Thank you for the links. I was aware of the city fees and taxes. I also recall Emmanuel said he wouldn't rule out a property tax increase to pay down the pension debt. Here's the sad truth: the prior administration spent all the money and borrowed more. It also allowed the pension deficit to grow larger. Emmanuel inherited this mess--he didn't create it. He's trying to get this back under control and if you think that will be done without more tax revenues you're living in a fantasy world. We are going to pay more somehow--maybe higher property taxes or a sales tax on services such as lawyer's and hairdresser's services. Personally I prefer a city income tax to replace property taxes. Then it's a progressive tax rather than a regressive one and based on something real--not just an estimate by an assessor. The first $15,000 earned could be exempt from the tax so we aren't taking tax money from people earning at poverty level. But long story short, if Garcia says he will not raise taxes then I definitely will not vote for him because it means either he has no idea of the magnitude of the problem or he's out and out lying.

Saying Chuy will raise taxes without acknowledging that Rahm has and will continue to do so is disingenuous. The difference comes down to how those taxes are spent, Rahm has shown his fealty to the corporation "people" (H/T Supreme Court!). Rahm has spent taxpayer money defending corporate contracts and has spent taxpayer money trying to dismantle contracts with people who are our neighbors. Etc., etc.

I, for one, do not want a repeat of the past 4 years.

Artsy Pub Crawl?

I'm looking to put together a pub crawl with an art theme, and I'm specifically looking for restaurants/bars that have local art for sale on the walls. We will be starting in Logan Square but will go anywhere in the city from there. I know Dunlays, Rocking Horse, and the Green Eye typically have art for sale, anyone know of some other good stops?

Mayoral Runoff

  • Sighryn Roscoe resident

Ain't nobody care about who Wilson endorses. I just could not take him seriously.

  • Marcelino Gerena New 31st Ward Resident

Hey Sighryn....I just saw Rahm on Chicago Tonight and he seems to care. His 10% forced Rahm into a runoff. That was Wison's goal. Now he can reap the benefits of his $1 mil investment. Follow the money and you will find Rahm.

$100 Rush Hour parking ticket.

Does this restriction start before or after the sign? I took this picture from where I was parked ( on the corner.) You can see the sign about a third block up. I have been parking here for 2 years with no problems but if I am wrong I will park somewhere else. I could google it but every blockers tend to know it all..

  • Pretty obvious that it applies to the whole block and side of the street. You've been lucky that this is the first ticket in 2 years.

  • Sighryn Roscoe resident

If it was obvious I would have parked elsewhere. I thought I was in the clear since the sign was ahead of me. I did not realize the parking ban was for the entire block. Good to know. I'll park right across the street from now on.
I have been lucky. *crossing fingers.

The point is: do you want an autocratic alderman unilaterally making decisions as to which businesses can or cannot open?

Walmart is horrible to employees, but then so is Target and nobody's complaining about that. If he really wants to effect change, he'd pass a city-wide ordinance against anti-gay employment practices, or raising the minimum wage to $15 instead of making people wait until 2019 for a meager $13. That's the way to do it, not ad hoc obstruction of individual businesses. If it's not OK in Ward 1, it's not OK anywhere in the city.

Moreno is all about hype. He finds a cause, hypes it to death, takes credit, and cashes in.

BTW, he helped open the pawn shops nobody wanted (except his donors) so if you'd like to talk about the effect that has on crime, let's go.

  • Loganparkcat...don't say I disagree about blocking the Walmart. Was just pointing that for the person who brought up Walmart. You won't find me in a Walmart or Dollar Stores, both of which seem to line their shelves with poor-produced products from China.

3100 Block of Belden and Lyndale

Hello -
I am interested in connecting with neighbors in this area to become more cooperative. It's been really difficult the last 3 years to drive down the alley, because people don't clean their area and many that do, place all of the snow in the middle of the alley. Would love to form an understanding so our entire alley is clean, like other cooperative blocks. Would also like to connect for more block parties and community-based partnerships.

Car broken into while parked on Palmer Blvd

My car was broken into sometime between today and Wednesday night. No windows were broken so either it was jimmied or the door was unlocked. Everything from all the compartments was turned out onto the floor. Two CD cases of CDs were taken, all my change (about $3.00 in pennies) and car phone charger and ipod adapter. No huge losses. I expect it was someone walking down the street trying door handles. Perhaps the fact that the snow wasn't cleared off my car for a day made it look like I was away? It was parked right in front of my apartment, on Palmer Blvd near Sacramento.

