Maureen Sullivan Named On 6'OClock News

On CBS2's broadcast tonight, Maureen Sullivan was named as candidate for 11th Ward Alderman in the wake of Jim Balcer's step-down.

But that's not the best part.

Incredible!

In one TV shot, the symbolism of this aldermanic race was displayed perfectly: a downtown lawyer who is taking a break from doing favors for rich people suddenly shows an interest in the 11th Ward -- and can't even get on TV in the neighborhood without doing it where Maureen Sullivan does some of her best public service work!

The article fails to mention Sullivan, the Park Advisory Council, the volunteers from community organizations or the companies who donated money and materials to the event.
As Treasurer of the Palmisano Park Advisory Council and volunteer coordinator for the event I would like to express my displeasure with the Bridgeport News. Patrick Dailey Thompson had no part in planning or funding the event. The Bridgeport News should have featured the people and organizations that gave money and freely volunteered countless hours before, during and after the event.
Those individuals, groups and companies are:
Maureen Sullivan – Palmisano PAC President
Charles Broda – McGuane PAC President
Rob Warmowski – Palmisano PAC President
Mary Welter – McGuane PAC Vice President
Daniel Pugh – Palmisano PAC Treasurer
Jim Peters – McGuane PAC Treasurer
Preston Breuling – Palmisano PAC
Kevin Morgan – McGuane PAC
Tom Palmisano – Henry’s Bait Shop
Burpee Seed Company
Marquette Bank

Taylor Lennon
Christian Lennon
Rene Paquin
Katy Olson
Laura Cooper
Kelly Hughes
Rocio Bautista
Marsha Magala
John Magala
Rob Roichek
To anyone I have forgotten, such as the dozen walk-on volunteers Maureen Sullivan gathered at the last minute, please post your name to this thread. The 2nd Annual Bridgeport Air & Water Show was a success because of you and you deserve to be acknowledged.

  • Proud,
Mr. Thompson and his wife have three children. I don't know whether the Thompsons have any cats, and if so, whether their felines have ever claimed credit for someone else's accomplishments. But I certainly hope an aggressive investigative journalist looks into this so that the voters of the new 11th Ward can make an informed decision when they go to the polls to elect our next Alderman.

  • Although Mr. Thompson's appearance in the Bridgeport News might be considered crass (is there really such a thing in Chicago politics?), the fact that he submitted a picture at the event and Ms. Sullivan did not highlights her political naïveté regarding media. Although Mr. Thompson's appearance in the Bridgeport News might be considered crass (is there really such a thing in Chicago politics?), the fact that he submitted a picture at the event and Ms. Sullivan did not highlights her political naïveté regarding media. This should serve as a wake up call to all of the candidates that run against the machine; THEY need to get their names out there....everywhere. The Bridgeport news gets delivered every week to every home in the neighborhood for free! Use it, Mr Thompson will. The Bridgeport News is not going to send Woodward and Bernstein out to cover your events but that doesn't mean that you can't take out space yourself. If I were Mr. Kozlar I would make sure I ran a picture of myself with that ball field....before someone else does.

A friend of mine just got back from a ward meeting tonight, and said with Balser getting old in age and with his past and current health concerns, he will not be running again. I think they made this decision for a main reason that Kozlar is a strong candidate and would more than likely win or force a run off against Balser due to numerous candidates running if they put him in again to run. I think Balser is a standup guy (outside of being an Alderman) and wish him the best with his health. Now the ward office has to decide who to run against Kozlar. From my stance, there top choice has to be Daley Thompson to give Kozlar a good race with competition. He is more likable than Balser, that is for sure, but I've known Pat for many years and honestly, he is not someone who does events specifically for our neighborhoods. This will be a slap in the face to many of us neighborhood people, who they assume will vote for Pat because he is a Daley. I like Pat and find him a good friend, but he already has a position as Commish of the Water Dept, already making well over $125,000 a year. I do not know who they will put in the election now, but if they want to even come close to Kozlar, Pat will have to be there man. I am waiting for more info and will update when more news brakes.

  • BTW I agree that both Kozlar and Sullivan are fine candidates, and either of them will be a win for our ward.

FYI don't forget the ward lines were redrawn to include a lot more of the area north of us.

  • BridgeportProud Proud & Loud

Whens John Kozlar gonna give us something to look at. If he's not gonna put up a platform Kozlar's no better than a VANITY CANDIDATE. Everyday we don't see something from him makes me think the real focus is on studying for his bar exam, that he takes the same week he'd start playing alderman, and have a nice line for his resume/job hunt. That’s just not fair for the neighborhood

I'm pretty adventurous, artistic and have traveled some. Very open minded, so I have no prejudices against the world except perhaps people with a lack of logic and/or reason. (Sometimes a lack of reason is the reason for making art, so even that's not completely true.) Oh and I bike a lot and play a bunch of sports but am not a jock. Thanks!

Who is running against Balcer in the next election?

Does anyone know who is running against Alderman Balcer in the next election? We need someone with a plan to build and grow Bridgeport, Alderman Balcer has proven he is not the person to move our neighborhood forward. Back room deals for development at 35th and Parnell, lack of new business, the dollar store strip of Halsted St, empty store fronts and vacant lots everywhere...what has he done? We need new blood and leadership. Does anyone know who is running?

Loud Music

What is the policy regarding loud music in our neighborhood? This last Saturday I and the surrounding area had to endure live loud music from 5:00 to 8:30. This was blaring into my house and I had all my windows closed and AC on. I could not concentrate or watch TV. I could barely hear when I called 911. These people are repeat offenders when it comes to playing their music as I have called in the past. Aren't they fined for this?

