Comcast Outage?

Hello all! I have Comcast internet service, and it has not worked for three days now. Comcast said that there is a known outage and my entire neighborhood has no internet service and a tech won't be out until Monday at the earliest. Is anyone else having this issue or is it just my building?

Explanation Please Mr. Cullerton

My wife signed up to do the Portage park art fair. We paid our $100 for a space. A spot on Long Ave. Tonight Mr. Cullerton decided he didn't want that. So 13 hours before set up time we are told no one can set up on Long ave. When we asked why the person on the phone said we don't know. The Alderman won't tell us why.

So Mr Cullerton, why?

  • A&K

That was definitely a misunderstanding. Thanks for clarifying. That makes a lot of sense.

  • If you need anything from Tupperware or Avon, this is the event for you. Three vendors of each.

My neighbor shows a water leak around a huge tree in front yard and the tree is starting to lean onto a lamp post and tilting it. There is a constant puddle of water on the lawn. I am afraid the tree could come loose from all the water build up and possibly fall into lamp post and cause a serious hazard. Someone came out about three months ago and marked street and sidewalk, and put some little flags in ground, but nobody has come out to fix problem. My neighbor said the Ward office has been contacted several times with the only response being, "it is on our work list". Does any one have any suggestions on how I can get this issue quickly addressed?

  • What about the ongoing leak. Shouldn't the homeowner be concerned about the water being wasted and potentially costing them $

  • @ dave, the leak should not make a difference to their bill since if they don't have a meter, they have a flat rate and if they do, it is before the meter so it won't count toward the bill.

Nice to see that Perkolator, on Irving Park Road, opened this week, and is open at 6 am. My coffee was delicious, and I'm not just saying that because of the CPS teacher discount!

My wife, son, and I stopped in this morning to grab some coffee and a snack to-go. The shop is quite nice, the 3-4 folks working behind the counter were extremely friendly, if not a *little* bit frazzled because they were somewhat busy at the time (which was great to see). Pastries are all from local places (Delightful Bakery, Fannie Schmoe's and one other that I forget at the moment). The coffee they said is roasted by a private roaster for them. The dark roast was great; my wife had the light roast and liked it and my wife said the white chocolate raspberry scone she got was one of the best scones she's ever had. I'm excited to have another independent coffee shop back in the neighborhood. I liked Regulus and was sad to see them go, but I'm really glad to see the Perkolator team making a go of it. I'll definitely be going back regularly.

  • Looking forward to stopping by after mass at St Pascal tomorrow!

Check Out OLV's After School Programs and Extended Day!

The OLV Difference!
OLV is committed to your child’s future. Not only does OLV have an outstanding curriculum but a wide variety of after school activities that help students prepare for their future. Through these activities our students excel in skills such as leadership, teamwork, compassion, academic, and social abilities to prepare them for their futures.
OLV also offers an Extended Day Program, for both before and after school care. Before care begins at 6:30 AM and after school care is from 3:05 to 6:00 PM.

  • What age would you suggest that we start preparing children for their future -- 8, 15, 21? All the things that you mentioned are preparing children for their future. Everything done from their birth on is preparing them for their future. Let's try to make sure that all those things are good things

  • I'm pretty sure this is just an announcement to let parents know all the programs available at OLV. As always, the parents should be the first educators and decide what is best for their children. It's just nice to know the options. OLV is a great school with many educational and athletic opportunities.

I regularly walk my dog to Dunham park and in the late summer/early fall, have always noticed that there are sometimes people picking up the nuts that fall from some of the trees and collecting them in bags. These are usually older Polish women. I was curious as to what exactly they were collecting and collected a few myself. At first I thought they were chestnuts, and thought , oh cool! I was already looking forward to roasting them and eating them. When I walked to the park this morning with my daughter, I picked up a few more and told her of my intentions to roast and eat them, when she informs me that those were not chestnuts but rather, the fruit of the Ohio Buckeye tree. She had done a tree taxonomy project her freshman year in high school and had actually used those trees in the park to identify for her project. We went home and googled it and apparently they are buckeye nuts which are NOT EDIBLE. As a matter of fact, we did some more research into it and found out that chestnuts grow in clusters, in the same type of greenish-yellow looking pod, but it is far more spiky. The Buckeyes, however, grow one to a pod, and the pod is not as spiky and is more rounded. People often confused them with the chestnut, because they look so similar. I will throw away the nuts I collected but now I feel that the people that I have seen collecting them are getting them confused with chestnuts and I hate to think that people might be getting ill eating these.

