Homemade Pizza Company closed all locations

RIP #HomemadePizzaCo. Looks like all locations are closed, and their Facebook and Twitter are deleted. This is an L3 building so we'll see what happens next.

http://southportcorridorchicago.blogspot.com/2014/05/rip-homemade-pizza-company.html

  • Matt 10-year Lakeview resident

They must have left some food behind because the Southport storefront is now littered with dead flies...such an eyesore, creeps me out each time I walk past it on my commute. Shocked that the chain closed, they must have overexpanded--this location had a line of customers every evening.

  • Personally, I never understood the business model. I bought pizzas from them twice and stopped after I realized I could get a pizza made, and delivered to me for the same price as this place. Did I mention that the delivered pizza was already made? I didn't have to cook it myself.

I found them to be overpriced for what they were offering.

Police cars & cyclists at Lincoln & Irving Park

There were a couple of police cars and a group of cops talking to some bicyclists at Lincoln/Damen on the north side of Irving Park by the Starbucks around 5:00 this evening. There was no ambulance, though I could have missed it, and didn't seem like there was a car involved. Anyone know what was going on?

  • UptownGirl Moved, so technically I'm now RavenswoodGirl.

A young man (looked like a teenager) was cuffed and placed in a police car. I was sitting in the Starbucks, and another patron said he thought the kid had stolen a bike or attempted to steal a bike. The officers were talking to the bicyclists and looking at bicycles for quite awhile. No one in the Starbucks seemed 100% sure what was happening, though it went on for awhile.

July 4th Fireworks at Belmont Harbor

I seem to recall that there was a pretty impressive fireworks display around Belmont Harbor either last year or the year before (or both). Does anyone know who was responsible and whether it is planned again this year?

  • d3 NOH

in years past, L, there has been a multi-thousand-$$$$$ show that was better than any small towns' organized fireworks.... these weren't just the random fireworks you see there as well, it was a half hour production complete with grand finale etc.. Not sure if this was "organized" or not but there were definitely people saying it would happen, prior to it happening. I wasn't around there last summer but there def. was a spectacular show the two prior years.

The question is, will there be one this year? I haven't seen anyone talking about them. You can always go to Winnemac park.

  • Suspicious package (meaning some random box) in the street at Damen & Cullom. I didn't have a good angle on the intersection from my window to see what they actually did with it, but they really treated it like a potential bomb. Steamboat is right that its all just residential, so no idea what the target would've been.

That's what being part of a community should be - watching out for your neighbors, your neighbors watching out for you. It makes for a better, stronger, safer community. The mentality of "it's not my problem so I'm not going to do anything about it" is what is really dragging our neighborhoods down.

The organizers of the 2012 Chicago Gay Pride Parade have agreed to delay the start of next year’s parade following outcries from leaders and parishioners from one of Chicago’s oldest Roman Catholic churches because of concerns that it would interfere with their Sunday masses.

Parade organizers said the 2012 parade will start at noon in a statement Wednesday.

Leaders at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church at 708 W. Belmont Ave., said that the parade’s new route would cause parade attendees to block and interrupt their Sunday mass, which is scheduled at the same time as the previous parade kickoff.

The controversial decision to reroute the parade followed this year’s massive turnout of over 800,000 attendees, which presented challenges for the Chicago Police’s traffic management and crowd control. Organizers intended for an earlier start time, at 10 a.m., to curb drinking.

The pride parade is held every last Sunday in June.

Yes, God gets his way and makes sure it won't rain on our parade. I was honored to March with my church and we gave it right back to the fine folks from Westboro, we outnumber you and are louder and prouder than your cheap speakers. Westboro, is that a city or church, who cares. They have a long ride back on their short bus and we have not gotten around to filling the potholes for a reason. I am already preparing for next year at the same time they are praying to their false gods that I don't ride with the firemen next year. I would have 10 men holy men of each denomination bless all the water in the fire truck and I will accidentally push the button to make it rain on their parade. Bring an umbrella because you are in Chicago and the weather can change any minute in the windy city. Next time read the whole bible and slash the tires on your bus Westboro before you come to our city. Can I get an Amen??

Parking Secrets and Tips

Hi neighbors. We are in the process of moving our kids' art and sewing workshop from Roscoe Village to Northcenter (3907 N Damen.) There is a lot of road construction in the vicinity taking place until July 17 which consumes most of the local street parking. Most parents drop-off and pick-up for no more than 15 minutes max, usually less. Any suggestions for the interim (and while we await our new Standing Zone?) Thanks in advance!

