Muskie's Closing

Sigh... Another institution bites the dust. Muskie's (corner of Lincoln/George/Lakewood) is closing either this Saturday or next Saturday. They are renters and the owner wants to do something else with the property. The cleaner next door also has to close soon.

Memory care home for dementia - least expensive in the area?

Sorry, to be so direct about a sensitive subject but memory care is way expensive and my family has to budget the money available very closely as there are two people involved. Right now they are paying $7,000.00 a month for two and, while that is a very good price, they are living out of state and, though its a very nice facility, they beg hourly to come back to the Chicago area.. Its impossible to get costs online. Thanks very much for any information.

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

Becky - the going rate for live-in caregivers is $12-16 an hour, or slightly more than the current cost per month for your parents.

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

The least expensive route would be a nursing home covered by Medicare, by they are all pretty awful.

My mom has very advanced alzheimer's and is currently under hospice care. Feel free to contact me if you'd like to chat.

Nightly disturbances in alley south of waveland, north of addison, between hamilton and hoyne.

Hi,

For the past 2 weeks or so, I have been woken up every night by very loud, seemingly deliberate noises (garbage bin shaking, metal screeching, pounding) coming from my alley. At first, they were consistently occurring at 4:30am. The past few nights, I have been hearing them anywhere between 2am and 4:30am.

Normally, these alleys are very quiet. These noises in the wee hours of the morning are easily the loudest during any hour in that area with the exception of maybe garbage and recycling pick up.

I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks!

  • If I hear something out of the ordinary in the alley in the middle of the night, I'm calling 911. If it means I get fined, so be it, I'm not taking any chances with a 6 year old in the house. I'm 99.9% sure that all parents feel the same.

  • George F in Ravenswood displaced New Yorker

Grace nailed it. If you had known what the noises were you would've said so. You don't know, that's why you call 911, because you don't know. Let the police handle it. You're not going to get fined for calling 911, if you fear that there is a potentially dangerous...

These things all occurred during normal weekday hours. It's starting to make me uncomfortable even walking down that corridor, and I've never felt that way before.

Has anyone else noticed a lot of weird going ons over there?

I live ON Halsted because I love urban living and the energy that comes with it. The Referendum: Has the CTA sufficiently justified the $320 million proposed Brown Line Flyover project and its impact on local homes and businesses?

Vote NO to insist the CTA let the community know what they plan before it’s too late to stop them.

The CTA Belmont El ‘flyover’ will waste $320 million++. Save Central Lakeview, a thriving restaurant, shopping, business district, from being ruined by the unnecessary Brown Line ‘flyover.’ Don’t let them waste your money, ruin your neighborhood.

The flyover will swing wide over two blocks of Clark Street, turning a large chunk
of this essential street into an under-El wasteland. Many commercial buildings and homes will be destroyed. Those still standing will be left facing under-El emptiness and an overhead train.

The CTA ‘findings’ are false, their drawings intentionally misleading.
Plans have NOT been finalized; please speak up for Lakeview before it’s too late.

  • Mike - Reading these and your past posts voiced in CTA verbiage, I'm assuming you work for or are somehow closely tied to the CTA. Otherwise, such dedication to defending the CTA’s obvious lies about the “need” for this ruinous flyover is simply bizarre.

What I'm seeing from people who live near it is simply "NIMBY" -- Not In My BackYard. That blocks a whole lot of worthy projects from ever getting done, from homeless shelters to nuclear reactors. If it were getting done a few miles away, where it didn't impact the speaker directly, they'd be all in favor of it.

Day-time Home Burglary and Night-time Garage Thieves

On Sept 11th our home was broken into by criminals and several items were stolen with rooms and walls vandalized in the process. This was done between the hours of 9am and 1:30pm, but most likely around 11am. This is when a neighbor saw a white van parked behind our garage in the alley.

The police are investigating, but in response, we installed some Dropcams around the house and 36 hours later we caught a man in our yard at 3:30am. Below is a link to the video. Watch starting on the upper left side of the screen as he begins in our neighbors yard and make his was to the alley.

I don't ever want to fight like that again but I will if I have to protect my family and home . So like Gio said the noise will surely scare these tresspassers away . The first system is a silent type that only sounds an alarm inside my home , that's how I was able to catch this guy . I decided it's much safer just to scare them away . It was installed by my security company . Works great and also has a timer on the siren . Very professional system .

Chicago Speed Camera Map: watch out for one by Lane Tech High School

Just an fyi, speed cameras in school zones are set if you go over 20 mph. Watch out for one at 2501 W. Addison by Lane Tech High School. The normal speed limit is 30 mph and the cameras run longer than expected (6am - 9pm?) not just during school hours. $100 ticket.

