Cinnamon Ice Cream

I fully admit this is a ridiculous question. Does anyone know of a place that sells cinnamon ice cream (store, shop, any place)? I've tried Mariano's and Jewel. I used to live in MN and during the holidays Kemp's would have it at the local grocers. I've heard that Blue Bunny also has it, but I haven't seen it at Jewel. (This is my mom's favorite and she is old and not well, so I'd like to find it before Thanksgiving.)

Attempted break in - laundry room

Someone smashed the glass of our building's basement around 1300 W Barry. We called 911 and when the police arrived, they stated that someone may have tried to get to the laundry machine to steal the money. People watch out.

  • There is a lot of theft happening in the area, plus holdups. It's the Holidays and the bad people come out in droves. Their excuse is to get Christmas money.

  • Admittedly, now that I got the courage to look at which window got broken, I wonder if it was just an act of vandalism. The front garden apartment has several packages outside of their door that haven't been taken, and the cars in the back weren't broken into. We just have a small windowpane. I'm not sure what the person(s) who broke our glass were trying to do, but it definitely sounded scary as there were several thumps (maybe trying to break through the side door?) before breaking the window.

Thanks for your prompt reply. However, it seems unoriginal (and uninspired) to assume the name of a pre-existing venture. Use of the public library is gratis. Doesn't mean everything there is up for grabs.

Dirt disposal

Any idea how to get rid of old dirt from container gardens? Looks like the yard waste disposal doesn't include soil. I have 20-30 gallons of potting soil used with vegetables for one season. Thoughts on where I can put this?

  • spe

I can use 10-20 gal. if you can deliver. There are a couple of containers next to my garage in Roscoe Village, so it's an easy anytime drop off. PM for more info. Thanks.

  • Can you spread it over your lawn or parkway?

Panera Bread at Ashland and School Falls Through; Target Development Not Happening

According to the latest flyers from Cushman &Wakefield, Panera Bread is no longer coming to Ashland and School and they are re-releasing it to market. Vitamin Shoppe is a go, and Target is no longer pictured on the map.

Looking for a worthy cause to donate childrens toys/home stuff to...

We like to rotate out our still-newish toys and home stuff. Rather than send to Salvation Army for resale, we were hoping to donate to a cause here in Northcenter. Maybe a shelter or support center for single moms/dads, etc.

Ideas? Recommendations?

  • Ravenswood Community Child Care Center (RC4) provides very affordable child care to teenage parents (in addition to full-paying parents from the community), so long as those teens are pursuing their high school diploma or college degree. To donate toys to these kids, you can contact the daycare directly (www.rc4cares.com) or contact Parenting PROgress (http://ravenscov.org/mission-outreach/parenting-progress/), a program that provides support for these parents and their children.

  • SixtyTwoPercentWater Neighborhood Blogger

Thanks all for the recommendations. We went with HGS and they could not be any more appreciative of the donation. I feel like the things went to a good place.

Snowbirds?

Yikes, this is the first time I've seen so MANY large flocks of migrating ducks/geese (?) overhead in such a short time. In the past few days, I've seen (and heard - they're loud enough to be heard inside, at which point I run outside to take a look) multiple flocks of what look like up to fifty/sixty or more birds flying in perfect formations...and headed south. Anybody else enjoying the show? Any birders out there know if this concentrated...

In the past, I've seen flocks migrating, but never so many in such a short time, directly over this area (St. Ben's). I guess it's not just OHare that's changing their flight plans.

Found Cat: Grey & White

For the past 4 days there has been a grey & white cat hanging around my house near Seminary & Eddy. He/She seems like an indoor cat, looks very soft & clean. I've tried a few times to get it to come to me, but have not had any luck. Thought it would be a good idea to post in case someone is looking for her. If I'm able to bring her inside, I will take her to PAWS.

  • Thanks for posting and trying to help his kitty. You can also post on Lost Cats Illinois via Facebook, a picture would help too. Poor thing is probably hungry and freezing out there. If you're able to get her/him inside you could also try taking her to a local vet to scan for a microchip.

  • Thanks for posting. If it wouldn't be too much hassle you might try to lure the cat with some wet food (very cheap), and then take her/him to get checked for a microchip. I'm sure he/she is just scared and has a home somewhere!

Referendum on CTA Belmont "Flyover" on Last Page of Ballot

There will be a referendum about the planned CTA “Flyover” on the Nov. 4 Election Ballot in the #20, 36 & 38 precincts of the 44th ward. Vote NO to protect Central Lakeview!

The Referendum: Has the CTA sufficiently justified the $320 million proposed Brown Line Flyover project and its impact on local homes and businesses?

Vote NO to insist the CTA let the community know what they plan before it’s too late to stop them.

The CTA Belmont El ‘flyover’ will waste $320 million++. Save Central Lakeview, a thriving restaurant, shopping, business district, from being ruined by the unnecessary Brown Line ‘flyover.’ Don’t let them waste your money, ruin your neighborhood.

The flyover will swing wide over two blocks of Clark Street, turning a large chunk
of this essential street into an under-El wasteland. Many commercial buildings and homes will be destroyed. Those still standing will be left facing under-El emptiness and an overhead train.

The CTA ‘findings’ are false, their drawings intentionally misleading.
Plans have NOT been finalized; please speak up for Lakeview before it’s too late.

  • The water, like the metal of the elevated structure, was likely quite cold and the tracks were getting hit with spray driven by the wind. Most of the heat from the fire rises upward, without traveling laterally, and given the extreme cold that morning it likely wasn't close enough to heat up the elevated. Further the firemen would have continued to douse the building long after obvious visible signs of fire were extinguished (in order to prevent any smoldering embers from reigniting).

  • Thanks, Hank, I hadn't checked the news, only what I saw out the window from the train.

Stop giving Bistro Dre your money

Hey all,

After a tip from an associate, I keep a pretty close eye on Bistro Dre's Yelp page. If you dig enough, you'll find a few reviews that walk the line between absurd and terrifying. Drunken antics by Dre in the dining room in the midst of service are not rare. At night, from time to time, I hear Dre berating one of his staff members (yes, it's loud and aggressive enough to hear from a distance).
All this to say, on Saturday night a yelp review mentions and an assault on one of his wait staff who was trying to calm him down.

http://www.yelp.com/biz/bistro-dre-chicago?hrid=FTHYV_Fxc-sDn2HgcvjnDA
http://www.yelp.com/biz/bistro-dre-chicago?hrid=ILRsAO5QfKAMM8IHdwQh4Q

My thoughts on writing this are two-fold.
Dre should not be in business. He's a madman with a terrified staff under his thumb.
But, the staff is awesome, kind, smart and hardworking.
Are there any other business owners or hiring managers who could approach the staff at Dre to get them out of there?

At the very least, Lakeview, stop giving Dre your money.

  • I went there once. Food was great, but towards the end of our meal a woman who seemed like a manager started screaming at our waiter, in the middle of the restaurant. This went on for several minutes. And I believe it had something to do with rolling silverware. I thought it was horribly unprofessional. Our waiter had given us good service.

  • I once worked for someone who sound exactly like the owners of Dre. I will never put myself in that position again and now that I have a heads up I'll never visit that establishment. People who feel like they can berate others (period), let alone in front of their patrons have no business being in business. Shame on them.

If you had your booted car Removed from Oakdale and PineGrove 11-19

The revenue agent took the boot off, they attached a chain to the front wheel, pulled the car out of the parking space, sent a few parts of the body and/or suspension flying into the street - I got these pics and don't know what happened next. They were not very gentle with the procedure.
