was at the park when this all began. the whole second floor was engulfed in flames and those poor firefighters where in there when the second floor collapsed on them!! bad thing is the entire playground is made of wood so hope they can contain it to just the field house. hard to see that going on that field house has been there forever.
sad is all i can say and hope all those firemen come out ok!!

Cyclists
I have a general question that maybe someone could answer. Do folks on bicycles have to obey traffic lights and signs as well? I just see a lot of the them flying through intersections without stopping at the stop sign. I've seen some close ones.
Im just curious.
Thanks!

Two more rules for cyclists that are often broken: 1) Cyclists are required to follow the posted speed limit, INCLUDING the new school zone/park limits. 2) Bicyclists are required to have fully functioning lights (front and back) when riding from dusk to dawn.
The city of Chicago could make a mint by patrolling the intersections on Kenmore between Ardmore and Devon and ticketing cyclists who run the stop signs. Very little surprises me about Chicago, but the fact that the city lets this rich source of revenue go untapped for so long truly amazes me.
And do not get me started on the number of cyclists riding on Broadway sidewalks...
I've been bike commuting in Chicago for 17 years. So I have more than a few opinions about this. I, and many other cyclists, operate our bikes the way we operate a car: Following the rules of the road, including stopping, fully, for every stop sign and giving pedestrians the right of way. I am not in the Tour de France, I am merely commuting to and from work, and therefore slowing down, stopping and restarting my pedals doesn't bother me. (I'm just thrilled to not be on a CTA bus or train or stuck in a car.) When I want to ride like the wind without stopping I go to one of the many bike trails in the forest preserves or out in the country away from hectic urban traffic.
It's upsetting that so many other cyclists do not even attempt to slow down much less stop at intersections. These cyclists give the rest of us a bad (hated) reputation. Which is why I support (and desperately want) required, visible licenses on all bicycles used by anyone over the age of 16 in the city. It will force accountability. I will gladly pay a license fee and display a lighted license number on my bikes. (Wanna bet how many thumbs down I get for that?)
-
Lacy your friendly local artistGreat thread. I just wish Chicago could launch a PSA or info campaign that would let everyone know that YES, cyclists must obey rules of the road (and drivers must acknowledge their right to use it)! Drivers and cyclists both need to be educated on this.

Did anyone ride the Metra this weekend?
I'm going to have to ride it tomorrow, and I'm wondering how it was. Did everyone get searched? Did they take a ruler to your bag to make sure it was really 15 x 15? Were there long delays? Or maybe it was an uneventful, none of the above day?

Korea Town on Bryn Mawr: Living, dying or dead?
All the empty storefronts on Bryn Mawr west of the river makes me question whether the area is Korea Town in name only. A sign of the economic depression or of the pace of the exodus of Korean-Americans from the City to the suburbs? When the area comes back, will it have a Korean-American profile or will it be something new? I think the City's the richer for the strong presence of Korean-Americans here.

Lawrence Ave through Albany Park (formerly known as honorary Seoul Blvd. Not sure if that's still the case or not.) used to be solidly Korean up through the mid nineties and there isn't even a Korean market left in that area anymore. I sorely miss the Clark Market that used to be on Kedzie just north of Lawrence. They had wonderful take-out of fresh-made snacks and salads and a great fish counter. It's now a very, very good Middle-Eastern grocery store but I still miss the Korean food.

After midnight, you just may have to park west of Clark.
Its rare, but it has happened.
If you park from 7 pm to midnight, you sometimes will have to move your car by 9am the following day, or you will get ticketed.
If you park before 5pm, you should be fine……..You will get parking within 4 blocks of your crib…
Sunday could be tougher before 5pm…………
You may have to park further.Try not to use the car on Sunday, okay?
When you first start using your car around here, you really gotta be sharp……..It don't hurt to be a lil bit paranoid even………Really check those signs out…They could be behind you 100 feet or more……Look for hidden hydrants.
Okay, good luck.

Oh, another thing, i forgot…
I brought my car from North Carolina also…
Listen, you gotta have 2 license plates, not 1……OMG.
Once you buy those plates at the DMV,
you gotta place BOTH on the car right away! And the sticker on the passenger front windshield!
They will get you fast………
OMG, watch out for this … They don't play….
You are looking at 270 bucks total on these transfers…
But im only payin $28 a month insurance, thank god..

