Local Furniture Business

My husband is launching a furniture making business. He has done millwork and carpentry for almost 15 years and creates beautiful pieces. Our niche is mid-century modern and vinyl record storage, but he'll also make dining tables, credenzas and mantle pieces. He can work with architectural drawings or just some sketches. Please take a look and let us know if there's something we can help with! http://brokenpressdesign.com/

Legno...Best Restaurant in the Area??

Let's just say it's in my top 3. My wife and I stopped by for a last minute dinner date on Saturday Night and it ended up being one of the best nights we have had in a while. The atmosphere is nice, quiet and welcoming in the back and up front its more up beat in the bar area.

The food was legitimately amazing Italian fare. The waiter knew every detail of the menu items. The bartender is an expert mixologist. The host was very nice and accommodating....and the live entertainment, Stolie, was awesome. She'll be back April 25th, I highly recommend stopping in for the night...We will be there!!!!

My kids are a little older, Pre-teen. Had no idea what to expect and didn't want to walk in the door and walk right out. we live near by and have been curios to check it out.
    Thanks!!

went there once with a friend. had a glass of wine. place was empty on a friday night. very nice and clean place. best restaurant in the area??? if you are asking the question, i would answer no. gale street, sabatinos and porettas are all really good. talked to 3 friends who have eaten at legno and none were impressed. they have only been open for a month, so lets give it some time, before you give it a shot at the title.

Ok so this is not the first time this happens. Last night I came home and I was helping my pregnant wife unload groceries from our car in front of our house. The next thing I know there's 2 cars chasing each other heading north on McVicker from Irving Park. So I immediately pulled her back from the street. As they fly past us I yell at them to slow down. A minute later here they come again!!! They turned on Mcvicker flying down the street, they do not slow down getting to Bell Plaine instead they just go faster. Finally when they get to Berteau they stop at that stop sign!!!! So they do not make a stop until 2 full long blocks later (on Mcvicker from Irving Pk. all the way to Bertau). Cars that are on Belle Plaine turning north on Mcvicker do not have a stop sign either. So guess what I'm trying to ask here is does anyone know how to get some stop signs or speed humps on Mcvicker and Bell Plaine? We moved into this beautiful neighborhood in 2009 from the "ghetto" there when cars used to come flying down the street like that, people used to throw bottles at them and break their windows to teach them a lesson. I would hate for this to ever happen in Portage Park. Summer is coming and kids will be kids, they will run across the street without looking and I would hate for a tragedy to ever happen to any my neighbors just because of a negligent driver(s).......

The weather is getting warmer (minus the past 2 days) and they are all starting to come out of the wood work. Actually just this past Saturday I was outside kicking a ball around with my son and this teenage girl I see fly out of an alley down Meade for about 6 blocks straight and pass through without any hesitation. Let me tell you that's about 5 stop signs right there. Daylight. Early afternoon. I have drilled in my 4 year old's head that he is not to go anywhere near the street and not even the curb without me. I realize im raising him in a different age where entitlement is at its finest. I remember when I was a kid (it wasn't that long ago!) that if u ran out in the street without looking it was YOUR fault. Your parents would come outside and find out what YOU did wrong and not the driver. Not to say drivers are off the hook in anyway but the enforcement is just not there anymore. So we have to teach preventive measures to children and be on the defense when driving. I dont feel its just about how u drive anymore but more so of paying attention to everything else around u.

Putting a stop to doorstep litter? (RedPlum & Yellow Pages)

I am getting really tired of seeing these Tribune/RedPlum coupon newspaper things showing up at my house and every other house in the neighborhood, only to either build up on doorsteps or be taken directly to the recycle bin (at our house anyway; maybe others don't even recycle them). I believe that there are ways to opt out of receiving these things, but, by and large, it seems that most people have no desire to receive them. This is a huge waste of paper and an eyesore in all neighborhoods across Chicago as they sit out. I personally think that people should have to opt-in to receive these sorts of things not go through time consuming steps to *try* and opt-out of receiving them.

How is it that this sort of unsolicited material that arrives at our homes only to be thrown out is allowed? Why does the city not consider this to be littering or some other violation?

I hardly know anyone that uses a phonebook these days, yet they arrive on our doorsteps only to sit there for weeks/months rotting in the rain, until they are finally all picked up and disposed of. The Tribune/RedPlum papers may not sit out for as long as phone books usually do, but they arrive a couple times a week and I am getting really tired of picking them up.

Can't we get these things to stop? I know that there was a law suit filed over the RedPlum papers last summer; not sure how that ended up though, if it has even been resolved yet... http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/20318975-418/residents-sue-chicago-tribune-over-nuisance-coupons.html

Mycorrhizal fungi for a tree

That is, I am looking for mycorrhizal fungi for a bare root tree I am planting.

