Someone taking our recycling

For the last six weeks (three pickups), someone has been waiting until just after the garbage trucks come, going through our recycling for cans, and dumping all the recycling into our now-empty garbage bins. This has been happening down our entire alley. For the last six weeks (three pickups), someone has been waiting until just after the garbage trucks come, going through our recycling for cans, and dumping all the recycling into our now-empty garbage bins. This has been happening down our entire alley. We have a ton of recycling - we have two bins - and whoever goes through has been dumping whatever recycling doesn't fit into the empty bins or on the ground.

This is very frustrating for us, because we take recycling seriously. We normally keep the bins in our backyard until pickup day, but my husband got mixed up and thought today was pickup - sure enough, we came home to our recycling all over the alley and in our garbage bin. Same with all our neighbors. What can we do about this? A 311 call is all I can think to do, but somehow I doubt that will really do much.

Does not matter much but you might want to check out a work in progress:

randy7771026.wix.com/orientfg for how serious I might get about recycling.

  • A while back someone took my blue cart from by my garage and moved it down to their own garage, so they had two and I had none. So I took it back and squeezed it into a corner of my garage and only put it out on the day of the pickup.
I guess if I were you I'd put a sign on the cart "NO METAL INSIDE."

For those think this type of stuff is cool, it looks like the one pictured in the link below, but with a darker cabinet, and not as pristine. It has a bunch of original paperwork, and looks like it was originally shipped to someone on the 5500 block of West Dakin.

Wal-Mart moving into 6 Corners

I would like to hear people’s views on possibility Wal-Mart occupying the Sears location at 6 corners. Do you agree with it or not agree with it?

  • If you want to attract male shoppers, open a grocery store, Home Depot and hot dog stand. A DSW will have the women come out in droves. Then there are mothers who'd like some entertainment for their kids to keep them occupied while they're at DSW ;)

  • Kohl's would be a good choice for that space and no to a Wal Mart.

Bathtub Reglazing?

Portage Park/Bungalow... We're debating reglazing vs. replacing a bathtub (it's an old Kohler, probably from the mid-50s). I'd rather not just "junk" it if the reglazing could be "white" enough to match subway tile.

I wouldn't mind reglazing every few years if necessary; I just don't like the idea of scrapping a bathtub that is very functional/but just not "pretty".

We've used Ugly Tub twice since we bought our house in 2006 for reglazing a claw foot. First time we were mostly happy with the finish, but they scraped up the new drain hardware and got paint residue all over bathroom. After complaining they came back to clean the bathroom and gave us $30 credit for next service for damaging hardware. Had them out again, probably a few years ago now, and were not at all happy with their new paint "formula". The guy that installed it kept saying it was the same stuff they use to paint airplanes. Well, the glaze was very thin and you could see all the patches right through the finish. Even some chips still remained. On top of this the installer kept telling me sob stories how he was down on his luck and did in fact guilt me into giving him a bigger tip. When we emailed Ugly Tub with photos of the poor finish, we reviewed no response. So we just decided to not give them our business again. We are definitely ready for another reglaze, so interested to hear recommendations also!

CTA Bomb Screening on Blue Line Starting Next Month

What do you think about the CTA having the Chicago Police Department screen random passengers before they board the train? If you still try to board the train, you will be subject to arrest.

If there are less trees on your block after this week....

The Streets & Sans and Forestry folks have been out removing trees on the parkway. These are trees that did not respond to the treatment for emerald ash bore. The trees that are being taken down are dead.
yes, it is sad that the trees were removed, but better to remove them now as opposed to a dead tree collapsing in the middle of winter and possibly injuring someone walking to a bus stop.

OH, I see. The tree in question is not on the parkway, like ours was.

It could be actual years as the City spends its forrestry money on saving/removing ash trees. But you might get lucky. By using the internet version you may be given the option of requesting a particular tree type from a list. On at least express preferences.

Gas Meter Replacement - Your Experience?

The person I spoke with at Peoples Gas didn't have any insights on timing.

So... for those of you have been through this process, how much of a warning do you get before needing to schedule the 4-hour window for moving the gas meter from the inside to the outside? I've read some posts where workers knocked on the door, wanting to do the work the same day. That would be difficult for us. Even a 24- or 48-hour warning could be difficult.

Sincerely, I acknowledge that this is a challenging project for Peoples Gas, but it's also challenging for homeowners.

  • pattymelt is mostly in charge

You can tell them no when they knock on the door and and then get a phone# from them to call if you can't commit making an appt. right then. I'm not talking about the general phone#, the guy who knocked gave me his cell#.

  • My experience:

    Our's was done last year.

    It wasn't "challenging" whatsoever.

As you have likely heard, the Mayor this week unveiled his proposed 2015 city budget. My staff and I will spend the next several weeks reviewing the 800-page, $8.9 billion budget with a critical eye, as I have in years past.

There are some positive items in this proposed budget: money for more pothole fillers, tree trimmers, and rodent control crews; more police trained to patrol on bicycle; and more support for homeless veterans and families. This budget also does not contain any property tax rate increase.

However, this budget also does nothing to address the looming $550 million pension payment that the state legislature has mandated must be paid to police and fire pension systems by 2016.

I welcome your input and ideas on how we craft a budget that reflects our values as a city. Take a look at the budget, and offer your ideas by emailing my office. ward45@cityofchicago.org

Thoughts on CAPS meeting every two months

At the last CAPS meeting for beat 1624, someone asked the question as to why we meet every two months rather than one. The response from the officer was there wasn't enough crime in the beat (Cicero to Narragansett and Irving to Montrose) and to save paper. There was a lot of disagreement from the crowd (which was a good turn out compared to the last one). Thoughts?