JeffO scrapes, paints Farwell CTA viaduct
Yes folks, JeffO is back, with a vengeance. This afternoon I came across him scraping peeling paint off the Farwell CTA viaduct and painting it.
He said he went the hardware store with a paint chip and matched the color. He had a paint scraper on a long pole, and paint roller on an extension pole. He was working on the middle support columns when I saw him. He even painted the base.
Now, that's taking matters into your own hands!
His son was there helping. When I asked him what he thought about what his dad was doing, he said, "I think he's doing good things for the community."
I couldn't have said it better.
Thank you, JeffO.

Why I love Rogers Park
This evening I took a stroll through our neighborhood. Maybe it was the gentle late spring evening light which illuminated the leaves on trees beautifully. Maybe it was the man strumming his ukelele on his front porch. Maybe it was the young couple walking their dog or the three grade school kids riding their scooters down the sidewalk while their mothers stood by talking and watching. Or, maybe it was the few measures of a saxophone wafting through the open window or the sound of the trumpet I heard a few doors down the block. But I love Rogers Park.

I feel extremely lucky to live in Chicago. I have been to other great cities...NYC, LA, Boston, San Francisco, Wash. DC, and Toronto for example. Each have many wonderful features of their own, and I have enjoyed my visits to these places immensely. But when it comes down to it, there's no other place on this big, green Earth I want to call home but Chicago. It has its faults, definitely, but when I stack the undesirable features next to what I love and appreciate about Chicago, the pros list soars above the cons. To me, Chicago is the perfect blending of what I want most in a home town: diversity, interesting neighborhoods, a thriving downtown, transportation, culture, (art, music, museums, theater, etc.), entertainment/recreation, vast array of dining options, from almost every conceivable ethnic cuisine to the exquisite to bar fare to sidewalk dining to the funky, ultra-budget-friendly diners to the multitude of cafes, incredible architecture, the extensive parks and beaches system, the abundance of shopping options, the dynamic lakefront, along w/ affordability. And so much more! I enjoy travel a great deal, but wherever I have been, I have always been happy to Chicago at the end of my journey. No one has a crystal ball, but I don't see myself ever living anywhere else. And as for RP, barring some unforeseen circumstance, I hope to grow old here.

New Restaurants on Pratt
I was just out for a walk taking in the changing season when I noticed a new restaurant in the old RoPa location. It’s called aQUa Bar and Grill. It looks more casual than RoPa but the menu looks good and reasonable to boot! Then I crossed Sheridan and noticed the new pace going in on that corner: Pillars Social Café. It looks like it’s going to be a really cool place too! Anyone know or heard anything about these places?

I love the space where Aqua is but disappointed with what they've done with it. A pool table in the front? Really? The sign is horrible too with those colored flashing lights. Makes it seem cheap. So much potential in that space for a really nice restaurant. Too bad parking sucks in that area. Was thinking Loyola should rent out that big lot west on Pratt that is empty so Pillars, Aqua and others can use it for parking.
-
Pillars is a Winner - good food, good menu variety, good service and good prices. The Korean "poutine" at Bop&Grill is a hoot. It is decadent, heart-unhealthy and great comfort food. But anything with Kimchi is a slam dunk gift from culinary Heaven.

This was one of the most abused signs I have seen in awhile.
And this underpass in general not looking so hot. Im not sure how much work is going to be done over there when the EL stop closes. But regardless, the sign vandalism shouldnt be tolerated at this level. I see that the city WHEN it steps in to address sign vandalism basically paints over it, which makes look pretty bad. It didnt take long to take the stickers off of it. Actually I found WD-40 works pretty good and usually I dont even have to rewet it. Just using a decent stiff 2 inch putty knife and using it CAREFULLY helps alot.
I have seen previous attempts from others to get stickers off with mixed results. I will admit Im not perfect, thats for sure, only with practice will someone get better. One stop sign there had a bit of damage from one such attempt, I was able to get the rest of the sticker off no problem. I think the solution for anyone (especially the city) trying to get stickers off of signs is put wd-40 on it first and come back later.
I am still working on the STOP WAR stop sign. And just as I suspected, when vandalism sits for long enough it invites more vandalism. A sticker was put on top of the WAR graffiti. So yes I can see some people's point about sometimes this sort of stop sign being cool, but not so cool when the vandalism piles on top of vandalism.
The sign highlighted in the photo, when I took the eye stickers
of off it the black paint of the 8's came off, so I used some flat black oil paint
to repaint the 8s.
In conclusion, Sign Vandalism is rampant across Chicago, and I think the city needs to address this situation better than they have. They need to teach their graffiti removers how to restore signs. Its not that hard and its fun. And the city needs to stop
just painting over signs making them ultimately look worse. Restoration is better
than patchwork covering with paint.

