Summer Options for 6 year old child

I'm looking for daycare options for my 6 year old for this upcoming summer. I work from 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday. The Neighborhood Boys & Girls Club doesn't start until 8 am but I have to be at work by 8 am. I need to pick up as late as 6 pm on some days. Any suggestions/recommendations for high quality group childcare for a 6 year old in the area? Looking for entire summer, not just short summer camps. Thank you!

  • mike Return Chicagoan circa 1996

Hamlin park offers day camps during the summer that I have sent my boys to. It's not too expensive and you need to sign up online. It is offered through the Chicago park district.

Thoughts on Bad Dog being Gone?

What are the thoughts on Bad Dog Tavern being shuttered?

  • They were always understaffed for lunch on that patio. Only one server for a LOT of tables on weekdays. Also, their kitchen vent clearly hadn't been cleaned for a while and there was a grease stain about 8 feet long along the exterior wall facing the patio. Just gross.

  • Botkin Kinch: the knife-blade

I got the worst food poisoning of my life from their ahi tuna tacos. It was a very memorable experience.

Missing campaign signs

Someone took the two campaign signs off our front lawn as well as our neighbors, very odd.

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

Not odd, just standard Chicago politics

  • Who were the signs for?

  • Before or after the polls closed? If it was after, please let me know who the signs were for, I'm voting for him/her next time. I'm sick of all the campaign trash that candidates leave all over the neighborhood, especially outside polling places and around the el stops, and never bother to police up.

Butt of your joke?

While you may think it funny to deposit cigarette butts on someone's stoop, I find it tragic. Neither my wife nor I smoke and we don't appreciate the deposit of cigarette butts made on our front porch. Please kindly make a timely withdrawal. Oh, and an apology might be warranted on this one.

  • Teamharman Back from the sunny south

Again, it was a specific act of someone (one of my wonderful neighbors) collecting butts and placing them on my stoop as if my wife and I were their long lost owners. I'm passive aggressively shaming them here as I don't know who the culprit(s) was/were. Neither my wife nor I smoke.

  • Oh, I miss understood. That's just wrong!

I've reviewed the published agendas of both the Zoning and the Housing committees from August 2014 through January 2015 and could find no mention of this address for a zoning change or any other city council or committee action. Because of the election, there will not be any city council meetings or committee meetings in February. There is a Housing committee hearing scheduled for 3/11 10am and two Zoning Committee Hearings next month: 3/12 and 3/17 , both staring at 10am in Council Chambers, before the 10am 3/18 City Council meeting. No agendas for these committee meetings are available yet. Shortly after 3/1 some of the agendas for the March meetings should start to appear. You can check the web site:
https://chicago.legistar.com/Calendar.aspx for any additional committee meeting dates, changes in times/locations, and the meeting agendas. The current or new alderman for the ward may know more about the property before any hearing action. The press coverage about the property are old stories at:

On Friday February 20, 2015, the Chicago Zoning Board of Appeals listened to more than 5 hours of sworn testimony and evaluated piles of documents, exhibits, and arguments in favor or in opposition to the issuance of a Special Use Zoning permit to locate a medical marijuana dispensary at 2843 N. Halsted.

Rules of evidence applied. Both sides were represented by skilled counsel. Indeed MedMar had numerous attorneys.

All together there were about 30 witnesses, most of whom were skilled professionals, including many the Board recognized as highly trained experts. Everyone who attended had an opportunity to speak. The MedMar case started at 3:15PM and ended at 8:25PM.

The Zoning Board of Appeals voted 4-0 to deny the Special Use Zoning application at the 2843 N. Halsted location.

Since MedMar won a State license to dispense medical marijuana, it’s believed they now need to find a more appropriate location within the limits of Lake View Township [approx. North Avenue north to Devon; Lake Michigan west to Western].

MedMar has the right, should they want to stay with the 2843 N. Halsted site, to file a request for administrative review [appeal] in the Chancery Court of Cook County.

