THANKS for taking away these wood chips that were unauthorized and from an unknown source meaning they also could have been diseased or have pests. The last thing we need is a tree removal service dumping trees they cut down that had ash borer or asian long horn beetle, birch, maple disease!

The only wood chips that should be used are FORRESTRY wood chips. The city has wood chips they need to dispose of. Those are the chips that should be used.

THANKS to S&S for removing this blight from the neigborhood. Thanks for removing the harbingers of RATS. Thanks for removing the TEMPTATION for other fly dumpers to just come and dump a load. (which also makes us vulerable to infestations of pests and disease because the source is unknown). We don't want/need any asian long horn beetles, birch, elm disease or other problems like that.

This problem was part of approx 150 truckloads of wood chips illegally dumped all because 1 garden group gave permission for a truckload. The locations of the FLY DUMPING were mostly 40 city owned vacant lots.

THANKS to the Dept of Public health who is starting to issue tickets to offenders who FLY DUMP.

If you see someone FLY DUMPING call 911 and get CPD to come and issue a ticket. If caught in the act the FLY DUMPER can have his vehicle impounded IMMEDIATELY. Call The Department of Public health and they have inspectors that come more or less after the fact. If you take photographs depicting the illegal dump including license plates go for getting someone CONVICTED.

If there is a conviction the city will pay a $100 reward for your time. Fines can be $2500 so it is worthwhile. A ding like that and ILLEGAL FLY DUMPERS will move on to a different area where residents are not as astute as us!

We need to chase those bad guys who add to blight in EGP out of the HOOD and let them know...BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN TO YOU...if you BREAK THE LAW and leave us stuck with the mess.

Perhaps there also needs to be an ordinance that the "garden group" needs to get permission from the city department that controls the inventory of city owned vacant lots to have truckloads of wood chips dumped. Perhaps there also needs to be an ordinance that approved wood chips would come from FORESTRY...a city department that also needs to dispose of WOOD CHIPS. Why should the taxpayer pay to dump loads of wood chips at waste sites when gardeners using city city owned land could use them? Should there be an ordinance saying that wood chips need to be used within XX days of delivery?

There doesn''t seem to be any monitoring at all going on in some areas of what NFPs and Delegate agencies are doing. Maybe that also needs to be tidied up.

MOUNTAINS of wood chips sitting around on vacant lands are a tempting invitation for the ILLEGAL FLY DUMPERS.....we don't need that signal to go out. Seems these tree removal people SPREAD THE WORD...between themselves and we then become VICTIMIZED by random dumping!

This of course is done at TAXPAYER EXPENSE....our only recourse is to try and recoup by getting tickets issued and vehicles impounded.

Playground at N St. Louis & W Carroll

I've put in a call to the Alderman and talked to city workers about the state of the playground at St. Louis and Carroll, which currently has two functioning swings, a missing slide, and several burned areas. Kids (3 &4 years old) are hanging from the swings and someone is going to get hurt. If anyone else feels like throwing their two cents in to Alderman Ervin's office, the help is mmuch appreciated. Phone number: 773-533-0900. Thanks!

Cat...send photos and your story to letterforthemayor@cityofchicago.org.
Also am not sure who is in charge of that playlot. If it is Chicago Park District, they should be notified. If it is a community group like a nfp then they should be notified.

  • Cat

Thanks for the resources. I believe it is a city parks issue, and the woman at Ervin's office said she contacted them on my behalf. I also talked to some City maintenance guys who said they'd report the broken equipment. I usually wouldn't put much stock in their follow through, but the guy seemed genuinely concerned when I pointed out all the other issues. I'll follow up with the Alderman and see who else needs to be notified. Thanks again.

If aldermen did such a good job; the 28th ward would not be 65% empty and so dangerous. This would not be a food desert and have no businesses. Hope you have success. Let us know how fast this gets done.

Saw a truck driving by and stopped it. The District Manager was here surveying what work needed to be done.

There are also alleys that FLY DUMPERS drive through and dump. It is astounding that with all the Police around...they don't arrest these dumpers. maybe we have 100 dumps a day!

Help convict a fly dumper....this is GOOD. Take pics that will convict...get some chump change :-) It will at least pay for your plastic bags.

There seems to be a difference of opinion who is responsible to sweep the streets and alleys.

