'Safari' computer trouble in the last week?

Suddenly I'm getting 'plug-in blocked' and even though I down-load what they tell me, it continues. I went 'on the web' and it said that Safari has been having this problem. Can you help me solve it, please?

  • hellopatrick So Great To See You! owner

If it is referencing a plug-in issue then you will either need to update Flash or Java. Definitely do as Charlie references above, but you might also need the Java update if the problem continues.

    https://www.java.com/en/

Unfortunately sometimes even installing the latest plug-ins won't resolve an issue. I've updated Flash and Java before and the latest version (at that time) was very buggy. In that instance I had to un-install and downgrade to an older version that was still stable and working.

I am a local artist, and I have an upcoming installation that involves shoes. I am hoping to collect around 100 pair for this project, but shoes can be very pricey!

I'm reaching out to see if there are any neighbors that happen to have shoes that you may not want anymore. Maybe you are purging - tossing or donating, or maybe you just want to help an artist out.

If so:
Please message me! I'm looking for more classic styles - no sneakers or modern sandals. So this could be heels, pumps, oxfords, boots (depending on what kind), flats, etc. I only have a month before the installation, so I'll probably take anything!

I live in the area, and would be happy to meet in a neutral place or make a pick up!

Thanks!!!

Are men's shoes ok or are you only looking for women's?

  • Wondering what you are planning to do with the shoes once the exhibit is over. Will you donate them on or throw them away or do something else?

I went by early this morning and managed to easily lure some of them down to the sidewalk (I got one lovely, young, short-haired tuxedo female I named Monopoly and a tiny, male Snowshoe Siamese kitten I named Kimchee, both went to Tree House today for tests, exams and spay/neuter). I simply do not have foster homes or adoption floor spots for all these cats. I have a foster (but no adopters) for all the little kittens, but if anyone can help foster some of these young, healthy adults/older kittens until I can get them adopted or into other foster, please do let me know (I would have them vetted before they came into your house). They've got bad food and no shelter, and one seemed pretty underweight to me....they ate the food I brought like crazed zombies - they're obviously not being fed properly. THANK YOU Erica@treehouseanimals.org

Erica, do you have any suggestions how to ask a neighbor about fixing the stray cat that he feeds? He wants the cat around to catch rats which she is good at doing. But she had kittens earlier this year, and I'm afraid she'll have more. I brought it up to him but there's a language barrier and he didn't understand me. He is Ukrainian but knows some English.

Local Plumber?

Hi there...seems like EveryBlock is a good place for recommendations, so here is my second request of the day: I need a plumber...any recs?

  • Diversey plumbing is who we use. They show up on time and do good work.

  • Today, make a stop in to see "The Faucet Guy" on Fullerton Avenue. Describe your problem. The man who owns the place will be able to recommend the ideal plumber who lives/works in the neighborhood because many of them buy from there.

HVAC Recomendations?

Elo Folks! Got a bit of a heating problem and it's now a bit beyond us. We've replaced the coupling, and the furnace stays on for...maybe five to ten minutes, then shuts down. Pilot light out! Can anyone recommend a local person/business who's reliable and fair? A guess is a valve is shot, but I'm not going to chance making it worse. Any suggestions very much appreciated. Thanks!

  • Seth Logan Square resident for 13+ years

Are you having to relight the pilot light each time that the furnace stops working? If so, it's most likely that the thermocouple needs replacing. This should be an easy repair. Feel free to message me if I can help you troubleshoot.

  • LEH Est. in Chicago 1973

Thanks for all your suggestions folks! Nice! Very neighborly and so appreciated! I went with Manny via "Poppyboy's" suggestion. As I said, we changed the coupling, but it turned out to be a Gas Valve and a pile up of Soot. We're AOK now! Safe and Sound...a bit of a dent in the paycheck, but so worth it. I can now recommend Manny and Sub City Heating and Cooling! They were in and out in under an hour.

I know a lot of Logan Square folks (Logan Squarians? Squarites?) ride to work downtown, so I'd like to offer up a reminder that a) not only can you get yourselves killed by pushing the limits of traffic laws, but b) an entire busload of people may get thrown several feet forward due to reckless bicyclist actions, causing injury to others. Please be considerate and CAREFUL if you're riding on busy streets during rush hour!

