Helicopter spinning around Belmont and Springfield

Does anyone living by Springfield and Belmont hear the police helicopter going around in circles - anyone know why?

  • I saw fire trucks and an ambulance in that area, but no police cars not sure what was going on.

As a longtime resident I wasn't overly thrilled a bar was replacing provenance. We need locally sourced retail in our neighborhood, as this helps grow the core of what we are all about. I have shopped and supported provenance for over 6 years and was very upset they were leaving their space. I attended a community meeting a few weeks back and was completely surprised by what I heard. Most importantly, these were 3 local residents I.e. small business owners. They planned to keep a retail component w/ their business model, adding produce also & plans to expand to a full on wine/packaged goods & retail component in the building. This wasn't just a bar as what I read on here and provenances FB page. I was very disappointed to find out though that provenance, who started this campaign to stay in the spot via reaching out to the alderman, is now playing dirty pool.

The owners of provenance have quietly spread the word they may be staying. It appears they are threatening to remain in the space unless they are compensated by the building owner in an effort to block the new owners from buying the building. Was this the advice of the alderman interactions? To play the role of poor me then threaten to squat to block a sell of the building? Did the building owner or new owner do something illegal here by giving them 60 days notice to vacate after not agreeing to extend their lease per Provenances FB page? If this is true, Shame on you Provenance for rallying support of our neighborhood, then trying to extort payment because apparently it's only your right to do business in the space.

Signed,
a very disappointed FORMER customer.

suspicious guy going door to door

Just had a guy (about 20 years old) come to my door. Said he wanted to buy a house on our street (3000 block of Gresham) and asked if we were selling. Had a camera and notebook and was going door to door. Seemed weird because I don't know many 20 year olds buying houses, plus there's already 3 homes for sale on our block and that didn't seem like a legit way to find a property to buy. Not sure if I'm overreacting but only wanted to put it out there for anyone else to be on the look out just in case.

  • llitman I'm a happy resident and have been here for years.

Last month another person on everyblock mentioned something similar and people commented. It sounds like he was gathering information and scoping your property out to rob you. I'd bring this up with your neighbors if you can. There have been a lot of "house-flippers" in a lot of neighborhoods that are really gathering information to learn when is the best time to break into people's houses.

Studios and One Bedrooms in Logan?

I am looking to move to a new apartment sometime in October, and I know it is a long shot to find an affordable studio or one bedroom in Chicago, let alone in Logan Square, but if anyone has any leads (management companies, units, specific apartments) that would be so lovely!

I really want to stay in this neighborhood, but miss living in a tiny little studio.

  • It is actually very realistic. Get you most comfortable walking shoes and stroll the neighborhood there are many independent owners who want reliable tenants and truth to be told don't care about the rate they could get versus the reliable the will have.

    @Tracy -

    1) I have no context into your situation so I'm not making any judgements. It's also your right to decry the CACC (which, by the way, isn't a "business" - it's a government entity).

    2) Rescues, including PAWS, do not just blindly take in animals and tell the individual(s) releasing those animals that they are taking them. PAWS, like the CACC, is very transparent, and will tell you immediately where the animal will be placed. Sometimes that's with them, but often times, you are correct - they often go to the CACC (PAWS is usually close to full at all times, as that's the entire point of their organization). However there is no conspiracy to "hide" this - it is in fact spelled out clearly when releasing an animal to them.

    3) There is no issue with you stating what is already transparent information, but you clearly have an ax to grind with the CACC. You may consider the CACC "nasty", but editorializing an organization that's both needed in the city (by the population as well as animal rescues) and actively working towards animal welfare is doing no one any favors with your narrow viewpoint. You may have had an unfortunate situation with the CACC, but it's also unfair to paint the org as universally reviled because of it (hence my comments).

    4) I'm not going to have a discussion on CACC politics and operations and further derail this thread.

If that dog's owners cannot be found (and as @rogerparker says, owners are told to check the CACC first and foremost) and she ends up at the CACC, I can guarantee you that as long as she's not horribly reactive to anyone who approaches her that dog will stay there MAYBE a month (more like two weeks at most). Dogs like that have no problem finding homes and are snapped up instantly at the CACC.

  • Hopefully this little one finds her home! If not if you need someone to take her in or if she will be able to foster/adopt please let me know. I am looking for a beagle and a female at that. I have had no luck so far but I have...

Found: Orange cat, long tail, very sweet

Hey folks. We found an incredibly sweet, very skinny orange tabby cat (possibly an adolescent) with a strangely long tail in the alley between monticello and central park by belmont. It has a collar but no address or tag and is a bit beat up and hungry. This cat is clearly an indoor cat that got out. We lured it into our backyard and gave it food... if it's still around on a business day we will call the Treehouse. If anyone knows this cat, please drop a line.

