Battery Giant

Nice to have Battery Giant in the neighborhood. Much more than just batteries, they are doing repairs on battery powered equipment too. They replaced photography equipment batteries for me at a fraction of what it usually costs. Stop in and say hello to the owner, Dave Meyer.

President Obama will speak Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 25, at the Copernicus Center, 5216 W. Lawrence Ave. A limited number of tickets for the public will be distributed at 10 am in the lobby of the Copernicus Center on Sunday, Nov. 23.
The White House released the following: On Tuesday, November 25, the President will travel to the Copernicus Community Center in Chicago, Illinois to meet with community leaders and discuss the executive actions he is taking to fix our broken immigration system.
As the President said on Thursday, his Immigration Accountability Executive actions will help secure the border, hold nearly 5 million undocumented immigrants accountable and ensure that everyone plays by the same rules. They will also continue our commitment as Americans to an ideal-- that all of us are created equal, and all of us have the chance to make of our lives what we will.
The President looks forward to speaking to a diverse group of leaders on Tuesday, and to continuing to discuss his actions with communities and Americans across the country. Watch for updates at www.nadignewspapers.com

Polish craftware: anyone remember Baltika: 4754 N Milwaukee?

Baltika was a great Polish (E.European) craft/gift store located at 4754 N Milwaukee Ave., and they moved about 5-6 years ago. Anyone have an idea where they may have relocated or, are there any stores near that sell similar Polish (E.European) crafts / giftwares ? Pottery, jewelry, handmade or imported similar crafts? That store was great! Thanks for any info . . . thanks!

Recommendation for refrigerator repair please

My side by side refrigerator suddenly has become very hot to the touch on the inside between the doors and on the outside corner on the freezer side. If you have a good and reasonably priced refrigerator repair person, would you please recommend? Also does anyone know if this is dangerous in the interim until I can get it repaired?

My front porch is cracking pretty bad and this past winter just killed it. I don't know if it can be repaired of if the whole porch has to come down. The bricks in front of my house are crumbling and turning black. Also the foundation in the front needs to be waterproofed with that black tar. It's not a huge job but it's too much for us to do ourselves.

Any recommendations would be appreciated! I live across the street from Merrimac Park.

Thanks!

Abandoned Van???

What do I do when a van has been parked (abandoned) in front of my house for over a month? I called 311 and they said they would come and look at it but never did. This is not only an eye soar, it is rather suspicious. None of my neighbors know who left it there or who it may belong to. So many leaves have collected around this giant van...what do I do? I'd like to park in front of my own house again at some point.

  • Jan

nothing says "abandoned" like a couple of flat tires... on the street side. just sayin'

  • Awwww, if you *must* flatten tires, don't damage them; just let the air out. If that van is stolen, its owner is going to have enough to deal with, without having to buy new tires.

These Gas Meters Are an Eyesore

Has anyone noticed the new gas meters being installed on side streets in front of multi-unit buildings? They are installing them on the face brick, right in front of the buildings. It looks horrible. There is a beautiful condo building on Roscoe just east of Cicero that now has about 20 meters in front of it, stacked 3 high. It looks horrible. Also, they did the same thing to a building on Laramie, between Addison and Belmont. This should be illegal.

Has anyone received a *credible* response from Peoples Gas re: partially finished sidewalk work?

This is related to the new gas meter installations. Supposedly, my concerns get documented by Peoples Gas, but I'm told that the scheduling of work/the work itself are through contractors. What are we supposed to do when shoveling snow... work around the half-finished cement work, broken pieces of cement and rocks? I'm pretty sure that the trash collectors aren't going to haul away the broken pieces of cement -- and I don't expect them to do so.

Perhaps I'm just being impatient, and it takes longer than I would expect to fix some of these "errors"... it's only been 2+ weeks; maybe that's normal?

As Christmas nears, some summer camp registrations open up, like Chicago Botanic Garden and Camp Invention, as per links below. Some camps provide an incentive for signing up earlier like the opportunity to break up the payment into installments or getting some upfront discount. However, many quality camps are far away from home and we often wonder why?

Some high schools have realized that offering their space for summer camps is a win-win for all the parties involved. Resurrection H.S. offers a hugely attended Camp Invention. DePaul College Prep, previously known as Gordon Tech, offers Green Apple Campus. Whether these schools charge for summer freed-up space or not, the camps can act as their marketing tool and buildup their good neighbor image. The program providers get both transactional and relational rewards. And, the local families benefit in a number of ways, like the nearby location, hopefully the neighborhood-adjusted-cost and get acquainted with the local educational providers.

