I first went to The Alley as a 20 year old kid; unsure of herself but bound to become otherwise. I bought a $99 leather biker jacket that I think they were running a sale on so I could afford it. It was heavier than hell.

I still have that jacket; and every button, scuff, and scratch on it represents the journey I took from there to here. It is a prized possession.

As my daughter navigates her road of discovery, I still go to The Alley to get her funky socks, leopard patterened shoes, and fingerless gloves (her favorite). I want her to know that she has room to be different, independent, and creative as she practices kindness, respect, and humility.

The mural being destroyed leaves me sad.

Do you have a fond memory of The Alley? Something that you look back on and smile?

Thank you all so much for the words of both kindness, and wisdom. The memories are endless, aren't they? :)

"Do not carry your credit card on you"

With the recent stick-ups in Lakeview and Lincoln Park, a police rep said in a radio interview that women shouldn't carry their credit cards in their purse. I kept wondering, where should the credit cards be carried?
I carry my cards in my wallet, I can't imagine not being without my credit card in my purse. And I don't want to put my credit card info on my cell phone for a thief to take and waive at a cashier.

dse: When Daniel Patrick Moynihan published his essay wherein the phrase "Defining Deviancy Down" became popular, we still had a fairly functional democracy in America. This is no longer the case, so my optimism about using my voice and vote to influence public policy has been replaced by pragmatism. This means it's Every Human For Him/Herself" as far as I can see. If Rahm Emanuel and Tom Tunney want to lie about crime stats while we the peeps get mugged just so they can get elected so they can run with the billionaires, it doesn't make sense to me to pretend I can waltz down Belmont or Diversey (or Clark or _____ fill in the blank__) with plugged ears and unaware of my surroundings. I'm not "Blaming the Victim" (I read that book in grad school, too)

    (I literally just heard a gunshot so I called 911 - EMMAUEL/TUNNEY: J'ACCUSE!)

anyway: It's a tragedy. But I plan on surviving. You do it your way; I'll do it mine.

Let's face facts, folks. We choose to live in a large urban environment and crime is going to happen. Lest we forget that every major city, without exception, has a crime issue. One can either accept it and take precautions to avoid becoming a victim or do nothing to prevent becoming a victim. Bottom line is this city IS much safer than it has been in the past. Lakeview was a rough neighborhood 20 years ago and some of the unsavory element remains, especially near the Belmont L stop. Nobody is blaming or shaming victims here. We are simply stating the obvious facts of big city living. Be aware of your surroundings and make choices accordingly. That's all.

This Just Burns Me!!

Last week I went to the 44th Ward alderman "meet and greet." All three candidates had 15 minutes to speak, and all answered the same 5 questions. Tom Tunney kept repeating "crime is down, crime is down" so often I thought his mantra would cause him to levitate, then I saw this article and I'm just enraged!

http://www.cwbchicago.com/2015/01/a-matter-of-trust-police-department.html

I know a lot of the crime happens later when victims have had too many cocktails, but do you feel safe walking home from a neighborhood dinner? I'm begining not too.

  • I'm less concerned about whether residents FEEL safe (which can be driven by headlines and TV stories), and more about whether residents ARE safe (which is driven by good statistics).

I am indeed concerned by stories suggesting that the data may be bad, whether by making it harder to file (on-line is good though), or reclassifying reports. In any event, I don't think that risk has changed between 2013 and 2014, and across that time period, Lakeview crime IS down 20%. Yes, it needs to go down further, but it's moving in the right direction, and we are getting more police on the streets, slowly but surely.

More police costs money -- who got their property tax bill today? Want to pay even MORE? I didn't think so.

    The sky is not falling.

  • Lynn Olejniczak Life-long Chicagoan, who loves her city.

I'm sorry, but that is just absurd. You aren't concerned if Lakeview residents "feel" safe? Why? Because it isn't a number that can be manipulated or played with?

A loss of 4 police officers in December does not equate to more police on the streets no matter how many times...

As far as your property tax statement goes, it is just so far beneath the original discussion here that the only fitting response would be, "I know you are but what am I."
    Pure nonsense.

Public Hearing on Monday, March 9 for Rise and Galleria Liquors Mixed-Use Redevelopment

A public hearing has been scheduled for the proposed mixed-use transit oriented development for 3401-09 N. Southport Avenue on Monday, March 9 at 7:00 PM at Mystic Celt.

