Hit & Run - looking for car

I was hit by a car this morning. A nice bystander took down the plates, but the drive took off before help arrived. CPD ran the plates but did not find anything, I want to find this driver. The accident was near Ravenswoood and Berteau. I am looking for a white Mazda CX7 with TEXAS plates (similar to CS8 S061, but apparently that's incorrect). Please let me know if you see this car in your neigborhood.

  • Thanks everyone. My attorney's office has contacted the Texas DMV. My witness got the plate right. They won't release information to the attorney w/o a subpoena or updated police report. So we're working w/CPD. (though it may take awhile) Thanks for keeping your eyes out.

  • LStone Western and Lawrence

Kristin I am sorry you were injured and the driver behaved illegally. Sounds odd but it is encouraging to me to read how many people stepped up (and are stepping up) to help correct this wrong. I hold you in my thoughts for a speedy recovery and am grateful that Chicago turned out some really decent folks in the just the right place to help you through.

Dr. Olivia Forys

I got a letter saying that my GP, Dr. Olivia Forys, is leaving her practice with Rush. I'd really like to keep her as my doctor, but the letter didn't say where she is going (if anywhere in Chicago). If anyone has information, it would be much appreciated. I certainly hope she's doing OK.

I came home to find my kitty unresponsive and barely breathing. I put her in my arms and rushed to the first place I could think of, giving CPR over her mouth at stop lights, and drove to Cat Hospital on Irving Park. They took her in immediately, were compassionate and excellent emergency care. She was almost 19 years old and she has been with us ever since we picked her up at an apple farm in Michigan. I was able to contact my son in Australia so he could say his goodbyes and nurses were supportive during the transition time that followed as our wonderful cat passed on. I had taken her there only one other time many years ago but they treated her with kindness and quick response. My regular vet is a traveling vet and comes to the house and always spent a good hour when we had her check-ups, shots, or anything else. He rents space if surgery is needed. That's why I needed to go somewhere immediately and Cat Hospital was there for us. Our kitty gave us so much joy and fun times. We miss her so.

Experiences with apartment searching in early spring/late winter?

Hello Everyone!

I am looking for people who have had experiences with searching for apartments with April 1st least start dates. Our current lease ends at the end of September, but our landlord made us an offer to extend our lease to the end of March. I have tried searching the web for information regarding what the rental market looks like during that time, but haven't really found anything.

We know that the October 1st lease starting time is one of the busiest and most fast paced rental seasons, but we may not be able to invest the time in August and September that is needed to snap up a nice apartment so we are seriously considering the April start date alternative.

So I am asking if any of you have any experience with the April start date rental market. Do there tend to be a decent amount of properties available in a variety of neighborhoods? Do the prices fluctuate at all? Is it silly to think that the market at that time won't be as ideal?

Any and all information or anecdotes you could send our way would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

  • Tom Zullo Lakeview Resident 16 years and counting!

I am a landlord and being a native for many years in Chicago, I see May as the biggest month for rental opportunities and through the summer. People typically move here after graduation and or with a young family with the intention in being settled before fall hits. That said, rental agreements cycle or renew (or not) May through Summer months.

  • Thank you all for the information. It really helps a lot!

Awful water taste - Chicago apt bldg

Hi - I live in an old Chicago apartment bldg and have lived here for a number of years. The bldg is probably 80 years old. Recently the tap water has tasted really bad. I cannot figure out what it is, but it really doesn't taste right...a strong flavor. I know I should invest in a good water filter but have not been able to afford that. Any ideas where I can find out what's going on with my water? My landlord is relatively OK, but is very hesitant to invest any time or money unless absolutely necessary....

I can always taste filtered vs non filtered. I don't see it as a waste of money whatsoever, nor do I find it to be expensive. Filters produce measurable, scientific changes measured to NSF/ANSI standards. Your basic water filter is tested against ANSI 42 for appearance and often ANSI 53 for health contaminant standards, and you can look up exactly what, scientifically speaking they are filtering.

If you're running the water and the taste is changing after a minute, it's likely because your pipes are galvanized and full of 50 years of rust and crud. Your incoming water pipe into your house is likely also made of lead. Your basic pur/brita PITCHER does not filter lead though. However, the faucet mount ones they make do (both pur and brita), as well as a long list of other items. Also AFAIK Pur pitcher filters have a better particulate filter vs the Brita (they measure this by a "class" classification--again in the data sheets), which is also why the Pur filters take longer for the water to drip through though. If you are looking at Pur, skip the model where it's the largest one with the spigot that you flip for water--it has a design flaw where it creates an air lock that doesn't let the water actually get through the filter (literally hundreds of reviews complaining of this on amzn, not sure why they even sell it. learned the hard way o that one)

If you put a pitcher of water in the refrigerator, the chlorine will naturally dissipate without a filter but it takes a few days.

