Gang banger-north center-Larchmont

Gang banger guy -baggy pants hanging off and a black hoodie and he lives on the block of Larchmont! Lots of activity in the alley behind Larchmont extremely suspicious

  • You can try 911/caps meeting. You could also try walking into your police district and see if anyone is in the office from Tact or Gangs. Ask to speak to an officer. Give the Tact guy a good description and maybe offer your phone number up. Even ask for a cops number, you could call or text him/her when the guy is out.

@George1: Be persistent. If the police don't come out, call again. If they still don't come out, call 911 again and ask for a supervisor.

Peoples Gas, what's going on?

For the third time this year, Peoples Gas has been working on the 3600 block of North Ashland Avenue. Just one month after the street had been smoothly repaved they came back and started ripping it apart all over again. Now we have five metal plates that rattle the homes along the way and the noise doesn't allow for a good night sleep. They have extended the "No Parking" ban all along the block for yet another week but nobody shows up to work even on sunny days. I am afraid the constant shaking is going to take a toll on the homes in the area. Does anybody know how to go about reporting this?

  • Herecomestheman Character assassin.

Peoples infrastructure is the same as most in this country. Water mains, sewers and bridges are all crumbling and in need of updating. There are a lot of things that should have been replaced 50 years ago.

  • C'mon it's Peoples and the City of Chicago, two of the most inept and inefficient entities on earth, and you want sense, efficiency and coordination?

Deciphering gang graffiti

On my morning walk I noticed a lot of stickers around Belmont Harbor containing an X and the letters S H I T in each of the four quadrants. Some were more elaborate and some were very simple. Most seem to be located near other graffiti. In one case, the sticker contained the dates Oct. 23, Oct. 24, Oct. 25 and Oct. 26. Anyone have any insights? There seems to be a URL on some of the stickers, but I'd rather not get my computer infected with a virus. Google didn't turn up anything useful. The photographs were taken in the Roscoe underpass, but I also noticed a lot of the stickers toward the south end of the harbor.

I guess I don't understand Divvy. For this to be practical, there would need to be a Divvy station every couple of blocks

  • Tina K 10 years in Lincoln Square

The closest divvy station was sometimes full in the morning and close to empty in the evening, so I'd allow extra time in case you need to use a divvy station that was further away.

Advice on Sealing Split-Faced Block

Hi neighbors - For those who live in a condo with split-faced block, any advice or lessons you can share on having it treated to protect against moisture? I'm on the board for a 6-unit condo with split-faced block on two sides of the building. We last had it treated in 2010, and I'm calling some contractors for quotes to get it done again in the spring. That said, I wanted to do a little research beforehand. Any information you can share on local contractors, types of sealing products, or things to ask about or watch out for would be much appreciated!

many times though the types of sealant products that penetrate were designed to be put on to block that hasn't already been coated with something else. your choice now might be to continue on the path of painting it again if that's what was done previously. Or better, you could use elastomeric paint and have it create a complete water-proof seal that lasts longer, they sell these coatings at many paint shops including benjamin moore, and Behr has a product for it at HD as well. (SW has to special order their elastomeric last I checked and their people weren't very knowledgeable about the product in the stores I've talked to, they were recommending just regular masonry paint instead)

Flat Tires Bell/Addison

Heads Up: woke up to two flat tires on the passenger side. As I was walking down the block I spotted another car with the same problem. Unlikely that it's a coincidence.

  • It happened on west Sheridan east of Broadway. Saw a couple of cars

  • There were more than 60 cars that had their tires slashed by some punk! Please be on the lookout for creepy people in our neighborhood. I'm out walking my dog all the time and at times its late night and I notice creepy people just walking around. Don't be afraid to call the police. We need more patrol in our neighborhood. This little act of pure ignorance and stupidity by someone else has cost me over $700!!

Chicago Speed Camera Map: watch out for one by Lane Tech High School

https://mapsengine.google.com/map/viewer?mid=zDIlbNW6Kzv4.kWRTNheTjAho

Just an fyi, speed cameras in school zones are set if you go over 20 mph. Watch out for one at 2501 W. Addison by Lane Tech High School. The normal speed limit is 30 mph and the cameras run longer than expected (6am - 9pm?) not just during school hours. $100 ticket.

  • I agree, Liz. I think 20 is reasonable, but they need to be more clear about the times. Like others have mentioned. I go 20 whenever I pass there now. I don't want to end up arguing in court that I didn't see any students. That would be hard to prove. I've lived places where the school speed limit is 15, but they always made it clear with additional signage.

  • I just drove on Addison around 10am. Saw the white strobe light. I saw my speed limit. It was 24-25. I didn't see any students on street or sidewalk. This should prevent me getting a ticket as you need to be 6mph and above. But who knows. I still think...

Here's what I found on Chicago website: (How does the camera differentiate pedestrians from children?) Emphasis mine.

