Furniture donation and pick up

I have some friends looking to donate furniture and need it picked up by the end of this weekend. They have asked a bunch of places, including Salvation Army. No one has been able to pick up this week. Any suggestions of maybe some more obscure organizations that would do this and need furniture?

Dog Stories/ Humboldt Park (+)

On the pillars at the garden area with the buffalo couple (which my dog thought were 'real' the first time we walked there) is now a bright pink heart with 'It's a Girl' painted in the middle. It would be so interesting to find out what that 'story' is about......

Did you see WBEZ's story on gentrification in Logan Square?

My colleague Chip Mitchell did an interesting story on how gentrification is affecting Logan Square. What'd you think of it? Did he miss anything?
http://www.wbez.org/news/real-estate-developer-hot-area-sees-bright-future-%E2%80%94-and-displacement-111231

  • Ben 60622: Let me complete that coverage for you: White Flight is the reason these neighborhoods became depressed. Whites left and so did the City services. With Gentrification (which can be a good thing) return the Whites and the City services.

  • Mike Conover '90's HP block orginizing,CAPS- resident since '07

City services follows investment (and also clout-but that can work in the favor of a tightly nit minority community). Investment follows cash flow (those that can pay for housing, goods and services). Cash and cash flow ARE more in the hands of white/Anglos than others; and racial & ethnic discrimination ARE definite economic factors; but I see Green as a bigger discriminator than Black/White/Brown. A better focus than race (in my opinion)? Jobs and economic development.

Another Package Theft

At 2pm today a package was stolen from my front porch near Armitage and Sawyer.
I was able to get a look at the theives from behind as they walked out of the alley and onto Armitage Ave near Kedzie, and two women witnessed the theft.

They are wearing all black, head to toe. One man was black and the second hispanic, both about 5'6- 5'8.

UPS claims they left the package with someone, but they clearly did not.
BE CAREFUL and have packages sent somewhere else, especially for the holiday season.

  • I want to start leaving decoy packages out ... with a video camera on them. I haven't had any losses yet, but I don't want to miss out on the fun.

  • Has anyone ever tried installing a package-sized drop-box for delivery services?

Found cat

Found Orange tabby cat on N Lawndale on School & Lawndale the night of December 12, very friendly and clearly an indoor cat. Brought to the vet, the cat is not fixed and there was no microchip.

Email me for more pictures or details.

Cat was brought to Animal Care and Control:

2741 S. Western Ave

Cat's number at Animal Care and Control is ID#A122654.

  • Early in Avondale Pet owner

I went to pick up the cat at 2 today and was told that the owner had picked him up earlier today. Hopefully the owner will take proper care of the cat now that he is back home. It's great to know that there are so many pet lovers in the neighborhood.

  • Diana Davis-Tounsi My Kind Of Town

Thanks everybody for all your help in trying to keep this cat alive. Hopefully he will be safe from now on. Happy Holidays!

Orange Tabby (name is Chief)

I found an agency that would take in the Orange Tabby from Lawndale if someone is willing to pick up and drop it off. Not sure how to go about this. They believe that the cat is held just for up to 7 days.

  • thank you to everyone who tried to help out this lovely cat who has a tough life...

  • Scooter's Mom Buena Park resident

This is a relief. Also, if he appears to be further neglected by his current owners, I would be willing to foster him and get him veterinary care until a "forever" home is found. Thanks everyone!

Let's Get our Video Cameras Connected to CPD District/Cental Command

Being the IT Dept and administrator to the cameras that protect our Condo association since 2009, I have seen firsthand the power this tool has to solve crime. We've been subpoenaed twice and have produced useful video evidence for another dozen or so incidents over the last 5 years that all have helped make this community stronger. High ranking CPD Chief McNaughton has already successfully launched a pilot program in his previous position in Lawndale and we're very close to the reality where hiding from the law is no longer an option.

  • Smart Bike Parts Local Bike Shop

Greetings Strike 3 - Back in 2009 we hired ADT to install 8 cameras around our property. Bike shop payed half and condo assoc payed half. Total cost of installation and equipment (cameras + DVR + Closed Circuit TV) was around $2K. Then we subscribed to 2DVR.com for $10/month and all residents have access to all the cameras 24/7 via their phones or computers.