The following is now known:
A 4-story building with retail on the first floor
33 apartments with starting rent at $1,500
6 parking spaces with one being a handicapped spot

The project will be presented by the developer to all that attend the West Lakeview Neighbors meeting. See the renderings here:

http://southportcorridorchicago.blogspot.com/2015/01/public-hearing-march-9-2015-for.html

  • RubyRed Dancer, Drummer, Cyclist

jjkenyon, Yes, it's true, there are other residential developments along the tracks, but you sure as hell won't catch me ponying up $1,500 per month for that kind of noise pollution. The "benefit" of living on the same block as Gap an Athleta isn't really that much a draw either in my opinion.

  • RubyRed, you probably didn't look at the developer's plans and elevations, the north wall facing the tracks is solid block, no windows except for a single column, which is probably a stairwell.

A double block wall will suppress nearly all the train noise.

Michael Diversey's Closed?!

Darnit. I noticed the restaurant closed. I'm a bit surprised as it was always pretty busy. Anyone know if something new is going in? I hope so. I don't like the empty spaces on Diversey right now.

They have it better in their home countries.

@ Li - about the only solution to your/my problem of which I know is to find a man dumb and desperate enough to marry me. It's rough out there for singletons, especially economically.

New Restaurant?

I just walked by the Town Hall apartments on Halsted and Addison and noticed what appears to be a new restaurant getting ready to open up in one of the retail spots for that building. Does anyone know if this is actually a new restaurant and if so what the scoop on it is, or is it perhaps some facility that is there for the tenants of the building? It seems to look like to me it may be a restaurant because it also has bar seating and the decor of the place as well.

  • Gregory Morrow Employee at Center On Halsted

Hi! That facility is part of the Center on Halsted's new Senior Center complex. That space will be used to serve senior lunches or for other senior events. The lunch program is administered as part of the City of Chicago's Golden Diner senior lunch program. The old police station itself will soon be open as part of the Senior Center, it's going to be very nice!

  • Gregory Morrow Employee at Center On Halsted

Addenda: the Senior Lunch program at Town Hall is not just for building residents, it is for all neighborhood seniors 60 and up. There is another Senior Lunch served at the Presbyterian church down the street, at Addison and Broadway.

  • KTL

The thumbs up and thumbs down are partisan opinion and no doubt this is a teacher's union website. Totally useless unless you are a public union supporter, which I am not. This actually makes me like Tunney.

  • The facts there are probably accurate, on how they voted, but as KTL notes, the thumbs up/down is whether "Grassroots Illinois Action" (whomever they are) think it was a good vote. They're against charter schools, yet clearly, charter schools markedly outperform traditional schools by any measure (except "preservation of highly-paid union jobs for bad teachers", maybe).

Possible injured Cat (Sunny) Barry/Lakewood/ Nelson/ Racine

We're searching for one of our feral cats that is possibly injured in the neighborhood. He was last seen on Barry, west of Racine, and evaded our attempt to capture him. He's a medium sized gray cat with his winter coat, so he's quite furry. He's more skittish than friendly, as he a member of our working cat community hosted at 1232 Nelson. Please post any sightings to this thread as we're concerned for his wellbeing.
I also apologize if we caused any concern with flash lights shining in yards and side through ways. Thank you for your concerns - Tim

My alley (between Addison and Eddy) is a tank trap when there's deep snow--last winter I got stuck three times and had to be pushed out by helpful neighbors. (Thanks, guys!) When the snow gets packed down the alley becomes two ruts where wheels run with a ridge in the middle where cars' undercarriages have leveled and compacted the snow. Last year this froze like a rock and couldn't be moved, even with an ice chopper.
Tonight I had to help a neighbor who had got stuck trying to leave his garage and cross the ruts and the ridge. I'm way too old for this kind of stunt.
What we need is a snowplow to break up the ridge and clear the alley. Does anyone know someone who has a Jeep or truck with a snowplow who we could hire to plow the alley? I'm hoping some of my neighbors would chip in to help pay for this.
It's obnoxious to have to worry every time I leave or return to my garage. Thanks for your help.

  • Hey there. I have a snow plow. I can offer you a great price give me a call or text (224)246-6762 Jose

  • Any news agencies such as yours conducting their own?

  • Noel Montenegro Photojournalist for NBC News

I cant speak for the other stations. I dont think we are. We dont have access to the legal tools to find out what people are really concerned about. Mainly if the owner of the building is the owner and installer of the recording equipment. And if the owner of the building has anymore recording equipment in use in any illegal way. That would require warrants for search. Police have to do their due diligence and burn some good old fashion shoe leather.