  • Neighborly1~ Values community.

Thanks, everyone! Did not know this. Am using Brita now until I get a better filter. Thank you.

My family and I were recently at Montrose beach (before the weekend of the riot) and we noticed an alarming amount of glass shards and trash blowing around. Since when did our beaches become dumping grounds? I spent most of my time collecting trash that others left behind as well as over 20 pieces of glass (which looked to be from broken beer bottles) as well as plastic utensils, broken plastic shovels, deflated balloons, etc. Some of the glass was even buried under the sand where my son was making a sand castle (luckily nobody was cut). When I asked the lifeguard why there was so much trash blowing around and left behind, she mentioned that the city has cut back on having the city come out to clean our beaches. Another problem is that the trash cans were at least 50 yards from where the water and I think people are too lazy to walk the distance to throw away their garbage. At the least, why can't the city provide signs that tell people they will get fined for littering (although who will stand watch if we can't even afford to have clean-up crews?)? Regardless, its a shame and extremely depressing. If people continue to ignore this problem (or continue to contribute to it) our beaches will be destroyed in a few years. Please help keep our lakefront clean. Any suggestions as to what we can do to help with this problem are welcome. I don't necessarily want to spend my weekends patrolling our beaches and cleaning up other peoples garbage. Has anyone else noticed this problem? What can we do? I don't plan on taking my family back to the beach this year since my recent experience was such a mess.

They must have left some food behind because the Southport storefront is now littered with dead flies...such an eyesore, creeps me out each time I walk past it on my commute. Shocked that the chain closed, they must have overexpanded--this location had a line of customers every evening.

  • Personally, I never understood the business model. I bought pizzas from them twice and stopped after I realized I could get a pizza made, and delivered to me for the same price as this place. Did I mention that the delivered pizza was already made? I didn't have to cook it myself.

I found them to be overpriced for what they were offering.

And I did not comment on the difficulty of shlepping items, nor did you. You only said that there was no way to get there except by car, which is not true.
Nobody has argued that the elimination of the route has not affected businesses along Lincoln. There is no reason to make up facts to support your argument.

I yell "hey." He looks around then resumes attempt. I yell "Get out of here." He sees me and then takes off running westbound down alley. Called 911, operator was great, and they put some cops on it. Never saw where the Caucasian male went.

The brazen, daylight event during the midst of commuters going back and forth from garages was pretty remarkable. Keep your heads up!

  • On Monday, July 15 at 10 a.m. I observed two males of a similar description on bikes southbound in the alley between Southport and Greenview, north of Irving Park, and then on Cuyler. Their demeanor was off. They were riding slowly and looking at back gates and into back yards. One looked on one side of the alley and the other looked at the other side. I saw their faces too fast to notice more. Police responded, but did not find the riders.

  • Jim, my partner saw these guys on the 700 block of Melrose at around 9:30pm the same day you saw them. She said they were acting strangely and looked like they were casing houses. I told her to call the cops next time.

The guys I saw did seem a bit "out of it" and weren't exactly subtle in their approach. Good idea to always call the police. Agreed.

Those provisions involve, amongst other things, the LV2 parking program.

Although the ordinance you cite above did not pass City Council, the intent of the ordinance was incorporated into the new night baseball game ordinance. Therefore, LV2 is in force during concert events at Wrigley Field attracting more than 12,500 visitors. You may also notice that this year that the LV2 double yellow signs that list the game dates around the LV2 neighborhoods also read 'Concerts TBD.'

LV2 should be enforced during the concerts on July 18th and 19th this year. No further legislation is necessary to make this happen.

The signs are there, they're just ignored by parking enforcement and the Cubs as they were last year when they first included the concert wording.

I find it frustrating that on the Cubs community newsletter they state:
"Parking Restrictions for the Show Days:
Irving Park Road from Ashland Avenue to Clark Street
Clark Street from Irving Park Road to Roscoe Street
Racine Avenue (East Side) from Patterson Avenue to Addison Street
Addison Street from Ashland Avenue to Clark Street "
It neglects to state that ANY neighborhood parking restrictions are in effect for those dates.

Regardless, contact your alderman and the Cubs hotline if you have any problems in your neighborhood.
