Hey Guys,

On May 2nd, I was moving a bunch of stuff back home and I decided to stop by a friends place about 11 PM that night (Friday).

The Van, a Mercury Villager 1995 which was the vehicle I was driving, was parked on the corner of Lakeshore Drive and Brompton. It was full of my belongings including a Guitar, Amp and a bunch of sneakers. Because of the fact that I parked on lakeshore drive in front of that condo building (Where my friend lives), I had a sense of security so I fell asleep. Unfortunately, I woke up the next day around 6AM to only walk outside and see that my Van was missing. I looked everywhere, checked every pound and had no luck what so ever. I was hoping that the city moved it so I waited at Recreation drive to see if my van would arrive and it didn't. Like an Idiot, I should've just went home and unloaded but after a long day of moving, I was done. Lesson Learned? Absolutely but if anyone could help with any leads, that would be greatly appreciated. Attached is a photo of the Van.

Be careful, Lakeview is starting to become a hot spot for shady business. I went to a few buildings to see if they saw anything and they all shared stories of auto thefts, break ins around that area.

  • Shelly Lifelong suburbanite, now in South Lakeview.

Oscar, I'm glad you already reported it stolen to authorities and have been checking sites! I was curious since you waited almost 4 months to post on here! Good luck!

  • Philip Independent Business owner ,47th. ward since 1968

It's probably too late now , but if you could have checked the buildings security cameras or others in the neighborhood you may have seen if it was towed by away possibly not by the CPD. Some car thieves use tow vehicle's . Big story on the news a while back about a scrap yard found with many stolen cars on property being brought in by private pirates , I mean tow trucks. Security cameras are everywhere .

Hard Candy Source?

I've recently developed a liking for hard candy. Do you know of a store that offers a good variety? I mostly shop at Jewel and Whole Foods, and they seem to concentrate on chocolates and chewy candies, with just a sampling of hard candies. Now I'm interested in branching out a bit.

  • AMLC of Chicago

Lolli&pop at the Fashion Outlet mall near O'Hare is AMAZING!! They have different rooms of candy- a chocolate room, gummy candy jelly beans plus imported candy and retro candy.

  • Dollar Tree a lot of old people candy there.. since ya like hard candy

Christmas in August (almost Sept.)

I have 20 rolls of Christmas wrapping paper (mostly unopened) that I am never going to use. Does anyone need it? Or does anyone know of a charity or church group who might want it. Thanks!

  • Gloria P. 22-year resident of Roscoe Village

Hi Claire, If you don't take it to the school I can use it. Every Christmas season at my office we choose a couple of needy families to purchase gifts for. If we save money on gift wrap we'll have more money to go toward gifts for these families. Please e-mail me if you want me to pickup the paper. Thank you!

  • That would be great if you could pick it up, it's yours! Please let me know what would be a good time for you. Thanks!!

This is my shameless plug of a local business but its honest. Try and stop by when you can. Its worth it. They are near Cooper's restaurant. across from the Wit Theater and Theatre 773.

Bikes Stolen from Closed Garage!

Hello all, Mine and my husband's bikes were stolen last night from our closed/locked, private garage which opens to alley. We've filed a police report, listed it on chicago.stolenbike.org, bikeindex.org, and posted to FB, Twitter, Find Stolen Bikes (Chicago), SBR Chicago.
New Men's Cannondale Synapse 6 Tiagra 2013 Black Road Bike (black frame, white lettering, drop handlebars, clipless pedals, front/rear LED lights)
Women's Trek 7.5 FX WSD 2010 Satin Cherry Red Hybrid Bike (red frame, white lettering, flat handlebars, rear fender only, front/rear LED lights, bell on left handle, missing wheel reflectors)
Please keep an eye out for these two bikes and message me with news/advice! Thank you so much!

Bike thefts seem to be picking up (or at least getting more brazen) in the neighborhood - my Fuji SL1 Pro (red/black/white) was stolen on 8/8 from behind a locked gate in our back ally (Surf & Broadway). More than 1 person must have been involved to jump the gate and lift the bike up and over it. The bike is never parked there and was stolen between 9 PM and 9 AM friday night - someone was clearly out looking for items to steal - with flashlights looking into locked and gated areas. I filed a police report, stolen bike registry (local and national), etc. I wish the police had the ability to pay more attention to bike thefts - this bike was worth more than what I sold my past used car for. It's grand theft. It also seems to go with the broken windows theory... if they can get away with bike thefts or car breakins on a regular basis, what's next?

  • Deb

We have had our bikes and our kids bikes stolen a few times. We now lock our bikes inside our garage. It was a bit of a hassle installing a bike rack into the wall of our garage and it's a pain to have to lock our bike each time we use it but we've gone a couple years now without our bikes being stolen.

So, what's going happening on Waveland and Sheffield outside Wrigley?

Last week, they put up barricades along the sidewalks on the west side of Sheffield and the south side of Waveland. And they took out a lane of parking on both streets, too, redrawing lanes for vehicular traffic. The "no parking" signs posted only go through Sept. 30.

Anybody have any idea what's going on here?

  • God, I hope that as customers of those utilities we won't be the ones footing the bill for this work. This cost better be paid for by the Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs said Tuesday that the City of Chicago and utility companies have begun work outside Wrigley Field in preparation for the stadium’s renovation..

Sheffield Avenue will be closed from Thursday to Sunday for excavation and an installation of a new water main. On game days next month, the parkway on the east side of the street and one lane of traffic will be closed starting at 8 a.m. until two hours prior to the start of the game. The same closure rules apply when Wrigley Field hosts a concert on Sept. 13.

The work will include the relocation of underground water, sewer and gas lines. The team said the utility companies don’t anticipate any major service disruptions.

