Muskie's Closing

Sigh... Another institution bites the dust. Muskie's (corner of Lincoln/George/Lakewood) is closing either this Saturday or next Saturday. They are renters and the owner wants to do something else with the property. The cleaner next door also has to close soon.

Methadone clinic!

Yesterday, there are flyers going around in the neighborhood concerning a new methadone clinic being opened on Belmont Ave. and Oakley .I called the 32nd Ward office and confirmed this. This is not a rumor but a fact. I don't understand this type of business being allowed before asking the residents first. Not saying that people don't deserved to be helped but maybe in a medical district might be an appropriate setting. Also I understand that the State is responsible for allowing this zoning regulation to happen. This makes me very nervous , be aware.

  • OK it looks like the Alderman is working on this, so the information earlier about his non involvement appears to be cleared up. Email from W as follows:

    Dear xxxxx,

As the Alderman for your neighborhood, I wanted to reach out to you with information I have recently received about the opening of a new drug and alcohol treatment center at 2329 W. Belmont. The location of the treatment center was formerly in the 1st Ward and has now been redistricted to the 32nd Ward.

Upon receiving the news that a clinic was opening, we checked the legal requirements for the clinic. The clinic is licensed and regulated by the State of Illinois and the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency, not the City of Chicago. The property was already legally zoned for health uses such as a clinic. I have also met with the owner to discuss her plans and operations and addressed concerns from the neighborhood. Included below is information about the center's mission and the owner/operator.

The center is run by Dr. Anjali Gupta, a former oncologist at the Univ. of Chicago who is board-certified in addiction medicine. She is currently the Medical Director at the Gateway Foundation of Chicago - http://recovergateway.org/

  • An email was sent out today to all RVN members, and RVN & HPN came out strongly against this clinic with a letter to Waguespack, Cullerton and Williams. They recommeded all neighbors voice their opinion to these 3 as well.

Addison porch robbery

I called police Friday, about 2:00 p.m.
after witnessing a male, black, with short dread locks, about 20-25 years take a package off a neighbor's porch then walk east on Addison street. He hung out at the bus stop at Addison and Wolcott, let the bus pass by, then crossed the street to take the package. As far as I know he wasn't caught.

  • This has happened to us 3-4x in the year that we've lived in Roscoe Village and a couple of times, it's occurred within minutes of the UPS truck leaving. The truck must be followed.

  • ChiJen, that is exactly what is happening. These thieves track delivery trucks, knowing that they will leave packages in unsecured locations if no one answers the door. I avoid UPS deliveries if at all possible because of this. I've never had UPS do this.

If you are having an item delivered by UPS delivery and suspect you will not be home to receive it, leave alternative instructions when you place your order for an item: "If no response at delivery address, please ring any apartment in bldg (or specify another apartment #)" or "If no response at delivery address, please deliver next door (give exact address)." I believe if you give an address close to yours, they will deliver as requested. At the very least, leave an instruction NOT to leave the delivery in an unsecured location.

I just found out the Albany Park branch is closing in June! They are going to demolish the building and build a new library, but the librarian I talked to said that process could take up to two years. I know we have Sulzer nearby, but AP was quieter and faster when requesting books online.

City Dough Space

Does anyone know what is happening with the City Dough space on Sheffield/Wellington? It seems like it has been closed for a while with little to no news (and I am starting to OD on Panes...).

  • I miss Pompei too. It was so popular and good. Why did they close? And is there rumor they are coming back?

  • The rumor I heard about Pompei was that the owner sold the location to DMK with the rights to still operate the location as a Pompei. Then for whatever reason they decided to close it.

Saw a promo for a Food Network show that features Ribfest. It's on Tonight (monday, aug 25th) at 9:30, "Eating America with Anthony Anderson". I assume it's our Ribfest since I could see my building in the background.
I also saw on DNAinfo that Bartoli's will be featured on the Cooking channel's, "Bite This with Nadia G." tonight at 8:30.

  • To me, asking where you grew up (ie. in the past), I think it's fine to generalize. Or if she said "here", that means anywhere in Chicagoland to me. It threw me because the woman was almost rude about it. No need for that. You're right though...New Yorkers are pretty snooty about the B&T crowd.

  • I had a friend who used to tell everyone he was from the south side of Chicago, and by south side he meant Hammond, Indiana. C'mon.

XIPPO (Bar @ Damen/Grace) - Noise Out of Control!

These Xippo patrons are out of control. I can hear them coming a block away, then they congregate....And get louder and louder. I've called the police but of course they're gone by the time/if they show. Plan on letting the alderman know about it.

  • Thanks for the heads up, Kevin. I never even noticed the sign changed back to Xippo until you posted (I live across the street from the bar). They 'appear' to have closed up shop for the past year with the exception of the occasional paint and wine party. It's been blessedly quiet ever since and it's been a joy. I hope this isn't a sign that their loud, obnoxious Eurotrash dance parties will resume and once again destroy our neighborhood's peace and quiet.

  • Wow I didn't know EB brought back the old posts too.
Still a few drunks passing through, but it's much better now that Xippo is gone.

Nah, not without there actually being a permit posted. But from the commencement of underground work, to completion? You really think that can't be done in 5 months?

Of course, the whole situation reinforces the view that it's impossible for a business to get things done in Chicago--if a large-ish, local, business like Malanti's can't get things to happen, then who can?

But then, it's also possible that they like to do a single project at a time, and while the Oak Park Malnati's opened basically on time, the West Loop one (where Ina's was) appears to be a bit behind schedule. So that might be the main delay.

In any case, barring acts of god, or too many plane shadows cracking the slab, there's no reason that they can't go from actively starting underground utility work to open in 150 days.

  • I hope I lose my bet.

McPherson School Campus Project

Construction on the McPherson School campus and playground will begin next week on the west side of the school. The west campus will include new walkways, landscaping, play spaces, play structures, and will be designed to improve storm water management on the campus. The east campus will include new walkways, landscaping, outdoor classroom space, a small performance space, a Little Lending Library and a variety of seating areas. The work on both sides of the school will begin in August and be completed around the end of September. If you have questions about the project or want to learn more about the school, please email kim@friendsofmcpherson.com.

Hi Kim - this is great to hear! Was the funding from CPS or a 501c?

  • Thanks for your question. The project is funded through a combination of state, local TIF, Aldermanic menu funds and donations from private donors. No CPS funds are being used for this project.

  • There is also a video about the project posted on the Friends of McPherson website. Phase I, which includes the playground and play spaces on the west side and the east campus landscaping redesign, will be finished this year. Common signs to watch for:

•Abnormal fluid accumulation within the body
•Excessive thirst or urination
•Potential injury to the kidneys
•Tremors

Mothballs are pesticides that slowly release a gas vapor to kill and repel moths (and their larvae) and other insects. Mothballs are also used to repel snakes, mice, and other animals, though this use is not recommended and can be harmful to pets, children, and the environment. The chemicals in mothballs can be inhaled, absorbed through the skin, or absorbed through the stomach and intestines. Cats are more sensitive to the toxic effects of mothballs, but dogs are more likely to ingest mothballs. Clinical signs of mothball poisoning include vomiting, mothball-scented breath, pale or brown gums, weakness or lethargy, difficulty breathing, tremors, seizures, and organ failure (e.g., liver, kidneys).

If you suspect your dog or cat ingested mothballs, contact your veterinarian or Pet Poison Helpline immediately for life-saving treatment advice.

In home piano lessons?

Can anyone recommend a piano teacher for my beginning level 7 year old? We'd like to have someone come to our house once a week for about 45-60 minutes.

Thanks