Hey folks, anyone know of a good fish fry in the area??

The Irish American Heritage Center on Knox has all-you-can-eat fish fry during Lent on Friday nights - the rest of the year, it's single order. Their building is beautiful and there's a lot of other stuff going on there - dance, music, art - worth checking out.

  • Definitely try St. Ferdinand's! Not an "all-u-can-eat" but very good size portions, with all the sides! Weekly theme night with entertainment for the whole family!! But above all, the fellowship is what makes it so popular! Nothing like being a part of the true meaning of the Lental season!!

Yesterday they tore down the old Alley building to make way for a proposed 80 unit development. These images are where the iconic Alley mural once was.

I first went to The Alley as a 20 year old kid; unsure of herself but bound to become otherwise. I bought a $99 leather biker jacket that I think they were running a sale on so I could afford it. It was heavier than hell.

I still have that jacket; and every button, scuff, and scratch on it represents the journey I took from there to here. It is a prized possession.

As my daughter navigates her road of discovery, I still go to The Alley to get her funky socks, leopard patterened shoes, and fingerless gloves (her favorite). I want her to know that she has room to be different, independent, and creative as she practices kindness, respect, and humility.

The mural being destroyed leaves me sad.

Do you have a fond memory of The Alley? Something that you look back on and smile?

  • Never yet been kicked off a thread, but thanks for the well wishes. We're going off-topic here though.

The following is now known:
A 4-story building with retail on the first floor

6 parking spaces with one being a handicapped spot

The project will be presented by the developer to all that attend the West Lakeview Neighbors meeting. See the renderings here:

I appealed last year through Commissioner Gainer's office and they got me over $1000 reduction. Her assistant, Abin Kuriakose, did everything and it was super easy and free! Dear Alderman Pawar,

THERE WERE OVER 20 NORTH SIDE ALDERMAN IN ATTENDANCE LAST NIGHT, including big names like Alderman Mell, Moreno, Fioretti, Smith, Colon, Solis, Waguespack, Cappelman, etc.....

BUT WHO WAS NOT IN ATTENDANCE.....? Alderman Pawar

Our elected "advocate" was nowhere to be found.... and as a result, the 47th ward had no elected representation at this crucial Ward remap meeting of 20+ north side Alderman and approximately 1,000 concerned citizens in this standing room only community meeting (the article said 400, but there were way more people there!).

You would think as a rookie alderman, Alderman Pawar would fight even harder to prevent the 47th ward from being "carved up" by the more senior neighboring Alderman.... but "Mr. No Show" decided this meeting wasn't important enough, and that we can "call 311" if we have a problem with our changing Ward Boundaries.

One of the largest community meetings regarding the redistricting of Chicago's Wards took place last night at DePaul University's Student Center. This meeting specifically focused on the LACK of advocacy and voice north side alderman have had in this redistricting process, and because of it, many of our traditional Wards may likely see dramatic changes if these proposed maps are selected (see tribune article).

Concerned residents of these North Side Wards were on hand to voice their opinions, and share their disdain with the current proposed maps: "That was in evidence Wednesday night, as more than 400 people, including more than 20 aldermen, turned out for the first public remap hearing at DePaul University in Lincoln Park."

Your response would be appreciated :)

Quickest list I could get were old political threads and post to them. I, again, am not supporting Fiedler at this point. But I want the debate, the discussion, the followup questions. Again I want to know how the Uber ordinance was so good for the taxi system now in place, and beyond the techinical differences, how are cabs differnt from Uber, how will Uber revenue be collected by the city, will the city take any revenue hit by favoring Uber over cabs and, wait for it, allow a cab driver to ask that question to both candidates. I think that even if the route, location or day/start time of the parade are not changed, the parade length may be changed. Better control of the large gaps in the parade, which were not solved by eliminating the sharp "V" at the Halsted/Broadway intersection of the old route with the new more linear north to south parade route. UI think that the 2014 parade had something like 250 separate entries. The parade organizers may want it down to 200 or so. perhaps have government officials walk or ride in cars side by side , rather than single file. The more combining of organization entries, to take up more of the width of the street, like the marchers for the gay-friendly churches, Placing social services together, one marching on one side of the street and another on the other side could shorten the parade time without reducing the number of parade entries much. The musical floats/buses/marching bands, will need to be kept separated so as to not compete much., but the streets are large enough for side-by-side marching units, if not cars.

