Brown Elephant space (Halsted/Waveland)

All the For Rent signs are down and there is new paper covering on the windows. Anyone know anything about what is going in the space?

  • I don't think that space is in the 44th ward. The west side of the street does fall into the 44th.

1142 W Irving Park Speed Camera

Is anyone else receiving suspicious tickets from this camera? I've not gotten 3 tickets from this camera over the span of 3 months. Let me tell you, I never speed through there. I always double check my speedometer before crossing onto the block that the cemetary is on. On top of that, It's almost impossible to be doing 11 over the speed limit through there on the way home from work during rush hour.

  • I'm not saying there should be a city wide vigilante group that goes around disabling traffic cameras, but if there was such a group they'd be viewed as heroes.

  • Well, I'm being railroaded by the city on this. There's no help in any part of the whole fiasco. Not sure what I'm going to do, but $600 in bogus tickets is a big lump to swallow.

Looking for radio (car) repair hobbyist/shop

I have an early 1990s car with a radio that seems to be acting up. Or, the speakers need their amps looked.

I need someone that can bench-test both.

I tried Yelp and Google. Neither are helpful. I guess it is a dying craft.

Anyone know of a hobbyist or electronics shop in Northcenter?

  • Ravens Yes.I can fix that.

You might be all wet on this one. I have replaced many car stereos for various reasons similar to yours. If hear any kind of noise from the speakers that means they are ok. Everything else is inside the stereo. I think a junk yard is your quickest & least expensive answer. They are fairly easy to remove. Hope that helps.

Possible injured Cat (Sunny) Barry/Lakewood/ Nelson/ Racine

We're searching for one of our feral cats that is possibly injured in the neighborhood. He was last seen on Barry, west of Racine, and evaded our attempt to capture him. He's a medium sized gray cat with his winter coat, so he's quite furry. He's more skittish than friendly, as he a member of our working cat community hosted at 1232 Nelson. Please post any sightings to this thread as we're concerned for his wellbeing.
I also apologize if we caused any concern with flash lights shining in yards and side through ways. Thank you for your concerns - Tim

"Do not carry your credit card on you"

With the recent stick-ups in Lakeview and Lincoln Park, a police rep said in a radio interview that women shouldn't carry their credit cards in their purse. I kept wondering, where should the credit cards be carried?
I carry my cards in my wallet, I can't imagine not being without my credit card in my purse. And I don't want to put my credit card info on my cell phone for a thief to take and waive at a cashier.

When the snow gets packed down the alley becomes two ruts where wheels run with a ridge in the middle where cars' undercarriages have leveled and compacted the snow. Last year this froze like a rock and couldn't be moved, even with an ice chopper.
Tonight I had to help a neighbor who had got stuck trying to leave his garage and cross the ruts and the ridge. I'm way too old for this kind of stunt.
What we need is a snowplow to break up the ridge and clear the alley. Does anyone know someone who has a Jeep or truck with a snowplow who we could hire to plow the alley? I'm hoping some of my neighbors would chip in to help pay for this.
It's obnoxious to have to worry every time I leave or return to my garage. Thanks for your help.

I cant speak for the other stations. I dont think we are. We dont have access to the legal tools to find out what people are really concerned about. Mainly if the owner of the building is the owner and installer of the recording equipment. And if the owner of the building has anymore recording equipment in use in any illegal way. That would require warrants for search. Police have to do their due diligence and burn some good old fashion shoe leather.

Tone down on the alley honking

I ask that people give the horn a rest when pulling through an alley, especially before the sun has even shown its face. Slowing down and looking is a great alternative to blasting your horn and making unnecessary noise.

Thorek Hospital hidden fee

I went to see a Doctor who's office is located in Thorek's facilities about a month ago only to receive a bill from Thorek for $143 just because the doctor's office is there. Additionally, if a provider is in network, they are held to specific guidelines under their contracts with the insurance company. This includes what they're allowed to charge up front (prior to the claim being submitted), so it is very important to read your plan of benefits and ask questions when needed.

When you call to make an appointment ask the upfront if there's a facility fee or not. If in doubt get it in writing when you arrive.
This has been legit and under the radar for about the last seven or eight years. Because it is a revenue generator for the hospital, it has become more popular. As such, it has come on the radar of patients, insurance, and physicians who refer To other providers. Drs. don't want their patients getting double billed either. This was a cover article of medical economics last month. There's a good chance that charges Would be waived if you contest it with the hosp admin
I've been to Thorek alot and had great experiences.it was not sot great up until a few years ago. Most of the doctors are excellent, hard-working and dedicated -If you haven't been there recently you'd be surprised. The entire plant Has been renovated, Including the emergency room, laboratory, radiation oncology, MedSurg floors and outpatient OR facilities. There is an ophthalmologist and brand-new dental suite. There are several new physicians in the outpatient professional building which is connected-Check to see if their offices are independent with no facility fee or -other. Most of the nurses in the hospital are relatively new hires within the last five years and are young fresh and vibrant.
This is an interesting little community Hospital which has survived changing times for over 100 years -worth asking for a tour or just going over for lunch and walking around to get a feel for the place. It's definitely a convenient option for outpatient procedures and services. Easy free parking

Traffic light coming to Clark and School?

