Car broken into while parked on Palmer Blvd

My car was broken into sometime between today and Wednesday night. No windows were broken so either it was jimmied or the door was unlocked. Everything from all the compartments was turned out onto the floor. Two CD cases of CDs were taken, all my change (about $3.00 in pennies) and car phone charger and ipod adapter. No huge losses. I expect it was someone walking down the street trying door handles. Perhaps the fact that the snow wasn't cleared off my car for a day made it look like I was away? It was parked right in front of my apartment, on Palmer Blvd near Sacramento.

  • Yikes, sorry to hear Karen. Will keep a look out. I'm your next door neighbor, BTW.

  • Hi Cori!

  • Avondaler noisy neighbor

Same thing happened to me in front of my house the one time I left my car door unlocked. Don't know what they were looking for, but they ended up taking nothing from my car. The glove compartment was ransacked....

Coffee at Western and Armitage?

I've noticed that one of the storefronts on Western (right across from Margie's) seems to be some sort of coffee shop? I've seen people in there a few times, but there isn't any signage. Does anyone know what's going on there?

Residential Glass repair

Does anyone have a good recommendation of a local company recently used to repair interior window pane glass? Thanks!

  • M-nuff M-nuff

We have used: All-American Glass Co @ 3309 W Irving Park - 773-262-6777. They replaced a double pane window in which the seal was broken and we had condensation between the glass panes. They offer a 5-yr warranty on the repair.

  • Thanks, was just looking for someone to do this.. :)

  • There are only so many hours in a day, so maybe what we need is a shared mayor system and Rahm can work on getting the jobs here and linking the transportation and Chuy can work with the neighborhoods to resolve their issues.
There you go. Problem solved. :D

And to add to the discussion on the DePaul arena, the convention business is vital to this city's economy. For years I exhibited at McCormick Place in the National Restaurant Show. More than 75,000 people attend the show. Not all are from out of town but many are. That means they spend money at hotels, restaurants, shops etc. About 5 years ago the association was considering moving the show to Orlando. A suvey of exhibitors showed most wanted the show to stay in Chicago. When McCormick Place loosened union rules which allowed smaller exhibitors to move in their own displays and to set them up (a complaint from smaller businesses and something that made them decide against exhibiting at the show) as well as improving service to exhibitors, the association decided to keep the show here. A lot of places are expanding their convention centers to poach shows from traditional convention cities like Chicago and New York. Orlando and Las Vegas are particularly aggressive. So if the DePaul arena brings in more convention business to this city, it's a win for all of us.

Election

What does it say about a mayor who spends millions against a field of candidates who have never run for Mayor and he gets 1000 less votes than his 1st election and almost set a record for lowest turnout ever. Maybe if there was a candidate named Apathetic he/she would have won.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-comparing-emanuels-2011-election-to-2015-20150225-htmlstory.html

  • I believe that a lot of folks might have stayed home thinking a certain outcome was inevitable. That is the reason I would like to think explains the low turn out. I'm hoping people understand how important the Run Off is and get engaged in the process.

There are also between 19-21 wards that will have an aldermanic run off so the face of the City Council has the potential to drastically shift. Personally, I find that prospect exciting.

  • Loulu Me

It says a lot about him and a lot about the public. The amount of money he has, and has spent, is both obnoxious and offensive. I find the money from Hollywood particularly troublesome. I think those who don't live here should stay out of it. We are the ones to live with the results.

Artsy Pub Crawl?

I'm looking to put together a pub crawl with an art theme, and I'm specifically looking for restaurants/bars that have local art for sale on the walls. We will be starting in Logan Square but will go anywhere in the city from there. I know Dunlays, Rocking Horse, and the Green Eye typically have art for sale, anyone know of some other good stops?

Tearing Up Streets by St. Wenceslaus

Starting next week the City has announced that it will be tearing up streets in my area, including the Monticello block by St. Wenceslaus, for water/sewer repairs. They've also posted "no parking" signs that extend into April. There doesn't seem to be any provision of what the many people who pack the block with parked cars each night should do. All the blocks around are zoned for permit parking. Has anyone heard any news about easing of permit parking restrictions or such? Yes, I can call the alderman, but I wanted to tap the community grapevine first. Thanks.

