Michael Diversey's Closed?!

Darnit. I noticed the restaurant closed. I'm a bit surprised as it was always pretty busy. Anyone know if something new is going in? I hope so. I don't like the empty spaces on Diversey right now.

Although they are still looking for a storefront within walking distance of the old store, they are inviting people to shop at their new store, now open, at 3325 N Ashland across from Whole Foods.

Shoppers will be made aware of their store at 2705 N. Elston near Target and their store at 1590 N. Clybourn. The Clybourn store is near the Apple Store and the Red Line stop. The block has a reputation for "apple picking," so hold onto your smart-phone.

In the same shopping strip as their Elston store will be a medical marijuana dispensary at 2723 N Elston, next to the mattress shop where they can take a nap. The parking lot is often full. After the pot shop opens, parking may be tight as some people may drive there, park, forget they drove, and walk home. Only kidding, they'll be too stoned to walk.

None of the above will replace our neighborhood store within walking distance of Diversey/Clark/Broadway.

Just seems like this is too nice/affluent of an area for vacant properties for this long. A few lots farther south on Lincoln I see they are building something though... anyone have insight or knowledge of what we can expect there? Also the vacant lot kiddie corner from there next to the Paulina Brown line stop? I heard there might be a Walgreen's going there over a year ago but it is still just vacant land... just curious!

  • L

The SE corner is getting a development that includes a hamburger joint. There are other posts here about it if you search. The corner next to the L was supposed to get an apartment building, but nothing has been announced about that for a while.

  • Mixed use retail on the SE corner. RKF is the broker. You can Google news about it.

  • Thanks to posters above - I've been wondering the same thing recently, it's very noticeable now with all those vacant storefronts in what I would think is a pretty great location (affluent area, proximity to the El, plenty of foot traffic.) Plus that maternity store on the NE corner is also closing.

I did some googling and found the following:
    http://www.rkf.com/rkf-arranges-2985-sf-lease-for-bareburger%E2%80%99s-first-chicagoland-restaurant/

Looking forward to the new look to that corner next summer!

Accident at Irving and Bell?

NPR reported this morning an accident involving a pedestrian at Irving Park and Bell. Does anyone know anything?

  • I heard the same thing; they said car vs pedestrian. I was driving north on Western at the time. As I crossed Irving, there was no sign of emergency vehicle activity on Irving, so it must have been on Bell. There are a number of elementary schools over there and often parents and kids walking at that time of day. Hope everyone is ok.

  • I live right there. I get so annoyed at how fast some people turning off Irving drive down Bell. There are a lot of pedestrians on this block, including young kids. I hope everyone is OK.

  • CJL ...

Really bad at dropoff and pickup with the non-walking St Bens' parents. Notwithstanding that it's mostly "their" kids walking there.

I've done this twice and have had trees planted both times. That being said, I'm saddened to see so many homeowners, especially those who live in two million dollars homes, who just don't care about newly planted trees. When the trees were planted in front my building, I babied them for months on end. And I rent. I have nothing to gain by taking care of the trees other than making the world a prettier place. Trees make me tremendously happy. :-)

  • Andrea, replacement trees have been planted, (and babied, at least ours!). But even though they let you sort of choose - I think I remember them giving us a choice of three varieties - there's no guarantee you'll get what you ask for (we didn't).

Andrea, replacement trees have been planted, (and babied, at least ours!). But even though they let you sort of choose - I think I remember them giving us a choice of three varieties - there's no guarantee you'll get what you ask for (we didn't).

I think the city could do a bit more outreach about the matter - making sure home and business owners know the care that is required, and that if they don't do it, it won't get done. Just hanging a flier on a door doesn't really do the trick. And some people think if the tree is planted by the city, the city will do follow-up care (and watering???). Or if it's an absentee landlord situation, there's no specific go-to person to provide the care and it comes down to whether a resident (like you!) takes it on.

Anyway, if you're reading this thread, please take care of your trees! And try to get the city people not to give them those high and tight haircuts, and don't cover their root crowns! Yay, trees.

helicopter over Lakeview east

Anyone know what its about?

  • Stephen Boisvert Lakeview pedestrian

Also curious. My wife just came back from a run and said police had part of North Sheridan blocked off. Oakdale or Wellington (possibly) to Barry. I thought it was construction lifting but the copter looked like an emergency helicopter.

  • Ryan C. 15+ year Lakeview East resident

When I drove to work this morning, there were flatbed trucks parked along Sheridan at Surf. They were loaded with what appeared to be large external wall panels for the new St. Joseph's Hospital building. I suspect the helicopters are either hoisting the panels into place, or observing the cranes which are hoisting the panels.

