Referendum about proposed CTA "Flyover" on Nov. 4 Ballot

The Referendum: Has the CTA sufficiently justified the $320 million proposed Brown Line Flyover project and its impact on local homes and businesses?

Vote NO to insist the CTA let the community know what they plan before it’s too late to stop them.

The CTA Belmont El ‘flyover’ will waste $320 million++. Save Central Lakeview, a thriving restaurant, shopping, business district, from being ruined by the unnecessary Brown Line ‘flyover.’ Don’t let them waste your money, ruin your neighborhood.

The flyover will swing wide over two blocks of Clark Street, turning a large chunk
of this essential street into an under-El wasteland. Many commercial buildings and homes will be destroyed. Those still standing will be left facing under-El emptiness and an overhead train.

The CTA ‘findings’ are false, their drawings intentionally misleading.
Plans have NOT been finalized; please speak up for Lakeview before it’s too late.

More trains do run during rush hours, and more trains, train cars, or people leaving a few minutes earlier for their commute to make their connections (if they are not doing so already) is a much better and cheaper solution to the problem. Which makes more sense: a third of a Billion dollars spent on more track and structures while also destroying 16 buildings, parking lots, people's homes and businesses in those buildings displaced OR the more practical and inexpensive solutions mentioned above?

I disagree. This administration is putting people on a road diet, you have to fix public transit before that will work. 16 buildings is no big deal in the big picture, and these people will both be compensated and there will be some structure going up to replace many of them. How many of the "homes" are underwater condos, btw? There aren't any SFHs being displaced by this as far as I'm aware.

This is much bigger than 16 people's homes, it's the entire infrastructure of public transit serving the northern portion of Chicago. That's 16x62500+.

"status quo" would cost the GDP more than this project will over the life of infrastructure.

Chicago Speed Camera Map: watch out for one by Lane Tech High School

https://mapsengine.google.com/map/viewer?mid=zDIlbNW6Kzv4.kWRTNheTjAho

Just an fyi, speed cameras in school zones are set if you go over 20 mph. Watch out for one at 2501 W. Addison by Lane Tech High School. The normal speed limit is 30 mph and the cameras run longer than expected (6am - 9pm?) not just during school hours. $100 ticket.

  • Dang, I didn't know they now took speeding violations from the front?! What are times of the reduced 20mph speed?

  • There's also one just south of Belmont/Lincoln/Ashland between the Petco and Boston Market. i just noticed the sign today. As others have mentioned, it's 20 MPH. I *think the sign said it's enforced during school hours when children are present. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. 20 MPH is SO slow. Combine the school zones with all of the the slow zones because of city parks and you'll be at a crawl on many busy thoroughfares.

27 Magazine Holders

I have 27 magazine holders/cases I'd like to give away, preferably to a charity. I know that I can drop them off at one of many local charities, but I'd prefer to give them to a charity that is going to use them. Do you know of one?

Please follow up with Dorothy at 773.285-9600 on this fine offer for magazine holders.

Bus Shelter on Broadway and Sheridan

Does anyone know what happened to the Bus shelter on the corner of Broadway and Sheridan? I drove by it this morning and the glass was shattered.

  • My guess would be a car ran into it. I've seen that happen several times at other bus shelters. Once on Division and Western I was almost hit by a car that took down the whole shelter. Be careful in those things.

Memory care home for dementia - least expensive in the area?

Sorry, to be so direct about a sensitive subject but memory care is way expensive and my family has to budget the money available very closely as there are two people involved. Right now they are paying $7,000.00 a month for two and, while that is a very good price, they are living out of state and, though its a very nice facility, they beg hourly to come back to the Chicago area.. Its impossible to get costs online. Thanks very much for any information.

We just moved my mother- in-law into Sunrise of Lincoln Park, at 2710 N. Clark. It is about between $5000-$6000 per month. I'm not sure what it is for a couple. It is an amazing place with a focus on memory care. It is worth checking out for your parents.
It would be nice to have them close by.

Uptown’s Proposed Shared Street at Argyle: How ADDING Uncertainty Can Make Our Side Streets Safer

Southport, I'm wondering if you read the article referenced above?

This is not a park, nor is it becoming a park. It's a street that's being shared by cars, pedestrians & bikes. The city will continue to be responsible for street cleaning and snow plowing. Presumably shop owners will continue to be responsible for shoving the "sidewalk" (albeit one that's less clearly defined) in front of their building.

