Copernicus re Complete Streets Project

Q: The Milwaukee Av CSP is intended to make Milw safer for pedestrians, motorists and bicyclists. Under consideration for the project is the removal of 1 lane of traffic in each direction. How can this project best achieve its goal?

Garrido: "So, I live in GP. So this project would definitely directly impact my neighborhood and our community. When we heard that one of the possibilities was to remove a lane of traffic from Milw Av, we knew immediately that that's something we didn't want to do in our community & we didn't want to wait and sit on the sidelines because we know we learned from the past that once city gov't comes & says "Here's the project", it's very, very difficult to undo. So I initiated, I drafted, a petition, myself together with members of the community & the GPCC, we passed that petition & we gathered 4,000 signatures from people from the GP community and beyond that said "we don't want to remove a lane of traffic". We support the CSP, Milw Av needs it, it's a mess, absolutely, we want everything that comes with it, bumpouts, medians in the center, we want all of that but we do not want to remove a lane of traffic. And,he fought us all the way, every single time we tried to talk to him about it, he didn't want to sit down, he didn't want to meet. So thankfully, because of our petition, we were successful and they took out the possibility of the protected bike lanes, but on the table is still unless he's saying now, here today, that they are not going to remove a lane of traffic, that would be great."

Now, after Mr Garrido's response, do you know if answered the question: How
can this project best achieve its goal (safety for all)?

What does John Garrido say?
so I initated, I drafted, a petition
We want bumpouts, we want medians, We support Complete Streets

Acknowledge the question then pivot? Done.
Anybody have a clarity on this question? No
Mission accomplished.

  • if he didn't pay to use the song, it's copyright infringement. any lawyer should know this. the visual content was poorly executed. clearly, this is intended for those that have questionable ethics.

  • Don't worry, John Garrido will just say "I absolutely believe that it's not illegal..." like he told Duane Placko about the vote buying charge. In JG's world, ignorance of the law is an excuse.

John Garrido is Following His Own Tea Party Election Strategy

John Garrido (candidate for 45th Ward Alderman) says Tea Party candidates like himself need to hide as "Independents" in order to get elected in Chicago:

http://www.chicagotalks.org/2011/01/an-examination-of-the-tea-party-movement/

Branded as extremists, crazies and “tea baggers,” many individuals affiliated with the party believe the movement would stand a better chance if deemed something else. The heavily rooted negative connotations that accompany the Tea Party has undeniably affected its progress.

“In order to go in and actually win races, we’re going to have to run candidates who appeal to all voters. It has to be more of an independent thing,” said Garrido.

I have the worst tooth ache I've ever experienced.. this tooth (back molar "first molar") is giving me an unbearable headache. (I think the molar is infected... I was told it needed to have a root canal when I went to Dental Dreams a few months back... but I refused the root canal because it was so expensive... and decided to wait and see.... well now I realize I should have had the darn molar pulled back then.... I just didn't want to then because I'm in my early 20s and was scared off of extracting the tooth by my dentist... who said that if I pull it. There would be a gap.. and my teeth would all shift and then they will all start getting weaker and sooner or later I'd be young and missing a lot of teeth...)

I called Precision Dental on Diversey... and they estimated on the phone that an extraction would be about $200-300 for new patients... I need something more reasonable... like less than $100 or a place that accepts the medical card (which I just received in the mail a little while ago)

Any recommendations?
Thanks!

Speaking from experience, your dentist sounds right about the shifting. I had a tooth die and fall out in college bc my parents couldn't afford a root canal. Over the many years, my teeth around that gap began to shift to fill the gap, bc there was no counteracting force to keep them in line. I now have a bridge there, which has fixed the problem (but obv was not cheap either).

Good luck. My dentist is way down by midway and isn't open Sunday's so I can't help there...sorry!

Talk about pandering

Well that's enough of me talking about me, I will stop and let you talk about me.

And silly me I thought the two mailers a day that have been stuffed into my mail box everyday. Funny thing is not one of the mailers touts any single positive thing that has been brought into the ward, only finger pointing and name calling.

Well PAC, we don't have 4 years to let him prove himself. Chuy needs to hit the ground running with a solid plan in place in order to be effective, but he's already laying excuses on us that Rahm won't share the information. Rahm is not the gatekeeper of the books. They're public records, and with a little effort, any citizen should be able to access them. Any one of the aldermen/women who were presented with the budget and voted on it should have that document, as well as reports for the actual spending against that budget. Look at Finance Committee meeting minutes! Any voter who would buy this lame excuse is just a fool. Chuy sells himself as a consensus builder, so why doesn't "Mr Consensus" have access to this info?
Let's give the guy who's already improving the city's financial position the opportunity to continue to root out waste and bring business investment to Chicago. He's a "hard a**" who is the perfect personality type needed to turn this 20+ year old financial mess around. I don't want another whiner who's already hiding behind lame excuses before he's even elected!

