12:22 am - 9/20/12: 3 shots

Audible from near Race and Damen, but no idea about direction. I haven't heard any sirens yet, and I'm not exactly standing in the window to look out to see what might be going on.

The police should have arrived within ten minutes of your 911 call

  • Robin, you're assuming 911 was called. CPD doesn't necessarily arrive with sirens blaring, especially when traffic is light. The also circle the area looking for shooters leaving the area. It's not like the $hitheads shoot and then hang around waiting for the PoPo.

Robbery at gunpoint 2100 block Erie

My neighbor was robbed at 10pm tonight at gunpoint while pulling into the garage.

2 African American males (20-25yo one with an Afro) approached him after he pulled into the garage, ordered him out if the car and onto his knees facing the wall as they rummaged through the car and took his wallet, watch and cell phone.

Be aware at night everyone, especially in the alleys. These types of robberies seem to come in waves.

There was an attempted garage break-in two nights ago in the 2100 block of Huron. Between Huron and Erie. Apparently the homeowner heard something and turned off the lights and looked out the window. The person must have heard or seen the home owner and ran off because they did not get it. The wood around the deadbolt was damaged as they tried to break the wood to pop open the deadbolt and the back gate to the ally was left open.

If you have windows not in reach of anyone, keep them open at night to hear any issues that can come up. This is the only way the break in did not occur.

Lost Dog- Chihuahua!

Be on the lookout for this Lost Chihuahua! Belushi was lost at Huron & Wood in the West Town Neighborhood of Chicago on Sept 15. Please share too!

  • Btw, Erica - I think your flyers were extremely helpful and well-placed. I saw them early on and realized that it was in my area so I'd been keeping an eagle-eye out for your pup. So glad that he was found! But much of that is because you did such a good job of getting the word out. Kudos!

West Town residents financing businesses

Hi, West Towners! As supporters of the stores and cafes in West Town, I wanted to share a new way to advocate for local businesses and create a stronger neighborhood economy.

Your many years of love for The Ugly Mug Cafe on Chicago Ave. has encouraged them to open for a second location. They are seeking customers, friends, and neighbors to fund a community sourced loan for the costs of construction. They chose this type of loan instead of traditional financing because they believe in the benefit of community involvement to growing the cafe and the neighborhood. FYI, they built their patio this year using this same lending method.

Check out how this works here:

Will Natalino's ever re-open?

Hi neighbors!

Does anyone know why Natalino's closed down a few years ago?

There is a large "license revoked" sign posted on the side, but what is the story here?

I never got the chance to try it out, but I heard the food and service were great.
This neighborhood needs a great Italian eatery!

Any idea if something will ever open up in its place?

    Feb 11, 2009

(Crain's) — Midwest Bank has filed a foreclosure lawsuit to collect about $650,000 on Mr. Beef, the longtime Italian beef sandwich restaurant in River North.

The Melrose Park-based bank alleges that Mr. Beef's co-owners, Joseph Zucchero and Michael Genevese, failed to pay off two loans, totaling $330,000, when they came due in October, and missed monthly payments on a third loan, according to a complaint filed Dec. 19 in Cook Court Circuit Court.

The loan problems aren't tied to the performance of Mr. Beef, a Chicago culinary institution at 666 N. Orleans St. The difficulties could be a simple story of restaurateurs overextending themselves at a bad time. A portion of the loans on the Mr. Beef building were used to cover costs of Natalino's, a West Town restaurant that Messrs. Zucchero and Genevese opened in March, "just on the cusp of this whole economic meltdown," Mr. Zucchero says ruefully.

But Mr. Zucchero says Natalino's, a 120-seat restaurant... "does phenomenal, even in this market." Instead, he sees the foreclosure case as an example of how some tight-fisted lenders are squeezing small entrepreneurs.

In addition to the Midwest Bank loans, Norridge-based Plaza Bank holds a $2-million loan secured in part by the Chicago Avenue property. The Plaza Bank loan is current, Mr. Zucchero says...

