Ald. Pawar running again

http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20140414/north-center/ald-pawar-kicks-off-re-election-bid-says-maybe-future-mayoral-run

This is great news...I hate the term limit part though. Does anyone know if the committeeman is organizing for the campaign or how to get involved?

Well I love where our TIF money has been spent. He's not perfect but def one of the best aldermen in city.

The fact that he's all about neighborhood schools makes him better than the mayor. Unfortunately this office is just a stepping stone.

Commercial fishing on lakefront around Belmont Harbor?

Last week I noticed a weird foam about 15 ft out on the water in an extensive ring. I asked a scientist friend who knows about such things. He said that the local fisherman have taken to the disgraceful practice of using fire extinguishers to push out 20 or more lines to catch fish and the foam is a result of the froth from the extinguishers.
Today I saw men dragging big carts of items such as extinguishers, various multi fishing lines, many large buckets and other equipment. etc over to the lakefront. Is this commercial fishing? What are they doing with the fish they catch? Are Lake Michigan fish being sold to local restaurants?

  • d3 NOH

they don't seem to be very strict on fishing regulations off shore here? I see people snagging every morning just driving along LSD. That's illegal, no?

The Fire extinguishers have been emptied and refilled with compressed air, so there is no contamination from "Power Lining" that I can tell. Here is how it works: "No support poles needed for a power line. Get yourself a fire extinguisher, empty it and then have it filled with compressed air at a Fire Extinguisher supply. Most extinguishers have a hose of some type and you have to adapt that to a piece of pipe, maybe 1 1/2 inch diameter. Your weight needs to slide in the pipe easily. Attach a three ft. piece of chalk cord to the weight and the rubber band to the chalk line. Attach the end of the rubber band to a open face fishing pole/reel. Most guys use only the bottom half of the rod. Make sure your bail is open. Aim pipe out over the lake and hit the fire extinguisher handle quickly. Weight is shot out and takes rubber band and line with it. Reel in line, rubber stretches. Disconnect line from fishing rod and add leader with six droppers that you bait with crawlers, etc. A length of flyline is added to the end of the leader. Let the rubber band pull the hooks and flyline back out. I attach a large bobber near the last hook. Clip end of flyline to a bell and sit back waiting for the ring/ring. Pull in fish hand over hand, rebait and repeat process. Flyline is best because it won't tangle when you handline it in. Some guys use mono but they need a large reel of some type to keep it from tangling. Henry's Bait should be able to set you up with weight, leaders and flyline. Your on your own for a fire extinguisher. 5 or 10 lbers work good." As to whether or not it would be considered "commercial" you would need to talk to the City of Chicago, or The State of Illinois.

Hi there. I have a few pieces of furniture to get rid of pronto - seriously, if you can come pick them up, you can have them for FREE. That's right, FREE. Good condition sofas - we just need to make room for a baby, so goodbye spare room, hello nursery. Non-smoking, but cat home. Must pick up.

The first is a black, IKEA ektorp sofabed - it's a few years old, but in really good shape - we've used in a spare room for the occasional out-of-towners. IKEA no longer carries the sofa, but I've found replacement covers online elsewhere, if black isn't your thing. The cover is easily removed to be washed. There are some minor nicks where the cat got a hold of it, along the back. This guy is heavy. And we can throw is the squishy, foam mattress topper we use with it to make it more comfortable.

The second is a set of dark brown, corduroy-ish apartment sized sofa/loveseat and oversized arm chair. Two years old - the sofa is in good shape - some minor wear, we would keep, but we came into a different living room set. The chair, on the other hand, has a rip along the back where the pillow meets the frame - I believe it's easily repaired - I'm just lazy - so we've just thrown a blanket over it. And woah - get this, it comes with THREE pillows.

I can't get both pictures to load, so let me know if I can send one to you or if you have other questions.

Ants!

It is spring and the ants have begun to march. In our experience last year, the little roundish traps didn't do enough. So, I think we need an exterminator. I'm okay with them doing what they need to do outside the house. But, I'm worried about the interior. I don't want the chemicals in the house and substances like vinegar don't seem to work well enough. Will hiring an exterminator just for the outside be sufficient? Any exterminator recommendations? Any ant removal recommendations?

Thanks

  • Steve Vance Thrice Decades on Melrose St.

Cinnamon eh? I'm giving this a shot in the next week as I get them from tiny crevices and cracks that sometimes sitting the Terro traps by is near impossible.

  • Patricia 25 Year Lakeview Resident

Important distinction: Carpenter ants--the big black ants--are like termites and very destructive. For them, I'd go with a professional exterminator. The little ants are an icky nuisance and can be dealt with by ant traps or cinnamon. Nievka, I love your description of a "tiny cinnamon wall."

Will a quartz countertop remnant sell?

I know this is a weird question. We're replacing a countertop and are going to have leftover quartz. I don't want to take delivery of it if I can't get rid of it. Do you think this is something people would buy? Is there a want-ads listing service for building materials other than the obvious, like craigslist?

  • Could you please confirmd the dimensions of the remnant that you have and the price? I too, would be interested! THX.

  • L

I don't know. I don't have it and won't take delivery of it unless I have a home for it. It is a slab that has two back splashes cut from it. As soon as I have more info, I'll post or PM you. Thanks.

Suspicious activity at Belle Plaine and Lincoln and in North Center Town Square

Has anyone else noticed loitering and some generally odd happenings in this area. I see a car parked with people getting in and out and people loitering near the buildings. My guess is that there might be some drug sales going on. I'll be contacting the Alderman's office but was wondering if anyone else has notified them.