Denise you are actually right. As a person who was recently robbed, when the neighborhood as gotten use to loud music and noises which they use to call 911 for but due to the lack of response they stopped, criminals then know what area to target. Lots of ppl are robbed by neighbors or ppl actually in their building for multi units. You turn music up loud enough no one hears the breaking of the door or windows smashing. Clearly that is not your experience but please don't dismiss others as even a possibility. Some of the most ridiculous things ppl hear are criminal genius bc no one believes it to be true or possible.

The broken window theory does apply to nuisance behavior. What if the police did what the Orland park officers did? There would be less loud music banging down the street and some ppl would think about going into areas where they can't even play loud music in the car without getting a ticket. Ppl would second guess moving to a block where if a cop hears music from the sidewalk, they are ticketed and landlords are fined. Some of the biggest criminals in the city live in quiet burbs so this is not a city vc burb chat but about enforcement vs. non-enforcement.

Moving to Bridgeport (January-July 2015)

Hi guys,
I am moving to Bridgeport from Rogers Park for graduate school and while driving in area (few times a day-day, night etc) I feel this community is a lot like Rogers Park which was my goal to have diversity.

With that being said we will be looking for a place to live and we were wondering where and who to rent from. We have an awesome place up here that we will miss but 11 mile commute to UIC will get old FAST so with that being said any advice is appreciated.

  • Erik H Loyola & UofC alumnus, Chicago Loot Drop charity

The 35th stop has never really bugged me much, but I'll admit I'm used to some potentially rougher stops. I'd say it's roughly on par with the Loyola stop. Not perfect, not awful.

I had a friend recently have someone demand his phone at that stop, but the guy gave up when my friend told him, "No." So make of that whatever you will.

Meli, depending on where you live in Bridgeport, the Red Line might not be a convenient option. I live on the north end of Bridgeport and rely on the Orange Line. There are also north/south buses on Halsted and Ashland that drop off at Harrison, and if you take the Halsted bus, you can likely catch a UIC shuttle bus that loops around the campus.

As far as safety, I haven't had any problems with the 35th Street stop at night. IIT students use the Red Line regularly, and I think that the influx of students during the school year helps to make it a feel a bit safer simply by increasing ridership in that particular area. I can't imagine it's anything that you haven't seen in Rogers Park.

I learned of the recent announcement of Maureen Sullivan and like many others, wanted to learn more about her. I visited her website and was glad she had information out and platform. But the more I looked the less happy I became. I am not a fan of candidates who name call as I observe that from Segvich every election. I watcher her announcement video and went on her website, and there is nothing but bashing. I think we're all upset about the current administration (heck I even regret voting for Balser in 2011), but if you want to be an alderman there needs to be professionalism in the way you conduct yourself to the public, this does not include name calling. I also read about John Kozlar and heard wonderful things about him from my friends down the street. Again, I wanted to learn more about him. In my 54 years in Bridgeport, I have never seen someone that young do the things he has done for our neighborhood kids. I have also not seen Canaryville and Bridgeport interact that close and in good standing. Whoever had part in bridging the gap between our two neighborhoods should be commended. It seems that's a good organization down there and my granddaughter is signing up there next year. Finally will be able to watch her play some ball. Concerning this election tho, I am going to wait for Kozlar's ideas when they come out to make a better assessment. As for who I am voting for, I will look as to who the ward office puts out there. I think they are doing themselves a disfavor in having these two candidates announce first, and to this day not saying who will be running (either Balser of Daley Thompson). Either sense, I applaud Maureen and John for taking on this immense task. They are putting themselves out their to us voters, and in turn we make our own opinions. I hope the name calling will exit and so we can concentrate on making our ward a safer place, especially for our next generations. It's nice to see that we'll have a exciting alderman race. Regards, Dan

Maybe I've got thick skin, but to me, Sullivan's angle is that she's a do-something person, even without the title. I think it's fair to contrast that with the common perception of how Balcer has spent his time in office.

stevio, there is no legal requirement in the law for a million dollar policy, but yes it is a good idea to have some type of insurance. Our constitution gives us the right to keep and bear arms and everyone, regardless of their financial ability, should be able to exercise that right if they are lawfully able to do so. It is sad that the training, license and fingerprints (not mandatory) cost as much as it does because many good people who would like to exercise their constitutional rights cannot afford to do so.

As I said above, my training with firearms began many years ago in the military and suffice it to say, that I know what it is like to be shot at. There are many ways to train, leisurely shooting at paper is one method, but check out ISPC or IDPA for additional training. Also there are force on force workshops available. There are several others types of training available also. Sadly none of them are cheap which again leaves a large segment of our population with less training. There are also methods to train at home that cost nothing and should be done by all of us. It is done with an unloaded firearm and safety is always paramount.

I cannot stress enough that a firearm is a last resort weapon, but it is one that our constitution allows for. My firearms that are not under my direct control are ALWAYS secured and accessible only by my wife and I. My children grew up around them, were taught how to safely use them and they are now firearm owners in their own homes. There are no bad guns but there are bad people. My firearms have never discharged without a finger pulling the trigger.

  • @lifetime..I never said there's a legal requirement to have a umbrella policy for anything but if you're carrying a weapon, you had better protect yourself in case there's a problem and when you discharge a weapon,,there will be a lawyer seeking you soon afterwards..believe it!!! Practice..practice practice to save your life and your families. Don't be a hero that's not what ccw is about or for...be safe everyone.