The Cubs have said they plan to begin work on expanding the bleachers after the season ends.

Bunny on the loose

I saw what is believed to be a domestic rabbit in the Ravenswood alley between Grace and Waveland last night around 8:00 P.M.. He was slightly closer to Waveland cruising around the trash and recycle bins. He was a caramel/butterscotch color. Please be on the lookout and help get to safety at Red Door Animal Shelter.

  • There are rabbits all over the place

I see them more often than squirrels these days

Thanks Louise! Being a bunny owner myself I know how ignorant some people are when they adopt one thinking they are an "easy" pet and when they find out they need as much attention as other pets they think they can just let them loose. I adopted a rabbit form...

"You are absolutely right! Everyone is getting behind the new principal.

On Saturday, August 23rd, about 70 people; neighbors, parents, grandparents, teachers, students, community members (including a dozen from Graceland West, the immediate neighborhood) and leaders from several other neighborhood organizations, the LVHS LSC, Alderman Pawar and others joined Principal Scott Grens for the Lake View High School Beautification Day. Rep. Ann Williams and Friends of Ameya Pawar (PAC) donated the paint. Lake View Partners, the newly launched non-profit to support Lake View and Grow 47, Alderman Pawar's initiative for schools sponsored the event.

Volunteers were organized into small teams and then painted the interior front entrance, library and several other rooms, moved in new equipment and furniture, cleaned all the lockers, removed any remaining tape left over from the prior school year, washed windows, moved landscaping stones and more. There were about 20 major projects. The school was already gleaming when volunteers started and the finishing touches just made everything even more welcoming for students, faculty and administrators.

Everyone, students, faculty, staff, neighbors, elected officials worked together for four hours then met up for lunch. Great effort. Great results. Great community teamwork.

A BIG THANKS to everyone who helped.

Thanks also to those who participated in the LVHS Architectural Tour on August 3rd".

Basement Flooding-report problems to Alderman Tunnery's office @773.525.6034

If you are like me, and have experienced basement flooding this summer, please be sure you are reporting the problem to Alderman Tunney's office @ 773.525.6034. I have talked to one of the Alderman's staff, and he is working to address the issue, but needs to know which other homes in Lakeview are also getting flooded.

Thanks!

  • Any idea what they can do?

  • It depends on what is causing the issue. There are some capital improvement projects slated for the next few years that will increase sewer capacity in Lakeview. The more people that call with flooding complaints, the higher the capital projects will be prioritized.

They can also point you to city resources and tips for small improvements that a property owner can make until the larger capital improvements are complete.

Hawthorne School - Field

Does anyone know if there are groups or organizations that are allowed to reserve the entire field next to the school? We were there playing with our children a few weekends ago when a huge group of people playing soccer completely overtook the entire field and essentially pushed us out.

There are city leagues that have the field reserved for games on some nights. Also youth leagues during the day on some weekends.

Moving is an option and, believe it or not, there are nicer (and less expensive) places to truly live. I think those of us who have been here for 20+ years notice the increases in crime, crowding, increase of big box and decrease of small businesses, more generic look to our neighborhood, ugly McMansion$ taking up full lots by building companie$ that have no respect for neighbors and surrounding houses (I too have cracks in my walls, windows that are compromised), roads in constant construction to build Islands(that cause traffic nightmares), then fill them with ugly, dying flower$, watering system$, and constant upkeep that cost the taxpayer $, the $elling off of our parking f(or 75 years!) and the devastating blow to small businesses. And parking ticket$ and $peeding ticket$. The thinning of major arteries(streets along Irving) so we can feel like wse are entering "a $lice of heaven" when we squeeze and almost side-swipe other car to get to our homes. I feel unsafe, overtaxed, under-policed and not protected, overcrowded, overlooked, under-served, and unfulfilled Most people feel the same way so it's hard to support each other as communities should when a large majority are struggling in so many ways and living in an environment where most are feeling financially strained and unable to meet their family's needs). Feeling crowded and squeezed out takes the happiness out of living here. I was in my car at a stop light and watched the facial expressions of those that passed by. Most had visible tension as they were on their way. How long do we want to stay here as we age and see our city, the friendliness, helpfulness, neighborhoods deteriorate while all cost$ go up...in the name of profit...I mean growth? The little guy's getting it again as usual.
Saturday rant from my "slice of heaven!" :-)

The air noise is a change, the EL and Metra noise is not. People purchased homes knowing the noise they were getting into when they bought near the CTA lines. When a bunch of, FAA, politicians and O'Hare board members do a deal that affects hundreds of thousands of people and basically lie about the affect it is unethical and flat wrong.

    http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2014/08/08/activists-accuse-city-and-faa-of-conspiring-to-hide-impact-of-ohare-noise/

There are rumors that some city officials worked on this deal to move flight patterns away from their homes!

My fiancé lives in Edison Park. We can no longer have the windows open, we can not sit on the deck and basically do anything that requires talking outside. The affect on the property value will be astronomical. Residents up there are furious. They feel the Alderman did nothing to represent them at all. There is a movement to vote her out and it looks like it will happen.

So what can we do? Not really sure. Every resident in every neighborhood affected should petition for a property tax reduction as a number of neighborhoods and residents have done and won. Build a committee? Hire an attorney? I mean what can we do? Once again the residents and tax payers were lied to and (to quote Deputy Dog) "the little guy's getting it again as usual."

What's everyone paying for Comcast (or other) cable/internet service?

Given Comcast's less than transparent pricing, I'm wondering what everyone else is paying. I negotiated Blast internet, Digital Preferred with HD, HBO, and Steampix for approx. $120/mo. We have one cable box. No DVR. No rented modem/router. How about you??
