How to avoid parking my car on a street cleaning day while I'm on vacay?

I wonder if you guys have a solution to this. I park my car on the streets in Logan Square where no permit is needed. I'll be going out of town for ten days and am afraid that during one of those days they may put up "no parking" signs for cars to be moved during street cleaning days. I don't want my car towed while I'm out of town and unable to move my car.

You might suggest that I have a friend move it but I just moved here and don't know many people yet who would be willing to do that for me. So I need a different solution.

Does anyone have thoughts on this?

  • My office has parking for $2 per day. It's not in the neighborhood but is not to far from the Blue Line.

  • WindyCityJones Actor, landlord, proud Chicagoan!

I've read that if there's a street cleaning while you're on vacation you can show your flight itinerary and contest it. The whole "must move your car every seven days" is crazy but luckily not enforced in my neighborhood. There are lots of weeks that go by where I don't drive my car. That's why we have public transit. ;)

Odd Store Front at Kedzie & Grace

Just south of Grace on Kedzie (couple doors south of Christina's bar) there is an odd storefront. There is no name on the front, and it's clearly not residential. There are weird items in the store like miniature houses and cats. I've never seen anyone doing anything inside. Does anyone have any idea what this place is?

Need help moving furniture

My boyfriend and I are buying a rather large mid-century bookcase and need help moving it from one first floor apt into our first floor apt!

Can anyone recommend some movers for a small job like this? Would be best if they could provide truck in cost. Thanks!

  • Go to Menards and you can rent a truck for 17.99 for 75 minutes and about $10 an hour afterwards or something super cheap like that.

Try getdolly.com! I've heard good things about them.

Hard to believe

Such mixed feelings on how the neighborhoods changed.
At Sawyer and Wrightwood. Apparently this 20-year-old white girl has called the cops because someone hit her bumper. Two scratches maybe.

  • such mixed feelings about how the internet has changed… Some old man just spent 20 minutes logging onto the inter-webs to report a that a person, of a specific race, has called the cops over a minor crime…

  • Seriously I've got to give you negative props for pointing out race when _it absolutely doesn't matter_. If people want society to be more colorblind and less racist, perhaps they should first take a look in the mirror at their own hypocracy. Seriously, shame on you.

So what if she was blue and yellow, someone hit her car and that sucks for her. It is extremely unneighborly to chastise someone for their misfortune. Especially when it doesn't affect you whatsoever.

Logan Square workouts?

I'v recently seen people working out in a group, with equipment, on the boulevard. I also saw a couple working with a trainer another night while I was walking home on the boulevard. Are there any groups available to join like this?

I'm currently looking to sign up at a new gym but I do better with classes and guided workouts. I'm willing to pay but I'm looking for something that's finically friendly and local if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks!

  • I work for GhFitlab at 1730 N Western. If you're looking for personal training, please check us out. We offer everyone a free first session, but if you email me, I can sweeten the deal for you. Prices start at about 80 per session with a monthly package.

  • I run in Palmer Square and see someone training people in the park there, too. Would love to find a group trainer as well. Just started working from home full time, which means I left my awesome trainer in the burbs who was just $55 per session. ...

Hello Everyblockers!

Our Japanese exchange daughter from a high school program several years ago is now an Au Pair looking for a host family here in Chicago. If we did not already have an Au Pair we would jump at the chance to welcome Miyuki back into our home. She's been here only two days and our daughter and she get along like sisters!

Miyuki is visiting with us for the next two weeks which presents a rare opportunity for potential host families to meet an interview in person rather than phone or Skype. Miyuki is sponsored by Au Pair International where you can view her profile: http://www.aupairint.com/au-pairs-available-now/short-termimmediate-start/1995-miyuki-t.html

Of course we'd be happy to provide her a stellar reference, so feel free to reach out if you'd like to chat!