I received a warning there when the signs first went up. In some suburbs I've seen flashing yellow lights on the signs when the 20 mph limit is being enforced. This would help make things less vague. I believe that right now the signs say "on school days when children are present". By the time you see an 18 year old "child ", you probably have already been caught. Might help if they had specific hours, also. If a " child " is on the sidewalk at 6:00pm that shouldn't be a school zone violation. And, is a day in July a school day if summer school may be in session?

  • Rose real estate advisor 10+ year resident of Roscoe Village

Thanks Peter. In fact I did receive a ticket July 3rd at 3:10pm. I discovered that Lane Tech does NOT have summer school and has not for years. I had to provide physical evidence of this fact as the judge whom I contested the ticket in front of required it. I went to the school and got a letter stating this. I learned that warning tickets are only given the first 30 days a speed camera is installed. No second chances with the Addison camera.

Recent Mice Infestation in our Building

Just moved to the North Center this summer in the neighborhood that borders the river near Campbell and Pensacola, I was wondering if any other neighbors have had recent mice issues in their buildings or homes. My management company and veteran building neighbors say it is the first infestation they have seen. Several neighbors have moved out this month some due to the problem. Has anyone had any success with eradicating mice as a renter, if so any advise you can pass along about my rights or steps I can take to get the management company moving on fixing the problem.

The flies usually come when. A mouse dies in the wall. Its very unsettling, usually about 2 dozen flies and many are very slow and lazy from gorging on the mouse corpse. Its really gross and and can be accompanied by a bad smell depending on how close the dead mouse is to your unit. My management co knows and is not taking steps to remove the bodies or eradicate the infestation.

  • Once there is nesting in the walls, it's almost impossible to single handedly stop them. I know there's a tool, RIDDEX PLUS. You plug into the walls and will emit some sound that drives away rodents/pest bugs . Also you can spray peppermint around the house. I do this anyway...

Not trying to bring fleas around. Apparently it's a fix for rodents too. I honestly wish there was a way to have the management company step in. (Found out in my building they are willing to pay for "renovations" from 1 to 2 bedrooms, take out the dining room, and charge 6-700 more on rent. But are completely uninterested in eradicating this rodents issue. Long less gaining another dumpster.) Can't help but feel alone on actually fixing the problem, huh.

Shortly after the initial responses came in I visited Windy City Sweets on Broadway and bought a nice selection of candies for $6.99/lb. I think that's a reasonable price. And I discovered a couple new favorites, which was my intention. And I was happy to support a local store, which I will continue to do as I try some of the other suggestions when my supply runs out.

I actually do prefer chocolates and chewies, but my new interest in hard candies is to help me practice self-discipline. They are less fattening then cookies, pastries, and chocolates, but satisfy the need for something sweet at the end of the meal, and not as conducive to binging.

Addison porch robbery

I called police Friday, about 2:00 p.m.
after witnessing a male, black, with short dread locks, about 20-25 years take a package off a neighbor's porch then walk east on Addison street. He hung out at the bus stop at Addison and Wolcott, let the bus pass by, then crossed the street to take the package. As far as I know he wasn't caught.

  • This has happened to us 3-4x in the year that we've lived in Roscoe Village and a couple of times, it's occurred within minutes of the UPS truck leaving. The truck must be followed.

  • ChiJen, that is exactly what is happening. These thieves track delivery trucks, knowing that they will leave packages in unsecured locations if no one answers the door. I avoid UPS deliveries if at all possible because of this. I've never had UPS do this.

If you are having an item delivered by UPS delivery and suspect you will not be home to receive it, leave alternative instructions when you place your order for an item: "If no response at delivery address, please ring any apartment in bldg (or specify another apartment #)" or "If no response at delivery address, please deliver next door (give exact address)." I believe if you give an address close to yours, they will deliver as requested. At the very least, leave an instruction NOT to leave the delivery in an unsecured location.

Does anyone know of a good property tax resource such as a website to walk me through it or a lawyer.

I have successfully appealed by myself in the past. As a lawyer, now retired (I didn't handle this sort of work for paying clients), I'm somewhat agnostic as to whether having a lawyer prosecute your challenge is worthwhile: I've gone to these politician-sponsored seminars and filed my own there with some favorable results. I think at the assessor's office it makes sense to have a lawyer (who gets paid only if the challenge is successful). After that, at various boards of review, I'm not so certain. The problem is that the tax-assessment system is a big lottery and I believe that the assessors behind the counter throw little bones to the plebs while they give large cuts to the major campaign contributors.

water heater recommendations

The water heater in our 8 unit condo building needs to be replaced. Any recommendations on installers? Tankless?

Thank you in advance!

  • The best improvement I have ever made is getting a tankless hot water heater. I love it and had no problems. Endless hot water on demand, no running out of hot water if you take a bath then shower or have company. Saves on utilities because only heats water on demand.

  • Gas h/w heater from a Wheeling distributor was $400. My handyman was $100. $25 in copper parts. Dont get ripped off.
