Development near Lincoln and Roscoe

There are 5 vacant, contiguous buildings on west side of Lincoln just south of Roscoe...One of the buildings (which was formerly a thrift shop) is undergoing a major construction, rehab...Does anyone know if there is anything in the works there?

  • L

South of Fullerton at the site of the old Children's Hospital, there is going to be a big new redevelopment which will completely change that area and probably take a long time to get finished. I'm assuming the local property owners are getting ready to attract new or different tennants as a result.

  • L

One more thing, when the hospital closed it meant that lots of people eating and drinking were no longer in the neighborhood everyday. Businesses were forced to closed due to lack of customers as a result.

More arson?

Walking my dogs on Berenice just east of Lincoln-- a recycling dumpster in the alley next to 1853 W. Berenice is badly burned. I don't know if this is related to the rash of fires over the past few months in Lakeview. Anybody know any details?

  • I live in the building, and woke up around 3:30 a.m. to fireworks in the alley (both sounds and what looked like sparks). Once I woke up enough to get to the window, I could already see a large glowing blaze from the dumpster (not direct line of sight but...

I live in the building, and woke up around 3:30 a.m. to fireworks in the alley (both sounds and what looked like sparks). Once I woke up enough to get to the window, I could already see a large glowing blaze from the dumpster (not direct line of sight but the huge orange glow). I phoned the fire dept. who arrived quickly and extinguished the blaze. When I asked if it was intentional and mentioned hearing fireworks, the firefighter I spoke with suggested that it could have been someone carelessly disposing of a cigarette hours previously, with the noises coming from the plastic and cans inside the recycle bin. However today, when Comcast was replacing the burned internet cables, I found multiple bottle rocket pieces. At least 3 or 4 had been set, possibly more.

I am new to the neighborhood as of a month ago, but would be interested in knowing details of the other fires you mentioned. It is very lucky that I was home and woke up in time to call the Fire Department - and exceptionally lucky that our building is brick. The firemen said it would have been very bad if the building wasn't brick.

  • Thanks Lisa! Frightening there are so many. It does fit that timing!

Deciphering gang graffiti

On my morning walk I noticed a lot of stickers around Belmont Harbor containing an X and the letters S H I T in each of the four quadrants. Some were more elaborate and some were very simple. Most seem to be located near other graffiti. In one case, the sticker contained the dates Oct. 23, Oct. 24, Oct. 25 and Oct. 26. Anyone have any insights? (And yes, I reported the graffiti to the city.)

There seems to be a URL on some of the stickers, but I'd rather not get my computer infected with a virus. Google didn't turn up anything useful. The photographs were taken in the Roscoe underpass, but I also noticed a lot of the stickers toward the south end of the harbor.

"Neighbor" in Distress

Guy rang our bell around 10 pm, introduced himself as our neighbor, and launched into a story, which boiled down to the fact that he couldn't get into his apartment on Oakley just north of Irving Park. Asked if there was a Home Depot nearby - then asked for a ride (didn't get one). Then asked for a ladder (didn't have one). Then asked if there were any police or firemen on the block (I told him there were, but...

I guess there's a chance this guy was on the up-and-up and having a really bad night, but this rings all kinds of warning bells for me. Anyone else encounter him?

  • It sounds like the same person, minus the winter coat part. Does she have gray hair and is maybe between the ages of 55-65? I've lived in Roscoe Village since 2004, and have consistently seen her walking back from Jewel (or now either Jewel or Mariano's) on Roscoe near Claremont on week days around 9-10 a.m.

She stops and says hello and generally seems very outgoing and friendly.

giving these guys an inch of wanting to help, is what must fuel them to keep trying these pathetic schemes on other people. only way i would consider helping a "neighbor" is if it was actually a neighbor you have seen before and been friendly with. it's pretty surprising so many people in this post are so willing to help scumbag people like this. a woman getting raped or pregnant about to burst is waaay different than these 'neighbors' describing see through down and out situations. SO dammn shady.

like so many of the 'bums' you see begging on the street, who get in their car at the end of the day and drive home.

i'm ALL for help thy neighbor, but don't be a sucker and get played by these dirtbags.

it's not surprising these people prey on north center though. people in harder neighborhoods aren't falling for this stuff. my buddy takes an eastbound bus to work in north center and he says that as you get closer, all the hs kids are afraid to go to the back of the bus and be around the other kids. thats messed up. its like a little pocket of suburbia in the city. i guess that's another conversation sorta, but not really.

Anyone know what happened to Tara (Michael Anthony/Civello Salon on Belmont)?

    b. seeing her regularly - I see her every three weeks rain, snow, sleet, hail, sickness, health, marriage, death

    c. most importantly, tipping well - I tip her 25% every time.

I am not friends with my stylist. I am not going to the salon to forge a friendship. We have nothing in common. She's a lovely woman who is fantastic at being a stylist and that's why I see her. I am kind to her. I am respectful of her time. I refer my friends and family to her regularly. I simply don't understand how her last name would be of any importance to me, especially since it's not publicly posted anywhere.

A Lakeview woman was beaten in an armed robbery early Wednesday morning by a man whose jacket retails for over $1,000.

Police and a fire department ambulance met the victim near the crime scene at Lakewood and Henderson shortly after 3AM.

She told them that the offender took her purse, which contained a cell phone and other items, before fleeing southbound on Sheffield toward Belmont.