One person reached out by email and was curios on how the whole Au Pair thing worked, Figuring others might have similar questions I though I would post my response here, below:

In the US, basically the Au Pair program is done through a combination of the government and an agency who sponsors them. We have placed both of our Au Pairs through AuPairCare and we've been happy with them. Miyuki is through Au Pair International. Both seem like good programs.

In a nutshell the Au Pair program is sorta like an exchange student program where you take a young adult from another country into your family. They can work up to 45 hours a week on child-related tasks only (i.e. they aren’t going to cook or clean for you, just for the children). If you like travel and like experiencing other cultures while sharing your own you'll probably love having an Au Pair, as we have.

Cost wise it is not necessarily cheaper than some alternatives but it does provide awesome flexibility and convenience because the caregiver lives right down hall. You pay somewhere around $6500 up front to the agency which covers travel, training, visas, etc. Then its $200 a week directly to the Au Pair. Big bite up front then its easyier on the pocketbook the rest of the year. Some agencies will help to spread it out though if you want o,

When the time comes to start looking for an Au Pair, let me know. Sometimes our agency runs a referral program where we both get a little break on our costs.

Red Miyata Bike Stolen from Wrightwood/Spaulding area

We unfortunately/absentmindedly left our garage door open for a couple hours this afternoon and my bike was stolen. :(

The bike is a red '80s Miyata road bike with white origin-8 saddle and white tape on bullhorn handlebars. The bike is on the smaller side -- can't remember exact dimensions.

I'll be searching CL, but please let me know if you see it around. Thank you!

  • aya

I forgot to add: the pedals have cages. The bike is single speed.

  • Sorry to hear about your bike being stolen. If you haven't yet, you may want to add it to the Chicago Stolen Bike Registry (http://chicago.stolenbike.org), so that if someone (like a bike shop) does come across it, they can find it as stolen. I hope you get your bike back.

  • We lost a fuchsia colored mountain bike the same way a month or so ago in the same area.

Have Replacement Windows, Need Affordable Install

We have 5 replacement windows we want to install in our 1-story single family home. We're a young couple on a budget looking for someone who does professional grade work, but maybe does it on the side. Can anyone share what they've paid for similar work, and/or perhaps recommend contact info for a handyman or contractor you trust? Or instead anyone local you'd recommend avoiding? Thanks in advance!

  • My neighbor does an excellent job; do you want me to contact him? You can see his windows done in his home as well.

  • We've had All American Glass out twice recently to fix windows (not replace). The first fix was so quick and easy for them, they did it for free. The second time, they replace a very large broken window pane and it was very fast and very quick. I would recommend them to at least give you an estimate. We would definitely use them again.

A nice plus would be 4) actual gameday specials.

Any suggestions? I'm not feeling Logan Bar (too few TVs in bad placements--too high up). Any other favorites in the area? I don't want to keep heading over to Wrigleyville or the Division area for this.

  • Vlucx - the owners of Madison public house have WI roots, so they definitely will be playing packer games, I asked. Wings are very good and service was also great. Nice space with booths and think they may have just opened up their patio; although we know that won't be relevant very long with this weather. Good drink specials almost every day too.

  • LK

I think Brudder's on Pulaski and Addison is a hidden gem for football watching. They always have multiple games with audio, the solid beer list is a lot more affordable than in Logan or WP/Bucktown, the food is pretty decent, there are game day specials AND I always get a seat or table if I get there at a reasonable time. Plus, Vlucx, they always have our beloved Pack on at least one TV.

When you're ready and want to stay in the area check out the western "spill over" areas of Logan Square and surrounding communities, Hermosa Park, Kelvyn Park, Belmont Gardens and the few blocks just west of Humboldt Park. I ended up buying on the first block in Hermosa. These areas are actually safer, statistically speaking, than Logan Square--I suspect because there is a higher proportion of home owners. The housing vacancy rates in these areas are as low as they are in Logan Square and housing prices (while starting from a much lower point than Logan Square) are increasingly at above state/national averages. I don't own a car, and have found the combination of the Fullerton bus, the Metra, Uber, and just walking the mile to the Logan Square train stop to not be of any inconvenience compared to when I was renting on Francisco and Armitage. There's also more "big box" stores around here, including Home Depot, Aldi, Wal-Mart, also within walking distance.