  • Asking someone to "be Careful" isn't admonishing them. It is a comment meant to show that you care. Just like your mommy did when she told you to be careful.

Milwaukee Ave. I hope you can come and please tell neighbors who live close to this project about the meeting.

Curious to hear what others think about TOD development. I believe it's by the same team that put up the silver TOD building at Division and Ashland.

I thought TOD usually came with less parking than 70 spots. The one at Division and Ashland has zero parking spots.

I think it's interesting that the city is going back to the way they used to build near major intersections and transit hubs such as this. Like the coyote building at Damen and Milwaukee. Or the hairpin arts building. Smaller units, taller, more dense.

I think it's a good idea, as Logan Square has become less and less populated over the years. I seem to recall reading we have a fraction of the population we once had.

I think it would help make the area more vibrant. I've lived in 100+ unit buildings in the past, and people have the misconception that all 100 people will be causing traffic, or waiting in line at the El all at the same time. But even with 100 or 200 units, the fraction that are doing any one thing at the same time are slim to none.

Should be a lively conversation. People get all up in arms about change and the threat of shadows or traffic.

I say bring a tiny bit of our neighborhood's density back! Come join the fun conversation. For those unfamiliar, this development is slated for the now empty lot across from Cozy Corner diner.

Carter, when one types a quick message on an Internet chat forum, it’s sometimes hard to telegraph the emotion behind it. You seemed to fixate on a phrase I used in a post, where I said to Andrew from Logan Square Preservation, “since your group is taking an interest in “our” area, have you watched other development in the area? (In particular, referring to California Avenue, south of Armitage). When making this statement, calling it “our” area I didn’t mean to communicate that I was taking claim of any geographic location, excluding others from “making the cut.” I was, in fact, just curious how far south and east LSP traveled with their zoning work. California, in this stretch, is seeing a proliferation of massive concrete block apartment buildings, much larger in scale than their neighboring graystones. I was only asking, for myself, and others that live in “our” area if LSP operated this far from “their” home base. I haven’t heard anyone objecting to development in this area, and was just genuinely curious if they ventured over this way. Again, hard to convey all that in a few words. In terms of giving my neighbors credit, again, I wouldn’t have asked for the opinion of my valued neighbors if I wasn’t truly interested. I’m sorry that my text over the Internet was interpreted as diminishing anyone’s opinion. That was most equivocally not my intent. My opinions may indeed be a hybrid of wishful thinking and reality. Can’t opinions be just that? They’re opinions, not dictates. Again, I didn’t mean to hurt anyone’s feelings or claim I had some ownership of any segment of the neighborhood or any supreme thinking on any subject related to this topic. Again, I like to blabber…and apologize if any of it came off the way you’re interpreting it. I certainly think we can all learn a lot from each other as fellow long-term neighbors…and I look forward to shaping “our” neighborhood together.

Building housing does not cerate economy, except for temporary construction jobs. Think about it-
When the 49ers ran to the west coast, they did not go because somebody had built housing, they went to pan for gold(self employed) and for jobs catering to the gold industry, and then housing was created.

When children of farmers left the rural area and migrated to the big cities during the industrial revolution, they came for jobs, not houses.

jobs first, housing second. That's how it works.

While there is room for more people( because of the loss of population in Logan and Chicago in general), ask yourselves why there is lower population? It isn't a lack of housing. Every street I drive down has empty houses and/or apts on in. And don't say it's because we need affordable housing, because the rents in this place will be similar to the place on Division - ie $2500/month.

This is about some connected developer reaping millions. Not about transportation, not about community, not about affordable housing.

Just put out an RFP (request fro proposal) to all developers asking them to bid on building a 4 story building on that site that looks like the quaint neighborhood it always was, and you will get 100's of responses. Because a developer can make a profit on building on this site no matter what the size. To say it needs to be 10-15 stories for economic reasons is false.

Looking for local shops that do vintage consignment/sale

Hello neighbors, can anyone recommend a local shop that may be interested in buying some 1960s memorabilia? Beatles and Monkees board games and teen fan magazines. I'd be happy to just get the stuff sold, but I'd take consignment as well. I've been trying to sell stuff on Craig's List and it's tough to find buyers. eBay is another option but it's again difficult to find local buyers and I'd rather not get into the complexities and time of shipping. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!!