  • My girls took dance in that large building before the owner sold it. She was constantly calling the police. The convenience store on the corner is the problem. I have heard they sell individual cigarettes to teens and that there was unsavory business going on in the condemned apartments above it at times. The police know. Not sure why nothing has ever been done about it.

  • tbf

I talked to the Alderman's office yesterday. This is a known issue with that block of buildings that house the empty laundry mat and the currency exchange. He said that they would let the beat Captain know that the activity is picking up and that neighbors should call the police anytime we see something odd.

Say no to Cubs parking at Irving and Rockwell

In the latest newsletter for our ward, it was announced that the Cubs will be soon turning our neighborhood into their parking lot. This doesn't require ward approval. Sounds like a deal has been made between the Cubs and Basic wire, a factory with a gigantic lot by the river.
I can only imagine what wonders this will do for traffic on Irving, Western and all the side streets. I'm not just talking car traffic, some of the fans aren't...

I can only imagine what wonders this will do for traffic on Irving, Western and all the side streets. I'm not just talking car traffic, some of the fans aren't all too respectful. Ready to have your area turn into Wrigleyville? Finally, what positive does our community get from this? What traffic studies were done? I know this is a free market but let's make sure we let Basic Cable and Cubs ownership hear are voices.

I was walking and enjoying the weather yesterday, and while I was coming back from the Pet Supplies Store on Lincoln, I ran into a cute little shop with a cartoon broccoli illustration outside, begging me to check it out - the signs boasted smoothies, produce, etc., and I have never seen it before. So inside I went, and the owner gave me the lowdown on the shop. She obtains her produce from local farms, and the idea is that you can pick stuff out, like certain veggies, and they make them to go - basically, making eating well more convenient for the customer. I tried a peach smoothie, which is all the basics - yogurt, honey, and fruit. No additives!

While reading up on this to post on my food-enthusiast blog (http://vixteroni.wordpress.com), I came across this article from a while back:

http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20130905/north-center/veg-head-battles-junk-food-with-customized-snack-packs

If you are around Lincoln and Irving Park, be sure to check this out - I think there is a lot of potential there.

  • Jen Baron JBaron

Wow! Good to know! Had no idea about this place and I will be sure to check it out! We need more places like this! And we need to support them! So keep spreading the word! Very cool!

  • I don't understand why Veg Head purposely tries to alienate a good portion of potential customers by stating "This is an anti-Ayn Rand Establishment". I am not a serious Randite, but I have read some of her books and found them thought provoking. To me, this signage just seems like bad business. It is the reason I have never been in Veg Head despite living around the corner (and loving guac).

Please report problems about new Cubs lot

The new Cubs parking lot at Rockwell and Irving is sure to cause issues for neighbors. Please be sure to contact the Cubs 773-404-4175 or Alderman Pawar (773) 868-4747 or
info@chicago47.org with all concerns. This was thrust upon the neighborhood without input from the residents in a surprise move. The meeting with the Cubs, alderman and residents was 4 days before the first weekend game and there are still open questions and concerns.

  • Hi every blockers, would anybody like to comment about the parking lot for a college news story i am doing. I would really appreciate it. Please contact me at ricardo.guzman@loop.colum.edu

  • Any nearby residents willing to comment on the parking lot, please contact me at ricardo.guzman@loop.colum.edu. I would really appreciate it. It is for a college homework assignment.

I was wondering why my electric bills seemed kinda high. Not crazy high, but more than they should be. I figured it must have something to do with that offer I signed up for to have my energy delivered by Energy Plus. I was a sucker for their airline miles offer. What was going on was that every month their charge went up by mere pennies, but last month the electric bill was about $30 more than it should be. This winter we all saw higher bills of course because of the brutal winter. If you are using Energy Plus, call ComEd and cancel it. If you are considering signing up, read the fine print and cancel as soon as you can after getting the miles....or better yet, learn from my mistake and steer clear and warn your friends.

  • Had the same thing happen to me with Viridian. I saved quite a bit in supply charges over the first couple of years and then without notice, the supply rates nearly tripled (from 0.0499 to 0.1299 per kWh). Guess that's what I get for being on their variable plan.

  • d3 NOH

Thank you for pointing this out. For the 12 months after sign-up, it was a good deal, then you're right they just nudged the price up and up and up. Our electric bill is double what it should be now. Canceled and signed up somewhere else but it will take 2 months. A lesson here is to put an item in your calendar to check and pick a diff plan before the 12 month ending.

Bikes stolen

Sadly, we went into our garage Friday morning and discovered both doors wide open and our bikes gone. We don't know if our garage mates left the door open, the door is faulty or if we left the door to our backyard unlocked, but however it happened, there is someone in the area stealing. So make sure that you watch for the garage door to go all the way to the ground before walking away.

We've filed a report with 311 as well as the stolen bike registry, but I don't have a ton of faith that we will be seeing them again.

  • Thanks Beeb and Mike! We will definitely have to check that out. We have sensor lights now, but clearly that didn't do much!

  • Therese Ten-year resident.

24 hours after our bikes we're stolen in December, they appeared on Craig's List in the same posting. My husband responded as though he were an interested buyer, then called the police, who said they'd send a detective if the thief responded with an address. There was no response and a few hours later the post came down, which leads us to believe the thief knew or had learned our last name. So if your bikes appear on Craig's List, I'd recommend having friends query on your behalf. Good luck.

He was carrying a plastic clipboard (possibly blue plastic) and had a lanyard around his neck.

This reminded me of another post(which I can not find) that described and African American male wearing a blue hoodie, messenger bag, and carrying a clipboard buzzing people.
