Internet Service Provider - RCN?

We're moving to Bridgeport soon, and are wondering if we should switch from Comcast to RCN? Comcast has generally been great where we are now, but the prices are getting expensive. They're so manipulative the way they structure their prices. We were unhappy with AT&T, so we're not really interested. What have been your experiences?

International Grill in Pilsen

For those of us who've been wondering where Chef Eusebio and Olga from Amelia's went, check out their new restaurant in Pilsen. Essentially the same menu, still great stuff. BYOB. We ate there Friday night. Sorry to see them leave Canaryville, but they're still close by.

  • R.

I went on a recent Friday night and there were no more than 5 people in there at once. The food was really excellent so I hope folks start getting the word out to support them! More affordable than Dusek's across the street and it's BYOB.

Speed cameras belong to this new digital age along with Ventra cards. We have more crime and less police and more drivers who ignore pedestrians and speed limits. Getting off the west bound Archer bus anywhere between Wallace and Halsted is hazardous because you have to cross Archer to get to the residential area. I see students do it all the time and say a prayer for their safety. The alternative I prefer is to get off at Halsted, cross over and pick up the east bound bus. Takes longer but I do not have to put up with speeding drivers who think they own the road. I would rather that drivers were stopped and ticketed by police but that isn't going to happen. Digital cameras have taken up that duty.

JL, you got "democratic" (democracy) and "republic" mixed up. What you're referring to as "republic" is a direct democracy. When leaders make decisions on behalf of their constituents, it's a republic—when the representatives are elected, it's a democratic republic.

I think John Kozlar just won this election

After 54 yrs in this neighborhood and countless elections, I have never seen a candidate quite like John Kozlar before. I am a good friend of Pat Thompson's, but after seeing Kozlar's campaign website tonight, he has my vote. This young man has very good ideas planned for our ward and is very specific. You can tell he wants to be our Alderman and goes into detail on things that I did not even know Alderman had. There is no spin on issues, he does not name call, and if he comes through on his plans, our neighborhood will be back to where it used to be when I was growing up. He deserves this opportunity and we need to give it to him. Take a look for yourself = www.johnkozlar.com It makes me proud to see our next generation step up and make a difference in our neighborhood.

Daley Thompson's Illegal Tax Break

It is funny how as soon as you mention Daley Thompson's illegal tax break his supporters go silent. A "clerical error" that continued for 12 years and only stopped when the BGA caught him red-handed is pretty hard to defend.

A new day is dawning- the old machine and it's old ways of doing things has got to go. Good news for the connected like DT is that they can live off of the largesse and fat they've accumulated for decades.

Whether we're talking Daley Thompson with his multi-generational connections, or Emanuel with his billionaire donor bosses, 2015 will mark a return to people power. The clout crooks are getting the boot this time.

Petition to improve train viaduct sanitation

EB user Michelle Fennessy posted this Change.org petition to the Pilsen neighborhood. Since Bridgeport has viaducts along the north and east sides, I figured it was worth posting here, as well. I know we have complained about the state of viaducts previously here on EB.

You can view and add your name to the petition here: https://www.change.org/p/chicago-city-and-railroad-officials-maintain-viaducts-to-keep-safe-and-healthy-for-residents-and-visitors

Won't someone please think of the helicopter people?

I know when I'm voting this whenever that I will have one thing in mind. The health and well-being of the helicopter people. People born half helicopter. I know that they will promise us two things: a helicopter in every driveway, and six chipotles for every resident.

"Vote for the helicopter people. Vote for trust. Vote for the helicopter people." -Al Capone

  • next time, just take ONE hit and see how you feel.

  • This comment is way too anti-hovercraft and way too pro helicopter! Someone alert the admins!

How can anyone be an anti-hoverdite? Yeah, I get it, them make loud noises as they cruise between the river and land, but that's the price we pay for badassery. I will personally hand out ear plugs to anyone scared of a litter hover craft noise for 30 seconds a few times a day!

Public Townhall Forum for 11th Ward Aldermanic Election

To the 11th WARD! News!