    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-10-29/while-you-were-getting-worked-up-over-oil-prices-this-just-happened-to-solar.html

"After years of struggling against cheap natural gas prices and variable subsidies, solar electricity is on track to be as cheap or cheaper than average electricity-bill prices in 47 U.S. states -- in 2016, according to a Deutsche Bank report published this week. That’s assuming the U.S. maintains its 30 percent tax credit on system costs, which is set to expire that same year.

Even if the tax credit drops to 10 percent, solar will soon reach price parity with conventional electricity in well over half the nation: 36 states. Gone are the days when solar panels were an exotic plaything of Earth-loving rich people. Solar is becoming mainstream, and prices will continue to drop as the technology improves and financing becomes more affordable, according to the report."

Why do bicyclists ride on the sidewalk when they don't have to?

I totally get why cyclists go on the sidewalks sometimes. I did not understand why a young guy had to speed run down Armitage on the sidewalk last night, almost plowing down my 10 pound dog. I also didn't get why the woman was riding on the sidewalk on Humboldt last night when there is the side street to the main street she could have been riding on. I also saw a guy riding on the sidewalk on Palmer, another quiet street.

Since there are so many drivers are so evil threads, I thought I would start a thread on bikers because I saw three last night on the sidewalk for no reason.

  • Susan S. resident

@Tom in Logan SQ The law is anyone over the age of 11 must ride in the street.

  • Y_2_K I aspire to be who I am.

^^^ Yeah but it's not enforced, at all.

While I'm a huge fan of name-calling on this particular topic, better infrastructure does reduce it. However, I tend to see the most offenders away from large artery streets that would (probably) be next in line to get a bike lane. Meaning, more bike lanes aren't going to solve the issue. People who do this have by doing so demonstrated they don't deserve the carrot, get the stick and use it.

    Cops. Tickets. Public humiliation.

Ring lost in Palmer Square

My wife was with our daughter in Palmer Square yesterday afternoon and in the process of packing up lost her engagement ring. We've had a guy come out with a metal detector to search the area to no avail. If you by chance come across a ring in the area, please let me know. We're more than happy to offer a reward.

  • Thanks everyone. She was sitting under a dead tree on the N/NW side of the park. We had someone run that area with a metal detector yesterday. The tricky part is she also ran a couple of laps around the track and then headed back to our home, north on Kedzie. So this thing really could be anywhere.

Montreal receives over 80 inches of snow a year to Chicago's 38, my friends that live there were in shock that we in Chicago would put out furniture to save a spot for parking after digging out. They would ask--is it not a public street? Well--yes? Well we Chicagoans know it's complicated. I asked them how the city of Montreal handled it and it was so simple. What the city does when it starts to snow, they execute plowing schedules set up very similar to our street cleaning and snow removal on main arteries here in Chicago. Residents are required to move their cars off one side of the street to allow plows to remove snow up to the curbs in the am and by the the morning the other side would be removed.

I think it's brilliant--any thoughts?

I'm paying for private parking this year to avoid the constant aggravation and potential nasty encounters. This is going to be a tough habit for some selfish Chicagoans to break.

Yes, I am also not looking forward to this winter, especially since we already have parking problems here in Chicago. My blood pressure is already rising just thinking about it. That would be a great idea with the moving to one side for the plows to come in. We definitely would have to wait awhile. All streets should be one way and have the cars parked at a one way angle giving more room to park This would never work either since the city works backwards instead of forwards. Yikes, soo many cars.

Now that Fullerton has been repaved east of Western Ave. I would like to ask the opinion of neighbors that live near there, if we can take the opportunity to reconfigure the lanes to slow down traffic in that stretch by adding protected bike lanes near the curb and have parking pushed out near the center of the street, (similar to Milwaukee Ave south of Chicago Ave). Also add the center stop signs at crosswalks to make it easier to cross. I have always found that it hard to cross the street at some points where there are crosswalks and most drivers just ignore the signage. Also in my observations it just seems to be a drag strip from California to Western. I have read studies that if the lanes are tighter, drivers in response will slow down. I envision that part of Fullerton to be like Division between Ashland and Leavitt. With it's oversize sidewalks it could be the new "it" area for outdoor cafes and such. Thoughts?