And fire lanes? To the best of my knowledge, we don't have fire lanes on Chicago streets? (It's my understanding that fire lanes are typically on private property, not public streets.) Or are you referring to the yellow curb in front of fire hydrants? No reason why they can't mark the street near the fire hydrant to indicate that parking is prohibited.

What's going on in Boystown?

These things all occurred during normal weekday hours. It's starting to make me uncomfortable even walking down that corridor, and I've never felt that way before.

Has anyone else noticed a lot of weird going ons over there?

I am an affordable housing activist who was evicted from the Chateau Hotel last June along with about 140 other elderly, people with disabilities, veterans, and working poor Chateau Hotel tenants. I hope that all Lakeview/Uptown area residents are noticing that the closing the Ambers SRO, The Sheffield House SRO, the Abbott SRO, The Chateau SRO, the Lawrence House SRO, the Astor House SRO, and other area SRO's in recent years has NOT reduced crime in the area or significantly improved the area, as Ald. Cappleman had expected when he targeted certain SROs for the gut-rehab/conversions into higher rent housing, now owned by BJB Properties and FLATS Chicago. Hurting low income tenants, 2,200 evicted in the last three years alone, causes more problems for others and does not eliminate the problems some residents and alderman thought would be solved with their closing. Gentrification hurts those that remain or move into the gentrified neighborhood as well as those forced out. If bad or illegal things/ happen, take a picture with your cell phone, if you can, and go to police. Those committing crimes, such as selling drugs, harassing pedestrians. trying to extort money from motorist/parkers, need to be stopped or charged. Bad and illegal behavior that is tolerated or rewarded will get worse.

Hard Candy Source?

I've recently developed a liking for hard candy. Do you know of a store that offers a good variety? I mostly shop at Jewel and Whole Foods, and they seem to concentrate on chocolates and chewy candies, with just a sampling of hard candies. Now I'm interested in branching out a bit.

Wow! I certainly did not expect a thread as long and involved as this when I originally posted my question! Thank you all for your responses. Shortly after the initial responses came in I visited Windy City Sweets on Broadway and bought a nice selection of candies for $6.99/lb. I think that's a reasonable price. And I discovered a couple new favorites, which was my intention. And I was happy to support a local store, which I will continue to do as I try some of the other suggestions when my supply runs out.

I actually do prefer chocolates and chewies, but my new interest in hard candies is to help me practice self-discipline. They are less fattening then cookies, pastries, and chocolates, but satisfy the need for something sweet at the end of the meal, and not as conducive to binging.

Property Tax Resource

Does anyone know of a good property tax resource such as a website to walk me through it or a lawyer.

I have successfully appealed by myself in the past. But I don't know if I got back the most I could have, I don't know if I should appeal again; if I should appeal again, I don't know if a lawyer is worth it or if I should just "make stuff up" like I did last time. All I know is my mailbox gets flooded with lawyers fishing for my business and I would prefer to pay less in taxes rather than more.

Thank you!

  • All you need is a GOOD appraisal from a CERTIFIED r/e appraiser. Send in the appraisal with the appeal to C/County. Call Illinois Appraisal. 773 528 4265. 25 yrs experience.

As a lawyer, now retired (I didn't handle this sort of work for paying clients), I'm somewhat agnostic as to whether having a lawyer prosecute your challenge is worthwhile: I've gone to these politician-sponsored seminars and filed my own there with some favorable results. I think at the assessor's office it makes sense to have a lawyer (who gets paid only if the challenge is successful). After that, at various boards of review, I'm not so certain. The problem is that the tax-assessment system is a big lottery and I believe that the assessors behind the counter throw little bones to the plebs while they give large cuts to the major campaign contributors.

water heater recommendations

The water heater in our 8 unit condo building needs to be replaced. Any recommendations on installers? Tankless?

Thank you in advance!

  • The best improvement I have ever made is getting a tankless hot water heater. I love it and had no problems. Endless hot water on demand, no running out of hot water if you take a bath then shower or have company. Saves on utilities because only heats water on demand.

  • Gas h/w heater from a Wheeling distributor was $400. My handyman was $100. $25 in copper parts. Dont get ripped off.

The offer was out of line for the area, I realize that. What I didn't like was the bait and switch tactics. Before I get upbraided for not taking public transportation, my other family members came in from Milwaukee and had to return home last night. Typically I will take public transportation to concerts at Wrigley.
