Does anyone remember the old convenience store on the southwest corner of Milwaukee and Devon Aves?

I grew up on the edge of Jeff Pk/Norwood Pk E in the 60's and 70's, and remember a slight hill on the corner of Milwaukee and Devon, about where the former Dominick's parking lot is today. On top of the hill was an old precursor to what we would now call a convenience store, the place you could go when the grocery stores were closed and you were out of bread or milk, or just had a taste for...

I grew up on the edge of Jeff Pk/Norwood Pk E in the 60's and 70's, and remember a slight hill on the corner of Milwaukee and Devon, about where the former Dominick's parking lot is today. On top of the hill was an old precursor to what we would now call a convenience store, the place you could go when the grocery stores were closed and you were out of bread or milk, or just had a taste for a candy bar. The store and hill were razed to make way for the Dominick's, but I recall that it seemed old, even in the 60's, and I think it had a large, illuminated clock outside above the door, musty wood floors and carried Hawthorne Mellody dairy products.

My uncle, who now lives in the area, wants to know what it was like before he moved there, and it's driving me crazy that I can't remember the name of the store! Does anybody's memory go back that far?

Going rate for house/dog sitter?

I'd like to have someone house/dog sit for us for a week. The dog is super low maintenance - she just needs to be fed once a day and let out a couple of times during the day (into the back yard). The person would also need to sleep at our house . I am thinking of asking a friend to do it, but I want to know what the fair compensation for such a request might be?

What a Good Idea!!!

Anybody notice the homemade doggie doo plastic bag dispensers secured to the trees around Onahan School??? Great thought!!! Anybody know how that came to be???

  • The girl scout troop made them for the neighbors that walk there dog's around the school. Now there should be no excuse for not picking up after there dogs. Great idea!!!

  • Our 2nd grade Brownie troop made them. Many people walk their dogs around the school without cleaning up after them. Our girls needed to earn a service patch and we came up with the idea after seeing them around Olympia Park. The girls were very excited to make them!!! Hopefully people will "get the message" and use the bags so our poor students don't have to step in doggie poop on their way to/from school. Thanks for noticing our hard work. :-)

  • Or step on doggy doo doo on the field where they have recess. I think it's a great idea and now I have a place to put my plastic bags.

Water main break

Was just curious, how many people have had water main breaks near them in the last year? I'd say within 2 or 3 blocks? If so then where? And how about people who took in water to the basements?

Blaze-N-Grill

I haven't been yet, but amazing what the site of minivans and work trucks (with ladders) parked at your eating establishment can do for you. For me, anyway, at least. Now I want to stop in and give it a try: http://www.blazengrill.com/

That's a pro-tip to any new fast food place: have all buddies with work trucks w/ladders park in your lot during rush hour.

I've been there on several occasions and every time I do get the Italian Beef. Have you ever had the Italian Beef from Gumba Joe's in Park Ridge? If you have you will know what I am talking about. It is about one of the best beefs I have had in a very long time. It has a certain flavor that I just crave. I am happy they have opened, now I don't have to travel as far to get my beef when I get the craving. My friend has had the chicken platter and the chicken sandwich and both were huge amounts of food that he couldn't even finish. I took my boss there for a beef and he too liked it. It is not at all rubbery, it kind of melts in your mouth, there is no fat or gristle at all. And it doesn't have that taste of cinnamon like at Al's Beef and others. Now I need to go and try the burgers, however with Leadbelly opening tomorrow I doubt I'll be doing that anytime soon. I have NO complaints about Blaze-N-Grill at all, service was prompt and friendly, food very good and generous.

  • Yeah I don't like cinnamon in Italian beef or chili.

Roadkill at front door on 6300 block of Sayre Ave.

I recently posted that I had the best neighbors, but apparently I included one that shouldn't have been. It didn't get there by some punk throwing it from a passing car, or walking down the sidewalk. This person deliberately walked up our walkway to the front entrance and...

We have done absolutely nothing to deserve this to happen, it's disgusting and cowardly. If someone has an issue with my household, ring my doorbell and tell me what I, my sister, or my 83 year old father has done to piss you off, because I am completely at a loss for a reason.

Too bad my cameras weren't recording, but they will be ...

  • I'll bet you're one of those neighbors who feed the squirrels...you do realize they are a member of the rodent family, right??? And leaving food out for any animals is never a good idea as it attracts additional unwanted rodents.

Act of Kindness from the Norwood Park Post Office Worker

I was pleasently surprised last week when the mail woman stopped at my home and rang the doorbell to give me a piece of mail that was flying down the street. This is a good sign that there are people who care about their jobs and others :)

  • Chris om nom nom

Thanks for posting this. USPS as a company gets a lot of flack, deservedly so, but the vast majority of postal workers are good folks working hard at a crappy, understaffed job.

  • Amy

We have actually been receiving mail every day for the last couple of weeks, and it comes in the afternoon now, not 7pm. Maybe they have new staff?

  • Nick Neighborhood watch

Well.....hate to say it, but I may have spoke too soon. Not that I'm sorry for appaulding the nice postal worker, whoever delever the mail the last two days gave me my neighbors two days in a row. I am wondering where my maiil is at, becuase no one has come to my door with mine. I feel like I am a postal employee these days..