  • I used to feed these to the squirrels when I was a kid, they loved them! sure the neighbors didn't like them digging big holes to bury them LOL

  • I do not know this for a fact, but I would guess that collecting any nuts, flowers, etc. would be against Park District regulations. Leave the nuts for the wildlife.

She went on a rant about all kinds of stuff and pointed me to the website thetruthaboutjohnarena in my post. So I checked it out and just wondering if anyone else has. I took it to be people who don't like Arena making up a bunch of stuff but I also wouldn't know whether or any of it is true or not. I hope not! I did see in the FAQ's they say they stand by everything on the website so they're not worried about being sued. Regardless, my hope is that it's all nonsense but does anyone know if any of the stuff on there is true?

I saw this website prior to the first round of voting in 2011. Given that the phone call to the CPD was a mainstay, I surmised that it was put up by one of the political operatives for the regular democrats. They had slated a woman candidate after all. Four years later some robocalls regarding the same issue were placed right after they selected another woman candidate.

Historically the intramural fights between progressive and regular democrats have been nasty affairs.

Northeastern to strong arm residents

I opened the small newspaper for the area that gets thrown on my doorstep. On the front page is a story about how Northeastern is going to initiate eminent domain to seize homes of 6 residents that do not want to move. That way they can build dorms. I appreciate the expansion but it's wrong to allow someone to try and strong arm residents from a property they own. I wouldn't want someone to force me out of my home. So I am curious what people think.

You want a developmental optometrist. An opthalmogist will look at the physical health of the eye but the developmental optometrist will look at the function and any processing issues. There's a place on the south side that is amazing but I'm using this from the app and have the info on my work computer. I'll post later on.

some people do a day, but most do a weekend or a couple days, put good prices to sell through from the start, this way you are not putting out the same stuff out year after year. keep in mind most stores have 50 and 75% off sales so go lower on prices than that unless the stuff is like super mint or rare. the disadvantage is you need to have the right person looking at it to buy it at your specific garage sale on your specific day and you don't always get that. but you might just get someone to take a gamble and buy it for someone else if the price is right. remember people that shop garage sales are looking for a bargain, cheaper than clearance stuff at stores.

think of it this way with some of the items, you had them, used them and now don't need them, the price you paid is like you rented them, got your use out of them now you just want to get rid of them and make something. remember if you don't want them there is a chance that someone will want them if they got a deal. I have been to some garage sales and see things that I can get at a store on clearance and new for less.

I went to a garage sale once and there was this heavy duty solid rusty heavy crowbar, I asked how much and the guy said $40, I told him I would give him $20 for it. he said well, it's pretty old... no $40 or no deal... I bet he still has it.

give a discount if they buy more things, like if you buy 5 things, you get 10% off. all things that would get them to buy more. get rid of the stuff.

remember you are not only selling items, but there is a value to the space you will have with the stuff you don't have to deal with anymore (think of what you would pay to have the space and not having to think of all these items in the back of your head)

for those scrap 1 and 2 dollar retail items that you want to get rid of take a bin and put them in there and say that they can grab one of those items free with a $10 or more purchase, another way to get rid of more rinky dink stuff.

Concrete Stair Repair Recommendations?

The concrete stairs in front of my bungalow that lead to the front door started to crumble towards the sides on a few of the steps and i am hoping to have them repaired before the winter hits and hopefully in such a way that shoveling and salting them doesn't make them crumble again.

Does anyone have any recommendations for anyone that could help fix our stairs?

  • A&K

I don't like vinyl patches on stairs because it gets dirty. Sure, it may seal but so will water stop. That is why your stairs cracked in the first place. Water gets in, freezes, then expands. Keep the water out and you will be all set.

As another post mentioned you may have some settling under the steps. That concrete is poured as one piece. Monolithic pour. So even if you have a void below it will still hold. Just keep your car off of it. Being stairs I hope that it's not your parking spot. No weight means leave it alone. Seal the joints anywhere water may get in.