The picture we took is apparently too large for the page, but we do have a couple of pictures, if you want them.

  • If you take the cat to a vet, they can check to see if it has a chip which will identify it and its owner.

  • I've sent the images on to your email, Hilary! I will look for the little guy each night and try to capture it if it turns out to be yours. I hope so.

Chihuahua Running Loose in Logan

There's a skiddish chihuahua with no collar or tags running amuck around Kedzie Ave and McLean. I saw him almost run into Kedzie traffic. I, along with some neighbors tried to lure him/her toward us, with no luck. Every time we get close, she/he barks and runs away to hide. This is right near Armitage, and I'm so concerned that he's going to get hit by a car.

Each time I call, I talk to a receptionist and then I am transferred to a voice mail where I leave a message and never get a return call. The last time I called I told the receptionist that I had left several messages, so she said she would give the right person my contact information, and I still never heard back. I was calling about simple things such as: recycling for our block and what can be done about all the solicitation material that is left on our front steps and gates. I even called to try and make an appointment with the Alderman to discuss items in person since I work until 5:30 and cannot make it to his Monday community meetings by 6pm, but did not get a call back. His website says “An operator will take your contact information and record your issues and concerns. Then you will be referred to the proper staff or receive a call back.” But this is not true. Has anyone had any luck with Alderman Maldonado’s office?

I have used Creative Glass and Mirror for an all custom tile base frameless shower stall, and they installed including readjustment by taking it back and grinding to fit the sloping floor etc.but they were not cheap (close to $2000). In a more standard installation, I have used the Dreamline frameless shower door that is available online at Faucet Direct for about $600 (door+12" wide stationary glass for an alcove, so no sides), and they have glass available at increments of one inch, with further adjustments made at the wall end with an adjustable aluminum extrusion, so it may be possible to find one that fits. Also, when one of the tempered glass pieces imploded while installing it, they said no problem and sent me a replacement, with no charge. I hope this helps.

  • Last November, I closed on a beautiful home here in Logan Square. In the master bath there is a fancy custom tile shower with 5 sprayers. The only thing it was missing was a nice glass door. My wife wanted it to be a steam shower sans a real steamer.

Based on a recommendation from EB, we used Ashland Glass and the door is beautiful. Half inch thick glass (very sturdy), and done beautifully. I'll be using them again for some of my next projects. Big fan!

The house is not abandoned and it is not a story of little old grandma. I see twenty-somethings coming in and out of there all the time.

I know some neighbors have already explained the problem to them to no avail they just let it grow au naturale.

Anybody have experience getting able bodied neighbors to do the right (and lawful) thing?

New Condos in 3500 Block of Elston?

I am looking to buy a condo in Avondale area. These condo buildings (3501 to 3509) on the north side of Elston Ave look great. Only two buildings seem to be occupied. The other three are under construction right now. Do anyone have any ideas of when the new ones will be put for sale? Being right next to Elston ave, will it be a little bit noisy? I am new to the city, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  • ht ...

Not too bad of noise. Keep in mind, ñ is across the street. They get a late night crowd on Tue, Wed, Fri Sat. That maybe fine now, but for resale it maybe a bit of a pain.

Are you working with a RE agent? I am a lifelong Chicagoan, and was born down the street on Artesian and Shubert. Also, as a real estate agent, I'd love to sit down and have coffee to give you a bit more insight of my firsthand knowledge. I will PM you.

  • Hi Zhisc. There is currently 1 unit available in the 3503 N Elston building. It is a 3 bed 2 bath listed for $260,000. Please give me a call if you would like to take a look at it. 773.370.6781 HT - you are thinking about the building at Elston and Rockwell. The buildings they are talking about is by Cheif O'Neils.

  • Laura Neighbor

I just moved in very close to that, and don't see the noise as an issue. The fire department is right there, but they're pretty courteous and don't seem to put the sirens on unless totally necessary. I really like it over here.

Provenance Food and Wine to close Sep 27 & what you can do about it

In a nutshell, new landlords didn't renew their lease and they will have to vacate by September 27.

http://chicagoist.com/2014/08/07/provenance_food_wines_logan_square.php

Apparently, Alderman Moreno wants to help, so calling all neighbors to call/write the Alderman to help Provenance stay at its current location through the holiday season. This is the only way the owners will at least be in a position to consider keeping the store in the neighborhood, given the financial burden of moving. The alderman's chief of staff's e-mail is Raymond.Valadez@cityofchicago.org.