During my recent conversation with Intrinsic Schools, based on my own experience with the CPS programming and from reading about ACT testing and beyond, I realized that our children are greatly in need of writing workshops, not just a stronger STEAM focus, which rightfully gets lots of attention due to its own merits. Since writing is not being tested on standardized tests, I found that it is not the focal point of the school experience.

I hope that our community leaders will find ways to fill this writing void with companies like 826CHI and will address other well-known educational needs by leveraging their relationships and other resources.

Yes, we in Jeff Park and of JPNA do not want more density which brings more crime and there is no proof of it bringing businesses since where there is density and no wealth there are vacant stores like on Milwaukee south of Montrose. Zoning isn't rocket science but it's not 7th grade math. Sorry, but planned development is, by design, an excuse to ignore local zoning requirements because planned developments typically have a comprehensive plan behind them. The price to pay for petitioning for a zoning change to planned development is greater public scrutiny of the project via legally mandated public hearings for both the zoning change to PD as well as a project review. The benefits of a planned development is greater freedom of design for the project, the drawback is heightened city and public scrutiny over that design.

I've been anxiously awaiting the Grand Opening of the new Habitat Re-Store since I heard about it several months ago. This weekend it FINALLY opened its doors, and I was all too anxious to get in and see what I could find.

First and foremost, if you've been visiting the Re-Store near/in Chinatown, you're in for a treat with this one. It's FAR more organized, and well lit. In fact, they even had the place heated up nice and toasty when we arrived.

The outdoor/ garden section leaves a bit to be desired, but they did have some Audubon bird feeders that are normally $45-$60 for $10. I picked one of those up. I also scored a cute little wrought iron plant stand for $5.

They have some incredibly decent furniture for affordable prices. I saw couches for $20 and some beautiful sitting chairs for about the same.

We are looking to remodel our kitchen, so we had a look at the cabinets and countertops. They were VERY fairly priced, as were their windows and doors.

We just happened upon a PERFECT fireplace grate, which we were in need of for only $4! This is a heavy duty cast iron grate, not some rinky dinky little thing. It was most definitely a steal!

We'll be going back again and again, I'm sure. The selection was fantastic, and included both new AND used items.

For those of you who aren't aware, the items are donated to the Re-Store by individuals and companies that are remodeling or demolishing homes or buildings, or if there is an overstock. I'm sure there are a variety of other circumstances as well. The proceeds made at the restores go toward helping build homes and other needs for community members. It's a great deal as well as a great cause!

  • Open Wednesday through Sunday, 10am to 6pm.

  • TomL Loves, bikes, dogs, Jeff Park and Chicago

    6040 N Pulaski...open Tues-Sun 10-6, and yes, it's got a bit of everything!
Donations are tax-deductible and most welcome (same hours) and give call (773) 539-6040 if you need a pickup of large items.
The ReStore welcomes volunteers to help run the store, clean appliances, schlep furniture, hang lighting items, mix paint, etc!
Contact for that is heather@restorechicago.org...or just drop by! a fun place to volunteer and to "make a difference."

Analysis: dynamics of 45th Ward aldermanic race change with candidacy of Michael Diaz

Garrido, Baert, Diaz vying to unseat Arena in 45th Ward race. Who does the mayor support?
http://nadignewspapers.com/2014/11/18/4-candidate-field-roils-45th-ward-race/

  • Ryan Richter Transportation Planner in Jefferson Park

Stewart went through some interesting acrobats to arrive at his conclusions. Nevertheless, I found it to be a thoughtful piece. I will second the comment that I'd love to see Nadig do a write-up on the candidates. This is a fantastic local story that our local paper should not ignore.

  • Troubled Child

Probably won't see that Ryan for a few reasons. Brian and Glenn sit on all the chambers of commerce around here, sitting with both Garrido and Arena. Right there would be a conflict of interest. Second conflict of interest that could make a newspaper story less than neutral is local candidates spend big dollar amounts advertising in the Nadig Newspapers during the election cycle , so essentially political candidates are clients of the newspaper. Can't have fair journalism that way.

If I am hearing you right you are thinking the dust ups between the progressives and the mayor are costing some of us better city services. I have had this feeling but yet see that we are rocking along nicely and getting more than our share of asphalt. I think we could get more organized on exactly what we want in the next 50 to 100 years in the way of populations and the support services for those populations. Will we have all economic stratas and ages therefore all services from family planning to perpetual care? Will we strive to be one economic strata? Will we seek to have a working class and an owner class? Will we seek renters and owners as we do now? Will we want employees to serve a few economically advantaged? Will we encourage cooperatives?

Has the mayor angered the President so he chose to support the 45th? Certainly if the mayor really had it in for us there would be a doormat ward with a center for ethnic cohesion other than ours he could have offered up.