Also you mentioned tuck pointing. Maybe consider having them patched. The reason is left untreated they could get worse quickly as the seasons change. The same applies. Water gets in, freezes at night. Bad combo. It's much cheaper to have the joints cleaned out and patched. Maybe $100 or less. We just had ours patched, our Tuckpointer color matched our mortar joints and repaired all the cracks on the house. It was $150. He spent several hours doing it and was worth every penny. $100 a year gives you more time before the entire house must be done. Especially around your front steps.

@A&K Agree with you on vinyl patches. Also, they always seem to be especially vulnerable to freeze/thaw damage. In my case I let the steps deteriorate until the corners of the treads were breaking off, taking some riser as well. These I then filled with sakrete behind planks cut the riser height and stabilized with bricks stacked in front of them. There was a learning curve. Which I chipped out the following summer. The second batch was smooth and firm and lasted about 10 years with no need for any seam sealing/covering. Then I came by enough money to have the steps totally removed and repoured.

The original deterioration in bungalows seems always to happen where concrete meets the side brick. (Absent damage caused by something like a heavy furniture dolly banging up/down the steps) I'm thinking the preventative effort should be focused on assuring a tight motar bond between the brick and cement treads.

Burglaries and home invasions are a numbers game for the bad guys. They know they have to go out and hit a certain number of homes every day to keep cash in their pockets. They check out your home for occupational hazards like surveillance cameras and alarms systems, indications of who may be at home, and the economic level of the household. In the sense that you may not have installed an alarm system, or don't have cameras up, or you don't have lights on timers set to give the impression that someone is home, you have have selected yourself as a potential victim. These guys get a lot of practice at sizing up homes, and sizing up occupants, and they get away with many more crimes than they ever stand trial for. A term in prison is continuing education for them.

Burglars know that even with an immediate alarm, police response time is at BEST 5-8 minutes unless you are lucky enough to have the beat car already on your block. Burglars can be in and out long before the police can respond to that alarm or 911 call.

While you cannot say that you could make it impossible for a burglar to rob your home, you can certainly increase the risks enough that the bad guys will simply choose to go to another house that presents less risk. Unfortunately this means that the crime is simply displaced, but the personal benefit is that you are now sympathizing with your neighbor over his misfortune rather than filing police reports and insurance claims for your own losses.

As for answering the front door, the strategy is simple: DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR. Unless you can positively identify that person at the door as someone you would welcome in your home, keep the door locked. Peepholes and windows are there for you to be able to see who is knocking at the door. Talk to them through the door if you must. Call 911 for them if they need help, but DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR.

For the second year in a row, the Portage Park brewery used donated hops grown in the ward to brew a special batch of 45th Ward Fresh-Hopped Beer, Bautz said.

"It has become a tradition," Bautz said. "It is a great collaboration with the neighborhood." The beer uses a mixture of Cascade, Columbus, Centennial, Chinook and Nugget hops grown in the 45th Ward.

The beer will be unveiled at a party from 6-10 p.m. Thursday at the Gale Street Inn restaurant, 4914 W. Milwaukee Ave.

The 45th Ward pale ale will be available on tap at the Gale Street Inn in Jefferson Park, Hops and Barleys in Portage Park, the Garage Bar in Gladstone Park, Rabbit's Bar and Grill in Forest Glen and the Phoenix bar, just down the street from the brewery in Portage Park."

Found Dog on 9/3/14

Hello everyone! This is my first time posting on EveryBlock. I'm hoping to find the owner of a dog that was found on 9/3/14 by Belmont and Long in the Belmont Cragin area. It is a male German Shepard who is not neutered. If you or anyone else you know may have lost their German Shepard, please contact me. I hope to reunite him with his family! We have housed him for the past week and may not be able to keep him much longer. I'm not sure if we will turn him into Animal Care & Control, I honestly want to avoid doing that. Any leads will be helpful! Thanks in advance!

From thread below: "Pippa the German Shepherd is still missing! Female, 65lbs, Black and Tan, 4yrs old. Last seen near Portage Park area Monday 9/15. Please help me get her home safe and sound. Any info call 310-403-1553 or email abbesilverman@hotmail.com

Found dog Menard/Irving Park

Last night (9/13) I saw two loose dogs on the run (not together, but at the same time) around Irving and Menard.

