will pay me $60,000 a year for the rest of my life, along with very good medical insurance. After only 3 years of retirement, the pension plan will have paid me everything I put into it. After that, the state foots the bill. I said to the counselor, "How can the state afford this?" She said, "Oh, the state is constitutionally obligated to pay these pensions." I said, "Well, sure, but what if they don't have the money?" She said, "The state is constitutionally..." I interrupted, "I don't care. What if they don't have the money??" She said, "By law, they have to pay..." I stopped her again: "But what if they DON'T HAVE the money???"

CityNews needs our help!!!

Take a QUICK second, and go vote for City News sister store in Evanston to get a $150k grant from Chase in their Main Street Grants program... We ALL love city news coffee, reading material, and truffles, and they have done A LOT for the community, we can all give them LITERALLY a second to click on vote... https://www.missionmainstreetgrants.com/business/detail/47801

omg. we used to go to that news stand in Evanston when i was a kid. about a week before a family vacation, Dad would take us there, give us each $5 for comic books - five bucks went a long way in the early 60s, and then collect the comics from us and not give them to us until we were on the road.

Pededtrian lights not working on Lawrence, Austin & Mason

I don't know if anyone knows someone that can get these lights fixed? But I have been calling for 3 weeks now and they are still not fixed. I'm not sure if the alderman can get this moving? However, the green arrows heading south on Austin are not working as well as the pedestrian cross walk lights.

I don't know if anyone knows someone that can get these lights fixed? But I have been calling for 3 weeks now and they are still not fixed. I'm not sure if the alderman can get this moving? However, the green arrows heading south on Austin are not working as well as the pedestrian cross walk lights.

This is a serious situation that needs to be fixed before someone gets killed trying to cross these intersections. With the 5 corners and traffic heading in differnt directions at all times, kids heading to and from school do not know when to cross. Before and after school there is not even an officer there to help the children cross the street.

Maybe if we all start calling and putting some pressure on the city, they will handle the situation? Please warn your children to be extremely careful I have seen several close calls over here, especially when it was raining and dark.

  • Thank you! I do remember this being a problem before. I was the one who kept calling. Thank you to everyone who helped get this taken care of. Good work neighbors!

    Received today:
    Good Morning,

The traffic “controller” at Lawrence/Austin had been damaged and is being rebuilt.

The temporary traffic controller that is in place does not provide all the normal functions.

We anticipate the controller to be repaired soon.

    Your patience is appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Mary
