Planes too low by Irving park

Anyone knows of a petition to change the ridiculous pathways of planes above
North center/ west Lakeview.
I'm filling noise complaint online as many times as I can but unsure it will do something.
When you have to stop conversing in your patio because of a plane above you is making too much noise, it is a bad sign!
Anyone else? Advice? Ideas?

  • CS, I understand your frustration but I'm going to be upfront with you and tell you that you're not going to get anywhere. They're not changing the flight paths. They just spent millions analyzing the flight paths and then reconfiguring said flight paths based upon the analyses. You should file complaints. You should complain to your Alderperson, Mayor, etc. Just know that you're battling a million/billion dollar entity and they're not likely to back down. Aviation, especially ORD, is huge business.

I happened to be on my deck a few times this summer and literally had to stop talking as plane noise was so loud. I sent filed online complain for noise on 311site every time. I did not write down notes to self with days and time. It seemed random, though I'm sure there is a pattern given nature of flights paths. Obviously I work and have a family so can't write down these every time:) I'm very close to the Mayer private guards house so maybe there something to be said :) and yes I'm an optimistic !

What's everyone paying for Comcast (or other) cable/internet service?

Given Comcast's less than transparent pricing, I'm wondering what everyone else is paying. I negotiated Blast internet, Digital Preferred with HD, HBO, and Steampix for approx. $120/mo. We have one cable box. No DVR. No rented modem/router. How about you??

  • A&K

    Comcast
    $55 a month including taxes
    50Mbps down, 10 Mbps up
Super basic cable we don't use
    We own our equipment

Comcast has to come out again Friday. We are only getting 1.5Mbps up instead of 10. It should be higher with digital overhead factored in. They claim it's our equipment. Of course it's not them. It never is. I will keep you posted, our modem is about a year old. Maybe it's going bad. Maybe.

  • Irving Bark Fined and ticketed to death

I forgot to mention I own my own modem, you can buy one off CL for $20

Books to Donate/Sell

Hello! We have a few boxes of paperback books to donate/sell. Mostly adult and some young adult, fiction and non-fiction. We were thinking of maybe doing a book sale and donating the money. Or would it be more worthwhile to just donate the books to the local library or charity?
Recommendations/thoughts/suggestions appreciated! Thanks!

Dog Walkers

I have noticed a great increase in the amount of doggy poop in our neighborhood. It is everywhere! Please, please, please pick up after your dog-poop everywhere is like ringing the dinner bell for rats. I know someone posted about this a few months ago, but I think it bears repeating.

911 Response Times

I hope that no one in our neighborhood needs police support in the early hours on Friday and Saturday nights, as our district staffing is well below what weekend activity suggests is needed.

http://crimeinboystown.blogspot.com/2014/08/game-of-moans-rough-weekend-brings.html

"Our police district entered "Radio Assignments Pending" (RAP) status at least three times this weekend, forcing dispatchers to stack up piles of 911 calls until officers became available to respond.

Police response for a man who got beat up and robbed on Belmont this morning took almost an hour. "

  • d3...help me understand the difference. If I'm hearing 75% of calls dispatched as non-emergencies...does that mean even lower-scale non-emergencies are taking up their phone time but not being dispatched? Not sure I follow.

  • I called 911 a few weeks ago to report people breaking into cars and it rang and rang and rang. I let it ring for 2-3 minutes three separate times before someone finally picked up. By that time the thieves were long gone.

Crime is down because no one can get through to dispatch and when they do the cops are backed up and won't or can't take a report, if they respond to the call at all.

We need more police in 019, plain and simple.

Anyone ever successfully file a noise complaint?

A few of us on here live or work next to constructions sites that like to get started before 8am. In the case of private projects, (those not run by the city) most of these folks don't have permits to work before 8am, but do anyways.

What I want to know, is, have you ever successfully filed a complaint such that the contractor or developer was actually cited? According to the noise ordinance, fines can be $300/500/$1000 per incident.

I've called the police numerous times on a number of building projects that start at 6:30 or 7:00 in the morning. They came out once and spoke to the site foreman, but that was months ago. No phone-call I've made since then has resulted in any change or any action. Today, I've given my name and phone number and asked to speak to the officers when they arrive on site. But, now that it's past 8am, I wonder if they'll do anything. I did capture video of the construction going on before 8.

Childcare recommendations Lakeview

I have a collegue in a search for quality daycare in the lakeview/wriggleyville area. Recommendations needed :)

  • My daughter goes to Twinkling Stars on Belmont near Damen. Not sure if it's too far but its definitely worth the trip. We have been so happy with our decision to send her there. I highly recommend.

  • Matt 10-year Lakeview resident

My wife and I have both our daughters at Little Green Treehouse on Ashland. We have been thrilled with our experience and recommend it to anyone in the area. School-parent communication is great, the kids love the facility and their teachers, and most importantly we don't worry a bit about the level of care they are receiving while we are at work. Please feel free to reach out directly for more information.

We're not a sports bar at all -- a craft beer bar -- but we have a private room downstairs that holds up to 20 people with free wifi, a 42" TV, private bathrooms and chalkboard walls. Plus, you get to choose from over 300 beers -- and you can bring in or order in your own food.

We've hosted a few drafts already and would love to host you. Feel free to contact Paul, the owner, at chicagolakeview@beermiscuous.com or 855-450-2337

Parking ticket for Street Sweeping

Did anyone else get a parking ticket on Barry between Southport and Lakewood this morning on 8/15? I got one, but I'm pretty sure I didn't see any signs up at 8:20am this morning when I left for work, plus there were a lot of cars still on our side of the street. I got home this afternoon and there was a ticket on the car.

