Walking on Sacramento under highway

Does anyone regularly walk on Sacramento under the highway? It is the best route to get where I need to go occasionally starting in February, but I don't love the under the bridge feeling... I'll give it a try but I'm just curious if folks walk there regularly, have any problems, are other people walking there too etc? I would need to walk there around 8am and 5pm. Thanks!

  • Those are pretty high traffic times. Yeh, get a pepper spray; Menards, automotive section, hanging up.

  • Laura social worker, vegan, avondale resident

I walk, bike, and jog through there frequently. I think that as long as you stay aware of your surroundings, you'll be okay. I also agree that the hours you'll be there are ones that are high traffic, so you probably won't be isolated as you walk under the highway.

Found two very sweet dogs in an alley off of McLean Ave. near Kedzie Blvd. on Saturday night around 8pm. One is a female Rottweiler and other is a small mix breed male. They're the best of friends so they must live together. They had no tags and no chips. If these are your dogs or if you know the owner, please contact me!!

Looking for wood shop space to rent..

Hi, three friends and I are looking for a wood shop space to rent in the Wicker Park, Bucktown, Logan Square neighborhood. Ideally we'd hope to have the space to ourselves and pay monthly rent. If you know of anyone with a vacant garage/building that wouldn't mind the noise and sawdust please let me know! Note, we would be providing all our own tools so we're basically just needing an empty room with electricity.

Thanks!

  • Susan S. resident

  • Bryan Banser Triangle Auto Service

Mikaela, or anyone else interested, we have 2 spaces that may work for you. Let me know if you are interested. Were located at Irving and Elston ave. Both areas have an alarm. We will work with you, if you would like to see them. One space was used as a wood shop, with plenty of light and as much storage as needed. Bryan 773-539-5858.

Question about front yard fences

My neighbor is putting up a fence to close off the courtyard of their building. Where he is putting the fence will completely block the side of my porch and if I need porch repairs or gutter repairs, the fence will make it hard to get to. The fence is on his property line but I want to know if it is legal for him to put a fence up literally 6 inches from my porch and blocking it off.

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

The typical 5-6' cedar fence definitely requires a permit:

"Fence – taller than 5 feet, may not exceed 6 feet"

  • Bger East Village neighbor

Perhaps you can ask you neighbor to put in a "gate" at your porch. If it cost a little extra to do you could volunteer to pay the additional cost. He could keep the gate padlocked and when you need access to your porch he could unlock it for you. It may cost you a little now, but would save money down the road.

Congress Theatre Open House - Jan. 24 1-4PM?

Is this happening? Cannot find anything referenced other than in this article. Anyone plan on stopping in tomorrow? Do we expect the renderings to be presented?

http://chicago.curbed.com/archives/2015/01/13/congress-theater-redevelopment-ready-to-move-forward.php

  • should be noted they are hoping to have the storefronts filled sooner than that 2 year timeline.

Last June, Jim De Rogatis, at WBEZ, wrote that the sale of the Congress was being blocked by Jam Productions and React Presents / SFX due to theater owner, Eddie Carranza's previous deals with both groups.

Jam's consideration to allow the sale to go through was based on Mr Moyers intent for the Congress Theater's (then) plan:

    http://www.wbez.org/blogs/jim-derogatis/2014-06/whither-chicago%E2%80%99s-historic-theaters-110273

"Jam traditionally has done its best to thwart the sale of any theater the size of the Congress to bigger national concert rivals such as SFX or Live Nation. But it supports the sale to Moyer because his vision for the Congress is more in line with Broadway in Chicago, not live music, and because it has its hands more than full with the Uptown Theater, which it purchased (amid fierce competition with Live Nation) in the summer of 2008."

So, I'm now wondering why the planned use of the Congress Theater has changed from earlier reports of "not live music" to a "concert" venue?

Kids stealing packages

Around 3:35 I saw a group of kids running north on the 2400 block of Spaulding Ave (about halfway between Fullerton and Altgeld). They ran up the stairs of a porch across the street from me, grabbed some packages that were on the stoop, and ran away down an alley. I couldn't tell if they had taken anything from more than one house.

I called 311, but was told I couldn't report it because I wasn't the victim. I'll let my neighbors know, but I just wanted to let people in the area know to be on the lookout and watch out for their packages. The kids were male and probably early to mid teens .

This is just the list of packages I found in the park. Many other people commented about this problem happening to them.

I was able to return a few boxes on the 1700 block but most items were stolen… On Friday we had a package turn up missing on Troy. The kicker is that we were home and looking for the delivery. I think that someone must have been following the delivery driver as we were both looking for the package...

. . If I had the time I would bait this kids but sadly it really would be wasted time. I doubt I could prove anything if they did not have any items on them. It would be hilarious to hit them with a little bear spray though...

