I would like to see Sullivan and Kolzar submit articles and photos to the BPN and get rejected and then post the photos and articles on social media telling us that the BPN refused to cover them. It would make for a great impact and it would once and for all prove the point that the BPN has a very big stake in the election but for only one person!

The more they see this guy the more they will just go with the flow and just vote for him. What kind of marketing is the Sullivan and Kolzar campaigns doing outside of social media? Direct mail, signage and a very agressive campaign in Bridgeport is needed to get Balcer and his lazy administration out! My property values are low, I have to drive out of the neighborhood for shopping and entertainment and I am tired of boarded up store fronts!

  • Thompson has a lot of bad rap, which will hurt him in this election. It depends on if people come out and vote. Kozlar has a good chance to defeat Thompson, but it will be interesting how he goes about in debates or forums against Thompson. I love that this is not a boring election!!!!!!!!

  • Kozlar has a very good chance to win - but I agree with you - we need to unite and vote. Politics use to be boring to me but this election has my attention lol

2015 budget hearing for McGuane Park

This is our annual opportunity to request events for McGuane for 2015. Last year we requested Sunday hours and swimming on Sunday and got it. This year we would like to request music, dance and team sports. Please consider attending this budget hearing and supporting McGuane. If you have ideas for events, please post them here and/or attend the McGuane advisory council meeting at 6pm the first Monday of each month at the field house. The budget hearing is tomorrow, Sept 30, at 6:00 pm Fosco Park, 1312 S. Racine.

  • Mary, how do you think the meeting went?

The nice girl who manages Donovan Park told us tonight at the toddler art class that it'll be getting a nice new water feature for next year. She thought that might be through some sort of other funding though.

  • Mary 17 year Bridgeport resident

Sorry I didn't get to see you; the reception ladies couldn't tell me if you were there. I think it went well for McGuane. How did it go for McKinley?

Holden is great! The teachers are excellent, funny, and caring for each students' education. The students, although a bit hyped up, help each other in a good and environmental way. I am an 8th grader attending Holden and so far, this grammar school experience for me as been an excelling, fabulous, and marvelous trail for me. Excellent school!

Found Dog!

Found! Male chihuahua & miniature pincher found without tags in the vicinity of 32nd & Lowe. We took it to the shelter to check if it was microchipped but unfortunately it is not. If you believe that this is your dog, please email pics to january@jackalopecoffee.com. FYI I have also posted this to the Lost Dog Illinois site, Craigslist, NextDoor.com, knocked on a ton of doors near 32nd & Lowe, and stopped by the shelter to see if anyone has reported this dog missing. Thanks!

  • January Lifelong Bridgeport Resident & New Business owner

Hey everyone! Thanks for the help! A local foster that works closely with the local shelters has taken him in and if no one claims him she will adopt him. Thanks again!

Garage break in

Someone broke into my neighbor's garage in the 3400 block of Emerald last night through the side door. Seemed to target the car; cracked passenger side window, smashed driver side window. They didn't take anything and he had a bike, a portable heater, a radio. But they did about $300-400 in damage. He had to go to work, but hopefully he reports it when he gets home.

Your neighbor will need to make a police report to give his insurance company. Since there has been a rash of garage break ins, CPD may send an evidence tech. He should also take as many pictures as he can--again for his insurance company. Then talk to neighbors--they might have seen or heard something--one may have a camera. The financial state of the city is what it is and there is little we can do about that except pay more in taxes. What we can do is watch our blocks, install motion lights and cameras and be good neighbors. If you do not have a phone tree for your block, set one up so when problems arise your problem gets lots of 311/911 calls. Calls for service do matter as do signed police reports and community impact statements. Unfortunately, we have to play the numbers game and be squeaky wheels to get more police and prevention programs out of city hall and get the laws we have enforced..

  • 2 broken windows is not enough damage to dust for prints.

Bed set disposal in alley?

Guestroom is being converted into a nursery so I quickly need to get rid of a full size mattress, box spring and bed frame that are currently being used in there.

Salvation Army was a bust -- apparently they only take new items now.

If I leave it in the alley before trash day, does anybody know if streets and sanitation will be able to take it?

Hi all! I am interested in any and all information on the neighborhood. We are considering buying a home there next spring. We currently live in the nw side and don't like it, too suburban. We are a family of four, we have a 2 and 4 year old. Safety? Friendliness? Schools? Any information would be great!

Everyblock vs Nextdoor in Bridgeport

I have my favorite but would like to hear what peeps up in Bridgeport think.

If you could only use one, which would you choose? ...and why? Which do you find to be more informative, to have better features, community outreach, support etc? ...or is there another social neighborhood network you prefer to use? ie Facebook, Yahoo Groups, Foursquare

To help compare, i put together a chart:
http://w11.zetaboards.com/InsideNextdoor/topic/10057749/2/#new

For those who are not familiar with ND, but curious, here's an invite link:
https://nextdoor.com/invite/uncptzzbfxscgxxppmuw

Note; ND is a private social network that requires some hoop hopping to get in. To give you a look inside, here's a news interview i participated in last year that covers some of ND's features/uses. http://s3.amazonaws.com/TVEyesMediaCenter/UserContent/225985/2355534.6402/WLS_09-21-2013_23.45.59.mp4

  • Todd Agosto Analyst/Investigator at Veritatem Cognoscere

Thanks for the feedback Erik. Even though the invite link assumes you're from my neighborhood it should work just the same. From what i understand, invite links make it easier for peeps to sign-up, requiring less hoops to hop through.

