Pallets

Gardening time and I'm in need of 2-3 pallets. If you know where I can pick up some for free or cheap, please advise. Thanks so much & Happy Spring!

  • Bob Long time resident

Wallace around Root/41st, there is a business that has them stacked up. I don't know if they sell them to the public or how much if they do

  • Around I55 and Cicero southbound on Cicero make left at first street I think it's 43rd st. A few blocks east of Cicero there used to be a big pallet company. I don't know if they're still in business.

  • FYI. Be careful when you get off hway. It used to be cha projects. A lot of thugs hanging out.

landscapers noisy equipment

the landscapers in the area have extremely loud equipment ie leafblowers, etc , there goes the peaceful bliss of a beautiful day grrrr

  • Jennifer Bridgeport to Bucktown and some places in between

Living in the city - anywhere - it's going to be noisy. Unfortunately, if you want quiet, you will need to move to the suburbs or the country. It's always been this way and probably always will.

  • Kevin S. #Bridgeport # Southside

the noise I was making scraping the ice sheet off my car windows this morning was crazy loud. Hopefully last time for the month but doubtful.

How do you feel about the firefighters?

Personally, I doubt that we are getting our money's worth from these city employees. First, they work 24 hours on and 48 off -- who really believes that they are working 24 hours? All this schedule does is allow them to sleep on the city job, then go out and work another one since they are so rested.

Second, why does the city not share data on the amounts, types, and outcomes of fire department calls? At least with the police, we can get an idea of what kind of reports are being made, but where can we go to find out what the CFD has accomplished? How many fires have you had in your neighborhood? I know of only 3 in the past 19 years, at least 2 of which were the residents' fault -- failure to clean out dryer lint, and putting things too close to space heater.

I would rather have the city put money into creating a video game that shows kids, teens and adults how to prevent a fire, what equipment to have in the building to deal with it, and what to do if one starts.

Perhaps some of you will be CFD boosters, and I welcome your stories. But before you laud them for their bravery, please think about all the news stories where the individual who saved someone in a fire was a family member, neighbor, passerby, or even the cops on patrol.

  • If you want to save money for the city cut the number of alderman we have way too many and most do way too little

I'm no firefighter but I know some ... have visited several firehouses and I have been in firefights for over 24 hrs ... 24 hours with only brief periods to catch your breath ... and when you DO catch your breath its only smoke and death .... 24 hours with only water ... no food ... no sleep .... no nothing .... but fighting ..... its not easy and its not fun ... My feeling is that it takes every minute of 48 hrs to recuperate ... only to fight again .... 48 hrs is not a lot of time to recuperate after 24 hrs in a hellish inferno ... There ARE times when fireman can go to work without getting wet but YOU NEVER KNOW!
I have over 40 yrs working with military personnel including 6 in recruiting field ... 1 (1986) as the top recruiter in Chicago ... I've enlisted people for 6 years (now 8 is the Military Service Obligation.
Some never left the States and got a 4 year college degree in their spare time .... Some 'bit the bullet' in less than a year ..... When you apply for Police or Fire OR enlist in the Military ..... you JUST NEVER KNOW!
POLICE and FIRE are WILLING to RUN IN when everyone else is RUNNING OUT!!

What is going to be built here?

Does anyone know what is going to be done at 3124(approx address) S Shields Ave. It seems like they are doing to tear down the factory/warehouse there...I don't even know who owns it now...Advance something or other....(is the name I think) Anyway I live on that block and am curious as to what is going on with all the excavators and bulldozers they are using there this week.

  • We own property down the street from this location & would welcome new homes w/open arms. The property has been an eyesore for a number of years & we could not get the owner to clean it up. It's better vacant than what was there.

  • i live directly across trom this site and they are definitely digging a huge whole and getting a foundation for something started. perhaps they will build homes like the ones on the opposite side of Stewart (ST/alley/whatever it is) If they build that then the people will all have their own garages and parking on Stewart street behind their residences also. So the parking should not be to problematic, except the property taxes will go up again.

What about a hotel instead of a heliport?

Jumping off the Balcer/heliport thread, what about using the site instead to put up a mid-level hotel, like a Choice or Marriott property? There is nowhere for folks from out of town to stay nearby that is decent and reasonable. If we have guests come into town they end up going downtown or out by Midway. Our apartment is too small to accomodate overnighters. The location is convenient to Bridgeport, Sox Park, IIT, Chinatown, Pilsen, Mercy Hospital, the loop, UIC and the West Side Medical Campus, with great public transportation available, especially if they keep the proposed water-taxi stop. Just wanted put the idea out there for consideration.

  • Ro Bridgeport tailor's granddaughter

Isn't seeking investors for growth and business part of the Alderman's job? Shouldn't he find out if the people of the community want to have a mid-range hotel/motel here and then work to find a delveloper? If not at the Halsted site, how about where the Wrigley factory was? Is there anything definite about what is going to happen there? The project could include a water-taxi stop by 35th St. That would be great for Sox Games. If only I had the capital....

Ask them if they are really truly busy in the off season? Do you want this area to be like Wrigleyville....All Bars? NOPE! We already have people urinating in the street already. Water Taxi? Only water close by is the River. How do you propose that? They still need a way to the park! Do yeah really want a notel MOTEL? Might attract the wrong element. In the past week we had 2 hooker busts already! How about what Halsted used to be? mom and pop shops. Decent shops not junk dollar store nonsense. A really nice place to sit and eat a good meal. Not so hard.

Chinese Kitchen's Service

Anyone else experience the same LACK of service lately at Chinese Kitchen? Not sure if there are new owners, or just new hires. As of lately, they have either been sending me the wrong order, or just don't listen to me as I place my order at all. They just have been giving me whatever they feel like. I called to state how I felt, and they pretty much just brushed me off. I've been enjoying Chinese Kitchen's food for years, and I am now looking to find a new restaurant. Really disappointed.

Recycling

I rent a house on 31st Place. I take recycling very seriously and only put recyclable materials in the blue bin in my alley assigned to my house. However, I have been warned by the city that my recycling bin will be taken away if I continue to put garbage in it. I don't put garbage in there, so I would appreciate it if no one else would either. I really value my recycling bin and use it for the purpose for which it was intended. How can I ensure I will not get my recycling bin taken away?

We've tried that Jim. And they still ransacked the garbage cans. I guess the thinking is if there's some outside, there's more inside.

Simple solution keep it in your yard, or chain it closed till pickup day..

One hispanic teen/early 20's guy driving and another tagging some gang graffitti. Tagger was also hispanic. late teens/early 20's. Took off down alley and headed east toward Halsted.

Walking the dog is the best part of the day, catching some dopes in the act is a double play good looking out!