I thought I had it but apparently no. And a bare root fruit tree arrived today in the mail. I need to plant it tomorrow or in the next 2 days, I don't want to wait any longer than that.

Previously I bought the mycorrhizal fungi online. Given the time constriction I need to find it here in Chicago.

Hence a question to my dear neighbors: is there a local store that carries mycorrhizal fungi for planting bare root trees?

Help will be appreciated very much. (Maybe even in fruit, if the tree survives and grows some :))

Thank you for help!

Patio closing

Hi everyone, I'm writing a story about the Patio closing its doors. I would really like to talk to some neighborhood folks about the theatre. What they loved about it, what the absence will mean, etc.

Should Both the Portage and Patio go to Pot?

Check out this story at DNAInfo about the Patio Theater: http://dnain.fo/1jIwlEZ

If you read nothing else in the article take note of this:

"Carranza's track record at the Portage, which he abruptly shut down 11 months ago, and the Congress, which was shuttered after city officials yanked Carranza's liquor license and declared it unsafe because of building code violations."

Is this the type of business owner we want in our community?

  • Since the 16th District leads the city in the number of arrests for possession of pot, maybe we should let the two theaters go to pot. Drop in, light up, get mellow. Peace now. Just remember, don't bogart that joint my friend, pass it over to me.

  • It could just be we have more vigorous enforcement not more users.

60641 mail delivery to be discussed at OIPA meeting tomorrow

From their email :

-a rep from Cong. Quigley's office will speak at our OIPA meeting tomorrow about what's going on to fix the abysmal mail delivery in 60641. He will also compile concerns about the Cicero Ave. Irving Park post office.

Monday, April 14, 7 PM, Irving Park Baptist Church, 4401 W. Irving Park at Kostner. Free, all welcome. Hope to see you there!

  • I also submitted my information about the mail service in 60634. Ours does not sound like it was any better than 60641, and since I am in Mike Quigley's (5th Dist) district, my issues should be forwarded on as well. We will see what happens. (I fear just more lip service)

  • Update: Just got the phone with Cody. As stated, he is just the messenger, but I was able to give him the experience (And tracking numbers and dates) of the poor mail service in 60634. I encourage others to do so as well (he told me 60634 came in second to 60641 (so with as bad as ours was, if yours was worse, wow!)).

My input is provided to give background on the lead up to this point in the zoning review process I follow. http://ward45.org/land-use/zoning/zoning-ammendments/.

At this time the plans consist of the renderings and site plan. Detail floor plans are not drawn up yet since the project is still in formation.

$1100 - 1200 is the going rate for 2/2 units in Jefferson/Portage/Gladstone. The market will drive the rents.

The developer is building with condo-standards in mind. The overall market approach at this time is rentals for the next 5 years and as the market comes back convert to condos. Granite counters and stainless appliances. According to the developer these units will have laundry within.

I do support a 10-20% affordable mix in local development. That is consistent with CHA 5-yr plan for units near transit.

ALCO (and others) are doing single lot redevelopment and I support this type of soft-gentrification. It keeps the neighborhood SFH standard we all love. But location matters. As I said above if this proposal was not located at this site it would not have been considered. A one size fits all development approach is not what I subscribe to. I have been open about that throughout my public life.

The economics on a single lot verses this aggregated site are not comparable. This developer has brought this project for consideration. I have brought it forward because I think it has merit to help achieve the economic development goals that the vast majority of residents have expressed for Jefferson Park, "Bring businesses here." Density has to be considered while we strive to maintain our great quality of life. Balancing these interests is my goal.

Hope this helps and as always I look forward to further discussion.

The "deep flavors" are do the the quality of the ingredients and their complexity of their interaction which take a couple of days to come into their own for peak flavor. It will get even better ... you'll see. Report back in a coupe of days and you re-taste the chili. Surely you didn't eat it all. I devised this recipe deliberately to be specifically light on cumin. Many a recipe is heavier on cumin, a taste that people associate with chili. Cumin goes a long way. If too much is used, the subtlety of other flavors get masked by the cumin. I figure if someone wants more they can add a little more to their individual bowl. As concerns clumps, I just use a spatula as the meat browns to break up the meat, but to each his own..

Most of the trees that are coming down are infected with the emerald ash borer, an invasive bug that eats the tree from the inside out. Almost every ash tree in the area is infected. And even if a tree looks well, the ash borer is likely killing the tree and creating a hazard.

It is going to take years for us to work through the devastation caused by this insect.

