While they may be doing "good work" in the community, it doesn't save the fact that the mural is an eye sore and has nothing to do with Logan Square. In the statement on their site, they say they wanted to promote cohesiveness and the cultures of the community. There's no sign of that. Many people might have been working on the mural, but one "artist" executed the watercolor like design. It's a very poor execution.

Do you see a bejeweled peacock roaming around the Square or a melted lion pawing down Fullerton? The background color blends - and I use the term blend loosely - are poorly executed. Feathers on a wall? That's asking for destruction by Mother Nature alone. The text scribbled on the wall is tiny and unreadable, even invisible, from a distance.

For a mural to be effective and "welcome the world to Logan Square", make it cohesive and bold. Any other mural in the city that speaks to people - and that go relatively untouched - is raw, empowering, and meaningful to their locations. This mural is anything but those descriptors, as the Beauty & Brawn Gallery describes art on their site.

And for the record, the artist Slotnick said “I am interested in walls as living space. I want the wall to keep growing and changing as the world does.” Why not let it grow and change with the neighborhood showing off their art? Don't we all have a right to express ourselves?

It is a really bad mural. Didn't deserve to be hit, but the graffiti that was painted over the mural was far from illegible. One of the pieces was like a 'cute' animal head waving 'hello' in a very stylized way. Again though, it is a waaaack mural that does not represent the history, grit or future of Logan Square. It looks like art your grandmother made after she retired. No brush control, poor composition and the colors make me nauseous every time I pass by it.

More to the point is why was a Roscoe Village based artist asked to come in and do this piece? Is Logan really that bereft of artists? Obviously not. I wouldn't be surprised if the tag was retaliatory in that sense. Why wouldn't this gallery commission a LS based artist? Very strange.

Obviously though, no one is advocating that the thing be vandalized and it's still not right it happened. But. Still. Wack mural.

An Orchard at the Megamall Parking Lot?

Wild: This Chicagoist article seems to indicate that the gravel parking lot by the Megamall will be turned into an orchard. I haven't seen anything else on this yet, but this is quite a development if it's true.

More good from this, I love it. Yes it is nice to offer a reward but we should do good because it is the right thing to do, and not to be rewarded. I am not surprise the person who returned it also told you to pay it forward. Oh if everybody could always be so good and neighborly...How much better would/could the city we already love be?

My boyfriend was home at the time and went out to speak with them. He got the name of the company hired by the city of Chicago to do the work. It was Summit construction. He then called Summit and tried to get them to fix it. At first the secretary was very nice, and seemed to be trying to help him. Saying, she'll pass off the info and someone will contact us. Weeks went by, multiple calls and now no responses. We then called the police to get an assessor out to report it. Now again, weeks, and no responses. Multiple calls, and emails and we are getting no one to help.
Our fence is now rusting, and the gate door is not closing properly since the damage. It is now only getting worse.
Can anyone help us? Give us advice as to what to do. At this point, I am at a loss.
Thanks!
Kate

You may have already done this but you'll need to send a form to the City Claim Unit. Here's the general link with the specific link to the property damage form and address for mailing. I would recommend sending it certified receipt through the mail and retain a copy for yourself should you need to pursue it in litigation. I would avoid that given the costs involved and you'll need to exhaust the administrative remedy first, in any event:

    http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/dol/provdrs/claims.html

I would include on a cover letter with the form and on the form itself the name of the subcontractor and a demand for that subcontractor's insurance policy information. You hopefully won't need it and will have your claim resolved through the City but it doesn't hurt to have the information (and get their attention) should you have to pursue it outside of the City administrative process. Also, submit the records you have noting the calls and/or emails you may have exchanged with the various parties thus far. That won't necessarily be considered when adjusting your claim but it will call attention to the run-around you've been getting with the subcontractor thus far.

    Good luck!

  • Peter Gamen painter

Thank you for the last comment. There is some very useful information there. We have filled out the claim, nearly 3 weeks ago at this point. When I call to check on the progress I am told that it is still an open case. That is why we have posted on here. Sure we know we can go to court with this, simply wanted to know if there is any way to get the attention of the correct person on the matter.

Received check for deceased former resident of the house...

What can I do with this? At the risk of sounding anti-capitalist, it seems a shame to let this health insurance company keep their refund amount when maybe the next of kin of this lady could benefit? Does anyone know how to track down next of kin, or more importantly if checks like this are even cashable by a dead person's survivors?

  • Thanks, everyone! I'll get it back to the company (happily knowing they are required to get it to the entitled parties) or the state as unclaimed - whichever is easier for me.