Bridgeport Alliance will be hosting two public town hall forums as the vote for a new 11th Ward Alderman approaches. Details to be announced. At present, BA leaders are reaching out to other community organizations and institutions interested in involvement and participation in the framing and building of the event. Organizations interested should contact info@bridgeportalliance.org. The next planning meeting will be in mid-September. More info available upon request. Thank you!

  • Ro Bridgeport tailor's granddaughter

I would like the candidates to also address business development: What type of businesses do you think we need in the 11th Ward, especially along Halsted St.? How do you propose to attract them to our community? How will you work with and support local existing and future small business owners?

  • humanstructions B & R Bridgeport Armour School 1965 - VN 1971

Wish list for Special Rec program at McGuane - can you help?

The Special Recreation program at McGuane Park has a wish list that neighbors can help fill. If you do not know about this program, here is the link to the CPD explanation:
http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/programs/chicago-park-district-special-recreation/

The program leaders wish list is for Clorex wipes, hand sanitizer, kleenex, aluminum foil and paper napkins, plates, bowls and cups. If you can donate any of these items please drop them off at the lobby desk at McGuane Park field house at 2901 S. Poplar. Bridgeport is lucky to have this program and the skilled staff who run the program. Let's show them the neighborhood appreciates their help and this program.
Thank you.

  • that is great news about the park I was wondering if anyone can tell me what year did the old park burn down

  • Mary 17 year Bridgeport resident

Peter, the original building opened in 1905 and was replaced with the present building in 1972. The McGuane council is collecting pictures and memories about the Mark White years and the early McGuane years and will be presenting them in a program soon.

  • I really appreciate that thank you very much

Maureen Sullivan recently filed for personal bankruptcy

When I recently heard from these blogs and from her site that Maureen Sullivan filed for bankruptcy, I lost any faith in her. Yes we all have our financial issues, heck, I am in a bad position myself in money, but I will not resort to filing for bankruptcy. The reasons why she filed for bankruptcy is her own, I get that. But wake up, I am not keen on having that person managing our public funds when they can not manage their own. I will NOT be voting for her.

  • South Loop truth Poliical activist

How dare you try to stop my right of free expression? Typical of a Daley/Rahm supporter who thinks they can bully their way through life. Well it won't happen with me.

  • Jeanne Marie Mondrella-Keating Real Esate Broker and Chicago Highrise Rep, Jeanne

Dear South Loop Activist: Please explain and by all means, be specific, on how your free expression is being stopped? I am not bullying you in any way nor am I bullying my way through life -- whatever that may mean! Sounds like there are other issues going on with you and it certainly has nothing to do with me == or anyone else for that matter --

Man Trespassing in Garage

Last week a neighbor was doing some cleaning in her backyard, had both garage doors open (overhead and service doors) since she was going from yard to alley. When she walked into her garage, she was startled by a man lurking around in the garage near the tools. She asked if she he could help in find something, he told her "no everything's cool" and walked out. Fortunately nobody was hurt. Her neighbors captured him on thier security camera and he had been driving back/forth through the alley. Brought it to CPD's attention but not much could be done since no crime was comitted other than trespassing. Description: male, thin, appx 5'7", dark skin, black baseball cap

  • Can you tell me the date and approximate time this happened.
I live down the street and have cameras and I have been searching to see what I could find and it would help a lot if you can give me a date and approximate time.
    Thanks

  • We already have a description as her neighbors were able to capture on their camera.

Theft from car on 33rd and Parnell

On Sunday morning at 5:40 someone pulled up next to our SUV and stole 2 blue pop up tents. We have it on video. It looks like he was driving alongside all of the cars with his window down checking car doors. Unfortunately, ours was open. He is a thin, white male, looks to be 6 foot tall or taller. The car he was driving was light colored, maybe silver, 4 door. Looks like maybe a Chevy or Pontiac.

  • Jeanne Marie Mondrella-Keating Real Esate Broker and Chicago Highrise Rep, Jeanne

That really stinks -- let's all try and keep an eye out for our neighbors.

  • Yes. We know the police are too busy elsewhere so if we want any chance of stopping these crimes, we need to be more vigilant. Make sure homes, porches, and gangways are well lit, and report crimes and suspicious activities immediately.