One was a German Shepherd, but she evaded me. I ran after her for quite a bit till I came across another dog, this one small and maybe a chihuahua mix. She seems older. Black and white, long-hair.

Approximate time: 9:45 p.m.

If anyone recognizes this little dog, contact me please. She is safe and sound right now,...

As for the German Shepherd, I saw a post about her on Craigslist (link below). As far as I know the owners have not found her. Her name is Pippa. So please be on the look out for her as well.

The dog in the above photo has been reunited with her owner.

My girlfriend and I could not keep her for more than Friday night into Saturday morning because we so-happened to be taking in a sick foster dog that morning. When we went to pick up our foster at the vet, we dropped the found dog off. The local rescue Bow Wow Revolution paid for the found dog to get a rabies vaccination and indefinite boarding until a foster situation could be figured out.

Luckily, the owner of the dog contacted me Saturday afternoon and he was able to be reunited with his little companion. A happy ending to the story.

I still worry about Pippa the German Shepherd and hope she finds her way back home. I of course am still keeping my eyes out for her when I walk my own dog. My hope is someone was able to find Pippa and just hasn't known where to look to find the owners.

I also keep checking with Animal Care to make sure she didn't get dropped off over there on stray-hold.

For example, there was this girl just brought in:

I'm not sure it's the same dog though.

Little Intruders in my home

Sorry I didnt know what to put this topic under
So my house has a visitor aka a mouse. I am wondering if other residents in Jefferson Park are having the same problem. I know a few weeks ago we had a huge mouse come in but that was because we had the basement back door open for fresh air (so much for fresh air) for a short period of time. If you can tell me if you have had these problems recently or in the past and tips to remove them. Thanks!

And Ill be searching my home for any new entry ways as well.

  • My Great Aunt had a really bad mouse problem a few years ago. She had an old and sickly cat that didn't chase after the mice. But a few months into her mouse infestation she took in an alley cat that turned out to be pregnant. After those new kittens arrived the mice vanished. She kept 2 kittens and the rest were adopted. She has had no mice problems since the kittens.

  • Janet Baker ISON over France (squint!)

@psmokeyz, that video was several years old, and ended that the product had been discontinued for a better version. Do you know anything about it?

model rocket launch site?

Weird question, I know... but my son got a model rocket as a gift, and my inner geek is dying to go try it out this weekend (I'm definitely more excited than he is). However, I would imagine that you can't just go to the park and light a hobby rocket. Am I wrong?

I know there is a model plane flying site over by Schiller Woods. I'm wondering if any of you have ever seen or know of a similar site for model rockets. I'd set it off in our back yard, but even closing our garage door loudly sets our neighbor's old dog into a panic. Plus, this model is reusable, and I don't want to have to go searching through alleys and spying in backyards to retrieve it.

Any info is much appreciated!

  • I fail to see the distinction between a model rocket and fireworks. Given the utter disregard by the CPD for the ridiculous amount of fireworks set off in this neighborhood, I'd be highly surprised they would come out for a model rocket. Also, isn't it the common consensus that the police only come if you are dead? I thought they had "bigger fish to fry?" Seems like you might be taking a bigger risk with the Parks Department patrol, over those whom we kind of know don't give a hoot.

  • I was going to suggest the forest preserves near Devon and Central Ave but the Forest Preserve Volunteer Center is there so there are Forest Preserve cars and maintenance crews near by that are often driving through the area.

  • Portage Park Elementary School reviewed by a parent

I wanted to like this school, as it is only a block from our house... But after attending the kindergarten orientation we were very disappointed. The orientation was unorganized and gave no information about the program or school. We didn't get to see the classrooms, or hear about what the daily schedule would be like. The principle was militant and lectured the parents about the importance of attendance, and stated," This is kindergarten, NOT preschool, bring your child even if they are sick! We have a school nurse, we will see if they are really sick or not. " How irresponsible is it to tell people to bring in sick children? And to talk to the parents as if we have no clue if our children are really ill?! Needless to say, we will not be attending this school.

    "real rear wheel"

some can't even say it once

  • I worked closely with Dan for several years back in the day - my first web job in Chicago. Went on his press check for the poetry book he kept trying to hock during that speech. I love him, though he seems to be suppressing his 'crazy poet' nowadays. Also, I've never felt so strongly that I know someone who will one day be mayor.