The former resident wasn't the owner, so the entity I bought from has no connection to her. In fact, the entity I bought from wasn't even the original owner, it was a church that was given the house by the heirs to the house. Less than zero connection!

@deb1259 - you're 100% right on all counts. As to opening the letter, I accept and agree with your 'not judgment', but after 6 months of a seemingly unstoppable (and I have tried) flood of mail addressed to dead people, I make no apologies for my cavalier handling of it :)

Anyone had luck with antique window repair?

have some of those big old windows with original glass that are in good to fair condition but sticky / painted shut...one has missing panes. has anyone been able to find a reasonable repair source? (if it gets to be $600 or more per windows, it kind of forces you to go with new ugly windows, which is a shame as these windows have survived for more than 100 years) and do all the companies take the windows completely out to do the repairs or do any leave them in?

I happened upon the clinic during a walk with my son over the past weekend and set an appointment for last night. Community-style acupuncture treatments cost only $25.00 per treatment (first treatment adds $10.00), and private appointments are available if wanted/needed. I am a licensed acupuncturist myself, and I've experienced acupuncture in many different environments. I had a great experience last night during my appointment and will be back. If you are at all interested in trying acupuncture and/or Chinese herbal medicine as a treatment option for yourself, I highly recommended checking this place out. In my opinion, a good, professional and affordable clinic that offers alternative medicine will only enhance the sustainability and enjoyability of our community! http://www.fivepointholistichealth.com/

Blue Can - Recycle Service

A quick neighborhood survey: How often does the blue cans get emptied in your neck of the woods?

As of late it's been erratic in my neighborhood--sometime up to takes 3 weeks to get collected. I call 311 and I am impressed that it gets picked up within a day or 2. Does anyone have insight why they don't come on a weekly basis? And how it can be set up to do so?

  • Bearmosa Resident of Hermosa

Mine is consistently picked up every other Monday. As others have said, they are getting more particular about following what is recyclable. I take care when packing the bins, but I did get dinged for having a bit of Styrofoam in there once.

  • gpblight 15 Yr East Garfield Resident

What does it mean dinged for having styrofoam? Does that mean the yellow stickers are a ticket with a fine?

Teachers can (and most of them do!) work their a**es off for their kids, but if the kids don't have their parents as their FIRST and FOREMOST teachers, how can teachers succeed across the board and up to the standards they are held to? It is a team effort- you cannot have successful schools without parents doing their jobs- you need to remember that!

Guadulupe Millin, 59, was upset when she left her home in the 3600 block of West Diversey, and has not contacted her family since, according to a missing person alert from Chicago Police.

Millin is described as a 5-foot-3, 160-pound Hispanic woman with brown eyes, brown and gray hair, and a fair complexion. She was last seen wearing a dark brown blouse, blue jeans and sandals, police said.

I remember that day and I had no reason to be or park on California. There is no picture printed on the ticket or online that I can see and obviously I never got a hard copy on my windshield. I'm contesting..not sure if I'll get anywhere as the only proof I have is some text messages setting up to meet with my client at that time. I suppose she can vouch for me but not sure if that even has any weight. Anyone gotten a similar ticket lately? Just wondering if a cop is running around giving bogus tickets or if maybe my license plate number got transposed or something with the actual car at fault. Really frustrating!

Years ago when we first moved to the city we got a ticket for no city sticker our first week. The law is you have 30 days to obtain one (at least it was back then). We contested by mail with evidence of our least out of town, our new lease in Chicago and moving receipts and we lost.

I was so livid, I contacted Pam Zekman at CBS 2 and our case was one featured on a news story about bogus tickets. We ended up having to sue the city for our money back. We ended up winning our case and they also had to pay all our court costs. My wife was unemployed at the time so we had nothing but spare time to fight it but it did take a lot of time and effort on our part. They simply bank on people being too busy to fight tickets.

Moral of the story, even the ALJ's in this city are dirty and there's no guarantee they'll reverse your ticket even if you're right, but definitely fight in person.

Handyman needed for a small roofing job

We have been searching for a few weeks to find someone for a small roofing job - to seal around a few stack pipes, and cap one (2 story single family home). We were told that this job should take less than 30 minutes, but because it's the end of roofing season, everyone is busy and only taking big ticket jobs. The last guy to come out said to make it worth his time, it would be $600-700. Everyblock has given folks some great advice, so I thought I would give it a shot! Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

They were prompt and professional and worked out well.