I would absolutely be supportive of the city re-engineering this strip to be more safe for those crossing (on foot, bike, or in a car), whether that solution includes bike lanes or not.

In its current configuration, this strip does seem to visually cue drivers to move along and not expect much cross traffic. As others have noted, there are many options (and ones more effective than signs) for modifying the physical components of this strip that would elicit more cautious east-west traffic and safer north-south traffic.

  • Just want to say that there are folks at Goethe working with I believe Active Trans (but I could be wrong) about making the areas around Haas and Goethe safer for pedestrians/cyclists.

Voting Guide/ Candidate Resource - Judges

Hi All,

For those who have not voted yet, I just wanted to share a resource I found helpful in making my decisions for all the Judicial selections on the ballot. In addition to the Gubernatorial, and Congressional candidates, most of the ballot is comprised of candidates for judges in various courts -- none of whom I knew anything about.

Various Bar Associations gave their recommendations on all of the candidates, compiled in the pdf link below:

http://www.voteforjudges.org/wp-content/uploads/2014-Alliance-General-Election-Ratings-Retention-in-Ballot-Order-Final.pdf

Also helpful is the general list of candidates:

Hope it helps!

Building at Rockwell/Cortland

Does anyone know what's going on with the closed down residential building on the north west corner of Rockwell and Cortland? When the gates went up I was hoping they were going to tear it down, but it looks like they're restoring it now.

  • They were pouring cement this morning. There is a new sign in the front window as well but I didn't catch what it says. Possibly a Realtor sign.

GRIDLOCK at California and Milwuakee (Friday)

It seems like maybe this could have been better executed- the traffic was stopped for 4 cycles so two sections of California either side of Milwaukee could be ground up for reasons unknown. This was taking place at 4PM, traffic was gridlocked on a Friday afternoon in all directions.

Two CTA busses one going North and the other South were stuck in traffic and the drivers stopped to chat, their mirrors were tangled, they were too close too each other, it was a comedy of errors, and poor traffic direction from the contractor. Chicago Police, nowhere despite being just blocks from the 14th District...they sure could have used better traffic control.

So now the road is ground up and there is no work being done, couldn't this have waited till Monday and then do whatever needs to be done?

  • Same thing happened on Saturday Oct 18th at noon at the intersection of Logan and Elston. That is ground zero for Saturday errands and chores (Target, Home Depot, Strack n Van Till, X Sport, Pep Boys etc). What a nightmare!!!!!
And they came back on sat oct 25 to work again. Not in the middle of the day in the middle of the week. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, that'd actually make sense.

This city is run by morons. Aldermanic elections in February. VOTE AGAINST THE INCUMBANT, no matter where you live.

It seems to me that once you have a crew and equipment working on the road you'd want them to pave as much as possible in as little time as possible.

I'm not a member of the Rahm fan club but I won't vote against anyone for fixing the streets. I would love to talk to him about how he measures Charter Schools to be more effective than Public Schools staffed with union teachers.

Moving to Chicago!

I posted something similar to this before, but I was wondering about driving time (and received answers mostly relating to commute time via public transportation.)

So, what would the driving time in rush hour to UChicago be from Logan Square, Lincoln Park, and Lakeview? Thanks!

I commute to the law school from Logan Square and it takes me 35-40 min in the morning to get there around 7:50. It takes me about 10 minutes to get on the expressway (especially if I leave after 7:20), so you can shave some time off by living closer to 90/94. I always take LSD, I end up regretting it otherwise 90% of the time, and the view is absolutely beautiful. It's a great way to start the day. I leave around 3:30/4 to beat rush hour and it takes around the same time.

I would say that if you don't have a parking spot, you should get there at the latest by 7:45. Spots fill up very fast.

I have some friends who live in the south loop and take the bus, which takes them about half an hour, so it's not that much of a difference. Obviously if you're driving, it's under 15 min.

I went to UChicago for undergrad too, and the only way I told myself I'd go back is if I didn't live in Hyde Park, it really sucks. The commute has not really been an issue.

  • I used to commute to the University of Chicago Medical Center from North Ave and Ashland. I started work at 8 a.m. and my commute there via 90/94 was about 30 minutes including the time needed to find on-street parking in Hyde Park. Driving home I would take Lake Shore Drive to 55 to 90/94. I would leave work at approximately 4 p.m. and be home within 45 minutes most days.
