What's going on in Boystown?

I've lived in Boystown for two years now, and in the last few months I feel like the strip of Halsted between Roscoe and Clark has gotten… questionable. In the last week and a half alone:

2. Walking to dentist, 10 am. Large man calls me a f-ing f***** transvestite with my d*** between my legs. (I am a small blonde girl).

3. Walking home with my boyfriend, 8 pm. Man jumps in our face yelling that we're gross, both of us. (I can assure you, we're not).

These things all occurred during normal weekday hours. It's starting to make me uncomfortable even walking down that corridor, and I've never felt that way before.

Has anyone else noticed a lot of weird going ons over there?

nice comment, greg morrow. just lower the standards for city behavior, and voila! what we get is just what we should have expected. no thanks. given the organization you are posting from, i'd think you'd be a little more visionary/hopeful/inspiring than that. wouldn't you?

Referendum about proposed CTA "Flyover" on Nov. 4 Ballot

There will be a referendum about the planned CTA “Flyover” on the Nov. 4 Election Ballot in the #20, 36 & 38 precincts of the 44th ward. Vote NO to protect Central Lakeview!

The Referendum: Has the CTA sufficiently justified the $320 million proposed Brown Line Flyover project and its impact on local homes and businesses?

Vote NO to insist the CTA let the community know what they plan before it’s too late to stop them.

The CTA Belmont El ‘flyover’ will waste $320 million++. Save Central Lakeview, a thriving restaurant, shopping, business district, from being ruined by the unnecessary Brown Line ‘flyover.’ Don’t let them waste your money, ruin your neighborhood.

The flyover will swing wide over two blocks of Clark Street, turning a large chunk
of this essential street into an under-El wasteland. Many commercial buildings and homes will be destroyed. Those still standing will be left facing under-El emptiness and an overhead train.

The CTA ‘findings’ are false, their drawings intentionally misleading.
Plans have NOT been finalized; please speak up for Lakeview before it’s too late.

  • Since you are so convinced the referendum is pointless please stay home on Nov 4th. And don't complain if this project turns out like the parking meter deal or any of the long list of boondoggles coming out of city hall.

  • You'll be glad to know I'm not in one of the three precincts (I'm in the 26th precinct, a few blocks away). The CTA is not directly run out of city hall, there's a pretty distant separation -- the CTA comes under the RTA, which is governed by a mix of city, suburb, and state appointees.

At least slam the right political body.

Garage Break in on Melrose

Garage break in last night on 1500 Block. They entered from the yard side of the garage (!!), by slashing the window screen and opening the window. Seems it must have been more than 1 person as the window is high to just climb through... Police report filed. We don't know if they were interrupted or decidied they didn't like the bikes - was was uncovered and taken off it's hanger, but not taken...

Bus Shelter on Broadway and Sheridan

Does anyone know what happened to the Bus shelter on the corner of Broadway and Sheridan? I drove by it this morning and the glass was shattered.

  • My guess would be a car ran into it. I've seen that happen several times at other bus shelters. Once on Division and Western I was almost hit by a car that took down the whole shelter. Be careful in those things.

  • Someone from the CTA already replaced the glass yesterday but I would also like to know what happened. I wondered if it was from the construction on Sheridan that has been going on.

Chicago Speed Camera Map: watch out for one by Lane Tech High School

https://mapsengine.google.com/map/viewer?mid=zDIlbNW6Kzv4.kWRTNheTjAho

Just an fyi, speed cameras in school zones are set if you go over 20 mph. Watch out for one at 2501 W. Addison by Lane Tech High School. The normal speed limit is 30 mph and the cameras run longer than expected (6am - 9pm?) not just during school hours. $100 ticket.

  • Dang, I didn't know they now took speeding violations from the front?! What are times of the reduced 20mph speed?

  • There's also one just south of Belmont/Lincoln/Ashland between the Petco and Boston Market. i just noticed the sign today. As others have mentioned, it's 20 MPH. I *think the sign said it's enforced during school hours when children are present. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. 20 MPH is SO slow. Combine the school zones with all of the the slow zones because of city parks and you'll be at a crawl on many busy thoroughfares.