Kedzie construction crews ringing doorbells before 7AM

So now that the water main is done, Kedzie is getting repaved! This is awesome and I appreciate the city doing this job right.

But.... is it really necessary to drive up and down the street at 6 or 7am honking horns and then going door do door ringing doorbells to find who forgot to the one or two remaining cars on the block?

While I realize the person who is parked there may appreciate it, most of the doorbells...

While I realize the person who is parked there may appreciate it, most of the doorbells you ring will not be that person. Perhaps they sleep later than 6:50? Or perhaps they (like me) have a sleeping todder who will will be cranky all day when woken over an hour early?

IMO they should just tow the cars. The signs are posted and the construction is obvious.

  • Hayek Not FDIC Insured | May lose value

I pretty sure they will, based on the 30 day restricted parking. It needs it!

  • Hayek Not FDIC Insured | May lose value

So I guess I was wrong on that. No sign of them repaving the southbound side of Kedzie. And no sign of them filling that 20x20 area they seem to have forgotten about near Cortland, either. Thank goodness I sold the low-rider.

ComEd fridge recycling program

Hi. Has anyone used the ComEd pickup/recycleing program? Did they pickup when they said they were going to? Did you have to wait around all day? They must've had quite a response because they used to pay $50 not $35.

https://www.comed.com/home-savings/rebates-incentives/Pages/refrigerator-recycling.aspx

  • It's because it is a energy savings program. They are supposed to recycle old energy inefficient frigs that are working, to get them out of use. Lots of people look for these to put in a basement or garage as a second frig not knowing that they use so much electricity that they are actually paying more to have these frigs. The pay back on a new frig can be 5 years or sometimes less. This is the only appliance in your house that is on 24/7/365.

  • Thank you John! That makes sense!

Yard waste, weed removal service?

Do any of you know of a service in Logan Square you would recommend for removing some weeds, yard waste and old landscaping materials? Do any of you know of a service in Logan Square you would recommend for removing some weeds, yard waste and old landscaping materials? We bought a house last summer, and there is an area in the back yard near the alley gate where the previous owners stacked some old stone pavers and piles of pulled weeds and yard waste. The area is now also overgrown with live weeds. I'm looking for someone to come and pull the weeds and remove and haul away the old yard waste and stones, and clean the area out. Why haven't I done this myself, you ask? Because a few rats and copious spiders are currently lodging in there, and I'm a scaredy-cat (no offense to cats) and I just can't. Any suggestions?

Oh, also taking recommendations for a tree removal service (it's a medium sized mostly-dead old apple tree). Thanks!

Where do you browse?

Hello Neighbors,

I'm going to be renting out an apartment soon, and before you all pile on, no this is not an ad.

I'm curious where everyone searches for apartments these days. Craig's list all the way? domu? Flyers in the men's room of the Two Way?

Thanks for the input!

Brent makes a good point. You do get perks if you use an agent. If you don't find someone you know then you have a bit of a task on your hand looking for someone. Credit check's, background, references, showings, etc.

The Agent does that for you. Its a time versus money issue. Every once in a while you might get it done with one applicant. Which would be great. But, realistically you will have numerous people apply who can't afford the place, have bad credit, will want to view the place but aren't ready to move.

I call Landlords all the time for my customers and I can sometimes call 6-7 places before someone picks up. So, figure if I am doing that then imagine how many other people are doing that as well.

Don't misunderstand me, you will save money by doing it yourself. you have to decide what is more important the money you save or your time.

Good luck with that. Let me know if you need assistance.

  • Just so you know, a realtor will ask you for the first months rent for their help. I have asked several places and boy that is a lot of money to part with in order for someone to show my place and help me fill out some forms. I actually...

I actually need that first months rent to oh, I don't know, pay my mortgage!! I wish I could get their help, but I cannot afford to give up that money. But I have a lot of friends who did pay someone to help them. Good luck!

Move out and withholding security deposit question

I'm moving out of my current apartment next week and have learned the new tenant is moving in the day after I leave. According to the landlord, their new lease starts the day after I move, which I presume would void my lease and payment obligations owed for the remainder of the month. Can anyone direct me to where in Chicago's Landlord Tenant ordinance it confirms I won't owe rent once the new tenant takes possession? I can't for the life of me find it but want to be armed with the proper info should it come up during security deposit return.

Thanks!

  • People calm down, you don't even know what the landlord is going to do, why don't you talk to the landlord that you have had a "great landlord/tenant relationship" with for 4 years before you get yourself and everyone all riled up.

  • Gee Susan, if you read the thread, you would have seen I did finally talk to the landlord. My initial question was asking for someone to help me find the citation in the RLTO that states he's ending one contract while starting another, and my needing to know the legalities surrounding it.