  • CJL ...

It's not ideal, as it's up the block, but you might ask MB if you could utilize a few spaces in their lot temporarily. Community's driveway + loading zone is also pretty spacious, and their timing of use might mesh with your need.

I joined EveryBlock a few weeks ago because one of my neighbors said this site gave some good community alerts like recent crimes, construction updates, etc. And initially I found it helpful. However lately it seems like a complaint forum for "old bitty" types of issues like dogs peeing on flower beds and "does anyone know why there were fire trucks outside of a building on a very stormy night?" Not sure if this is the usual for this website but these kinds of posts seem a little ridiculous. Sorry if I insulted anyone but just not the kind of info I was looking for when I signed up.

311 has an attitude bigger than the giant graffiti on my neighbors house

Not only am I completely disturbed by the horrible vandalism on my neighbors house near Wolcott and Addison, but I'm also disturbed by the attitude of the 311 operator. I reported the graffiti online, but 311 told me in a very rude fashion that only the owner of the vandalized property can call.

  • Catbus Philosopher, Third-Class

"If the 311 operator hangs up on you, there's no reason that you can't call back" -- other than the fact that you have to sit through a two-minute voice mail recording before even getting into the queue for an operator.

  • Joan M. Back in Lincoln Square and liking it.

I think the folks who lecture graffiti and tagging haters on its artistic value most often do not own their own homes, like Philip says he does, and, indeed, may not even have stepped up to renting yet. So I always like to suggest that they offer up their automobiles to the street artistes, or any items they've so far accumulated which they especially value - musical instruments, stereos, whatever - to the spray-paint-toting locals.

Building torn down

I was just walking down Elaine Place yesterday and noticed they tore down the only two-flat building on that street. Anyone know why? The building was always looking to be in good condition from the outside with people still living in it recently. It seems a shame if they're going to put up one of those new structures rather than just keep the old building up and renovate it.

  • If you search "Chicago Building Permit Status" you can find out what permits have been issued. You need the exact address.

  • Danielle C Bradford New to Chicago from WI

Well, there was serious damage since the pipes burst in winter. The structure was not sound, and was unsafe for habitation. The owner of the building opted to sell it, and a three flat condo will be going in its place. I agree, the design will probably stick out like a sore thumb, but none of the buildings on Elaine were properly maintained the last few decades, so it is probably the fate of all of us.

I called 311 and then backed up and took the alley, but the alley was partially blocked by yet another truck.

I called Alderman Pawar's office to report the problem. Just wondering if the rest of you have encountered this and if you have additional ideas for solutions. Thanks!

It's not just tradesman, what irks me is the amount of cars I encounter double parked on sides streets everyday. In most cases parking is available within a few yards, yet people think it's okay to partially block (or sometimes completely block) the street because it is a bit more convenient for them or they are just too lazy to parallel park. Yesterday I had to sit and wait while someone had a conversation with a double parker. This person was standing in the street talking to the double parker who was sitting in the drivers seat. They looked at me and continued talking as I waited. Then this person finally moved out of the street so I could squeeze by the double parked car. As I passed I could see a very large parking space just 1 car up from where the double parker was double parked. I wish it didn't annoy me so much, but it does. It's just so inconsiderate.

Friends, as a long time resident of West LakeView, I have seen building after building torn down, 30 year old vacant lots become towering, brick, lot line to lot line 3 story single family houses, the list is endless.

This is what happens when a neighborhood has been deemed trendy, desirable, and the influx of residents pushes occupancy to the limit. Long gone are the factories, industrial avenues and lumber yards that provided jobs and goods. In 1978 I could pull up in front of my house with a full size Ford LTD any day of the week and street park
    no problem.

So welcome to the 21st century. The influx of residents continues. I just have to get used to it. As new homes are being built the alleys get blocked. The street gets blocked. The water pressure drops. Just maybe the house you live in was a street and alley blocker for someone else not so long ago.

Roscoe street resurfacing

Street resurfacing signs are up on the 1600 block of Roscoe (between Ashland and Lincoln)

So glad that those darn troublesome potholes will be gone soon. My neighbors and I have taken to call that section of Roscoe as "Rocky Roscoe" due to loose rock debris.

Also, signs are up on the 1600 block of School (School and Lincoln)

Here's a link about street resurfacing
http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/cdot/provdrs/street/svcs/residential_streetresurfacingprogram.html

  • Would be nice if they could resurface Fletcher and Paulina where the water company just dug up the entire street. It's like the old west over here with all the dust flying around.