Logan Pets out of business

I just received this email today about Logan Pets going out of business. I am so upset and disappointed. The owners are wonderful people and this was a rare location where my 13 year old dog loved to be groomed.

  • Hey Logan Pet Lovers, I found a great place to take my dog for grooming. Animal Lovers Pet Salon on Clybourn. They have been there for 18 years and Chip the owner is a Logan Sq. resident. They are offering FREE pickup and delivery to all Logan Sq.residents. I took my dog Sadie there for the first time on Saturday, she looks the best she ever has,and it was even less expensive than Logan Pet was. What a great find!

I had to 'make and take' a red wiggler bin to get full credit for Master Composter degree and the winter had them 'especially happy' in the basement so I have two huge bins ready to share. You need a plastic tub with lid that has 1/4 inch holes punched in top for air and then we tear up newspaper, throw in a little garden dirt, wet so it is like a 'rung out sponge', and put in the worms. They eat 'left over' lettuce, coffee grounds, etc (except onions, peppers, citrus). Easy VERY EASY to care for in basement or garage (some people keep them under the sink..no smell)
This is the best 'soil' you will find and excellent for seedlings. You separate the worms from the 'soil' (I can tell you how) and use the soil in your garden, house plants, etc. YOU MUST NOT put the worms in composters or soil outside as they are not native and they eat constantly and will eat all the surface plants.
If you are interested, please let me know and it will be another reason for spring to come quickly!@

I wanted to introduce myself to the community and share some observations with my fellow neighbors. I live by the Addison and Pulaski intersection (I believe that's Avondale area?), I live with my partner and his family. I had moved from Albany Park, where I was a witness to a shooting, and coincidentally I also witnessed the shooting by Addison and Pulaski last month (talk about wrong place at the wrong time).
Before I moved in with my partner he assured me that his neighborhood, or at least his block was safe. However, I'm starting to notice that, that might not be the case soon. For one I have noticed increased tagging on buildings on Pulaski, more specifically the old Frame building they are currently remodeling, the black door next to Windy Cindy Market, and many more.
More recently, this past Sunday (January 18), while driving back home we scared off two guys on our block. One ran off into the yard of a house and the other tried to casually walk away. When we drive back around they had already met up again and were walking south on Karlov by Eddy.
I have also seen an increase hit on my RSS feed for crimes in my area, around Belmont and Kevin, and that is really starting to concern me.
I would love to get to know my neighbors a lot better and see if we can come up with a way to ensure our neighborhood doesn't get any worse. I am open to any idea; meeting up, flyers, whatever it takes.
Anyway, that is it for now, hope y'all have a great Friday.

  • Get to know the people on your block, across the alley and up the street. don't be afraid to call the alderman (Reboyras) or the police if you see or hear something hinky. Walking distance from the blue line, 2 Metra stops, Smoque, Berrista, Sabatinos, the neighborhood is a hidden gem.

  • I live by Addison and Pulaski, but I venture regularly into the Avondale area. I was just pointing out that this increased crime activity is terrible in any neighborhood, but it's proximity especially concerns me.
Thank you guys for the other suggestions, I will definitely be looking into the CAPS meetings in my neighborhood and I will see if I can plan something with my neighbors.

spark energy update?

The other day, caught off guard, I allowed myself to switch to Spark Energy due to the persistence of two door to door salesmen. Looking at past threads on this topic, it seems lots of folks have had bad experiences, and some folks have seen reduced savings and feel it is a legit company with bad solicitation tactics.

Was I scammed? I feel like a goof for ignoring my gut. Thanks!

  • Joe

I have saved with first energy for electricity and direct energy on gas (except Dec, Peoples would have been cheaper) Peoples gas charge changes every month. Lots of threads on this.

  • Like kittyhop says, read the receipt they gave you - you have maybe a week from the signing date during which you can cancel. Not sure of the exact time limit; it IS short. But if you do some quick research you can decide whether Spark is worth it for a year.

Just got a ticket in violation of code 0964100G STOP SIGN OR TRAFFIC SIGNAL which, after further research, is for parking too close to a stop sign. Apparently the code states you have to be 30 FEET from a stop sign or traffic signal, however, I can't actually find the code. I plan on attempting to contest it. This just seems like some BS way of creating revenue, especially when there are no signs posted or markings on the curb and there are and have been several cars parked just as close to the stop sign or in the same exact spot for years, and I've never seen a car ticketed ONCE. I'm mad. Anyone have any suggestions for anything I can do to be productive? Otherwise, I will just stew in my anger and out $60. This was at the stop sign at Spaulding and Schubert, near the blue line.

  • Piper - I've gotten a ticket in the exact spot you mention. I have seen other cars ticketed there since, but the enforcement is very irregular so you will see people parked there basically 24/7. I never intentionally park illegally but it's a very confusing area since the stop sign...

