Looking for an in-home petsitter for several nights

I'm looking for an in-home petsitter for my dog for a few upcoming trips. I've used a few services in the area and they've just been okay. There was one in particular with which I wasn't at all happy. I came home to all of my windows being open with the AC on, a sink full of filthy dishes and doubts about whether my dog was properly looked after. Lack of communication and general flakiness have been problems too. My dog is a very well behaved twenty pound mutt. He's an easy dog. I'm an easy owner (in more than one way!). We're near the Southport corridor. Please let me know if you have a petsitter you adore. Thank you!

  • I do dogwalking and house sitting. I have references available for the asking
    My number is 773-663-6868

  • We love Fancy Paws! They will come live in your house at very reasonable prices. They even sent videos and pics on the regular while we were away. www.fancypawsworld.com or call Chris at (312) 404-4698.

Books to Donate/Sell

Hello! We have a few boxes of paperback books to donate/sell. Mostly adult and some young adult, fiction and non-fiction. We were thinking of maybe doing a book sale and donating the money. Or would it be more worthwhile to just donate the books to the local library or charity?
Recommendations/thoughts/suggestions appreciated! Thanks!

  • sue

I work for Mrs. Murphy & Sons Irish Bistro and we have the World's Smallest Library in our lobby. It works like this: anyone is free to take a book at any time but, under an honor system, is expected to either bring it, or another book back at some point. This open system has worked surprisingly well and we are always open to book donations. In addition, once in a while, we do BookSwaps, after which we take leftover books to OpenBooks or other literacy programs.

  • If you have the time, take them to Uncharted Books at 2630 North Milwaukee. The owner might take a few off your hands and give you in-store credit for another book that catches your eye. Donate the rest of them; you won't get much $ from selling them on your own. Another option besides those mentioned above is the Newberry Library who run an annual book fair. http://www.newberry.org/book-fair-donations

What's everyone paying for Comcast (or other) cable/internet service?

Given Comcast's less than transparent pricing, I'm wondering what everyone else is paying. I negotiated Blast internet, Digital Preferred with HD, HBO, and Steampix for approx. $120/mo. We have one cable box. No DVR. No rented modem/router. How about you??

  • A&K

D3 basically yes it is. It doesn't include any channels you actually want. It is indeed a sham. Cable has been losing customer base on cable because people don't want it as much anymore. So they offer internet that people want but you have to take the tv service. That way it reflects an increase in new cable subscribers. Which in fact is part of the sham.

  • Started with RCN for $35 a month for 10 MBPS. It goes up $5 a year. I only had a problem once and it was resolved before a technician came by. Great service. It never is down.

Planes too low by Irving park

Anyone knows of a petition to change the ridiculous pathways of planes above
North center/ west Lakeview.
I'm filling noise complaint online as many times as I can but unsure it will do something.
When you have to stop conversing in your patio because of a plane above you is making too much noise, it is a bad sign!
Anyone else? Advice? Ideas?

  • Not to sound unsympathetic but I doubt that one of the world's busiest airports will change its flight approach patterns because of a few noise complaints. I also doubt the the City will re-route the 100 yr. old elevated train. Welcome to life in the City.

I lived there a couple years, but could not take the noise. Tho my neighbors were wonderful people. I like Andersonville much better. :-)

Debating if I should call 311 - car abandonment maybe?

There is car at the end of our street that has 2 flat back tires. I swear it hasn't moved in about 2 weeks. It was there last month, with the same 2 back tires blown out, and then it disappeared for a week and now it's back. I feel bad, but it feels like that person is using that spot as their own personal space. Should I call 311?

  • d3 NOH

yes be sure to report the flat tires when calling--If it has flat tires that gets a much more immediate response than if it doesn't...

  • Yes, I would. And mention the flat tires.

Dog Walkers

I have noticed a great increase in the amount of doggy poop in our neighborhood. It is everywhere! Please, please, please pick up after your dog-poop everywhere is like ringing the dinner bell for rats. I know someone posted about this a few months ago, but I think it bears repeating.

  • Agree! Every time I now my front lawn, I have to walk the yard first and recently saw an increase in rats in my alley. As a dog owner myself, these people are giving us a bad wrap.

911 Response Times

I hope that no one in our neighborhood needs police support in the early hours on Friday and Saturday nights, as our district staffing is well below what weekend activity suggests is needed.

http://crimeinboystown.blogspot.com/2014/08/game-of-moans-rough-weekend-brings.html

"Our police district entered "Radio Assignments Pending" (RAP) status at least three times this weekend, forcing dispatchers to stack up piles of 911 calls until officers became available to respond.

Police response for a man who got beat up and robbed on Belmont this morning took almost an hour. "

  • d3...help me understand the difference. If I'm hearing 75% of calls dispatched as non-emergencies...does that mean even lower-scale non-emergencies are taking up their phone time but not being dispatched? Not sure I follow.