  • Thanks Jeff, I don't think it could be avoided, though now I'll look for a person with a staff!

I think the take away is to not leave things in my car. I remember now I had a plastic bag of trash and recycling on the passenger seat. Even if I know it's not worth anything, I need to make sure my car looks boring to someone who looks in.

  • C. M. D. Avondale Triangle resident

I has someone break three of my windows to get 75 cents and a screwdriver - sometimes they'll break into your car for the barest possibility of a chance there's something worth money there.

What does it say about a mayor who spends millions against a field of candidates who have never run for Mayor and he gets 1000 less votes than his 1st election and almost set a record for lowest turnout ever. Maybe if there was a candidate named Apathetic he/she would have won.

And as long as the ballot is postmarked by Feb 23, any absentee ballots arriving at the Board of Elections by March 10 count as valid votes (over 500 absentee ballots were requested, leaving just over 200 either not in or unmailed) - plus there's 60 provisional ballots that have to be verified and if those check out, those will add to the total. With a race this close, I'm sure each vote is going to be hand counted and scrutinized - regular, absentee, and provisional.

This race is still a long way from over.

Wayne Electric Building - Elston and California

Does anyone know what is going on with the old Wayne Electric Building on Elston and California? They just put up fencing all around the property. Has it been bought out? Are they going to tear it down and build a commercial or residential bldg?

  • They were tearing at least part of it down when I went by on Thursday morning.

  • Jacko Z just livin' in the hood

Pedestrian traffic would help, however the size of the sidewalks and discombobulated intersections make it very hard to develop a restaurant/bar. Also the Elston strip just south of this intersection needs a redevelopment.

Tearing Up Streets by St. Wenceslaus

Starting next week the City has announced that it will be tearing up streets in my area, including the Monticello block by St. Wenceslaus, for water/sewer repairs. They've also posted "no parking" signs that extend into April. There doesn't seem to be any provision of what the many people who pack the block with parked cars each night should do. All the blocks around are zoned for permit parking. Has anyone heard any news about easing of permit parking restrictions or such? Yes, I can call the alderman, but I wanted to tap the community grapevine first. Thanks.

This afternoon I was approached by two men in their late 20s that seemed a bit sketchy in a black dodge minivan that said they wanted to fix a dent that was in my car. I was in my car and they were in theirs. I said no thank you and they persisted to hound me saying they would and could do it right now, on the spot if I just gave them 20 dollars. At this point they were harassing me and seemed mad that I wouldnt pay 20$ to have a dent fixed. They were both very persistent and aggressive in nature. I decided to take a photo of them after they pulled away to give details on the plate to 311. At this point they reversed and rammed their car into mine hard and got out of their car. I honked and made a scene and they got back into the car and drove off. I feel like they were probably trying to rob me or steal my car. I went to the police station and they couldn't do anything since there was minimal damage to my car and I wasn't hurt, physically. The license plate was an expired temporary plate registered to a woman from the suburbs. I just want people to be aware of these guys. They seemed hard up,irrational and violent. It seemed like they had this scam down and it wasn't their first attempt. I'm glad people were around and it didn't escalate into anything worse. It was definitely a scary situation.

  • I understand not chasing the thief but the security guard could have at least assisted the lady -- see if she was hurt, take her inside, help her call the real police -- they should be trained to not just stand there and look puzzled.

As everyone knows- vital services & representation are sorely lacking in the 1st ward.

What is it about the intersection of Kimball and Barry

that makes people think that traffic laws, common sense, and human decency no longer apply?

For the third time this winter a driver almost ran me over while I was crossing in the crosswalk. I don't care if there is snow on the ground and you're driving 5 MPH, I don't care if it's saturday night and you're drunk, if a pedestrian is IN the crosswalk already, you better stop at the stop sign, and stay stopped, until that pedestrian is into the other half of the crosswalk.

Sorry if anyone heard me yelling at the driver tonight and was disturbed. Next time I'm going to use my keys to scratch the hood.

  • A sure fire way to get people to slow down is to strip out a couple of inches of asphalt like they do for resurfacing. Or maybe some well placed potholes. People always slow down for those.

  • I was at Central at the red lite crossing over Milwaukee and a Police car going in the opposite direction stopped his car and told the car in front to move back over the crosswalk for the pedestrians to cross safely. Soo dangerous there where most car drivers always stop over the crosswalk. When I would live there for many years, I would always yell at them. What good was that. Chicago is like Miami and other cities. Rules of the Road, WHAT IS THAT? Welcome to Chicago.
