This may sound weird, but having just moved here I need to know what are the dankest tortilla chips to be had here in Chicago. Coming from out west, the best we have are called Juanita's, made in Hood River, Oregon. Tell me the best brands.

#73 bus schedule

Does anyone know the best way to advocate for an extension of the #73 Armitage bus schedule? Right now it stops before 7:30 on weekends, which no longer matches community need, especially once the trail opens. I'd appreciate any guidance. Thanks!

  • Maybe check with your alderman? In our ward, the 47th, Ameya Pawar has been trying to get the 11 Lincoln's route extended like it used to be, due to community comments. I guess you would also need to get community to voice support and outcry to show a need for it.

  • Unfortunately, the CTA does not listen to passengers. This was evident a couple of years ago when they discontinued the Lincoln Ave bus despite massive opposition from the community. They also refuse to put buses on Clybourn or Elston, despite the number of new businesses and shopping on these streets.

  • Thanks for bringing that up. I would contact the alderman first. Moreno might be your best bet. Especially as we add larger scale transit oriented developments near Armitage in the years to come, an expanded schedule would make a lot of sense.

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

Interesting, as it $15/hour hasn't been implemented.

"Under the plan, large employers have until 2017 to raise wages to $15 an hour, while businesses with fewer than 500 employees have until 2021"

    http://money.cnn.com/2015/03/18/news/economy/seattle-minimum-wage/

To truly evaluate $15/hour, it needs to be looked at on a macro level: decreases in Medicaid and food stamps, the effect of more "buying power" for those at the lowest levels, etc.

  • This is not exactly an unbiased report, from an unbiased source, but it will be interesting to see the long and short and any unintended consequences.

Where to sell used mattresses?

My middle-aged mother is moving to a smaller apartment this weekend and no longer wants, needs, or has space for her queen sized mattress and bed frame. I don't really want to go the craigslist route because waiting for a legit buyer (as opposed to a cashiers check scammer) and then trying to coordinate pick up is more of a hassle than I'm willing to deal with this weekend. I know there are used mattress stores but…? can't seem to find much info on getting rid of them, only buying them. It's a decent quality mattress, about 14 years old, cats and dogs in home. Suggestions?

Two Towers/Max Gerber Development 2nd Community Meeting

The 2nd Community Meeting for the old Max Gerber Project (The Two Towers), at 2293 N. Milwaukee Ave, will be Monday, March 30th, at the Haas Park Fieldhouse at 6:30 p.m .

The last meeting was packed and was originally proposed to add 253 rental units in the area near the California L station - that's on top of 52 now permitted at 2340 N. California and 120 planned to open in Spring 2016 at 2211 N. Milwaukee.

  • Susan S. resident

@Buster, So you heard all the experts in the audience who also spoke at the last meeting (urban planners, long-time residents), many opposed to the proposal? I think you may be picking and choosing your facts to suit your agenda while trying to discredit people who don't share it.

  • I don't know if I heard experts in the audience. There was one (I believe retired) urban planner who disagreed, indicating that the speaker did not have as much experience as she did, implying he was qualified to offer a valid opinion...that was the gist I got. Others shot down...

I don't know if I heard experts in the audience. There was one (I believe retired) urban planner who disagreed, indicating that the speaker did not have as much experience as she did, implying he was qualified to offer a valid opinion...that was the gist I got. Others shot down the urban planning speaker because he rented, and was therefore not qualified to offer an opinion in front of home owners. That was the gist I got. Then others questioned his authority, because he did not live close enough to the Max Gerber site. The bulk of the remainder of the comments seemed to me to be impassioned pleas to keep things they way they've always been. Just like they were 100 years ago when the smaller homes were built. And just as affordable as it used to be. There was one other person you might classify as an expert, Jesse Mumm, a new graduate/professor in anthropology. He also speaks at socialist events...and questioned why the entire complex couldn't be affordable housing...which got tremendous cheers. I get that people are resistant to change. And want everything affordable. You're going to find a lot more people who are comfortable with the current state and will lobby for that. Who wants to go out on a limb and say things should change dramatically or that we should reshape the community around El stops to prepare for the future? Wouldn't most people just want things to stay exactly as they are? It's much more comfortable for that person...but doesn't do much for the renters who can't afford to buy one of their half million to million+ dollar private homes, so they can live near the El.

I think what my insurance was referring to that the damages happened separate times to separate parts of my property. To file a claim costs money for the court and the lawyer. They can get many continuances and who can take off of work to appear each time? You can get a judgment against them but will they pay? I would have to wait in line as I can see the owners have had a judgment before they became a LLC. Currently they are also being sued for a house that they sold. Anther site a buyer gave 1 star with a warning about detail to work and warranties. I not being passive as I have reported them to the city and the police. I have been told that Sanitation came out. Now the dumpster that sat full of debris is gone. I have I would say probably several hundred dollars in damages. I haven't had my roof checked. I have pictures they were up there so if there is a problem I have proof. I want them to quit criminally trespassing.

