Nanny Share/Child Care Provider

I am seeking in home child care for my 10 month old niece. Our needs are 30ish hours per week with a budget of $200/week. Anyone have a nanny share opening or any thoughts? I know it's a tall order.

  • robin in WRP Tired, very tired

You might find something here: http://www.npnparents.org/

  • Nick Da Logan Square resident

I'm legitimately curious: Is it normal for providers of child care to make so little? I would hope not, but maybe it's the norm?

I don't mean to be rude, but those numbers equate to a measly $6.67 per hour, which is far below minimum wage. I'm not sure whether minimum wage laws apply to this type of employment, maybe they don't, but I would still think that providing convenient in-home child care should earn at least a somewhat livable wage.

  • Nick she's looking for a nanny share which means the other family would also be paying. So it's more like $12 per hour. But typically a nanny makes between 13 to 16 per hour.

Something new coming to the Zacatecas spot?

I was walking by the old Zacatecas spot on Sunday and noticed that there was some demolition going on inside. The counter and paintings on the wall were ripped out. Yesterday, all of the windows were covered with paper.

I am curious about what might be going in. Hopefully another affordable restaurant or maybe a Trader Joe's?

  • Petra Z Tomatoes!

    Definitely a gym or a Trader Joe's.

    nah, probably another restaurant.

Tony's Spoiled Chicken

Spoiled chicken again from Tony's on Armitage. I know it can happen anywhere, but it has only ever happened to me at Tony's. So, you know, statistics. Grrrrr, poo. That's as dramatic as my rage gets about this kind of stuff. I do want to put some gentle pressure on them to step up their game.

This is the face of a dog who won't get her chicken and rice. ;)

Hot Doug's

What will the people who wait 2 hours on a Saturday morning outside a hot dog stand do with their lives when it closes?

Seriously people... I don't want to be rude but... really?

  • Jessica Logan Square Resident

I waited once with a friend (for what it's worth, I've been in Chicago since the 90s), we wanted one last fancy hotdog and order of duck fat fries before they closed. We also hadn't seen each other for a while so we used the time to catch up. The weather was perfect and I had a lovely time. Sorry to have harmed your mental state with my choice of leisure activity.

  • It's not just plain hot dogs that people are waiting hours in line for, for what it's worth. Hot Doug's offers really unique food that is delicious and part of the experience *is* the wait. Their customer service is great, it's good food, and it's a fun thing to do once in a while. Same reason people put their names on waiting lists for the fancier restaurants.

Gunshots this morning (Spaulding/Dickens area)?

Was wondering if anyone else heard gunshots early this morning? My husband and I were woken up this morning by them and could hear them from our alley for over the course of at least 15 minutes. I was so half asleep that I don't know what time it was, I just know that shortly after, the sun began to rise. Also, I know it's been mentioned many times on here, but what is the proper number to call to report something like this. Is it 911? Thanks!

  • Did anyone see that there was a shooting on Sunday morning at the gas station on Addison and Laramie? It happened around 3am. 2 people were shot. Have you heard anything about this incident? This violence is hitting too close to home.

  • Mel

I heard them as well. I thought it was around 3:30, but I was half asleep. I'm at Kedzie/Palmer, and they initially sounded close by. Then a few minutes later, I heard them again from farther west. Then a few minutes later I heard them from even farther. There had to be at least 10 shots.

She is well-fed, has healthy teeth, skin, and fur, and is clearly somebody's pet. She's strong though and we figure she may have bolted, somebody caught her and tied her up hoping her owners would find her? We aren't sure.

She is probably about 30 lbs, very strong but sweet. She responds to her name, and knows commands like sit and stay. She loves chicken, but what dog doesn't.

If anyone knows Jackie's owners, please respond! We have called Home Again and they have called her owners, but they did not pick up so we're not sure what's going to happen tonight. We're letting her stay with us overnight but if you know where Jackie lives we would love nothing more than to reunite her with her owners.

Her owners are an older couple and she's a strong dog who slipped their grip while on a walk. She was very happy to be home!! I'd never heard of Home Again before and it helped us figure out who owned her and they served as an intermediary to let us ensure we were actually taking her back to a safe place. Pretty cool. Morning, noon and night this dog barks and I think its been going on for over a year now. Honestly don't think or cant even fathom that I am the only one tired of this.