The robber is described as a black man, 5'9" tall, and 150 pounds. He wore a distinctive red Pelle Pelle brand letterman jacket with white lettering and "sequins" on the back.

Other officers and even the ambulance driver reported that they saw the offender minutes before the robbery call came in—once at the Subway restaurant near Belmont and Clark and again walking eastbound on Buckingham Place near Halsted.

Unfortunately, officers were unable to locate the man after the robbery was reported.

The incident is recorded as an armed robbery in CPD case HX468088.

Gang Sign Removal & Gangway fence

Thank you to whoever removed the gang graffiti symbol next to the Alderman's office. Someone contacted me last week about it's exact location and the next day it was gone. I also noticed a wooden fence had been installed in the gangway/alleyway I was mugged from on Belmont & Sheffield behind Einsteins. That alleyway gave the criminals who hang out on the corner easy access to rob people and flee. I'm glad to see our messages are making a difference & improving the neighborhood.

Let's talk about the Halloween Parade!

The annual Halloween parade is coming soon and I just wanted to talk about it.
I look forward to it every October.
What does everyone think of it?

I'll start:

Has a good neighborhood vibe. Doesn't "stress" our neighborhood like Pride Parade.

CONS: Hard to know when the parade has started and ended. So it could use a little more structure. There are hardly any floats, just people walking....

CONS: Hard to know when the parade has started and ended. So it could use a little more structure. There are hardly any floats, just people walking. I can't figure out if the people walking are in the parade or just spectators walking behind.

Here's the information that I found for 2014:
http://www.northalsted.com/pages/northalsted_halloween_parade_2014/157.php

FYI: I'm have no ties to the parade other than it's about a block from where I live.

  • I've always watched from Aldine/Roscoe. So, I thought it's always started at Belmont and ended somewhere north of Roscoe.

  • Have you heard about this?
The Halsted parade organizers are calling this year's theme "FreakShow"
Yep, they're advertising that they'll have unique drink specials, people dressed in provocative and scary outfits, and other "curiosities".
Wow, sounds like quite an evening is in store.
    Yep.Yep.
Yea, actually, the regulars who frequent Halsted are calling it by another name :
    "a typical evening"

Stolen packages from Ashland Ave , just north of Grace St

I had three packages that were delivered in the vestibule of my apartment (locked door with large clear glass panel). Some time yesterday in the afternoon and early evening, they were taken from behind the locked door. I'm guessing that someone was really smart about opening up a locked door that doesn't have a bolt lock and really wanted some ladies clothing. :(

Advice on Sealing Split-Faced Block

Hi neighbors - For those who live in a condo with split-faced block, any advice or lessons you can share on having it treated to protect against moisture? I'm on the board for a 6-unit condo with split-faced block on two sides of the building. We last had it treated in 2010, and I'm calling some contractors for quotes to get it done again in the spring. That said, I wanted to do a little research beforehand. Any information you can share on local contractors, types of sealing products, or things to ask about or watch out for would be much appreciated!

Though the blocks show some discoloration at one of the corners, I have never had it sealed and see no reason to do so. When I built it out, I had 3 mil. vapor barrier and thermax insulation placed in the firred-out void between the block and the interior drywall, which has prevented any seepage. I think sealing generally is a scam, although I understand that the block industry may have cheapened their product years ago because of all the demand.

Or roxul. or closed cell foam. if you would have used fiberglass, though... your cavity could be lined with moldy insulation by now.

another issue that's just as likely to be cause problems is water leaking in to wall via the parapet wall. I have seen new construction condo where this was the issue more so than the split-face block itself.

They gave me a dirty look, and as I walked away they went into another room. I was worried about this, next week, tires slashed. Coincidence? I think not. I also think they don't need patrols. I don't want to see my favorite neighborhood turn into a cop hangout where EVERYONE is watched, i mean, don't you hate it when someone is watching over your shoulder when reading a book, or when someone won't stop asking questions when you're trying to watch a movie? I think this won't happen again, these punks wouldn't hit the same place twice. Although it does tick me off that my tires were slashed. Oh well.

  • I believe that this attack was not a conspiracy because there where also tags that said DW everywhere and eagles #2 I'm not sure what this means but it doesn't make any sense maybe everyone was angry with there neighbor or there is a slashing tire group that doesn't like tires for some reason

New Streetlights

Just installed on Greenview. I think they chose a fixture that allows too much light and glare to be undirected and so spills horizontal (Everyone's windows and eyes). I will place a box of seed pods on my parkway garden at 1231 W. Addison, so help yourself to a few seeds. The large seed pods are for the common milkweed that gets about 3 feet tall and has fragrant pink flowers, while the small dark pods are from butterfly weed, another type of milkweed that has orange flowers and gets about 2 feet tall.
Conservationists are calling for a nationwide campaign to save the monarch--you can be a part of this effort. It's a great project for kids, too. Read more at http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-monarch-butterfly-herbicide-kennedy-perspec-102-20141021-story.html

Fictionista: Milkweeds are annual plants that self-sow--I'm sure you've seen the pods and the little round seeds with "parachutes" attached blowing in the wind, like a larger version of dandelion seeds. I think you could hang on to the seeds and plant them in the spring (maybe in pots so they're a good size before planting outdoors) or, since naturally they'd fall to the ground now, you could plant them now.