In need of vet recommendation

Really need your assistance neighbors, anyone have any good recommendations for vets? In our area or burbs, just need the best vet. Closer obviously better but willing to travel any distance. Let me know and thank you in advance

  • I recommend Abell Animal Hospital. My family has been going there since Dr. Abell was actually practicing 1973. Very nice vets who explain procedures and answer questions. The staff are friendly. I was in grade school when my parents began taking our pets there. One time I had a twenty year old cat that was having health issues. Dr. Mayer gave me his home number since he knew how worried I was.

  • Risers has been the best for me over the last 4 years- prior to that had bad experiences at Abel, TLC and Touhy animal Hosp in Parkridge. Risers has lots of consistently good and conservative vets - they are not quick to jump to meds or tests not needed. I...

Risers has been the best for me over the last 4 years- prior to that had bad experiences at Abel, TLC and Touhy animal Hosp in Parkridge. Risers has lots of consistently good and conservative vets - they are not quick to jump to meds or tests not needed. I work as a physician assistant and although I am no vet I have a good understanding and can figure out pretty easy when a vet is being a bit aggressive with tests/meds ect. I also did not like the roaming dog at TLC. It's one thing to have a loose pet in a vets office,....it's another thing when that pet invades your space and makes you uncomfortable when you are trying to comfort your sick pet.

Area traffic problems, please weigh in

Neighbors, looking over EB ive seen some articles about the various ideas for the road diet on milwaukee, ive seen articles on accidents involving vehicles with other vehicles, bicyclists, pedestrians. So I'd like to get your views on a specific question and longtime residents please chime in to. What are your thoughts on roads with 1 lane in each direction vs 2 lanes in each direction? Does it matter if each direction has 1 or 2 lanes? does that in itself impact safety? and please dont turn it into a political debate, asking for your views and experiences for my own curiosity

Jimmy Mac, I was not aware that the transponders that change control the lights are not allowed in city ambulances. Since I know this is not the case in many suburbs, I am guessing that this is a city, rather than state, law.

Regarding buses, there are ways to make buses more predictable and CTA has implemented some of these solutions already. One is to place the bus stop on the far side (or just past) the intersection. This allows the bus to travel through the intersection before stopping. Another is to reduce the number of stops - from having a stop every block to having one every two blocks, for example. Another is to have express type services that only stop at every four blocks (major intersections) like the CTA used to have on Irving Park Road. And, finally to make buses most efficient typically requires a dedicated lane of travel, off bus ticketing, and traffic synchronization. The term for this type of service is called bus rapid transit, and this type of service is typically only appropriate on roads that have at least 4-5 lanes.

Regarding synchronization itself and whether it is monitored, it really depends on the type of equipment that powers the stop light. I am not a traffic engineer so this is a bit out of my area of expertise, but I have worked for a county level department of transportation in my career that was implementing synchronized traffic signals that were connected by fiber optic cables and could be controlled from a central location (kind of like in the movie, The Italian Job). It's probably not cost effective to have this at every stoplight but I bet virtually every downtown stoplight is controlled similarly.

As concerns transponders, yeah suburbs use those. This is apparently not a state law. I'm not sure though if is a city ordinance applicable to all ambulance companies or just a CFD departmental regulation. Since I know 2l paramedic on the CFD and w more with private companies, I ask for a clarification regarding current law and policy and report back. There will be a get together in about two weeks (my B-day) and there will be 3-4 paramedics present. I'll be sure to ask.

6 corners businesses

everyone, what do you think has been the big problem stopping business growth at 6 corners specifically the one block stretch of milwaukee? I dont think it is any one thing. We have all seen lots of businesses come in over the years there but with rare exception none seem to last long. thoughts?

  • Bill the Engineer NW Side Born & Raised

The point is Harry, it's helpful to know where you've been before you can chart a course forward.

  • In my opinion there is a lack of consumer with disposable income in that area. Local residents do not support the local businesses. Sure certain businesses will see activity, but anything eclectic or trendy will not make it as ling as the demographics remain the way they are.

Where to buy an outdoor playset?

We have very a small yard and are looking for a basic wooden climber that is essentially an elevated playhouse/fort without swings/slide. A treehouse without the tree. We live walking distance from a playground so all the bells and whistles aren't required. Any ideas?

  • My sister wants to sell hers this year. Bought at Costco 9 years ago. In great condition, no wood rot. Asking $350. It sounds like what you want. I'd attache a picture here but I don't think they allow. How do we private message one another?

KIng Pho

Great pho at King Pho. www.kingphorestaurant.com We went last week on a weeknight and just missed the dinner rush. I was afraid that the broth would be salty, but no. The broth is deep and flavorful. I've been to most of the legit Pho places in town and even in the burbs, and this broth is legit. Curious if anyone else has tried King Pho and what they thought. We'll definitely be back to try the rest of the menu.

The only minor ding was slow service. I'm sure they'll figure this out in time. Pls. try them out.

Avondale, between Lawrence and Laverne needs some serious clean-up. Branches from the trees and bushes growing on the railroad embankment are blocking much of the right lane. There's no room for 2 cars to pass without the northbound cars being scraped up by the branches. I don't know who's responsible for the maintenance (railroad or city), but maybe our alderman get something done.