Frustrated

Does anyone know what is going on with the eyesore at central and Irving(the Mexican restaurant)?Ever since the fire over a year ago they started construction and there it sits still abanded, not only the restaurant but the whole corner. It looks horrible. I wasn't really that concerned until yesterday when I was driving west on Irving and noticed the old bowling alley was going to be a dollar store and then 3 blocks west a tobacco shop, are you kidding me? Enough is enough.

  • Who asked you?

  • Mike, I will call the owner tomorrow and will post an update on his progress as soon as I hear back from him. He also owns the large buildings on the S.E. Corners of Irving and Menard and Irving and Meade.

My issue with Sposato is the lack of progress in 36 but somehow was elected in 38. I never wanted him in the first place. Now he is here and I can only imagine he will do the same thing he did in 36. Which appears to be nothing. So yeah, I am going to be extra hard on him.

    Bob,

I find myself using snark when I deal with the disingenuous.

"Free" parking isn't free. If it's on private land as part of the parking minimums requied by zoning then the land cost, the maintenance cost, and the lost opportunity cost gets rolled into the cost of the store which gets to be part of the overhead which gets rolled into the retail price. People who use other modes then are subsidizing drivers convenience.

"Free" On Street parking similarly has costs that people who use other modes pay for.

Neither paragraph above even deals with the societal costs of choosing the convenience of driving over other modes: pollution and collision costs, for example.

As you continue insulting women and making ad hominem attacks on the JPNA FB page and continue to blow the dog-whistle of racial and ethnic animus here in your quest for Garrido votes, I don't want to be friends with you. Friendship requires trust.

I think that is a really good cop

So if IU had taken the bus home from work last night he could have reported this from ground level.

I think this is the Sgt that actually used to stop people who ran stop signs and that the rowdy young folks and older rowdies knew at well so not sure why she is having to work nights but maybe she likes sleeping days or that is a career move. My experiance though is the Krats have no knowledge of what goes on at night and one gets stuck there if doing a job in a way that causes waves.

Downtown Jefferson Park

I cross posted this on the JPNA facebook site, but wanted input here. What would you like to see in downtown Jefferson Park? It could be anything - stores, restaurants, residential, parks, bike lanes, anything. Downtown is ill defined but for this purpose let's assume it centers around Milwaukee and Lawrence and extends east to the Kennedy Expressway, west to Central Avenue, north to the Metra bridge on Milwaukee and south to Wilson Park. Any ideas?

  • Here's a nice short video about walkability to consider for downtown JP:
    https://vimeo.com/87082709

  • I think that Bob Bank's library idea would only be appropriate when there is an adequate tax base from the downtown Jefferson Park and surrounding area.

We already know that Bob's cherished suburban-like-living costs more to maintain then does a more urban form, and it brings in fewer tax dollars. http://www.vox.com/2015/3/26/8291889/suburban-sprawl-economy...

We know that on-streeet parking is underpriced, and that motorists don't pay the full road costs, but take more than their fair allotment of the public space.

We know and have discussed that the millennials, burdened with school debt, want to move to a place where they don't need to own a car. We know companies are starting to follow them into this urban development, non-car-ownership model.

We need to address these issues sooner rather than later instead of continuing to pamper ourselves with a lifestyle of maximum convenience.

    Remember to plan first.

Wondering though if our plans to become a theatre and arts district are viewed by Rham as bumping stomachs with his Ravenswood, Uptown, Lakeview plans that seem to me to be a grab for extending the real estate values of the Gold Coast.

https://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20150327/uptown/mayor-rahm-emanuel-says-hes-not-all-talk-on-uptown-music-district-vision

For myself, if I did not have family duties to attend to in Houston, I would simply find a way to isolate or cocoon myself here. Or maybe just plan some retreats to Lake Geneva or Puerta Vallerta to avoid the crowds.

To be clear though I do think a vote for Garrido is a vote do nothing me first thinking by people afraid of change, cops and people who know cops so think they will have a secondary connection.

Me, Arena has no reason to listen to me or to IU, Real Kenji or fake Kenji or any of the rest of us but he does. And I am sure he gets tired of hearing our wishes for Cadillac solutions when we give him a Dodge Dart budget. He does listen though then goes and sit though all that boring s*&^ of all the other reps propeled by their own me first constituents. Times are changing though and soon our own me first clammer may well be can we listen to each other and navigate change without running each other down on Milwaukee.

I think there is room here for Rham's vision over there and our vision up around here.

A cop that will not listen and only pays attention to business owners is not likely to listen to any of us though I sort of feel like he would want to I just do not think it is in his makeup.

  • A comment from "...cops and people who know cops so think they will have a secondary connection." from the Secondcitycop blog:

Or Garrido that has not proven effective even in the lawsuits he filed. He is a lawyer and didn't even win his case. You want him as the alderman? No thanks. Is John Arena perfect? Through them, my family learned of Quest Theatre Ensemble, another amazing organization, and their community giveback. As a matter of fact, the two organizations share some common members.