4 copters hovering over E Lakeview 1/31/15

12:30pm -Looks like about Belmont &Sheffield?

Any info?

  • Oh dear; I was just being hyperbolic for amusement's (and alliteration's) sake. Or trying unsuccessfullly to be at any rate. The Belmont Redline station seems to be ground zero for much of the crime that's so ably reported by the Crime in Wrigleyville & Boystown blog (CWB). That was my first thought when I saw the helicopters hovering yesterday over that general area.

    I apologize for the confusion!

  • Oh, hahaha. I'm a little a slow today. Gotcha. No worries. That's good news!

Does your multi unit building recycle?

Apologies if this is old news but thought it was interesting site. If you want to report a multi unit building of five or more units that doesn't recycle (not for punitive reasons - just to help document the extent of the issue) this website is set up to do just that http://www.mybuildingdoesntrecycle.com/about

  • SBloom architect, dad and a half, 25 years north side

Wow. I just checked out the MyBuildingDoesn'tRecycle website. Lots of multi-units in the hood that are not recycling. Thanks to those who submitted reports. Shame on those non-compliant building owners.

  • The year is 2015, but appearently the waste industry or the entire Country can not develop a machine that can sort trash? Or could it be that it is cheaper to have a bunch of people sort it for free and feel good for doing so?

helicopters

Anyone know why there are helicopters over the neighborhood Saturday?

  • GCV New to North Center

I was wondering the same thing. One was hovering over my house for a good 10 minutes and then flew west.

  • Definitely weird

Stop signs are not optional.

I know this is a recurring theme here on EB, but come on folks. I've watched numerous kids and parents walking to/from school nearly get hit by people coasting through intersections by Bell. It's only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or killed.

There's a certain expectation as a pedestrian that a vehicle will come to a stop at a stop sign. Rolling through a stop at 20+ MPH is not acceptable in any scenario. Period. Do some pedestrians walk without looking? Absolutely. But that is another conversation all together. When you are operating a vehicle (motor or otherwise) on a public way OBEY traffic rules. Period. If the intersection has a stop sign come to a complete stop. If the intersection is marked no right on red, don't turn until the light changes. If the speed limit is posted 30, drive 30 (or less). You're arriving at your destination a couple minutes earlier is NOT worth putting yourself or others in harms way.

Monthly parking spot needed please

Would anyone have or know of a monthly parking space for under $140 per month between Grace(3800N)-Montrose(4400N) and the Lake to Graceland Cemetery? My nephew is starting his lease in the 800 block of Cuyler next week. Posting here because I can't seem to get the Buena Park neighborhood to come up for posting. Thanks so much.

Try the garage at Halsted Flats. It's just south of Grace on Halsted.

  • Try calling Scotland Yards, they have a lot at the corner of broadway and buena ave. you do have to call multiple times as they have weird hours and they take a bit to call back sometimes. There's also a parking garage at the apt building at the corner of buena and hazel, I believe they are called Buena Shores. Another place is the parking lot on Clarendon and south of buena ave, I believe they offer monthly parking as well.

Christmas Tree Disposal

Do you know the proper way to throw out a real Christmas tree? Can it be put in an alley next to the garbage/recycling cans?

My neighbor asked me this question and I'm curious what the answer is.

  • RT Here

It's a shame to see all these folks still dumping trees in the alley.