  • ab lake shore & barry

The helicopter was picking up large, variously-shaped objects from the roof of the Hallmark building and offloading them lower down to the north of that building. They appeared to be construction materials and were hooked to a cable suspended from the helicopter. It was very efficient; each load was hooked to the cable in just a few seconds

I highly recommend Noel Heneghan 773-297-9153. He is a very good plumber. He's trustworthy, thorough, easy-to-work with, responsive--he always either answers my call or calls back quickly and always comes to do the work quickly. His fees are very reasonable. He's the father of five, so he understands the importance of getting the plumbing back to work quickly.

I see that once again some group has once again attached Christmas trees to the lightpoles around Lakeview. BTW...my examples are EVERYWHERE. Almost 40-50% of new construction and existing storefronts on busy streets in the entire north side are vacant. Open your eyes.

The cash situation is a real problem, I agree. But it will go away very soon. There are plenty of local solutions (i.e. Banks that do not operate outside of the state of Illinois, and therefore not afraid of federal laws on the matter, rulings from the office of the comptroller of currency, or RICO statutes) that will sprout up soon. And once the fees are fat enough, national banks will wade in, lobby for regulatory permission (which is starting to occur already), and then this debate about large amounts of cash will go away.

For those of you who argued this point, I am curious whether you would be capable of changing your mind if these patients and the dispensary itself were using credit? I live close but not close enough to worry about the cash problem. So I am open minded, but I seem to be in the minority on this EveryBlock thread.

"I live close to Southport and go to Dags, Newport, Crosby's, and Einstein's. I enjoy shopping at Francesca's and working out at Southport Fitness."

"I live in lakeview so I do walk to the Southport Corridorat least once in two weeks. Tango Sur, Deleece and Crosby's kitchen are my usual choice for food. I also like the coffee and cakes at Julius Meinl (I was there today), ice cream at Jeni's Splendid ice cream and for drink I go to Mystic Celt."

Who makes this couch?

I'm trying to find the manufacturer of this used couch I bought so I could buy a matching 3 person sofa. By looking at the logo, does anyone know who makes this couch? There are no labels on the couch itself.

  • You should try posting this question in the Advice section of the interior design website/app Houzz; that forum is crawling with people who may be able to help. Good luck!

  • Awesome! Thanks for the tip!

Try uploading the pic to tineye.com. It's like a "Shazaam" for pictures.

Development near Lincoln and Roscoe

There are 5 vacant, contiguous buildings on west side of Lincoln just south of Roscoe...One of the buildings (which was formerly a thrift shop) is undergoing a major construction, rehab...Does anyone know if there is anything in the works there?

  • New England Seafood Company is there and very good--a lot of people miss it I think--but the grilled salmon, lobster rolls, fried clams and clam chowder are all terrific. And they're the only place in town that sells Faroe Island salmon--it's the best I've ever had.

  • there are actually a few decent dinner spots in that corridor that are easily overlooked. we also love new england seafood company, and pho's thai cuisine is amazing! northdown is a great brewpup too. that block definitely needs a facelift but the planned development looks so out of place in this charming community. it's really nice, but so suburban looking! it will definitely change the character of this neighborhood...even though i'm happy to see development and some interesting-looking additions.

Lost car keys

I didn't notice I dropped my Honda civic car keys outside in front my house when i parked this morning, while struggling to free my baby from his car seat. I noticed they were missing when i had to leave and pick up my son from school. If you happen to find or picked them up while walking on 3400 block of Leavitt, please let me know. I have no spare key. :(

New Development

Anyone have any idea what is going up across from Whole Foods off of Ashland Ave. between School and Henderson? Just curious, thanks ahead for any info!

  • I'm almost surprised there's not a starbucks going in there...there's one on Lincoln, but its much less visible... I think any kind of decent sandwich place or restaurant would do well there,,,I guess we should be happy that its not just another bank...

  • Had my hopes set on a restaurant. I've gotten kind of burnt out on everywhere else to eat in the neighborhood. Oh well.

Western And Diversey intersection

Any know when the construction in the intersection here will be over? Traffic is insane.

  • didn't realize we preferred empty brownfield sites and industrial wasteland to high density condo "garbage"

  • Actually nice open CLEANED fields is better than the cheap cinder block condo sht they have been building over there. Now with Lathrop coming down; I say turn it into a public use park; not more high density condo garbage. Almost nothing condo wise has appreciated over there in value at Western/Diversey/Wolcott/Riverwalk in 5-10 yrs for a reason~

Recycle dry cleaning hangers?

Anyone know of a place or organization interested in reusing the hangers from dry cleaners. I can never bring myself to throw them away.

  • Hello! I live in Logan Square near Bang Bang Pie and would love to take some wire hangers off of your hands for a classroom project I am planning! If you have any please let me know a time we can meet, I'll give you a nice Thank You Card from a student :) THANKS

  • Thanks Jamie. The store I mentioned always tells me to take as many as I want.