  • Erik H Loyola & UofC alumnus, Chicago Loot Drop charity

I actually sort of like the hoops. It goes with what I've heard of as more of a "curated" set of users.

Special Olympics at McGuane

Plan a walk over to McGuane between 9 am and 3 pm this Saturday, Sept. 27, to cheer on the children participating in a bocce tournament. And be sure to bring a few dollars to buy a raffle ticket or two and buy some great treats from the bake sale. This is your opportunity to take a walk on a lovely day, meet some amazing kids and support our Special Olympic program at McGuane. It is said it takes a village to raise a child and I am betting that the villagers in Bridgeport will make this a success. McGuane Park is located at 2901 S. Poplar. The bocce courts are on Poplar just south of the field house.

Thompson 42%. Kozlar 38%. Sullivan 15%. Tominello 5%.

This is just my opinion on the poll results if the election were to be today. Many nearby friends feel it'll be Thompson and Kozlar in a runoff. I give the candidates props for running. I can't wait for the debates between them. Anyone know when and where the debates will be? No negativity please, let's keep it positive and give a shout out to your favorite.

  • True - there are no candidates at the moment. Let's see who actually files and who survives the objections to the petitions after they're filed. I've already seen one circulator tell potential signers who don't live in the Ward that their residency doesn't matter. That's incorrect and will invite closer scrutiny when that candidate's petitions are challenged. That's also a very expensive process that few candidates can afford.

  • I am in somewhat agreeing mode with Jeanne. I like Thompson but am learning a lot of good things about Kozlar. Found his website this morning www.johnkozlar.com and was impressed too. Still ways away from election, but liking what I see.

Ro - I agree with many points that you brought forth, however since I am a home owner that lives on the corner I find dogs and their feces and urine to be a big issue. Yes, parks are more than just for children - agreed. Other animals do their duty on the grounds as well. That's the natural environment we live in. BUT after spending a good amount of money to lay sod on the side of my house and see it destroyed by dog feces and urine is very upsetting. Not to mention us and our visitors stepping in to the remnants that some owners refuse to pick up. I have even had dog walkers argue with me telling me it's a parkway. Well who pays to maintain the "parkway" . . . me! I have a grass cutting service and I'm sure they are fed up with this as well. My point being is this: If such actions can be eliminated, why don't the dog owners take their pets by THEIR house to defecate? Why take their dogs by another person's property to do their - including recreational parks, etc. I personally would not have a dog in the city for this reason. I don't want to be dependent on taking a dog to exercise at the risk of the dog needing to empty itself by someones domain. Enough said as far as my opinion goes.

Cindee--On behalf of all the dogs and their people who try to do the right thing and live peaceablly with our neighbors, I profusely and abjectly apologize for all the grief and misery you have suffered. I find the irresposible dog walkers as reprehensible as you do, right up there with the rest of the populace who consider all of the outdoors to be the appropriate place to drop their trash. Bottles, cans, fast food wrappers, plastic grocery bags, and all other types of refuse just thrown on the ground. And it seems trash attracts trash: if there is litter strewn about people are more likely to just add more; it a place is litter free, it is less likely that someone will just discard their empty coffee cup or burger wrapper on the sidewalk or in the gutter. But this is taking us off topic, so I will say no more.l

Dunkin Donuts 31st and Halsted what happened?

I was on my way to work this morning and get on the Halsted bus at 31st. I noticed that Dunkin Donuts was closed? There was paper all in the window's and a sign on the door. I didn't have time to go read da sign because the bus was coming. Does anybody know what's going on? I know they were remodeling the dining room by the restrooms. TBH I am a Starbucks guy and don't really go here. But I don't like to see a business especially in Bridgeport fail.

  • GRD GRD

They also have other drinks besides coffee. My FIL loved the Frappuccino drinks, I thought they were sugar coma concoctions, and the hot chocolate is good.

Definitely better than a vacant store, and it adds to safety. More businesses, more eyes on the neighborhood, it encourages people to get out and walk even if they're not going to that business.

    Vacant storefronts=Blight.

Looking for a good dog training class near Bridgeport

I have an adopted dog that is six months old. She has lots of energy and very little discipline. I know there are a lot of online how to's out there but I would prefer a structured class for both myself and the dogs benefit. PetsMart at Roosevelt and Canal offer training but the reviews say it is hit or miss depending on the trainer. Does anyone know of an alternative nearby?

I see that there's a new Zaytune sign at 35th and Western. I assume that this is a new one, not the one on Morgan in Bridgeport. Does anyone have the scoop? It's a great place.