Where to buy meat and produce

I am looking for a place in the Six Corners or Portage Park area to buy meat and produce that is good and reasonably priced. I've been shopping at Jewel but their meat is so expensive. I've seen a lot of little local stores so I'm looking for recommendations for any of them. Thank you!!

  • Katherine Pastor, Irving Park United Methodist Church

Dennis, Family Fruit does have Amish raised chicken and eggs. I buy those things there, along with organic produce and the produce that doesn't really need to be organic. Shopping local is as much a priority for me as buying organic.

Also, at the Farmer's Markets, CD Family Farms has amazing pasture-raised meat. http://cdfamilyfarms.com/. We get beef, lamb, bison, and chicken from them and stock up for the winter.

Since last fall, I became outwardly concerned with the state of Irving Park Rd near my home. Our Illinois Route 19 acts much like highway, between Harlem Ave. and Cumberland Ave. There are two cemeteries on each side of it, which are Acacia Park Cemetery and Irving Park Cemetery. Cars ZOOM BY with little concern for the pedestrians and bikers. Anyone who would pull a traffic report would note that deadly accidents and bumper to bumper accidents are not a stranger here! Two of my neighbors were KILLED over the past two years, one on a bike and one in the car. This year, someone just DROVE THROUGH the rusted-out fence into Irving Park Cemetery. Often KIDS on bikes, MOTHERS with strollers and ELDERLY with their shopping carts either struggle through the gravel and mud filled paths, where used to be once concrete sidewalks on "both" sides of the road, or they maneuver their equipment into the street. These both northern and southern sidewalks used to be functional until they were abandoned in the late 1960's or so. If anyone would talk to the CROSSING guard by N. Pioneer Ave, ours is Kristen, would learn of the frequent dangers of crossing the street. She will be back in the fall when the school restarts and would appreciate having traffic lights installed, too. The requests to fix these sidewalks have bounced around various public offices with mixed results. I PLEA with all concerned citizens to assist me with getting this overdue safety issue resolved by contacting all politicians overseeing or soon-to-be overseeing this area. Hearing from the community-at-large vs. one neighborhood mother is far more impactful I am told. Thank you!!!

Please e-mail your support for the sidewalks to:

Bill, I agree with you that the Irving Park Rd. width "inconsistency" is driving most people crazy, incl. my self, esp. during the rush hour. If we could convince the businesses and some residents that they do not need the street parking, we would certainly eliminate the jumping back and forth between one and two lanes in each direction. This contraction and expansion is part of the problem. It causes speeding and then sudden breaking. It becomes an even bigger issue when the setting sun is in the driver's eyes. During the afternoon rush hour, it is not uncommon to have up to four cars lined up to turn left onto P streets. They do not have a left turn lane. They often get hit from behind by the blinded or distracted driver speeding in the westward direction. Hopefully, somehow, we can figure out a solution that works for most people.

  • Fantastic news: Per Alderman Cullerton, the City of Chicago received funds from the State of Illinois to cover the construction of sidewalks in the front of Irving Park Cemetery. If the status quo means an increase in minimum wage and protecting our public school teacher's jobs then yes I definitely will protect that. You brought up a host of issues with very little substance to prove them. Taxing people for services will hurt Illinoisans. Can you Picture paying taxes for a haircut? Jimmy Mac's version is an appropriate American colloquialism, one which I've used many times myself to describe it to the uninitiated.

It should also be note that most Irish in Ireland don't eat like that very often. My family usually considers it a special breakfast, like when family comes back home from America to visit. One of the many reasons my visits back aren't as frequent as I'd like.

Energy Supplier Recomendations?

I started comparing my energy supplier charges on my Comed bill to that of friends, and as it turns out I am paying twice as much per kWh. I've researched a few suppliers like Spark, Integrys, and Direct Energy and all have rates to lock into for of 6,12, 24, and even 36 months. Do many of you have any advice on chosing the most affordable supplier? I average 1,000 kWh per month.

  • I found this site informative. I believe that the dollar amounts that they are stating are for your electricity supply only, but I haven't contacted them for clarification. It is, at least, a good list of options beyond the couple that you mostly hear of.

You can also buy cheap LED bulbs on Newegg or Amazon. There are plenty of online stores that can sell them but prices vary and some beat Ebay when sales occur.

To get back on topic, you will have to compare the various companies offered and place a note on calendars, your phones, and other places to find a new contract when your 6,12, 24, or 36 month contract expires. The reason rates double is that when you are off a contract the company expects you to leave at any moment and you do not get a "long-term discount" for being with them. It is similar if you would not have a contract with your internet provider, some of their monthly rates are twice the contract rate if not more.

Six Corners Bistro

My wife and I had dinner at the new six corners bistro last night. The food is fantastic, our waiter was very friendly, the music choice was perfect. Not very loud and not annoying. I had the burger, they tell me it was ground fresh in house and it tasted like it. It's Byob but we were told a full offering will be available in a few weeks. They are a welcome addition to the neighborhood. The food is great, prices are fair, and the tables have good spacing. I didn't feel crammed in. We will definitely go back. If you have time pay them a visit. You won't be disappointed.

  • BnW I think WAGS was briefly on the same footprint as what is now the Dollar Store. Before that it was an Illinois Bell switching office and before that, part of the Dickenson Tavern property. And before that, Indian Country.

  • There's two "dollar" stores in Six Corners. The one on Milwaukee where everything is indeed only one dollar, and the other one on Irving that says dollar in it's name but products can be way more than one dollar.