Some S&S workers think it is the residents' job. As alleys and streets are paid for by taxpayer $$ and workers are paid by taxpayer $$...my call says that THE CITY OF CHICAGO is responsible to keep streets and alleys clean. They spend millions to install these streets. They are also paid for the upkeep. Sometimes they can use FREE prison labor (which is also managed poorly SWAP) In some neighborhoods contractors are paid and they don't clean. More outrageously...Offenders go scott free.

Tickets will help STOP littering, fly dumping, throwing booze bottles, drug needles, poop and pee. If they issued 100 a day in EGP...it would get alot cleaner over here. For those who can't pay their ticket fine; let THEM get the broom, rake, and sweeep sweeeep sweeep...ALL SPRING, SUMMER, FALL, WINTER!!!

The jerk who made the mess should clean it up or pay to clean it up. It is NOT the job of neighbors. Many do not agree with this position. They want to volunteer and do the job for free that city workers and nfps are already paid to do.

Things won't get better unless those who are paid WORK.

Request that the responder who marked COMPLETE be punished in some way. Ask that your complaint be put in the employment file of the worker who did not do the work. The primary civic duty of slumdwellers is to make a paper trail so that those who are slacking get removed. There is no reason to pay for a lifetime of not working and then a pension till they die. Loyalties that keep politicians in power who dole out jobs to those who don't work has been going on for maybe 5 decades. That is a long long time and it is time to kill their golden goose.

Do a foia from 311 and ask for their records on your service calls when they in fact are not done. Keep a folder of all service calls you don't get. It will come in handy.

REMEMBER WHEN YOU GO TO VOTE....red, blue, red, blue, red, blue. Forget everything else...The only exemptions are politicians who have been fair and served you well.

    Again...please post your results!

Not sure what else was on his plate. I think there was more.

He is an energetic guy who doesn't want to see the kind of mess that he saw when he drove around.

Remember...our civic duty is to report when work is not done in the neighborhood. We need to tell supervisors when people are paid to do a job and don't do the job. People have not been doing this in the past and that is why things are out of countrol in the ghettos.

It is not our job to do the job that a civil servant or nfp were paid to do. That is what we are asked to do...volunteer for green days.

The Maypole/Kedzie city owned vacant lot is disgusting and if you get out of the car and walk you will want to throw up. Now someone is fly dumping grass clippings. They need to get a ticket too.

DavidB and NoahI have been writing about "The Chicago Way" for many years in the Chicago Magazine. THANK YOU GUYS! Chicagoans need to read these articles and take action to make the city a better place to live.

A comparison of CPD murder counts and Cook County Morgue should reveal some HUGE disparity. I hope that some day someone, some institution, some governmental agency has the hutzpa...to dig and shine the light of day on this.

How empty does the city have to be before someone smart catches on????
Where are the young, ambitious political wanabees? Where are the smart techies who could gather up these data and re evaluate?

Again THANKS to Chicago Magazine. Thanks to DavidB and NoahI.

Apparently that University of Chicago Social Research people in the 77 Communities map...had a finger in choosing East Garfield Park and Englewood because the community was not prepared and did not have the social services set up for this kind of massive re-entry of prisoners.

So, EGP and Englewood are official dumping grounds for prisoners release????

Read the study. What do you think?

Sometimes well intended programs are NOT good for we who live in EGP.

Going back to a ghetto may be a homecoming but it doesn't make things better.

Chicagos' map is large enough that all 50 wards could take a few. If all 50 wards contributed to re-entry and provided the jobs, education, distance from friends who are a bad influence...maybe the recidivism rate would be better. If the institutions in my ward are not able to provide the highway to getting straight and staying straight maybe some ward in a different part of the city could do a better job. I think the failure rate is 85%. Laws are now in place to lock criminals into their respective hoods.

There are a plithora of programs, institutions, organiztions, nfps who have failed at t his task for say 30 years and things are not getting better; although boatloads of $$ is spent

Opportunity is what these men need. They need to separate from the environment and people who foster their bad behavior.

Many wards could take in a few and really give a full effort to changing our prison turnstyle where most just revolve and go back. With house arrest being a plan of choice these days; neighborhoods will become more violent and crime impossible to remove. It is the kiss of death to dump all poor people, all criminals in zones out of sight.

We take abused people out of their environments and help them to learn new behavior. If that is successful it is a really positive step. We don't have much of that in some of the hoods.
