Recycling CFLs & Batteries?

Just moved to Old Town, finally not living out of boxes! Where can we take batteries and CFL bulbs for recycling?

  • The city has a Household Chemical & Computer Recycling facility at 1150 N. North Branch. Weekly hours are limited, so check the website for full info:

Alkaline batteries no longer contain mercury. I know places that take them but I'm told they really end up in the trash, at least around here. That's why the City libraries and other places stopped taking them.

It's like foam. There are no companies in Chicago or Cook County that recycle foam. It takes too much foam to create anything useful so there is no commercial value. All foam ends up at the dump. (There are places in the burbs where foam is recycled but they get all they need locally.) The anti-foam people in Chicago calculated that the foam lunch trays used by Chicago school kids would fill Willis Tower in a year.

Weekly cleaning service?

Hello! We just moved into a new condo and are looking for a good cleaning service to have in weekly. I had Maye's Cleaning in to do our move-in, but they don't offer weekly, tailored services. I would like to have the same person/crew in, as there would be tasks that would be alternating every other week. Any suggestions would be appreciated. We've used bigger services like The Maids in the past but have been most happy with smaller, localized businesses.

I am currently using an online survey to collect data on Old Town residents' perspective on volunteering and their desire for more opportunities. The more people who take the survey, a better representation of the neighborhood I have and ultimately this allows me to better develop and tailor and community programs.

I am hoping you can help me reach more Old Town residents by taking my survey.
It is a quick 9 question survey that should only take about 5 minutes to complete.
