Are public masks against the law?

I've been spending a lot of time in the restaurants, bars in the new 53rd street Hyatt Hotel complex. Lots of nice, new folks from all over.

There was a nice group of soccer fans from Ghana Africa, who were disappointed their team lost to the USA, but everyone was a good sport.

Them I saw something that kind of unnerved me.

A driver in a packed car was in a full Islamic garb with a very distinct face mask disguise. The person was probably female, but it could just as well have been a smaller man in disguise.

I know the nation of France has banned this type of dress and England has rules that official IDs like Drivers Licenses have to include uncovered faces.

My question is. What are Chicago laws regarding going around in public in masks? I doubt banks allow this. What about just driving a car. Police and witnesses can't describe a suspect in an accident or in a crime.

  • Are you opposing only 'the worst Islamic extremists' or also any that wear a head covering? Or are they one and the same to you?

  • sean els Returned to Hyde Park Kenwood

Mike, there are some degrees of Islam and with women's dress. A scarf is a first step, kind of like wearing a Catholic cross. Then there are masks and then the full burka. I am against the masks and full burka and support the secular Republic of Turkey and France laws banning the burka.

Also, it isn't just a question of "laws" - it's also custom and culture, supporting good things, opposing bars things like people being mean to old people.

Police Activity between 51st and 55th?

Around 6:10pm tonight, I was on a southbound Metra train, stopped at 47th. The conductor announced that we were to remain in the station indefinitely and that all trains were halted, due to what he said was police activity between 51st and 55th Streets. I got off the train and walked from 47th to 53rd and didn't see anything out of the ordinary around the 51st or 53rd Street Metra stations. Anyone have any idea what was going on?

  • There was a robbery at about 54th and Hyde Park and I believe the UCPD chased suspects westbound--I think they were caught a few blocks west of the tracks.

Robbery 5400 S. Hyde Park (Public Way) 10/27/14 5:44 PM 10/27/14 5:40 PM Three suspects used force to take book bag from a victim walking on the sidewalk off campus / UCPD officers arrested a suspect and recovered the victim's property Arrest D00940

  • Ah, thank you! I had been look at the news to see what happened, but could never find anything.

Hyde Park Thank State Representative Curry for Limiting Your Transportation Options

Several weeks ago the Illinois House of Representatives voted on HB 4075. The bill was bought and paid for by the taxi and commercial auto insurance industry and would place draconian regulations on the ridesharing industry Areas such as Hyde Park, which is designated by the City of Chicago, as an underserved community by the taxi industry, has residents who regularly use ridesharing companies Uber,Lyft, and Sidecar for critical transportation needs. Although her constituents use these services State Rep Barbara Curry supported the bill that would limit ridesharing in Chicago while protecting the taxi industry.

For rent: Filth

Went there and walked in, the place was filthy, outdated, there was grease and dust on every air vent cover. The kitchen was a mess. Old food in between vintage cabinets and appliances. Pots and pans, full of crust and yuck, were on display everywhere. The bathroom was just as bad, moldy and crusty.

Still, this could all be fixed, I just need to talk to the landlord...I am sure they could be reasonable enough to help offset the cleaning costs and maybe update the place a little bit while I settle in to a long-term lease...because that would be the right way to do things.

Except, the little UofC turd wanted me to also buy the feces furniture ($670!) he had been suckered into buying from the last guy. At least, that's his story. He wouldn't let me talk to the landlord about anything (lease, deposit, etc) until I bought the scat. Plus, he wanted to leave his personal stuff there for a month or two!

I imagined the landlord as someone who is either too old, too naive or too apathetic to realize what they are letting go on. If I owned a condo in that building, on that floor, I would raise a bigger stink than what is coming out of there already.

But, this guy is just a student. So long-time residents (who aren't property owners) will just have to go with the flow. The flow of being pushed out of the neighborhood, or into less than favorable conditions.

"Unacceptable!" -Brandon Marshall

As a former property manager of condo associations the fault is with the Board of Directors. Since it seems the board has changed companies, the companies they've hired aren't fulfilling their role. Or, the board may not know how to manage the management company. Mistakes are ether micro-managing or no involvement. If a board does not follow through on their rules, by holding appropriate meetings and fining owners for not following the rules, a building suffers. Associations also must have reasonable rules, if move in fees or deposits are too high, people will try to bypass them.

