Chicago Speed Camera Map: watch out for one by Lane Tech High School

https://mapsengine.google.com/map/viewer?mid=zDIlbNW6Kzv4.kWRTNheTjAho

Just an fyi, speed cameras in school zones are set if you go over 20 mph. Watch out for one at 2501 W. Addison by Lane Tech High School. The normal speed limit is 30 mph and the cameras run longer than expected (6am - 9pm?) not just during school hours. $100 ticket.

water heater recommendations

The water heater in our 8 unit condo building needs to be replaced. Any recommendations on installers? Tankless?

Thank you in advance!

  • The best improvement I have ever made is getting a tankless hot water heater. I love it and had no problems. Endless hot water on demand, no running out of hot water if you take a bath then shower or have company. Saves on utilities because only heats water on demand.

  • Gas h/w heater from a Wheeling distributor was $400. My handyman was $100. $25 in copper parts. Dont get ripped off.

Property Tax Resource

Does anyone know of a good property tax resource such as a website to walk me through it or a lawyer.

I have successfully appealed by myself in the past. But I don't know if I got back the most I could have, I don't know if I should appeal again; if I should appeal again, I don't know if a lawyer is worth it or if I should just "make stuff up" like I did last time. All I know is my mailbox gets flooded with lawyers fishing for my business and I would prefer to pay less in taxes rather than more.

Thank you!

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

yes! Every Cook County homeowner should appeal property taxes every time her/his township is open!!

  • All you need is a GOOD appraisal from a CERTIFIED r/e appraiser. Send in the appraisal with the appeal to C/County. Call Illinois Appraisal. 773 528 4265. 25 yrs experience.

Need a vet

Does anyone know of a good vet in Lakeview?

  • John Olson Buena Park resident, work at Raven Theatre.

We've been going to McKillip as well, for years. They don't require appointments, and all the docs and staff are great. They also give an hour of free parking at the Century Mall.

  • I LOVE Dr Dave Russell from Evanston. He is a traveling Veterinarian, has had his practice a long time, and comes to your house. If surgery is needed, he rents surgery space. It is wonderful. He spends time in the comfort of your home with no stress to our animals, only gives them love and care. He loves his job, our pets and it's a joy when he comes for shot updates or whatever. Can't say enough about Dr. Dave!

Chimney Sweep and Regular House Cleaning

I hear I should have the chimney serviced before winter arrives, and as it seems to be coming early I think I should gather recommendations now and get some estimates.

I'm also interested in finding someone do to general house cleaning once a month and would love recommendations for that too. Also, as I've never had this before, can someone tell me the going rate for such a service?

Thanks Neighbors,
Lynne

Hard Candy Source?

I've recently developed a liking for hard candy. Do you know of a store that offers a good variety? I mostly shop at Jewel and Whole Foods, and they seem to concentrate on chocolates and chewy candies, with just a sampling of hard candies. Now I'm interested in branching out a bit.

Have you tried Windy City Treats on Broadway?

  • I totally agree! I have found some at Candiality but it is expensive.
Your best bet might be to check out Amazon for your favorite.

Parking lot bait and switch?

Hi to my fellow Chicagoans in Lake View. Last night my family purchased parking passes online for James G. Blaine Elementary School at 1420 W. Grace for the Zac Brown concert. They were advertised for $9.00 by Parking jockey online. Realizing the bargain, we grabbed two spots immediately and printed our passes. When we arrived at the parking lot, a provider attempted to charge us $40.00 each for the spots until we threatened to call the police.

The offer was out of line for the area, I realize that. What I didn't like was the bait and switch tactics. Before I get upbraided for not taking public transportation, my other family members came in from Milwaukee and had to return home last night. Typically I will take public transportation to concerts at Wrigley.

I wonder if some folks hijacked their parking lot? When I've parked at Blaine, I just pay there using the pay box.

Are you missing a Prius with Texas plates?

There's a silver Prius parked at the northeast corner of Lakewood and Wellington that's on the verge of being towed. It is parked too far from the curb and over the crosswalk. It has a smashed right, front fender and the inside of the car has been vandalized. It has had multiple tickets on it. In case this is your car and you've lost it, it was stolen, or whatever, you might want to move it.