I have been doing research online and I thought there was a Barking Dog Noise Ordinance, or some sort of Dog Barking nuisance law for Cook County/Chicago but I can not locate it?
I don't want to call animal control, but fear that Its my only option - plus after my research, is recommended.
Calling 311 or 911 isn't going to solve the problem. Asking the owner nicely to control the dogs barking will be taken care of first, I just want to make sure if things keep going south, I have the correct recourse.

There may be an underlying behavior or health issue here. Dogs with separation anxiety will bark constantly when left alone. Sometimes the owner's are not even aware of this issue until told by a neighbor.

Another issue is senior dogs with dementia type issues can bark far too often. I have a 16 year old dog and in the last six months or so she has really increased her barking. She's having some doggie dementia type issues.

Just wanted to mention a couple of these possibilities as may help the conversation w/ your neighbor.

Abandoned home full of dogs?

I was walking my dogs on a new route this past Saturday morning and passed by a deserted-looking house that seemingly contained a pack of barking dogs. I know what two or three dogs sound like; this was way more than that, and it was particularly strange emanating from such a dilapidated home.

I could be mistaken; just wanted to see if anyone else had a similar experience on Sawyer, between McLean & Palmer.

  • I think it is or another one is 2116N. Sawyer. A friend reported 2116 to ACC and not sure if anything happened. Upped it to PETA-political comments unwelcome-they actually show up and mediate or offer to take dogs. The garage has an orange unsafe sticker.

  • Ha! 2053 N Sawyer is not under renovation, the owner just slaps on new siding & what-not to hide the holes in the building. It's very dilapidated & infested with rats. One almost ran over my foot a bit ago when I was walking by. There are dogs that live on the first floor, their owner is fantastic & they're taken care of but I do worry about everyone that lives in the place, it looks like it's about to fall apart with a good wind.

Obscure No Parking signs going up on Wrightwood

Seeing someone put up "No Parking" signs on Wrightwood for this weekend (starting today) around Avers, Hamlin. One of them stapled to a flat tree stump - pedestrians can see, but not cars. Pretty dumb considering there's a tree right next to the stump prime for posting.

2 loose dogs- not friendly

I was taking out trash when a white and tan pit (not a mix) and a smaller shepherd/terrier mix (black and tan) barked and charged at me. I got inside my gate in time, but they kept barking at me with their heads through the openings in the gate. Is someone missing them? This was on Albany near School street. Please be careful when out walking.

  • I would call Animal control and not be super quick to say aggressive. That's their open license to shoot, you aren't sure they were aggressive and even if they are, the police may identify someone's pet by accident and shoot them.

  • Charging dogs _are_ aggressive. What if this was a child walking by?

2600 W. Corland - CHA Building Rehab?

Hello: I've noticed the two-story building at 2600 W. Cortland is undergoing some construction. I understand this is a CHA-owned property. Is the CHA finally readying this property for someone to live in it?

Once the rehab is completed later this year, it will be returned to leasing. The property manager for this site is currently Hispanic Housing Development Corporation. The CHA Asset Manager that oversees our contract with HHCDC is Virginia Billings."

So it looks like the property may have residents by the end of the year.

  • I am a realtor and had a buyer working for CHA looking at one of my listing this summer. Looks like they are trying to buy buildings to rehab.

I just had someone (a plumber/sewer guy) out to inspect and rod my line to the street, and we found collapsed tile under the grass in the parkway. Now we have to call the city, arrange for a city guy to come and witness the sewer guy do another camera inspection. It's not like the sewer guy is coming out for free for the second, city-witnessed, inspection, either, so I get to pay him twice!. How stupid is that? One would think that video or camera-still shots would be adequate proof to the city of a problem. Obviously, they'll either find the break when they dig, or they won't. If there's no break, there should THEN be a process for the city to recoup their wasted time/efforts, not this double-inspection process. It's a racket!

Barbs- that is exactly what we were told as well. We actually never got this issue resolved because we couldn't find an approved plumber willing to work with the city. The ones who have experience with this avoid it like the plague because they found their past experiences working with the city too frustrating and want to stay of their radar and the ones who did agree to work with us ended up not having all the necessary licenses the city requires (both plumbing and sewer). I contacted about 10 different companies before it got too frustrating and gave up. A lot of wasted time and energy and we are exactly where we started. All we have to show for it is video that the city will not look at. I hope you have better luck and if you happen to figure out how to navigate all of this please let me know!

I have had nothing but positive and pleasant experiences with Rey and I am sad that I am no longer in his ward. Thankfully I will have Waguespack who is another outsider along with Rey. Just too bad that his offices are so far from Logan Square.