In a condo it's not the management companies job to manage the rentals unless they're getting a fee for it. The management company will or should advise the owner of any rule violations, this doesn't matter if it is an owner occupied unit or tenant occupied. There have been times when I've had owners behave worse than tenants. If a tenant is a problem, I always went after the owner to get it right.

In any event, the board dictates the duties and responsibilities of the management company, bad/lazy boards don't care, some management companies will stay on and do the minimum, others will resign because they don't have the authority and cooperation from the board that they need to do the job well.

  • Is this thread about the toaster buildings in the middle of 55th, Dorchester, etc.? I certainly hope this owner/renter are anomalies given the folks I know who live there.,

  • St. Thomas the Apostle Elementary School reviewed by a parent

I am a parent of a middle school child at STA. This is a fantastic school, especially moving into the middle school years. The principal is incredibly involved, approachable, and dedicated. The class size is small and the teachers know each child very intimately. The workload in middle school is high, but the idea is to prepare kids for high school. The teachers are passionate and professional. It would be nice if there was a bit more diversity (my child is not black), but this seems to be progressively improving and my child has never felt anything but completely welcome. This is a school that is good for kids at all levels of academic performance and I have been impressed that the teachers are helping my child reach an individualized potential--as opposed to being a school that enrolls all high-performing kids and then takes credit for their (expected) high standardized test scores--that said, kids here are doing well on standardized tests too. Above all, if you visit STA I think you will find it obvious that the kids here are genuinely happy and glad to be there. Bullying is not tolerated whatsoever. Credit to the principal and teachers this is a very good school

Condo Management Company

Does anyone have a great condo management company they can recommend that serves the Washington Park/HydePark/Bronzeville area?

Thanks!

  • We use The Building Group to manage our cooperative in Hyde Park and are very happy with them. They manage other buildings in Hyde Park including Vista Homes. Jim Stoller is President and very responsive.

  • Kane Property Management: our condo at 54th and Dorchester switched to Kane from Wolin Levin and never looked back. They are terrific, and relatively cheap.

I'm posting because of something very disturbing that has been happening over the last several months, but that took an extremely upsetting turn last night, and I'm curious if anyone else has had a similar experience.

For several months now, there has been a woman, who I assume to be homeless, sitting on the sidewalk outside of the Binny's Express on the corner of 53rd and the Lake Park side street, across from Harper Court. The first several times I walked past her, she asked very nicely if I had any change to spare, I gave her what I had, and kept going. She was very kind and pleasant. However lately, when I pass her I have not had anything to give her and have told her as much. This is when the problems start. She has become increasingly belligerent when I say that I do not have any change to spare. At first when told no, she would just say nothing. That escalated to yelling profanities after me as I continued walking down the street, which is unpleasant, but it is what it is. Yesterday, however, when told that I had nothing to give her, she responded by yelling profanities and saying, "One of these days I'm gonna punch your big a** out."

The profanities are one thing, but threatening physical harm is quite another. I'm unsure of what to do in this situation. I don't know what this woman's story is, but I will say that for the first time in the three years that I have lived in Hyde Park, this incident has made me feel unsafe. I should not have to be threatened, however serious or not this woman may have been, or cursed at as I walk down the street carrying out my own business.

My question is, has anyone else had a similar experience with this woman? Does anyone know her story? What should I do if this happens again? I was unsure if the police (either CPD or UChicago) should be called. Perhaps I am overreacting and being overly sensitive about the whole thing, but it was truly unsettling. Any advice my neighbors can give will be welcome.

Lost Cat, Small and Grey

Hi, our cat ran out the door yesterday night around midnight. She is small and grey and isn't wearing a collar. We live at 53rd and Harper, so it is likely that she is still around that area. If you see her, please e-mail me at jenna.r.christensen@gmail.com.

  • KML

Hi neighbor. I live in your building (same courtyard) and will keep an eye out for this cat. I was out with my dog about 12:45 that night but I didn't see her in the courtyard.

  • Thanks so much, but she has actually been found! One of my neighbors brought her by last night, she had been in the stairwell early that morning and she had kept her in her apartment until she got home from work. But thanks again! I'm going to remove this post now.

  • So glad to hear that she has been found! I live in your building as well and was keeping an eye out each time I came and went yesterday.