Need to find a new home for my 2 cats

Hello,
So I need to find a new, loving home for my 2 cats. I have a newborn, a 3 yr old & just went back to work, keeping up with my fur babies is getting to be too much for me.

Monkey is a black, long haired boy. He's a sweetheart, loves to be loved. He is very lazy (but what cat isnt) and extremely friendly.
Buttons is a black/white short hair girl. She's also friendly and like to play.

I adopted them as kittens 5 yrs ago and would like to keep them together if possible.

Please email me if you're interested.

Donation pick-up?

Hi there, it seems that organizations that used to pick up at my house (near Kimball/Wrightwood) no longer do so. Full disclosure: I'm too lazy to drop off and like the tax write-off perk that comes with donation, so I am missing these pick-ups (VVA/Amvets/Purple Heart/Cancer Federation have all responded that they no longer pick up in my neighborhood). We use this group for our 2 bed 2 bath and 3 shedding dogs. Always get 2 ladies and we always have had excellent communication with the owner. He has come by a few times to check on their work. Very nice. Average price. Far above average cleaning.

Red Ford Focus stolen at around 5pm, Tuesday at Logan and California.

My car was stolen this afternoon. I ran out of gas while making a left turn onto California from Logan. Two kind people helped stop traffic and push me to the north side of California, across the street from the Starbucks. It was a large black man and a small black woman who helped me push the car. They checked that I had help and left me. I immediately started walking south to the gas station on Fullerton and California....

My car was stolen this afternoon. I ran out of gas while making a left turn onto California from Logan. Two kind people helped stop traffic and push me to the north side of California, across the street from the Starbucks. It was a large black man and a small black woman who helped me push the car. They checked that I had help and left me. I immediately started walking south to the gas station on Fullerton and California. I was gone about ten minutes. When I returned it was gone, though a hubcap was still on the sidewalk.

The person I talked to at the police station said that it is likely that someone perhaps with a tow truck saw it was broken down and took it. It would have been very hard to get gas for it and steal it in the time I was gone. I do have all the keys.

If anyone was in the area at the time or saw anything suspicious, please let me know. Thank you so much.

  • I have to admit..I really liked this thread...it started out for me 'OH NO!!!!' and now it is a good ending and a great story...

  • My friends have agreed that this would make a really corny plot for a badly written sitcom. Glad my good fortune and good neighbors also happens to be so entertaining!

I had to explain it to the police officers today, to cancel my police report. They only laughed at me a little.

Your Pet's Wellness Pet Healthcare business

I can't recommend this business and Dr. Jessica Miller enough for their warm, patient, empathetic and personal attention when we had to make a hard and very, very sad decision for our beloved cat, Emma. She was kind, accommodating, efficient, respectful, gentle and lovely as she helped us say goodbye to our girl.

The neighborhood does need more studios and one bedroom apartments. It is still easy (now) to find an affordable place to live if you have two people but if it is just you, the options are really limited. Not sure if the new construction is going to address that or if their prices will be really high for these one bedrooms but there are very few one bedrooms in this neighborhood in general.

While I think it makes sense that the mega mall needs to go, I am also a renter and wonder how it will affect me once we start getting more retail, which the neighborhood needs unless you shop just at thrift stores or Shop and Save type of places. I also am pretty far from the Mega Mall though as well, so I don't think it would even affect me all that soon. Plus, my friend works at a big architecture firm that was asked to do a mock up for it possibly, and she said it would take 4-5 years anyway to be open for business for such a big project, especially if they have to build a parking deck.

  • Thanks for the correction, Anton Cermak. Whatever it is, it looks like phoney and cheap closeup.

Kelly B, Orbit Rooms' Mac and Cheese is the best in the city. I usually get it with blackened chicken, and add a little Sriracha. It's big enough for two people to share.

GQ Magazine Gave a Shout Out to Logan Square Drinking Establishments

Watch out for well-dressed drunkards swarming to the neighborhood. GQ Magazine named Chicago America's Best Drinking City for 2014. Probably nothing you didn't already know but it's nice to see more national recognition for our lovely neighborhood:

Custom Blue Bike stolen in Logan Square

Please be on the lookout for this bike, second one stolen in 2 years. Already posted in the Stolen Bike Registry and filed a police report. More info about the bike here: http://chicago.stolenbike.org/node/195867

  • Thanks! @J.Smith I have been going down the list on the chain link site. Thanks for your support and message!

  • I'm sorry to hear that your bicycle was stolen! I see that the bike was locked with a cable and padlock. I highly suggest getting a high-quality U-lock for your next bike. Those seem to deter thieves more.
