Personal research may benefit community

Would anyone like to sign up for a neighborhood compost collection service? Pick-up and replacement of a provided 5-gallon bucket will go to feed a local worm farm. Vermicomposting. $10/pick-up or price dependent on pick-up requirements. I would like to start providing such a service on bicycle with trailer, would you be interested in this type of service? Programs can be set up to receive compost in return after a certain amount of food collected.

  • St. Thomas the Apostle Elementary School reviewed by a parent

I am a parent of a middle school child at STA. This is a fantastic school, especially moving into the middle school years. The principal is incredibly involved, approachable, and dedicated. The class size is small and the teachers know each child very intimately. The workload in middle school is high, but the idea is to prepare kids for high school. The teachers are passionate and professional. It would be nice if there was a bit more diversity (my child is not black), but this seems to be progressively improving and my child has never felt anything but completely welcome. This is a school that is good for kids at all levels of academic performance and I have been impressed that the teachers are helping my child reach an individualized potential--as opposed to being a school that enrolls all high-performing kids and then takes credit for their (expected) high standardized test scores--that said, kids here are doing well on standardized tests too. Above all, if you visit STA I think you will find it obvious that the kids here are genuinely happy and glad to be there. Bullying is not tolerated whatsoever. Credit to the principal and teachers this is a very good school

Condo Management Company

Does anyone have a great condo management company they can recommend that serves the Washington Park/HydePark/Bronzeville area?

Thanks!

  • We use The Building Group to manage our cooperative in Hyde Park and are very happy with them. They manage other buildings in Hyde Park including Vista Homes. Jim Stoller is President and very responsive.

  • Kane Property Management: our condo at 54th and Dorchester switched to Kane from Wolin Levin and never looked back. They are terrific, and relatively cheap.

I'm posting because of something very disturbing that has been happening over the last several months, but that took an extremely upsetting turn last night, and I'm curious if anyone else has had a similar experience.

For several months now, there has been a woman, who I assume to be homeless, sitting on the sidewalk outside of the Binny's Express on the corner of 53rd and the Lake Park side street, across from Harper Court. The first several times I walked past her, she asked very nicely if I had any change to spare, I gave her what I had, and kept going. She was very kind and pleasant. However lately, when I pass her I have not had anything to give her and have told her as much. This is when the problems start. She has become increasingly belligerent when I say that I do not have any change to spare. At first when told no, she would just say nothing. That escalated to yelling profanities after me as I continued walking down the street, which is unpleasant, but it is what it is. Yesterday, however, when told that I had nothing to give her, she responded by yelling profanities and saying, "One of these days I'm gonna punch your big a** out."

The profanities are one thing, but threatening physical harm is quite another. I'm unsure of what to do in this situation. I don't know what this woman's story is, but I will say that for the first time in the three years that I have lived in Hyde Park, this incident has made me feel unsafe. I should not have to be threatened, however serious or not this woman may have been, or cursed at as I walk down the street carrying out my own business.

My question is, has anyone else had a similar experience with this woman? Does anyone know her story? What should I do if this happens again? I was unsure if the police (either CPD or UChicago) should be called. Perhaps I am overreacting and being overly sensitive about the whole thing, but it was truly unsettling. Any advice my neighbors can give will be welcome.

Lost Cat, Small and Grey

Hi, our cat ran out the door yesterday night around midnight. She is small and grey and isn't wearing a collar. We live at 53rd and Harper, so it is likely that she is still around that area. If you see her, please e-mail me at jenna.r.christensen@gmail.com.

  • KML

Hi neighbor. I live in your building (same courtyard) and will keep an eye out for this cat. I was out with my dog about 12:45 that night but I didn't see her in the courtyard.

  • Thanks so much, but she has actually been found! One of my neighbors brought her by last night, she had been in the stairwell early that morning and she had kept her in her apartment until she got home from work. But thanks again! I'm going to remove this post now.

  • So glad to hear that she has been found! I live in your building as well and was keeping an eye out each time I came and went yesterday.

and Bronzeville's Buckthorn Park led by Ephraim Lee xhle@hotmail.com

On a related note; if anyone has any old toys their pup has lost interest in, consider giving them a second life by donating them to one of the dog parks... also any grocery bags for the bag dispensers would also be greatly appreciated.

  • Dear Todd

thank you for this update. I know there are a number of concerned puparents that are concerned about the pond at 51st Street. Ever since the geese died in the water there, there have been concerns about how safe it is for the dogs.

I also hear that eventually we will get an Olmstead themed dog park in Jackson Park.

    thanks for posting.

    Anne Marie

  • Todd Agosto Analyst/Investigator at Veritatem Cognoscere

Thanks for the heads up and continued support Anne. In the meantime, while we wait to see such plans materialize or fall apart, we should all so what we can to connect puparents through the development, maintenance and/or use of dog parks on the southside.

She entered a car with Indiana tags and sat for about 10 minutes before it took off with her in it. She looked like a hooker and several minutes later I saw another young black woman (20s) dressed the same way. Shorts cut up to the crotch, black high platform heels walking around those guys who play chess in Harold Washington Park. I have concerns about this activity in East Hyde Park. Has anyone else seen this kind of activity in the area?

These days, how can you tell the pros from the ho's?

  • Majurej, with all due respect, I do beleive you're concerned. I won't say you're over-reacting, but if this wasn't speculation, I'm confident that you would have pointed out the particulars by now. I wouldn't worry about it, until you're sure. At this point it's simply conjecture. Your vigilance is appreciated.
