Looking for radio (car) repair hobbyist/shop

I have an early 1990s car with a radio that seems to be acting up. Or, the speakers need their amps looked.

I need someone that can bench-test both.

I tried Yelp and Google. Neither are helpful. I guess it is a dying craft.

Anyone know of a hobbyist or electronics shop in Northcenter?

Robin--Thanks for the info about pay-to-play in Angie's List. How did you learn of this? It's despicable!

  • SixtyTwoPercentWater Neighborhood Blogger

All - I am still looking. Surely there is a guy/gal in a basement somewhere with a soldering iron and a box full of electronic parts looking for work.

Thanks for the feedback. I will try another angle (look up electronics dealers and back into repair persons.)

Wellington and Mildred resident's

Stop being such cry babies about the ambulances and now fire trucks parking on Wellington in front of Illionis Masonic Hospital. You don't own the street and if you got a life and stopped staring out your window, you wouldn't even know they were there.
The good people of the neighborhood are tired of listening to you whine. What, did you buy your house in the middle of the night and not notice the huge hospital?
Shut up already!

After coming in second in the February 2011 general election, John Arena beat opponent John Garrido by 30 votes in an April 2011 runoff to become alderman of the northwest side's 45th Ward, which covers parts of Norwood Park, Jefferson Park, Portage Park, and Old Irving Park. In the February 2015 election, Arena, a member of the City Council's Progressive Caucus and a frequent thorn in Mayor Rahm Emanuel's side, faced three challengers, including Garrido, a Chicago Police lieutenant. Arena beat Garrido by 750 votes but failed to get enough votes to avoid a runoff. The two candidates join us for a forum to discuss their vision for the 45th Ward.

Lost black and white cat

Mila got out of her home on Lakewood between Diversey and Wolfram in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago on Saturday, September 6, 2014, and she is still missing.

Mila is a 3 year-old black-and-white cat with green-yellow eyes. Her back is black while her belly, chest and paws are white. She has black around her eyes and a little black button nose. Mila is micro-chipped and was wearing a black-and-white collar with her name and our number on it. The collar has no tags or bells attached.

What's the going rate for tipping movers?

  • I recently used Schlep (www.schlep.it) to move an armoire; they were fantastic and the cost was $80, so I tipped $10 for each Schlepper.

  • I have always ordered lunch for the crew and tipped based on their individual performance( I have moved 3 times in 15 years) the median tip being $30.00.

Pension Reform - Budget - Civic Federation - Tribune Editorial

I read the Op Ed piece in today's Tribune. Pretty nasty way to get a pension, if that is true (work one day, pay some credits a voila! $97K a year for life).

That got me wondering a few things. Normally, I go right to the idea "who should I blame for this mess" but that won't solve the underlying issue. I started to think through who "owns" approving pension plans in general and who might have an unbiased opinion...

That got me wondering a few things. Normally, I go right to the idea "who should I blame for this mess" but that won't solve the underlying issue. I started to think through who "owns" approving pension plans in general and who might have an unbiased opinion on the matter. I needed to find someplace, somewhere that would have a white paper I can read.

That lead me to the Civic Federation. (No affiliation in any way.)

I took a read about the FY2016 budget on the Civic Federation's website. Seems they have half a dozen or so fixes/ideas that will get us back on sensible fiscal footing.

I guess my question is, does anyone have any experience with their projections or their math? I am curious if they have the required rigor of analysis done to be considered a viable, reliable source for reform recommendations. Thoughts?

  • The Civic Federation is well-regarded as a credible source of rigorous analysis. Government entities and news organizations respect and seek CF's input.

New Home Construction Cost

We have a small single family home in North Center and looking to tear-down and rebuild. Has anyone gone through this process? We haven’t started searching for a contractor yet and don’t know what to expect in terms of cost. We have searched new construction in the area and would like to build a home similar to what is being built around us, a single family, framed home approx. 4000 square ft. Anyone know what the approx. cost would be from tear-down to move in ready? I know there are many variables so a range would help. We currently have no mortgage on our house and know taxes will increase. Thanks for your help.