  • Ed H. 5 year Lakeview resident

I thought there were signs posted that explained the schedule, there are on my street. Something like "street cleaning every 2nd Thursday of the month."

  • L

Not all areas of LV have the signs or the regular cleaning schedule.

Anyone want to share the good, bad and ugly for Pride Parade 2014? Also, what should be changed for next year?

    what was at montrose harbor?

pretty sure there have been plenty of documented guns and incidents downtown surrounding various festivals over the years, one year at taste of Chicago alone there were multiple.

people shoot people all the time and disappear into the crowd, very, very, very few (single % digits) shootings in this city lead to anything at all. So that's not really that unusual that he could disappear at Montrose, it's a circumstance of how our police and justice system operate.

Looking for recommendation for radiologist

I had a wonderful radiologist who did my mammogram in her office and then could do any ultrasound/MRI followup during the same visit and get me all the results while I waited. Unfortunately, she has retired and I'm looking for a radiologist who has a similar set up. I have been to Lynne Sage and really hate that setup so trying to find a smaller office environment. Anyone have a good radiologist for mammograms and eventually bone density scans.

  • I have a great guy that I see for my mammograms: Dr. Farag at Diagnostic Imaging Specialists of Chicago, 60 E. Delaware Pl, Ste 1410, 312-867-9000. He's in the Bloomingdale's Building on Michigan Ave. They do the mammograms, etc., right there & then go over the results with you. I'm not sure if he does bone density scans, though. Good luck!

  • I felt disconnected at Lynn Sage, too. Try calling Shannon Sikkila at Swedish Covenant Hospital to help see your options. She is a nurse practitioner and women's care coordinator. Obviously, it this not a small office, but I think you can have all that done in 1 day, if you request it or need it. Her direct number is 773-293-4178. Good luck!

  • Thanks yellowdawg and K.Wit. Yellowdawg, I saw Dr. Farag's partner, Dr. Werber for years and loved her but she retired. I guess I should give Dr. Farag a try.

The American Indian Center, Inc. (AIC) continues to be a primary cultural and community resource for nearly 65,000 American Indians in the greater Chicago metropolitan area. Chicago is the third largest urban Native American population in the country with over 100 tribal nations represented. Since 1953, AIC continues to:
    •Advance the academic progress of our youth;
    •Create health access opportunities for our elders;
•Provide food and hot meals to seniors and families; and
•Culturally educate, share and engage schools and businesses through professional development for the desired attainment of cultural understanding

Providing successful direct service programs for 60 years does come with obstacles. The AIC is continuously challenged and focused to address community concerns that include poverty, hunger and high school drop-out issues. As we embark on our 60th year, we are grateful to our donors, volunteers and dedicated staff for sustaining vital work that continues to help so many families in need. Your investment dollars will go a long way in supporting our programs.

  • Stephen Boisvert Lakeview pedestrian

FYI - if you itemize your taxes clothing donations to registered charities can bring you some decent tax relief. I pick up a receipt form ahead of time and fill it out with values from the Salvation Army donated items value guide so I can drop stuff off and get it signed.

Donate some clothes and save on taxes. Win-Win.

For most things you get more by charity tax break than you will get from places like Plato's Cave.

Nintendo Wii Available to Donate

We have a Nintendo Wii we no longer use that we'd like to donate to a good cause. Does anyone know any after school programs or kid's groups that might benefit from something like this? We're open to donating it to anyone who could benefit from it's use!

  • Hi there! What a great gesture! I think you can donate items like these to a organization called Mercy Home for Boys right here in the city. However, I know for a fact that the wonderful volunteers at Howard Brown's Broadway Youth Drop-in Center would LOVE this. They do great work with homeless youth and the kids they serve really enjoy games like these. Have a wonderful day!

  • yes its called my house

  • I am heading up the kids garage sale for St. Bens. All proceeds go towards the school. Would love to take the Wii off your hands and will provide a tax letter for you.

Agree about the speed limit. People will ALWAYS go 5-10 over. If this is a real safety issue, lower the limit to 25 MPH. I think the issue of pedestrian vs car safety is completely overblown. If cars are running red lights, they might want to take a look at their yellow time, which is undoubtedly the shortest in the country. I've driven in almost every state, and Chicago lights are without a doubt, setup to trap people. Rahm doesn't want people driving in his city. He wants them using buses and trains, which provides additional revenue to the city, as opposed to private parking garages. This is not the way to go about looking for additional funds. If we're this desperate, I don't think Chicago is too far behind Detroit in asking for a city bailout.

Car broken into

Last Saturday night our car was broken in to in our driveway. We had just come from a family party and the kids were asleep and in the commotion of getting them into bed I left my diaper bag with my wallet and cash inside. They took all of of it. Yesterday I realized that our family video camera was also in the diaper bag-it has all of our daughter" firsts" on it- birthday, crawling, walking and all the other happy events of the past year. I know it's a long shot but if anyone comes across it I would love just the memory card back.

  • Someone broke into our car on around Barry and Lakewood. Nothing was taken, but now I'm paranoid that maybe there was info on my apartment in their.

  • Thoughts in Lincoln Square 9 Year Chicagoan - Tech Startupper

Put out an email to the local pawn shops and tell them you'll pay for the memory card, they can keep the camera no questions asked. Worth a shot.