I drove through N. Clark and W. School tonight.

There's a new traffic light and pole there. It's not operating.

Anyone have any additional details?

I've driven through this intersection countless times. I noticed drivers don't always stop and go and yield in the correct order with other drivers who have been waiting. I figured it had something to do with the two streets not intersecting at a perfect 90 degrees. Somehow it is distracts or confuses us.

But, I never considered it enough of an issue to install a light.

Have there been a high number of accidents there? Or is this something to help with Wrigley Field traffic?

  • @CHP025

Amen to that, just so long as they aren't followed by a red left arrow. I freaking hate those. I just love being nannied and told that I'm not responsible enough to judge when it is safe to execute a left hand turn.

Change Coming to 44th Ward?

...maybe, maybe not, it will be for the voters to decide. But for the first time in several election cycles there are challengers to the incumbent in next month's election for 44th Ward Alderman. Come learn about the candidates and ask questions next week:

1. Monday, January 19 at 7pm at the next Southport Neighbors Association meeting. It will be at the Mercury Theater.
http://www.southportneighbors.com/meeting.html

2. Wednesday, January 21 at 6pm at the Hawthorne Neighbors Meeting. It will be at the Annoyance Theater
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hawthorne-Neighbors/589776931051310

Here's a chance to find out where the candidates stand on issues important to the community and ask questions.

  • Robert Rohdenburg Affordable Housing Activist for ONE Northside

A Google search of news stories on "Tunney" and "election" or "re-election" found no stories which mentioned him contemplating, thinking about, considering, or deciding on not running for re-election. Even if he though about it, I doubt that he would say it to a reporter. After Mayor Daley decided non-to run for re-election, their was story mention about a possible Tunney bid for election as Mayor of Chicago. If he had decided to run for mayor, he could campaign while still being 44th Ward Alderman.

  • Robert Rohdenburg Affordable Housing Activist for ONE Northside

There is a possibility that the "The Alderman was not invited to the forum" was a cover story for being busy doing something else that his chief of staff did not want to specify, but the appropriate and acceptable answer then would have been "The Alderman had a prior commitment that he couldn't break or change."

Shortly after being elected, Pawar clarified that he does not provide city services and went on to state that he is a “legislator”. (1) City Council meetings are very important for any legislator, but just as important are committee meetings, where legislation is crafted, debated, amended, discussed and presented to the public.

A recent study conducted by, Chicago Tonight, indicates that Pawar rarely attends committee meetings that he is assigned to, with an attendance rate of 20%. (2) Being a self proclaimed legislator, Pawar knows, or should know, how important attendance at these meetings really is. Instead, when questioned about his chronic absenteeism, Pawar said that he is busy providing constituent services (2), even though he previously described the belief that alderman provide services as a “myth” (1). Other aldermen provide constituent services, all the while, still attending committee meetings.

In May of this year, Pawar was quoted as saying: It’s still a 16 hour day. I’ll be up at 5:30 or 6am, go for a run, then have some breakfast and go to work at Northwestern. After work, I’ll meet with constituents, elected officials, community groups.” (see the below posted images of “Longshot Alderman not shying away from City’s problems” from Inside Booster, authored by Pat Butler dated May 9, 2012)

So, the alderman does not provide services because he is a legislator. When asked why he is not fulfilling his duties as a legislator, he is busy providing services and has put legislating on the back burner. Maybe the real reason for the degradation of services and the abhorrent attendance record is the fact that the alderman is too busy working at Northwestern.

Is The Houndry (dog daycare & boarding) still open? Moved?

We are frequent (though not so much in the last 2 months) customers of The Houndry for day care and sometimes boarding for our pup.I'm trying to schedule a daycare session this week and cannot get a hold of anyone at the office (no ring, just voicemail) and cannot find updates anywhere about whether there is something going on more than a temporary issue with their phone line. Any info is greatly appreciated! Totally in the dark and a bit worried since we had purchased some packages there and never got news from them that they were closing or officially moving.

  • So I just went by the Houndry and still no sign in the door but clearly they are packing up. I walked down Broadway near Dakin too and looked in the buildings for lease but I don't see any activity in them... If they are reopening over there it doesn't seem like it will be all that soon. Fingers crossed.

  • Thanks for the update, Kami! No new information on my end but let me know if you hear anything. Today I called the Houndry's follow up number that had been posted on the door and someone, I think, picked up and then hung up. So now sure what that's about but...weird.