J: "It looks like I have a cistern in my back yard. Basically looks like a sewer lid in the ground on the back of the house"

That you have the cistern doesn't mean it's still tied in--there could have been something done in the past. *usually*, if it was done properly, they would have backfilled the cistern with sand/gravel. So if you lift the cover and it's part/all full of sand/gravel, then it's out of service. Otherwise, you at least have to have someone take a look at it.

The cistern in my yard was (and as I understand it, in most cases, in NC/LS) originally basically a grease trap--the kitchen drains ran to a sewer line that ran out to the cistern, and then there was another sewer line out of the cistern (higher than the kitchen inflow) tying into the line that runs to the main under the street. So the heavy grease and food debris would settle into the bottom of the cistern, and the cleaner water flow out to the main. Ours has been all capped off and filled, but is still there in the backyard.

Permit question

We are in the process of buying a new duplex in Lake View (yay!) and once everything is finalized will need/want to do some work on the unit including updating the kitchen and maybe some work on the above garage deck. I know a lot of the work will require city permits. Does anyone have advice on navigating those waters? We've only rented till now so I have no idea what we are getting into. Also any suggestions for designers and/or contractors is greatly appreciated! TIA!!!

A brief summary of what requires a permit in Chicago, nearly everything except interior finish work, i.e. adding tile back splash, replacing drywall, etc... Depending on what you are doing for the kitchen you may or may not need a permit. If it requires plumbing work, electrical work, the moving, demolition or adding new walls, it will need a permit.

For the garage deck, it also depends on what you are doing. If you are just replacing boards, you might not need a permit, but replacing the entire structure or adding a deck will definitely need a permit.

The city does have an "easy permit" process for minor work that does not require architectural drawings. Supposedly they issue a permit the same day, compared to a few weeks to months with the standard permit application route.

I am an architect with my own practice. Feel free to call me at 312.945.6208 and I can discuss this further.

When we replaced our roof and roof deck, the contractor handled the permitting process. However, we did have them pay an expediter so we didn't wait forever for the permit.

The building department in this city is so corrupt it's amazing. Pay an expeditor or it's 3+ months. Total corruption, still continuing under Rahm.

How long will construction at Addison and Western last?

Anyone know how long the construction will last at Addison & Western? It's quite a nightmare at the moment. Thanks!

  • Bus rapid transit. Makes so much more sense on Western than on Ashland.

  • Im in agreement. Especially because Western goes the entire length of the city. The Ashland bus stops at Irving. Not helpful to get to the city's northern neighborhoods by bus easily.

Also Western is a good middle ground between the blue line or the brown line on the north side. On the south side, just the orange line.

Who do you love as a hair stylist?

I'm looking for a stylist to cut my hair every 6-8 weeks. My current stylist is great at color but I need a separate person for cuts. The man who used to cut my hair moved back to Ohio. :-( Any suggestions? I'm in Lakeview but am willing to travel a bit for a fantastic cut and style. My hair is several inches below the shoulders, very straight and relatively healthy.

Thank you for any and all suggestions.

Undecided voters...what would get you to vote for either Mayoral candidate?

On the fence? Any one thing that would sway your opinion?

I don't know that I'm voting for Chui or Rahm. For me, I'd reconsider Rahm if he immediately implemented a Mayoral 2-term limit; and if he convinced the aldermen to implement a 3-term-limit on Aldermen (grandfathering existing Aldermen, oh, of course), I think he'd run away with the race. So much of the trouble we're in now could've been avoided if we didn't have a life-time Mayor sitting on fixing the major issues whilst hoping for good luck to occasionally sweep them away.

  • Nora H 11year Lakeview resident, member ELVN.

For some reason I can't seem to paste the link to a You Tube interview of David Orr talking about Rahm and the city finances. Look for it and see how the books are cooked and more on TIF money. You certainly don't get the whole story from the Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune.

  • Rahm has done something positive and helpful. He closed a bunch of expensive and ineffective schools and caught heck for it. The city has a huge dark financial cloud hanging over it. It doesn't matter who is mayor. Noone wants the real solution.

Rooftop deck

I just bought a condo and have private rooftop rights. However, there is only one stairwell, so I'm assuming I will be unable to build a rooftop deck according to city ordinance. I've seen other EB posts about this situation and wondered if anyone knew of any legal loopholes or other options for the rooftop besides building a deck. I do not want to build if I can't get the permit. Thanks!