  • I live near Fletcher and Paulina also. Agreed. We've been saying we live on a gravel road now. We can't even open the windows without dust from the gravel getting on everything in the house.

  • finally! that half-a$$ed job they did a couple months ago to fill the holes had absolutely zero impact.

Tiki Bar...have one you can part with?

So we are hosting a fundraiser for our kid's school and the theme is Hawaii. If you have a Tiki Bar that we can borrow, rent, etc. shoot me a response. I would appreciate it. Will need it for one night only, next weekend. I am in North Center and am happy to swing by and grab it just about anytime. I posted this in RV as well. Thanks!

Just wanted to thank all who responded. I was able to get two Tiki bars! School made good money, neighbors were able to enjoy some nice Luau music and the ambiance of Tiki torches.

It *is* going somewhere, and there *are* plans. Most likely not this year, that is true. But even at the first presentation, the time frame was "2013-2014".

Also, I would bet you a dollar that, once demo starts, it will be to the point of resurfacing the main route of Western within 45 days--not "finished", bc there will be lots of other reconstruction of the intersections, etc, too, but re-opened that quickly--so if the funding comes in 2015 (likely, I think) the viaduct will be gone in 2015, too.

And nothing is likely to happen with the empty lot (which was the initial question) until the viaduct comes down.

Lakefront : new track & field construction - Wilson Ave

Just wanted to pass this along to my fellow Lakeview neighbors.

The Chicago Park District is building a new running track and soccer field at the Lakefront by Wilson Ave in Uptown.

Here is the sketch: http://james46.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Lincoln-Park-Wilson-Field-and-Track-Site-Plan.pdf

Looks like a worthy project. The existing soccer field over there seems to already get a lot of use. So, I assume there's high demand for more fields.

There are other projects on the lakefront that I personally (selfishly) would rather see. I guess for now I'll just continue to do my best to avoid running into pedestrians strolling along the bike path.

What are your thoughts?

I wasn't aware this project was taking place until last week when I rode past the construction site. How did I miss the announcement? Anyone else surprised to learn about it? Perhaps it was off my radar since I'm not on Alderman Cappleman's newsletter email list? It's got me wondering how much this cost the city and how long this project has been in the works.

Peoples Gas - Accelerated Main Replacement Program

Dear Peoples Gas,
Can you please tell me:
1) Who is paying or funding this city-wide upgrade?
2) Who is the contract holder?
3) Where can the specifications, standards, special provisions and general notes for the pipeline upgrade be read or obtained?

  • I received a letter (with a pamphlet about the pipeline upgrades) last week, asking me to call to set up an initial appt with Peoples Gas. I called today to set up my initial appt. But in the meantime, I received a nasty-gram in the mail today from Peoples Gas, with a big red box that says, "NOTICE PRIOR TO DISCONNECTION". I realize they are trying to motivate people to make the appointments, but sheesh!

  • I have also been really upset about the length of time that PG has taken on Wrightwood and Central Park. I left the country and it's STILL incredibly bumpy and not safe! The cones keep getting moved but I've seen nothing done at all there! And of course, more of...

I have also been really upset about the length of time that PG has taken on Wrightwood and Central Park. I left the country and it's STILL incredibly bumpy and not safe! The cones keep getting moved but I've seen nothing done at all there! And of course, more of Central Park was torn up further north on Diversey (I haven't seen people's gas cones so I can't speak to if that's their fault or not). I've called 311 about it too and still well over a month with a bumpy Central Park! It's not safe and it's very annoying. What will be done? How soon??? Please stop tearing up the streets and leaving them to have people harm themselves.

Car break ins on Hamilton

Wanted to make everyone aware that cars are being broken into around Hamilton and Byron around 3pm while parents are picking up their kids from school. We have not noticed increased police presence despite multiple reported break ins and local residents have not been informed. Please spread the word!

Over the Memorial Day weekend they plastered buildings along Byron, commercial and private, including Concordia Church. May be that they are trying to establish a presence here. Keep an eye out and report any activity to the local CPD beat office as well as the alderman's office. Police presence here seems to have been reduced, we need to do some community policing of our own. George F makes a good point - this may be someone who lives in the neighborhood, or attends school here and knows the area well. Don't confront - identify and report.

  • This has happened at Queen of Angels a few times as well. Smashed window, purse stolen.
