Dogs out in the cold

I live on Melrose between Lakewood and Southport, and there is a family two doors to the west of us who leaves their little terrier out in the cold. It's never for more than two hours, but he is clearly miserable and barks the entire time. I just wanted to remind people that short-haired dogs are not equipped to stay out in the cold for long! (Dogs that were bred for cold are ok. I saw a Samoyed in a car with the window rolled down last night, and he appeared to be loving it). Please keep your short-haired pets inside as much as possible when it is cold out, especially if they contribute to noise pollution :-)

  • Molly, have you said something to your neighbors??

  • @ BP Resident: I don't think people who live in a two million dollar home really need to be told that it's inconsiderate and cruel to leave a barking dog outside in winter. They know exactly what they're doing. They simply don't care.

Rooftop Deck -Permit

Hello,

I'm interested in building a rooftop deck on top of a 3 unit condominium. Can anyone share any tips on the permit/inspection process?

Much appreciated

  • Eblock10 Lakeview Resident

Thanks for all the feedback! The home owners assistance program seems like a great place to start.

  • Chris T 10 year Lincoln Square/Ravenswood resident.

When I moved into my 25 unit condo 10 years ago we looked into adding a deck. We never got to the real pricing but our building insurance alone would have gone up a lot.

Buyer looking for 4 bedroom home in Lakeview

New or newer construction preferred. Or complete renovation.
Thanks.

  • Ashley Donat Real Estate Broker ashley@millerchicagorealesta...

Email me at ashley@millerchicagorealestate.com! I have some options for you!!

  • The market is pretty tight right now but there are some options out there. Assuming you are looking for a single family home here is a summary of what is available by number of bedrooms and bathrooms: http://lucidrealty.com/homes-for-sale/Chicago_Lakeview/single_family_homes.php

You might also want to check out working with a full service realtor that shares their commission with you. It can save you thousands of dollars.

  • Michael Bucktown Resident

This "Airborn" fellow has posted very similar ads in Bucktown (looking for house in Bucktown) and Lincoln Park (looking for house in Lincoln Park) sections of EB too. Not sure what his or her agenda is, but surely finding a realtor in Chicago shouldn't be a problem. EB is not the right forum for this.

I've reviewed the published agendas of both the Zoning and the Housing committees from August 2014 through January 2015 and could find no mention of this address for a zoning change or any other city council or committee action. Because of the election, there will not be any city council meetings or committee meetings in February. There is a Housing committee hearing scheduled for 3/11 10am and two Zoning Committee Hearings next month: 3/12 and 3/17 , both staring at 10am in Council Chambers, before the 10am 3/18 City Council meeting. No agendas for these committee meetings are available yet. Shortly after 3/1 some of the agendas for the March meetings should start to appear. You can check the web site:
https://chicago.legistar.com/Calendar.aspx for any additional committee meeting dates, changes in times/locations, and the meeting agendas. The current or new alderman for the ward may know more about the property before any hearing action. The press coverage about the property are old stories at:

FedEx Southport Out, New Retail Development in at 3524 N. Southport Avenue

FedEx Office, currently located at 3524 N. Southport will be closing to make room for a new 12,000 square foot "Marquee Retail Space" on Southport Avenue. The current building will have a new facade like we currently see at the future Lou & Grey and Corridor Brewery building. The space will either be split in half with 6,000 square feet of retail, or combined as one giant 12,000 square foot retail space (much like Anthropologie, including a double-barrel truss roof).

Summer Options for 6 year old child

I'm looking for daycare options for my 6 year old for this upcoming summer. I work from 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday. The Neighborhood Boys & Girls Club doesn't start until 8 am but I have to be at work by 8 am. I need to pick up as late as 6 pm on some days. Any suggestions/recommendations for high quality group childcare for a 6 year old in the area? Looking for entire summer, not just short summer camps. Thank you!

  • mike Return Chicagoan circa 1996

Hamlin park offers day camps during the summer that I have sent my boys to. It's not too expensive and you need to sign up online. It is offered through the Chicago park district.

Like many high schools this time of year, the hallways at LVHS are full of students “Repping,” -- that is, representing their university choices through their sweatshirts, water bottles, and other college-bound gear.

“Repping is cool,” says Atil M, one of 30 LVHS seniors who will soon make U of I at Urbana-Champaign his home, majoring in Industrial Engineering. “I like reaping.”

I am currently working on a story about the successes and challenges of being the parent of a transgendered child. I am looking for a parent (and if possible their transgendered child) who would be willing to speak with me about their life experiences. The story would be composed of a 400-600 word article and a 2 minute video piece. So ideally, I would like to have you speak quickly to me on camera. It is possible to be on camera anonymously, although not preferred. The piece will be published on our website: http://news.medill.northwestern.edu/chicago/ and CanTV (the public access channel) for a day. If you are interested or know someone who may be a good contact, I would very much appreciate a message back.
Thanks, Julie

  • Hi Julie,
While I don't have a child, I just wanted to mention that generally the correct term is considered "transgender" instead of "transgendered."

    (See problematic terms)

    Good luck with your research!

Found a Ring

Yesterday I found a ring in the middle of the street on the intersection of Clark & Diversy. This seems to be a wedding ring & would like to return it to its rightful owner. I know this is a long shot, but I figured I'd try anyway. I'm not going to post a pic of it but if you recently lost your ring and believe it is yours please send me a private message with a detailed description or better yet a pic. Feel free to forward this.