This afternoon I was approached by two men in their late 20s that seemed a bit sketchy in a black dodge minivan that said they wanted to fix a dent that was in my car. I was in my car and they were in theirs. I said no thank you and they persisted to hound me saying they would and could do it right now, on the spot if I just gave them 20 dollars. At this point they were harassing me and seemed mad that I wouldnt pay 20$ to have a dent fixed. They were both very persistent and aggressive in nature. I decided to take a photo of them after they pulled away to give details on the plate to 311. At this point they reversed and rammed their car into mine hard and got out of their car. I honked and made a scene and they got back into the car and drove off. I feel like they were probably trying to rob me or steal my car. I went to the police station and they couldn't do anything since there was minimal damage to my car and I wasn't hurt, physically. The license plate was an expired temporary plate registered to a woman from the suburbs. I just want people to be aware of these guys. They seemed hard up,irrational and violent. It seemed like they had this scam down and it wasn't their first attempt. I'm glad people were around and it didn't escalate into anything worse. It was definitely a scary situation.

  • I understand not chasing the thief but the security guard could have at least assisted the lady -- see if she was hurt, take her inside, help her call the real police -- they should be trained to not just stand there and look puzzled.

The beat meeting for 1411/1412, which had been postponed due to snow, has been rescheduled for Thursday, Feb. 26, at 7pm. Beat meetings are held at St. Nicolai Church, 3000 N. Kedzie Ave.

In addition to the usual information about crime statistics, police alerts, significant arrests and neighborhood occurrences, this meeting will also feature a information on bicycle theft prevention.
With Spring approaching (allegedly), people will be using their bikes more often. With more bikes out, the number of bicycle thefts increases in spring/summer. Get some tips from CPD members who are also cyclists on protecting your bike from theft.

After reading a previous post that she lives in the 1st ward AND worked for that Alderman recently- I finally determined that she screwed up her paperwork and meant to file to run in the 1st ward !

As everyone knows- vital services & representation are sorely lacking in the 1st ward.
I welcome her efforts to replace Joe Moreno and finally clean up the garbage and filth around her community.

Looking for ESL Teachers!

The Urban Vineyard ESL program is looking for some volunteer teachers! Do you have experience teaching English as a Second Language--or would you like some? We offer a free ESL program and our intention is to not only provide a knowledge of English, but to increase the competence, confidence and capabilities of our students through community and care.

Classes are Tuesdays 6-8pm and Saturdays 10am-noon.

If you or anyone you know would like to help, contact esluv@urbanvineyard.org.

And if you know of anyone who would like to learn, or increase their knowledge of English as a second language, let them know!

What is it about the intersection of Kimball and Barry

that makes people think that traffic laws, common sense, and human decency no longer apply?

For the third time this winter a driver almost ran me over while I was crossing in the crosswalk. I don't care if there is snow on the ground and you're driving 5 MPH, I don't care if it's saturday night and you're drunk, if a pedestrian is IN the crosswalk already, you better stop at the stop sign, and stay stopped, until that pedestrian is into the other half of the crosswalk.

Sorry if anyone heard me yelling at the driver tonight and was disturbed. Next time I'm going to use my keys to scratch the hood.

  • A sure fire way to get people to slow down is to strip out a couple of inches of asphalt like they do for resurfacing. Or maybe some well placed potholes. People always slow down for those.

  • I was at Central at the red lite crossing over Milwaukee and a Police car going in the opposite direction stopped his car and told the car in front to move back over the crosswalk for the pedestrians to cross safely. Soo dangerous there where most car drivers always stop over the crosswalk. When I would live there for many years, I would always yell at them. What good was that. Chicago is like Miami and other cities. Rules of the Road, WHAT IS THAT? Welcome to Chicago.

Given what I know of the candidates, I would expect a close race, but Ward 35 is not on any "races to watch" stories in the news, so maybe it's not as close as I would think. I'll be the first to admit I haven't researched or prepared for this election as well as I should and normally do. I know that's not very civic-minded, but it is what it is. Development around Kedzie/Armitage?

Does anyone know what's happening in the building across from Scofflaw (MuveMusic building) on the NW corner of Kedzie and Armitage? My boyfriend received a hint from someone at Scofflaw that "something good" was coming, but no more details were offered. I also wondered if anyone had heard any plans about anything coming into the other vacant buildings on the north side of Armitage in that general area (for example, there are a few vacant storefronts between the cleaners and Walgreens, east of Kedzie)?

What do YOU pay for Comcast???

I've had it with Comcast, just like so many others... In less than a year, my internet fee went from $77 (which I thought was absurdly high!), to $83, to $95 this month!!! My co-worker told me yesterday she pays $30, and every time that "promotional" rate expires, she complains and they give it back to her... So, I'm thinking that's some pretty significant range! So, what do YOU pay??? I'm wonder just how wide this range is...