  • VW

Has anyone had the cops use a screen grab from a store-bought webcam connected via wifi? My ADT guy said that unless the security system uses closed circuit/hardwired and sealed system the cops won't use it because it could be tampered with (at least in the eyes of the court)--just curious if that is in fact the case, or if he was just being by the book.

Hi Neighbors,

Does anyone have a rain barrel? If so, I would love to see your setup or just ask some questions. Please post here or PM me.

Thanks!

Orange Tabby found on Lawndale now at CACC

I spoke to Dr Abby at Felines & Canines. She is aware of the situation and said they are not able to pick up the cat, but will take him in and put him up for adoption if we could get him to them. She knows me and said she would do this as a favor. I am just not sure what it entails to pick up the cat. When I call CACC they will not release any information to me.

  • You can check out CACC Cat Transfer Teams FB page for instructions on how to pull the cat. Basically you will have to get an approved rescue to put a hold on him and get him pulled.

Yet another package stolen

Hi all,

Just wanted to give a heads up, had a package stolen from my porch on the 3200 block of W. McLean Ave. FedEx tracking number states "left on porch" at 11:26 am. I got the mail at noon, nothing there.

We generally request packages to have signature on delivery, however this was a gift sent from my in-laws (actually the last package they shipped went missing as well). I work from home, doorbell never rang.

I filed a police report, had FedEx run a "trace", etc.

If you happen to see this fancy ottoman hanging out in a nearby alley give me a shout I guess!

http://www.hayneedle.com/product/garrettdoublestorageottomanwithtraysideottomans.cfm

Thanks!

  • (Good to hear about 'Hayneedle'. Actually looking at chicken houses thru them..The ottoman looks nice as well.)

Please consider out local UPS location at Cal and Arm. It is locally owned and I have a 'house account' there and they always have been terrific. Really terrific!

Please consider out local UPS location at Cal and Arm. It is locally owned and I have a 'house account' there and they always have been terrific. Really terrific!

Fed Ex 'lost' me an major account when they 'never picked up' at a box in Hicksville, NY (home of the first Ikea store) and then lost a 'signed contract' worth over $40,000...so I would never give them 'another chance'.

I've NEVER had any trouble with UPS.

  • FedEx will hold your packages at any of their locations without a fee. I usually have mine held at the Kinko's in Division and it's very easy to pick up as they are open late and on weekends. UPS is not nearly as flexible unfortunately

Shooting at Pulaski and Addison?

Just went out to the 7-11, and there is police tape up, a cruiser there, and obvious little markers for ballistics, with an officer snapping pics. The guy at the 7-11 said that either two cars were shooting at each other, or that a fight over at Brudders went out onto the street and one person shot another. Anyone have any details?

  • Frank Skony Long time Resident

Clarification - the tape and cruiser are outside of the Manee Thai restaurant on Pulaski.

  • from the Tribune this morning: A 22-year-old man was wounded in a shooting around 10:20 p.m. in the Old Irving Park neighborhood, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro.

The man was seating in the front passenger seat in a jeep in the 4000 block of West Addison Street when a male walked up and fired gunshots.

The man was shot in the right thigh and was driven to the 17th District police station before being transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where his condition stabilized.

Neighbor Violence

I own my second floor condo and have been happy there until the downstairs neighbor decided to sublet her unit to a couple that smokes so much pot the third floor neighbors have to open their windows. What's worse, is the abuse that happens late at night. I hear screaming and pleading "Don't hit me!" I call the cops who stop by and leave minutes later - only to have the abuse continue. It is unsettling.

I've contacted the landlord who does not respond to my calls.

What else can I do?

  • Bill Billo

The people who own the property are completely responsible. You need to speak to the owner directly and inform him that known illegal activity in the form of narcotics and physical violence is currently taking place by his tenants and if he doesn't do something fast your association will

And shouldn't you just keep calling if the police stop by and the abuse continues? I know it is not what you want to doing but every time you make a call and every time they come, a 'dot' and report go into the computer.
ALSO keep a 'log': date, times, calls, police coming, smelling smoke, etc... Do it now if you haven't..go back and re-create it. It really makes a difference to have written records. Good luck!

Hi friends - I wanted to share an exciting potential opportunity for the Logan Square neighborhood - to be the home of the "Foodseum" - Chicago's first Food Museum!

