Camelot school from philly moves to Chicago

Fri, Jul 25, 2014 7:00 pm

Emmanuel Christian Church will be having a meeting to vote on CPS's proposal to lease space at the church for an alternative high school. They plan to serve 16-21 year olds with behavior challenges. Please take time to come and hear what they are planning to do. Spread the word!

Many people do not know that the areas between Hermitage and the east side of Damen Ave and between 83rd. and 87th. was remapped into the 21st. ward. It was effective Jan. 2013, so it might have been oked by the 18 ward residence prior to the remap. You think ??

  • The church's action was not surprising, they didn't want the community to know how much rent Camelot is offering to pay. The Alderman's office had nothing to do with this , they are just blowing smoke. You need to contact Jennifer Vidis Deputy Director of Alternative Schools at CPS and Joseph Haley jhaley@camelotforkids.org from Camelot and have a community meeting. http://cps.edu/News/Press_releases/Pages/04_25_2012_PR2.aspx

The fight is not over, It has just begun.

The was a rally protesting the closing of Simeon's Auto and electrical shops. This can not take place. The buck stops at the mayors' feet and Ald. Brookins is again asleep at the switch. If we lose these shops the mayor and alderman will pay at the polls.

U.S. universities had, on average, one counselor for every 367 students last year, down from one for every 282 in 2003, according to a survey by NACADA and the college-admissions testing company ACT. You cannot just make up facts and say college students all change their major at least twice before their junior year. One of every three switches majors, according to the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA. Of course there are situations where guidance counselors play a huge role in students' lives, but there are also many other places to turn when a student is in need. The point is that you cannot force students to learn something that they have no interest in learning, or see no value in.

  • Bottom line...only 23 signed up....that is not sustainable.

New charter school for at risk youths

I recently learned that Emmanuel Christian Church has entered into an agreement w/ CPS to open an alternative high school at 83 rd & Damen. No community engagement efforts just trying to slip in without notice. Smh!

  • You and your neighbors need to DEMAND CPS send out the head of alternative schools and explain what is happening. Alternative schools are not all the same and you need to know what kind of school is coming. We had Richard Milburn for 1.5 years and had trouble as it...

You and your neighbors need to DEMAND CPS send out the head of alternative schools and explain what is happening. Alternative schools are not all the same and you need to know what kind of school is coming. We had Richard Milburn for 1.5 years and had trouble as it is a school for youth who are expelled from CPS and CPS approved alternative schools. It is a school that had to have armed security guards. Once we got on CPS and the archdiocese of Chicago they moved, Many of the churches that once had schools are looking for ways to generate revenue from the spaces since the school closed.

Wow! This is very concerning. I will do just that. Thank you.

Protests to keep Simeon Career Academy auto and electrical shops open

There will be a rally Monday 6:00pm at Simeon Career Academy to protest the closings of the auto and electrical shops. I will also have petitions there to have signed and delivered to Ald. Brookins to demand that he prevent the closings. With the state of black young unemployment in this city we can not let this happen

    Then u say
"I also think neighborhoods need to be mixed. No majority of one over the other so people are forced to get along..." HOW do you enforce that ??
    Then you say
"But most of all everyone needs to stop blaming one over the other and forget about the past and fix the future. Even in your own personal relationship you have to realize bringing up the past just angers some and hurts others..." So dont bring up peoples past ? Dont dissect, understand and avoid repeating the past ? Because you might make someone upset ????

    I'm done, this is ridiculous

Good I am glad you are done because you just want to blame everyone else for your problems so continue on, it seems to be working really great for you. I know you can't enforce any of that I was saying it would be a nice thing if that could happen. You choose to make a fight so go on fight with everyone, I am sure that will solve all of your problems. I know you learn from history so I try in my own life not to repeat any of the wrongs I have done and to do it better each and every time. Hate is what you seem to want to hang on to, not forgiveness. I am NOT saying forget, I am saying FORGIVE and move on and make life better for everyone around you. That is my goal figure out what is yours.

love not war

Can we all get alone im tired of the police riding my Hood, we need protection we don't need cops looking for more teens to kill.

  • You must be joking. You are a complete idiot if you are blaming the police for the lack of parenting that goes on in your community. We need more police in your awful neighborhood because you cannot control your own people. The Governor agrees and now the Illinois State Police will be patrolling the streets. Before you blame the police, get your head out of your a** and wake up stupid.

  • 30+ yrs Long-time resident, trying to help keep it livable

I don't know what "can we all get alone" wants, or needs. Protection? How? So, not plainclothes police - you just don't want police at all??? And they are the ones killing teens? OK, lets ignore the gangbangers & mentally disturbed & social misfits cause we know how well they...

OK, lets ignore the gangbangers & mentally disturbed & social misfits cause we know how well they all get along. There are a lot more things I'm tired of in my hood and yours, but the police aren't near the top of the list. These problem children start off in someone's home for better or worse & they wind up on the street where they can't think straight and don't shoot straight.

Thank you I love Doran Patrick comment. Police are not lkilling your kids, kids are killing each other. It's the uneducated adults that complaining, parents need to raise their kids!!!! Stop blaming the police! You ought to be glad police are patrolling your neigjborhoiod! We all know why some neighborhoods are bad.!!! Instead of complaining about your neighborhood, YOU need to do something! GET INVOLVE!!!!
