11th Ward WTTW Discussion

It isn't a competition, but still Kozlar "won". Sullivan was fairly strong. Daley Thompson got his clock cleaned. He looked sweaty and nervous.

"Walmart, McDonald's, etc are only giving an illusion of helping the econony. They pay less than living wages and evade paying benefits such as health care by carefully structuring hours to prevent the majority of their workers from being considered full-time. So those workers must also rely on the social welfare system just to survive day to day. Walmart undermines the local economy by undercutting prices to destroy competition, causing small businesses to close. They sell cheap, poor quality imported goods. The only ones benefitting from Walmart are the Walton family billionaires. No way should they be getting any tax breaks."

I for one am sick and tired of hearing the words "living wage". Minimum wage was NEVER intended to be used to support a family. Minimum wages was intended to be for jobs for those starting in the work force (high schoolers) and those looking to supplement a retirement income. Neither of those classes would normally raising a family on that minimum wage.

This doesn't excuse corporations from underpaying their employees but the term "Living Wage" is just another buzz word created by the Democrats to create social discord.

As for taxes, I would totally support a flat tax for all without any exceptions. I don't care how much you make, everyone pays the same amount, both poor and rich, individuals and corporations alike. That would be a FAIR SHARE! Sadly, since a large portion of our politicians (both sides of the aisle) get their money from tax loopholes this will never happen.

I'm getting gouged by Comcast's internet w/ forced crappy bundles. Any one find a good alternative?

Any reasonably priced internet plan from comcast forces you to buy their other useless products; how pathetic. They have only one unbundled internet product: 105Mps for $90.

RCN has the best deals but also seem to be not available in my area? strange, they claim to be available in Chicago. 110Mps for $50

I guess Att u-verse is not in my area, the best they can to is 12Mps for $who cares

Anyone find anything else?

Has anyone heard of the this place? We've been reading about various new businesses opening in the area but I haven't read anything on this lounge. It's tucked away in a secluded location on W. 24th Pl. just west of Canal and just west of Connies' parking lot. Who owns this, when did it open and what's the clientele? Is it a lounge or a gentleman's club?

Trib article about aldermanic side job issue

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-michele-smith-work-met-20150128-story.html

Above is an article about an issue in an aldermanic race on the North Side, which I offer here because 1) it mentions the aldermanic salary ($108,000) and 2) it makes one think about how many times a real estate lawyer would have to abstain from votes because of a conflict with his other job -- thus putting that other job above the interests of the people he sought to represent!

Apparently, a 6-figure salary is not enough for some of the aldermen.

Now what do you think the chances are that they return a part of that $!08,000 to the city treasury when they are absent or abstaining?? Ha Ha Ha

Also this board consists of mostly financial industry individuals with zero education related backgrounds. But they have made quite a bit of cash making deals with CPS themselves for buildings and other contracts through their own side financial interests benefiting their own pocketbooks legally.

On top of all this they can NOT be fired by anyone except the mayor himself. The city council doesnt have the power either.

I wonder if the candidates for 11th ward alderman plan to keep their other business (and academic) interests?

Thompson already declined to comment on location of the Lucas Museum. http://elections.chicagotribune.com/candidates/

Sullivan understands that Grant Park is intended to be "Forever Open, Clear, and Free" and suggested a much better location for the museum.

Solution to high cable TV bill?

I've been doing research about TV choices in our area, and I wanted to share a site a neighbor told me about: www.10channels.com.
I picked all of the channels we watch, and then the site recommended the lowest priced package from each TV company. I wanted to share this info since changing will save us money.
Can't get U-verse TV at our house, but some of you probably can. We have comcast and are thinking about going with ATT Internet & Directv. We can't cut everything because I love AMC and ESPN -- but I hate paying so much for them. Anyone have experience with DirecTV and/or Digital Antennas?

I'm just amazed at how poorly Daley-Thompson performed. He rambled, confused himself with the current administration, and failed to demonstrate that he made any substantive contribution to the neighborhood in the past ten years.

Kozlar has based much of his platform on the previous work of Maureen and had to back away from making claims to the Ramova. I'm especially concerned that he has suggested he would give away his Aldermanic allowance. That money is entrusted to the Alderman to use to serve the citizens of the 11th ward, not for pandering to particular groups. Oh yeah, it's not just naive, it's against the law.

Maureen had the best showing at this forum. Her knowledge of TIF program demonstrated that she understands how city council decisions directly impact our neighborhoods. She clearly articulated what she has done for the neighborhood and linked it to what she would like to do as Alderman.

Daley Thompson's Illegal Tax Break

It is funny how as soon as you mention Daley Thompson's illegal tax break his supporters go silent. A "clerical error" that continued for 12 years and only stopped when the BGA caught him red-handed is pretty hard to defend.

A new day is dawning- the old machine and it's old ways of doing things has got to go. Good news for the connected like DT is that they can live off of the largesse and fat they've accumulated for decades.

Whether we're talking Daley Thompson with his multi-generational connections, or Emanuel with his billionaire donor bosses, 2015 will mark a return to people power. The clout crooks are getting the boot this time.

Personally, I doubt that we are getting our money's worth from these city employees. First, they work 24 hours on and 48 off -- who really believes that they are working 24 hours? All this schedule does is allow them to sleep on the city job, then go out and work another one since they are so rested.

Second, why does the city not share data on the amounts, types, and outcomes of fire department calls? At least with the police, we can get an idea of what kind of reports are being made, but where can we go to find out what the CFD has accomplished? How many fires have you had in your neighborhood? I know of only 3 in the past 19 years, at least 2 of which were the residents' fault -- failure to clean out dryer lint, and putting things too close to space heater.

I would rather have the city put money into creating a video game that shows kids, teens and adults how to prevent a fire, what equipment to have in the building to deal with it, and what to do if one starts.

Perhaps some of you will be CFD boosters, and I welcome your stories. But before you laud them for their bravery, please think about all the news stories where the individual who saved someone in a fire was a family member, neighbor, passerby, or even the cops on patrol.

Looking for a free space to teach about the uses of essential oils

Thanks,

¡Qué milagro! Thanks again to Gary M. and Justin K. It took until this morning for me to get Trejo's attention. Instead of redigging the fence posts, we took Gary's (and his wife's) suggestion of shortening the suspended fence itself, which required welding. Trejo does excellent work but is difficult to get on the phone. Now the buckled ground is no longer a problem — the work was done this morning and the fence swings freely even with existing frost heave. Thanks to all for your suggestions....
