Chip and Charlie need a family for Christmas

A dear friend of mine died on Thursday and I'm trying to help his family find a home for his beloved cats, Chip (black and white) and Charlie (big orange guy). Chip is around 12 and Charlie is about 5; they adore each other and it would be great if they could go to a new home together. They are both absolute sweethearts who love a good lap to sit in. Please message me if you can help. Thanks.

  • How soon do they need a new home? I would like to learn more about them but we couldn't help until after 1/1.

  • C. McGeary Roscoe Villager

Thanks, all. My friend's sister and I have both posted on Facebook; I definitely won't post on Craigslist. Haven't reached out to any shelters yet in the hope that we can find them a loving family on our own.

R.B.K., I think we can have some flexibility on timing. The boys have a great cat sitter who cared for them while my friend was hospitalized, and she can remain on duty a bit longer. If you email me through my profile, we can chat.

Found white and tan cat

I found a short haired, white and tan cat matching that description yesterday on the 1300 block of Wellington. It was super friendly and followed me home. Clearly someone's pet because he is very well fed. I took him to Urban Vet immediately and there's no chip. I've posted online and put up signs. He's in our living room and sweet as can be.

  • Connected with his family! Happy ending!

Thank you Iwmhess. For taking the lost cat in and taking the time to find where he belongs. Clapping hands for you!

A Lakeview woman was beaten in an armed robbery early Wednesday morning by a man whose jacket retails for over $1,000.

Police and a fire department ambulance met the victim near the crime scene at Lakewood and Henderson shortly after 3AM.

She told them that the offender took her purse, which contained a cell phone and other items, before fleeing southbound on Sheffield toward Belmont.

The robber is described as a black man, 5'9" tall, and 150 pounds. He wore a distinctive red Pelle Pelle brand letterman jacket with white lettering and "sequins" on the back.

Other officers and even the ambulance driver reported that they saw the offender minutes before the robbery call came in—once at the Subway restaurant near Belmont and Clark and again walking eastbound on Buckingham Place near Halsted.

Unfortunately, officers were unable to locate the man after the robbery was reported.

The incident is recorded as an armed robbery in CPD case HX468088.

The no police thing really bothers me. I've been complaining to our alderman. This being an election year, I suggest if you are upset about the crime, or lack of police response, call your alderman. Let them know you will be voting for his contender without a crime plan for his district.

Michael Diversey's Closed?!

Darnit. I noticed the restaurant closed. I'm a bit surprised as it was always pretty busy. Anyone know if something new is going in? I hope so. I don't like the empty spaces on Diversey right now.

Although they are still looking for a storefront within walking distance of the old store, they are inviting people to shop at their new store, now open, at 3325 N Ashland across from Whole Foods.

Shoppers will be made aware of their store at 2705 N. Elston near Target and their store at 1590 N. Clybourn. The Clybourn store is near the Apple Store and the Red Line stop. The block has a reputation for "apple picking," so hold onto your smart-phone.

In the same shopping strip as their Elston store will be a medical marijuana dispensary at 2723 N Elston, next to the mattress shop where they can take a nap. The parking lot is often full. After the pot shop opens, parking may be tight as some people may drive there, park, forget they drove, and walk home. Only kidding, they'll be too stoned to walk.

None of the above will replace our neighborhood store within walking distance of Diversey/Clark/Broadway.

  • G.

    Bob,

Thanks for that information. I did stop by Vitamin Shoppe and found that out. I shop there fairly often but don't think I will as much (Amazon Prime will get my business) if they move so far away. The guy did say they were "stuck" with the spot about the old Nine West store. I asked why they didn't take those two floors. Hopefully they will move right next store.

Locked Out Neighbor Scam

Just had someone ring my doorbell, then jiggle my doorhandle, and when I answered (a minute later) he was on his way down my steps, but started into a short shpeel about being my neighbor from across the street and being locked out. I was standoff-ish, so he scurried off, but the while thing was so strange that I called the police to do a driveby. Afterward I did a quick Google search which led me to another post on their site from the North Center neighborhood.

So this guy's definitely a scammer. Just search this site for "neighbor in distress" and read the posts. Wanted to start a new post here since it appears the scammer is now starting to target the Lakeview neighborhood.

From the other posts, it appears the guy is after a few bucks, but who knows when that starts to escalate.

Guy was white, about 6', short hair, medium-light brown, maybe 50 years old. Wore a black leather jacket.

We live in Lincoln Park and my wife has had this happen to her (same guy) twice when she was at home in the middle of the day. The guy in her case claimed his wife was pregnant and in labor but he had lost his keys or something like that. The guy was quite aggressive. Don't open your door and call 911.