I learned about this project in the works a couple of weeks ago through an article on Eater.com http://www.eater.com/2014/11/24/7276629/chicagos-first-food-museum-foodseum-campaign Their website has more details: http://www.foodseum.org/#home

They are in the middle of a Kickstarter campaign to open their first interactive exhibit as early as Spring 2015: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/foodseum/chicagos-food-museum

The location has not been decided, but I immediately thought Logan Square would be the perfect location, with all the new restaurant activity, fantastic farmer's market, and plans for a future rare-fruit orchard.

After pledging my support, I emailed my thoughts to their executive director, Kyle Joseph, who personally wrote me back to thank me. He said that they are "big fans" of LS and they have been keeping an eye out there, and agreed that LS would be a great fit. He encouraged me to pass along the word in the neighborhood and said he would be happy to speak to fellow residents and supporters.

If you like this idea, please pass it along, donate to the campaign, and email the museum founders and organizers that you would love for Foodseum to come to Logan Square!

  • LD

Agreed, I have nothing against the idea of the museum (I'd def visit out of curiosity), I just wouldn't invest in it as I am doubtful of its sustenance. Ditto for the juice bar (if the profit margins actually float the juice bar for a while, it will close as soon as the craze dies down, vitamixes get cheaper, or another, less expensive juice bar opens), although I think there's a big difference b/t restaurant/retail and hospitality/entertainment and not sure the 2 are comparable.

  • Carter O'Brien Chicagoan

There's of course nothing wrong with people having opinions. There is however a special place in hell for those who comment negatively on web stories/projects, etc they didn't even bother to visit before forming said opinions.

Two young pit bulls loose on the block

My husband and I just got off the Fullerton bus at Lawndale and two young pit bulls ran up to us and followed us to our door and tried to come home with us. They were friendly, and looked like they were being taken care of, but no collars or tags. I reported their location to 311 in case anyone is looking for them.

acupuncture and chiropractor?

Is there a Logan square facility that offers both services at the same location that anyone would recommend.? I have both arthritic and alignment issues going on but limited time (and $) to deal with both.

  • Sage Community Health Collective is an amazing place. They do fantastic acupuncture and they also have massage and other things, though I am not sure about chiro. Anyway, they have a wonderful mission that these services should be available to everyone, so they work on a sliding scale. If you do community acupuncture (which is a quiet room with several people getting it at once - it's not as weird as it sounds at ALL) - it's even less. I went there for several months and loved it. http://sagecommunityhealth.org/

This week-end there was a huge hawk 'posing' on the ground while someone not quite close took phone pictures. It appeared to be @ 2' tall and eventually flew up in a near by tree and posed some more. (I haven't seen any pigeons in that area lately either.)

As 'The Miss' and I went on our walk, we saw two pretty ladies walking arm-in-arm. I think they are sisters. One has a smile that could melt the snow; the other is a special needs adult who I do not believe can speak. I always say 'Hello' and the special needs lady released her companion's hand to give me a hug...a nice big hug.

Then she started to cry. Large tears. I said "Please don't be sad" and her companion said "Oh, she cries when she is happy." I said 'Well, then just keep hugging and I'm glad you are happy'.

If you see them in the park, please do say 'Hello' (Hugs are optional...)

  • I bet you saw a Coopers Hawk. One flew into our backyard a few years back so I did a little research to identify the species. It might have been 2 ft. but in a little Chicago backyard, it looked like a giant Condor.

  • I saw a hawk that fits the description in my yard a few days ago.

  • i have seen that hawk a few times… it really looks like massive compared to the other birds around there...and I am pretty sure I have seen what is left of the rabbits/pigeons it destroys… looks like a small explosion of feathers & fur in the middle of the field, with nothing else around…

the hawk i saw had quite a bit of white on it, so the coopers hawk looks to be it

Coming soon to Diversey and Richmond

This new bar and restaurant maybe a great addition to Logan Square. I have heard several different explanations as to just what it might be, stay tuned.

  • "A large ham selection will hang from behind the bar, and every guest, whether ordering a glass of wine at the bar or sitting down for a meal, will get a complimentary wooden board with a handful of fresh slices of meat like prosciutto or Spanish-style jamon with some pickles."
    How cool...

  • sounds interesting, I wish them success.