What we've been doing to try and combat the increase is to replace toilets and faucets whenever possible, also putting out memos to the tenants about water conservation. Checking for leaks, even small drips and occasional running toilets make a HUGE difference and I have found that asking the tenants is about as good as asking my toddler. The best bet is to meticulously go through each unit looking for ANY sign there is or has been leaking, dripping or any water where it shouldn't be...don't forget radiators and good luck!

18X22 ROOM FOR RENT
May 1st

I am looking for a non-smoking, peace loving, cat friendly neat individual to rent a beautiful room in an amazing Arts & Crafts building in the Fullerton and Western area; tree lined street, easy parking, tons of public trans, very safe neighborhood.

The 18X22 room is in the front of the apartment. It is very private, almost like having your own studio apartment. There is a faux fireplace, stained glass windows, ceiling fan, and the front of room is all windows, so lots of light. The apartment is on the second floor so it feels like you are in the trees. The room is large enough for sitting area, office, and bedroom area. Built-in book shelves. Beautiful!

The kitchen is huge and modernized, dish washer, walk in pantry, kitchen is furnished. The bathroom is also huge and very nice, clean, subway tiles, ceiling fan. The coin laundry is in basement. There is some storage available. OK for bike in basement, real safe. 3 units in the building, so the building is quiet. I have 2 cats. No more pets are allowed.

$650.00 per month everything included (rent, utilities, cleaning supplies etc. and housekeeping.) Phone & internet not included. $650.00 security deposit and references required. Apartment available May 1st (preferred) but could be as early as April 15th or as late as June 1st as well.

So this won't be have 'SRO' /single room occupancy zoning. And to me the units are not very MICRO...or cheep. (I think the article might be mixing up the 1000sqft 2 bedroom with the 1500sqft 1 bedroom).

To me this seems like a good fit for a busy corner right by the El. This should help spread the revitalization of Milwaukee Ave further northwest.

Personally, I would NEVER pay anything close to that. I mean, my condo is half that and 1.5x the size (lol it's small) of that. But hey, it's not for everyone. Would you rather have this person rent one of these new ones and spend there cash here or take up some of the rental stock that's already dwindling as that's their only option in the area and force someone out of a cheaper apt?

  • Jerry Cargill Photographer, Teacher, Live on Milwaukee Ave.

I would say that it's better to get together with 2-3 friends and rent a floor of a two flat. Economically, that is the best way to go, and how most savvy young people have been doing it here as long as I can remember. Since wages have basically remained flat since 1980, any independent (ie:not reliant on Ps) young person has limited options as they whittle away at their college debt.

If you don't pick up that poop you might get flagged!

This topic has been addressed here ad nauseam, I don't think the offenders are reading Every Block- you know, pick up your dog poop! This afternoon, someone actually flagged a dog poop. I am not sure what to make of it- If you want to see this- take a look, I took a picture. (for some unknown reason, Everyblock pics are not going through)

https://www.flickr.com/photos/bartshore/16915159066/

  • Love the flags! You'd think the offender would be embarASSed!! In my neighborhood, some people pick up the poop in the plastic bags, THEN leave the bags behind. I don't like carrying my dogs poop around either~ I was picking up trash at the park, then stepped in dog poop~ I swear! A good deed never goes unpunished

  • CV in Logan Square Born and bred Sside, NWside transplant and love it

Want to stop people from leaving dog poop behind? Take a photo of the offender, put it on fliers and post them all over the neighborhood. While it is an action, a flag doesn't connect the offender to the offending act. I love my neighborhood but I am sick and tired of having to tightrope down the sidewalk (and now, the curb!) to avoid dog feces. It was a nicer place to live before Logan Square got hot and started attracting lazy and inconsiderate dog owners.

Water Bill

I know this has been a recent topic, but my (metered) water bill arrived today. Last March, my water bill was $83.40. This March, the bill is $177.49! I sure hope my tenants understand when they get a big increase in rent this year. And no, I don't have any leaks.

  • You might want to install water saving shower heads (if you haven't done so already).

  • Our (single family) bill went up a lot last time because we used a lot more water with our whole house humidifier. Almost double the amount with the cold temps. Maybe that's just us, but we used a lot more volume this winter.

I was told that when a property is sold that the Cook County Recorder does not notify the Cook County Assessor or the Cook County Treasurer. I see just around where I live home owners exemptions are being taken by Developers who have owned the property over year and home owners that rent out their homes. If you look at the Cook County Treasurer site the properties are in the former owner's name and the developer have paid the lower tax because the home owner's exemption is still applied. Also does the assessment show the value of the old homes that have been majorly rehabbed and worth a lot more. How often does someone go out and look at these properties. Or people getting senior exemptions when it's not a single family home and has rental apartments.