The good news is that the city is beginning to plant trees again. If you would like a tree, please email us. Please note, we cannot guarantee a specific type of tree.

Gardening Community?

Hi All,

Fairly new to everyblock, first time homeowner and new to gardening.

Id love to get connected with the local gardening communities if it exists. Can anyone recommend any clubs, websites, blogs like this?

There are a million books, articles, and resources like the extension office to answer specific questions, but I'm looking for something more social.

Kmart at HIP has more groceries now

Just FYI, they put in more food, including fresh and frozen. Looks almost like Target in there. Not sure how prices compare.

  • I was replying to the question about grocery prices at Kmart. Gas prices are also high. $150 a year matters to some, including me. Not sure what your point is about federal subsidies. But the oil companies certainly receive their share of subsidies and tax breaks.

The wife here complains about milk prices too. Then she gets in the car and burns 3 dollars in gas to save a dollar. I have no control.

Higher Property Taxes, Better Schools??

Reading the paper today our Mayor thinks our property taxes are to low compared to the suburbs. Now the decision falls to the City Council (Our Alderman). The only reason I'm still residing in the City of Chicago is because of the low taxes compared to suburbs. Emanuel aides claim that an owner of an $250,000.00 home would pay an additional $58 per year on top of a $4,000.00 property tax bill each of the next five years. For them to even consider this is a complete joke. If this was going for a bump in city services I might consider. What do you all think?

arnie, once the Depression generation passed on I bet that human characteristic has not changed in either direction. Ever.

What has killed retirement savings after the loss of the enforced savings of a traditional company pension has been other employment trends. (1) The viscious rising dominance of the benefitless twin practices of part time work and borderline criminal use of the 'independent contractor' employment designations. These two evils are crushing low and middle income retirement savings potentials by eliminating structural discipline and economies of scale. Consider that when these two practices spread into the lower half of the workforce, wages did not rise. But the cost to employers went down. (2) Failure of real wages to increase to make up for the loss of paid benefits. (3) Rising medical and educational costs will in advance of general cost-of-living inflation.

The Social Security trust fund is officially named the "Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Trust Fund." In 1940 (the year in which "modern" Social Security started), only 54% of males and 60% of females who survived to age 21 would live long enough to receive any benefits at all (other than the burial benefit). Today those numbers are around 75% and 85%.

Another quip -- my grandmother lived during the income tax amendment campaign. She once told me that if people knew then what it would become, there would have been a revolution. The income tax was sold as applying only to the wealthy, and started at 1% for the very well to do. It was a very different time then. My grandparents (an elementary school teacher and salesman) did well in retirement, due to pensions, savings, stocks with dividend payments. Social Security for them was just icing, letting them travel internationally and extensively in retirement.

They also happened to have lived during a unique period, where the United States survived 100% intact following an incredibly destructive war, with massive industrial capacity, and leveraged that into economic dominance and great prosperity. Times change though, and we've been living through that. One facet of people is that we tend to view what we experience as "normal" and don't really conceive of or plan for different times. Look at the income tax, and the implications that has for our form of government. How many people today can conceive of a time where the income tax didn't exist, and the (much much smaller) federal government survived on nothing but excise and other non-direct forms of taxation?

Wedding dress preservation

Can anyone recommend a good place in the area to get a wedding dress preserved?

replace kitchen cabinet doors with wood doors/reface and install countertop

Redoing our place to get it ready to sell. Kitchen cabinets are in good shape, but we want to replace laminate doors with white wood doors/new hardware. Also, we need new Corian-type counters installed. Need recommendations for skilled contractor and best place to get these cabinet doors/counters. Thanks everyone.

Good for you for prepping your home before you sell! I am a realtor and a professional home Stager, and I help my clients do these projects ALL the time! I'll advise that you may find replacing the cabinet doors and hardware is almost as costly as new cabinets all together! So might be wise to price out both options, truly. And Corian is often as expensive as granite! So be careful there too! Vinyl counters might be just fine! Let the new buyer put in the expensive counters!
A lot of my clients have gone to Studio 41. They have a location on Pulaski, south of Belmont approximately. There is always Home depot or Lowes, but they are NOT that affordable as Studio 41 has proven to be. There is also an outlet across the parking lot from Studio 41 that might have what you need for cabinets? Worth checking out anyway. But another idea is to go talk to Sherwin William on Milwaukee in Portage park. I work with SW all the time. They just might have a paint product that can paint over the laminate doors! I have transformed kitchens just by painting and then replacing the hardware. If you need any more advise for prepping your home and or Home Staging, feel free to email me at jbaron@atproperties.com
    Best of luck to you!
