New in town (from AZ) and in need of Playdates for 18-month-old!

We just moved from Arizona and living here is a big lifestyle change for us, however, we have yet to meet other moms and toddlers! I would love it if we could get the opportunity to organize a playdate sometime soon.

I've joined this site and meetup groups. If you would like to share some suggestions or ideas, please do!

We live close to Damen and Grand.

  • gingervitis I like warm hugs.

Is it through the Chicago Park District? That sounds awesome!

  • Yes, the Chicago Park District has lots of programs for kids. I started bringing my kids when they were very small and met many wonderful people through the programs at the Smith Park. My kids grown now and still participate in adult programs like softball, floor hockey, and basketball at Smith :)

Trick or Treating, Just Moved From AZ

Hi everyone, we just moved from Arizona and I'm just getting to know this awesome town. Was wondering if you could help me out with this question:

Was wondering how trick or treating works in this neighborhood since we came from a very traditional suburb where every home is a single-family home. We have a toddler and we weren't sure if we should really go knocking on certain doors...especially those that have more than several units.

Do you have any suggestions or a guide to what we should be doing? Should we just go about our way like we did in Arizona?

  • AOS

We are in the same neighborhood near Talcott. This is our first Halloween in this neighborhood, and I expect great trick-or-treating for my kids this year and expect to get lots of kids at our house because the neighborhood seems to be predominantly single family homes. There are lots of...

There are lots of kids in this area, too. I think we'll be able to go door to door around here.

We used to live only 4 blocks away, but it was almost all condos and NOBODY gave out candy on Halloween. You can also try the businesses along Chicago Ave, but none really give out chocolate (the "good stuff" to me), mostly hard candy.

    Have fun!!

I'm really beginning to think we lucked out on picking the right neighborhood to live in...haha

Just a few precautionary measurers to remember for Halloween: Many will
have on amazing costumes, please ensure your costumes have some type of reflector on it so motorist can see you when crossing the street. A flash light or glow lights will also help to let others know you are present. If possible, have an adult with you when trick-or-treating or walk in groups.

We hope everyone has a wonderful and safe Halloween.
David Ramos president, Nani Almendarez vice president, Dave Hunt treasurer, Ellen Ernst secretary.

  • Smith Park Neighborhood Alliance (SPNA) Neighborhood Association

The candy donations came from many residents of the Smith Park Neighborhood. We do this annually. Any neighbor who wants to donate can take bagged candy to the field house. They will receive a sign they can hang on their gate or door indicating to trick or treaters that they can get their candy at the park.

Find out how taxes/TIFs in the 27th Ward have been spent

Just saw this and thought others might be interested.

There is a free meeting about how our taxes/TIFs in the 27th Ward have been spent and allocated, and more. The meeting is on Thursday, November 6, from 6:30pm - 8:30pm, at 1044 W Randolph St.

I’ve always wondered where our taxes were going, how it was being spent, and whether it was being spent on things needed, like parks, schools, traffic relieve.

The meeting is being hosted by Gabe Beukinga, candidate for 27th Ward Alderman, and Tom Tresser of the CivicLab TIF Illumination Project.

High time to vote out ineffective politicians

26th Ward Residents:

You have to admire the skills of politicians who do an extraordinary job of ''divide and conquer.''

They are masters of sleight of hand, smoke and mirrors, and voodoo economics - all in the guise of doing what is right for the ward while creating such division among its people we stand alone.

And mired in all this ''flapdoodle,'' the average Chicagoan - befuddled by rhetoric, the manipulations of statistics, the-out-of-context quotes, the spin of news agencies - takes a side, believes it, defends it, becomes frustrated when nothing changes, relies on their representative to tell them who to blame and then becomes angry when the status quo doesn't improve for the majority.

The Chicago City Council has a current approval rating below 30 percent. And yet, defying all logic, Chicagoans don't fire their employees. At least eight out of 10 Aldermen should be fired!

Even though corporations and the 1 percent contribute millions to their candidates, we do have power: We can vote! Every one of us should forget party lines and vote those currently in power out on their derrieres.
Allow the newbies to have a positive impact, and if they don't, vote them out. Eventually, the message will be received that you can't fool Chicagoan anymore. Let's take the power back and vote the bums out!

Street lights out

I have called 311 and visited Cityofchicago.org 11 times in the past two weeks to report several blocks with the street lights out around Eckhart Park. If you happen to live on Elizabeth St, Fry St, Chestnut St (surrounding Eckhart Park. Please help and report these entire blocks out. Car break-ins have been occurring nightly and alcohol and drug consumption in parked cars along Eckhart Park is at an all time high (no pun intended). This is also the area the 7 gunshot were reported last week. Thanks to everyone for helping get this issue reported and resolved.

  • Well as a city employee I can only say keep calling in with your concerns. with the past Mayor and current one they have layed off many people. The city is expecting miracles with skeleton crews.

  • I had the same trouble in the 1500 block of Adams Street over the summer. I called for 3 months at least. I got the Alderman involved too. I even got text messages from the City advising me that the light was replaces...which was not true. Finally I saw a...

I had the same trouble in the 1500 block of Adams Street over the summer. I called for 3 months at least. I got the Alderman involved too. I even got text messages from the City advising me that the light was replaces...which was not true. Finally I saw a crew in the neighborhood working in the alley. They said that the lights were not on the list for replacement but they agreed to repair it.

I think you have to keep calling. This is a good venue to get the word out.

Construction Thieves

Hi all - there are two white males aged 35-45 that drive a red/tan ford truck (it's a truck that has a "backseat") with two "sawhorses" for a ladder rack in the tailgate of their truck who we caught stealing from us on video surveillance. We believe these two men are also responsible for an apartment break-in across the street from us about 6-7 months ago.

We believe these two men are also responsible for an apartment break-in across the street from us about 6-7 months ago.
We were gone this weekend and they cut the chain to our back gate and then came the next night and stole a piece of construction equipment off of my husband's van.
We made a police report and are giving them the surveillance.
I'll post a copy of the video of the men and the truck to this site. Just FYI.
We are at Greenview and Chestnut.

  • I am sorry that you had this problem. Thank you for sharing the details. We will keep a look-out for these guys. Please keep us posted on an updates.

In the 40 years living in this neighborhood, I am bitter to know that our neighborhood is now more of a reason for @#$% to steal. Not hating on the new residents but this is BS. Of all days not to have the dogs out...I beat myself up.

Sorry you had to learn the hard way to always lock a bike, even inside. Some years ago, a thief broke out one of the wooden panels in my old overhead door, and got into the garage. No rocket scientist, him, so instead of opening the door and going to town on the contents of my garage - which included several expensive bikes - he instead stole only the long, narrow things he could pass out through the same opening he broke in through (a weed-whacker, a leaf blower, etc.). But I got the message and within a few days I had rigged a steel bar inside and locked our bikes to it! I'd also suggest steel bars over the windows, on the inside if you prefer the aesthetics.

  • Thanks Bob H! Big lesson learned. While the lesson for the day is "don't leave w/o locking everything" especially to the 11year old, yesterday, shopping cart "MO" [very video camera] decided to start lifting garage doors up and apparently ours rised up a little, could not get in so he managed to steal the guard liner. OMG! So new garage next week! Have a great weekend Bob H.

Late Night Fire on W. Chestnut?

I saw a house on fire and smoking majorly last night around 12am-1am. Tons of firetrucks, noise and commotion.

The firefighters used saws to open the roof. I can't find it anywhere on the news.

Anyone know what happened?

I hope everyone is ok.