Before they raise our property taxes shouldn't there be a more efficient and effective ways of determining what real estate tax is due on each property?. Instead of raising our taxes shouldn't they make sure everyone is paying what they are suppose to pay?

Development around Kedzie/Armitage?

Does anyone know what's happening in the building across from Scofflaw (MuveMusic building) on the NW corner of Kedzie and Armitage? My boyfriend received a hint from someone at Scofflaw that "something good" was coming, but no more details were offered. I also wondered if anyone had heard any plans about anything coming into the other vacant buildings on the north side of Armitage in that general area (for example, there are a few vacant storefronts between the cleaners and Walgreens, east of Kedzie)?

this change in compensation practices has reduced the take-home pay for some of the employees it was supposed to help: Oakland restaurant Homestead, servers are taking “a substantial pay cut,” earning a flat wage of $18 to $24 an hour, no tips instead of the $35 to $55 an hour they were earning when tips were included.

Mulch by the truck load

Are there any places nearby that sell mulch by the truck load? Or is there a way to rent a truck (Home Depot) and go get a truckload of mulch? Our building has a mulch bed that runs the entire parkway of a half block. We've had the outfit that mows our tiny yards install and refill it in the past, but wouldn't mind doing it myself if the economics are right. And I've looked into going to Home Depot, or something similar, and buying by the bag and that did not seem like a reasonable option.

My hubby and I were married at Promontory Point, which is a Chicago Park District building right along Lake Michigan. Cheap rental, and we brought in our own booze and catering and music. Beautiful place. Indoor seating with huge wall of glass doors that open facing the Lake and a nice stone patio outdoors. One thing though: Because it's a park building, random people can come through to use the bathrooms, so you need to keep that in mind :) It's been awhile, so just check out current rules/regs on the Chicago Park District Website. http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/parks/Burnham-Park/

Actually, here is the link for "special event venues", where you can find the rental rates, etc. for Promontory Point as well as other Park buildings:

Letizia's New Space and a Fundraiser for Logan Square Schools

Check out Letizia's new wine shop and, for the next 3 weeks, 10% of retail sales will go to support Friends of Brentano and Friends of Goethe.

This Thursday the 26th is the Grand opening party starting at 6:30 pm including food, wine tasting and a gnocchi making demonstration by Letizia herself! A great way to stock up the wine cellar!

Also, if you have a wine cellar, we should be friends.

Found cat - Milwaukee & Sawyer

Found a young male grey tabby on our porch this morning. Collar but no tags. Very friendly, but seemed scared to be outside. We are keeping him safe inside.

  • Just this morning, I brought a friendly stray, which had been beat to a bloody pulp, possibly by a dog or another cat, into the Tree House clinic. They're transferring him to an ER. Make no mistake, any outdoor cat, feral or someone's pet, can suffer an excruciating plight.

  • time and again, it's posters that work...put on the corner lamp posts and in neighbors' doors. the owner -- or someone who recognizes the cat and knows who it belongs to -- may contact you. a lot of older pet owners are not looking online...

AT&T Internet Issues

Anyone else in Logan/surrounding neighborhoods having problems with the Internet since last night? I haven't had a chance to call yet but was wondering if we were the only ones. We already hate our service anyway--this might be the straw that breaks the camel's back!

  • Deepti Logan Resident

Also not available in our area! He made certain that we shouldn't be charged unless they try to fix something on one of our home devices (e.g. ipad, computer, etc) which I know for a fact they won't be even touching. I have had my fair share of angry phone calls to AT&T so I am ready to have another if needed :) I will get that number from you if it's necessary though!

  • I thought they said 'if they come into the home' to check..interested to see what happens. Thanks for the information!

I don't know where your car is, or if you'll ever see it again but I want to tell you that it is likely that you will see it again one day. The same thing happened to my partner's car twice, also CRV @same age and miraculously it came back to us. Report it as I am certain you did, and as I have practiced since two returns of his CRV, if you see a what looks to be abandoned car in your neighborhood ditched after a joy ride, call police!

Here's to hoping your car turns up.

  • Keep checking to see if any parking tixs come up as well but the police may call you if they find it abandoned. What does your insurance say to do? I got mine back ..in pieces...5 days later. Good luck!

Is this your brown tabby?

In the process of searching for my lost cat, I found this sweet brown tabby the morning of Saturday, March 21. Very sweet with a cute squeaky meow. Seems like an indoor cat who may have been out on the streets for a little while-some injuries from scuffles. I took this cat to Anticruelty Society to get medical attention and to find its home, but now he has been transferred to Animal Care and Control. If this sounds like your cat, please check with them!!! Or if you would like to adopt this sweet cat and give him a chance, please contact me!!!