  • Holly 15 year East Lakeview Resident.

I live in the Dakota building and we had 5 trees thrown in the alley. They sat there for weeks. If you are gonna buy a tree be responsible and know how to dispose of it properly.

Michael Diversey's Closed?!

Darnit. I noticed the restaurant closed. I'm a bit surprised as it was always pretty busy. Anyone know if something new is going in? I hope so. I don't like the empty spaces on Diversey right now.

The middle class is in sharp decline. Even immigrants, especially the Chinese, are moving back to China for better opportunities. The educated classes of other countries are not moving to America. They have it better in their home countries.

@ Li - about the only solution to your/my problem of which I know is to find a man dumb and desperate enough to marry me. It's rough out there for singletons, especially economically.

New Restaurant?

I just walked by the Town Hall apartments on Halsted and Addison and noticed what appears to be a new restaurant getting ready to open up in one of the retail spots for that building. Does anyone know if this is actually a new restaurant and if so what the scoop on it is, or is it perhaps some facility that is there for the tenants of the building? It seems to look like to me it may be a restaurant because it also has bar seating and the decor of the place as well.

  • Gregory Morrow Employee at Center On Halsted

Hi! That facility is part of the Center on Halsted's new Senior Center complex. That space will be used to serve senior lunches or for other senior events. The lunch program is administered as part of the City of Chicago's Golden Diner senior lunch program. The old police station itself will soon be open as part of the Senior Center, it's going to be very nice!

  • Gregory Morrow Employee at Center On Halsted

Addenda: the Senior Lunch program at Town Hall is not just for building residents, it is for all neighborhood seniors 60 and up. There is another Senior Lunch served at the Presbyterian church down the street, at Addison and Broadway.

Stolen vehicle

I watched a flat bed truck race up my alley (3900 block between Hoyne and Hamilton) with a black Jeep looking vehicle hanging off the back at 3:20 am,Monday Jan 23, 2012. When I ran to the alley and put a bright flashlight on the truck, the driver made a very wide turn westbound onto Hamilton knocking over several dumpsters in the process.

I called 911 and gave a description of what I saw, when I turned the scanner on, I heard the call go out across the 19th district, but didn't hear another thing about it.

If this was you vehicle stolen, contact me via EB and I will get back to you.

  • Anyone heard where they are dropping them recently? Mine was stolen a week ago from River West, have been searching craigslist and just drove up and down Wolcott along with Diversey and Damen.

    Kevin

  • My 2011 Ford Fiesta was stolen from the 3900 block of Oakley last night or early this morning. What's funny is this is the second time this happened to me on this street, last time was a black 2002 Jeep Liberty back in 2006, and it happened on a Sunday-Monday as well.

  • Any news agencies such as yours conducting their own?

  • Noel Montenegro Photojournalist for NBC News

I cant speak for the other stations. I dont think we are. We dont have access to the legal tools to find out what people are really concerned about. Mainly if the owner of the building is the owner and installer of the recording equipment. And if the owner of the building has anymore recording equipment in use in any illegal way. That would require warrants for search. Police have to do their due diligence and burn some good old fashion shoe leather.

Why hasn't there been anything about the coming Via Lima Peruvian restaurant on Lincoln Avenue?

Seems like every other new restaurant in North Center/Lincoln Square gets covered by DNA Info or Chicago Reader or Chicago Mag, but there's silence on this one.

  • Jane Spec North Center resident

Thanks LisaMV! I have learned something new! Much appreciated.. I honestly didn't think there was antisemitism hiding in the new Peruvian restaurant, it was just right after that news story had come out that I saw it and thought oh no! All that money spent on this ceiling and this has the potential to cause a real stir..I will see the design in a different more positive light now :)

  • Yep, definitely a symbol of peace the nazis flipped to serve themselves. I took a tour of the Buddhist temple in Chinatown and asked about it when we saw the symbol