Both banks have rebuffed efforts to refinance those loans and other debts, which total about $3.5 million, he says. Messrs. Zucchero and Genevese say they have offered to put up properties worth more than $6 million to secure the loans.

"You'd think they (the banks) would go, 'OK, come on in and talk this out and get this thing rehashed," Mr. Zucchero says....

Modest cost overruns made finances even tighter. Mr. Zucchero admits missing payments to Midwest Bank, but blames that in part on non-Hodgkins lymphoma that he was diagnosed with last year, which took him away from the business.

Found dog

Found a white mixed breed dog in the starbucks lot at grand and ogden earlier today, my friend has him at her house right now but we are hoping to find the owner. He had a choker collar on but no tags. Very friendly dog, let me know if you can help locate the owner.

  • Have you had her scanned for a microchip yet? Any vet clinic can do it, or we can scan her at The Anti-Cruelty Society. I found the owner of a nice dog in West Town earlier this year that way.

  • There's a lady who works at 1528 W Adams building who lost a dog. She put posters all over Near West Side, however that was about 8 weeks ago. The dog was tiny though, so I can't see it requiring a pinch collar. How big is this dog?

Attn jeep owners

Hi neighbors, just want to notify jeep owners to watch out for a white or gray van, a man stole the spare tire off the back of a jeep that was parked in front of my house. I woke up to a squeaking noise around 1 am Monday morning, only to see a man loosening the lug nuts holding the spare. I went to grab my phone to capture a picture of the plate, but by then, he drove off. He was clearly a passenger, he had black hair and a beard.

Drones Flying In Your Neighborhood

My sleep was disturbed at 2:30 am this morning by a drone hovering above our apartment building. I have seen it hovering over my building and adjacent ones in broad daylight several times, sometimes for several hours. This is the first time I have seen and heard it at night. Has anyone noticed this happening near their homes? If so, is there anything that I can do about it?

Big Al - I've never flown one of the gas powered helicopter models, but I've seen videos and it totally make sense that the exhaust would look like something be sprayed down from it. (Plus it would be really cool to set up a RC helicopter to spray water on small fires - it's pretty common to make scale WWII planes that do things like drop fake bombs or make machine gun sounds when you hit a button on the remote control - a fire fighting RC chopper would be pretty awesome, particularly for firefighters!) Thanks!

I've never been able to find a city ordinance that flat out bans flying radio control planes, helicopters, etc (some cities/towns do have them, though). A big part of why I'd like to help defuse this situation with our neighbor who is buzzing the neighborhood is that I'd like to avoid some alderman with nothing better to do passing some sort of ban of "drones", and which would probably ban all other radio control flying gizmos. (I'm thinking of some of Burt Natarus' more zany proposals...)

It's cool that firefighters can use some of their down time to fly a RC heli, I can do some test runs in the alley, and even that our neighbor can do *a little* flying around (but not when its really bugging people, and particularly at 2:30am). It would be nice if we could avoid heavy handed new ordinances or unnecessary police involvement (though, repeatedly waking people up in the middle of the night is a pretty appropriate thing to call the police about, if it keeps happening.)

Steel plank at Chicago/Noble Intersection

Hi everyone, anyone have a clue what the city is doing w/ the plank that's been at this intersection for a few weeks now? It's covering some kind of opening (not a pothole) and is now blocked by barriers. I have emailed (and so have other neighbors) Reggie in the Alderman's office w/ no response. I have also called 311 (which is how the barriers got there) b/c it was so loud when the buses and cars would go over it and causing our buildings to shake. Thanks!

West Town Shooting

Did anyone else hear gun shots about 4 AM on Sat at Chicago and Noble? I was awakened by 3 shots that made a popping noise. I wasn't 100% sure at the time but then I saw the cops and the news the next morning. One article said a gang member was shot around Bishop/Chicago and the other said 1300 block of Chicago so not sure exactly where this happened. Something also happened at Edit Salon as their windows are scratched and there was broken glass on the street in the front by the bus stop. Just wondering if anyone has more details. Thanks!