I have recently had to put lay my best friend to rest. He gave me the best 15 years of my life. For the last 6 years, he suffered from glaucoma, had one eye removed, but was still the happiest guy around. Making people smile every time he passed by. Before the end, I had refilled all his meds which were very expensive. I would love to pass along the unused and unopened medication to someone who is going through the same thing and may need some help. I know that I could donate to the shelter or even my vets office, but as one of the meds needs to be kept cold when unopened. I didn't want it to go to waste by not being stored properly.

Please do let me know if this can be of use to anyone. Would gladly meet up and pass it along!

  • I'm sorry for your loss, like many others here I've had to do this myself just a couple months ago. What a kind way to honor your best friend.

I had a beloved dog that died of mitral value disease and I had left over expensive heart medicine when he passed. I too donated the medicine to PAWS. They were very happy to receive it.

Merryman Park Mugging?

Does anyone have any info about a mugging (at gunpoint!) in Merryman Park?? Our nanny told us about it and our kids are there all the time.
So very scary.

It is unclear as to whether any of the people in the park called 911. Someone who came upon the scene minutes later did call 911 but was not an accurate witness since they only saw the car drive away. It is incredibly scary but I think there are many facts missing in this case. It is a reminder to call 911 as soon as possible.

I was on my balcony on Sunday morning at about 3:30 a.m. watching some very suspicious activity going on since I got robbed and beaten on the same block less than a month ago. I saw a white male in his early-mid twenties walking South on Sheffield towards Belmont when a group of about seven black males approached him heading north on Sheffield on the East side of the street. There has been a lot of construction going on there so the view is pretty limited which makes it an easy place to rob someone. I don't know what they said to the guy but within 30 seconds he had his hands up and they emptied his pockets and walked south on Sheffield and continued past Belmont. The guy who got robbed just stood there for about a minute and then took of sprinting north on Sheffield. I immediately called the police, told them what happened, and within minutes they had squad cars up and down the block. I don't know if they caught the guys, but they certainly made an impact since more than 30 people cleared the corner and started heading north on Sheffield. Everyone just walked to Sheffield & School and lingered there for a while. I also noticed a very suspicious white Dodge Charger making rounds as well as a old Black Jeep Cherokee before the cops showed up. This block gets very dangerous EVERY NIGHT after about 1 a.m. so DO NOT WALK ALONE and try be careful people.

  • Thanks Bob, the next one I had on my calendar wasn't till December, glad you clarified.

  • I have lost all faith that the CPD in our neighborhood can protect us from anything at this point. They are now merely just the cleanup crew it seems until they get staffed properly.

Are they considering bringing back Bus Route 11 Lincoln Avenue?

Has your life or business been affected by the removal of the #11 bus route along Lincoln Avenue?

Please take a short survey (see link below) And please forward this email to all you know. It is important for our voices to be heard

Take this survey NOW:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/cta11bus

  • L

I just posted a response to your other version of this post. I want the bus back. But, there is no indication from CTA that it will come back. Our last hope was for Target (now cancelled) to pay for it. It is only about a million a year extra for it. Maybe we can ask one of the developers along Lincoln Ave. to pitch in.

  • jasper1055 Roscoe Villiage

They are not bringing it back. I'll try and find the link.

Explosion Near Oakdale?

Hi all. Did anyone else hear an extremely loud, house-rocking, thud-like explosion at about 3:10 AM this morning (Tuesday, Sept 9)? We are on the 1900 block of Oakdale in Lakeview. We were shaken awake, checked everything out, and have no sign of damage or break-in - just confusion. A moment or two later we heard sirens that sounded like they were a few blocks south (perhaps near Diversey), and then nothing again. This was a seriously powerful noise. Maybe a local transformer blew?

If anyone heard it, please comment. The mystery is messing with me! Thanks much!!

  • Checked back for date, it was the night of Aug 4 and was mentioned on EB on Aug 5th. There was another one between the Aug 4 explosion and today's mention...?

  • Flybutter 1900 block of Oakdale

Thanks for checking, Nan. What we heard was at 3:10 AM on the morning of Tuesday, August 9.

City Dough Space

Does anyone know what is happening with the City Dough space on Sheffield/Wellington? It seems like it has been closed for a while with little to no news (and I am starting to OD on Panes...).

  • I miss Pompei too. It was so popular and good. Why did they close? And is there rumor they are coming back?

  • The rumor I heard about Pompei was that the owner sold the location to DMK with the rights to still operate the location as a Pompei. Then for whatever reason they decided to close it.