I have had the flash on Western and Touhy go off in my face late at night and ruin my night vision because someone got too close to the white line. I have had people slam on their brakes in front of me because the light turned yellow. They are a definite safety hazard.
The money grab part is just blatently obvious. Some one else brought ut that it is also a ploy to becin phasing out the crossing guards, who all cost money.
Speed Bumps are cheap and very effective why arent we using something that doesnt tax the citizens? Why does the city punish the good hard working people of the community. Why focus on someone going 10 mph ofer the speed limit when we have kids shooting each other i nthe street?
This is so obviously a money grab!
So, lets add a solution. What would work to counter this? A petition drive? Media Campaign? How do we get these lame politicians to realize that they represent the people and that the people of this city are tired of their Orwellian tactics?

Is anyone traveling from June 9 - 23 and wants to sublet their apartment? We would prefer a place where she can have the apartment, rather than have a room in an occupied unit. She is an incredibly nice and generous person and would take great care of the place. I'm sure she would even cat sit (although probably not dog sit, since she will be at our apartment all day, taking care of our daughter.)
Let me know. I will also check craigslist sublets, airbnb, etc. Even with all of those sources, I am having a difficult time finding something affordable and nearby.
Any suggestions welcome. Thanks!

We are getting to know each other and doing something positive for our neighborhood. We all stick together as a group to do this, so it really is something we do together. And it looks like we will be blessed with perfect weather - again!
So even if you are new to our group - come join us! We'd love to get to know you. Any questions - just email me through EveryBlock.

I think you mentioned in your post that you were looking forward to "positive loitering" since you used to do it a long time ago? We took that to mean that you were looking for the Positive Loitering group-so I thought that when John answered and explained about the difference between the two, that the situation had been clarified. So, sorry I didn't respond for the block club.
Yes, there WAS a Positive Corners Block Club meeting on May 9th at 7pm. We were there in the main room of the church and there is a bell to ring- but it isn't real prominent. Our next meeting for sure we will leave lobby lights on and a sign on the door. Sorry about all the mix-ups! We'd love to meet you.

Invitation to be part of the Republican presence in Ward 49/Rogers Park
I just wanted to let people know that I've created a Ward 49 Republican website that interested folks can visit to "support," volunteer, and provide suggestions/input. I invite all interested parties to take a look at http://www.ward49gop.org/ -- especially those independent-leaning residents who are increasingly doubtful that decades of Chicago Democratic rule have been good for this City and our community!
FYI – I KNOW that the "No Thanks" button is going to get quite the work out with this posting!!

I think there are more of us than we realize! I come from a long line of Cook County Democrats, became an independent, and am now more in agreement with moderate Republicans, like Sen. Kirk, than with Democrats. I think we either turn both parties around to serve the common interest or we face continued gridlock. Sometimes I think a third party is the best solution, but I don't know how you keep the fringes from taking control of it, as happened with the Tea Party. One thing is clear: there's too much money going from too few people to too many candidates; that money buys access, which means influence, which is reflected in public policy. I'm in favor of both limited government and a social safety net. Both used to be possible. Now it seems we have to settle for either/or. What happened?

Alderman Moore, please explain
Alderman Moore, you are part of a news release asking the very serious question of whether Latvia can be trusted by NATO. According to your news release, this very critical statement is based on a book you read. Will you kindly explain your depth of knowledge of Latvia and how you came to this conclusion to the extent that you are pursuing media coverage for yourself and this issue?