  • I called 911 a few weeks ago to report people breaking into cars and it rang and rang and rang. I let it ring for 2-3 minutes three separate times before someone finally picked up. By that time the thieves were long gone.

Crime is down because no one can get through to dispatch and when they do the cops are backed up and won't or can't take a report, if they respond to the call at all.

We need more police in 019, plain and simple.

Anyone ever successfully file a noise complaint?

A few of us on here live or work next to constructions sites that like to get started before 8am. In the case of private projects, (those not run by the city) most of these folks don't have permits to work before 8am, but do anyways.

What I want to know, is, have you ever successfully filed a complaint such that the contractor or developer was actually cited? According to the noise ordinance, fines can be $300/500/$1000 per incident.

I've called the police numerous times on a number of building projects that start at 6:30 or 7:00 in the morning. They came out once and spoke to the site foreman, but that was months ago. No phone-call I've made since then has resulted in any change or any action. Today, I've given my name and phone number and asked to speak to the officers when they arrive on site. But, now that it's past 8am, I wonder if they'll do anything. I did capture video of the construction going on before 8.

Childcare recommendations Lakeview

I have a collegue in a search for quality daycare in the lakeview/wriggleyville area. Recommendations needed :)

  • My daughter goes to Twinkling Stars on Belmont near Damen. Not sure if it's too far but its definitely worth the trip. We have been so happy with our decision to send her there. I highly recommend.

  • Matt 10-year Lakeview resident

My wife and I have both our daughters at Little Green Treehouse on Ashland. We have been thrilled with our experience and recommend it to anyone in the area. School-parent communication is great, the kids love the facility and their teachers, and most importantly we don't worry a bit about the level of care they are receiving while we are at work. Please feel free to reach out directly for more information.

Parking ticket for Street Sweeping

Did anyone else get a parking ticket on Barry between Southport and Lakewood this morning on 8/15? I got one, but I'm pretty sure I didn't see any signs up at 8:20am this morning when I left for work, plus there were a lot of cars still on our side of the street. I got home this afternoon and there was a ticket on the car.

  • Ed H. 5 year Lakeview resident

I thought there were signs posted that explained the schedule, there are on my street. Something like "street cleaning every 2nd Thursday of the month."

    what was at montrose harbor?

pretty sure there have been plenty of documented guns and incidents downtown surrounding various festivals over the years, one year at taste of Chicago alone there were multiple.

people shoot people all the time and disappear into the crowd, very, very, very few (single % digits) shootings in this city lead to anything at all. So that's not really that unusual that he could disappear at Montrose, it's a circumstance of how our police and justice system operate.

Looking for recommendation for radiologist

I had a wonderful radiologist who did my mammogram in her office and then could do any ultrasound/MRI followup during the same visit and get me all the results while I waited. Unfortunately, she has retired and I'm looking for a radiologist who has a similar set up. I have been to Lynne Sage and really hate that setup so trying to find a smaller office environment. Anyone have a good radiologist for mammograms and eventually bone density scans.

  • I have a great guy that I see for my mammograms: Dr. Farag at Diagnostic Imaging Specialists of Chicago, 60 E. Delaware Pl, Ste 1410, 312-867-9000. He's in the Bloomingdale's Building on Michigan Ave. They do the mammograms, etc., right there & then go over the results with you. I'm not sure if he does bone density scans, though. Good luck!

  • I felt disconnected at Lynn Sage, too. Try calling Shannon Sikkila at Swedish Covenant Hospital to help see your options. She is a nurse practitioner and women's care coordinator. Obviously, it this not a small office, but I think you can have all that done in 1 day, if you request it or need it. Her direct number is 773-293-4178. Good luck!

  • Thanks yellowdawg and K.Wit. Yellowdawg, I saw Dr. Farag's partner, Dr. Werber for years and loved her but she retired. I guess I should give Dr. Farag a try.

The American Indian Center, Inc. (AIC) continues to be a primary cultural and community resource for nearly 65,000 American Indians in the greater Chicago metropolitan area. Chicago is the third largest urban Native American population in the country with over 100 tribal nations represented. Since 1953, AIC continues to:
    •Advance the academic progress of our youth;
    •Create health access opportunities for our elders;
•Provide food and hot meals to seniors and families; and
•Culturally educate, share and engage schools and businesses through professional development for the desired attainment of cultural understanding

Providing successful direct service programs for 60 years does come with obstacles. The AIC is continuously challenged and focused to address community concerns that include poverty, hunger and high school drop-out issues. As we embark on our 60th year, we are grateful to our donors, volunteers and dedicated staff for sustaining vital work that continues to help so many families in need. Your investment dollars will go a long way in supporting our programs.

FYI - if you itemize your taxes clothing donations to registered charities can bring you some decent tax relief. I pick up a receipt form ahead of time and fill it out with values from the Salvation Army donated items value guide so I can drop stuff off and get it signed.

Donate some clothes and save on taxes. Win-Win.