Piper - I've gotten a ticket in the exact spot you mention. I have seen other cars ticketed there since, but the enforcement is very irregular so you will see people parked there basically 24/7. I never intentionally park illegally but it's a very confusing area since the stop sign is not very near the corner or the crosswalk.

I've even asked a parking enforcement person who was writing tickets what areas are legal in that dead end and what are not. She told me that parallel to the curb was ok, except near the stop sign, corner, and fire hydrant. She also said that the "head in" spots were legal "about half-way" (?!?) across the dead end but this is apparently subjective because my husband just received a ticket when parked there. Grrrrr. Actually he received two within 24 hours -- we appealed both by mail & got the duplicate dismissed, at least.

Also, as a head's up, I've gotten a ticket parallel parked on the north side of that dead end for parking in the wrong direction when pointed toward Milwaukee. Apparently some others have too because now you will see cars parked in both directions on that side (nose to nose or tail to tail). I've been on this block for almost 8 years and never saw anyone parked pointed away from Milwaukee until this year. (For those not familiar, the dead end is all of 3 cars long & has no room to turn around.) I can't even see how cars get in there that way without some illegal driving moves. I just avoid that whole area as much as possible, but as you know parking is sometimes tough to find.

I'd gladly avoid parking illegally if I could only figure out what is legal. :( Who could I ask to get a definitive answer? I'd also be happy to pursue getting reasonable signage/paint if possible - I guess the alderman would be the starting point?

  • I know this is an old post, but I wanted to chime in that I contest every single ticket I or my husband get, most of which have been for this violation of parking too close to a stop sign. I would say they throw out 2 of 3. It is ALWAYS worth a shot, just don't forget to take and include photos in your contest!

Lost Lake coming to former Previous Administration Spot

Hi again, everyone. I read in Zagat's list of most anticipated spots of 2015 that our neighbor Paul McGee had joined forces with the Land & Sea Dept. folks - and that we're getting a tiki bar. Well, Lost Lake is opening up at Diversey & Kedzie, where Previous Administration was briefly. Should be opening sometime this month. With this, and Son of a Butcher opening at Diversey & Richmond soon, it's gonna be exciting up here!

Rent vs. ownership

I think one of the key issues is that these small businesses rent rather than own. Ideally, if a small business can own the property, it can avoid increase in rents, etc. I know, a pipe dream for many but if you can own your building it would seem much easier to run your business.

  • Hayek Not FDIC Insured | May lose value

Larry - It is true that companies that make it and stay in the same location for 25 years will probably have done better to buy than rent. But to generalize your experience is to allow survivor bias to creep in as you ignore the fact that very few businesses last 25 years and even fewer in the same location.

Most fledgling companies would never be approved for a property loan without a personal guarantee. And even if they could, it still might not make sense. You may want to move, expand, contract, etc. Renting, while more expensive, provides this flexibility which is EXTREMELY valuable.

  • Carter O'Brien Chicagoan

I think these are all good points, and it's valuable to hear a wide range of opinions on the subject. One nuance I haven't heard discussed per se is just how much customization does your business require, in terms of infrastructure build out. The owner of a law office may not feel a need to purchase the property as moving is relatively painless. A dentist may see it differently due to equipment requirements, a yoga studio owner who breaks his/her back to put in really nice hardwood flooring, etc.

One of the most important things when having tuckpointing done on an old brick house is that the correct lime-based mortar be used, and not the contemporary kind using Portland cement. Plus the pointing should be recessed, not protruding or flush with the bricks. In old brick construction, both the bricks and mortar were porous, allowing for escape of moisture and expasion/contraction (kind of "breathing") with conditions. Contemporary (Portland cement based) mortar is higher strength and non-porous - so moisture can be retained and lead to cracking and peeling of the brick. And the recessing of the pointing is related to allowing the rain to drip off; I just can't remember the details.

Touch of Vintage Closed up - 2500 block of California?

I noticed the empty store front on the 2500 block of California. Use to be a little antique shop next to the hair salon. Did they move? Lot seems to be changing over there. Expanded salon, new Japanese toy store and new mercantile bar heading in. I wonder if the two sushi places will survive.

About Letizia's on California....I believe that her son Fabio has / is running a good share of the business and they've been building up the restaurant side (Enoteca Roma) for years. First on Division and now in Logan Sq., just a guess that it's been successful--they seem like smart business owners and continually re-invest in their businesses to help them grow. So having watched them over the years, it seems a natural progression, not so much a major shift in concept.

  • Pasta college looks cool! It sounds like Starbucks was taking the biz for bkfast and coffee. Not sure how I feel about 2 liquor stores within a block of each other.