So how "foreign" really is the issue of Latvian politics to our alderman? (and why would Moore be associated with criticism of Latvia precisely at a time when his mayor is signing trade agreements with them? The plot thickens...):

Sunday, May 20th, to take home a treasure or two.
Those who drop off items on Saturday get tickets to the "Preview

Pick-Up will take place on Sunday, May 20th from 12 Noon to 2 p.m.
Certified school teachers are also welcome during this preview

Don't know the exact address, but the home is on the west side of the street, and it's one of those small houses that doesn't even have an alley behind it. The garden in front is beautiful, and obviously the result of lots of hard work and thought. So I said "Hey, your garden is beautiful, thanks!" without even breaking cadence on my bike. She said "Thank you!" and I kept on going. But this made me think about how much work so many of our neighbors put into making their homes so lovely. Sure, they get the exercise, and enjoy the creativity of the work in the garden, but everyone who walks, rides or drives by gets to enjoy their work.
So, say thanks to any gardeners you see. They make Rogers Park more beautiful and so deserve our gratitude.

Kelli Lifelong West Rogers ResidentCP, Urhausen is awesome! My family has been going to their nursery since I was little. It's just north of Pratt, just east of Crawford, right across the street from the school. It looks like it's just someone's private home, but then you'll see they have a gravel driveway that leads back to big, beautiful greenhouses. They are so friendly and knowledgeable, and their prices are more affordable than Gethsemane.
Happy Gardening, Neighbors!

Gethsemane is great; excellent variety, quality and helpful staff. A little pricey but worth it. Urhausen is equally as good but in a different way. A little out of the way but superb value and awesome selection. Staff is extremely helpful. They get five stars from this RP Gardener.

To tell you a little bit about my history, I have been running for almost 8 years, having done a few 1/2 marathons and 3 full marathons. I'll be working toward full-marathon shape this summer for the KC Marathon in October.
Of course, I don't expect everyone to be at my level, and I'm sure there are many of you out there who are way better than I am. I am just looking for a group of people to run with, even though we may not be running together -- that is, meet up and start together, end together and go through other important stretches and drills, even if the running in-between is different paces and milage.
Please let me know if you're interested!

@joseph I have a weird running schedule since I'm training for Ironman Wisconsin in September and I have to fit my run in with my biking and swimming, which is why I'd rather join a group of runners rather than have runners join me. It's just really complicated. But, here it goes:
I currently run Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday but Tuesdays I do a lunchtime run at work downtown. Fridays I do a 1 hour run in the afternoon and Sunday early in the morning I do my long run. All other days are short 30 minute runs before or after a bike ride.
Looking at it, Friday afternoon or Sunday morning would probably be the most consistent days for me where someone interested could join me. Fridays are 1 hour runs with some speed work peppered in and Sundays is currently a 1:30 or more long slow run but time will increase during the summer to 3 hour runs.
My pace is currently in the 7:50 for my 1 hour run, low 8's for my long run.
-
I live in RP and I am planning to start training for my second marathon this summer. I would love to find someone to do my speed work training with. I neglected this element last year and I feel I really need to improve and I would also love to do yoga if anyone is looking for a friend to join them!

One of my dogs is a chubby little guy who doesn't like to be touched but Dr. Carlson is magic with him. I also have an older grouchy cat who adores Dr. Frank. There used to be 3 vets but Dr. Bell moved out of state so that may have been the reason they weren't taking new patients. The staff is caring and compassionate, and wonderful with my pets, whether the appointment is due to sickness or just a wellness check. I no longer live in walking distance and don't drive, and the staff is never too busy to arrange cab service home for me (American Taxi is the only cab service I know of that will take larger animals, and I always carry a sheet for the backseat). I recommend Howard Street Animal Hospital without reservation.

Sticker Removal is fun.
Rule Number One - Let the Chemicals do the work,
whether you use WD-40, Goof Off or Lift Off, let the
chemicals sit there a few hours FIRST.
Even ok to let it sit overnight and then can rewet it
with WD-40 the next day and let it sit a few minutes
Rule Number Two - Use a decent putty knife, I prefer
Richards 2 inch size, nothing too SHARP.

time to get good at this, and its not TOO hard
Try not to gouge the sign, Im not perfect but with practice
you will do a good job and no one will notice many
imperfections at all.
Rule Number Four - Use a ladder when needed, I use
a light aluminum one, BE COMFORTABLE,
and do this in the daylight
Rule Number Five - Say hi to neighbors, thats the most fun
part of it all is saying hi to your neighbors and observing your
neighborhood, (the other day I saw one lady walking different dogs
separately, she said she had 4 and had to do it that way,
otherwise she couldnt handle them)
Thanks in real life is worth atleast 5 on everyblock