Peoples Gas Signage Added After Cars Parked

At 9:30 am, I witnessed People Gas add signs to the trees in front of our business showing no parking from today (12/17) beginning at 7 am until 4 pm and ending on 12/31. Thanks for the notice, but the cars that have been parked there already better not get tickets since they just put the signs up and the cars were there earlier. I don't know the owners of these cars or I would give them a heads up. Just not right.

  • When they did similar utility work on Addison last month (for the Wrigley project), they put a paper sign on the fence where each car was, giving the address (a block away) where it had been towed to. No tickets, no charges.

  • They did this to me this summer. They put up a sign in front of my parked car about an hour before they came and towed it.

They towed my car from Aldine all the way up to Montrose Beach (not long after the shooting up there and the "riot")....

To make matters worse, they gave me a ticket it. I disputed it by mail and they dismissed the ticket. I didn't so much mind them moving my car (just wish it would have been in the neighborhood). What bugged me was the ticket.

"Neighbor" in Distress

Guy rang our bell around 10 pm, introduced himself as our neighbor, and launched into a story, which boiled down to the fact that he couldn't get into his apartment on Oakley just north of Irving Park. Asked if there was a Home Depot nearby - then asked for a ride (didn't get one). Then asked for a ladder (didn't have one). I guess there's a chance this guy was on the up-and-up and having a really bad night, but this rings all kinds of warning bells for me. Anyone else encounter him?

I am looking for a good Chinese Restaurant/Take-out in the Lakeview or Roscoe Village Area. I have tried a few and nothing to make me want to go back again. Any suggestions? Thank you.

  • ....and now I need to have Young's hot & sour soup for lunch. :-)
Young's is much nicer inside than the sign would indicate, btw - great for in-house diming, too!

Police Activity at 555 Cornelia Ave

Hey guys! I've been trolling the internet and EveryBlock trying to figure out what the heck happened but at about 5am on 12/4 (thursday morning) I walked out of my place and there were GOBS of police vehicles pointed in every which direction on Cornelia and Pine grove at that T in the road and had the street blocked off for like 6 hours. Seemed like there was a body on the ground beneath the balconies but I never heard any sirens or ambulances.... any one know what happened?

  • Rylee ChiDoc

So sad :( and no the scaffolding has been there for quite some time.... Maybe 5 months? However, I hadn't really seen anyone working on the windows until after this happened.

Accident at Irving and Bell?

NPR reported this morning an accident involving a pedestrian at Irving Park and Bell. Does anyone know anything?

  • I heard the same thing; they said car vs pedestrian. I was driving north on Western at the time. As I crossed Irving, there was no sign of emergency vehicle activity on Irving, so it must have been on Bell. There are a number of elementary schools over there and often parents and kids walking at that time of day. Hope everyone is ok.

  • I live right there. I get so annoyed at how fast some people turning off Irving drive down Bell. There are a lot of pedestrians on this block, including young kids. I hope everyone is OK.

  • CJL ...

Really bad at dropoff and pickup with the non-walking St Bens' parents. Notwithstanding that it's mostly "their" kids walking there.

Landscape architect / designer

Although we haven't yet hit Christmas, i'm starting to do some research for a landscape designer to so we can start work on redoing our yard at the first sign of spring. While I've done some research online, I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations of companies you've used int he past? We don't plan on doing anything over the top, but want to make the front of our city home look great, and likely replace the side half lot (~12 ft wide) that runs the full length of our home. Oh, and keeping the price reasonable would help too:) Any suggestions?

Just seen heading west toward Masonic on wellington wearing maroon scrub pants (45 min ago), so he may work there; or live across the street in the rehab program or very nearby.
He and the other taller guy, both in trech coats, were going around the block on foot Sun night about 9-10pm (Barry -kemore-Belmont-fletcher)and dissapeared just south of belmont on fletcher.
If you were a victim of the crime I suggest asking security at Illinois Masonic if they know the guy. -Might be transport, tech or maintenance. If he is the perp doing the crime he'll be easily id'd.
-the problem is getting the police there fast

  • I have lived in my neighborhood for most of the last 23 years, and other than my close neighbors, I couldn't tell you who "belongs" here and who does not (if we're going solely by looks and not actions). And there are fewer people (more SF homes) around here than Belmont & Seminary. I find it more than a little hard to believe that you know everyone in the neighborhood.

Lost cat - $1,000 reward

  • I was just driving west down the alley (from Southport) between Oakdale and George and a cat with similar markings to Mila darted in front of my car and into the heavy brush/bushes in the southwest corner of the parking lot located on the corner of Oakdale and Southport (the old ZDE). I cannot be sure that it was Mila but figured it best to pass along the information.

  • Thanks. I will head over there now.