I bought a house earlier this year after looking for a year in and around Logan Square at around $350K. As others have said, it's becoming increasingly hard to find something in that price range, particularly a 2-flat which is what I wanted, especially if you're going to be using a FHA loan like I did FHA=no fixer uppers, no cash only sales). Avondale is just about as, or more expensive than Logan Square already, and West Town is out of the question. The areas I was able to compete in where LS west of Central Park, Humboldt Park after Kedize and Hermosa community area and parts of Irving Park. I didn't want to move to Albany Park because it was too far from my friends and family, but that area is also affordable, particularly for two flats.

  • Thank you Bearmosa, you gave me so much info.. thanks for bringing my hopes up. Am also considering looking into the Belmont Craigin area which is not to far anyways. :)

Didn't bother calling the cops because they are worthless (shout out to all the lazy cops who get dunkin every day but don't do anything about the homeless needle camp at Kimball & 90 literally ten yards away), but here is the pencil-thin mustache-sporting tough guy who is too dumb to keep his selfies off his SD card let alone keep his phone in his pocket. City Graffiti team was out today finally and removed remaining paint from tagging and painted the garage door and it looks completely new (I swear they painted it). So i think (as most of this thread has concluded) it is most effective with a multi-pronged approach.

    1. Citizen policing - "if you see something, say something"
    2. Alert the police so they can map activity
    3. Submit a claim via the web to get the city out to remove it (and track it - i liked this better than 311 - because it is trackable and you get a job #)
    4. Follow up with 311 if nothing is happening
    5. Remove the tag to prevent countertagging - right away - (paint thinner etc)
    6. If all goes well, the City Graffiti Busters program will have garage door looking good as new (it happened for me)

They also recommended until the basement piping is repaired we could use normal sinks, showers, etc but avoid laundry machines and dishwashers. In our lease it says we have use of the washers and dryers. Since they are out of commission until this situation is resolved, am I out of bounds for asking for a slight rent reduction to cover costs of doing laundry elsewhere? I was thinking somewhere in the vicinity of $20/week because I have a toddler in cloth diapers and that's laundry nearly every other day, several cycles each load, in addition to the normal stuff. Thanks so much!

I think you are well within your rights ! I am a plumbing professional and I see this often . Its not your fault that the building has faulty plumbing ! If you or your landlord need a second opinion on the condition of the plumbing pipes underground I work at Mr. Rooter plumbing and we give free estimates (ask for Donnie to come out ) ! I hope all goes well from here on out !

Def good to be knowledgable about your rights, and in chicago as a tenant you have many. Unfortunately it doesn't really matter if your landlady can't afford if you withhold rent- if she can't afford repairs for things in the lease she has no business renting out the property.

Renovation: Raising Foundation Further Above Grade?

We are currently planning a remodel of a single family home. One of the items we wanted to fix was to raise the height of the ceiling in the (existing) basement. To do this, we were going to raise the foundation of the house.

An architect is telling us that there is a restriction that at least 51% of the foundation must be below grade. We currently have roughly three feet above and three feet below grade, so raising the foundation would violate this restriction.

Two questions:

1. Can someone point me to the building code that describes this restriction?
2. Is this something that can be handled with a variance?

Thanks for any help.

F.A.R. Floor area ratio for your lot depends on zoning. You can try to get your zoning changed, depending on your alderman and neighbors it may be possible, or impossible.

We had a low ceiling in the basement of our single family home. It was less than 50% below grade and our FAR was was exceeded if you included the basement sq footage. We build an addition and to stay under the FAR we lowered the basement floor 11 inches. 90% of the basement is dry, when the water table is high and it rains hard I get some small leaks.

Does anyone who has done this want to share who they used to do the underpinning?

    Thanks