Possible meter move scam?

I've been wondering how Peoples Gas will schedule this with homeowners, if you have had your meter moved already did they mail you instructions to call and make an appointment?

I ask because yesterday morning two individuals in construction gear rang my bell and asked if I wanted my meter to be moved that day. When I said would need at least 24 hrs notice to move some things and that my husband wants to be present they got a little pushy, suggesting they help me move the items, repeating everything I said to each other...I kept saying tomorrow (today now) would work they wouldn't commit saying they would need to speak with the foreperson on the job site, would I be home all day? They would stop back by to confirm Wednesday...needless to say they didn't stop back by. I don't know. Maybe they were legit? But I just didn't get a great feeling from them. In the past reps from Peoples Gas always had badges, especially if they were going to be entering our home...and I just can't see them scheduling these final moves by going door to door....

If you've had your meter moved outdoors how did they go about scheduling?

If I see these two again I will snap a picture...it was an older (45-55) black man with a younger (28-35) white woman...

Portage Park Elementary School Bracing for $400K in Cuts

Chicago Public Schools officials had expected 1,030 students to enroll at the neighborhood school at 5330 W. Berteau Ave., but only 951 students attended class on Monday, the 10th day of school, which is used to set the school's budget, Ready said.

Chris - never said a proper meal is not a necessity. I am sure many kids do benefit and I'm happy they don't go hungry. My son doesn't eat the "free" breakfast or lunch. And if he did,I wouldn't expect someone else to pay for it because I can afford it. As I mentioned they don't order in advance so the school has to make sure they have enough for all. Seems wasteful. And on the admin end, I STILL had to complete the form for processing disclosing my income, etc.

  • Bill the Engineer Maker. Fixer. Lifetime ChicagoNWside

Tricia.... why in the world does CPS need to know your income if you essentially are opting your child out of the government meal program?

    Sounds unnecessarily intrusive....

Unfortunate Event

My father was riding his bike on Tuesday Sept. 2nd,2014 around 6:30 pm and was hit by a car. It was at the intersection of austin and lawerence. He was thrown from his bike, and left on the road. The car fled, and no one helped him. All he knows is that it was a black car. He is now in the hospital with a broken leg and staples on his head. He just had surgery today. I hope someome saw something, because this is horrific. I had more faith in my neighborhood to help someone in need.

  • CJ, How is he doing now?

  • Thanks for asking. He is recovering slowly. 52 staples!! Still no word on who did it. I asked local businesses and checked the few surveillances they had, no luck. He's getting there slowly but surely.

Sears won't survive past 2016?

Here is an excerpt from yesterday's article in Crain's Chicago

Fitch Ratings today downgraded Sears Holdings Corp.'s credit rating to CC from CCC, a move driven by the retailer's continuing decline in profitability and the rate at which it's burning through cash. The agency warned that Sears may not have enough funding to support operations beyond 2016.

If Sears goes down, what will happen to Six Corners? I don't love the big ugly building and rarely shop at Sears, but it'll be exponentially worse if the store closes.

More shootings close to home

While not quite Portage Park, its still pretty close to home. this is the stuff spilling over into our neighborhood that i speak out against all the time. (what I referred to in the post about the increase in Gang activity in the area, specifically Hispanic gangs). Its becoming a serious problem around here with the shootings. The one last week at Laramie, now this.

  • LadyLord Portage Park citizen

@CiscoC, that's why I think they need our funding. Regardless of the controversy surrounding the former CeaseFire director, the program works. Here, see the results of a study that found the program's approach "promising:"
    https://www.crimesolutions.gov/ProgramDetails.aspx?ID=205
Also, if you have the time and inclination, watch the documentary "The Interrupters," which showcases the invaluable work this organization does. And try to keep an open mind - as productive and effective as complaining about gangs and parenting on EB is, it's possible it's even more effective to interrupt violence where it happens.

  • Trust me. As a social worker I know what you mean about being more productive. But I also know about the lack of availability of mental health assistance as well as recreational activities for low income families. Great resource on the interrupters. I am familiar with it. I also like the fact that you are providing links and insight. Most people on EB don't take the time to be a good neighbor and share actual knowledge.. Thanks ladylord