Memory care home for dementia - least expensive in the area?

Sorry, to be so direct about a sensitive subject but memory care is way expensive and my family has to budget the money available very closely as there are two people involved. Right now they are paying $7,000.00 a month for two and, while that is a very good price, they are living out of state and, though its a very nice facility, they beg hourly to come back to the Chicago area.. Its impossible to get costs online. Thanks very much for any information.

  • Resident of LP In Lincoln Park since 1980

We just moved my mother- in-law into Sunrise of Lincoln Park, at 2710 N. Clark. It is about between $5000-$6000 per month. I'm not sure what it is for a couple. It is an amazing place with a focus on memory care. It is worth checking out for your parents.
It would be nice to have them close by.

Lost parakeet? Or some sort of bird

I found what appeared to be small parakeet or canary or some sort of domesticated bird at the Northwest corner of Irving and Leavitt this morning. I'm not a bird person, so not sure on the kind, but it was small and greenish/yellow. I moved it out of the street into the flower bed that is right there. Hopefully it'll stay there until found.

  • There were signs about a bird that matched that description around the Marshfield and Waveland intersection recently.

This is not a park, nor is it becoming a park. It's a street that's being shared by cars, pedestrians & bikes. The city will continue to be responsible for street cleaning and snow plowing. Presumably shop owners will continue to be responsible for shoving the "sidewalk" (albeit one that's less clearly defined) in front of their building.

And fire lanes? To the best of my knowledge, we don't have fire lanes on Chicago streets? (It's my understanding that fire lanes are typically on private property, not public streets.) Or are you referring to the yellow curb in front of fire hydrants? No reason why they can't mark the street near the fire hydrant to indicate that parking is prohibited.

Nightly disturbances in alley south of waveland, north of addison, between hamilton and hoyne.

Hi,

For the past 2 weeks or so, I have been woken up every night by very loud, seemingly deliberate noises (garbage bin shaking, metal screeching, pounding) coming from my alley. At first, they were consistently occurring at 4:30am. The past few nights, I have been hearing them anywhere between 2am and 4:30am.

Normally, these alleys are very quiet. These noises in the wee hours of the morning are easily the loudest during any hour in that area with the exception of maybe garbage and recycling pick up.

I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks!

  • If I hear something out of the ordinary in the alley in the middle of the night, I'm calling 911. If it means I get fined, so be it, I'm not taking any chances with a 6 year old in the house. I'm 99.9% sure that all parents feel the same.

  • George F in Ravenswood displaced New Yorker

Grace nailed it. If you had known what the noises were you would've said so. You don't know, that's why you call 911, because you don't know. Let the police handle it. You're not going to get fined for calling 911, if you fear that there is a potentially dangerous...

You're not going to get fined for calling 911, if you fear that there is a potentially dangerous situation outside your house. The people who get arrested for making false 911 calls are the type of people who like to see the lights and sirens coverge on an area, much like the idiots who pull fire alarms for fun.

Day-time Home Burglary and Night-time Garage Thieves

On Sept 11th our home was broken into by criminals and several items were stolen with rooms and walls vandalized in the process. This was done between the hours of 9am and 1:30pm, but most likely around 11am. This is when a neighbor saw a white van parked behind our garage in the alley.

The police are investigating, but in response, we installed some Dropcams around the house and 36 hours later we caught a man in our yard at 3:30am. Below is a link to the video. Watch starting on the upper left side of the screen as he begins in our neighbors yard and make his was to the alley.

I had a similar set up of motion detectors added to the back of my house and next door business after I got into a fist fight with a man I caught in my back yard in June . I don't ever want to fight like that again but I will if I have to protect my family and home . So like Gio said the noise will surely scare these tresspassers away . The first system is a silent type that only sounds an alarm inside my home , that's how I was able to catch this guy . I decided it's much safer just to scare them away . It was installed by my security company . Works great and also has a timer on the siren . Very professional system .
