The City of Chicago owns about 400 vacant lots in East Garfield Park - and they're selling them all for $1 each until Aug 4th.

If you own land on the same block as one or more of these lots, you can apply to buy up two of them.

Why Census Figures Favor Rham
by Edward McClelland
“The trend is a result for the plan for transformation of the Chicago Housing Authority, and the displacement of 110,000 people,” mayoral candidate William “Dock” Walls told Ward Room. “Some of ’em have left Chicago. They’ve gone to the suburbs, or Indiana.”

Several years ago, I talked to a lakefront alderman who predicted Chicago would become a Midwestern Manhattan, with the wealthy inside the city limits, and the poor banished to suburbia.

“In 25 years, it’ll all be like this,” he said, referring to his ward. “There’s too much demand for land in the city.”

Razing Cabrini Green to make way for the expansion of the Near North Side is part of that process. Expect it to intensify if Emanuel becomes mayor. It’ll be to his political advantage, and the city’s financial advantage. In the future, you won’t have to go down to Oak Street to see aspiring Eurotrash. They’ll be all over the city. It’s only a matter of time before Barneys New York opens a discount outlet in East Garfield Park.

Came across this about Rahm, the Census, gentrification & redevelopment of Cabrini. That last comment made me laugh (Barney's). It's coming.....

Pete's Fresh Market* Madison & Western*

I just went to the new Pete's Fresh market..and can say-the lay-out is nice, the managers look exhausted, the workers are disconnected and have a bored to death teenagers attitude, the parking lot is filled with carts, yet many workers taking 'breaks' at the outdoor dining area...Pete's needs to get a few Marine/Army/Navy veterans in there to instill some work ethic, and attitude adjusting* From my perspective opening a business in the 'hood' looks pretty daunting.I wish them luck, they'll need it.

Given the lack of options/competition in the area, I'm certain they will do well. Hopefully their presence will drive some of the food purchases away from the glut of liquor/food marts in the area as well. The density of those types of store is much too high given the population.

  • we need change CLEAN-UP THE CORNERS

I finally visited the store late at night last week. I thought it was pretty decent but i need to return during the day.The deli foods and prepared foods looked very dried out but it was very late so that probably explains why.

On another note, the Chinese restaurant in the plaza HAS HORRIBLE customer service. I've tried it twice and finally had enough. We STILL need a decent Chinese restaurant in the area.

No street lights 2700-2800 W Warren Blocks

I submitted a 311 request for the lights on these blocks. The requested was closed less than 24 hours saying the lights work fine. Has anyone else submitted these street lights to 311?

I tried calling 311 tonight and 2 times no answer. So I submitted again online with pictures.