School Zones: School days, Monday through Friday

7 a.m. to 4 p.m.: 20 mph speed limit when *children* are present in the *safety zone* and 30 mph when no children are present in the safety zone

    4 p.m. to 7 p.m.: 30 mph speed limit

Woman Attacked at 3300 Block of Sheffield

This morning there were police officers outside my home investigating the attack of a woman which happened at approximately 5:00am in the west alley of the 3300 block of Sheffield (between Roscoe and School). The woman was walking to her car and was attacked in or directly outside her garage. Fortunately someone heard her screams and called 911 and the attacker was caught. The police officer said she is in critical condition at a hospital. I don't know whether the attacker knew the victim or it was a random act of violence.

@sarah (and all 44th ward residents) - Robin Cook is running for Alderman of the 44th Ward and personally, I think he's an excellent candidate and would be a welcome change for the better. He acknowledges there is a crime and police staffing problem here and has pledged to help try to make things better. That alone is a heck of a lot more than the incumbent has done/will do. I find the rest of his platform and his stance on important issues to be good as well. You can check his platform out on his website.

He has a Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/AldRobinCook) and a website (robincook44th.com). I don't work for him or his campaign, but I've been a resident here since 2010 and I know Tunney needs to go, and I think this is the man to help make real changes for us. I saw in my FB feed that he'll be at Argo Tea tonight from 6.30 - 8pm, if you want to meet him. I've met him previously and been very impressed.

A Lakeview woman was beaten in an armed robbery early Wednesday morning by a man whose jacket retails for over $1,000.

Police and a fire department ambulance met the victim near the crime scene at Lakewood and Henderson shortly after 3AM.

She told them that the offender took her purse, which contained a cell phone and other items, before fleeing southbound on Sheffield toward Belmont.

The robber is described as a black man, 5'9" tall, and 150 pounds. He wore a distinctive red Pelle Pelle brand letterman jacket with white lettering and "sequins" on the back.

Other officers and even the ambulance driver reported that they saw the offender minutes before the robbery call came in—once at the Subway restaurant near Belmont and Clark and again walking eastbound on Buckingham Place near Halsted.

Unfortunately, officers were unable to locate the man after the robbery was reported.

The incident is recorded as an armed robbery in CPD case HX468088.

Hi. I live in a coach house behind Addison, between Hamilton and Hoyne. Every night, there are extremely loud noises at any and all hours of the night. They are absolutely not animals. Once in a while, there is a boom that shakes the foundation of the house. After wearing ear plugs with my head next to a large floor fan on high, I was still woken up by tremors.
The neighbors all claim that they don't hear anything, but I don't see how that is a real possibility. One night, after the earth shook me awake, I walked outside at like 4am and started thrashing on the garage next to our house... loudly. I literally took the side of my fist and started pounding this old loose garage with bursts for about a minute. This was a warm night with people s windows open. Nobody stirred. I walked around afterwards for about another min. Nothing. Another night at like 3-4am, I walked out into the basement of the two flat we're attached to with tenants inside, slammed the door behind me, started rummaging through our storage, walked back outside, slamming the door behind me and slammed the fence under their bedroom windows repeatedly. I talked to them the next day and they said they heard nothing.

Now, I am not a light sleeper. I used to live above a bus stop on Ashland and Irving park. I slept like a baby over there. Either this neighborhood has gone rogue or the house is having night terrors.

I've been sleeping at a friends house recently so my blood pressure doesn't start boiling.

This is ruining my life. The police aren't going to do anything (talked to them already). Cameras are too expensive. I have a strong feeling it will be a complete waste of money.

My fiancé can confirm the noises.

Let's talk about the Halloween Parade!

The annual Halloween parade is coming soon and I just wanted to talk about it.
I look forward to it every October.
What does everyone think of it?

I'll start:

PROS: Feels welcoming for all walks of life including young children
Has a good neighborhood vibe. Doesn't "stress" our neighborhood like Pride Parade.

CONS: Hard to know when the parade has started and ended. So it could use a little more structure. There are hardly any floats, just people walking....

Here's the information that I found for 2014:

FYI: I'm have no ties to the parade other than it's about a block from where I live.

  • is that a new route? Why did I think the parade was only from Addison to Grace?

  • I've always watched from Aldine/Roscoe. So, I thought it's always started at Belmont and ended somewhere north of Roscoe.

Martial arts/Self defense

Hi,
Does anyone have any good, affordable recommendations for a place in the area to take martial art or self defense classes? Thank you!!

  • My son (6) has been taking classes at ATA in Ravenswood and I really like it there. It's not too "beefcakey" if you know what I mean, and they also keep running Groupons (There's one right now, look for Go2Karate) so you can try out a bunch of classes for next to nothing ($20 for 10 classes or $30 for 16 classes, uniform included).