If you have ever wondered but could not take out your family to a quality free show, here is your opportunity:

"Join Quest for the world premiere musical, Tomato Queen! Journey with Camina as she tries to discover the secret to growing a perfect tomato--a feat that could earn her a crown! Cheer on Camina and her new friend Dormouse as they battle homesickness, a humongous Hornworm, and an Evil Scientist bent on destruction. Tomato Queen features live music and Quest's signature large-scale puppetry." http://questensemble.org/index.php

  • Minerva* Performing Schools. Performing Communities.

Saw the performance last night with my family. A good number of children, even of preschool age, were present in the audience. The performance was professionally prepared and executed for mere donations! This is a great community outreach, indeed. Thank you, Quest!

Imagine standing in your back yard and you look up, and 48 windows are looking back at you?

Imagine standing in your back yard and you look up, and 48 windows are looking back at you from the 48 unit apartment building at the end of you block. How will you feel laying out to get some sun, or your kids playing in the splash pool? Never going to happen on your block, maybe not, but would you wish that on anybody? John Arena loves density, and if there is an empty lot or tired old commercial building, a closed church nearby, you are extremely vulnerable. Our old alderman's "spot zoning" was bad enough, but Arena is bad up-zoning on steroids. Before you vote, ask yourself, COULD YOU BE NEXT?

Say hello to your candidate, Garrido the panderer.

  • Bob,
Pretty much all I've read of your writing is a waste of time.
You're the one who couldn't even follow the minimum rules on the JPNA FB page and had your comments removed as they were ad hominem attacks.

About the show:
Inspired by last year's relentless Chicago winter (and let's face it, the one currently drawing to a close hasn't been so great either), Duplicity Ensemble combines two of Shakespeare's greatest plays to create the ultimate antidote for cabin fever at Filament Theatre. When four young lovers chance upon into a quiet mountain cabin while looking for shelter from a snowstorm, life is turned upside-down as hearts get broken, muffins get eaten and a play is read in this modern comic mash-up of The Winter's Tale and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Once everything has been spun backwards, can it be set right again?

Performed at Filament Theatre, A Midwinter Night's Tale runs ~ 90 minutes.

Sirens and someone screaming at sunnyside and merrimac/mobile

Tonight we heard a firetruck and ambulance fly down our street. When we went out to see what was going on, we heard a blood curdling scream. We didnt hear any information on the police radio. Does anyone else know anything about this?

Fred I have been non-union and am now union. Sometimes I get stuck going to a non-union jobs. The difference is night and day. The last big non-union job I had to work on was junk. Two weeks prior someone died due to improper safety requirements. The workmanship was the worst I have ever seen, and the jobsite was a disaster. It was very similar when I worked non-union. Build it cheap, pocket what they could at the expense of labor and quality. Everyone seems to want to blame unions without truly understanding the good that is created by having them around. A few misguided people ruin it for the rest of us.

The last big union job was downtown. Northwestern memorial hospital. Zero injuries, zero deaths. Organized jobsite, large safety team and a building that will last longer than I will be alive. We build what we are required to build. You want cheap? We can do that. Although, we suggest you don't.

Btw unions built many buildings downtown you enjoy to this day.

    Bob-

In the future if you have an issue that will be decided at the ward level, than please only post it to the ward thread. Posting in multiple places weakens your argument and invites confusion.

    Thanks

Question: "One of the most hotly debated issues in the ward over the past year has been the proposed 48 unit apartment building at Long & Argyle near the Jefferson Park Metra station. In letters distributed in the neighborhood, Ald Arena charged that his opponent, John Garrido, has made the issue political. Meanwhile, John Garrido has criticized Ald Arena's zoning review process. Will each candidate please elaborate and discuss his vision for the site?

Garrido: "So the letter says I made it political. The residents of thatcommunity found out about the project when it was leaked out in the Nadig newspaper, they didn't find out about it from the Alderman. The Alderman himself admitted that he was aware that there were proposals coming in as much as a year before it finally came out in the Nadig newspaper. 1,500 people signed a petition against this project, that's why it got tabled not because of any other reason. He states in his letter that he had a zoning meeting, one of his secret zoning meetings, that nobody's really quite sure who's on the board and when they happen. So, these are the reasons why people get aggravated. I'm not making this political, I had nothing to do with passing that petition around to get those signatures. It's just another example of how he doesn't really, ..
he says that he includes the community but he really doesn't include the community. The community finds out about these projects either being leaked out or they start to, where people start getting signatures on petitions and then finally, maybe he'll have a community meeting, maybe. There still hasn't been a community meeting about this. So the difference is that when I'm in office I will put any proposal, immediately make it available to the community within the first 24 hours. And that's so everybody knows about it. ....
