What's the Deal with River North Restaurants Shorting Peoples' Change?

I ordered carry out from a restaurant in River North last night. The order came out to $18.51. I paid with cash. The cashier gave me one dollar back and said they don't have any change -- so they just tried to short me the rest. Have your experienced this?

I called to talk to the manager about this and she was totally indignant. Apparently , she said that most restaurants in River North don't want to bother with cash so they round up or down. WTH!?

1st off, on a personal note, I go to this place 3 - 4 times a month, so this could really add up over the year.

2nd, they could be potentially dodging some major taxes. They also round up and give people whose bills are .01-49 the extra dollar. Not sure how it washes out in the end, but it seems pretty shady and annoying. If they don't want to bother with change, they should list prices rounded to the nearest dollar(that include tax) on their menu like food trucks.,

It should be the patron's option to tip for takeout. If the restaurant won't give exact change they should post the policy. (& I typically tip 20%+ at sit down restaurants so I'm no cheapskate)

  • Hope, Lakeview I live in a condo in the north Lakeview area

Becky, this is exactly my point! If they aren't going to give change they should just have prices rounded to the nearest dollar that include tax on the menu so there are no surprises. I tip very well when I dine in (20%+.) I just never thought to for takeout....

It's much more the additive result of the rounding that bother me more than one instance. Let's say I eat at River North restaurants 2x a week -- very typical for me. That's $57 a year in money out of my pocket for no reason if the change were .49 each time.

I wonder how the restaurants manage the taxes around this or even how many people use cash? I'm just going to use my credit card from now on and the restaurant can pay the processing fee.

Greyhound engine noise

Does anybody hear the engine noise from their facility at night? It's becoming quite loud

  • It's been like that forever. As the weather gets colder the buses are warming up. 3, 4, 5AM you can hear it across the river. I adjusted and slept through it by the time winter arrived but it is annoying.

Did Chicago Park District Skip Steps to Name Jesse White Center, Park?

But now Park District officials insist the vote to name the building also covered the park where the building sits at 412 W. Chicago Ave. — even though naming the park after White was never referenced in the approved proposal and the proposal was never amended at the meeting.
