Winners and losers in Mayor Rahm's TIF game

It's sad to say, but many of Mayor Rahm's most loyal aldermanic supporters come from wards that get the least in the great TIF scam.
Some reformers I know are a little down in the dumps after Mayor Emanuel trounced them in last week's TIF showdown.
That is, when they tried to get the City Council to force the mayor to spend some of the millions he's got stashed in his TIF slush funds on our dirt-broke public schools, most of the aldermen buckled under pressure from the boss.
Still, I don't see last Wednesday's vote as a total loss. Think of it this way—Aldermen Scott Waguespack, Robert Fioretti, Rick Munoz, Toni Foulkes, and their progressive colleagues smoked out the mayor's loyalists, forcing them to concede that they'd rather let Emanuel squander millions than adequately fund the public schools.

So at least we know where everyone stands—the boss is first, the kids come last.

He not only strong-armed the aldermen into abandoning whatever principles they might have, but also commanded them to read from the talking points his aides conveniently distributed. Other aldermen defended the TIF program. I can understand why Alderman Burnett's so effusive about tax increment financing. One of the program's central flaws is that it favors gentrifying wards, like his, over poor ones.
Thus, the program that's intended to help the poorest of the poor neighborhoods largely benefits richer ones, like the near-west- and near-north-side communities Alderman Burnett represents. Through 2010, the city spent about $197 million in TIF dollars on various projects in the 27th Ward.

In contrast, the city spent about $7.9 million in Alderman Anthony Beale's far poorer south-side 9th Ward.

Those who got, get more. And those who don't got, get the shaft.
It's pretty sad that the mayor's most dependable TIF supporters represent the wards that fare the worst in this ongoing scam.

Experienced Handyman needed for Condo Repairs

Hello Neighbors,

I am beginning the search for a new handyman that could assist with a variety of tasks around the house, from floors, to paint, to drywall, and all things in between. Specifically, I'm looking for an experienced, preferably referred, handyman/contractor who is diligent and knowledgeable about condos and have done great work. If the work is great, I could recommend the individual to the association as we are also in search for a new building maintenance person.

Price is obviously a concern for everyone, so someone who's reasonable in rates would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks all, God Bless..

Hey, Mayor Rahm—North Lawndale is good enough for a presidential library

6300 S. Lake Shore Dr., Chicago Other South IL 60637

This article has 4 other Chicago locations (Show)

Dr. King moved his family to a three-flat at 1550 S. Hamlin and proclaimed his intention to "end the slums."

I should also add that the land in North Lawndale on which the University of Illinois at Chicago has proposed to build the library is a 23-acre vacant lot, located roughly at Roosevelt and Kostner. Years ago a furniture factory stood on the site.

51st and Cottage Grove, Chicago Hyde Park IL 60637

The University of Chicago may not be the only force that shaped Hyde Park and Kenwood, but it's the biggest.

Say what you will about the illegals but you can't deny that they have a better work ethic than we do. As for prime locations for the library, UofC's definition of 'prime' favors what best serves their interests.

    @Todd Agosto

when I'm at a McDonald's staffed by Mexicans, they get your food ready as their supposed to. black folks? nothing but gossip and wisecracking while they take your order.

    i agree.