  • Thanks for the helpful info! I've seen some people put artificial lawn and furniture on the rooftop instead of building a deck and wondered if that was because it was easier to do and didn't need to meet the same city requirements as a deck (no permit required, etc). Some actually look pretty good.

    Dave78,
In regards to the two exit issue, a number of factors in the building code will determine if you need two exits: the size of the deck, the travel distance from the deck to an egress exit, and the occupant load of the deck. Size itself is not the only determinant for two exits. Also, be advised that the city requires a 100 pounds per square foot loading for the deck. Unless there has been a legal deck on it in the last 10 years or so, the structure capacity will need to be increased to meet code. Thus, the roof and sheathing will have to be ripped up, the joist will have to be replaced or additional ones added before re-roofing and then building the deck and possibly the second exit. This all can only happen if the zoning for you house allows a deck.

    d3,
For the risk involved in an illegal and non-permitted deck, lets say is that you build one without the structure being upgraded or a second exit (if required) being added. Maybe this will be fine, maybe you and your spouse are the only ones that will ever use it when you own it. However, you get tired of the cold winters and move, thus selling your house, and you keep the deck on for selling features. A young vibrant couple buys the house in spring, they move in on the first 70+ degree day and throw a party. Friends tell friends, and the deck is packed full, the structure that was designed for a 20 pounds per square foot yields, collapses, and kills 13, severely injuries 10, and the rest have minor injuries.

Who do you think is liable for putting an illegal deck on that roof? If you have ever sold a home, you have more than likely signed something saying that you got all required permits for the work on the house you are selling.

Please, we all need to be responsible for safe homes.

    Cheers,
    Jon, Architect & Home Inspector

My first suggestion would be to first do a zoning and building permit analysis to see if you can 1) get zoning approval without a variance. Currently zoning is severely backed up from medical marijuana applications; this is not a joke. 2) If you actually need two exits or not. Most likely you will, but a few things effect this, such as: travel distance from the most remote point on the roof deck to a legal exit, the square footage of the deck, and the occupant count of the deck.

Please note that putting a deck on the roof, will almost certainly require work to the roof structure because unless there was a legal deck on the roof recently it does not meet the 100 pounds per square foot live load requirement in addition to the dead load of the new deck. What does this mean? The roofing and sheathing will have to ripped up, new joist added or the old ones replaced, then new sheathing and new roofing will have to be put back on. Then the deck can be placed on the roof. So as someone stated before, depending on all of these factors plus more like, permit fees, inspection fees, & type of materials the cost can have a wide range.

My firm is Hydrant Studio and I can be reached at 312.945.6208 or submit your information at www.hydrantstudio.com

    Cheers,

I realized that I did not answered your initial question. The permit process will involve having an architect or possibly a structural engineer prepare all pertinent drawings for the project. Then either you or the architect can upload the digital drawings in the DWF format, the building permit application and other extraneous documents in PDF format. A zoning review fee of at least $75 is required during submission of the drawings.

If the project gets a pass from zoning, then the building department will review it for building code conformance. If the drawings are deemed suitable, the project will be granted a permit which will be available for download after the permit fee is paid in full. The fee varies on project type and size of project.

The GC or owner, whoever agrees, at the appropriate time schedules the inspections. The time it takes for an inspector to come out to the job site depends on the workload; I can not really predict this. When an inspection is passed, the project can continue.

    Cheers,
    Jon

Avoid cleaner/handyman team 773-355-9084

Just a warning to neighbors, I had hired a couple team handyman + cleaning person. Proved to be super unprofessional, changed the price multiple times and did not show up to the gig. You would be advised not to hire these people. Noemi is the cleaner and Jesse or Jesus is the handyman. They share a cell phone, the number is 773-355-9084

You're in a gap, most of the time. The new southern approach--which has most of the 747s on it--usually turns west just SW of Western and IPR. And they come in *much* lower than they used to.

I find it mildly annoying, and certainly would prefer that they don't *turn* so lcose to directly over head of my home. But, I've lived other places where, on the days that the approach or departure was overhead, were genuinely unpleasant to be outside. This is not that bad.
